FREE CAR PARKING AT PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, On Friday 10th July we had permission by The First Minister “to go anywhere,” so our car parks were full at weekends and have been full since. Not so full during the week, but free car parking in Porthcawl - that’s something to look forward to. But is it? Will Bridgend County Borough Council be ringing its hands in grief, in January 2021, because they have a shortfall in “this and that”? Porthcawl could be taking £100’s of pounds a day, since July 10th, but they are not - why? Is it because their employees would have to handle cash? Then let them wear gloves (our shop assistants are handling cash all the time!!!) The bin liners that are covering the parking machines are literally in tatters, is this the way to show off to the public ‘The Jewel in Bridgend County Borough Council’s Crown’??? It would be useful if the residents of Porthcawl could have an answer from either Jamie Wallis, Carwyn Jones or Councillor Huw David. Watch this space… Patricia Capron, Porthcawl

RAISE A MUG FOR MACMILLAN THIS SEPTEMBER Dear Editor, I am writing to ask your readers to raise a mug for Macmillan Cancer Support’s 30th annual Coffee Morning so we can provide vital support to people with cancer, who need it now more than ever. This year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning will be on Friday 25 September, but we are encouraging people to get involved whenever and wherever they can by hosting a virtual or socially distanced event. Nothing stops a Macmillan Coffee Morning! Before Covid-19, many patients told Macmillan being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment was the scariest thing that they could imagine. These anxieties and concerns have not gone away during the pandemic – they’ve been made worse - meaning Macmillan needs support from people in Wales more than ever to provide the vital support people living with cancer rely on. Macmillan is doing everything we can to offer medical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer and our work is almost entirely funded by donations. Every penny raised by Coffee Morning helps Macmillan to provide this support, which is needed now more than ever before. Readers can sign up now by visiting macmillan.org.uk/ coffee or by searching for Macmillan Coffee Morning. For support, information, or just a chat, you can call Macmillan free on 0808 808 0000 or visit macmillan.org.uk. Richard Pugh Head of Partnerships, Macmillan in Wales

FREE SCHOOL TRANSPORT?
LOST GOLD SOVEREIGN PENDANT
Dear Editor, Obviously at the moment we are in unprecedented times with lots of people being affected by COVID-19 whether it’s financially or health-wise. A problem we are having at the moment is with my son’s class who have just finished year 6 and are about to move up to comprehensive school year 7 in September. Not only did they not get a typical Year 6 school year, celebrations and closure like many other schools across the country. They didn’t have the transition to comprehensive school like previous years which we all fully understood the reasons why but it doesn’t make it easier for them nonetheless. Since leaving year 6 we have been left with little communication from the comprehensive apart from videos for them to watch introducing teachers. We have finally been given a start date while we all struggle to get but when talking to the primary school they have just left our children without giving any information regarding what class they were in next year...until many of us persisted to get that information, we had to find out from other primary school parents where they are to go on their first day. Most importantly at the moment our biggest fight has been actually safely getting them to school. We have been told by the school and the council that no bus will be provided for our children this year if they live within 3 miles. Now as you can imagine this would be daunting for any 11 year old to walk up to 3 miles to School. Most of the class also said in a survey (that has only just come to light that the children took last year in school) they wouldn’t feel comfortable walking all that way but they seem to not have been taken into account. It’s a school they’ve only visited a handful of times to then feel totally lost when they get there. We have been told they have safely assessed the route which contains many main roads and busy road crossings but this walk will also be done at the busiest time of days which is drop off to school and pick up from school. As well as all the stuff that the children will need for school, PE kits, folders, stationary, pack lunch and coat if necessary. We have been met with Legislations and surveys but without anybody actually assessing the children’s road safety these are busy roads which commonly have car accidents which a lot of us parents feel is highly unsafe when every previous year a bus has been provided to safely transport the children to school. We all understand that everybody is in the same position when they’ve left year 6 to go up to comp but the main difference has been the lack of communication for us parents, the lack of communication and information that our children have had and now on top of that they are now being refused transport to school that all previous years have been supplied with. We have been told if they have older siblings that are already in comprehensive school they would be allowed a bus pass, so the council have totally wash their hands of them. We have been told they are fairly giving out bus passes, but we are yet to see any children that have actually had one, so what is our money being spent on if the council are making cuts with regards to children safety. Stephanie Rowe, North Cornelly
Dear Editor, Lost on 14 July 2020 somewhere between Picton Avenue, Wells Street and John Street a gold sovereign pendant. This is of great sentimental value to its owner. Please ring 01656 783861. Thank you. Ann Parfitt

