CAT PROTECTION CHARITY

WELSH FLAG

Dear Editor, We are a great lover of pets in Porthcawl, so many of you will sympathise with the recent tragic loss of our precious cat Mickey, who was taken from us aged 13 yrs. Trying to focus on the great memories of him, rolling around our lounge as a kitten in the litter bin, climbing up our textured wallpaper and exploring our great big conifer tree thinking he was truly lost! Mickey lived through our five grandchildren, which has helped and taught them so much. Thirteen years ago we had chosen Mickey from the Cats Protection Charity at Bryncethin a truly remarkable place, we had got ourselves a very healthy cat, you may notice very few feral cats or litters of kittens in our neighbourhoods because of the work of this charity! On September 7th the Bridgend Adoption Centre celebrates its 25th Anniversary and are holding a grand party from 10.30am -3.30pm,we all benefit from the wonderful work they do, so why not pay a visit and celebrate with them! Christine Noyes, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I was talking recently to two visitors to Porthcawl, one from Mountain Ash and the other from Blackpool. They both said how beautiful the seafront was with its lovely flowerbeds and fine buildings and the main street with its hanging baskets of flowers, great variety of shops and friendly people made it a very attractive town. However they both emphasised that the town lacked a Welsh flavour to impress the several coach loads of English visitors that come into Porthcawl each week to stay at the Seabank. We want now to make every effort to remedy the situation. Some years ago I visited Treorchy and was immediately impressed with the number of Welsh flags displayed along the main street. It gave a portrait of a town of warmth, pride and one with a very strong Welsh flavour. To complete the picture some of the staff in the shops and cafes were dressed in Welsh costumes. To create a Welsh flavour in Porthcawl we could start with just five Welsh flags. Two placed in John Street on the police station and museum, two on the seafront on the Pavilion and new information building and one in Mary Street on the council offices. We are gifted with a Welsh name - Porthcawl translated by one of my Welsh speaking friends as ‘port’ port or gate and ‘cawl’ as soup. I presume that Porthcawl means a port with rough seas. We are blessed with a majestic Welsh national flag and yet Porthcawl being one of the major seaside resorts of Wales does not display even one Welsh flag in the town centre which is incredible. How we portray Porthcawl is in our hands. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

Your views PORTHCAWL SEA DEFENCES Dear Editor, My wife and I have watched the construction of the stepped sea defences on Porthcawl town beach. The work was fascinating and the completed works look fine compared to what was there before. Some residents have commented on the accumulation of algae on the steps and expressed their concerns that this growth presents certain hazards. We ourselves have very little knowledge of the danger posed by the algae but last week we ventured down to the steps for the first time to have a closer look at the steps .I noticed that chunks of concrete have already been broken off along the right and left angled sections of the construction. Our family has lived in and around Porthcawl since 1964 and we are in no doubt about the power of the sea and the particularly strong tidal forces that have shaped our great coastline. Some damage is inevitable, but I am concerned that if the concrete type is not appropriate or possibly incorrectly mixed, then erosion could be rapid. There may be other explanations. I have asked Bridgend Council to investigate. Bob Owen, North Cornelly

THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE

Dear Editor, After reading the article in the Seaside News last month regarding the plastic challenge, it got me thinking about a recent trip to Devon. A local business commissioned an artist to design a large metal fish to encourage the general public to place their plastic waste in it, which when full would be weighed, recycled and figures published. What a fantastic and fun idea to educate the younger generation to recycle plastic, and prevent it getting into the ocean. With all the comments from residents regarding plastic litter on the beaches wouldn’t this be a brilliant feature as part of the exciting regeneration of the harbour area. I feel that possibly there could be a local business or businesses that could sponsor an up and coming artist from the area to provide a similar feature. Maybe A’ Level students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School or even the Art Department of Bridgend College could get involved. Hopefully my fellow Seaweeds will rise to the challenge and we can look forward to seeing our very own plastic muncher. Richard Torkington, Porthcawl

Book of the Month ‘One Good Deed’ by David Baldacci In 1949, Aloysius Archer arrives in the dusty Southern town of Poca City. He has nothing but a handful of dollars, the clothes he’s wearing and an appointment with his new parole officer. After his wartime experiences in Italy and a prison sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, Archer is looking for a fresh start and a peaceful life. On his first night of freedom, Archer meets local business tycoon Hank Pittleman, who promises Archer handsome compensation to work as his debt collector. Yet Archer takes on more than he bargains for, as he becomes embroiled in a long-running feud between the drought-struck town’s most dangerous residents. When one of them dies, the authorities label Archer as their number one suspect. A bloody game is being played above and below the law. Everybody playing has a deeply buried secret, and Archer must uncover them all – if he’s to avoid going back behind bars. 16 | seaside news

Local history PORTHCAWL LIONS AND PORTHCAWL MUSEUM

Recently, Porthcawl Lions presented a cheque for £1000 to Porthcawl Museum. The cheque was formally handed to Paul Joseph, chairman of Porthcawl Museum & Historical Society by the President of Porthcawl Lions, Joan Cosson. The donation will enable the museum to create a peace garden to an area at the rear of the museum building, which had originally been the prisoner exercise yard. At the moment this yard is the location for museums original Anderson shelter, which will be moved to a new permanent site at the rear of the museum where it will form part of some exciting new exhibitions and displays currently being planned. The bulk of the Lions donation will enable the museum to purchase a garden tool shed which will be transformed into a new exhibition space depicting a typical garden shed and workshop from the Victorian era complete with tools and implements from that period, the museum will be helped in this process by the Porthcawl branch of Tools For Self-Reliance, they are part of a UK-wide volunteer group that collect old and unwanted hand tools then clean, repair and sharpen them, before sending them to community groups in several African countries. Thanking the lions for the donation Paul Joseph said, “The museum and the lions have a strong relationship and in fact many of the lions are also active volunteers at the museum, this is a reciprocal relationship, which benefits both organisations”. Joan Cosson commented, “The museum is now seen as an important asset of the town and the Lions were pleased that this donation would help in its continued growth”. David Swidenbank

