SOD CUTTING REST BAY

COINS AND CHRISTIANITY

Dear Editor,

The article Through Christian Eyes (August issue) gives us information about our coinage.

It is interesting that in 1521, Pope Leo X of Rome gave King Henry VIII the title Defender of the Faith, but King Henry later on set up his own Church of England.

The Apostle Matthew writes about a Roman coin. The Pharisees conspired together to trap Jesus in his speech.

Matthew 22:17 to 22: “Tell us then, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay head tax to Caesar or not? But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: why do you put me to the test, hypocrites?  Show me the tax coin.

They brought him a denarius. He said to them: Whose image and inscription is this? They said: Caesar’s.  Then he said to them: Pay back, therefore, Caesar’s things to Caesar, but God’s things to God.

When they heard that, they were amazed, and they left him and went away.”

So Christ said every Christian should pay their taxes, and give their life in God’s service.

Dear Editor,

The picture shows Gary Victor, president of Porthcawl Shout Forum, and members, cutting the first sod for the Samtampa and Edward Prince of Wales Lifeboat Memorial at Rest Bay. Gary Victor, Porthcawl

GIANT SUNFLOWER

Dear Editor,

Just wondered if anyone has grown a sunflower taller than this - 3 metres 20 cms. The variety is called ‘Titan’ and wow, are they huge! Must be the Bridgend weather!

THANK YOU FROM NEWTON CHURCH

Dear Editor,

Once again our thanks go out to all our helpers, sponsors, entertainers and most of all you wonderful people that turned up and supported us in great numbers. The rain stayed away, the raffle sold out and a figure in excess of £8000 has been raised to help maintain the town’s oldest and most iconic building. Our very special thanks go to Hats the one for a most generous donation, which added an extra touch of glamour to the day courtesy of the ones purchased and worn. To see the community come together and enjoy the afternoon made the efforts of all concerned very worthwhile indeed. Our lovely church has services on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday‘s service has a coffee and chat afterwards, we’d love to see you anytime!

BOOK OF THE MONTH: THE GIRL WITH THE LOUDING VOICE –ABI DARE

Adunni is a 14-year-old Nigerian girl who knows what she wants: an education. As the only daughter of a broke father, she is a valuable commodity. Removed from school and sold as a 3rd wife to an old man, Adunni’s life amounts to this: 4 goats, 2 bags of rice, some chickens and a new TV. When unspeakable tragedy swiftly strikes in her new home, she is secretly sold as a domestic servant to a household in the wealthy enclaves of Lagos, where no one will talk about the strange disappearance of her predecessor, Rebecca. No one but Adunni. As a yielding daughter, a subservient wife, and a powerless servant, 14-yearold Adunni is repeatedly told that she is nothing. But Adunni won’t be silenced. She is determined to find her voice - in a whisper, in song, in broken English - until she can speak for herself, for the girls like Rebecca who came before, and for all the girls who will follow.

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

We’re a friendly camera club with a mix of male and female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels.

With the fast-approaching annual concert the choir is extremely busy rehearsing. We a have number of new and unusual pieces this year, which will hopefully be well received. With our special guest artist, Mike Doyle it will be a great evening. Tickets are already flying out of the door, and it promises to be a sellout. So, if you haven’t already got you ticket don’t wait.

As usual at this time of the year, we have updated our choir photograph. The brilliant photographer, Richard White, decided to do it in front of the iconic Coastal Watch tower. Despite battling with the summer weather, the result was fantastic. We are now also able to show off our newly purchased gold ties. They were funded by our hardworking ladies section and a grant from Broadband supplier OGI. You can see these if you visit the News page of our website www.porthcawlmalechoir.co.uk.

Don’t forget to come and see us at the High Tide during the Elvis Festival on the 24th of September. Watch out for timings. Now is a great time for you men out there to join us. We have a one-week break after our annual concert and then will start rehearing for our exciting Christmas program. We guarantee you a great time.

We recently had another demonstration evening at one of our weekly member workshops. Tricia Simon painted a mountain scene inspired by a recent holiday in the French Alps. She demonstrated a loose watercolour approach and members will then have a go at this technique at a future workshop. Nonmembers are welcome to attend our workshops for a small charge and it’s an excellent place to share tips and inspiration. We aim to be open 11-3pm Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and other days when volunteers are available, so

outstanding performance. We also held a concert in St James Church, Thornton in June. A donation was awarded to the church from the tickets sales of the concert.

Finally, our annual concert was held at Pisgah Chapel. Although this was our 53rd year performing as a choir this was a delayed 50th anniversary concert that had been held back by the pandemic. Our event was supported by the wonderful Maternal Harmony Ladies Choir, Violinist Sage Taylor and soloist Stephan Ulberini. A donation of £200 was awarded to Maternal Harmony who then forwarded this to their chosen charity. For further information, please contact:

I hope by the time you read this that the weather was fine and the Newton Music Festival went off great. Due to the magazine’s printing schedule, the column is written a month behind its publication. Nice to see Porthcawl man Andy Edwards new music project, The Mighty RA, slotting a local gig in at the General Picton on Friday 13th October with tickets on sale now. Andy was a member of 90s band Ezra, which I featured on my then radio show many times, so check them out.

It was fab to see my long-suffering song-writing partner, Daley B Williams, over from the Czech Republic. We managed to work on some new material I’ve been writing – so watch this space. After a long hiatus from the rock scene, I’m starting to work on new ideas.

Finally, last month I lost a dear friend and gentleman, Norman Miles, who lived in Severn Road and was 101 years young. He was a huge fan of this magazine, and a wonderfully accomplished pianist, and myself and fellow columnist Anthony Hontoir spent many hours listening to Norman’s lovely playing. RIP Norman, never forgotten.

LET THERE BE LIGHT!