HEALTH COST OF CANCER
BENEFITS OF FASTING
Hi everyone, I do hope you are all ok. Can you believe it is September? The whole year does not feel quite real does it? Thank you to those who did the Valley to Coast Walk 18 miles over the month of August. It means a lot to us that you still wanted to do it. If you have raised sponsorship if you could get it in to us as soon as you can. We have some Wonderful news. The giving platform we used before lockdown – Wonderful.org are starting back up again but not just that they’re also creating a new platform called Wonderful Payments, this is for those who just want to “donate” to us without the need to do an event. We are currently using PayPal but that can work out expensive but Wonderful Payments are going to charge just 10p per transaction, which could save the charity so much money. All will be up and running again soon. I’ll keep you posted. Keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
When you fast, human growth hormone levels go up and insulin levels go down. Your body’s cells also change the expression of genes and initiate important cellular repair processes. Weight loss is the most common reason for people to try intermittent fasting. By making you eat fewer meals, it can lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake. Additionally, intermittent fasting changes hormone levels to facilitate weight loss. In addition to lowering insulin and increasing growth hormone levels, it increases the release of the fat burning hormone norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Also it can have many benefits for your body and brain. It can cause weight loss and may reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. It may also help you live longer. MEDITATION There is an old saying: A single hair conceals the mountain. Thought is a single hair. It is thin, brittle and insubstantial. But it grabs our attention so strongly That we can see nothing else. We live in a world of thought And imagine it to be the real world. Meditation reveals a way out Of the stifling world of thought. We withdraw from without regret. We change our focus. And now we see the mountain. We see the leaves On the trees On the mountain slope Fluttering in the wind. Ajahn Jayasaro I am planning a meditation day on Saturday 19th of September at Sanghapadipa Temple, Swansea. Transport can be arranged to the venue. Given to those who wish to go forward with the meditative life. Please contact me to arrange attendance. evansneville@aol.com Neville Evans

SPORTS THERAPY Hi I am Gareth Charnock I am a qualified Sports Therapist at Level 3 and 4 at diploma level and I have been in practice since 2018. I have a treatment room based at Porthcawl Health and Fitness. Sports massage can help reduce muscle tension and DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), enhances performance, alleviates and treats injuries. It benefits pre and post events i.e cycling events, running events any sport you partake in regularly really like rugby, football, and swimming. It can help performance and recovery. I offer rock blade, kinesiology taping and cupping at my clinic. Sports massage is worth considering if you participate in regular exercise. Sports Massage can also help people who do not participate in sport if you are sat at a desk could be from repetitive strain injury, tennis elbow, and sciatica and muscle spasm. The treatment takes around an hour, where I take a full history and will provide my findings and a plan forward. My priority is to my clients to ensure they get the best recovery. One of the reasons I became involved in Sports therapy is due to injuries I incurred myself. Contact via facebook or social media www.porthcawlsportstherapy.co.uk

NEWS SIXTH FORM DECISION IS WELCOME I am delighted at the news that sixth forms are to be retained at every school in Bridgend County Borough. I met a delegation of pupils from Cynffig Comprehensive in particular who were totally opposed to any attempts to scrap their sixth form. I gave my full backing to their campaign because I believe that having a sixth form in every school is essential not just for educational reasons but also because the sixth formers act as mentors for younger pupils. They provide the role models that younger pupils need. Also, each school is at the very heart of their community and is easily accessible to pupils and their families. With the cuts to free school transport due to affect sixth formers in future, most will now be able to reach their local school which would not have been the case if they had to make their way to a sixth form located in another school miles away. But I will reserve judgment on the council’s plans to introduce more blended learning into sixth forms and would welcome feedback from pupils about how this actually works in practice. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend
RESPECTING YOUR LOCAL ENVIRONMENT With many of us more environmentally aware and protective of our local environment, it is disappointing to see a rise in the amount of litter on many of our beaches and beauty spots. It is sad to see a minority acting in this selfish way, leaving their litter and not treating our beauty spots with respect. There is simply no excuse for leaving litter. It is not someone else’s problem. We all have our part to play. During one litter pick session in Porthcawl organised by volunteers, over 35 bags full of rubbish were collected from Coney Beach and the Salt Lake car park. Among the many items left on beaches are plastic cups, bottles, wet wipes, food packaging and discarded PPE items- single use facemasks and gloves. The latter is especially causing concern, as they are not only harmful to the environment as they do not degrade but they also pose a clear health and safety risk. It is vital that these items are disposed of correctly in a nonrecyclable waste bag or bin. We need to appreciate and value what we have. Please enjoy the outdoors safely, responsibly and take home your litter.

