Dear Editor, What a difference a week makes. Just over a week ago (at the time of writing) I enjoyed my normal quiet walk along the beach, then today I am faced with large lorries and diggers playing in the sand building forts at Newton Point (behind the caravan park). Is this anything to do with the sea defence improvement? Is it going to extend the full length up to Coney beach? This new work takes up a considerable chunk of the beach just below the car park. Can anyone enlighten me as to what is going on, or is this just big boys playing with their toys. J Amos North Cornelly

EMYR’s KARAVAN4theKIDZ supports VELINDRE Dear Editor, Fantastic news, we have now raised GET £40,000 over £29,000 - thank you so, so, so TAR much to you kind people who have raised or donated recently - great effort and very generous! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. It wasn’t there for Emyr and others but we can change that now. Please run, walk, jump, dance, anything to help - Maybe donate instead of sending Christmas cards? The Jolly Sailor, Newton have kindly offered to donate monies raised from their Quiz on Wednesday nights throughout December - please join us if you can. Also, on Friday 15th December at the Stage Door Grand Pavilion - A Christmas Cabaret night with songs from West End stars. Tickets are £7 and available from Pietros Cafe, The Esplanade. Please visit our website to register or see upcoming events http:// www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900 493697. We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Huw Owen, Paul Downes & Christian Evans

BOOK OF THE MONTH A Column Of Fire By Ken Follett We return to Kingsbridge in the saga that started with The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End and which now continues with A Column of Fire. It is Christmas 1558, and young Ned Willard returns home to Kingsbridge to find his world has changed. The ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn by religious hatred. Europe is in turmoil as high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty and love, and Ned finds himself on the opposite side from the girl he longs to marry, Margery Fitzgerald. Be at the centre of English history as you follow Ned, Margery and many others, through a turbulent half century of battles and conflict from London to Edinburgh and Geneva to Paris.

local history WELSH MUSEUMS FESTIVAL
“Takeover Day gives hundreds of young people the chance not only to do something new and experience museums for the first time, but for their voices to be heard. It provides an opportunity for young people throughout Wales to talk about their heritage – to share concerns and imagine new futures. In challenging times, museums can act as the cement in our communities, bringing young people together to tell their stories. Put museums at the centre of our communities and young people at their heart, and we will all experience a richer, more vibrant culture which excites and enthrals everyone.” David Swidenbank
PORTHCAWL 1848 Museums across Wales celebrated and promoted Wales’s outstanding culture at this year’s Welsh Museums Festival from 28 October – 5 November 2017. Various events and exhibitions were on offer for the whole family from sleepovers to talks, from walks to re-enactments, from tea parties to Halloween themed activities. Taking the theme of ‘Be Amazed’ this year’s Welsh Museums Festival programme had something to cater for everybody’s taste. At Porthcawl Museum the week saw special archaeological events and activities, including an archaeological dig supported by the Glamorgan and Gwent archaeological Trust (GGAT). Children undertook a ‘dig’ in the garden of the museum using tools and instructions from Paul Huckfield of GGAT. Once they had uncovered finds they then had to clean, identify and record the finds before making them ready for display in the museums archaeology display. Volunteers from the museum produced Roman food, including Roman flat bread, cheesecake and honey cakes, which went down well with our stewards and the public on John Street. Finally visitors to the museum were able to view part of the Blundell archaeology collection for the first time. David Swidenbank
TAKEOVER DAY Porthcawl Museum took part in Takeover Day recently when four students from St Clare’s School in Porthcawl joined the museum volunteers for the day. Working with the museum’s recorder, Elaine Newman, they were guided through the process of how the museum collection is recorded, prepared and stored correctly. They also experienced the role of a museum steward providing a warm welcome to all the museum visitors and maintaining accurate day-to-day records. Takeover Day is a celebration of children and young people’s contribution to museums, galleries and historic homes. It’s a day on which they are given meaningful roles, working alongside staff and volunteers to participate in the life of the museum. Actor Michael Sheen, Kids in Museums Patron, says, 22 | seaside news
A hundred years ago, an article appeared in the Porthcawl News reminiscing about life in 1848. 1848, was a memorable year for the town, as it was the first time the name Porthcawl was officially used, alongside Newton and Nottage. It is interesting to note that the article boasts of a thriving port; with upwards of 25,000 tons of pig-iron and 23,000 tons of coal being shipped from the port, plus various railways in operation. It appears that, Porthcawl also offered opportunity for sea-bathing. Note - this description pre-dates the Brogden Dock and rail of 1865. Serving approximately 800 residents, there was only 1 bank, which was the National Provincial, (Nat West today) 2 blacksmiths, 3 shoe-makers, 2 butchers, 3 carpenters, 6 grocery dealers, 1 draper, 4 ship owners, 4 stone masons, 1 miller, 1 school, 3 tailors and 2 timber dealers. There were quite a few watering holes, frequented by sailors, but the article only refers to the Anchor, Ancient Briton, Crown, Ship, Ship and Castle and the Victoria. The rector of the Parish Church at St John’s, Newton was the Rev. Robert Knight and the Harbour Master was Lieutenant Warren Squire Bradley. The article ended, complimenting the town on becoming a fashionable resort. Ceri Joseph

The High School Musical auditions have successfully been completed. What a fantastic turnout! The talent this year was truly remarkable. We now have the final cast and rehearsals for the much anticipated school production have commenced! Brynteg will be performing at the Grand Pavilion Porthcawl during October 2018.
In other news, Year 13 art students from Brynteg were involved in exhibiting their artwork as part of the Made in Roath Arts Festival in Cardiff. The event was very popular and the Art Department was very proud to be showcasing such excellent work. Year 12 visited the University of South Wales in Pontypridd to take part in the Young Enterprise Event. Pupils delivered a Dragons Den style presentation to a team of judges and they were successfully awarded the prize for best presentation. Brynteg pupils were great ambassadors for the school.
A-Level pupils recently took part in CPR training as part of the British Heart Foundation restart a heart scheme. Restart a heart day is an initiative that aims to train as many people as possible in CPR. Currently 100 pupils have received training. I am sure you will agree this is a great life skill to have. BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL RUGBY/ FOOTBALL TOUR
During the summer, 19 students and four members of staff set off on a trip of a lifetime to the USA! The first stop was Washington DC where the group played the first round of rugby and football matches of the tour. They also enjoyed visits to many National Monuments and the Lincoln, Vietnam and Second World War Memorials. The Washington experience was completed with visits to the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Museums before heading up the coast to Philadelphia where the final rugby match of the tour resulted in a victory. Following superb post-match hospitality from their American hosts the students progressed onto the final leg of the tour in The Big Apple! After an early start, the excited group headed out on an open bus tour of New York followed by a trip on the Subway to The Bronx, home of baseball The Yankee Stadium, to watch New York City take on Toronto. A trip to ‘The Top of the Rock’, afforded spectacular views of Manhattan and Central Park rounding off an incredible tour of America. The School would like to thank J&J Motors, Stephenson RC Frames, Broomfield & Alexander Ltd, Terry Reffell and Ken James for their kind sponsorship.