Our first concert, the St. David’s Concert at Cornelly Community Centre supported by Port Talbot based Cor Serenata and the magnificent soloist soprano Anwen-Angharad Dixon who wowed the audience on her debut performance. The choir performed a medley of Welsh songs associated with our culture and heritage and was a complete success. We also held a Ugandan Charity Concert at the Bethlehem Life Centre. Young violinist Sage Taylor accompanied the choir and Rhian Hughes was our solo soprano for the evening. Once again, another

Côr Bro Ogwr performed Joseph Haydn’s great oratorio ‘The Creation’ on Saturday, 22nd July at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. In an evening noticeably short on light and deluged with rain, the power of this great work and the energy and skills of all involved brought drama and light to an appreciative audience. Full of musical word-paintings depicting storms, sunrises, colourful animals and birds, the work describes the seven days of the creation of the world. Such a dramatic choral work was a fitting way to celebrate the choir’s 25th anniversary. The excellent soloists were Victoria Illsley (soprano), William Collins (Tenor) and Simon Pratt (Baritone), and soloists and choir were accompanied by The Cardiff Concert Orchestra. Côr Bro Ogwr’s ever-energetic Musical Director, Ben Pinnow, skillfully brought together the whole performance.

POEMS

DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS?

I’d like to write a poem To send to Seaside News. Shall I make it jolly? Or fill it with the blues?

I need to get a move on Or I’ll run out of time. Now, shall I make it prose? Or shall I make it Rhyme?

I could write a sonnet

A William Shakespeare touch. That might be too boring, Folk might not like it much. A haiku or a limerick?

Keep it short and sweet. Or maybe I’ll send this one. After all it is complete!

Judy Dee, Porthcawl

SAD MANAGER

So 20 months I did survive

And tried to improve So many lives

The building was

So very sad, But came alive And I was glad

The residents were

So very kind They are in our thoughts And in our minds

They soon became A part of us

With smiles around Without a fuss

The job was tough

So much to do

But I tried my best

For my resident “crew”

We became your friends

And you became ours

We will miss you always, Years, weeks and hours.

So thank you all

At pavilion court

And thank you all

For what I was taught,

Be kind each day

And raise a smile, And think of Susan And rob once in a while.

From Susan Burns Manager at Pavilion Court until 26/8/23

DEAR READER

There’s a leak in my system Dear Reader, Dear Reader, I’ve called out the plumbers but nothing has changed. Inspectors have inspected but never corrected And after a year I’ve gone quietly deranged.

There’s a leak in my system and no one can find it, ‘It’s under the drive’, at least that’s what they say. For inspectors I’ve waited, understandably frustrated, The cost of the leak is not going away.

There’s a leak in my system with no sign of leakage, I’m paying for something that I’ve never seen. So I’m rationing water! Not flushing the toilet!

And washing with wet wipes to keep myself clean!

There’s a leak in my system in much need of fixing, The powers that be. seem to be in no rush.

It can’t be surprising, my water bill’s rising, While the meter keeps spinning I’m haemorrhaging cash.

There’s a leak in my system, Dear Reader, Dear Reader.

While it trickles away there’s not much I can save.

My patience is wearing. I can’t wait much longer, Or they’ll be carting me off to a watery grave.

A PRESENT FROM MY CAT

No I’m not getting up so early, I’m still dreaming in my bed, So stop that purring in my ear, And stop messing with my head, Your milk is in the kitchen, Your food is in your dish, What is it that you’re after, I bought your favourite fish, So stop that meowing this instant, Oh my goodness what is that?

I slowly open up one eye, A paw holding one dead rat!

MIRROR

All the secrets  and tales untold, In front of a mirror  only truths unfold  Eyes when engage in intimate embrace. No reluctance finds its space

The cloak of  lonely souls is swiftly torn In front of you your clone is born

Yet mirrors hold reflections, unafraid

You hear those words dare never Said

Images bear witness to anguish and despair,

They reach out to the heart seldom wounds repair.

One only can see , never can touch

It’s so beautiful yet beautiful as such  Mirror so deep as deep as heart  But keeps unseen wall to keep you apart  Dr Nadeem Iqbal, Bridgend

AI GENERATED POEM ON KENFIG

In the land of Wales, there’s a tale to be told

Of a village whose story is age-old Kenfig, once a thriving town

Now lost, never to be found

Amidst the hills and the sea so blue Lies the remains of a village so true

A tale of love and betrayal to tell

Of a place that once held a magic spell

The sands that once glistened in the sun Are now barren, the village is done The ghosts of the past still roam In memories, they call Kenfig their home

A castle stood tall, built by the Normans Now lost in time, like a song that isn’t sung

The village was once a thriving place

Now a memory, a ghostly trace

But tales of Kenfig still survive in the hearts of those who were once alive

The lost village, a story so old

A tale that will never grow old Nic Humphries, Cardiff

PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL MAYORAL MESSAGE

I am delighted and honoured to have been elected as Town Mayor for Porthcawl for 2023/24, and whilst carrying out this role would like to assure you that I am committed to do the very best I can for the community as a whole. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Cllr Jeff Perren on being elected as Deputy Mayor and look forward to working with him, alongside all Porthcawl’s elected Councillors, for the betterment of the Town. We are already well into the Council year which has been a busy and challenging one. I have attended a number of community events and have been delighted, amazed and humbled by the hard work that many local groups, organisations and indeed individuals put in to making Porthcawl a better place to live. The Town Council is pleased to see that the new play equipment has now been installed at Griffin Park and is being enjoyed by the community and visitors alike. There is also a lot of work going on to ensure continued improvement in the Park, alongside other areas within the Town that the Town Council are responsible for. Something new this year is the decision of the Council to include “The People’s Budget” in its 2023/24 precept. The concept behind the Peoples Budget is to give residents direct, meaningful choices about how a proportion of the Town Council’s budget is to be spent. It also inspires a positive effect by encouraging well engaged community supported events and projects. All the details in relation to the People’s Budget are on the Town Council’s website https://www. porthcawltowncouncil.gov.uk/the-peoples-budget-2023-2024/ however feel free to call into the Town Council Offices (16-18 Mary Street) if you would like further information and the staff will be happy to help. To date, in this financial year the Town Council has obtained £37,000 grant funding which has assisted with local events and on-going community projects. Council will continue to look at ways in which it can help to ensure that Porthcawl continues to be an attractive, prosperous and welcoming Town in which to live and to visit.

