CONEY REFUSE TIP! Dear Editor, I have just returned from Coney beach (20th June 2017) where I was sickened by what I’ve just seen lying on the beach; dog mess, empty glass bottles, drink cans, soiled nappies, crisp packets are just some of the items left by visitors to Porthcawl - I simply cannot understand the mentality of such people. What can we do as community to counter such behaviour? Can I suggest that as a bare minimum bins are located on the beach to at least encourage visitors to dispose of their litter. How about signs at every access point to the beach reminding visitors that littering is offence and will be punished by fixed penalty fines. Can Porthcawl Town Council, BCBC and (or) the patrons of the fairground and amusements fund litter collection during the Summer months? Can the patrolling lifeguards periodically announce over their tannoy system the need for visitors to dispose of their litter. I’ve never got involved with community issues in the past but I couldn’t let this matter go without voicing my opinion. Most Porthcawl townsfolk enjoy our coastline, whether they be swimmers (as I am), surfers, fishermen, lifeguards, dog walkers, etc. so surely there must be something that we can do collectively to address this issue. I dread to think what dangers we are exposing our children to when they undertake nipper training on Coney beach. Andrew Mundy, Porthcawl
RE: PAINT THE BOTTLE BANK Dear Editor, I totally agree with Douglas Davies. Whoever designed and happily spawned upon us this ugly build in the first place clearly have little taste or sympathy for our beautiful Porthcawl coastal town. Too many seaside towns have been scarred with ‘bright ideas’, with little or no thought for the classic architecture, such as the glorious Georgian and Victorian buildings that were designed with charm and sophistication. Sadly this green monstrosity is a slight on our seafront and urgently needs power hosing or at very least painted (white), on an annual basis! H Townsend, Porthcawl

EMYR’S KARAVAN4THEKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE Dear Editor, GET £40,000 TAR We want to ask you please for further support with a new project. We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emir, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. It wasn’t there for Emyr and others but we can change that now. Please run, walk, jump, dance- anything you can do again. Our first event is the Big Push a walk from Pen-y-fan to The Atlantic Porthcawl - do not be put off by the distance - The Big Push is about being involved, quite a lot of people have decided to start at the Briton Ferry stage or Meeting us along our gorgeous coastline; we are trying to keep the walk along country paths, bridle ways and canals as much as possible. Please register via face book @ The Big Push 2017 or at our website http://www. emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07503151649. We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Hugh Owen, Paul Downes and Christian Evans.
We want to reach the £40,000 target

NEW BINS FOR PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, It was great to read the other day that Porthcawl council was purchasing some 40 new litter bins for the promenade area with more to follow from the BCBC but ( there is always a but ) the existing bins regularly have the doors open, is this because all the keys are lost, a lack of training or a lack of maintenance. The existing litter bins must have been extremely expensive when originally purchased and due to one or other of the above reasons are in a sorry state and litter blows out onto the roadway. Hoping that any new bins will be better maintained. John Finney, Porthcawl

Letters PAVEMENT IN MERLIN CLOSE, PORTHCAWL
Dear Editor, I enclose photos to show the unsightly, dangerous pavements outside my house in Merlin Close. I understand other streets in Rest Bay are similar. One side of the street is laid to tarmac but the other is left in this neglected, shabby state. I hope the council intend to sort this out in the near future? Anne Jones, Porthcawl
1ST WORLD WAR - PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, I have read your article in the Seaside News (dated July 2017 issue) regarding the history in the 1st World War on Page 18. My Great Uncle Rhys Trevor Evans died on 1st September 1917. He was 21 years old and lived at “St Enid” 54 Suffolk Place Porthcawl. He was a second Lieutenant in the 4th Bn attd 14th Bn of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. My Great Uncle’s memorial is in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. I would be grateful if there is anyone out there that can give me and the family more information. As we are going to Belgium on 1st September 2017, one hundred years after his death to the day, it would be interesting what the people who live in the house know, and whether they are related to us. TARMAC BEACH & METRO SYSTEM Dear Editor, A while ago you had an article in your magazine about renewing the tarmac beach, I thought what a great idea, but then nothing? is this another pipe dream that Bridgend council not prepared to tackle. The article said that a stepped concrete beach would be used, similar to resorts on the south coast of England. Great if this goes ahead as part of the sea defences as well. But as with these resorts of the south coast as well as abroad why not put in a sea swimming pool / paddling pool as well at not much extra cost, but as a new attraction for this beach as there is not much use of it at the moment, there used to be a small sea pool on the right side but was filled with concrete WHY? Pictures are of a sea pool that is only 4ft deep but has water entrance and self-levelling exits, something like this would be a great addition for a under used part of main Porthcawl. Also what has happened to the Metro system to link Porthcawl to Bridgend and Cardiff ? again big news months ago now vanished, it should not take 1 and ½ hours to get to a city that should be ½ hours away Paul Boyer, Porthcawl
SKER BEACH Dear Editor, Walking across Sker Beach from the lifeguard station to direction post 15 on the Kenfig Nature Reserve, I commented to my husband how clean the beach appeared. There was virtually no man made litter, just seaweed, shells, driftwood and the odd huge jellyfish. Chatting to my neighbour the following day, I mentioned how beautiful Sker Beach was at the moment. He told me a gentleman named Trevor who lives in Porthcawl has been painstakingly removing human litter from the beach and disposing of it. I want to say thank you to ‘Trevor of Porthcawl’ for making our little bit of the World a better place and improving the quality of one of our lovely beaches single handed. Mary Webber, Kenfig Hill

Letters DUCKLINGS Dear Editor, A pair of mallard ducks returned to my garden in March for the second year and resumed their routine of feeding, swimming and sleeping. This year however the female (unbeknown to me) made a nest in the rockery, laid nine eggs and proceeded to incubate them. She rarely left her nest for the twenty eight days they took to develop. Sunday June 25th I found a broken shell near the nest, Monday 7am. She and eight ducklings were happily dabbling in the pond. I had netted over the two ponds trying to keep all safe from magpies, crows etc. but she insisted on exploring the whole garden with ducklings in tow. It proved to be a very hectic day with me feeling like a demented collie dog trying to shepherd them back to the ponds and safety. On several occasions the babies needed a helping hand to reach Mums ambitious manoeuvres!
www.seasidenews.co.uk
She was down, they were up, she was up ,they were down. Tuesday 5am. They were waking up on the rockery and by 7am they were gone, she had followed her instincts and headed for water despite the epic walk ahead. My feelings were very mixed. Thursday my neighbour saw a mallard with young crossing at the roundabout at Newton Nottage hill. A kind man stopped and gathered them up and took them to safety. Pictures on Porthcawl First, only six ducklings remained, one fell down a drain but was rescued. I felt they had to be my little family, too much of a coincidence. Sunday 8.30am. Mum was back in my garden alone and my heart sank, had she lost them all? After a good feed and drink she left, no more than ten minutes, so I was hopeful that she had stashed the ducklings somewhere safe. This pattern continued sometimes accompanied by the drake for several days missed a few days then reappeared but had a feed and left. I am hopeful she will succeed in rearing a few of her brood. I have walked around the lake but not spotted her as yet. Will they return next year I wonder, if so can I take the worry, however, it was a privilege and a joy to have them. Julie Smith, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Hiding Places By Katherine Webb Wiltshire, 1922. When murder comes to the idyllic, sleepy village of Slaughterford one hot summer, nobody is prepared for it - or for the sudden loss of one of their own. The killing is a shock to all who knew the victim, and when Pudding Cartwright’s brother is suspected of the crime she is drawn towards newcomer Irene, and both are determined to identity the killer in their midst. Unaware of just how deep the roots of the crime lie, Pudding and Irene begin to uncover unforeseeable truths, but the chance finding of a mysterious object, will change everything. All these books and many more are available from your local library. Seaside News | 16