NEWS FROM YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR It’s been another busy few weeks at school. Year 1 and 2 children enjoyed a lovely day out at St Fagan and took part in some exciting workshops, learning all about toys. Year 4 have had a short course of intensive swimming sessions and it’s been fantastic to see their confidence and skills develop. A very successful Book Fayre was held at school – our thanks to Friends of YFOS for organising this event. The rugby squad took part in the Keith Grice Tournament at Porthcawl and we would like to congratulate everyone on their efforts and on playing so well. Anti-bullying week was launched with a special assembly, followed by activities including a Wear Odd Socks Day to raise awareness of this very important issue. We also held a Spots and Stripes Day to raise money for Children in Need. Thank you to everyone for their contributions. Year 6 travelled to Ysgol Gyfun Llangynwyd for their first transition day of this year and parents also had the opportunity to visit the school during an open evening. RECYCLING WORKSHOPS AT PIL PRIMARY
CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL On November 12th, Cefn Cribwr held its’ annual Remembrance Service at Wesley Chapel before moving to the new War Memorial. During the service, pupils from the school placed a wreath for each man from the village who fell in either the First or Second World War. Despite the wind and rain there were a very large number of people there. School Governors have looked at our work whilst they conducted a ‘Learning Walk’. They visited our classrooms and spoke to pupils about what we have been learning. There have been a lot of visitors to school these past few weeks, including the Welsh Ambulance Service, PC Beaumont and the Recycling Workshop Team. We have all been excited about learning Spanish with Miss Edwards from Cynffig School. We have all enjoyed our weekly Rugby and Netball matches. You can keep up with a great deal of what we do in Cefn Cribwr Primary School by following our twitter account @cefncribwrps Aaliyah, Ellie and Olivia

ADA Training visited KS2 pupils to deliver workshops to encourage pupils to ‘Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Repair and Recycle’. The pupils worked collaboratively in groups to answer questions on how long different household items take to decompose. Pupils were very surprised at the findings! They were even more shocked to discover what recycled materials could be re-used for. Year 6 pupils explained what they learnt, Mia said, “The ozone layer is being destroyed because of chemical fumes from burning plastic and rubber materials.” Jayden and Ffion found out that, “The temperature in the Artic is increasing because of global warming, the ice is melting and the water levels are rising.” Callum said, “I learnt a lot from the workshops and found them very interesting.” While, Corey said, “We all need to look after our planet more, to protect wildlife and future generations.” N Pryce Head Teacher

It’s been a very busy time at West Park and we’ve been quiet the last few issues! Early Years & Foundation Phase has begun learning through the Minibeast Theme. They had a fantastic Discovery Day at the start of the topic and are looking forward to a visit from the Minibeast Safari! Key Stage 2 is having an extraterrestrial time learning through the Space theme. After a fantastic trip to We Are Curious in Bristol they had an exciting visit from the Techniquest Starlab team who fed their imaginations with some amazing stargazing. Year 5 and 6 went to Theatre Nanog where they watched a thought provoking performance ‘Eye of the Storm’. The play focused on a young carer who followed her dreams to become a scientist. The children had the opportunity to design and make tornadoes, learnt about hurricanes and volcanoes and visited the Museum. Thank you to Mrs Lewis for delivering the Walk Through The Bible program with Year 4. Year 6 began transition with Porthcawl Comprehensive. They
Huge congratulations goes to Darryen Champion in year 2 who was an area runner up in the 2017 Christmas Stamp competition. It was an amazing achievement because out of 205,928 entries, only two children won in Wales. During our weekly celebration assembly, Darryen was presented with his framed Christmas stamp design and certificate. He also won a £100 for himself and £100 for school. Mrs John, our Head, was thrilled and Darryen is now going to help her buy something out of the money so that all the children in school can enjoy. Karen Williams (Learning support assistant)

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL MYNYDD CYNFFIG PRIMARY SCHOOL
The youth of today are so often maligned and criticised and seldom given the praise that they deserve. At Porthcawl Comprehensive School however, I am delighted to report that following an exhaustive five days of commitment, enthusiasm and energy on the part of our students, the Head Team raised almost £4000 during Charities’ Week, and money is still coming in. As each day went by, the fundraising gathered momentum with the keenly anticipated fancy dress day for Children in Need on Friday 17th November again being the pinnacle of the week. As well as the old favorites like I’m a Teacher…Get me out of here! The Great British Bake Off, the Lip Synch Battle and Strictly Come Dancing, pupils also introduced Sponge the Teacher. All events were performed to packed out audiences of delighted pupils. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our pupils and staff for contributing so wholeheartedly to this campaign and congratulate our extraordinary young people on raising this impressive amount of money for charity. Chosen charities this year, as well as Children in Need, include the Sandville, Porthcawl Stroke Club, Trinity Care and Support, Follow Your Dreams, Velindre, Girlguiding, PSPA, Action on Hearing Loss, Macmillan and the RNLI. Tickets for our 40th consecutive school show, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ are on sale at the Grand Pavilion – 01656 815995. The show runs from 24th– 27th January and tickets start from as little as £6. The production showcases our school at its absolute best, with parents, pupils and staff working together with the common goal of producing as professional show as possible. Thank you to everyone for your commitment and dedication. It will not disappoint! Please remember our Carol Service is at 7pm on 21st December at All Saints Church – you are most welcome. Mynydd Cynffig Primary School is celebrating a very positive report from ESTYN having recently been inspected. The Inspection Team confirmed that the school is a happy, nurturing and inclusive community, which supports pupils’ wellbeing effectively. Standards in teaching and pupil behavior are good and pupils’ wholehearted participation in expressive arts lessons is excellent. Nearly all pupils achieve well and make good progress with a few achieving beyond expectations by the end of key stage 2 through a rich range of stimulating learning experiences. The school is considered to have good prospects for improvement due to the fact that Governors, senior leaders and curriculum teams work productively to address key priorities. The Inspection Team also recognised that there are successful systems in place to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Head Teacher - Neil Davies said “There are so many pleasing comments which reflect the hard work and dedication of the pupils, staff, Governors, parents and members of the community who together make our school so successful. I am very proud of what we have achieved so far as a Primary School and we will continue to ensure our pupils receive an innovative and exciting curriculum in the years ahead.” The school currently has a Welsh Government Green 1A categorisation and is also a Curriculum Pioneer school. THE POPPIES ARE PILING IN! Teenage textile enthusiasts from Porthcawl Comprehensive School are aiming to make 2000 fabric poppies for a vibrant commemorative installation which will take centre stage at Wonderwool Wales at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells on April 28th and 29th, 2018. It’s the first community textiles project that the school has contributed to and it involves around 31 Year 7 Textiles Club members. These poppies will be strung together with others from all over the UK to form a ‘Curtain of Poppies’ to commemorate the end of WW1. Organiser Jane Veevers is aiming to collect 887,858 – one for each person from the UK who died serving their country. Another South Wales group already involved are Bridgend’s Tenovus Craft Group. poets corner OUR PAST AND FUTURE KING
God’s prophets would tell of a past and future king That from the depths of heaven, in the fullness of time would spring The Christ child born of a virgin, in a manger would be laid Worship from His angels, shepherds and wise men would be made But what was so special about this meek and lowly child He was sent that man and God could once again be reconciled His mission was to come and seek and save the lost This unmerited gift of redemption, would be bought at tremendous cost Being made in human likeness and appearance as a man Immanuel “God with us” came to fulfill His fathers plan He would show love, mercy and kindness, bring words of truth and light Break the chains of sin and darkness, and restore to man his sight The storm He would make silent, the lepers He would heal The hungry in their thousands, would be provided with a meal He would heal the broken hearted, raise people from the dead But man would then reject Him, and to the cross He would be led However, death could never hold Gods son, and from the grave He would arise The power of His resurrection, bringing salvation as His prize The gulf between God and man now bridged, the King of kings has been revealed Your relationship to God the father, through Jesus can be healed So please take time this season, to consider Jesus, our past and future king The Alpha and Omega, the Lord of everything. The night we met it was by chance. It started with a little glance. We sat and talked the night away. The rain came down but didn’t stay. We fell in love so easily. We married and were happy. Our family came and gave us joy. We were blessed by boy, girl, boy. We’ve travelled lots to different lands Enjoying many happy plans. Our family grew with the passing of time The grandchildren are simply sublime. We are blessed in many ways And seize each moment of our days. We walk and swim to keep us fit, Embracing every part of it. The sun is out and we’re relaxed. If clouds gather, we let them pass. Loving life and having fun Is medicine for everyone. Christmas laughter, And Christmas cheers, Christmas meals, With Christmas beers. Christmas girls, And Christmas boys, Christmas happiness, With Christmas full of joys. Christmas faith, With Christmas full of hope, Christmas with sadness, When you’re unable to cope. Christmas memories, Of those we love, Christmas thoughts, To our loved ones up above. CENTIPEDE
Centipedes are people with lots and lots of legs. If they see a dew drop, they drain it to the dregs. They live among old piles of junk like our discarded shelves And feed on little creatures even smaller than themselves. They work all hours that they can find; there is no time to lose, They must earn lots of money to pay for all their shoes. They work till late on Christmas Eve, and never stop to sup, Because it takes them half the night to hang their stockings up. So when you’re at your leisure and feel you want to shirk Just spare a thought for people who have to stay and work. Bob Davies North Cornelly