CHANGES TO EXAMS ASSESSMENTS WELCOMED The furore over A-level results was justified. While no one set out to devise an unfair scheme, too many students were allocated grades, which didn’t reflect their abilities. That’s why I’m pleased that teacher assessments will be used for both A level and GCSE results. While there will always be some students who fall short of their predicted grades, it was quite another thing for a computer to flunk an imaginary exam for them. As Shadow Welsh Education Secretary, I am part of a new committee at the Senedd taking evidence to ensure that this debacle cannot happen again. We have no way of knowing whether this year’s Covid crisis, which prevented students from sitting exams, will happen in years to come so we need to come up with a better way of ensuring that pupils are fairly assessed in future. Of course, there is still confusion as universities who rejected some pupils on the basis of the computer-awarded grades may have allocated those places to others. I urge university chiefs to consider ways of accommodating pupils who, through no fault of their own, were unfairly downgraded and lost their first choice places. BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE Our picture, taken last January at a Grassroots for Europe meeting in London, shows Steven Bray, the ‘Stop Brexit Man’, a familiar figure from TV news. The media often describe Steve as a “Coin dealer from Port Talbot”, but Bridgend can proudly claim him: he lived in Brackla and Heol-y-Frenhines when younger. Immediately after the June 2016 referendum, Steve re-located to London, staying with friends and supporters. He has campaigned outside parliament virtually every day that MPs have been sitting, regularly stealing the scene with his top-hat, flags and megaphone when reporters interview politicians, especially those of the “Leave” persuasion. Over these years, several B4E members have travelled to join Steve and his stalwart supporters in Parliament Square or College Green for a few hours at a time, as have hundreds of others from all over the UK and overseas. Steve is still busy in public life. His stated priorities now are fighting government corruption, campaigning for proportional representation, and working towards rejoining the EU. He says, “We need political change before we can move on”. Steve and his Stand of Defiance European Movement (SODEM) group can be followed on Facebook and Twitter. PORTHCAWL RNLI
Porthcawl lifeboat crews have launched on 28 occasions to call outs since lockdown was introduced on 23 March. Volunteers have maintained launching throughout to those in distress whilst following RNLI and government guidelines. At Porthcawl we had to suspend normal exercising on Wednesdays and Sundays once lockdown came into effect but some on-line training was successfully introduced. RNLI statistics for 2019 have been released and once again Porthcawl was the busiest lifeboat station in Wales with 100 launches, 10 lives saved and 123 people aided. Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Philip Missen MBE said, ‘Not once have our volunteers waivered from the need to launch. I am very proud of their support and last year’s statistics demonstrate their dedication. The impact could have been so different for the families of those ten we saved and indeed the speed at which we were able to assist the 123 before their situation worsened’. This year Porthcawl celebrate the 55th anniversary of the reopening of our station and plans were in place back in February to launch a special festival of fund raising. However, like many, our plans were cancelled which has caused serious concerns in terms of covering the cost of RNLI operations here and nationwide. We encourage members of the public to follow our website http://www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk for sea safety messages and updates of our rescues etc. Ian Stroud
HOW BAKING BROUGHT THE PEOPLE OF PORTHCAWL TOGETHER It started when one woman asked her mother to bake a cake for her to take to hospital staff after she heard that NHS workers were working incredibly long shifts and weren’t even having a lunch break. “I was really concerned and wanted to help frontline staff in a small way,” said Porthcawl resident Mandy Sidoli. “As word got around the town lots more bakers joined us and Porthcawl NHS Bakers was born!” “I am astonished how one little idea evolved into something so totally amazing. It shows true community spirit. Every week of lockdown, around 70 people, from 3 to 93 years, baked cakes as
a way of showing their support and thanks to frontline staff.” “The goodies were collected and delivered to local hospitals, ambulance stations, the medical centre, doctors’ surgeries, community nurse teams, mental health teams and even the NHS 111 staff.” Photos of the bakers’ amazing creations on social media generated great interest, including from celebrity baker Paul Hollywood and TV chef James Martin. Mandy continues, “It was then suggested that we put together a recipe book with all these mouth-watering recipes. Again the support to produce the Porthcawl NHS Bakers’ Book has been phenomenal. Many local businesses sponsored production, including the Craft Bakers Association (CBA), which represents approximately 500 bakery businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. All proceeds go to Cwm Taf Morgannwg NHS General Charitable Fund.” Karen Dear, Director of Operations for the CBA said, “This book is a celebration of what the NHS does for us all, and we are thrilled to be sponsoring it. It is great to see so many bakers come together to show their appreciation of the NHS by donating recipes. We hope the book gives pleasure to many people and raises funds for an extremely worthy cause.” The Porthcawl NHS Bakers’ Book is £7.99 and available from local shops including Divine, Porthcawl Butchers, Nottage Stores and Supervalue. RESISTANCE COUPLES: LUCIE AND RAYMOND AUBRAC
A REMARKABLE WOMAN In St John’s Churchyard, Newton, you may have noticed the grave of Richard and Elizabeth Parfitt. Elizabeth died in her 103rd year! Elizabeth Thomas was born, four years before the Crimean War, on 3rd August 1851 into a mining family in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire. In 1883 she met and married Richard Parfitt, a widower, which necessitated her leaving the teaching profession. They set up home in Newport where Elizabeth assisted her husband in his business as an iron merchant and where she gave birth to three children: Mary, Richard and Hilda. In 1909 Richard retired and the family moved to Greyfriars, Newton, Porthcawl. Mary married local businessman and Porthcawl Councillor Mr John Lewis Lambert; who sadly died at the Somme in October 1916. Richard and Elizabeth became very active members of St John’s Church where Elizabeth sang in the choir and where she paid for the rebuilding of the Newton Church organ in 1927;three years after the death of her husband. Following Richard’s death, she found great solace in music. This passion would result in her having singing lessons at 70 years old and becoming well known on concert platforms in Wales. At 87 years old she even began making gramophone records! She died on 6th March 1954. Ceri Joseph

Lucie Samuel, a history teacher in peacetime, was a leading member of the French Resistance. In 1939, she married Raymond Aubrac. The couple engaged in acts of sabotage against the Nazis. They also produced flyers and Libération, an underground newspaper. In June 1943, the Gestapo arrested Raymond and sentenced him to death. However, Lucie concocted an audacious escape plan. Under French law, engaged couples were allowed to marry if one of them was soon to die. Therefore, Lucie claimed that Raymond was her fiancé. She was pregnant at the time, carrying her second child (of three). She claimed the right to marriage and the Nazis granted her wish. After the ‘marriage’ ceremony, the local Resistance executed Lucie’s plan. In cars, they ambushed a Gestapo lorry enroute to the prison and liberated fifteen prisoners. In the melee, Lucie freed Raymond and the couple escaped. Lucie once said: “Resistance is not just something locked away in the period 1939-45. Resistance is a way of life, an intellectual and emotional reaction to anything which threatens human liberty.” Hannah Howe, international bestselling author of Ann’s War (set in Porthcawl) and Eve’s War (set in France). https://hannah-howe.com