To mark the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo the 41st Regiment of Foot Society visited the museum today and proved to be a very popular attraction resulting in record visitor numbers. Also on display at the museum was an original Waterloo campaign medal. Formed at the end of June 2002 in South Wales by a group of experienced Napoleonic re-enactors, the 41st Regt. Foot aim to portray this fine regiment as they would have been during the Early 19th Century and the War of 1812. During this period the 41st Foot was based in Canada and took part in many of the key battles of the war. Working alongside the Regimental museum in Cardiff Castle and with help from an established group of re-enactors based in Canada, this society aims to highlight, to the public at large, what life was like for the British soldier during this often overlooked conflict. The 41st boasts a full living history campsite, and works together with other re-enactment societies to present battle re-enactments and drill displays for the viewing public. This can be anything from a small skirmish up to a fullscale battle involving Artillery barrages and Cavalry charges. As with all societies we are always looking for new recruits who wish to take the Kings Shilling, they welcome all members of the family and anyone can take part in this exciting and unusual pastime. The museum look forward to inviting them back very soon. Chris Swidenbank

REST BAY – VENUE FOR SPEED TRIALS
When you visit Rest Bay, you naturally acknowledge its beauty, the surf and the Old Rest Home building that holds its own memories. Yet, did you know that it was the venue for car speed trials? The South Wales Automobile Club, established in 1903, held a meeting in Porthcawl’s Esplanade Hotel (now Esplanade House) in July 1905, which was the forerunner of the organised trials that would be held annually at Rest Bay until 1925. An open meeting held on 21st June 1913 proved a success but it was the speed trial in 1914, jointly held by the S.W.A.C, and the Cardiff Motor Club, which was the most prestigious. Amidst ‘scorching weather,’ it attracted thousands of spectators, who crowded the rocks around, eager to view the variety of motor machines including cars and motorcycles. According to the report, the sand was firm despite pockets of water that lay in places on the one-mile track. Presided over by Lord Ninian Stuart M.P, the chief car performance of the day was that of Leslie Hands on a 25/50 Talbot, reaching a speed of 71.43 mph, whilst J.P Board of Bridgend received the motorcycle prize, reaching a speed of 56.43mph. CORNELI PRIMARY NEWS What a busy half term this has been! Year 6 children learned about keeping safe at Crucial Crew, foundation classes had a super day at Mountain View Ranch on the Gruffalo Trail, building dens and toasting marshmallows and Year 4 children’s library challenge culminated in a quiz and penalty shoot-out. The Walking Bus took us to school, Years 4 and 5 have been swimming and we had fun on an outdoor learning day. Visitors from the golf museum in Scotland told us about the Ladies Championship event and some children even got to polish the trophies! Robots, Pepper and Si also visited and it was very exciting to see some of the amazing things they could do. We are looking forward to working with them in the future. Congratulations go to Luke Wallis, Kasey-Lea, Thomas-Humphries and Austin Thomas prize winners in the Urdd Art Competition, well done too to everyone who entered as all the artwork was fantastic. Fantastic too was the news that following an assessment day, we have been given the prestigious Eco-Schools Platinum Award for our environmental work and our thanks go to all who have contributed over the years towards this valuable achievement. WEST PARK PRIMARY NEWS Recently we participated in a Sponsored Walk in support of a charity close to our friend and green grocer, Terry Jones’ heart. The charity Road Peace supports people who have been affected by road traffic accidents. The children received a memorable assembly from our helpful PCSO’s who highlighted the importance of road safety. Thanks to the generosity of our families we raised a fantastic sum for this worthy charity. ZoolabUk paid us a visit and brought some wriggly rainforest residents for us to see. The children learnt about rainforest inhabitants and had the opportunity to use their very enquiring minds! British Golf Museum Curator, Hannah Fleming gave an assembly about the Ricoh Womens’ British Open and brought the impressive Ladies Open Amateur Championship trophies to school. The pupils had the opportunity to be photographed with the trophies and our own little ladies visited the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club for a civilised afternoon of lessons and lunch. As part of the drive by the Welsh Government - Hafan Cymru’s Spectrum Project came to Pîl Primary School to raise awareness of Healthy Relationships and associated issues. Our Year 6 pupils were given the tools and training to lead a workshop for our Year 2 pupils. All pupils enjoyed and gained awareness from the day. Ellie Willmot and Ollie Averis said, “It was fun because Year 6 taught us about keeping safe. I liked the part where they put food colouring, oil and water in a jug. The water showed people we love and the oil represented strangers!” Zack Walford stated, “I really enjoyed the spectrum project because it taught me about healthy relationships and the safety zone.” “It was a good day. I really enjoyed it and it was great fun working with Year 2 pupils, putting smiles on their faces and teaching them to be safe!” said Brandon Perham. Mr Bloomfield (Year 6) and Miss Rees (Year 2)

SCHOOLS LES MISERABLES – SHOW REVIEW
The Performing Arts Department at Bryntirion Comprehensive School made school history by selling out all three performances of ‘Les Miserables’ (Schools Edition). The audience were treated to stellar performances by a large cast of hard working pupils and each night finished with a standing ovation. Head of Performing Arts, Mrs Claire Hawkes, commented that she had chosen ‘Les Miserables’ for the wide range of roles in the show and she was delighted with the way pupils had risen to the challenges presented, bringing the characters to life. With strong and passionate performance throughout, from the emotional prologue to the exquisite final ‘Bring Him Home’. A special mention for Matthew Daly (Jean Valjean), Dafydd Skilton (Javert), Phoebe Spence-Evans (Fantine), Shauna Holmes (Eponine), Scot Hawtin (Marius), Naomi Jenkins (Cosette), Geraint David (Enjolras), Nia Pennell (Young Cosette), Owen Jarvis (Gavroche) and Gareth Harfoot & Kirsty Richards as The Thenardier’s. The whole cast left the audience feeling like they had been to a West End production. Indeed, word of the quality performances at Bryntirion spread to the West End, as the London cast at the Queens Theatre recorded a special video message of congratulations, which they sent to the young cast on Friday.

CYNFFIG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL It’s been another inspiring term at Cynffig and I am proud to celebrate our pupils’ achievements. In sport Lowri Thomas and Ben Evans (Year 10) continue to represent Wales in Basketball. Our year 8 girls participated in the Beach Touch Rugby Ospreys Cup winning 6 of their matches. Years 8 and 9 competed in the Glamorgan Valleys Junior Athletics Championships congratulations to Ebony Rees (Year 9) who placed 3rd in Shot Putt. Year 7 also competed in their first athletics championships; special mention to Thomas Atwood who came 2nd in the 1500m and Mia Lunn who came 3rd in the High Jump. As a community - pupils, teachers, parents and friends of Cynffig walked 8 miles together in a ‘Stand Against Bullying’ and we welcomed our friends from Louisiana for a day of music, freestyle football with Daniel Cutting and cultural exchange. Our pupils have shown determination and skill with William Evans, Oliver Howe and Chloe Powell (year 7) competing in an intense Bridgend Spelling Bee, which resulted in a win for William! And finally this September we will welcome our largest year 7 cohort ever. I am delighted as ever that so many parents have chosen our supportive community school. As we look towards celebrating our pupils and staffs achievements this August I wish them and you a safe and happy summer. Hannah Castle Head Teacher www.cynffigcomprehensive.co.uk
THE END OF AN ERA FOR PORTHCAWL PRIMARY It has been another hugely busy and successful year at Porthcawl Primary and we end the year with a big change. Mr Wood will be retiring at the end of this academic year after 17 years as Head teacher of Porthcawl Primary. Mr Wood has steered the school through three successful Estyn inspections during his time and has also led the school to a number of national awards, most recently at the Achievement for All U.K. awards. As a leader Mr Wood is both supportive but also inspiring and he encourages everyone he works with to reach their full potential. His enthusiasm and advice is one of the main reasons that as a school we have achieved so much. The staff would like to thank Mr Wood for everything he has done for all of us; we will miss his unique sense of humour in the future! We would like to wish Mr Wood good luck in his retirement and we hope he will come and visit us soon. This month also sees our year 6 moving onto pastures new. We would like to also wish them the best of luck both next year and in the future. We hope everyone has a great summer! Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