TELL ME ABOUT DELAYS IN NHS TREATMENT

I am asking constituents to tell me their experiences with delays in getting the knee and hip replacement surgery they need.

Despite the elimination of two year waiting periods in England, in Wales we have 30,000 people languishing on waiting lists for two years or more.

How have England done this? By establishing surgical hubs. But in Wales, the Labour government has been slow to adopt this idea despite being urged to do so by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The deadline for eliminating these waits has been extended to next April but the number of people waiting has only dropped by 478 over the past couple of months.  At that rate, it will take another five years to completely eliminate the two-year backlog.

After 24 years of Labour running the NHS in Wales, the system

is in complete disarray. And the price will be paid by thousands of people living in pain with their lives on hold or even facing dire consequences if they are cancer sufferers.

There are now 748,000 people in Wales waiting for treatment –one in four of the population and twice the rate of England. It is an absolute disgrace.

FIRST MINISTER COMES TO PORTHCAWL TO VIEW COSY CORNER

It was great to see First Minister Mark Drakeford dropping in recently to visit the first phase of the all-new Cosy Corner development. The First Minister was shown around the £2.8m project, which has been made possible thanks to funding from Welsh Government, Bridgend County Borough Council and Visit Wales.

Incorporating an attractive stone and glass-clad building with space for five new businesses, community meeting rooms, harbour offices, public toilets, changing facilities and more, the newly revamped Cosy Corner also offers external seating and tables, an all-weather canopy, and an extensive grassed area with plenty of open space.

The main building is fitted with solar panels and uses a heat source pump, making it one of the first in the county borough to direct unused energy back to the grid.

The First Minister also met with some of the tenants who are moving in, including luxury doughnut and coffee specialists WhoCult, delicatessen the Green Olive, and a restaurant called Salt Lake Seafood.

He also learned more about the second phase of Cosy Corner’s ongoing development, which is due to start later in the year when a high-quality, large-scale children’s play area will be introduced – look out for more details on this very soon

NEW 20MPH SPEED LIMIT SET TO BOOST ROAD SAFETY

This month sees the introduction of a new 20mph speed limit across Wales as part of a Welsh Government initiative to improve road safety.

Starting on 17 September, the new limit is designed to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities on roads or portions of routes which currently carry a 30mph limit and are largely located within residential and built-up areas.

In Bridgend County Borough, just under 100 of these will remain exempt from the change, and will retain their 30mph limit. The exemptions were compiled by the council’s Traffic Management team using Welsh Government criteria and feedback from local residents.

Welsh Government has also stated that a 20mph limit could result in 40 per cent fewer collisions, save between six and 10 lives a year, and avoid between 1,200 to 2,000 injuries. Slower traffic makes people feel more comfortable when walking and cycling, and it is safer for children to play outdoors or to walk to and from school. Those who are older, disabled or who have additional needs may also find it easier to travel independently. Full details of the exemptions are available to view at the Datamap Wales website, and the Welsh Government site features a full set of FAQs on the scheme.

miss out.

If approved, the current split-site arrangement would end, and the infant and junior sites would merge and relocate to a newbuild primary school on the existing Mynydd Cynffig Primary School junior site in Kenfig Hill.

Ready from September 2025, the new school will be able to accommodate 420 pupils as well as offering 75 nursery places –make sure you have your say on the plans today.

PLANNING BLUEPRINT FOR PORTHCAWL

Tel: 01656 643643

HAVE YOUR SAY ON NEW SCHOOL PLANS

THE revised Local Development Plan for BCBC has been approved by Welsh Government with no significant changes. The Plan probably has the most impact on Porthcawl where 1100 new homes are planned. The vast majority will be built on Sandy Bay, Salt Lake and the fairground site. Civic Trust and many other local groups objected on the grounds that an influx of an extra 3,000 to 4000 people would put an impossible strain on local services. Many people already complain about difficulties in getting GP appointments and fear what will happen when thousands of new residents move in. Porthcawl already sees its population double during the summer when all the caravans at Trecco are occupied, putting extra strain on already overstretched health services.

The danger is that Porthcawl, which already has one of the oldest populations in Wales with an average age of 54, will become even more of a coastal retirement town as it is unlikely that first time buyers and young couples will be able to afford to buy these new houses – further skewing the imbalance in the age of the population and increasing demand for healthcare and social services support.

I hope that as many people as possible will take part in the preplanning consultation over our plans for the £12.8m expansion and modernisation of Mynydd Cynffig Primary School. This is currently ongoing and you can find out more by visiting the council’s website, www.bridgend.gov.uk

Just before the summer break, we held an engagement session at the school and showed pupils a ‘fly-through’ animated video for the proposed site. This was created using three-dimensional computer generated imagery and enabled the children to visualise how their new school could look, which resulted in lots of great questions.

Both the staff and pupils have had an input on the plans, and we are keen to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas, so please make sure you do not

SCHOOLS THE BURROWS

A-Level schools in the UK for ALPS since 2018.

A-Level and GCSE results are consistently well above the national average. Last year, students celebrated our track record for outstanding A-Level results with 45% A* grades, 75% A*/A and 90% A*/B, with a 100% pass rate across all subjects, highlighting our strength in both academic and creative fields. St Clare’s Sixth Form is the perfect stepping-stone between school, university, and an inspiring future. Sixth Formers uniquely benefit from six lessons of tuition per subject per week. They are also allocated a HP ProBook X360 solely for their use.