Porthcawl Comprehensive School was delighted to be able to distribute results to students at AS and A2. These results are the outcome of the unique and most challenging set of circumstances for students and staff. We are delighted that students have reached, and in most cases exceeded, their potential. Students have had their endeavour rewarded with some amazing results. There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for parents who have supported their sons and daughters. Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home. In these remarkable circumstances, we are proud of the integrity and thoroughness of the centre awarded grades that have helped to shape these fantastic results. There was a huge range of courses applied for this year from Aeronautical Engineering, Make Up for Media and Performance, Politics and International Relations, Cancer Sciences, to the more traditional English and Law. Students are heading off to universities far and wide, Keele, London, Southampton, Bangor and all points in between. These excellent results will ensure Porthcawl students have secured places at some of the best universities in the country and will help to unlock potentially wonderful futures. Congratulations to staff and students for their hard work and steadfast dedication in the most difficult of circumstances. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher
OUTDOOR LEARNING WITH SEAQUEST Outdoor Learning (OL) is active learning in the outdoors though educational play. OL enables pupils to enjoy challenging and unfamiliar experiences, test and develop their physical, social, and personal skills. Not only does OL happen in the natural environments where children can see, hear, touch, and smell the real thing, it’s a place where actions have real results and consequences. By working in the outdoors, children learn through what they do, encounter, and discover. Research has shown that active learning develops the learning skills essential for work within the classroom. While children learn about the outdoors, themselves, and each other, they also learn to love the outdoors. Ultimately to learn to love something, leads to the desire to protect it. SeaQuest has developed a Coastal Conservation and Education Programme aligned with the Curriculum for Wales. Our outdoor learning programme has been delivered to over 100 Primary and Secondary schools. We have partnered with organisations including Cardiff University, BCBC, RNLI to deliver a number of successful conservation projects. We are currently working with schools to develop ways in which we can continue to bring the opportunities of OL to schools and to support teaching staff going forward in this current situation. THE BELLS OF ABERDYFI
SERIOUS TIMES
PRAY
The sunken city lies beneath the sunken sea, Like some long submerged memory, Down far below the upper deep, Resting in an ageless sleep. Oft has the tale been told, How in Cantre’r Gwaelod old, Seithenyn blundered and the city sank, How the people ate and drank! The casks of wine and beer were poured, While waves through the gateways roared. Too late was the warning raised – They heard it not where bright torches blazed, They heard it not where glad music played. How Aberdyfi’s bells rang loud! But non among the merry crowd, Heard the bell’s loud-ringing chime, As water up the high walls climbed. Until - for an instant the musicians ceased, The bell’s high ringing fell loud upon the feast. And Seithenyn with his wine engrossed, Recalled with horror his forsaken post – Too late his folly to undo – The wild waves came tumbling through. The city now is hid fast from sight, Hidden since that fateful night. Yet stand when the wind blows hard upon the shore, And listen for the ringing bells above the sunken floor. Dafydd Matthews, North Cornelly
Of those of us who survived the war, Nothing like panic buying. Today, it’s grab it while you can, These times are very trying. But then, we were, on rations, Could only have our share. Powdered milk, potato too, Was something we had to bear. But the threat came from skies, Not from a serious plague. It seems there is no remedy, The future very vague. God bless all the careers, Within the NHS.. All the doctor, medics, With pressure from the press. Cannot go on holidays, Or trips down to the beach. No socialising anywhere, Two metres out of reach. Every Thursday evening we, We clap to praise the nurses. We hope when this is over, They will be rewarded, With money in their purses. The NHS was started by, A Welshman, we called him NYE. It would be a tragedy, To let this service die. Derek Evans, Pyle
See Moses on the mountain stand The battle surging far below An enemy seeks to bar their way But God alone gives victory Yes, raise your hands, raise, raise them high For God will answer to your cry Now Moses’ arms are growing weak He’s no more strength to hold them high Come, lest the enemy overcome To snatch from them the victory Lord, raise his hands, please hold them high Lord, come in answer to their cry Friends are now come to raise his hands, Giving him strength to hold them high For victory’s given to those who war Trusting in God who hears their cry