SEPTEMBER 1939

This month marks the 80th Anniversary of the outbreak of WW2. The month before the population of the town had been estimated at 9000, of which some were concerned over the complaint of drunkenness and bad language emanating from dances at the Pavilion. Most, however, were preparing for the Annual Carnival, deliberating on the possibility of a Lady Godiva gracing the procession. Pines Airways, situated near the Rest Home, was enjoying success with Amy Johnson and her husband Jim Mollinson visiting the airfield; and 3,500 passengers were carried in the ‘Fox Moth,’ during the last week of August. The mood soon changed with the onset of war. Concern now, was directed at the lack of air-raid shelters and the volume of the air-raid siren. Unless the wind was in the right direction residents in Newton and Nottage did not hear it. ARP Wardens, based at the Pavilion, were trained to deal with the effects of gas attacks and enforced the blackout despite any evidence of enemy aircraft. This state of affairs known as the ‘Phoney War,’ would last until 10th May 1940. Tragically though Porthcawl would suffer its first casualty when on 30th September, whilst engaging 15 Nazi machines, Aircraftsman Donald Leighton Thomas, Suffolk Place, went down over German lines. BRIDGEND HISTORY SOCIETY The Bridgend and District Local History Society held a very enjoyable members’ dinner earlier in the summer and we followed this with a trip to Insole Court in Cardiff where the Friends of Insole Court have done a splendid job in maintain and restoring this fascinating house dating back to the mid-Victorian era. Its history stretches back to the Insole family of coal owners who built a modest house and then extended over the years into the splendid mansion, which stands now. It was taken over by Cardiff Council in the 1930s for a road scheme and has had many varied roles including an ARP HQ during WW2; a base for the traffic police and a library. It was saved for the community by the diligent actions of local residents and is run today as a charity. The next meeting of the Society is in Carnegie House, Bridgend at 7pm on September 11th when Rowena Williams and Ian Price will be talking on ‘Jewish Immigration in South Wales.’ This kicks off a strong programme of monthly lectures through to April 2020. Membership is £7 for the year and non-members are welcome at individual sessions at a cost of £2.

EXPERT INDIVIDUAL TUITION IN PORTHCAWL Expert Individual Tuition for GCSE and KS3 in the Porthcawl and Bridgend Area • 100% Success Rate • Many Years Experience • Proven Track Record • Commendations From Past Pupils • Enquires Welcome. Tel: 07711242560. A SUCCESSFUL education is key to a successful life. A good education with sound qualifications opens doors to career paths and opportunities others without qualifications can only dream of. That’s why it’s so important for parents to ensure their children get the right education, especially in the Key Subjects of English and Mathematics. Most schools have large classes and high pupil teacher ratios, and even with the best of intentions, pupils’ individual needs are often overlooked. Each of us learns differently, and at a different pace, and it is sometimes impossible for teachers of large classes to ensure that every child’s particular needs are met. This is where tuition can help. A tutor can quickly assess your child’s particular needs and tailor an individual education plan to suit each pupil. Tutors can spot an individual’s strengths and talents, and foster them, and can also identify particular needs that are often missed in larger classrooms, and sometimes remain unaddressed. So don’t leave your child’s education to chance. Top Tuition offers specialist tuition in the key subjects of English and Mathematics by highly-qualified experienced teachers and experienced GCSE examiners. We have a proven track record with many years experience, and a 100% success rate at GCSE. Our many positive testimonials off successful former pupils confirm our commitment to the highest of standards. What more could you wish for your child? We are here to help, whether it’s preparing your child for their GCSE Exams, or whether they need help to guide them through GCSE re-sits. We are proud that our many commendations off our former successful re-sit pupils confirm that they always achieve the grades they aim for. For advice regarding your child’s education, or to book a course of lessons in English or Mathematics, contact us at Top Tuition. We Are Here To Help. It was a busy end to the term with the curtain coming down on the BTEC students’ annual show, ‘Ghost’ which was performed for 3 nights in our Jubilee Theatre to delighted parents and students. It was immediately followed by our annual Young Playwright’s Festival in which pupils are encouraged to write, produce, direct and perform in plays which they then showcase to parents over 2 nights in the Jubilee Theatre – the standard was superb again this year! Thanks to everyone who took part. Many congratulations to our ‘Code Club’ who attended the SCS South Wales final at Nantgarw College on 1st July, having won the regional qualifying competition. The challenge was to create an innovation using a BBC Micro:bit to promote healthy living – in just 90 minutes! We are delighted that our group’s fitness product was awarded second place, winning £100 towards coding equipment for school. Well done to Mr Pucella and everyone involved including Joseph Matthews, Joel Griffiths, Gethin Davies, Enzo Lipley and Rhys Cryer. Year 7 took part in a very exciting Crime Scene Investigation project at the end of term whilst Year 8 were busy with Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s version of The Apprentice, planning and developing a new product and developing a marketing strategy to sell it. We certainly have some budding investigators and entrepreneurs amongst our ranks! I hope that all our pupils enjoyed a relaxing long summer holiday and will return to school refreshed for a busy term ahead. Welcome to our new Year 7’s and Sixth Formers who have joined us for the first time – incredibly Transition for entry for September 2020 has started already, with our Open Evening for Year 6 pupils taking place on Wednesday 2nd October. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

This year 114 students sat an amazing 446 qualifications. The most remarkable fact is the excellent quality of the A Level results; the pass rate (A* to E) was a fantastic 97.2%, with 25.5% A/A*. This outstanding performance underlines Porthcawl as a truly inclusive school. We are delighted that students have reached, and in most cases exceeded, their potential. Students at AS and A2 have had their endeavour rewarded with excellent results. There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for parents who have supported their sons and daughters. Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home. There were several standout performers who have done exceptionally well. The following students have achieved 3 A’s or better: Anna Biju, Beth Burke, Emily Childs, Charlotte Coleman, Steffan Davies, Marcus Fish, Emily Jones, Rhys Leary, Ellie McCloy, Megan Morris, Catherine Pickett, Lauren Slaughter, Maya Squires and Maja Zeleska. An interesting feature of this year’s entry is the number of students who applied for and have been accepted to read Medicine at university. It is most unusual for a school to have 7 successful applications; we wish them all the very best in their future studies. Head Teacher Mr Slade commented that this excellent series of results would ensure Porthcawl students have secured places at some of the best universities in the country. Mr Slade continued to congratulate staff and students who were praised for their hard work and steadfast dedication. Mr. Slade concluded that the results were especially impressive given the large size of the entry, with almost a thousand papers being sat at A Level. The following departments did particularly well with A* to C above 70%: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths, 26 | seaside news

St Clare’s celebrated another year of excellent A-Level results that trumped the national picture, with 40% of grades at A*/A, 65% at A*/B and 89% of grades at A*/C. 21% of students achieved AAB or higher in at least two facilitating subjects. Straight A students were Tim Pottage, Sam Chumley, Grace Parker and Sherif Hassn who have confirmed places at top universities. Tim achieved A* in Maths, A* in Further Maths and A in Physics and will read Engineering Science at Oxford University. Head Boy, Sam, achieved A* in Biology, and A in Chemistry and Maths and will read Medicine at Cardiff University. Sherif achieved A in Maths, Physics and Chemistry and will read Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering at Leeds University. Grace achieved A* in Graphics and A in History and English Literature, and will read English Literature at Exeter. We are immensely proud of our students’ achievements and it is a pleasure to celebrate with them after all their hard work. We are delighted the majority of students secured places at their first-choice universities, to read competitive subjects such as Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy and Accounting. We wish them every success in their continued studies and future careers. We also take part in the various competitions in which teams and individuals can participate – However no child is forced to compete. The children also work towards various national surf safety awards, which include both sports and lifesaving elements.