I LOVE YOU WALES
In winter, when your mountains huddle deep within an overcoat of snow. Waterfalls suspended, sparkling curtains of white ice. Trees sway, united by the breeze, waving mistletoe pompoms, A choreographed team of skeletal cheerleaders. I cwtch beside the roaring fire as evening gathers in. I read some Dylan Thomas, nibbling Welsh cakes …fruity…sweet. I love you Wales. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

TOURISM TAX WOULD COST WELSH BAVO CELEBRATES VOLUNTEERS’ ACHIEVEMENTS AT AWARDS CEREMONY JOBS
Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations recently held their annual Bridgend County Borough Volunteer Achievement Awards 2017 at the Heronston Hotel in Bridgend, to celebrate the commitment of people who give their time freely to provide a wide range of services to many communities in Bridgend County Borough. BAVO’s Chief Executive, Heidi Bennett said: “Volunteers make a real difference to charities and ultimately to people’s lives and we were delighted to be able to recognise their hard work and achievements. BAVO is proud and privileged to be able to host this event again this year and my thanks go to our generous sponsors and donors who have made this celebration possible.” Awards and ‘Highly Commended’ certificates were presented to volunteers and organisations for Befriending and Mentoring Volunteer of the Year (sponsored by Valleys to Coast), Volunteer of the Year Award under 25 (sponsored by Graham Paul Accountants), Volunteer of the Year Award over 25, Trustee of the Year Award, Charity Shop Volunteer of the Year Award, Sports Volunteer of the Year Award, Volunteer Project of the Year Award (sponsored by United Graphic Design) and Outstanding Volunteer Contribution Award (sponsored by Handelsbanken). PORTHCAWL MAYOR’S COMMUNITY FUND The Mayor of Porthcawl chooses their charities for the year. This years’ Mayor Cllr. Lorrie Desmond-Williams has chosen for her charities the Porthcawl Sea Cadets, Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution and the Porthcawl Museum. All needing financial assistance. The Mayor’s Community Fund are looking for some additional members who would like to give a few hours a week to supporting the Mayor in helping to arrange fundraising events for local charities. Visit Wales has designated 2018 The Year of the Sea and a series of themed events will take place to attract tourists to our coastline. This suits us well in Porthcawl where a seaside-based tourism industry has long been established catering for everyone from day trippers to those staying in the resort’s many guest houses and hotels plus one of the largest caravan parks in Europe. However, there is a fly in the ointment. For while Visit Wales is the part of Welsh Government tasked with promoting tourism. That same government is considering imposing a tourism tax on all holiday accommodation. Welsh Government was recently given tax-raising powers and ministers are looking at different options. Welsh Conservatives are leading the fight against this new tax because Wales will be the only part of the UK which levies this, and it will put our tourism businesses at a severe disadvantage if people can stay in Cornwall, the Lake District or Scotland without paying this tax. There are 242,000 jobs in Wales dependent on tourism so I urge everyone to join this fight. GIRLS ATTITUDES The 2017 Girls’ Attitudes Survey published by the Girl Guides is the result of questions asked, on a range of issues, of 1900 girls, aged from 7 to 21 from across the UK. The survey revealed some interesting insights, which require us to reflect on the attitudes promoted amongst today’s young girls. Although a lot of progress has been made in tackling gender stereotypes, 55% of those surveyed said that these stereotypes affect their ability to say what they think. This number is higher than one might expect in 21st century Britain and shows that we need to address building the confidence of girls so they feel able express their opinions. Another section of the survey revealed that 75% of girls were confident in their IT skills, but only 37% would consider a technology job? The tech sector is growing rapidly and it is estimated that 2m skilled workers will be needed by 2020 so we cannot afford to waste such talent. There is clearly much still to be done to encourage girls to aspire to roles traditionally seen as male preserves. Building the confidence to express opinions and ask critical questions amongst girls is a task the Girl Guides relish. The empowering of girls to speak out and take on new roles and responsibilities remains a task the Guides survey has exposed as an ongoing priority. THANK YOU FOR YOUR RECYCLING EFFORTS
NEW BINS ON PORTHCAWL SEAFRONT TARGET DOG WALKERS
A very merry Christmas to you all, and a happy New Year. Following the launch of new collection procedures earlier this year, I’d like to thank all residents of Bridgend County Borough for their fantastic recycling efforts. Latest statistics are demonstrating that the new procedures are more than capable of helping us avoid fines and hit stringent new targets set by Welsh Government. Between April and June, almost 64 per cent of all waste collected from homes or taken to community recycling centres was recycled – a big increase on the same period last year, and an encouraging result. One aspect that has proven to be surprising is the number of homes wishing to take advantage of collections for disposable nappies and other absorbent hygiene products. With 8,000 homes signed up to the service, nearly 280 tonnes have been recycled instead of going into landfill. We’ve used a specialist plant to recycle cellulose fibres for fibre boards and acoustic panelling, and to reprocess other plastics. Updated results are currently being verified, and I am looking forward to bringing you more details very soon. In the meantime, don’t forget that you can check your Christmas and New Year collection arrangements at www.bridgend.gov.uk
There’ll be no excuses for not picking up after your pet following the introduction of 15 new bins along Porthcawl seafront. Funded by Porthcawl Town Council and serviced by Bridgend County Borough Council, the new bins have been provided following ‘The Big Scoop’, a three-month survey organised earlier in the year by Keep Wales Tidy and the Dogs Trust. After establishing a special dog walking route featuring a series of temporary bins, the survey recorded a 41 per cent increase in the number of owners who used the bins to get rid of pet waste. This underlines the importance of making sure that bins are placed where they are most needed, and I am really pleased that we have been able to work with the town council on this valuable initiative. On a national level, the survey revealed that 35 per cent of dog owners bag their dog’s waste, but don’t always bin it in a responsible manner. The new bins will hopefully make a big difference to this persistent problem, and encourage more owners to act responsibly. Finally, I hope all Seaside News readers enjoy a happy and peaceful Christmas, and a prosperous New Year – see you in 2018.