FASHION Mini-skirts and thigh length boots. Wet look dresses plus 50s hoops. Fashion changes every season. In or out no given reason. What once was in, is now old hat. That much, loved dress is now just tat! The swinging 60s brought psychedelic. In modern times that’s just a relic. Victorian necklines while daring low. Must cover ankles don’t you know. 70s flares and wing collared shirts. Floppy hats and maxi skirts. Feathered hairstyles, coloured strands. Gave way to mullets for many bands. Hemlines changed from long to short. The midi skirt was one I bought. The denim look must reappear. In any form from year to year. Like peacocks, models glide along. Impossibly slim their limbs are long. There are always designers to recommend. Whatever fashion and changing trend. Bridie Banwell, Bridgend
So we too now must raise our hands, Together let us raise them high And know that God will hear our prayers And answer to his people’s cry Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL ROTARY ROUND UP
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
During the Covid-19 restrictions Porthcawl Rotary club have been actively working behind the scenes to support its members and the wider community. We meet every Monday via ZOOM. We continue to raise funds for its ongoing charities including Rotary Foundation, Rotary Doctor Bank, End Polio Now, as well as local charities. Porthcawl Rotary is very pleased to welcome recent new members, Viv Gage, Judith Shawe, Madeleine Moon, Jonathan Lewis and Teddy Kalongo. The club now has a healthy 40 members. At a recent ZOOM meeting Rotarian Madeleine Moon gave members an interesting talk of her experience of life after losing her seat as the MP for Bridgend. This year we celebrate our 70th Birthday and our new President Andrew Singer and his team have been preparing for the forthcoming celebrations. The first President of our Club when it was founded 70 years ago was Arthur Rees. To celebrate this event, a commemorative plaque is to be placed on the Rotary bench opposite the Atlantic Hotel. We would like to thank the public for their support. Keep safe and well. For more information about Rotary and its activities please contact Jeff Perren at: jeff@perrenpartners.co.uk Rtn. Robert Lee
Hey folks, no doubt we are living in anxious times. Therefore, I hope these thoughts will help you. In 1 Peter 5 v 7, Peter tells us to cast all our anxieties, or cares, on the Lord, for he cares about us. Notice the word “cast”. Peter was a fisherman and understood something about casting. The kind of casting he has in mind here is a forceful throwing out from yourself. Maybe you have seen fishermen cast out their lines, or their nets, in such a way. Well Peter says we can do the same with our worries, cares and anxieties. Isn’t that amazing! We don’t need to carry our anxieties. We can give them over to the Lord. There is a condition however. Peter also tells us that we need to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand. This means we acknowledge him as God and turn to him for help. Dare I say it but this only really works when there is sincere humility and acknowledgement of our need for God in our lives. If you are anxious why don’t you humble yourself and turn to God. Cast your cares upon him. It will do you good! God bless, Neil Harvey

‘The Atlantis Project’ is an exciting and thought-provoking audio series for ages 11+ in 5 parts; co-created by Bridgend-based artist Chris Harris, and Oslo-based writer Eliot Moleba. North Sag is a fictional seaside community that’s about to be lost to the sea due to rising sea levels; threatening the existence of the multicultural community that lives there. On the journey, we uncover the effects of climate change on culture through the adventurous and heart-warming story of Evie and Deean - two teenagers who invite us into their world of friendship, crisis and acceptance. The audio series will be released 11th September 2020 @ 7pm. The episodes will be available on AM, Soundcloud and www.chrisharristheatre.com | www.am.cymru. we have been clearing out our sheds, garages etc. let alone the attic and the result has been not surprisingly a large amount of tools donated that will need sorting. As we have a limited amount of storage space, we therefore unfortunately shall not be collecting or taking further donations until the middle of October. TRINITY CHURCH
PORTHCAWL U3A
We are happy to announce that Trinity Church will be holding a Sunday morning service every week at 10.30 from September 6th. We will be following the current Government guidelines regarding Covid-19 and practising social distancing and safe practices. A letter has been sent to all members giving full details. We have to limit places to 36 seats so please pre-book a place via telephone if possible. We will also be performing a live Zoom session during the service so that members can join in from home. We will continue to provide recordings. Essential repairs are required in the church, especially to the toilets. We are planning a Church Repair Appeal and will explore fund raising options. Our Trinity Bargain Store has opened on selected mornings outside the church. We welcome your support. Our children’s activities including Mother and Toddlers and Messy Church will not be resuming in September. The situation will be reviewed following further easing of Lockdown restrictions. Please contact Teddy or the pastoral team via telephone, Facebook page or website for any further information. We look forward to being able to meet members and visitors soon. Alison Meredith Thomas Communication Secretary www.trinitychurchporthcawl.org
The only consolation in the fact that nothing much is happening at the moment for us lies in the memory that we would not normally be meeting this month, as we would all be on holiday! I am delighted to announce that we have had another mention in the U3A Newsletter. Last month they covered our cyclists and mask makers. This month we congratulate Susan Bodsworth on having a photograph selected for the EYE Gallery. The theme was ‘Abstract’ and Sue photographed one of her own paintings entitled ‘Acrylic Paints’ to submit as her entry. It was chosen as one of the fifteen, which are selected for each exhibition. All the exhibitions, held fortnightly through lockdown, are available on the Newsletter page on U3A.org.uk. Do have a look and see all the photos for yourself. Lockdown rules have relaxed for outdoor activity and we are planning Walks and Social Cycling trips for September. Details to be announced soon. We will meet again – Stay Safe. LEGAL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have separated from my husband and wish to seek legal advice. I have recently lost my job due to COVID and do not know which way to turn as I will struggle to afford the cost of a solicitor. How much will such advice cost and is there an alternative?| Answer:I am sorry to learn of your recent job loss and truly appreciate that this must be a distressing time on top of separating from your husband. Some solicitors’ practices offer a short free session for new clients which may assist you. However, in my view, it is difficult to glean all of the facts of the case, provide advice and discuss an action plan in the space of twenty to thirty minutes in the office with a new client. Some firms still offer public funding but you will have to satisfy strict criteria on income and legal merits. However, you should look into this as a possible option. Many solicitors offer a reduced fixed fee for new consultations and my advice is that you consider this. As a firm, we offer a fixed fee of £200 inclusive of VAT for new clients for up to one hour during which you will be provided with detailed advice and if so required, an action plan to help you move forward. We can provide fixed fees for the Divorce process and offer competitive hourly rates for financial matters and children issues etc. We will always encourage you to consider Mediation which is very cost effective and a great way of resolving matters without Court intervention, the latter of which is very costly. Some clients may qualify for Mediation public funding. We will advise alongside the Mediation process and draw up any necessary documentation formalising the terms you have agreed in Mediation. INHERITANCE An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member. And, unfortunately, inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. As a beneficiary, you do not normally need to claim your inheritance or pay any inheritance tax – the executors should deal with this. You may, however, need to be patient. Administering an estate can be time-consuming and it often takes several months before a beneficiary receives an inheritance. Family inheritance becomes problematic if there is no will or if you feel the will was unfair. If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (e.g. misinterpreting the will) or deliberately. Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, time-consuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice. CARE HOME PLANNING
SOLICITORS • CYFREITHWYR CONVEYANCING - Moving House? We offer a friendly and efficient service at a fixed price with all the work carried out by a qualified Solicitor Contact Mike Greenway for more information and a written quotation
It is normal to be concerned about what will happen to your assets if you have to go into a care home. You may be worried that your house will have to be sold to pay for care home fees. A popular misconception is that you could transfer your house to your children in order to avoid this happening. A local authority will undertake a means assessment when deciding whether a person should have financial assistance to pay for care home fees. If the local council thinks that you have deliberately reduced your assets to avoid care fees, which is known as a willing deprivation of assets, they may still include the value of those assets when they do the means test. When your council is deciding whether your getting rid of property and money has been a deliberate deprivation of assets, they will consider two things. Firstly whether you knew at the time you got rid of your property or money that you needed or may need care and support. Secondly, avoiding paying for care must have been a significant reason for giving away your home or reducing your savings. It’s not just giving away your money that could be seen as a deliberate deprivation of assets. Different methods of reducing your money or property could count too, including giving away a lump sum of money, transferring the title deeds of your property to someone else, suddenly spending a lot of money in a way which is unusual for your normal spending, gambling the money away or using savings to buy possessions, such as jewellery or a car, which would be excluded from the means test. Therefore, you should consider the above very carefully in order to avoid falling into this trap. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