Now recruiting 2012 Boys and Girls

Rest Bay Nippers are now recruiting boys and girls born 2007-2011. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have loads of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.

Have fun, learn lifesaving skills and build friendships for life. If you would like more information please contact: Nipper coordinator: Melanie Taylor - 07792 107340 28 | seaside news

Local news SCHOOL TRANSPORT CONSULTATION A consultation is underway about school transport. BCBC is considering introducing some drastic changes which could see many pupils stripped of their school buses. Among the proposals is one that would remove free school transport from all sixth form and post 16 students. There are grave implications here for youngsters attending Bridgend College who will lose their free bus pass and those at the borough’s only Welsh medium comprehensive school at Llangynwyd and at Archbishop McGrath RC comprehensive. Until now, sixth formers have been able to get on a bus as long as they live more than three miles from the school. But if the changes come into force, parents will either have to pay for their kids to go on using the bus or arrange their own transport. A worrying scenario is that many parents may decide to transfer their children into their nearest comprehensive to continue their sixth form studies which will totally undermine the principle of both Welsh-medium and faith-based education. I urge all parents to look at the proposals and respond to the consultation as many pupils are also set to lose their buses if the council deems that a safe walking route is available. RNLI FLOOD RESCUE TEAM OFFER ASSISTANCE AT WHALEY BRIDGE Volunteers from the RNLI’s Flood Rescue teams have been working as part of the multi-agency response to the ongoing situation at Toddbrook Reservoir. Paul Eastment, Area Lifesaving Manager for the RNLI, who lives in Porthcawl, is a team leader at the incident. Paul served as a volunteer lifeboat crew at Porthcawl for many years before joining the RNLI staff on a full time basis. Paul along with Porthcawl volunteer crewman Chris Missen was awarded the Bronze Medal for Gallantry following their part in a perilous flood rescue in 2012. The RNLI’s team that is made up of specially trained volunteers, including lifeboat crew and operational staff are all trained in swift water rescue. Volunteers from the south Wales, the east coast and from north and southwest were deployed at around 10.30am on Sunday morning (4 August) requested to support Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service. RNLI Flood Rescue Command Member Terry Webb says: ‘The RNLI is part of a multi-agency response offering assistance at Toddbrook Reservoir. We have two teams of trained volunteers working on a shift pattern 24/7. ‘Our teams have been providing support to the high volume pumping teams and providing safety cover as part of the response plan.’ 30 | seaside news

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP FOR LOCAL PEOPLE Whether it’s a social enterprise such as HALO Leisure and Awen Cultural Trust or a local group taking on local facilities as part of a community asset transfer, Bridgend County Borough Council has a track record of working in partnership alongside a wide range of different organisations. The latest is a new Porthcawl surf group, which has joined the wave of local clubs, which are creating opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy sport. As a social enterprise, Karma Seas provide inclusive weekly sessions for people of all ages and abilities. They are already working to achieve the Insport Ribbon Standard from Disability Sport Wales, which recognises efforts and a commitment towards providing inclusive opportunities. I know that the Karma Seas club is seeking donations of good condition wetsuits, foamies, body-boards and other similar equipment, so if you think you can help, why not give them a call on 07919 133855? The council is keen to hear from other people from local sports clubs that would like to find out more about ways in which they can become more inclusive for people with disabilities. To find out more, contact our Disability Sport Wales Development Officer on 07970 268322 or email chris.foot@ bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

KENFIG IN THE NEWS AGAIN Kenfig National Nature Reserve was back in the news recently when record numbers of orchids were found to be flourishing there. The reserve features as many as 15 different species including Twayblades, Autumn Lady’s Tresses, Bee Orchids and more. It is also home to the UK’s entire population of the Fen Orchid a unique flower that only grows at Kenfig. In 2015, there were fears for the future of the Fen Orchid after numbers dropped to fewer than 200. But thanks to a special landscape management scheme, which involves scraping the surface of dune slacks to encourage and stimulate growth, the Fen Orchids have now increased to more than 1,000. It is fantastic to see the reserve doing so well, especially as the council is preparing to hand management of the site back to its owners, the Kenfig Corporation Trust. We have been working towards a management handover for almost a full decade now, and together with Natural Resources Wales, we are supporting the trust as they seek to appoint a new organisation that can continue this work. I’m looking forward to learning who the new managers will be, and seeing how they will help the reserve to thrive even further. HELP US TO SET OUR TOUGHEST BUDGET YET Our annual budget consultation will begin on 9 September, and I cannot underestimate the starkness of the situation. After almost 10 years of national austerity and reduced funding for councils, we have managed to protect people from the very worst of the cuts. But we now find ourselves forced to consider proposals such as removing CCTV coverage, closing down a household recycling centre, stopping pest control services, ceasing adult learning classes and more. While a reluctant council tax increase is part of this, that won’t even cover what we will have to spend on schools next year. Providing services for 142,000 people in 2019-20 will cost £270.8m, and we estimate that there will be a shortfall in this of £7.6m. We’ve already saved £27m in the last four years through things like slashing senior management, reducing council staff numbers by 400 and cutting some popular services. Until central Government decides to provide local government with adequate funding, we will have to keep making some of the hardest decisions that we have ever faced in order to set a balanced budget, which meets our legal responsibilities. Please help us to shape Bridgend’s future by visiting www.bridgend. gov.uk/consultation, picking up a copy from libraries, or emailing consultation@bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

GREEN FIELDS HELP US ALL In July I watched as thousands of the inaugural Porthcawl 10k runners passed the finishing line on the Promenade, the culmination of countless hours of training in open spaces across Bridgend and beyond. The weather was superb and I look back on it as one of the highlights of the summer. It made me consider where many of these runners started out. The availability of green spaces for events, such as park runs and other fitness activities, feeds into events like this year’s 10K. In this way green spaces contribute to the local economy, as well as bringing health benefits for the population. Research from charity Fields in Trust Cymru, as part of its Green Space Index, shows that parks and green spaces provide regular users in Wales with £1.6 billion of physical health and mental wellbeing benefits each year. Fields in Trust protects green spaces from development by working with landowners, local authorities and voluntary organisations, and there are seven of these areas in built up areas of the Bridgend constituency. I have written about grand wild spaces such as Kenfig Nature Reserve and Merthyr Mawr Warren, but these more modest spots need preservation and protection too. MAYORS UPDATE In recent weeks the undoubted highlights of a busy schedule have been the inaugural Healthspan 10k run and the Porthcawl Carnival. Both events enjoyed wonderful weather and brought many locals and visitors to our town – showcasing all that we have to offer. I would like to thank the organisers of both events for their excellent attention to detail and sheer endeavour. Neither event could have gone ahead without the support of our emergency services, and not forgetting the hard work done by those clearing up afterwards – thank you all. I attended an Art exhibition at St Clares school recently; the high quality of work on show by all students was truly inspiring; the work of Miles Olding and Tarian Martinez especially. Finally, it was a pleasure to welcome visitors from St Sebastien sur Loire just last week to celebrate 20 years of first forming the twinning charter between our two towns. QUEEN OF OUR GARDEN