NOMINATE YOUR UNSUNG HEROES AT THE CITIZENSHIP AWARDS Do you know someone who regularly goes the extra mile for others, is an outstanding charity fundraiser, or has made efforts to help put their community on the map by achieving something special during 2017? As the year draws to a close, Councillor Pam Davies, Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, is inviting local residents to put forward nominations for individuals, groups and businesses that they think should be considered for a Mayor’s Citizenship Award. Organised by Bridgend County Borough Council, the awards are open to people who live in the county borough as well as local groups and businesses. Last year’s winners included a number of volunteers for good causes, fundraisers who collectively raised thousands of pounds, residents who have made special efforts to improve life within their communities and more. You can find out further details and download nomination forms by visiting the Mayor’s pages at www.bridgend.gov.uk All nominations must be received by Friday 26th January 2018, and the lucky winners will be recognised at an event hosted by the Mayor at the Civic Offices in March 2018. I hope you all enjoy a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year, and wish you the very best for 2018. club features DOG TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH
Harvey is an active 6-year-old Collie Cross. He is a gorgeous boy; however, he can be worried in new situations. He mixes well with dogs; he does prefer females to males so could live with a calm female already in the home. Harvey enjoys his exercise so he will need active owners who can take him for nice long walks and he loves to play with his toys. Harvey will need understanding owners who can take things slow and give him his space when needed, so he would suit a quiet home. He can live with children aged 14 and over. With time and patience he will make a lovely addition to your home. If you would like to know more about Harvey, then please contact Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219; or pop down to the centre at Court Colman CF31 4NG. You can also visit the website at www dogstrust.org.uk
REV. PAUL FLOE EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENT Friday 20th October saw an Evening of Entertainment in memory of the late Rev. Paul Floe, previous minister at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. The event was arranged by Larry Pearce, Elinor Davies and Steve Rogers to celebrate all that he meant to the town, and also raise funds to provide clean water for children and adults in disadvantaged areas. The evening consisted of a presentation on his impact on Porthcawl from church to rugby club, and his ability to enhance the lives of all those he met. This was followed by a short description of where the funds would be spent, providing clean water for children and adults in the Philippines via ‘Pump Wells’. This stops the children from using the polluted ground waters for washing and drinking, which carries the risk of eye infection and other illnesses. This was shown by Larry Pearce, a close friend of Rev. Floe and a local Lions Club member who visited the region in his capacity of UN and International Relations officer. There followed a communal singing of a special prayer song led by Emily, a young lady whom Rev. Floe had baptised during his ministry here. A raffle was held of prizes donated from local businesses who held Paul in high respect, followed by a superb buffet supplied by the Rugby Club of whom he had been Padre. The evening was rounded off with music from local group ‘The Sker Krows’. A most enjoyable evening in loving memory of the Rev. Floe which raised £1,100 - which will see at least three communities benefit from clean water. The organisers wish to thank all those who contributed in any way to the success of the evening. 40 | seaside news
CANCER CHARITY FOUNDER HONOURED WITH BEM
Porthcawl resident Diane Raybould has received the British Empire Medal (BEM) from The Lord Lieutenant of Mid Glamorgan, Mrs Kate Thomas CVO, for voluntary services to improve cancer care in the local and national community. Diane launched the charity Rhondda Breast Friends (RBF) in 2006, following the death of her daughter and her own diagnosis with breast cancer in 2002. She aimed to provide vital information and support for patients. The Charity worked with Interlink (WCVO) to set up the First Cancer Focus Group in the country. It was a force to be reckoned with as 40 national and local cancer and carer organisations worked in partnership: to give patients and carers a voice, improve services and influence healthcare providers in Cwm Taff. RBF also held the Welsh Government to account over 8 long years, relentlessly pursuing Implementation of their Welsh Cancer Standards through the Petition’s Committee. Patients’ stories were used to highlight non-compliance by LHB’s across Wales. Her hard work, tremendous drive and passion improved the lives of thousands of people with cancer and their families across Wales. She has changed attitudes and has left a legacy for years to come.
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH We should never assume that our celebrations of the advent season, when we prepare with anticipation for the coming of Christ, will appeal to everyone. The prophecy in Isaiah chapter 53 about the life and sufferings of Christ are enough to prompt the question: Is anybody really willing to celebrate and to follow a messiah of sorrows, who was acquainted with grief? The advent of Jesus is not just about his manger; it is also about his mission. A mission that would render him rejected by men and women and executed as a criminal. Where is the merriment in that? Those of us who celebrate not just the manger but the mission of Jesus are aware of this poignant paradox. Yet, still we joyfully celebrate the coming of Christ, for we acknowledge that suffering for the cause of God’s realm is redemptive in every sphere of life. In fact, the suffering of Jesus is not secondary but central to our celebration of Advent. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the congregation to wish you all a blessed advent and a peaceful Christmas. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Since taking over the rear building of the Talbot Community Centre when Scope left last year, we have been running a new project called Cwtch Cynffig. We had secured funding for a year to enable the previous group of disabled adults to continue being supported in this area. We provide therapeutic sessions of arts & crafts, cookery, health & wellbeing and music in a fun and caring environment run by an experienced facilitator assisted by a group of trained local volunteers. Each morning or afternoon session (run on Thursdays) costs £5 and an optional lunch is available on request. Our funders, the Garfield Weston Foundation have yet again shown their continued support by granting the Talbot another £15,000, which means we now have sufficient funds to continue the group for another two years – in total they have awarded the Talbot grants for £22,500! We have some fabulous festive sessions coming up at Cwtch Cynffig so why not come along for a trial session and join in the fun. For more information or to join us for a session contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher
PORTHCAWL U3A Members of Porthcawl U3A Walking Group recently explored Bedford Park at Cefn Cribwr. Based around the former 1780’s Ironworks established by John Bedford, the park is an interesting mix of industrial archaeology, rare plants and flowers – with local interest generated by the main footpath through the park being the original route of the old Dyffryn, Llynfi and Porthcawl Railway. Last month there was also a visit to Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan, with those attending enjoying a scrumptious afternoon tea served in the library after their guided tour. Christmas is almost upon us and the 530+ members of Porthcawl U3A are busy with many community focused festive events around our town. But our regular interest group meetings at venues across Porthcawl continue: they cover 42 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble - and in the new year we hope to add to the list with a ukulele group! We wish all our friends and fellow residents a happy and peaceful Christmas. Brian Thomas Secretary, Porthcawl U3A sec@porthcawlu3a.org www.porthcawlu3a.org
Early deadline reminder for January 2018 issue: Friday 8th December TRINITY CHURCH We have held two special services in November and have some further exciting events planned. On 5th we held a service to remember and give thanks for the lives of friends and family who have passed away. This was very moving for all who attended and candles were lit in memory of the Dear Departed. This was followed on 12th by a poignant Remembrance Service where poppy wreaths were laid and candles lit for those who gave their lives during the wars. The first Porthcawl Crib Festival will be held from 1st to 3rd December. Nativity cribs will be displayed from schools and Trinity members. We are also delighted to announce that Reverend Wynne Roberts will perform a special Christmas Elvis Concert on Friday December 22nd at 7pm. This will be free to everybody and his last concert was to a packed church. There will be a retiring collection for charity and this is sure to be a wonderful start to the Christmas weekend! The Junior Band and Saturday Teen’s disco have now commenced as well as monthly Bible Study. CUBS KEEPING THEIR WORLD TIDY!
1st Nottage Cubs Bear Pack showed great enthusiasm recently when armed with gloves, grabbers and rubbish bags. They did their best to clear as much of the rubbish that had been dropped or blown onto the grounds outside their scout hall, in a litter pick as part of their Our World challenge award that they have been working towards achieving. It was a beautiful day in Porthcawl late October, both in weather and kindness where NewLink Wales received a £750 donation for their Bridgend office (formerly known as DASH) from the Porthcawl Lions Club The money was raised from a talk given by Niall Ferguson. Niall, a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institute, Stanford, lives in the area when he’s in the UK and he wanted the funds to benefit local people who’ve fallen into difficulties. “It was his wish that money raised from the event be donated to a charity which he felt did good work in the community,” said Andrew Collier, President of the Porthcawl Lions group. “We can promise him that this money will be spent doing exactly that.” Said Clare Price, Bridgend Manager. “It will be put towards our self-help group who will really benefit from it.” Clare continues “The recent merger with NewLink Wales, a wellbeing charity, has made us stronger and better able to expand and deliver services tailored for our service user’s needs and we are extremely grateful to both the Porthcawl Lions and Niall Ferguson for this donation.” Sue O’Brien