FINANCE AND THE CHANGES JUST GO ON AND ON
THE COBRA DILEMMA The cobra effect occurs when an attempted solution to a problem makes the problem worse, as a type of unintended consequence. The term is used to illustrate the causes of incorrect stimulation in the economy and our political system. The term ‘cobra dilemma’ comes from an anecdote that describes an occurrence in India during British occupation a long time back. The British Government was concerned about the number of poisonous cobras in Delhi so they offered a reward for every dead cobra that was brought to the authorities. This was a very successful strategy to reduce the number of venomous snakes and the reward money proved to be a good income for many people so much so several enterprising individuals took advantage and began breeding snakes for the reward! When the authorities became aware of this the reward programme was scrapped causing the creative cobra breeders to set free their worthless snakes and so the cobra population became worse than ever. The same was the case long ago in Vietnam when the authorities paid a bounty for every rat killed in Hanoi. To collect your money you had to produce the rat’s tail. Officials became curious as to the number of rats in the city without tails and realised they were being duped by the rat catchers who were releasing the rats back into the sewers to produce even more rats for revenue. Where this leads us to today is where governments are rewarding us in possibly ambiguous ways in the furlough scheme when countless individuals are opening stock broking accounts with their money thus further fuelling the markets for the wrong reasons and setting themselves up for a fall. Allegedly countless companies and people are falsely claiming furlough funds and the authorities are not in a rush to investigate as long as the money goes back into the economy. There are endless examples in history when the law of unintended consequences comes back to bite us and you wonder whether sometimes it’s best to leave the problem resolve itself but then human nature isn’t like that is it? We can’t help but interfere.
Back in 2008 when the financial crash was at its height, the mortgage industry was a scary place to be as lenders shut up shop and the buzz word became ‘NO’ when mortgages were applied for. Forward to 2020 and we see a crisis driven by COVID-19, people working from home, unemployment rising and poised for a spike when the furlough scheme ends in October. Little wonder lenders are changing the rules almost daily it seems. Nationwide rocked the boat by stating that for the foreseeable future parental gifts of cash to get children on the property ladder, would now have to topped up by deposit already saved by the son or daughter, punching something of a hole in the plans of many. Bank of Mum and Dad cannot be entirely relied on then. However, the good news is that, as whole of market Mortgage Advisers, we know all the lenders who ARE still allowing FULL parental gifts to apply to such house purchasers, so don’t despair, just pick up the phone – 01656 782545 / 07768 418308. We are likely to be able to help many of you, subject of course to certain criteria being met. For those of you with credit blips on your record, you also should give us a call instead of assuming you’ll fail to get a mortgage. We can’t guarantee that every application will succeed of course but you have nothing to lose by calling – for us to take a look for you won’t cost a penny. We also have the advantage that our new Adviser to the firm, Karen Ferguson, is a mortgage underwriter by trade, so there’s little she doesn’t know after 26 years in the business. For those of you in later life, we are here to assist you too and even if you already have a ‘retirement time mortgage arrangement’ in place, we may well be able to help you lower the interest you’re paying as interest rates are at their lowest ever in this sector of the market. DO NOT go on worrying about that ‘interest-only’ mortgage that you can’t pay off – call us instead on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 and we may be able to sort the problem painlessly for you – there are many lenders looking to help later life borrowers and we know them all.