SCHOOLS AFON Y FELIN NEWS
Our Sports Day went ahead as planned this year, with the rain kindly staying away until the last race had been run. Thanks to all the parents and families who came to support their children and our school. All the winners received a sticker and a certificate. The red ribbons remained on the cup with Ty Ysgol winning the cup outright, a very successful year for them. Our new, exciting library is now finished, with a wonderful research and learning zone, it is a very popular area with the pupils, and the enthusiasm to learn is plain to see. Our Member of Parliament Mrs Madeline Moon came to visit recently, because our school has achieved so much in recent years. She was very impressed, its good to see all our hard work celebrated! Thanks to The School Council’s decision, the children now have some new and exciting playground equipment, break times are now so much more fun! Our little Acorns in the nursery have now won the attendance cup twice in one month, competition is high amongst the children for their class to win it for the week. Class 3 went to the seaside for a day trip, the weather was good and some great sandcastles were built, and we played host to some American visitors, who shared stories of their home life. AJ Pritchard
CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS These final weeks have been full of exciting activities including a visit from the Dog’s Trust. We celebrated our Platinum Eco Award with an activity day and winners of the Healthy Lunchbox Competition got to eat their lunch at a special ‘top table’ with Mr Mills. Infant children had fun engaging with the environment on Den Day, resulting in some amazing structures. An Ugly Bug Ball and tree planting is planned to round off the celebrations. Fun too for our Nursery and Reception children on their visit to Folly Farm, where rain could not spoil the thrill of seeing the animal’s ‘claws, paws and whiskers’. Lower juniors are also looking forward to their visit to the Gower Heritage Park. Our Year 6 children have visited their comprehensive schools and Nursery children have engaged with the Playgroup for an enjoyable Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Bear Hunt and were lucky to have a fine day for their sports. Not so lucky, were the Infant and Junior sports which had to be cancelled. However, our netball and football players, who reached the semi final, had a super day at the Litchard Tournament. We were so proud of them all. Our Year 6 Leaver’s Evening concert performance was a showcase of superb talent which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We give them our good wishes for the future and to all for a happy summer holiday. Sue Jones Corneli Primary School Seaside News | 28

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL NEWS
This time last year, our Year 10 students completed improvements to Cosy Corner, near the harbour as part of the community project section of the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification. The improvements were enjoyed all Summer long by residents and visitors and pupils had tremendous satisfaction from improving the local area. This year, the students set themselves the task of restoring the Locks Lane footpath/cycle track for the same community project. During the last week of term, Year 10 pupils and teachers spent two days widening the path, cutting back overhanging branches and brambles, exposing the existing stone wall and making the track usable again for everyone. We hope that the local residents enjoy the benefits during the Summer and beyond. At the same time, many students volunteered their services in the Porthcawl area - giving their time to charity shops, the Library, and Primary Schools as part of a project to give something back to the local community. On 18 July, staff and pupils were bolstered by the support of members of the RAF and the Army to complete their annual charity “Lavender Walk” of approximately 12 miles to the Prince of Wales in Kenfig. On 19th July, with the support of Keep Wales Tidy, pupils also spent a day cleaning up the beaches of Rest Bay and Pink Bay and thoroughly enjoyed making a positive contribution to the town. POEMS MARY AND MARTHA
Mary and Martha, of Biblical fame From the same loving parents Yet so different each name ‘Twas Mary who chose that part, better by far And for love of her Saviour poured her fragrance so rare Yet when Lazarus died, it was Martha who stood To wait to tell Jesus, We still trust you as Lord We don’t understand but we know you are good Jesus wept with them both. Both were so deeply loved. And so our Mary and Martha, though from the same litter Both with their own gifts, differing one from the other And we all mourn our Mary – just for a time she was given But we’ll go on together, bound in a love that’s from heaven. For we each one are special, and as pets give us their hearts And we each one are treasured, have our own special art Of expressing our love to those come by our way So with joy both dear doggies are remembered today Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
IN MULTICULTURAL HARMONY AND PEACE Innocent people being killed, Severely injured or maimed, And the people involved are brutal, And don’t even feel ashamed.
Aggressive actions being used, Against innocent people enjoying their lives, Some sustaining catastrophic injuries, Not knowing if they will survive. These individuals are just evil fanatical monsters, Using religion to sustain fear to the human race, With many from that same religion, Thinking this is an utter disgrace. We need to get a clear message out there, That this violence must now cease, So we can all live together, In multicultural harmony and peace. David Boyce, Brackla, Bridgend Seaside News | 32

It was a night some years ago I filled the bath with soapy water In an effort to coerce this grubby child, my only daughter “But mum I’m clean” she wailed at me, “I’m much too young to sweat” I don’t think so dear I thought, more determined to get her wet. When she was small she loved to bath and laugh and dunk her head Under bubbles, boats and ducks and frogs before she went to bed And now a few years down the cobbled path of childhood years The bathroom is a conflict zone of petulance and tears Why such a battle to submerge this little slice Of sugar and spice and all things nice Why so bold at eight years old? “Get - in - this - bath before it goes cold” Well that was then and this is now, some 10 or more years after She saunters in from her busy day in a cloud of chatty laughter I smile and ask this home-made adult would she like a cup of tea Before I realise she’s talking to that retched phone again not me But she grins a big hello my way and blows an airy kiss to follow And I just know before she says, she’s heading for the bath to wallow Soap and glory, headphones, iPad, visiting a different world Just long enough to soak up moonlight as the evening hours unfurl So why the battle to get in the bath first Charging upstairs like a camel with a thirst And why does she always have to be told “Leave - some - hot - water I don’t like it cold” Another decade passes by and I am bathing her young kids Squishing sponges, squashing soap, squeals of laughter - I skid Landing on my derrière, my legs are floundering in the air Flannels, frogs and fish ... crash-landing all around me there “Get up nanny come and play don’t stay down there being lazy” Oh my God, my head, my bones, my pride, myself gone crazy! So that’s why I’m sitting here this day this way my arm all swathed Waiting for my daughter to help ME get ready to be bathed Why does she battle to not have a laugh “Give in to your mirth and give me that bath” I say to her now as she pretends to scold “Get - in - that - water - mum before it goes cold” Julie Matthews, Porthcawl
BIN DAY
Last night Ted did a fab’lous job of sorting out our tins, Our glass and plastics, card and all, for our new bags and bins. After an hour, I went to see what took him quite so long, He saw me and he gave a wail, “Oh Bet, I’ve done it wrong!” “Does card go in the brown or white? And what of Tetrapaks? I can’t make head nor tail of this, there are too many sacks!” I phoned the Council as I had these ifs and buts and maybes, But most of all to chase the bags for my Ted’s Tena Ladys. Purple, lilac, mauve or puce, the colour didn’t matter, As long as I could stop our rubbish bags from growing fatter. My third attempt did get me through, then half an hour of waiting, For someone to be free to talk, it really was frustrating. Finally a nice young man called Tom came on the line, “Mrs Jones, they’re on the way, we’ve had a busy time.” “Just do your best with what you have, it’s only the first week, Once the system’s all in place, you’ll see it’s not so bleak.” It’s Friday now, so bin day, and what a sight I seen, The new recycling lorry oh so shiny, white and clean. The chaps appeared at our front wall, but went straight on next door, I rushed out ready to complain but stopped still when I saw… Our bags weren’t there! “Ted come and see, someone’s nicked them all! We try to save the planet but our neighbours don’t play ball!” He shuffled out, looked at his feet and gave a hefty sigh, Then raised his head and slowly turned to look me in the eye. “Sorry, Bet, I should’ve said, there’s been a little blip, All that effort’s gone to waste, I took it up the tip.” Betty Jones, Porthcawl