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Let’s peel back the myths and legends to the true, historical story at the heart of Christmas? Look beyond flying reindeer, elves making toys and Santa coming down the chimney from a secret hideout in the North Pole. Let’s see the manager in Bethlehem, where poor descendants of a famous Jewish King were forced by Roman occupiers to travel and register for the payment of taxes. The young girl, Mary, giving birth to a unique person who would change the world – Jesus, the Christ (Messiah). He was soon called - Son of David, Son of Man, and Son of God. Shepherds guarding sheep raised for sacrifice in Jerusalem brought encouraging words, inspired they said by an awesome experience of God. This child would be known as ‘the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’. Travelers from the east, navigating by the stars left gifts to bless the new born baby that were both precious and deeply symbolic. This child was to be Saviour of the World, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This is history – His Story. Come and worship at a church near you this Christmas. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church
WHAT HAPPENED TO 2017?
TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa From the Workshop, we wish everyone a very happy and blessed Christmas. The Christmas card is one illustrated by Mark James who produces one each year typifying various aspects of ‘workshop life’. We are currently preparing a shipment of tools ready for Zambia. It is not all work and no play, and this month we enjoyed a works outing to the Royal Mint, arranged by David Cook our Workshop Manager. There were no freebies. We are currently getting ready to erect the Christmas Cribs in town working with Chris Steins and Churches Together in Porthcawl. We are hoping to re-roof the workshop in the next few weeks so cannot store any more tools until the New Year. We are extremely short of sash clamp ends and spoke shaves for carpentry kits. Thanking you for all your support during this year. John Hanson Group Coordinator Tel: 01656 786367
A MYSTERY STAR
With New Year just weeks away, many will reflect on what they did and did not achieve in 2017? I am pleased to report our project to provide Porthcawl with a significant Samtampa memorial and preserve and expand the heroic legacy of the 47 seamen that died on the rocks at Sker Point 70 years ago, is coming to fruition. With the help of many people, especially our Patron Carwyn Jones AM and Cllr Mike Clark, we succeeded in raising £70,000 to honour their inspirational courage. This has enabled us to create a major bilingual exhibition, which has been held in the Senedd, Porthcawl YMCA and the Waterfront Museum, Swansea. Also a detailed schools programme, grave restoration and a sculptured stone memorial will be completed in 2018, the Year of the Sea. Failed achievement? In 2014 many residents and visitors were pleased with our Poppy Roundabout project. We raised £600 to have BCBC prepare and poppy seed two Porthcawl roundabouts to commemorate the start of the Great War. Then in January we wrote asking if they would repeat the poppy roundabouts to commemorate the centenary of its end in 2018. We are disappointed that despite our enquiries we have still not received an answer. Gary Victor. Porthcawl Shout Forum
Capella is one of the brightest stars in the sky and one of the easiest to identify from the UK, as it is visible all year round. During the summer months Capella is very low on the northern horizon but it will never disappear below it. In winter it’s high overhead and yellow-orange in appearance. In fact it consists of four stars all orbiting each other. All four stars are considerably larger than the Sun and they are so close to each other that they cannot be separated using a telescope. Capella is closer to the north celestial pole than any other first magnitude star and will help you find your way around that part of the sky. Just below and to the right of Capella is one of the most mysterious stars in the Galaxy. Known as Epsilon Aurigae, it’s much fainter than Capella but 50 times farther away. This is one of the most massive stars known to exist and it’s orbited by a companion around which is floating an enormous dark disk, which continues to baffle astronomers. Every 27 years the disk eclipses the companion star and causes the system to become dimmer. Clive Down FRAS

legal advice THE RISE IN COHABITING COUPLES The cohabiting couple is the second largest family type and the fastest growing, having more than doubled from 1.5 million families in 1996 to 3.3 million families in 2017. However, a recent study has shown that more than a third of cohabiting couples either believed they had the same rights as married couples or did not know. The reality is that cohabiting couples are not afforded the same legal rights as their married counterparts when it comes to property ownership and maintenance payments. The study found there is a lack of awareness and take up of wealth protection measures such as cohabitation agreements which are legally binding. 76 % of those surveyed had not heard of cohabitation agreements, and of those who had, only 10 % had such an agreement in place. And more than a third of cohabiting couples were unaware that if the property is owned as joint tenants, the value of the home is typically split 50:50 regardless of how much each contributed. This is particularly alarming given that only half of the joint owners surveyed contributed equal amounts to the deposit and made equal contributions to the monthly mortgage payments. Although owning a property as tenants in common and clearly specifying the percentage each party owns can prevent lengthy and expensive disputes, only 14 % of respondents bought their home as tenants in common. Moreover, almost 60 % of respondents were unaware that if they are beneficial joint tenants their share will automatically pass to the surviving cohabitee despite what their will says. Despite the huge implications of the differing outcomes, the survey revealed that only a third were given professional advice on different ownership structures when purchasing their current home. Therefore, by having legal advice at the outset, problems can be avoided at a later stage. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

Workplace bullying and harassment Workplace bullying and harassment can take many forms, some more obvious than others. Examples include: • name calling, sexist remarks, racial slurs, comments about appearance; • offensive office ‘banter’, malicious rumours or controversial humour; • unfair treatment or informal threats of being sacked; • sexual innuendo, advances from a co-worker, or unwanted flirting, including “sexting” or sexual comments made via social media. Harassment is linked to discrimination. It is related to any of the following ‘protected characteristics, Age, sex, disability, race, religion, gender, marriage and civil partnership; Harassing someone from one of these groups is illegal if it violates their dignity, or if it creates a hostile, degrading or offensive environment for them. Bullying is often defined in terms of behaviour that undermines, humiliates, or injures a person. It is not linked to discrimination, so the legal implications are different to harassment. If you feel this is happening to you then raise your concerns with your line manager, union representative or the HR department with evidence to back up your claim if you have it. If the bullying or harassment is affecting your health, visit your doctor. If it is causing you to take time off work sick, ask for a ‘fit note’. Keep a detailed record of every bullying incident and related conversations. Keep any evidence, for example emails from the bully. You should have been given a copy of the company’s written disciplinary and grievance procedure when you started your employment (it may be part of the company handbook) - this should set out the internal steps you can take to address a problem at work such as bullying or harassment. If an informal approach does not work, follow the formal grievance procedure set out in your company’s policy. If you are a member of a trade union, talk to the employee representative about your problem. If you have exhausted all other options and the problem is still not resolved, you can discuss the matter with an employment lawyer who may advise legal action. In some circumstances this may lead to a settlement agreement or as a last resort, an employment tribunal. If you resign as a result of bullying or harassment, in certain circumstances you may be able to bring a claim of constructive dismissal against your former employer, based on the fact that the mutual trust and confidence has been broken. But always take legal advice first.