GARDENING CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Spring may seem a long time off but September is the perfect month to start making preparations for a beautiful floral display when it does finally arrive! Plant bedding such as pansies, wallflowers and sweet william (named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, who led British forces against the Jacobites at the battle Culloden in 1746). Give them a good soak to help them establish quickly. The ground is a giant radiator and the heat from a good summer will remain in the ground for some time, which helps the plants engage with their new home before the onset of winter. Plant hardy greens this month, kale, pak choi and lettuce, lovely for winter pickings! Guard your pond against fallen leaves with a fine mesh covering, done early this will prevent leaves falling into the water which rot and then give off deadly gases which can leave your poor fish floating instead of swimming! Asters, September’s flower derived from the Greek word for star. Mythology has it that the Greek goddess Virgo was devastated by the lack of stars in the night sky and began to cry, wherever her tears touched earth Asters sprouted from the ground! Lovely story. Chris Early
PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY As with many organisations, Covid-19 has prevented us meeting since March. We have been able to reschedule our planned demonstrations but have missed the social interaction. The committee held a garden meeting in August and came to the sad conclusion that we will not be able to restart meetings in September. Our venue is still closed and many of our members are in a high-risk category. Our planned Open evening for November will also be postponed. We are hoping to resume meetings in January 2021 and plan to start with our AGM and fish supper. We will also commence enrolment in January and have a full programme of demonstrations and events planned. Our Afternoon tea in the Grove with Terry Walton will still go ahead depending on Covid-19 restrictions at the time. A letter will be sent to all current members giving further details and we hope to welcome new and established members back to the club in 2021. Please contact our Facebook page for more information. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
September for the Gardening Club would normally be time for our Annual Show, but that’s not to be this year with mass gatherings not being permitted, however our online competition has now been judged and results will follow later. We are hoping to be able to arrange some small outdoor gatherings of members for the members of the Club. These will be by invitation only to keep numbers strictly controlled, but will be an opportunity to meet friends after such a long period of time. The Welsh Government now permit outdoor meetings of up to 30 people from different households. The Club’s premises Cliff Cottage has undergone a facelift during the latter stages of lockdown, it was a good opportunity to have things done whilst the hall was not in use. In our gardens the perennial displays are waning now, but some like rudebeckias are still giving us a splash of colour in the borders. September is a good time to take cuttings from Fuchsia, Penstemon and Lavenders to increase stock. Harvest your vegetable crops and sow seeds for Spring Greens and winter salads. Happy gardening! Remember to follow us on Facebook, new members always welcome. Susan Ford
GARDENER’S WORLD To do a spot of gardening is every one’s delight A border full of flowers is such a lovely sight But when I want a garden tool you can guarantee It’s always at the back of the shed far away from me And when I’ve planted all the seeds neatly in a row Do they look just like the packet? Oh my goodness, no! Spring follows winter and summer follows spring You can bet that drought will follow when the plants go in The drought persists so then; you give the place a soaking And then of course the rain comes down and all your plants are floating No matter how bare the lawn is be it full of barren zones You’ll always find the grass still grows between the paving stones From seeds it seems to take so long for the plants to finally sprout But weeds will grow precisely at the rate that you pull them out Oh, for a lovely garden full of forget-me-nots But all I seem to ever grow is lots of weeds in pots John Davies Eglwys Nunnydd, Margam

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Like the Windmill we never closed! When the ‘old guys’ who run the Stores in Heol y Goedwig stood down during the Corona virus pandemic four younger volunteers stepped forward immediately and took over the reins. We thank Dave Jones, Christine Meredith, Julian Dawe and Nigel Graham for their magnificent work in maintaining our service to our members, and probably some others. As all garden centres were closed our business soared. Social distancing measures were established and rigidly enforced. A major problem was obtaining stock as suppliers shut down and deliveries became very erratic. All our garden visits had to be cancelled, a big disappointment. We hope that our gardens and allotments were a safe refuge from the constant bad news. Frank Fulgoni