Our next ‘school in action’ Open Week is 25th – 29th September. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see our pupils happy and engaged in their lessons, meet our teachers and see how your child would be given the opportunity to flourish at St Clare’s. www.stclares-school.co.uk

Or call (01656) 789966 for a last-minute place for September

We had fun filled graduation party in the High Tide, for the 40 children leaving us for big school. The children enjoyed a fabulous entertainer, with games, music and a graduation cake. From September, we are in a position to offer spaces at our nursery. We offer several different packages, to suit all working parents, including term time. We welcome visitors by appointment only and provide an information booklet on an email application.

We offer breakfast club and after school club from West Park Primary and after school only from Newton and Porthcawl Primary schools.

We have several outside areas at nursery but new to us this year is our very own field. Its located 5 mins from the setting and here we can provide our own forest school experiences. In this safe, private location we can provide a meaningful and enriching outdoor experience. Using natural materials, we can build on their development as we know children thrive outdoors.

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL - A LEVEL RESULTS

We are delighted with this summer’s A Level examination results at Porthcawl Comprehensive School.  I would like to congratulate all Year 12 and Year 13 students on their achievements.  Students at AS and A2 have had their endeavors rewarded with excellent results.  There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for families who have supported their sons and daughters.  Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home –well done all!

It gives me a real sense of pride seeing the young people in our community rewarded for their hard work.  We are pleased that our students have received an outstanding set of results which will ensure they can move on to the next phase of their education and lives.  Throughout their time in the Sixth Form at PCS they have all shown such resilience and determination.

Free eye test voucher

Our Year 12 students have performed well at AS Level.  The results achieved provide a very strong foundation for moving into Year 13 and onto A Level from September 2023 –congratulations!

At A Level, our Year 13 students sat an incredible 1417 papers over the examination period.  Our provisional results show that near 70% of all grades awarded were A*- B, 41% of all grades awarded were A*- A and 86% of all grades awarded were A*- C.  Over 95% of our students have moved onto a place at a university this year with approximately 40% of these students securing a place at a Russell Group University.  Our students will be studying a range of degrees including Law, Architecture, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, Design, Physics and Sport – to name a few!  Other students have secured or are looking for employment, some have gained places on highlevel apprenticeships, and some have chosen to take time out before continuing their studies or embarking on a career.  I wish all of them every success in the future and look forward to welcoming them back to school whenever they are in Porthcawl.

At A Level, over 80% of students achieved at least 3 or more A Levels graded at A*- C and just over 27% of students achieved 3 or more A Levels graded at A*- A grades.  In addition, 100% of students achieved the Level 3 Threshold. These excellent results have ensured that Porthcawl students continue to secure places at some of the best universities in the country, move onto high-level apprenticeships, secure employment or embark on traineeships – I am one very proud Head Teacher!

To end, I would like to congratulate all staff and students for their hard work and steadfast dedication.

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

A warm welcome back to the start of the new academic year. It has been lovely to meet our new Year 7 cohort; all have settled in quickly and have started to enjoy the wonderful experience that is Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Our first few weeks have started with lots of ‘success’ and ‘congratulations’ as we once again celebrate the remarkable examination performance from our Year 11 and Year 13 students. I would like to personally congratulate all students on their achievements - outstanding and very much deserved! These results have provided a valuable platform for the future! On Results Days in August I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to Year 13 and Year 11 students and families about the next steps - University, Employment, Porthcawl Sixth Form, College Courses and Employment. Good luck! Our Year 7 and Year 8 pupils have started the new Curriculum for Wales which we have renamed ‘The Curriculum

for Porthcawl’. A bespoke curriculum that we have designed for ‘The Porthcawl Pupil’ – we are really looking forward to delivering our new curriculum. We have also welcomed back a large number of students into the Sixth Form and we look forward to working with all students during the academic year ahead. Welcome back everyone!

KENFIG NATURE RESERVE

There has been plenty going on at Kenfig Nature Reserve in the last few months. The reserve as usual is buzzing with wildlife, and autumn is a great time to see butterflies and dragonflies, migrant birds and late summer flowers.

The Reserve, and our warden Chris, were featured on a recent edition of the BBC’s Countryfile programme, where he explained the work needed to maintain the Reserve and its special wildlife.

A new line of fencing is to be erected across the reserve, to allow light grazing by cattle and sheep, which is necessary to control the growth of grasses and scrub, which, if not kept under control, will result in the loss of many species of plants and animals. There will be pedestrian gates on all major footpath routes.

Many footpaths around the reserve have recently been cleared and widened, and, while the water table is still low, it is possible to walk right around the pool without getting your feet wet!

Kenfig Volunteers meet every Wednesday and Thursday, when they carry out moth and butterfly surveys, as well as carrying out practical work on the Reserve.

The Reserve Centre is now being used for a variety of activities, from wildlife classes, to yoga, pilates, quilt making and children’s ballet. Centre staff and volunteers have also been running a series of wildlife-themed craft children’s activities during the summer.

An Artisan Market is held on the first Sunday of each month, and the Farmer’s Market on the third Sunday. Weddings can also be hosted in the Centre.

While visiting the reserve, you can enjoy a coffee and cake, a smoothie, or a panini, at the Hyde Out, located in the Car Park, open Wednesday through to Sunday during September. After some initial issues with the car parking system, caused by vandalism to the charging booths, problems have now largely been resolved. 80% of the money taken for parking goes directly to fund the reserve, and If you take out an annual pass at a cost of £45, 100% of that money goes to the reserve. If you wish to get an annual pass, or have any queries about the Centre or the Reserve, please ring the Centre on 07483 392077 or the Warden on 07483 393944, or email clerk@ kenfignaturecorporation.com. Or visit us on Facebook, Kenfig Nature Reserve, or Twitter @kenfigwarden

“Oh, I remember this! It’s the old ticket office/parcel office/ antique shop!” It’s a phrase often heard by Gemma and her team in the freshly painted baby blue building located in Hillsboro Car park. The historic building was, of course, all of these great things but it is now The Pantri Box; a zero waste Community Interest Company bringing fresh life to the discarded, but iconic premises.