A SPRING IN MY STEP

We have a secret garden, and those who know it’s there Will slip away for a friendly chat, or a quiet time of prayer. Our garden’s loved and cared for, welllawned with cherished bloom But the queen of our special garden is this tree of sweet perfume. How come it has stood so tall and proud, strong branches spreading shade While birds find rest and build a nest in this refuge it has made. Was it some bird flew overhead who dropped, by chance a seed Or did one plant it carefully to meet a special need? Our tree, you fanned us gracefully and shaded us with care How sun-baked would our garden be were you not our guardian there? But they tell us that our queen is doomed, dead on the inside They’ve lopped off all her branches. Gaunt and bare, deprived of pride. But see! It sends a message, for from every gash and wound Is a clustering of bright new growth, as if to chase away our gloom Don’t think of death, I’m living yet, is what she seems to say Or give up too soon, embracing gloom, but thank God for each new day. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

A spring in my step Walk down the valley with no fear Abides his servants instead Rejoices the newborn. Tomorrow is a new day So the shadows skulk Further down the pit they go Awaits their hefty fate. Towards the doors Alas my left and right Board or narrow lays the path I shall keep a spring in my step. Lara J Fuller

SEASIDE TOWN A seaside town worth looking around Lots of B&B`S hotels by the sea Get a nice tasty snack At the glass covered cafe A fairground ride Events at the high tide There’s plenty to choose Spot Elvis wearing his blue suede shoes With no time to lose I head to the beach its just within reach Grains of sand now slip through my hands Sunsets galore I walk to the shore Candyfloss sweet Tide ebbs at my feet Oh what a treat Gulls call The place is Porthcawl Jan Thomas, Sarn

A LIFE ONCE LIVED We’re born to live, and achieve great things – We’re born to live a life, And some find living so hard to do But deal with it they must. Offers of help are there for those – Who find the path too tough, A guiding hand, a spoken word – With a smile to gladden the heart. The path can be a dangerous place – For those who lose their way, Too many obstacles line the route – And the light is never bright. Days of light soon turn to grey, Then black, and blackest still – And memories of happier days Have vanished in a flash. I held your hand, such warmth was felt As your spirit lingered still, Then you heard a voice, “it’s time to go” – And you breathed your very last. The sun shines golden upon you now – No dark days full of gloom, For where you walk is full of joy – Hand in hand with those you’ve loved. Rhian Edwards, Porthcawl

MY ANGEL WATCHING OVER ME My Angel watching over me, I need your help right now, I’m floundering on the sea of life, Don’t know what to do or how. My Angel watching over me, I need you to guide my feet, I can’t see where I’m walking, My heart is struggling to beat. My Angel watching over me, Please help me in my quest, My days are hard, my nights are cold, and I really need to rest… My Angel thank you for listening, I know you’ve heard my plea, I feel calm as I sit in wait for you, Your magic’s started, and now I can see. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

I AM NOT I am not a woman nor a man I am not black nor white I am not yellow nor red I am not Christian nor Jew I am not Muslim nor Sikh I am not Hindu nor Buddhist You cannot define what I am. I have my sexuality I have my race I have my beliefs If, when you judge me Think not of my sexuality, my colour, my beliefs Judge me as I am Naked of all your prejudices M. Price, Porthcawl

SEASONS RHONDDA BLUES There he sits upon the rock Overlooking Cwmparc, Trying to forget the good And the bad, All the while her face Attacks his mind And heart. With the trees behind him, The lake below him And the village opposite him, He knows where she lives But there he... Remains. Steven T Richards

As summer turns to autumn And leaves turn red and gold The sun becomes more misty And nights become more cold. Birds begin to fly away To find the warmer weather Squirrels, Dormice and the like Curl up in nests of feather. Soon frost will cover fields and trees The grass turns white with cold As winter follows autumn Leaves fall that once were gold. Gaynor Evans, Kenfig Hill

LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS

Kobe is a handsome four-year-old Doberman who is looking for an active home where he will be kept both mentally and physically stimulated. He is very affectionate with people and loves to play, and after a good run in the field, he will settle and have a nap. He will require further work on his social skills with other dogs as he doesn’t quite understand how to play, so currently he is best suited as the only dog in the home. Kobe can be left for a few hours and he is house trained. He can live with children 14 years and above. Home from Home Co-Ordinator Mandy says, “Kobe is a bright boy and is always excited to see you. He still acts very young and will even try and sit on your lap.” For more information on Kobe, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey all, these last few months I’ve been praying a very exciting prayer that God led me too. And I feel it’s really enriching my life. I’d like to encourage you to pray this too. It’s found in 1 Chronicles 4 v 10. Jabez cried out to God and asked for God to bless him. And that’s just the start. Jabez crying out simply means he wanted God’s blessing on his life more than anything. That has to be the first step. To have God’s blessing means to have God’s supernatural favour in your life where the supernatural power of God is released into your life. When that power is released it starts to set you free from addictions and the like. It starts to elevate your life to a higher level. It starts to make things in life work a lot better. Obviously, all this first comes out of wanting God in your life and wanting to know him and know his presence and power. The great news is your life-change is a prayer away. Why don’t you ask God for his blessing? To be continued... Neil Harvey

Success of the month was the Vintage Fayre with 200 classic cars, lots of stalls, refreshments and entertainment (Tenovus Choir, Bridgend ukulele group) etc at the Rugby Club. Also there are the weekly car boot sales which, with a run of sunny Sundays, have really taken off this year, and meanwhile the sandcastle competition on Trecco Beach saw some quality entries judged by Mayor Graham Walters). Our funds go to (chiefly local) charities like the Food Bank, KPCY, Sandville and holidays for carers and most recently Porthcawl Museum for its new peace garden. On September 14th our summer programme will end with the visit of lots of splendid Honda Goldwing motorcycles, going on display and giving a headlight evening parade around town. Look out for it and stop saying nothing ever happens - there’s been so much this summer1 Interested to join us and lower our age range? CHECK WEBSITE - or ring Jim on 859505

Club features TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa

We were pleased last month to participate in the Lyons Classic Car Show at the Porthcawl Rugby Club. Up went our marquee, out came the tables, we unloaded our trailer and were descended upon by many enthusiasts who wanted bargains. Good old tools which we do not send to Africa. We are pleased to help in this way and many go away with treasure “Just what I’ve always needed!” Talk about Treasure and Junk! Often people give us stuff we don’t want, having just dragged a big box from under the garage bench: in-side, rusty junk, nails, broken fittings, plastic, spiders, dead mice and centuries of debris and dust. Generally we do not want hardwear, so please do sort out what you are able to give, any tools connected to any trade whether Electrical, industrial, or D.I.Y. They do not need to be cleaned, but do need to be complete. This would help us immensely. We can pick up if really required providing everything is pre-sorted. This month we have sent 3 Carpentry Kits, 2 auto mechanics kits, a building kit, plumbing kit and much haberdashery. These destined for Uganda. Our Workshop opens again on September 10th, and if you are interested in volunteering, please ring 0165 786367. John Hanson (Group co-coordinator)