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
There’s plenty of music news for a change as we all struggle with this horrid pandemic. Bridgend’s next big thing, Those Damn Crows, have a prestigious spot at next year’s Monsters of Rock at Donington Park on the main stage! They’ve also bagged the support gig with American rockers The Dead Daisies’ European tour. I’m not putting a jinx on anything, for these events will only go ahead if we do see an end to corona virus. The live global and local music scenes have been hit for six and I fear sadly that many venues will not be re-opening. Another band busy in the lockdown is Porthcawl’s Last Flight to Pluto, who’ve been featured in the Prog Magazine with a song of theirs featured on the magazine’s monthly CD. They are also writing songs for their third album. Next month I’ll check out Moose Thomas’ band ‘Kill the Lights’ and Kenfig Hill’s Jayce Lewis’ new project ‘Ascension of the Watchers’. Keep your music information coming in, stay safer and keep to your social distances. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks
For obvious reasons there is not much news from the choir. However, the good news is that all of our choristers are fit and well. No practices have taken place and unfortunately we’ve had cancel our annual concert. Behind the scenes choristers have been active on Zoom and meet twice a week to have a chat. The committee is holding their monthly meeting on Zoom and is actively looking at all ways of getting the choir back singing. Advice is being sought from the Welsh Association of Male Choirs who is actively lobbying both the Senedd and MP’s with constituencies in Wales; in addition we have been in contact with Dr. Jamie Wallis and Carwyn Jones regarding our situation. The importance of the choir to its members cannot be underestimated. Apart from the camaraderie and social side of singing the mental health benefits to the choristers is huge. Learning songs in numerous languages, including English, Welsh, Italian, Latin and Afrikaans certainly keeps the brains active and healthy. The sooner we can safely resume practice and performance the better. We are also mindful of our loyal supporters who we are desperate to see again and send all our best wishes. It is a shame that in a year we’re celebrating our 40th Anniversary we cannot perform but we’ll be back. Ian Williams
A FILMMAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Because I am a filmmaker, I find it quite hard to watch a film without taking a ‘behind the camera’ view, looking at the lighting style and trying to work out what sort of camera was being used. It’s often something of a guessing game, but I find it a bit of fun and it doesn’t really get in the way of following what’s going on with the story. However, once in a while I find myself watching a film that is so absorbing that all secondary considerations, no matter how interesting, are overlooked. The other day I chanced upon a British thriller from 1960 called ‘Never Let Go’ and one of the main characters was played by Peter Sellers, most unusually in a villainous role. His nemesis turned out to be a meek little perfume salesman, played by Richard Todd, and he, too, seemed out of character. Adam Faith was in it as well, playing a young car thief, and although he was in the early stages of carving out a successful singing career, it is more than evident that he was also a very competent actor. You can find it on YouTube, it’s definitely worth viewing – and listen out for John Barry’s music. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir 42 | seaside news
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us, we usually meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR but our meetings are currently suspended due to the Corona virus situation so we’re now holding competitions etc. online instead. REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB
It has been nice to see Rest Bay SLSC back on the beach training after losing most of the beach season to COVID’19. The coaches and helpers at Rest Bay have worked very hard to make sure the training sessions can go ahead, following the recent guidelines of SLSA Wales and the Welsh Government. It has been great seeing all the club members and their families again, albeit in very strange times and under new rules. Rest Bay Juniors have been busy patrolling the beach after and before RNLI patrols. It has been great hearing the conversations between the juniors and the public, their knowledge and understanding of the dangers around and in the sea is fantastic. The training and hard work put in by these young adults is truly paying off. Well done Rest Bay! Melanie Taylor Nipper Coordinator 07792 107340

ANOTHER PATIENT AIRLIFTED FROM ISOLATED WELSH BEACH Volunteers kept busy, as another casualty evacuated from Kenfig Sands – an airlift hotspot. Kenfig Sands Surf Life Saving Club volunteers worked diligently on what was possibly the busiest day in the history of the club. Following a joint rescue effort on Sunday 9th August, another patient was airlifted from the remote stretch of coastline, known locally as Sker beach. At around 1:40PM, club volunteers were alerted to the incident by an off-duty surf lifesaver from a neighbouring beach. Volunteers were able to respond quickly to the injured horse rider who sustained a significant lower leg injury. Assistance was promptly requested from HM Coastguard Search and Rescue teams, to support extraction of the casualty and establish a suitable area for the helicopter to land. Similar incidents have occurred at almost the exact location, in both May and September of last year. The club volunteer throughout the summer but seem to be in the right place at the right time offering assistance to beach goers – only more recently at a responsible social distance. Senior club member, Lyle Bluck who orchestrated the initial stages of the rescue effort, is no stranger to evacuations from this beach: “This is the third airlift I’ve been involved with, from the same location in over 5 years”. Lyle is a veteran lifesaver, having recently received an award for 50 years of vigilance and service on this stretch of coastline. Due to the undulating terrain of the sand dunes the Wales Air Ambulance landed approximately 1.5 miles away in a field and with no road access, Welsh Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team could only respond on foot. The decision was made to request immediate evacuation due to the patient’s deteriorating condition and exposure to the sun. The HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter was deployed and swiftly landed. The injured horse rider was airlifted at approximately 4:40PM, escorted by a lifesaving club member who handed over to awaiting staff at Morriston A&E. “This was the club’s third, but most significant incident of the day and we wish the casualty a speedy recovery” said Club Captain James Marks. “You will find this level of dedication in our club, mirrored along the coastline in all Welsh Surf Lifesaving clubs”. The patient would like to thank the volunteers who made her more comfortable as she waited to be evacuated, especially volunteer HM Coastguard teams from Porthcawl and Port Talbot and the husband and wife duo from the surf lifesaving club, who’s marital teasing distracted her from the pain.