SKER WI – ‘BEETLING’ FOR RNLI!
NEWTON WI
On Monday 23rd October, Friends of Sker WI came together in St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village to raise money for RNLI, Porthcawl; a cause dear to the hearts of our seaside community. 44 ladies from Sker and Cwm Brombil WI’s enjoyed an entertaining ‘Beetle Drive’ with an excellent buffet provided by Sker WI committee members. Everyone who attended agreed that the evening had been lots of fun. The evening also proved to be a successful fundraiser with a total of £218 raised from ticket sales and raffle. Later that week Sker WI President Nora Williams presented the money raised to Ms Rosemarie Ellwood, acting on behalf of Porthcawl RNLI. Visitors are always welcome and we would love to meet you, so why not come along and say hello! Christine Beynon
Recently, Newton WI enjoyed a very well attended meeting. The evenings business was discussed and outings schedules finalised. This month’s speaker was Mr. Chris Bleach, who gave us a very knowledgeable talk on the life of the wonderful Tommy Cooper. Tommy was much loved by his fans and died whilst entertaining them in 1984. He was born in Caerphilly where there is a statue commemorating his life. Thanks to Anne Thomas and Janet Davies for organising and collecting the ‘Samaritan Child’ Christmas boxes. These shoe boxes and their contents make such a difference to a childs Christmas who would otherwise have nothing. So thanks also to all who contributed. Our ‘Walking Group’ braved the inclement weather conditions to walk along Aberafan Beach, finishing with a delicious lunch at Remo’s. On November 10th we held our Christmas Fayre at Trinity, which was well supported with a record-breaking result. We are looking forward to our forthcoming trip to Abby Cwm Hir and all the other events leading up to Christmas. Nadolg Llawen to all our members. M Freeman
LALESTON WI NEWS We last met on 2nd November and 26 members attended with one prospective new member. All members who had attended the Federation Abba evening had a wonderful night. Christmas Lunch will be at Tommy Heaney’s Restaurant, The Great House Hotel, Laleston on 12th December. Some of our members will be attending the Federation Carol Service at The Brangwyn Hall, Swansea on 4th December. Our speaker for the evening - Mrs Reveree - was introduced and she gave a demonstration of Willow Weaving and had all members participating - which was great fun. A vote of thanks was given by Christine Rees. The raffle was won by Mo Morgan and the competition by Kathryn Nelson. Our next meeting will be on 7th December which will be our Christmas Party. Our WI meet on the first Thursday of each month at The Blandy Hall, Laleston at 7.15pm and all are welcome to join us. More information from Diane Marshall 01656 656600
PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS The nights may have drawn in but we have not - still busy with our activities in the guild. Our meeting in October started well with a presentation to Janet Anderson, our treasurer, on the occasion of her Diamond Wedding Anniversary. Janet’s husband, David, is a regular speaker for us and we enjoy his photograph presentations of their travels. Pat Johnson was the speaker for the meeting telling us what she did in her shed. Making felt! An interesting and amusing talk and she modelled some of her beautiful creations. The Cardiff Federation annual lunch, held again at the Atlantic Hotel, was well attended by many Glamorgan guilds. Our Autumn Fayre was successful - raising money for Pagets Foundation. Our meeting this month is on December 13th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Rev. Clive Williams will be entertaining us in his usual inimitable way. I know this will be a good afternoon so do come and join in our Christmas tea afterwards. All that is left is to wish you all a very Happy Christmas! Do visit us next year! BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS Bridgend Soroptimists once again took part in the Remembrance Day parade in the town on 12th November where President Lily (seen in the picture) laid a poppy wreath on behalf of the club. At the recent meeting held at The Heronston Hotel members donated shoe boxes filled with gifts for children in Eastern Europe. The consignment of boxes were taken to a local collection point for onward transportation to their final destination. The club is entering a tree again at the Christmas Tree Festival, which will run from 4th – 9th December in Nolton Church Bridgend. Members have been busy for weeks making delightful decorations to depict the Meru Project which supports women in Kenya growing their own food for their families and enables any surplus to be sold on to raise further funds to expand production. Do go along and see this. A Christmas Carol Service will be held on 13th December at the Princess of Wales Chapel at 6.30pm. Members will then adjourn to the home of President Lily for Fish and Chips, raising funds for the International Water Aid Appeal. Eileen Bayley
PORTHCAWL WI Well, nearly Christmas, and our WI will be celebrating with our Birthday Dinner in the Atlantic Hotel this month. We enjoyed our October Meeting with yet another superb display of Ceramics from Rose Jones and guess what – I bought another Christmas Tree. The committee is in the process of organising our agenda for 2018 and hope to include a number of interesting and educational talks and trips. Our Craft and Reading groups are up and running and members are welcome to join in. As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on (01656) 713124.

business & finance WELL, HERE WE ARE AGAIN… It seems far less than a year since I was wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year, yet here we are again after a year of great change. With little over five weeks to go at the time of writing this article, I am again reminding people that getting the various finances sorted after Christmas is key to what the next twelve months holds going forward. Certainly the rise in the Bank of England rate just a couple of weeks back will have some small effect upon everyone’s pocket, yet rates for borrowing money is STILL incredibly low and there are still very competitive deals to be had out there, as not all lenders have yet raised their borrowing rates. There are way too many people who are on their lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR) when they could be moving onto a rate that is less than half of what they currently pay – and surely nobody wants to pay double, do they? Only this week, we have saved one client around £300 per month on his mortgage – just for the sake of him giving us a call and us using the computerised system surveying the market to find him a deal he could not have found himself. This could be YOU. With inflation currently around 3%, surely one way to get more for your pound is to find cheaper borrowing and a simple call could get you a new deal where you save more than perhaps you thought possible. Give us a call in confidence and without commitment, and we’ll do our utmost to assist – 01656 782545 or 07768 418308, even at weekends. In the meantime, here’s wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year and to those of you that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting and helping this year, many thanks.

FINANCIAL GIFTS FOR CHRISTMAS With Christmas just round the corner, making an investment for your children or grandchildren is a great way to give them a financial start in life, long after the festivities are over. Even small amounts can really add up if you save regularly from a child’s birth and there are many ways to invest on behalf of a child. Children are taxed just like adults, and just like adults it means that if they’ve no income, they can earn up to £17,500 a year from savings without paying tax (that’s the £11,500 personal allowance + £5,000 starting savings allowance + the £1,000 personal savings allowance (PSA)). Therefore, for the vast majority of situations, a standard Children’s Savings Account issued by a bank or building society is all you need to get started.

PASSIVE FUNDS – V – ACTIVE FUNDS Passively Managed Funds (also known as index tracking funds) aim to track the performance of a particular index; such as the FTSE UK Equity Index. They offer a convenient, low cost way to gain exposure to a broad range of shares. The number of tracker funds available in the market has grown enormously over the last few years. The Volatility and the risk of each funds will obviously depend on the type of investments held, and also the manager’s tracking strategy. Actively Managed Funds are where the manager chooses the underlying investments held in the fund on the investor’s behalf. Their aim will be to outperform their stated benchmark, although not all are successful in this goal. One of the main differences between passive and active funds management are fees. As they require less day-to-day management passive funds should have significantly lower ongoing charges. This can be as low as 0.1% per annum With actively managed funds, the extra work and analysis involved means investors will have to pay more in the way of on-going charges. The average annual charge is around 0.75% however some funds charge up to 2% especially if they are performance related. So what do you get back for your money? Well, passive funds in UK Equities have returned over 60% in the last five years but some of the more successful Active funds have returned 120%, so well worth the extra costs. However this is not always the 48 | seaside news