Gemma Lewis set up The Pantri Box 4 years ago. Firstly in a converted horsebox, located by the Harbour, before moving into a small shop in Newton Village. But it is only since relocating to the old ticket office, just off the high street, that the eco-loving zero-waste treasure trove has really been discovered.

“Since moving into town we’ve been seeing at least 5 times the custom, and luckily all the customers are absolutely amazing. We’ve had so many positive reviews it’s been incredible and people are always surprised at how competitive the prices are for quality organic products,” says Gemma.

The Pantri Box stocks over 300 items from organic rice to recycled jewelry. As well as stocking an array of ethically sourced dried food and plastic free lifestyle essentials, they do incredible locally roasted coffee, teas, homemade healthy cakes, smoothies and delicious fresh vegetarian and vegan lunches. However, it is The School Pantri in which Gemma is really invested. All profits go into this arm of the business; the aim of which is to help schools set up their own in-house zero waste shop and help children feel empowered to make climate positive decisions.

Gemma sais “The project is still in its infancy, but we have been trialing it in West Park for the last 3 years - and the results have been really heart warming.”

So next time you decide to have a cheeky slice of cake, you can do it in the knowledge the money is going into the future generations and their climate education. Eating cake to save the planet - sounds like a winner to me!

Follow them on @the_pantri_box to see the daily menu, product list and updates.

2117 (PORTHCAWL & KENFIG HILL) RAF AIR CADETS

FRIENDS OF MONZE ZAMBIA

Bridgend charity Friends of Monze and Zambia based charity Zambian Women and Girls Foundation ( ZWAGF) have so far built 15 schools in the rural area of Monze. Each school has 3 classrooms, a storeroom and an office and most importantly a locked store where exam papers can be kept safe. This allows children to take exams in their own school rather than walking up to 6 miles to another unfamiliar school

In the summer, cadets and staff attended the Annual Summer Camp at RAF Wittering. The week included visits to the Red Arrows, an air traffic control tower, a state-of-the-art fire station, RAF Cranwell (RAF Headquarters) where the cadets had a tour and a history lesson of the RAF and the people who have made it great along the way, and DATR (Defence Animal Training Regiment) where the Royal Horses and Police dogs are trained. There were also activities such as sailing at Rutland Water Centre, laser tagging, and 10-pin bowling. Cadets also had the chance to see how a squadron operates in the desert, jungle, and other hostile environment.

At 2117 we were visited by Cllrs Louise Barham and Rhys Watkins from Pyle Community Council. The squadron received a generous grant from the council, which was spent on adventure training equipment. This has already been used by our cadets during their Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions. If you are interested in joining as a cadet (age 12+) or as an adult volunteer (age 20+) please contact us on the e-mail below or visit the RAFAC website.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

Hi folks, as I mentioned last time, a lot memories are coming back to me, of when God helped me in the past. Here’s another one: When I was about 10 years old, I was in my kitchen making toast. Then I was trying to open a jar (I think jam, probably not marmite!) to spread some jam on my toast, but for some reason I couldn’t open it. I tried with all my might to open that jar but couldn’t. In frustration, I cried out, oh God, would you help me open this jar! And then suddenly, as I tried to turn the lid, it just popped open easily. It was like God put his hands on mine and opened that jar. Life can be like that. We try but life’s circumstances get the better of us. But like with the jam jar, God can help us in life. The bible says, it’s not by our own power but by his Spirit that we get breakthroughs in life (Zechariah 4 v 6). God is probably already helping you, in a right way, to a certain extent, because of his love and care. But being in personal relationship with God and asking him for his help changes everything!

Many rural ‘schools’ in Monze are classes under a tree or in a derelict building with lessons taught by unpaid and often unqualified teachers. But the classrooms are just a building – a school needs so much more. The children need a qualified teacher, curriculum books, desks to sit at, a blackboard and reading books. Zambia has 72 languages but English has been the National Language of Zambia since their independence in 1964. After consultation with the Zambian Ministry of Education and ZWAGF we introduced an English reading scheme, produced in Zimbabwe, to 10 of our schools. This has improved reading skills and made their transition into learning through English at age 11 seamless. Contact us: www.friendsofmonze.org.uk or Facebook.

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

Tuesday the 8th August and we were off on our trip to Abergavenny and Monmouth. The weather was a little disappointing to start with but it soon improved and we didn’t let it spoil our day. We enjoyed the indoor market and charity shops, with plenty of places to eat and enjoy a cup of coffee. We visited the priory church and looked at the new stain glass window, which had been installed several years ago and visited the priory Center, which housed a tapestry depicting the history of Abergavenny. Soon it was time to find our bus and we were off to Monmouth, when we got there we managed to find room for a coffee and a cake and a quick look at the shops then we were on our way home. Enid had arranged everything including a raffle on the bus, we all agreed the day had been a great success and a credit to Enid’s organisation skills. Well done Enid we’re all looking forward to the next one.

PORTHCAWL LIONS

In a summer of mixed weather Porthcawl Lions were very lucky in having a glorious day for their annual sandcastle competition. Choosing a winner from so many good entries was not easy but first place went to Rhys and Margo, here on holiday from Sussex. Their entry showed dolphins in a bay surrounded by cliffs. Second place was a canoe surrounded by a variety of sea life and third was a castle with a face to scare off any visitors! The club thanks Coney Beach Leisure Park and Alun Jones of Supervalue for donating the prizes and Deputy Mayor Jeff Perren for presenting them. Unfortunately the weather has not been so kind for the car boot sales at Pyle Rugby Club, which have been either rained off or poorly attended, but hopefully better luck next year. With luck, summer is not over yet but Porthcawl Lions are starting to prepare for Christmas. Members are hoping that Santa will again visit his Grotto in John Street on Saturdays in November and December. For those who want to run off those Christmas excesses there should be the Boxing Day fun run plus perhaps some other seasonal events

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS

We did not have our usual guild meeting last month but instead enjoyed an afternoon tea at the Grove Golf Club - and who doesn’t enjoy an afternoon tea! We welcomed Ceri Joseph and Rev Clive Williams as guests - being two of our most popular speakers.