News News WHEN THINGS GO WRONG When things go wrong, consumers have a number of options available to them to make a complaint and seek redress. The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) exists to resolve complaints on behalf of individuals and businesses on a wide range of financial products from pensions to travel insurance. It probably won’t come as a great surprise to learn that the top three complaints handled in the last year were mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) with over 160,000 new complaints made, followed by packaged bank accounts and travel insurance. Worryingly increasingly complaints about payday loans and credit are growing. 454 complaints were received from the Bridgend constituency; just under half of which were upheld. The Ombudsman has legal powers to intervene to resolve complaints and can also pick up on new scams which sadly have become all to frequent. Whatever the nature of your complaint, you have to complain to the company concerned first before the Ombudsman can act. If after 8 weeks you have not received satisfactory response, then you can get in touch with the Ombudsman by phone on 0800 023 4567 or 0300 123 9 123. You can also find more information including factsheets on the FOS website http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/ consumer/complaints.htm. HARBOURSIDE NEWS: DEVELOPER CHOSEN We are delighted to announce that Andrew Scott Ltd have been chosen to construct the Porthcawl Maritime Centre. This is another significant milestone for our organisation. The Porthcawl Harbourside team will now work with Andrew Scott Ltd in developing the design of the Maritime Centre, with the aim of starting the main construction in October 2017. It is expected that the construction period itself will provide a range of learning and development opportunities for the local community including apprenticeships, work placements, jobs and opportunities for local suppliers and is a very exciting time for the local area. Once developed, the Porthcawl Maritime Centre will also provide learning and development opportunities, employment opportunities, increase tourism and visitor income and make a huge difference to the local, regional and national economic landscape. Meanwhile, progress on our day-to-day operations continue. Our SeaQuest Coastal Science & Discovery events continue to prove popular with residents, schoolchildren and visitors to Porthcawl, and you can find full details of our previous and upcoming events on our social media pages: https://www.facebook.com/ HarboursidePorthcawl and https://twitter.com/HarboursidePro. WORK DUE TO START ON MARITIME CENTRE THE best news we have had in Porthcawl for a long time is the announcement that work is due to start on the Maritime Centre. The small team of mainly volunteers behind this project deserve the highest praise. Led by Mike Clarke and Stuart Benton, the Harbourside project group had a vision for Porthcawl and this vision is about to be realised. This group shows that with determination and commitment, ordinary residents who want change and improvement can move mountains. They have got over land acquisition, planning and financial hurdles to reach the point where they have appointed contractors to carry out the work. The design of the scheme will now be taken forward ready for the October start. The centre will provide a number of facilities for both visitors and residents alike and will give local tourism a welcome boost. Things may at last be looking up for Porthcawl after a wasted decade when the council’s regeneration scheme foundered. But we now have plans for development at Rest Bay and the upgrading of the town beach. Porthcawl is the jewel in BCBC’s crown and its glittering heart will be the Harbourside Project. EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS FOR PORTHCAWL It’s wonderful to see how the Grade II-listed Jennings Building is being invested with a new lease of life. Originally built in 1832 as the southern terminus for the Dyffryn – Llynfi - Porthcawl horse-drawn tram road which transported iron and coal from the Llynfi Valley, the Jennings Building has come a long way. It’s been transformed as part of a £2.5m project by Wales-based developers ABA Holdings with support from Bridgend County Borough Council, Finance Wales, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Cadw. Now the ground floor of the building is home to a coffee lounge, a pizzeria and a restaurant with a theatre-style kitchen bar and full height atrium, while the upper floor has been converted into 13 units with workspaces and loft bedrooms that will create a community of people living and working on site. This is great news for Porthcawl, and a landmark development that will attract locals and visitors alike. When considered alongside the recent improvements to the marina, the community-driven Maritime Centre proposal, the Customs House and Old Pilot Lookout Tower restorations, plans for an integrated Watersports Centre and Café at Rest Bay and a refurbished harbour kiosk with new facilities, these are exciting developments for Porthcawl. News WE WILL REMEMBER THEM Last month, I was honoured to attend a special service at Stormy Down to commemorate those who served at RAF Stormy Down during WWII. During the dedication service, a memorial stone was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan Mrs Kate Thomas CVO. I was very pleased to have been asked to lay a wreath on behalf of the Welsh Government. Other dignitaries were also invited to lay a wreath including the Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns on behalf of the UK Government. It was a very moving service and one which was a fitting and lasting tribute. After the service, there was a fly past from a Hurricane and a Spitfire. The Red Arrows also took part to mark the occasion. It has been fascinating to learn about the importance of Stormy Down and the part it played during the Second World War as I had always assumed that it was a dummy airfield. I also visited the ‘War in the Air’ Exhibition at Porthcawl Museum which has more information about Stormy Down’s history. I would like to thank Rob and Ann Taylor and Ceri and Paul Joseph for showing me around the special exhibition. Carwyn Jones AM Welsh Labour Leader
BOREDOM-BUSTING SUMMER ACTIVITIES! From assault courses to junior sports camps and a summer reading challenge, a vast number of activities and events will help to keep local children inspired, entertained and energised throughout the summer break. ‘ParkLives’, a national project funded by Coca Cola and supported locally by BCBC, is bringing a series of free family-friendly outdoor activities to local parks and green spaces. Most of the action is taking place at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend, where every Thursday from 27 July to 31 August there’ll be hour-long activities including Mini Gladiators, Gladiators, Zumba, Assault Course, Balance Bikes and Parkour to choose from - all for free. The popular Active 4 Life sessions are back at nine venues across the county borough, offering youngsters aged eight to 12 the chance to enjoy sports, games, arts and creative activities, while younger children can enjoy Mini Play 4 Life sessions at local Flying Start centres. There’s plenty going on at Halo Leisure Centres too while our partners Awen Cultural Trust are inviting youngsters to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge at libraries, and there’s a packed programme of events at venues including the Grand Pavilion, Bryngarw Country Park and Maesteg Town Hall - full details at www.bridgend.gov.uk/schoolsout. NEW CCTV VAN DRIVES HOME SCHOOL SAFETY MESSAGE People regularly raise concerns about the issue of illegal and dangerous parking outside local schools. This is a serious issue that happens in every community in Bridgend County Borough. It puts pupils, drivers and other motorists at risk, and causes traffic congestion. In response to this, the council is launching a new mobile CCTV van to patrol local schools and help tackle the problem. The van will be clearly marked as a mobile enforcement unit and will take footage of drivers who park their cars illegally on ‘keep clear’ markings, obstruct school bus bays or ignore other parking restrictions that put people at risk. Offending drivers will then receive a fixed penalty notice through the post. The move is intended to help drive home the point that motorists should always think about safety when parking near schools. The new CCTV van will also be used to discourage dangerous parking in other locations – for example, parking in a bus stop affects bus operators, delays passengers and disrupts timetables, while parking on zig-zags near crossings can restrict a pedestrian’s view. I’m looking forward to seeing the new CCTV van in action as it is going to significantly improve safety outside local schools. FEATURES PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB
A trip was organised by Mr & Mrs Keith Duggan Chairman of the Porthcawl Stroke Club on Wednesday 28th June. Unfortunately the weather stopped the trip going ahead to Cardiff Bay, so members were disappointed at first, but Chairman Mr keith Duggan had already organised a meal in the afternoon to the Farmers Arms in St Bride’s. The Landlord, Mr Fred Thomas, gave us a warm welcome and Angharad Hughes was racing around the tables, as there were about 25 members in all. The food was excellent, so well done to the chef, also the service. The Porthcawl Stroke Club looks forward to a future visit, as everyone enjoyed the Farmers so much. If any member of your family has had a stroke and would like to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, please contact Keith and Mary Duggan on (01656) 773376 were a warm welcome will be given. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this we are looking forward to an outing to Brecon and a ride on the Mountain Railway. Forecast is good but maybe take a mac! We had a hiccup at our meeting in May when the speaker was unable to come due to traffic problems. But we are always ready for anything and enjoyed a quiz after the business meeting and a longer time to chat over tea which we don’t always have time for at our busy meetings. Diana Richardson, Judith Orphan and Helen Taylor represented us at the National AGM in Sheffield and were able to meet up with a friend from Mansfield. We were twinned with her guild which has since sadly closed. But the friendships continue. The mandate on Fracking Regulations was passed and the AGM decided that it was happy to stay with the twice yearly changing of the hour. We have enjoyed another lunchtime drama at the Pavilion and a meal at the Saltwater Inn. We do not have a meeting in August but are hosting a Cream Tea on August 23rd. Tickets only but there may be some spare so do get in touch. It was an excellent afternoon last year so I am looking forward to it. Dorothy Thomas Tel: (01656) 772157