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I’m always a little surprised to find that the Jesus we meet in the Bible is often not the same as the Jesus we often hear about in the hymns we sing. For instance, in Mark 11:20-25 Jesus curses a fig tree and makes it wither because he was hungry and the fig tree didn’t have any figs on it. Not exactly a very good pastoral example to set for the disciples. He doesn’t do this kind of thing often, but the scripture does show the human side of Jesus, and as a human being he wasn’t always in a good mood, and he sometimes let it show. One of the expectations people have of ministers is for them to be not only ultra-good, but also super-nice and pastoral all the time. But not even Jesus could manage that. And I wonder: is that what we really want in our leaders, whether they are spiritual or secular leaders? Let’s give our leaders a break and let them have actual human personalities, just like the rest of us – and just like Jesus. God Bless Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

PORTHCAWL PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATORS It’s just over a year since Porthcawl Community First Responders completed the first installation of their 24/7 Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) programme where potentially lifesaving defibrillators are deployed in and around Porthcawl to be used by members of the local community in the case of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. With the amazing support from the people and organisations of Porthcawl, whether via financial support, sharing equipment or helping with the physical installation, they have successfully deployed eight PAD’s throughout the Porthcawl area. In addition, they are hoping to complete a further three installation over the coming weeks with yet more to following in the future. Club features HARBOUR QUARTER PORTHCAWL

Sailing and yachting enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that Harbour Quarter Porthcawl have been working hard to further add to the services at the Marina, as our boat crane is now fully functional, and enables owners to have boats launched or removed from the water quickly and easily. We’ve developed a secure dry storage yard for both short and long-term lets, with maintenance area, transportation from the harbour, and mobile washdown facility – which can even be brought to the harbourside to clean in situ. With all this going on, and the much-anticipated Harbourside building due to start construction soon, Porthcawl Marina could well be the place to watch! NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL July was another busy month for us, with 14 logged and 29 monitored incidents. This matches the number of incidents recorded in July 2018, but monitored incidents have increased by 9 from this time last year. Our incidents ranged from missing persons, to overdue swimmers and from “tombstoners” to dinghies adrift. This means July 2019 was our busiest month since the station opened. July was also a record month for logged vessels, with 1787 recorded movements. Interestingly, 85% of these were related to leisure. At the time of writing this report, we have recorded 57 incidents for the year - 10 more than this time in 2018. This makes us one of the busiest National Coastwatch stations in the UK. Our innovative and state of the art CCTV system helps us achieve this, with an unparalleled level of coverage over the local coastline. Rarely do we have quiet watches during the summer! We thank everyone who continues to support us and especially for the excellent response to our stand at Rescue Fest 2019. Our tower is 149 years old this year and we hope to celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary next year in appropriate fashion. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT For the past few years, the Talbot has presented a Fashion Show, with the help of a group of female members taking part as the models. This year is no exception. On Tuesday, 29th October, we will be putting on another show, again hosted by Klass, The Pines, Bridgend. With the Christmas season not far away, we will add a bit of sparkle to our evening wear, plus ideas of what to buy for lunch with the girls, or dinner with the hubby’s Christmas party. Tickets will be on sale from 1st September, priced £5, doors open 6.15 pm and light refreshments will be available. Local people are still joining the Talbot, to show their support. But you don’t have to be a member to play bingo; you can pay 50p extra instead. Likewise, non-members can have lunch, again for an extra 50p. A recent menu included Curry, rice and chips followed by pineapple upside down sponge with custard, plus tea or coffee, all served to your table, with jugs of water available on the table (£5.00). For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

TRINITY CHURCH During the summer we have had essential repairs to our church roof so some activities have been cancelled. However we are holding our usual Services. The Messy Church session for August was cancelled but the July event was very enjoyable. There was a carnival/party theme followed by a children’s disco. The team also organised some activities for Trinity’s week at St Mary’s in Trecco Bay from 5th August. The next Messy Church is on Sunday 15th September from 3-5pm. All children under 10 are welcome. The activities include painting, arts &crafts, games, stories, songs and a meal. This is a free activity which runs monthly. We are holding our Harvest Service and lunch on September 21st and a special Elvis Service during the festival on September 29th. Rev Wyn Roberts will be conducting and singing at the service. The July GAP event was an invigorating walk on Newton Dunes followed by a meal and quiz at the Jolly Sailor pub. A Summer BBQ has been planned for August. Tools for Self Reliance is an organisation which is affiliated in partnership with Trinity. They are meeting again on September 10th but have been busy over the summer arranging a shipment of tools to Uganda. If you have any tools to donate, please contact them or Trinity. Full details of all our events and services are on our website and Facebook page. This includes details of future GAP activities, regular meetings and any Trinity Outings. We are delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. There is a chance to chat after the service when coffee is served. Alison Meredith Thomas. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My wife and I are going through Divorce proceedings and have been unable to agree a financial settlement. We have exhausted mediation and I have been advised to go to Court. What will happen next if I do? Answer:During Divorce proceedings, the Court has the power to make various orders for financial relief. It is hoped that parties can agree a division of assets without the formal intervention of the Court. If this is not possible, one of the parties can file an application for a financial order with the Court. If you decide to go ahead, you will have to file an application called a Form A and pay a court fee of £255 to issue. Both you and your wife will then each complete a document called a Form E which will set out your respective financial positions. These are exchanged. Once you have exchanged all of your financial disclosure, there is nothing to preclude you from negotiating. If matters cannot be agreed at the First Directions Hearing, the Judge will list your application for a second hearing known as a Financial Dispute Resolution Hearing at which the Judge having listened to the arguments put forward by the legal advisors can give an indication as to how he/she believes the case should settle. The Judge will not give any judgments at this hearing and the vast majority of cases do settle at this stage. However, if this is not possible, the Court will list your case for a final hearing where both parties will give oral evidence of their positions. The District Judge will then make a decision which is binding upon both parties. The proceedings can go on for up to 6-9 months and you could spend, worst case scenario, up to £20k plus VAT. WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME DIES If a family member has died but you cannot find a will, you should make sure you have checked thoroughly: • Search the house and any paperwork. • Contact any solicitors or other professional advisers you know they used. • Consider searching the National Will Register, which may provide a record if a solicitor holds her will. • Ask their bank in case they have the will. • Consider searching at the Probate Registry in case they have the will in safe-keeping. • Ask any other family or friends who you think might know. If you still can’t find a Will, you may need to assume that it doesn’t exist and that person died ‘intestate’. If so, you can apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ or ask your solicitor to do this on your behalf. If you do locate a Will, you will need to ascertain who are appointed as the executors, this gives them authority to deal with the estate by collecting in all assets, applying for Grant of Probate, selling or transferring Property/Land and distributing the assets in accordance with the Will. It will also be the executors who notify the beneficiaries of their entitlement to the estate. The Will may specifically detail who is entitled to what personal items (Jewellery, Panting etc) however often it may say ‘All personal chattels to be distributed between my children equally.’ Or it may be silent on this issue altogether and this is when problems normally arise particularly if these have sentimental value. It can help to have everything valued (some items may already have been valued as part of the process of working out any inheritance tax payable). After all, there is little point arguing over who gets something if it isn’t worth more to you than it could be sold for. You might then be able to work out a system for sharing the other items out. For example, you might take it in turns to each pick something you want or you could ‘auction’ the items among yourselves, with the winning bidder for each item agreeing to accept a proportionately smaller share of any cash. Once agreement has been reached, then the remaining estate can be distributed in accordance with the Will once the monies and assets have been called in, and debts from the estate paid. THE ROLE OF A SOLICITOR WHEN YOU ARE SEPARATING FROM YOUR PARTNER People are often concerned at the cost of getting a solicitor involved in their case and think that by doing so they will complicate matters. It is important to take legal advice at an early stage after you separate from your partner. Despite what some people think, a good family lawyer will not try to turn an amicable split into an acrimonious one. Being well informed of your rights, responsibilities and the likely outcomes gives you the best information to help keep things from turning sour. It is best to take advice before entering into negotiations with your ex-partner. You may find you agree something that you’re happy with at the time, but if circumstances change you might not feel as happy later. A lawyer will help you consider the implications of different scenarios and may also suggest options you haven’t thought of, for example trying to resolve your difficulties via mediation. It can be very difficult to maintain a good relationship with an ex-partner if you are trying to backtrack from an agreement that you reached without legal advice. It is much better to know where you stand before you start those negotiations. Lawyers do not just help couples who are unable to reach an agreement. Sometimes clients do agree on the way forward, and they simply want lawyers to formalise that agreement or assist them with making an application for a clean break order – a binding order preventing either party from coming back for more money later on. It is important to remember that simply reaching an agreement about what will happen does not mean that you are protected in the future from a claim if your ex-partner changes their mind. However, if a lawyer draws up this agreement, you will have the best possible protection against a future claim. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