Our meeting this month is on Wednesday September 13th at the Grove Golf Club 2.0 p.m. when we will have a speaker from the co-op on “Finances”. At this time that is an important topic as we all try to make our money go that bit further! So do come along and see if she will be able to help us!

We have a full programme of speakers for the next seven months - something to interest everyone so try us out, you will not be disappointed!

INNER WHEEL PORTHCAWL

In our last meeting we had a very interesting visit from Ellen Jones who came to talk to us about her involvement with Fairtrade coffee growers and her café in Newton. We plan to make a visit for coffee and cake in the holidays.

Rotarian president Rob Lee’s BBQ was a great success. The weather held for us and we all enjoyed a feast in the sunshine. Rob was quite the chef in his pinny and cooked burgers and hot dogs to perfection. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the salads and deserts.

IW President Mary celebrated the beginning of her next year of office with an afternoon tea in her garden when we had another sunny spell. We do not meet in August so if you think being in the Inner Wheel is something you would enjoy being a part of, please come and join us in September, when we have a visit from our District Chairman Brenda Scourfield.

PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

On several occasions now we have enjoyed live entertainment, vocals and guitarist by Lyn and Pete, who sing and play songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s. They are a dynamic duo who spread such joy to their audience, as they not only enjoy their ability to perform themselves; but have the rare ability to have a wonderful rapport with others.

They travel from Cinderford and love performing in Wales, we are looking forward to this energetic, enthusiast rock and roll couple again in October. When no doubt our Mary Jones cannot wait to have a dance!!

Another artist we had on several occasion is Debra John, the storyteller, who provides us with fascinating stories written by her and researched by her. Debra can transport you back in time. Debra dresses in the clothing of her characters and her mind transports her to the scene of events, very clever. Normally there is a lot of chatting going on in the stroke Club, but when Debra John is there, you cannot hear a pin drop. We have lots of things to look forward to: Breton Railway/ Swansea Canal/ Red Kites/etc. So do not feel isolated, join the Porthcawl Stroke Club.

ROTARY IN PORTHCAWL

In a recently held meeting Carol Llewelyn handed the chain of office to Robert Lee who will be President for the year 2023-24. In turn, Robert invested Alison Thomas as the President Elect and she will assume the role of President in June 2024.

The summer months tend to be quiet for Rotary in Porthcawl but we will shortly be planning our activities leading up to Christmas as we continue with our objective of raising money to support local charities.

For information, we continue to meet in the Hi-Tide Inn on Mondays – lunchtime on the first and third Mondays of each month and in the evening on the fourth Monday. One recent change is that the meeting on the second Monday is via Zoom to provide greater flexibility.

If you wish for further details about Rotary or wish to help with any of our activities please contact our Secretary, Andrew Singer andrewbsinger@icloud.com

TEA AT THE MANOR

Bridgend Soroptimists recently enjoyed afternoon tea at Gileston Manor in the Vale of Glamorgan.

In spite of damp weather they toured the magnificent grounds of the Manor and were guided by head gardener Jack Jones. He related the history of the estate and gave an up to date account of how it has recently seen a change of use by the current owners. Functions of all kinds can now be held there and it has become a most splendid wedding venue. A herd of Al Pakas can be seen wandering around together with Peacocks (even a white one), whilst on the recently completed lake some magnificent black swans glide majestically along. The afternoon marked the end of the club’s early Summer sessions. Autumn/Winter programmes start on 13th September at the Heronston Hotel Bridgend. New members welcome.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

We will be back in the workshop from Wednesday 6th September.

Due to a necessary change of direction by the charity we have been advised that fewer tools will be required for Africa. There are several reasons for this, the training that usually lasts one year has to be extended to two years to give the recipients of the tools more support to become successful in their chosen venture. This in turn reduces the number of volunteers available for the basic training. The trades in some of the countries we send tools to have become saturated with like trades resulting in too much competition, new areas are being investigated but this will take time and planning. The traditional trades for men will be augmented with trades for women such as cookery and hair dressing, the equipment for these will needs to be new so fund raising will have to be increased. Sewing machines will continue to be sent.

We appreciate the tools that you have donated to us but please do not donate tools for a couple of month we are ‘tooled out’.

OLDER PEOPLE’S COMMISSIONER VISITS PORTHCAWL SHOUT

Porthcawl Shout have hosted another successful open forum meeting with Helena Herklots CBE, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales. She explained that meeting older people and seeing first hand the issues that affect their lives was crucial to her support work. She urged anyone experiencing difficulties to contact her office for advice or assistance on 03442 640 670.

Residents said their living and social standards are diminishing and there was a discussion on our inadequate half-day bus service and our inadequate and disappearing bank service. Possibly the greatest problem addressed was the impact on older people at being digitally excluded; a January 2023 survey found 12 million people in the UK do not have the digital skills needed for everyday life.

Another area of interest was her support for BCBC to work with older people’s forums and was surprised that Porthcawl Shout has not received funding from BCBC for many years.

In September, we will be joined by a representative from LLAIS, the new voice for health and social care in Wales. Porthcawl Shout meets in Trinity Church on the first Friday of the month (except August) at 2pm and welcomes all residents.

HISTORY

HOLLYWOOD: THE HAYS CODE

The Motion Picture Production Code, commonly known as the Hays Code, was a set of guidelines designed to regulate the content of motion pictures produced in America between 1934 and 1968.

Some directors subverted the Code. In Notorious (1946) Alfred Hitchcock worked around the three-second-kissing rule by instructing Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman to break off every three seconds. The result: the kissing sequence lasted for two and a half minutes.