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Steve Lock is the Children’s Youth and Family Worker at Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl and well known in local school assemblies. During the first two weeks of August he will join a team of 18 charity volunteers in Gulu, Northern Uganda, supporting the Gulu Mission Initiative, a ‘not-for-profit’ charity started by his wife Helen in 2007. The area was ravaged by 22 years of civil war, brutality and child soldiers, so when Helen visited Gulu and saw their need, she promised to help local Christians, James and Phoebe Ochan rebuild their community. Focusing on education, community growth and social action projects GMI have helped start a school that from nothing now has over 600 pupils in nursery, primary and secondary education. They have resourced various small business enterprises, provided new wells and motorbike ambulances, and run many health and hygiene programmes. Local Christians have also been encouraged with personal visits, gifts of local dialect bibles and church leaders conferences. You can learn more about their visits by checking out their website at gulumission.org. Please remember this good work in your prayers, and you can hear more from Steve himself on his return to Porthcawl. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church
NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Over the last few months, Tesco, Brewery Lane, Bridgend and the Talbot Community Centre in Kenfig Hill have been taking part in the Tesco Community Food Connection, where their surplus fresh produce is collected once a week by Committee members of the Talbot and taken to the Centre so that members there have the opportunity to take away with them various items of produce. The Talbot cook also has the chance to use some of Tesco’s fresh produce to include in her menu of the day. Our photograph shows two ladies from the Community Food Connection, Angharad and Nikki, with Talbot Director Betty Harman, and Chief Exec Cheryl Butcher. Our day trip to Saundersfoot and Pendine Sands was an excellent day out, on one of the hottest days of the year. We were able to sit by the sea, have an ice cream, have a paddle to cool our feet – even the tide came in to meet us! We are now busy planning our Autumn/Winter programme, hope to have some news soon. FEATURES LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS
Porthcawl Lions Club are basking in the success of their flagship event to mark 100 years of worldwide service work by Lions Clubs International; when over 200 people attended All Saints Church, Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl on 21st June for ‘An Evening in the company of Niall Ferguson’. Event co-ordinator, and longstanding Lions member, Martin Patten, said the Club was “overwhelmed” by the public support for the evening, raising £2000.00 for causes supported by Porthcawl Lions Club. As his year of Presidency came to a close, Don Tickner (A charter member of Porthcawl Lions) expressed his thanks to Club members and the wider community for their support, and wished incoming President Andrew Collier good luck for a successful year of service and fund-raising work. Ongoing events include the Vintage Fayre (5th August at the Porthcawl Rugby Club) and the car boot sales through August and into September. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The Apostle Paul played a leading role in the spreading of Christianity. Indeed most of the narrative of the Biblical book of Acts chronicles this. But behind every major personality, there is always a whole host of supporting characters. These are the foot soldiers that work quietly and almost invisibly in the background. They are seldom noted, easily overlooked and almost never remembered. Their names are often forgotten or never mentioned. To how many nameless heroes and heroines do each and every one of us owe a debt of gratitude? How many forgotten souls have made sacrifices and selflessly intervened on our behalf in order to save us from our own worse selves? We could so easily forget them and believe that the people we have become, and any good fortune we have been lucky to experience have made solely of our own making. But the truth is that without the pivotal contributions of the unsung heroes in our lives, none of it would not be. So my challenge for us this month is for us all to remember, and to appreciate the nameless ones. God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

PORTHCAWL U3A
In our highly competitive society, attending a first formal interview can be a nerve-racking experience, especially as a teenager. The more practice young people get in acquiring and then fine-tuning those important self-presentation skills the more success is likely to come their way. To inject a touch of realism to the process of interview preparation, staff at Porthcawl Comprehensive called upon members of Porthcawl U3A for assistance. Ever ready to answer a call to support their community, U3A members duly conducted mock interviews with Year 12 students, with each student allocated a half hour slot to be grilled by two members - many of whom are former teachers and learning professionals. The whole process was made to be as realistic as possible and was followed by the delivery of feedback directly to the student - helpful hints and practical advice. Head teacher Andrew Slade was delighted with the outcome: “This was an important opportunity to develop and enhance interview skills for our students, many of whom are about to compete for places at some of the best universities in the country. The feedback given by members of Porthcawl U3A was really useful in allowing our students to critically reflect and refine their crucial self-presentation skills”. An early spring visitor to our headquarters at Cefn Junction Signal Box, was Richard Butcher, model maker of South Corneli who added to our railway lay out. Many hours of ‘engineering’ led to a new tunnel and a mine similar to Newlands Colliery with its drift entrance and pithead winding gear. Richard’s work, aided by Alan Jenkins of MIB models, will be on display throughout August when the signal box is open from 2-5pm at weekends. The first Saturday (5th August) features a vintage tea afternoon at the box, with stalls and games and our 100 club draw which supports the running of Cefn Junction. On Saturday 26th August we remember the explosion at Parc Slip which killed 112 men some 125 years ago. JUPITER NOW HAS 69 KNOWN MOONS The bright planet now in the south-west is Jupiter, the biggest planet in the Solar System. A new study has shown that it has at least 69 moons. The study, which was originally conducted to survey distant objects within the Kuiper Belt and beyond Pluto, also aimed to look for new planets such as Planet X. It just so happened that Jupiter was within the area in which the research was conducted. The research imaged fields near Jupiter, offering a chance to examine the regions near the planet and to look for its moons. The already-known moons were detected as well as new ones. Some previously detected ones had been ‘lost’ but were re-discovered, and some not previously known were seen for the first time. There could still be other new Jupiter moons detected in the observations, but the researchers want to re-observe and confirm them first in 2018 to know for sure. In 2003, there were several known Jupiter moons that were believed to have been lost and were never recognized again until now. In 2016, there were 14 ‘lost’ Jupiter moons. Five have now been found. The original Masonic Hall was situated in the converted Congregational Chapel in New Road and served Porthcawl Freemasons well for thirty years but in 1956/57 the rapidly decaying fabric of the Hall became a concern. The walls were frequently streaming with moisture, with the paint flaking off, the carpet constantly damp and the building a hazard with the whole structure in an advanced state of decay. It was eventually agreed to purchase the whole site for £12,000 and build a new Masonic Hall. Lodge Meetings were held at Nottage Junior School whilst the new Hall was under construction. Festive Boards were held in various hotels with the Porthcawl Hotel and The Brentwood being the most frequently used. Despite a national shortage of bricks, the building was completed on time. The new Hall was dedicated on Monday 27th September 1965 and is now home to 6 Craft Lodges; 3 Royal Arch Chapters and 7 other Orders serving the Masonic needs of over 350 Brethren. Porthcawl Freemasons will be holding Open Days on Saturday 9th and 23rd September. The Masonic Hall will be open for viewing, there will be guided tours, talks on Freemasonry and display of Regalia. deputyship orders
MEDIATION AND COURT ATTENDANCE Mediation is an process for separating couples to attempt to resolve issues relating to children and/or financial matters without the stress and expense of attending court. It is easy to access mediation services. You can ask your solicitor to refer you to a mediator or you can contact the mediator direct. The mediator will usually offer you an initial appointment alone, this is known as a “MIAM” (Mediation Information Assessment Meeting) at which you can discuss the process and make a decision about whether mediation is going to work for you. If you are happy to proceed, you will then be invited to an appointment with your former partner during which you will attempt to resolve your issues with the assistance of the mediator. Hopefully you will resolve your issues during the mediation process, but if this is not possible, then you may have to make an application to the court. In the majority of cases, applicants to court have to show evidence of the fact that they attended a MIAM. Figures obtained by National Family Mediation (“NFM”) following a Freedom of Information request appear to show that in 2016 over 60 % of couples ignored the MIAMs requirement. Of nearly 90,000 applications for private law proceedings to a family court, only 35,627 had followed the MIAM process. NFM has queried whether solicitors are encouraging clients to exempt themselves from mediation and whether the courts are properly monitoring applications or using their powers to direct separating couples to attend a MIAM. The removal of legal aid for family disputes has caused a reduction in the people attending mediation. However, mediation can be a cost effective alternative to court based alternatives as it usually enables parties to reach agreement sooner and without the stress of attending court. A deputyship order gives you the ability to make decisions on behalf of someone who has lost the capacity to care for and make decisions for themselves. You might apply for a deputyship order when there is no lasting power of attorney (or enduring power of attorney) in place. A Lasting Power of Attorney can only be granted if the donor is considered as having capacity. The lack of capacity may be because of any impairment of or disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain, such as dementia or a stroke. The Court of Protection’s deputyship order will set out the deputy’s powers. the powers may relate, for example, to the person’s finances, property or accommodation (including where they live or whether they go into care), their medical treatment and other healthcare issues, and their personal welfare, eg: what clothes they wear, and anything needed for their general care and well-being. The powers given depend on the person’s needs. The Court may allow you to recover the fees from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A deputy must be over 18 and is often a family member or friend, although anyone can apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed. The proposed deputy completes a set of application forms and a suitable practitioner (eg the patient’s doctor) completes a medical report. An application fee is payable. You can employ a professional adviser to help you with the application and with your duties as a deputy (once appointed). Their fees can normally be recovered from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A professional deputy can be appointed if there are no suitable other persons. A court hearing is not normally required, provided there is no objection to the application. Deputies can be reimbursed reasonable and legitimate expenses, such as telephone calls, travel and postage. If these exceed £500, they may have to explain why. A deputyship ends automatically if the person lacking capacity recovers or dies. If the person becomes able to make their own decisions, the deputyship order stays in force until it expires or is discharged by another Court order. A deputy who cannot, or does not want to, remain a deputy must apply to the Court to have their order discharged. The Court can also discharge a deputy who it believes has acted improperly, eg not in the person’s best interests.