It has been another busy few months for our WI. In June we all gained a deeper understanding of our local history following a talk ‘The Normans in Wales’ by Ceri Joseph. Our trip to Sudeley castle in the Cotswolds in late June was very interesting and enjoyable (helped by the glorious weather). In July Graeme Wilson from Slade Farm talked to us about organic farming. The produce he brought illustrated the quality of the vegetables grown and the animals reared on the farm. In August Jane provided our Summer Meal. The food, as always, was excellent and it was good to see so many of our members attending. We look forward to our future talks, September – the author Mary McClarey, October – John Sheen and, in November, ‘DNA and Crime’ with Rhian Morgan. We are also planning our celebrations for next year’s 90th anniversary. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm in Ewenny Community Village Hall with members from Bridgend and the Vale. If you would like to come and join us or simply to visit please contact at methyrmawrwi@gmail.com or simply call in. You will be made very welcome. E Connick

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL I hope you all had a lovely August. I suspect you gave your macs a good outing. We at Inner Wheel will be starting up our meetings again in September, after the August break. Elizabeth Jones held a very successful summer tea in her home. The charity that she sponsored was SEED. Sustainable Environmental and Educational Development. Huw and Judy Moats son Steven Moatt undertook a sponsored cycle ride from Bamff in Canada, to the Mexican border - a total of 2,731 miles in 22days, to raise money for this little known very worthy charity. Huw came along and explained what SEED was doing in Madagascar. This island is very poor and gets little attention. The talented members of our group have started a quilting group. They have already made throws and cushions. One of our lucky members won one of the lovely cushions, in our raffle. The possibility of starting a crochet group, for beginners and the experienced, has been discussed, while carrying on with our knitting projects. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd of September where we will enjoy a meal and find out what outings and activities have been proposed. Suzanne Jefferies Correspondent

Business & finance REDUCTION IN INTEREST RATES? This time last year I was writing about interest rates increasing from 0.5% to 0.75%. Here we are 12 months down the track and there’s talk of actually reducing rates back to 0.5% once more. This has been brought about seemingly by the uncertainty in the country about Brexit, the future of Government and the drop in consumer sales on the high street, as well as other factors. On another note, again 12 months on, there has just been a comparison report showing that the bank of Mum and Dad and Grandma, are continuing to fund deposits for young people to get on the property ladder more than ever before. Interestingly, one large brokerage actually calculated that if parents or Grandparents released equity in their property, thus allowing the young new purchaser to have a much lower mortgage at a cheaper interest rate, the cost of the total borrowing involved could be LESS, which would make absolute sense. Many Grandparents and parents are taking the view that the money is needed now for a deposit, not as an inheritance at some later time. Call us for a confidential chat about this if this interests you. Now then, at the time of writing, the deals of some £90.2 BILLION worth of residential mortgages and £8.3 BILLION of Buy to Let mortgages, will have reached their end dates between June and by the end of October this year. Are YOU one of those people who need to seek a new mortgage deal before then – just two months away? If so, you should be looking NOW and we are already getting calls from the public seeking new deals, where interest rates can be much lower than those applying originally to the mortgage. If you do nothing, the lender will move you onto the Standard Variable Rate (SVR) and this will in many cases, cost you more per month. A call to us could save you hundreds of pounds, possibly much more. Finally, for those of you who have insufficient life assurance or are looking for a better deal than you have, we can supply you with quotes from all major insurers, the household names you are familiar with. We regularly save people money or get better cover for the same premium. For this or a chat about any of the issues discussed here, please call 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 and we’ll be pleased to assist.