Although the stricter aspects of the Hays Code remained in place, by the 1940s and 1950s adherence began to wane. Duel in the Sun, aka Lust in the Dust, was released in 1946 without the approval of the Hays Office. Due to its themes, Some Like It Hot (1959) also failed to gain approval. However, the financial success of these movies further weakened the Code.

By 1968 the arrival of television, combined with the influence of European cinema, maverick directors and liberal attitudes led to the closure of the Hays Office and the implementation of the rating system that we are all familiar with today.

PORTHCAWL AND THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

The Spanish Civil War, in which 33 Welshmen were killed, broke out in July 1936, between the Nationalist right-wing Junta; and the elected Republican left wing government. People from all over Europe went to fight for the left and ‘freedom.’

In April 1937, the Nationalists pushed the Republican Basque troops back into Bilbao and took siege of the city.

British ships managed to break the blockade and get food, coal, medicines, and supplies into the city, overrun with refugees. Three of those ships were owned by Mr. Alfred J Pope, the owner of the Seabank Hotel, Porthcawl, where he lived on the top floor. Alfred established the Veronica Steamship Company (Cardiff) on 19th December 1936; named after his wife, who was the daughter of Sir T. G. Jones, a well-known Porthcawl family.

The ‘Seabank Spray’ was one of the first ships to enter Bilbao harbour on 20th April with 3500 tons of food. Bilbao eventually fell to the Nationalists on 19th June 1937 the same day the ‘Seabank’ left carrying the contents of the bank of Bilbao securities, money, and gold; whilst the ‘Kenfig Pool’ transported refugees to France.

On March 28th, 1939, the Republicans finally surrendered Madrid, bringing the Spanish Civil War to an end.

CAN A HEALTHY DIET REDUCE ALZHEIMER’S RISK?

In brief, Alzheimer’s is caused by damage to nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain.

Experts believe that this damage stems from a buildup of particular proteins within and between neurons. With time, the level of damage increases.

Early symptoms include memory problems, apathy, and depression. Current treatments can help slow the progression, but there’s no cure.

Some scientists are designing better treatments, others are exploring the risk factors, and still others are looking at whether our diets play a role. Before jumping in, we need to clarify that scientists are still fleshing out the links between nutrients, dietary patterns, and dementia.

There’s no set-in-stone, evidence-based anti-Alzheimer’s diet so we’re not there yet. But as it stands the evidence suggests that a healthy diet might reduce your risk of developing it in later life.

The Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet generally contains plenty of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, olives, and olive oil.  It also includes moderate amounts of fish and fat-free and low-fat dairy products, as well as small amounts of red and processed meats.

The authors of the review conclude that following the Mediterranean diet more closely seems to be linked to a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s.

The review’s authors believe that the Mediterranean diet lowers the risk because it’s linked to reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are central to Alzheimer’s progression.

The above is an extract from a much longer article to be found at www.joinzoe.com/learn/healthy-diet-alzheimers-risk?

TIME FOR A CHANGE?

When was the last time you attempted to modify your behaviour? Perhaps you wanted to start getting up earlier in the morning or going to bed at a different time. Trying to eat or drink in a different way, more of one food or drink and less of another. How did you find that went? Easy or difficult? Were you able to maintain the new behaviour or was it quite challenging.

Yet most days something or someone will irritate us and the cry inside us goes up, why do they do that? It’s so irritating why don’t they change they know it gets on my nerves! I keep telling them. Having read the previous paragraphs, you know the reason why they don’t; it is hard, hard to change ourselves, so stop trying to change another.

Next time it happens pause and notice how you feel and where and what the sensation is. Maybe anger or frustration and wanting things to be different. If you can’t change someone else’s behaviour you can choose to react differently towards it. Maybe you have noticed a pattern and next time the pattern begins you can remove yourself from the situation or react to it differently. Either way it’s your choice, it’s your life. Be gentle on yourself.

FINANCE

SO, LET’S DISPEL THE MYTHS…

It’s been the strangest Summer for the borrowing and lending market, with mortgage holders praying for lower rates as deals come to an end; then we have those in their later years who either have a mortgage they have to redeem or they have a need to find capital to help Family or pay for home repairs or improvements, among so many other things.

Let’s take the myths out of Later Life Borrowing, often what has been known as Equity Release. The term ‘equity’ is not some mysterious thing, it simply refers to the ‘profit’ you have gained as house prices have increased or the excess value in your property over and above any borrowings you already have against the house, typically a mortgage or home improvement loan.

Releasing this equity or excess value is simply a way of accessing capital to use for any number of good reasons at a time of your life when borrowing money to meet your needs may not always be possible due to age or lower levels of income, typically pension. Indeed many types of finance are harder to come by when you’re older so using a little of what you already own (the excess cash in your property) is an approved, heavily regulated method of people in later life being able to access the money they need.

The poor value products of yesteryear, especially the 1980s, have long disappeared having been outlawed and ceased, having been replaced with modern, flexible solutions with far greater customer protection, even better in certain ways than that offered often with a traditional mortgage. Such products are based on the needs of retired people primarily, or those typically 60-plus years, and can be the best, sometimes only solution for customers needing help.

You simply cannot lose your home; you are permitted to live in it till death (or enter permanent care in a home); you can make interest payments; you cannot be repossessed; you can access cash for any legal purpose. Further, in the case of a couple, were one to become deceased or moved into care, the surviving partner can still remain at the property, no change. If you also wish in later years, you have the right to downsize and take the borrowing with you, subject to certain conditions. I could go on with more information, too much to mention here – however a chat over your options costs nothing but your time and your best interests served, especially more so now, under the new Customer Duty rules. If it’s not suitable for you, we will tell you so and why.

Please call us on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 for an appointment with no obligation and free of charge – we’d be delighted to assist with the information you need to know.