NEWTON WI
In June, we held our annual meeting, our speaker was Ann Davies the Federation Chairperson – what a lovely lady. We then elected the Committee Officers for 2017/18. Also in June, some of our members enjoyed a pleasant and educational trip to Lacock National Trust Village and on to Chippenham for some well earned Retail Therapy and lunch. It was so nice that four members of Ogmore Vale WI also joined our party. In our August meeting, we will have a themed Pudding Club Tea, a novel twist from the traditional Cream Tea. In September, we hope to visit Norton House in Mumbles for lunch and a Fashion Show and our speaker for the September WI meeting will be Steven Jarvis – ‘Naughty but Nice’. Sounds Interesting! As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124
The July meeting commenced with a very important announcement. One of our members: Dianne Reybould, has been awarded the B.E.M. (British Empire Medal) in the Queens Birthday Honours list, for her dedicated services to ‘Cancer Care’. Many congratulations to Dianne, we are all very proud of her achievements. The guest speaker this month was Jane James. She gave a very interesting talk on her years working in the different departments of the BBC. Her last post was as ‘News Reader’, until her retirement in 2012. After which Jane took on the roll of High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan, for one year, in which she was the Queens Representative at various Ceremonies. On June 14th we held our Summer Tea. The tables looked beautiful and the food delicious, thanks to members and Committee for the wonderful spread. Also to the Drama Group for their hilarious entertainment. Also held in June was the Glamorgan Federation Garden Party, at Margam Orangery, which gave us all the opportunity to dress up and wear our best hats. The weather was perfect as was the afternoon. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Our monthly meeting was on 11th July in the Talbot Centre; our new time is 2pm. Apologies from our President and Secretary who were absent due to illness. Christine read out the minutes and Enid our treasure signed them off. Correspondence read out and the annual summer trip finalised. We’re all looking for fine weather on August 8th, as were all going on an open top bus around Cardiff. Tea and biscuits then our speaker Mrs Yvonne Rees told us about her very feisty aunty from Clacton-on-Sea, who she visited on a regular basis until she died. And the efforts she had to go to trying and succeeding to purchase through a family auction pieces of furniture and china her aunty had wished her to have after her death. She had brought several pieces of china with her and we all agreed her efforts were well rewarded. No speaker next month our annual trip but in September our speaker is Mr. David Alexander, his topic is King Mongkut and a Difficult Woman from Rhyl, we can’t wait, as it seems very intriguing. Call in and you can hear Mr Alexander for yourself, well supply the tea and biscuits. Christine Callaghan

Finance BUSINESS PROPERTY RELIEF AND INHERITANCE TAX Where circumstances permit, the Inheritance Tax (IHT) efficiency of a will can be maximised by leaving assets that qualify for 100% Business Property Relief (BPR) directly to your children. If it is not desirable to leave such assets directly, an alternative approach would be to leave the business assets in a trust, as a chargeable transfer, where your children are the beneficiaries. As the assets have a zero value for IHT purposes, there will be no IHT charge on the transfer into the trust. If the intention is to leave business assets to the surviving spouse, and finances permit, a further IHT strategy could be considered. This involves leaving the business assets to your children, IHT exempt, and for the spouse to purchase these assets subsequently. The children would then have the cash value of the business without suffering any IHT loss. The business assets would re-qualify for BPR after the spouse had owned them for a further two year period. These assets could then be left to the children, again, in the surviving spouse’s will. Your children could therefore inherit an unlimited value of business assets twice, and free from IHT on both occasions. Such planning obviously relies on the spouse having sufficient resources to fund the purchase. A variation on this theme would be to leave the business assets to a discretionary will trust and for the surviving spouse to purchase them, at arm’s length from the trustees. At One Life Financial Planning Ltd we work closely with a team of legal and accountancy professionals to formulate a plan that would be specifically designed to meet your needs. If you would like further information or general advice on inheritance tax planning, please do not hesitate to contact us.
He also found that, although he couldn’t cut the cost of his life assurance, especially as he wanted to increase the size of the cover due to the extra borrowing, he was in fact able to get the cover with a different company, where the cost per thousand pounds of cover was cheaper, hence well worth an application to see whether, after underwriting, he could save money. The moral of the story is simple – ask the question and you could save substantially each month on two vital outgoings. Call 01656 782545 for an adviser to provide you with a free quote. WHY WOULD YOU PAY MORE? I have never failed to wonder why anyone would wish to pay more than necessary for a vital item or service. Sometimes it’s down to apathy, that you can’t be bothered to look elsewhere, other times it’s because you perhaps are unaware that what you’re looking to buy can be found cheaper elsewhere. Now, this isn’t to say that cheap is always the best option because it also depends on the quality and service that you receive. However, when it comes to mortgages and life assurance, the competitive environment in which we live these days very often does mean that you can get exactly what you want at a time when the market for these has never offered better value for money. A client of ours recently spoke with an Adviser about borrowing more money to do an extension on his house. His current mortgage deal (£72,300 outstanding) had ended some months ago but he’d never looked to renew with a cheaper package. When it came to working out what it would cost to borrow the extra on top of the mortgage, he was amazed when the Adviser told him that he could borrow the amount owing on the mortgage as well as the extra £25,000 for the extension, for £80 less than he was already paying. If he hadn’t wanted to borrow the extra money, he would most likely have continued to just pay what he was paying. Seaside News | 44

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB It is still possible to sow some last rows of lettuces. I’m told rocket and crops such as Pak Choy prefer cooler conditions and will be less likely to “bolt”. Any late crops sown during August will need protection as it gets cooler. Many of the crops are ready to harvest during August and September and it is a priority to keep picking, we deadhead flowers to encourage more blooms, so it is with vegetables. Tomatoes need care as the plants start to fruit. Tomato plants can produce lots of leaves so it is important to thin the excessive growth to encourage fruit production. The preparations for our annual show is underway the ‘Show Schedule’ has been printed and circulated amongst members. The show date for your diaries - Saturday 2nd September. The work on the garden patio in Cliff Cottage Gardens is almost complete with new “wheelchair access” although the circular flower beds will need re-planting. Whilst pickling shallots I wondered what was the difference was between onions and shallots? Shallots, like onions and garlic are members of the allium family but their flavour is richer. Like garlic, they grow in clusters, to substitute one for the other in recipes, use half the amount of shallot that you would onion. Gwen Bradford