HAVE LIFETIME MORTGAGES REALLY CHANGED? The introduction of the Equity Release Council in 2012 has helped bring far better consumer protection and product features to the market. For example, gone are the days where you have to worry about the mortgage growing beyond the value of your home. As lenders now provide protection in the form of No Negative Equity Guarantees, which basically means the mortgage cannot increase beyond the value of your property. Another key improvement is the fact that you no longer have to take a single lump sum out at the start of the mortgage, instead you can decide to drawdown lots of smaller pots of money to act as a source of income if you prefer. This flexibility also helps to reduce the overall interest paid on the loan as you only pay interest on the money actually released. All the money released is completely tax-free! You can use the funds to do with as you wish. It could be used to renovate your home, boost your retirement income, help your loved ones with an early inheritance or book the holiday of your dreams. The choice is entirely yours. What also surprises a lot of people is the fact that the interest rates offered by lifetime mortgage providers are very competitive indeed, with current fixed rates starting at around the 3.5%. Being able to protect and guarantee how much equity you pass on to your loved ones is also very reassuring and by using the Guaranteed Inheritance option this is possible. For example, if you wanted to protect 50% of the property value for your loved ones to preserve their inheritance, you can! You even have the option to pay the interest payments each month to prevent the mortgage from growing. Lifetime mortgage providers are also offering incentives like free valuations; no arrangement fees and cash back options, which all help to reduce the overall cost of applying for a lifetime mortgage. Over the years we’ve helped an array of clients to find the right lifetime mortgage and what’s become clear is that every case has been completely different. That is why it is so important to book your free consultation (01656 772222) to find out if a lifetime mortgage is right for you. Gardening advice PORTHCAWL FLORAL FLOTILLA

Readers of Seaside News will already know that the iconic little flower boat along Bridgend Road on the entrance to Porthcawl is maintained by a thriving voluntary partnership between: Wilderness Allotments, Sustainable Wales (Wales’ premier Environmental Charity who also run ‘Sussed’ - the Fairtrade Community Cooperative by the bandstand), BCBC Parks and a dedicated crew of deckhands/gardeners comprising Dr George Foster and Jean & Jonathan Thomas. The floral display has been so successful over the years that the crew was asked by Porthcawl Town Council to take on maintenance of the council’s vessel on the entrance to town from Pyle. Mel Howells and Neil Birkin from BCBC generously supplied spare flowers from their municipal summer planting for both vessels. This summer, residents and the many visitors to Porthcawl enjoyed a splendid floral welcome to our town from either main direction. If anyone wishes to join the crew and help maintain the boats, please drop an email to Mr Abbasi, at Wilderness Allotments: saulat.abbasi@btinternet.com In passing, readers might also like to know that Keep Wales Tidy have awarded Wilderness Allotments a Green Flag Community Award, in part for our floral flotilla partnership! CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Summer slows, autumn takes over, days grown shorter, nights get cooler and trees shed leaf after leaf after leaf, on the lawn, in the pond and on the patio, what joy! Net your pond before it all gets underway, if leaves fall in and rot in the water; they give off gases that can be lethal to fish and other wildlife. If you are troubled with weeds in your patio, poor boiling water on them (cheaper than weed killer!) This not only kills them but also and seeds lying dormant, heat destroys the plant and root tissue instant shock, a bit cruel but so are they growing there in the first place! Plant Hyacinths now (already!) for a chance of lovely blooms for Christmas, 8 weeks in a cool dark place and then a few weeks on a bright windowsill – the perfect gift! We are having a trip to Malvern Flower show on September 29th, contact us on Facebook if you’d like to join us, we’d love you to come – a great day out! Do you ever wonder why, when you’ve finally found greener pastures, you’re too old and tired to climb over the fence! Chris Early

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS Our 49th Annual Show takes place on Saturday the 7th September and the doors open to the public at 2pm when the exhibits can be viewed and a wide range of goodies can be purchased and enjoyed. Why not come along – who knows you may be inspired to join the Club and enter into the competition next year? Next year will be our celebratory 50th anniversary Annual Show so watch this space for some special events we are planning for 2020! The Show is when, traditionally, Club members renew their membership and receive a schedule of the events planned for the forthcoming year. Please remember however that new members are always welcome to join throughout the year. In the garden harvest time is well underway. Indeed with the quite changeable weather we experienced earlier in the year everything has come along really well. So – what to do with the occasional glut of produce? Well gifts to non-gardening family or friends is one solution. Another is to preserve the produce for later in the year when times get leaner which includes freezing and pickling. So make sure you keep some frozen homegrown peas and beans ready for Christmas dinner! Joyce Pegg New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk Or email EnqLGC@gmail.com

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness ’ Ode to Autumn John Keats After a rather turbulent August with high temperatures, heavy rain and high winds autumn is coming in. Now we reap the harvests of our labours. We must also prepare for winter. When clearing the garden or allotment leave a corner rather untidy to provide shelter for hibernating insects and small animals, maybe a hedgehog. On the allotment empty ground should be sown with green manures. These will improve soil fertility and structure, increase humus content, suppress weeds and prevent loss of nutrients during heavy winter rains. Some varieties to be sown now and dug in early Spring are Field Beans for heavy soils and a nitrogen fixer, Rye Grazing for improving soil structure and Winter Tares for weed suppression, especially when sown with Rye Grazing. Following legal challenges from the manufacturers the ban on the use of the blue metaldehyde slug pellets has been rescinded. It appears the correct procedures were not followed by DEFRA. Alternatives are available, ferric phosphate pellets being one. The Royal Horticultural Society found after extensive testing that ‘home remedies’ such as copper tape; wool pellets, eggshells and horticultural grit were ineffective. September 24th we visit Dewstow Grotto Monmouthshire. Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER

We had our 3rd Valley to Coast Walk on the 10th August which went from Blaengarw to Porthcawl, and what a day it was. We were on the verge of cancelling it because the weather forecast was horrendous. High winds and rain were forecast. We had asked the walkers if they wanted to walk in it and the majority said yes. So we reluctantly went ahead and we were so glad we did. Yes it rained yes it was windy but it was also dry and sunny. I think we had types of weather apart from snow, I believe we even had hail at one point. The walkers were drenched but in high spirits. We had amazing volunteers and we were supported by companies such as The Spar in Porthcawl, Autobahn Finance, Moss Technical, USTU hairdressers in Porthcawl and Porthcawl Gym. Thank you to everyone who turned up to take part and also

DANGERS OF 5G TECHNOLOGY All cell towers emit Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. This is what makes them dangerous. Plans to transition to the new 5G system around the world is already underway. Soon every city will be retrofitted with this technology. Mini cell stations will be placed all throughout towns and cities and they will be installed on the sides or tops of buildings and on street light poles. 5G cell towers are more dangerous than other cell towers compared to earlier versions. 5G is ultra high frequency and ultra high intensity and since the shorter length millimeter waves (MMV) used in 5G do not travel as far (or through objects), with our current number of cell towers the cell signal will not be reliable. To compensate many more mini cell towers must be installed. It is estimated that they will need a mini cell tower every 2 to 8 houses. This will greatly increase our RF Radiation exposure. With RF Radiation, how close the source is to our physical bodies, is more important than the power level (or wattage) of the radiation. RF Radiation dissipates with distance. In other words, a low powered exposure right next to someone is more dangerous than a more powerful exposure a long ways away. Also the longer the exposure time is, the more dangerous it is so 5G will be the worst of both worlds. Read more and see the video at: www.radiationhealthrisks.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