NEW BEGINNINGS

The summer holidays are nearly over, and the children go back to school and students return to their studies. So, what do the responsible adults do? It’s a little like the New Year in many respects, as we need to make resolutions and get our future back on track.

In looking forward we need to reflect on the past and see what needs changing. Someone told me recently how much she had learnt from her mistakes and was planning to make lots more to progress with her life. I had to think about that for a moment, as it was so heavily loaded with what we do in the financial world.

Here’s the thing, how often do we tell ourselves ‘I’ll do that tomorrow’ or ‘now in a minute’ and it never gets done. The most successful people have adopted the mantra ‘do it now’ in their lives so how would that work for people who need financial advice?

All those little pension pots that you’ve been ignoring for years, wouldn’t it be so much easier for you if we could combine them all in one pension portfolio and take away that irritating problem. The same for ISA accounts with different companies when did you last ask someone to review them and make them work harder for you. The same with those shares someone may have left you, you can’t bring yourself to review them as you’re emotionally attached, but you should to ensure you’re not losing money. What about that tax query, it won’t go away you know!

Then there was that will you wanted to change but there’s never time. Then the mortgage that past you by when rates went up, I bet that’s hurting just now!

Who said procrastination was the thief of life, well they were right. So, get out all those financial documents gathering dust and losing money and hurting your brain and throw them on the kitchen table and call your financial advisor. We give one hour’s free advice and paracetamol. DO IT NOW!

CHANGES TO THE RIGHTS OF TENANTS IN ENGLAND AND WALES

On 1st December 2022, the Renting Homes (Amendment) (Wales) Bill came into force which changed the rental property landscape in Wales. England is now following suit with an expected change to the law in Spring 2024 and will affect tenants and landlords alike. Some of the changes include abolishing Assured Shorthold Tenancies and Section 21 No-Fault Eviction Notices and creating a legal right to keep pets for renters.

Currently Assured Shorthold Tenancies (AST’s) give landlords an automatic right to regain possession of a property through a Section 21 ‘no fault’ eviction notice where they don’t have to explain the reason for the eviction. By abolishing AST’s, many tenancies will become “assured”, preventing landlords from regaining possession through Section 21 notices and giving tenants more protection from eviction.

In addition, the Bill provides tenants with the right to ask a landlord’s permission to keep a pet in their rented property and ensures that landlords do not unreasonably withhold consent, with a tenant having the right to challenge a landlord’s decision.

The Government also proposes making pet insurance a permitted payment, meaning landlords will be able to require

pet insurance to cover any damage to their properties. These provisions aim to provide more rights to tenants with pets while protecting the interests of landlords in case of pet-related damage to their properties. How can we help you?

With offices in England and Wales, the Property Litigation team at Redkite can offer legal advice on all Landlord and Tenant matters under both English and Welsh Law.

If you would like help or guidance, or if you have any other queries, please contact our team of experts at Redkite Solicitors. We are here to help and support you every step of the way.

“The September garden thins out, as though the colour and light were being gently stretched, the sun drops in the sky and the thinning leaves sieve it like muslin.” (Monty Don). How lovely!

Stop feeding container plants now as shrubs in pots will produce new soft growth if fed, give them one last feed of potash (rock potash if you want to be organic) which will ripen the wood building up their resilience to rigours of winter, they deserve it!

It’s a good time to plant new perennials, whilst the soil is still warm and moist for their little roots to become established before winter sets in. It’s such fun choosing new plants (you deserve it!)

The art of keeping the September garden vibrant is (you’ve guessed it) deadheading, daily taking off all fading flowers to encourage the plant (such as Dahlias, Cosmos and Zinnias - all plants that originate near the equator) to make new buds for as long as the days (and nights) stay warm.

Did you know Dahlia’s (they’re originally from Mexico) were first declared a vegetable as the tubers are edible. However the Dahlia delicacy, part of the Aztec diet, failed to take off in Europe (wonder why!)

September, mellow fruitfulness!  After such a topsy-turvy summer let’s hope we now can experience an Indian summer to make up for such a wet and chilly July.  If you haven’t already done so we need to be buying our daffodil bulbs and planting them up.  Plant in bowls, hyacinth for Christmas flowering, order tulip bulbs in readiness for your spring displays.  Plant spring cabbage, keep harvesting vegetables, pick early apples & pears and enjoy those late flowering perennials.

A big thank you to all those that helped with our 51st Annual Horticultural Show, held after such a difficult summer with extremely difficult growing conditions, we did so very well. Thank you too to Cllr Huw David who kindly came along to present cups and trophies, much appreciated.   It was well supported and we are very grateful to all those that visited Laleston Gardening Club.  This month we will be taking a trip to Aberglasney Gardens and will end September with our traditional Harvest Supper celebrating the end of summer and all that we have enjoyed in our gardens.  For more information take a look at our Facebook page regularly updated.

PYLE AND KENFIG GOLF CLUB

Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club have just won both the Men’s and Women’s Team Championships, the first time since 2006 any Club has achieved the double. The Men’s Team battled through an incredibly exciting Final at Porthmadog Golf Club against Glamorganshire Golf Club. The Women’s Team managed to use home course advantage in a repeat of last year’s Final, where they edged a closely fought match against Newport Golf Club. Congratulations to Captains Tom Peet and Claire Hopkin as well as all the players involved; Sean David, Sam Peet, Ronan Oliver, David Phillips, Matthew Peet, Fauve Birch, Elin Tynan, Cerys Mitchell, Chloe James and Cheryl Western. A truly remarkable achievement.

On top of this, Tom Peet, Ronan Oliver and Sean David won the Wales Golf Pairs competition the Victory Shield at Newport Golf Club last month and the Men’s Team won Glamorgan County Golf Premier League by winning all 10 of their matches ending with a 100% record. An outstanding effort from everyone and excellent to see the teams made up of several golfers coming through the Club’s junior academy system. What an incredible season for Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club.