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY Again this year the club was invited to participate in the Music and Flower Festival at All Saints Church. The theme of the Festival was “Musicals” Several club members demonstrated their skills in interpreting titles from West End shows. The two photographs, sent by Mr David Wooding, show Joseph and his Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat done by club chairman Ann Butler and Phantom of the Opera created by Brenda Rees. Members of the public were entertained with music interludes, two flower demonstrations given by club tutor, Maureen Fargie and club member, Anne Evans. Lesley Dearn, a local artist, exhibited some of her work. Refreshments were available. Donations were for The Mayor of Porthcawl’s charity. The church was beautifully decorated and appreciated by the visitors who thoroughly enjoyed this popular annual event. Mair Stockford
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB August the 5th-11th is National Smile Week; I hope your garden is so beautiful it’s making you smile! Though, as usual, there is lots to be done to keep it that way. Time to give your hedges a final trim as they won’t grow much after this month, easy with a power trimmer except (there is always an except!) large leave hedges like laurel, these need to be cut with a pair of secateurs, a power trimmer cuts through large leaves causing the edges to go brown which is unattractive, tiresome, but worth it! Collect seeds from your favourite annuals, these should be kept in a cool dry place, the bottom of the fridge is ideal! Aphids are prevalent this month especially on roses, ladybirds love em! If you find one put it on your rose bush, two jobs in one – full up ladybirds and happy flowers! Black spots on tomatoes is calcium deficiency, try crushing up a few antacid tablets in the soil round them (Rennies are great and they won’t get indigestion) Did you know – Heinz tomato Ketchup has a speed limit? If it pours at more than 0.028mph it’s considered too runny and rejected! Chris Early

Health KEEPING YOUR CHILDREN’S SIGHT IN THE FRAME Good eyesight is vital for children as their vision helps them explore and learn about the world around them. In fact, up to 80 per cent of everything they learn at school is presented visually so being able to see clearly is important for their overall development. Regular check-ups are the best way to make sure your child’s eyesight is as good as it should be, or that any problems are picked up and treated before they have an impact on their education. Claire Edwards, director of Specsavers in Porthcawl, said: ‘Poor eyesight can cause learning and behavioural problems, which might be blamed on other things. This is especially true for young children, who may find it difficult to explain the problems they are having with their eyesight. They might not even be aware they have a problem at all. That’s why we recommend that all children have an eye test before they start school. They don’t need to be able to read, our opticians have lots of other ways to assess their eyesight.’ Problems such as squints or lazy eye (amblyopia) can be treated more effectively the earlier they are picked up. This can make a huge difference to your child and their education. Specsavers has also teamed up with Thompson Screening and scientists at City University, London, to develop Screening for Schools. The scheme offers free vision screening software for children in every primary and secondary school across the UK. The screening software can be used by teaching staff or volunteers and identifies potential eyesight problems. A report is sent home to parents or carers so they know if a more thorough eye examination is needed. If your child’s school is not signed up to the scheme, discuss it with a teacher. They can visit specsavers.co.uk/screeningforschools to sign up. Children under the age of 16 are entitled to an eye test every two years, or sooner if recommended by an optician, through the NHS and a voucher towards the cost of glasses. Specsavers offers a range of complete glasses (including frames and lenses) for the value of the NHS voucher. However, at Specsavers in Porthcawl we go one step further and give children a second pair, absolutely free. RIGHT EFFORT Right Effort is the deeper process of releasing from the grip of presenting unwholesome reaction and thought. Technically speaking it involves preventing the arising of un-arisen unwholesome states, abandoning unwholesome states that have already arisen, to arouse wholesome states that have not arisen and to maintain and perfect wholesome states already arisen. These four descriptions are dynamic and the perfection of such a process requires knowledge of what the problem is and the meditative solution. Unwholesome - Anger, Jealousy, Revenge, Hatred, Spitefulness, losing oneself, unchecked desire. Personal example - Anger has arisen in this mind. This anger is seething and burning. Lots of retaliatory images arise in the mind and they return very quickly. There is a dis-connect from the world around me. Pain or numbness is felt in the stomach area. Right Effort, directs us, we must do something to provide mind / body safety. The instruction here is to prevent new arising angry thoughts and then to abandon existing angry thoughts. Doctrine provides meditative guidelines to assist in those inner moments. Many prescriptions exist, too many to mention here. Ask yourself do you have a strategy? If you can let go of the unwholesome. Write about it, cherish it, its your best friend! You have arrived at right effort.... If you’re struggling tune in, meditative solutions to anger exist. Neville Evans
BEETROOT AND ANTI-AGEING Beetroot is high in natural nitrates, which are converted to nitrites and then to nitric oxide (NO). NO has been shown to improve exercise performancein people of different ages. In a recent study researchers from the Wake Forest University looked at the effect of beetroot juice shots on brain function in older people. The study included 26 men and women aged 55 and older who did not exercise, had high blood pressure, and took no more than two medications for high blood pressure. Half the participants received a beetroot juice shot (Beet-It) containing 560mg of nitrate one hour before exercise, three times a week for six weeks; the others received a placebo shot with very little nitrate. Results showed that the group drinking the Beetroot juice shot before exercise showed a significantly enhanced motor function, compared to the placebo group as well as increased brain connectivity comparable to that seen in younger adults. Arts RAISING THE ROOF
St Mary’s Church has been a beacon for Harrow and the surrounding area west of London for over nine centuries. Help is urgently needed for essential repairs to the roof, so it was to Harrow on the Hill and Harrow School, at the behest of Owain Arwel Hughes and the Fundraising Friends of St Marys, that the call was answered by Bridgend Male Choir. A tremendous and well received concert on an incredibly hot and humid night where the Choir, supported by the Lewis-Merthyr Band and conducted by the maestro, enthralled an audience of over 500 with a repertoire, mostly Welsh but, then we are a formidable Welsh choir. The audience were ecstatic on hearing Amen sung with such passion and awe. A standing ovation followed which can only enhance the Choir’s reputations over the border. With a large Welsh or Welsh related crowd and Harrowvarians all were well pleased with evening’s performance and departed for home with a glow in their hearts and a song on their lips. Audience and performers were well satisfied. Job done and a few more coins in Aid of St Mary’s Roof Fund coffers. Amen. G Hopkins
ART IN FOCUS This month the focus is on a single artwork: ‘The Painter’s Brother, Stephen’, (1985-6) by Lucien Freud, the grandson of Sigmund Freud. Although only a small piece this still has the power to hold your gaze and stop you in your tracks. The paint is visceral and heavily impasto creating an unflattering, but piercingly acute portrayal of Freud’s brother. The two were renowned for not getting on and Lucien was very demanding when it came to doing his portraits, insisting that the sitter be with him over a succession of months, sometimes stretching over a year, sitting night after night or day after day. Freud worked incessantly and was an incredibly intense person to be around. Many of his female sitters fell in love with him because of this. However, in this work we get a sense of unnerving uncomfortableness. Stephen’s gaze is resolute, yet also seems to ask ‘why do we carry this on?’ Is he referring to the painting or their dislike of each other? Whichever, it is a compelling piece! This astounding work of art can be seen at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. For more information email: josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Digressing from the world of film, July was a busy month for my whodunit novel, “The Tidal Road Mystery”, for I had a week’s holiday in South Devon, where the story is set. I took the chance to do a door-to-door leaflet drop in Aveton Gifford (re-named Watersford in the book) and the village shop quickly sold out of the first batch of copies and had to be supplied with more. I followed this up with a promotional tour of bookshops in Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth and Tavistock. Meanwhile, Porthcawl resident Ruth Birch kindly sent me her own review after reading it, and I was pleased that she said she was kept guessing until the very end, and finished by saying “the methods employed by Erwin (the detective) to solve the case reminded me of a joyous mix of Poirot and Miss Marple”. I was delighted that it was compared to Agatha Christie. Perhaps it has something to do with the South Devon atmosphere! Another reader said he was awaiting the second book in the series. “The Seagull Bay Mystery” should be out later this year. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films Tel: 07510 934299 Picture: the book cover
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Well, it’s all roads to Newton Green on Saturday 26th August for the Newton Beer and Pop Festival. It kicks off at 12 noon and nearly a dozen bands will be performing, including: South Road, Tom King, Greasy Rats, The 1990s and Shy Warrior. The charity event takes months of setting up and Steve Maitland Thomas and the gang beg, steal and borrow to make it happen, not forgetting the volunteers and groups who all give their services free. Yours truly will be there with my minders, so don’t be shy about having a selfie because I won’t bite! Another date for your diary is Saturday 2nd September, the Big Family Day on the green at The Seagull, Rest Bay. If it rains, the event will move inside the pub. There’s a BBQ, bouncy castle and two great acts, duo The Overheated Pilots and the brilliant Cover Sluts, who I saw in action recently at a jammed Cabin Bar and were on top form. My song-writing partner of over 30 years, Daley B Williams, was over from the Czech Republic on a visit in July, and myself and Dale will be releasing a “Best Of” CD this year. Bridgend Male Choir has added to its reputation, first made in Wells Cathedral two years ago when it appeared in St Cuthbert’s, the largest parish church building in Somerset. The church is so big and with such a prominent position, in the heart of the city of Wells, visitors often think they have reached the Cathedral as they arrive through the medieval entrance porch. This then was the setting for the concert with its wonderful acoustics and the helpful staff. The audience in St. Cuthbert Church, in this sleepy Somerset city, listened in awe to the performance given. It was indeed inspiring not only to the listeners but also motivated the choir to a new pinnacle of sound. A concert performed and simply delivered. The money raised, in this case well in excess of £1200, by such events enables St Margaret’s Hospice, Taunton to pay for specialist care in its out patients units, respite care their Sunflower Day centres, a home visit by one of its specialist nurses, specialist counselling for a child who has lost a parent, and hours of telephone support from a nurse in the middle of the night. AHNUH VALENTINE’S MONTHLY BLOG Local songstress from Bridgend, Ahnuh Valentine, has been in London recently recording new music for her upcoming album alongside her producer Phil Braithwaite; guitarist for stunning violinist Vanessa May. Ahnuh is hoping to release the new material as an album in early 2018; a sequel to her first album ‘Leather and Lace’ which features four songs written by Ahnuh and Phil. The album will also feature songs from ‘Ahnuh Acoustic’, a playlist on her Sound Cloud where Ahnuh puts a unique twist on songs such as Guns N Roses’ – Welcome to the Jungle and Prodigy’s – Firestarter… to name a few! Also, for those that followed Ahnuh throughout her London Marathon fundraising with her father Steve Richmond, the pair have raised over £7000 for MQ: Transforming Mental Health. For a full list of upcoming events and to find out when Ahnuh is singing near you head to www.ahnuhvalentine.com. You will also find a link to her Sound Cloud and many live videos.