Preparations for our annual concert, on the 14th September, are really progressing well. With a challenging program of 16 numbers the choir is really working hard for the biggest event in the calendar. The diverse program covers traditional male choir pieces; some classic welsh favourites and a variety of numbers from film and stage productions. When you add this to our fantastic special guests ‘Ida’, an exceptional evening’s entertainment is guaranteed. Tickets are going fast so don’t miss out. Contact 07789037458 or 07534602511 for tickets and information. We are pleased to announce that the Polperro Fisherman’s Choir are joining us for a joint charity concert in aid of Latch, on the 5th October at All Saint Church 7pm. This again promised to be an excellent evening of entertainment for a great cause. More details to follow. Our ladies section held a successful summer fayre last month and managed to raise over £700. Well done to our busy ladies for a lovely day. We’re holding an open night for potential new choir members on the 2nd October 7.30 pm at Arlington Church. Come along and see what we do and how much fun we have doing it! Ian Williams

ANNUAL CHOIR LUNCHEON The Choir’s Annual Luncheon, this year, was held at Court Coleman Manor Bridgend. This sell out event is always very popular and this year was no exception with one hundred and nine choristers and guests in attendance. Once guests had enjoyed a drink in the Garden room they were called through to the ballroom where they sat down to a sumptuous Indian buffet. The after luncheon speech was delivered by Jason Mohammad who was inspirational, anecdotal, approachable and kept guests engaged and attentive. A lively auction followed and the generosity of bidders was well appreciated. The musical talents of singer/songwriter Bronwyn Lewis, who gained a role in the BAFTA award winning film Pride and appeared on the voice, captured the hearts of the audience with her beautiful voice and varied repertoire. Bronwyn kindly sang some of the choirs repertoire in both Welsh and English and delighted choristers who gladly joined in with her approval. After a successful raffle, of which the choir would like to say a huge thank you to all those who donated, the piano was rolled out and a spontaneous afterglow was enjoyed by choristers and guests which brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. Jan Craddock

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Had a call from Bridgend indie/ rock band Just Drive to check out their recent recordings and I must admit I was blown away! Apart from the quality of music and the great video production, the group is a breath of fresh air, as most demos sent to me are thrash music recorded in someone’s bedroom. Just Drive is a rock outfit but the tunes are commercial and catchy at the first hearing and you want another listen. That’s a rare occurrence in my book these days. Check out on Facebook their last single, ‘Wait by my Side’, ‘Charmer’ and ‘Romance is Over’ (the video is hilarious!) The line-up is Ryan David (vocals, guitar), Christian Bowen-Jones (guitar), Daniel Goodall (bass) and James Orwin (drums). They are currently recording new material but have two Cardiff gigs, the first at The Moon (September 5th) and then at Clwb Ifor Bach (September 15th). Let me know what you think of them, and I’ll keep you up to date, too. Meanwhile, over in the U.S.A. my good mate Jay Aston and his band Gene Loves Jezebel are doing a sell-out tour supporting The Alarm. I look forward to catching up with Jay when he’s back home. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I often reflect on the nature of documentary films and what they set out to achieve. As a genre, is their purpose to educate, inform or entertain? Readers of a certain age will be able, like myself, to cast their minds back to the halcyon days of the television documentary, which I would date as the 1970s, when the BBC and ITV were not so conscious of ratings and could produce any number of films on serious topics without worrying too much about whether they would appeal to the masses. The World at War series (Thames Television) comes to mind. Obviously digital technology, with miniature cameras, enables programme-makers to show virtually anything these days, but unless I’m very much mistaken, the content is far too often governed by depicting reality in its many guises, and the more dramatic they can make it seem, so much the better. It’s all to do with instant gratification, handed out in small, easy-to-swallow doses – but do these programmes show great knowledge or insight? Do they leave the viewer with the feeling of having gained something valuable, or is it just about filling screen time on tight budgets? Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Clyne Jones Competition. Each member could enter 3 digital images and their 2 top scores were used to determine the winner. Ken Needs and Marilyn Belojica were tied winners with a 20 and a 19 each so we then had to include their 3rd image, Ken had a 15 and Marilyn had a 14 meaning Ken was the winner by just 1 point. Congratulations Ken for winning your first Internal Club Competition. In joint 3rd place were Richard Craze and William Baker with 38 points. Our judge was Gareth Martin from Port Talbot who did an excellent job as always. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels; it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton when we start back in September. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk

Sport reports MID-SEASON SUCCESS FOR PEN Y BONT SLSC

Pen y Bont SLSC’s weekend patrols of Ogmore by Sea river and beach, alongside RNLI lifeguards, are proving vital with many rescues occurring in the recent hot weather. The river mouth’s strong currents often catch out swimmers who are unfamiliar with its dangers, but club members are well trained to help in such situations. Pen y Bont have also retained the Wilkinson Sword in the Welsh Surf Lifesaving Championships, which is a huge achievement as it demonstrates the club’s talent at junior, senior and masters level on the beach! The club is also proud to announce that Ashley Lewis, Jasmine Mann, Millie Wiggins and Meriel Clode have all been selected to represent the GBR team for 2019. They will be heading to the European Lifesaving Championships in Riccione, Italy, in September. We wish them and the rest of the British team all the best out there. Pen y Bont’s nippers, with a short break from competing, have been training hard in preparation for the British National Championships at the end of August. They have even partnered up with another local club, Rest Bay SLSC, for an afternoon’s training and developing friendships! Meriel Clode

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS

It has been a great summer for the Porthcawl Runners. Four club members bagged themselves medals at the South Region Trail Championships, which were incorporated within this year’s Rabbit Run. There was gold in the MM50-54 category for Mike Furness, silver for Romana Maine (MW55-59) while there were also bronze medals for Karen Phillips (MW50-54) and Chris Jones (MM5559) in their respective age categories. Congratulations also to Julian Jones on reaching the 150 parkrun milestone and Susan Thomas on 100 parkruns. The Bridgend County Running League summer events have once again been well received with some excellent performances. At the Kenfig Dunes event, Geraint Lewis came home in fourth

overall from 288 competitors while Hannah Jenkins was second leading female. Then at Newbridge Fields, Mike Furness was second in his age category (MM50-54) while Gabriella Booth was first SENW and Deb Roberts second MW45-49. There was also plenty of fun to be had at the club’s toga themed scavenger hunt and social along with the monthly club parkrun, the Beer Mile and Barry 10k all across one weekend last month. The final BCRL race (Tuska Beach) and the Bristol half are among the events to look forward to this month. Carl Field

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT At last time of writing we were experiencing a 2-month flat spell back in June and July. But, by the end of the month of July we had 5 great days of sunshine and surf. Some of the days were 4ft plus with sunshine and you couldn’t get a tradesman for love nor money to fix up your house. Any surfer self-employed dropped all tools and hit the surf every day. Who can blame them after 2 months of flatness? Most of the days of surf had a slight spoilt to conditions due to the large tides that we get in August and all the water movement it brings. The swell was also a little slow. But alas, the sun was shining and the surf was glassy and paradise was found on Costa del Ogmore once again. David A. Batten www.tuskasurf.co.uk