‘HAWL I FYW’ – A CONCERT OF WELSH MUSIC After their success at the National Eisteddfod last year, a concert has now been organised by Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl, (Welsh Learners’ Choir), at Gilgal Baptist Church, Park Avenue, Porthcawl on 11th September at 7.30pm. Joining forces with ‘Cantorion Coety’, the two choirs will present an evening of Welsh music, including the song, ‘Hawl i Fyw’, (‘The Right to Live’). This song was composed by Dafydd Iwan in 1984 to raise awareness of the famine in Ethiopia at that time. Both choirs will perform on this occasion to raise money for the current famine in East Africa. The guest soloist will be Tomi Turner, (tenor and harpist) and the Porthcawl Choir’s Handbell Ringers will also perform. Ticket cost £5. Further details will follow in the next issue of Seaside News. Sport RUNNERS CONTINUE TO THRIVE
Training for October’s Cardiff Half Marathon is now well underway for the Porthcawl Runners. The club, though, also continue to thrive in various events – probably none more so than relay racing where they’re a force to be reckoned with. That relay pedigree was demonstrated once again at the recent Cosmeston Relays in Penarth where the trio of Dave Bennett, Deb Goule and Mike Furness reigned supreme in the mixed category, featuring 35 teams. That latest success followed hot on the heels of the club’s successful hosting of its 4km Time Trial relay event in the Bridgend County Running League. The Runners used home seafront surroundings to their advantage to record a stunning second-place finish overall. Meanwhile the club also boasted a healthy turnout at June’s Swansea Half Marathon with some excellent performances on the day. In other news, the second Couch to 5K group of 2017 have now finished their nine-week programme and many, like the first group in January, have joined the club as full members – and have been racking up personal bests on a weekly basis in the Porthcawl parkrun. The Runners are a friendly club that cater for all running abilities. For info about joining email secretary@porthcawlrunners.com

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS With the summer holidays now upon us, hopefully we’re having a good spell of weather to keep the sea nice and warm. Let’s hope for long sunny days to enjoy our beautiful coastline. We are often asked when people want their children to join the club “What will my child get out of it?” Well, firstly, it gives them an awareness of water safety and how to respect the water. This could be a lifesaver for them, or someone else if an incident occurred, so is potentially priceless. They also get a good workout, which increases their fitness levels, and hopefully leads to a lifetime of enjoying sport. All of this in a safe, supervised, but challenging environment. However, what they most get is fun and enjoyment. They say “a picture can paint a thousand words” - well, this picture of one of our younger members, Neve, who is just 5 years old, must be making the word counter go crazy! If you or your kids fancy giving us a try, then go onto www.plgc.org.uk to find out a bit more. It may be the best decision you’ll make! Phil Protheroe Picture courtesy of Tamzine John

FOOTBALL FUN WITH PORTHCAWL ATHLETIC’S MINIS FESTIVAL! We at Porthcawl Athletic Football Club held our yearly ‘Minis Football Festival’ at Rest Bay on Sunday 2nd July. More than 58 teams aged 6-11, from all over South Wales, had a great time wowing the crowds with their football skills and teamwork! The friendly atmosphere was fuelled by our famous BBQ, strong coffee and ice cream. Those not participating had a chance to go on the bouncy castle, play golf or admire the amazing views of Rest Bay and the Red Arrows flying over! We would like to thank everyone who supported us in making it such a successful day and hope to see you again next year! Michelle Mitchell

Sport THANK YOU TO PORTHCAWL HEALTH AND FITNESS
A huge thank you to Porthcawl Health and Fitness for sponsoring and supporting Ethan Waters, who has been selected to represent u17’s Wales National Basketball Team. Ethan has taken full advantage of the gym’s great facilities and classes with the experienced instructors, in order to make the final squad, who will play three test matches against Ireland and then attend an Elite international camp later this month.
SKER LIFEGUARDS The club has had a busy start to the summer season. Nippers have been working hard towards their nipper lifesaver awards and have also attended two nipper carnivals in which they achieved two VERY respectable 3rd places. The juniors and seniors have also been studying for lifesaver awards. We’ve already had a dozen members pass their level 1 and we have a number of members looking to take their level 2 or 3 awards later this summer. Several of our juniors have just finished competing in the Welsh ranking series. This consisted of 3 separate competitions in which competitors took part in running, swimming, board and ski paddling events. Well done to all members that took part, but special congratulations to Will James, Amber Williams and Hannah Davidson who have been selected to represent the Welsh youth team this July in Cornwall. All this and the summers only just starting. Well done all! Steve Williams 07884 194373

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT This month has seen the summer flat spell but with a small 1.5ft swell arriving mid month of July in the morning. The waves are so small they really need an offshore breeze to hold them up smooth and steep to get any kind of ride on a long board. The waves on the morning tides did just this but, by the afternoon tide the light winds had swung around onshore, crumbling the lip and face of the small waves rolling in making them weak and barley rideable. This has been the pattern of the last few summer swells we have had these couple of months. I will say I think the water on our beaches is looking clearer every year and the white water looking whiter. That’s got to be good. David A. Batten www.tuskasurf.co.uk