Keri Harvey trading as Dragon Financial Services is an Appointed Representative of the On-Line Partnership Limited, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority Think carefully about securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.
If your child is fortunate enough to have income in excess of these allowances, then a Junior ISA is worth consideration. A Junior ISA is a permanently tax-free savings or investment wrapper aimed at encouraging families to save for their children’s futures. You can place up to £4,128 per year into a Junior ISA, which can be split between the two types of Junior ISAs: Junior Cash ISAs This is where you put the cash in what is quite simply a tax-free savings account. The money is completely safe (provided it’s a UK-regulated provider and you’ve no more than £85,000 with that financial institution) and you receive a defined amount of interest. The only risk is the money won’t grow as quickly as inflation. Junior Stocks & Shares ISAs Here, returns depend on the performance of the stocks or shares you’ve invested in. Anyone with a Child Trust Fund (CTF) can convert it to a Junior ISA. This is a major boost for those with a Cash CTF as returns tend to be far worse than Junior ISA rates. FINAL SALARY PENSION TRANSFER At CST Wealth we’ll provide you with a detailed advice report setting out the advantages and disadvantages of transferring from your final salary pension scheme and based on your personal circumstances. Gwyn Williams who leads the team that can provide this specialist advice is a Chartered Independent Financial Planner and a Chartered Accountant. Initial Assessment We use lifetime cash flow modelling and tax planning as an essential part of this process as well as understanding your attitude to risk and your capacity for loss that you could tolerate in retirement. Why you might transfer your pension 1. If you convert your final salary scheme rights into cash and put the money into a personal pension scheme instead then you benefit from the new pension freedoms which allow you more choice about how you use your money. 2. A personal pension arrangement may be attractive for the potential to draw tax-free cash in stages throughout retirement rather than in the first year of retirement. 3. By converting your final salary benefit pension rights into a personal pension you are able to leave a legacy to your heirs. 4. State of Health is also an important consideration. 5. Being comfortable in accepting responsibility for investing the transfer value is crucial and understanding that the future returns are not guaranteed. 6. A large number of factors need to be carefully considered on a case by case basis to ensure that retaining or transferring pension benefits is appropriate for your personal needs and objectives. gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS
Last month we had our annual Christmas coffee morning and fund raising event which included the sale of beautifully handcrafted Christmas cards, gifts and cakes. All of the proceeds from these events goes towards the maintenance and upkeep of Blandy Hall Cliff Cottage where our club is based. Looking back at photographs taken during the past year gives all of us a chance to reflect on some of the planting successes (and disasters?) that we have had in our gardens. Even the most skilled gardener can experience a setback (or perhaps a ‘learning opportunity’) at some point. Who hasn’t had a row of nicely developing lettuce plants mown down to stumps by slugs overnight? Thankfully our club shop has a wide range of products to help us keen gardeners. The products available range from organic pest control, to a broad spectrum of composts and plant nutrients. On these dark, gloomy days the chance to snuggle up in the warm with a selection of seed catalogues is a cheery prospect! Discussions with fellow club members on what new vegetables or plants we will try next year is interesting as some members are quite adventurous – purple carrots anybody? CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Day by day Christmas is getting closer- yikes! Still things to do in garden, it’s pruning time – the harder you prune the stronger will be the resulting growth, but don’t prune for the sake of it the fewer wounds you make on a plant the better as each wound is a potential entry point for disease. Stand back and look at the plant, consider its appearance after all you can’t stick a branch bad on if you mess it up! Spike your lawn with a fork to improve drainage (I love talking about lawns – that’s hubby’s job!) Group all your pots together in a sheltered corner to give them protection against winter weather and don’t forget to shake any snow of your shrubs. Earth up your brassicas to help in strong winds. Hope you’ve got lots of lovely Brussel sprouts for Christmas dinner! Did you know Holly is the December flower, Holly symbolises ‘domestic happiness’ and according to the Holly Society the spines on the holly leaves act as miniature lighting conductors. Now you know where to stand in storm! Wonder why Santa is so jolly? It’s because he knows where all the bad girls live! Chris Early

health & wellbeing EXPERTS HELP KEEP VISION HEALTHY
An eye test plays a huge part in making sure your eyes stay healthy. Not only are they important for indicating whether you need to start wearing glasses or change your prescription, but also for helping to detect and manage some medical conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. Everyone’s vision is different, so when you visit Specsavers in Bridgend or Porthcawl, your eye test is tailored to you, using the latest technology and techniques. This may include digital retinal photography, which takes a very detailed picture of the back of the eyes and helps the optician record any changes which you may not be aware of yet. If you do need glasses, we will find a pair that are right for you; we have a catalogue of more than 1,000 glasses. We’re always sourcing the latest materials and following fashions from around the world to bring you an unequalled choice with the latest fashions, designer labels, materials, colours and frame shapes. Stuart Buckmaster, store director in Bridgend, says: ‘You really can’t put a price on the health of your eyes and having good vision is something that can be taken for granted, which is why having regular eye tests, every two years, is so important.’ To book a test, call Specsavers Bridgend on 01656 649127 or Porthcawl on 01656 782832, or visit: www.specsavers.co.uk
HIDDEN SUGAR Ever wondered why you’re packing on loads of weight, even though you think you’re eating healthy? The truth is, many foods we perceive to be healthy (thanks to clever marketing, usually) may be far from it! Some contain hidden ingredients like transfats, which the body has a hard time breaking down, as well as artificial colourings and preservatives. Added sugar is, arguably, the most common culprit – it’s put into foods to increase their flavour, especially in reduced fat foods. But just because there’s a nutrition-oriented statement on the package (like ‘contains whole grain,’ ‘excellent source of calcium,’ ‘fat-free,’ ‘100% juice’ or ‘25% less sugar’) doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain a shocking amount of sugar. Just because the brand name or product name sounds like it’s good for weight loss (Weight watchers, Skinny Cow, etc.), don’t assume the food is lower in sugar. Whilst it was once thought that sugar was only bad for our teeth, people are waking up to the fact that sugar is incredibly harmful to our health overall. Researchers now say that it’s implicated in the rise of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, depression and even cancer. Read more at: www.eluxemagazine.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke
A BIG THANK YOU FROM KRUF
CALM AND INFECTIOUS GIVING Last month, I mentioned the act of giving. Christmas - a societal ritual of giving. But it’s complex, you know it’s complex, because it’s a ‘thinking’ minefield and can be stressful. So many questions etched in doubt. Have I bought enough? Will they like this gift? Have I been fair financially? Am I being mean? Do I really want to give to this person? Am I just going through the motions? Finally the day comes and you receive. Do you really receive in a deep and meaningful way? Yes and No I guess. Buddhism is a practice of the heart and mind. I absolutely enjoy the preparation and the contemplation of the giving of gifts that can foster positive relationships with all. But to do this we have to step into another shoes, investigate deeper needs and wants. There has to be deep listening and time spent (the real present). This information about another and our preparation of giving can be time served to prepare for this wonderful occasion. So replace rush, click and collect, with just fifteen minutes contemplating your friends and family. All that they do and say, what they may need on a deeper level. Calm your own mind, offer your care towards them and choose gifts when the mind is at ease. Extending that developed ease into the hearts around you. Neville Evans

This year KRUF has been so well supported by the people of Porthcawl and Bridgend that they have been able to provide vital support to people with kidney problems and their families. The coffee mornings, silent auction, Walk For Life and the Ascot day were so well attended and people were so generous that they were able to give £2,000 to Kidney Wales to help with the provision of a social worker to support children who are on dialysis. As well as money for the kidney units, the Ascot Day enabled a donation of £1,000 for the children’s ward in The Princess of Wales Hospital, which they used to buy equipment for the play areas. Friends of KRUF formed a craft group and managed to raise £700 by knitting hedgehogs. Everything was so successful KRUF managed to provide £3,000 of equipment to the kidney transplant ward in Cardiff UHW. Members and friends are seen pictured presenting the equipment to the ward. Our next event is a grand Christmas Bazaar on Sunday 3rd December at 12.30 in the sports pavilion in Locks Lane. Lots of stalls and Santa will be there! Judith French Publicity Officer

arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW It’s been a topical subject lately, the fact that this will be a ‘lost’ generation, photographically speaking, because so many people these days take pictures on their iPhones and other gadgets, and if they do not make prints to keep in an album, inevitably the pictures will be lost to posterity. The same applies with digital video recording, as systems rapidly become obsolete. My argument in favour of film is invariably based on quality – I simply prefer the look of it. Film negative is a physical entity, it can be handled, held up to the light and the image is there for all to see. Digital imagery, by contrast, is an electronic code, and no matter how good the image looks when it is put up on a screen, or printed out, the fact remains that the original only exists in binary form and can easily be lost. Does this really matter? Well yes, I think it matters very much if people in the future find an enormous gap in the photographic record of our present time. We take photographs of the twentieth century for granted, but what of today’s world when we come to view it tomorrow? STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I’ve been overlooked again to turn Porthcawl’s Christmas light on – then I remembered they haven’t had an Christmas countdown for years. Isn’t it sad for the kids? Still, thanks for my birthday wishes for my 48th. The Planet Rock Festival at Trecco Bay sadly sold out months ago, so book your tickets early next year. I had a preview of Nottage singer/ songwriter Rebecca Hurn’s new E.P. ‘Waves’, and it’s really good. Congratulations to local keyboard wizard Dan Burton on his tour with 80s star Howard Jones. Don’t miss the Christmas Cracker Show at Pyle RFC on Saturday 16th December with The Cornelly Beatles and various singers. Another don’t miss night is Saturday 23rd December at the Prince, Porthcawl, when top DJ’s Nigel and Andrew Graham hold their legendary Melting Pot Session with Soul, Ska, Funk and Reggae! Thanks to the Pavilion for letting me check out Dire Straits bassist John Illsley’s band. It was a fab night and good to see the venue booking big artists. Finally, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to my lovely minders, and to Mat and staff at our favourite magazine, and all of you out there, have a good one! PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
The joint concert with Whitland Male Choir was once again a huge success. After Whitland visited Porthcawl back in May it was Porthcawl choir’s turn to visit Whitland for the return match and what a successful evening it turned out to be. The concert was held in Tabernacle chapel in Whitland. Whitland choir started proceedings with some traditional pieces including Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn and Benedictus. Porthcawl responded with Bryn Myrddin, Old Man River and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. The first half concluded with the choirs joining forces for a rousing rendition of O GYMRU, which the audience thoroughly enjoyed. In the second half Whitland delivered pieces in keeping with armistice tradition including Soldiers Farewell and a moving rendition of For the Fallen. Porthcawl Choir’s second session included World in Union, One, Tell Me It’s Not True and a finale of African Trilogy led by John Jones, resplendent in a Zulu costume. This was a show-stopper and had the audience on their feet applauding and cheering. Once again the choirs came together for a rendition of American Trilogy, which the audience once again responded to magnificently. The choirs were also grateful to Donna Jones who was the guest artist on the evening. Portchawl choir are now looking forward to a busy Christmas Period of engagements. Mal Evans
MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR The choir is currently busy practising for their Christmas Concerts. Our first concert is at Brocastle Care Home where we sang for the first time last year. On the 14th of December we are taking part in the service at Rhiwceiliog - an annual event in our calendar which we look forward to. Our final event for December is our Carol Service, which is being held in St. David’s Church Pencoed on 16th of December at 7pm. Once again there will be soloists supporting the choir, a raffle and light refreshments. There have been a number of changes in the choir with ‘Our Doreen’ a sprightly 95 year old having to hang up her singing voice. Doreen will be sadly missed as she has been with the choir for 38 years. We wish her well for the future. On a happier note Norman’s health has improved allowing him to return to the choir. Welcome back Norman. If you enjoy singing why not come along to one of our practices on a Thursday evening at 19:15 in Pencoed Bowls Club and see what you think. Just give me a ring on 07939 886843 to let me know you’re coming along. Tony Esmond Chairperson/Press Officer

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR RETURNS
The Bridgend Male Choir certainly enhanced its reputation on its annual tour to Majorca in October with three performances over three days. The Concerts were in support of charity fund-raising through the Anglican Church, Calvia Lions and Rotary International with in excess of €7500 raised. The highlight of the Tour was most certainly the final concert in the wonderful surroundings of the Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma where the choir entertained an audience of well over 1000. Musical Director, Ryan Wood demonstrated his control skills to get the best from his charges throughout the tour and was ably supported by the exceptionally talented Stephanie Bailey on piano and Scott Williams on the magnificent Cathedral organ. It was not all ‘work’, with ample time to sample the delights of the Island with excursions, arranged throughout the principality by Calvia Tourist Board and the Charity Committee, to Capdepera, Palma & Bellver Castle. “WUNDERBAR!” SAYS COR BRO OGWR Yes, it was truly a wonderful choir tour to Bridgend’s twinning town of Langenau, in Southern Germany, accompanied by members of the Town Twinning Committee. On our first day we took part in the Reformation Anniversary Service (500 years), in the nearby Martinskirche where we were welcomed by the clergy and congregation. During a day visit to the medieval city of Ulm, we sang two Welsh songs in the impressive Lutheran Minster, which boasts the tallest church spire in the world. Lunch was taken in a typical Swabian restaurant in the heart of the ancient Fishermen’s Quarter. Another memorable visit was to Stuttgart, visiting Ludwigsburg Palace and the Mercedes Benz Museum. For our main concert in Langenau we sang with local choir Liederkranz Aleck and their Junior choir. Our soprano, Erin Alexander, had the audience on their feet with her solo items and when we all joined together to sing Mendelssohn’s ‘Verleih Uns Frieden’, with words by Martin Luther. We were made most welcome by the town, the Burgmeistr hosting a dinner for us with entertainment from the local Hurdy Gurdy player. Next concert December 9th at All Saints Church Porthcawl 7pm. Dominique Spearey

sport reports THREE PORTHCAWL YOUNGSTERS SIGN FOR SWANSEA
Remarkably three of Porthcawl’s finest young footballers, having played for the same under 8’s team have been signed by the Swansea City Football Academy. Rhys Evans, Aston Bevington and Alex Evans all played for Porthcawl Town under 8’s and after a very successful season were all officially signed for the under 9’s Swansea Academy. It must be very unusual that one team has supplied three players to the Academy but it’s a massive testament to the coaches and the set up at Porthcawl under 8s last year. The coaching standards and support were of the highest quality, which allowed all the boys the very best start to their playing careers. Swansea City’s Academy is categorised as the highest category one level. Based in the shadow of Liberty Stadium, Swans Academy at Landore is a multi-million pound facility where the next generation of first team players are being developed and produced from age nine. The Academy’s pre-season training started for the boys in July this year so they are now well established into the tough regime and set up. It’s a massive commitment for the boys (and parents), which has included training at the Academy facility in Landore 4 days a week with an additional match day against their premier league rivals on the weekends. It has been a remarkable time for the young boys, which has included an official signing day in July where they were presented with a signing on shirt as well as being presented to a capacity crowd at a recent premier league match at the Liberty Stadium. In September all the boys took part in the Welcome to the Premier League Academy Festival at the University of Warwick. During the festival they played against many of their premier league rivals such as Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea. It was a great experience for the boys where they came away with quite a few high-profile wins against top opposition. All the boys know there will be many challenges ahead as they progress at the Academy. They are great friends on and off the field and offer a great deal of support to each other. They have already developed a great team spirt and camaraderie with their new teammates and look forward to all the challenges ahead. Nick Evans, father of Alex Evans

GB SELECTION FOR GRACE! Grace Morgan has been a member of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club for over ten years, having joined the club when she was just seven years old. It has long been an ambition for Grace to represent Great Britain in surf lifesaving, and she realised her dream this summer. Following an outstanding season, in both pool and beach competitions, Grace was delighted to be selected to represent GB at the European Championships in Belgium - being one of only two Welsh athletes selected for the Youth Team. In the pool, Grace was a member of the obstacle relay team who broke the British record! On the beach, Grace swam a tough surf swim race to come out of the sea in bronze medal position. Grace was also a member of the ocean relay team who became European Champions. The GB Youth Team was a force to be reckoned with in the sea and on the beach, winning that element of the competition. As you read this article, Grace is in New Zealand representing Great Britain for the second time this year in the International Surf Rescue Challenge. Good luck Grace! Grace is the first member from Rest Bay to represent GB, and as a club, we are very proud of her.
PORTHCAWL RFC NEW SPONSOR
We are delighted to have James Bater and uSmile Dental Practice on board as our main sponsor this season. The sponsorship deal will mean that the uSmile logo will take pride of place on our first team’s playing shirts and shorts. After gaining promotion last season to Division 3 West Central A, as a Club we were keen to invest in new playing kit for our players. It’s vital for grass roots clubs to have the support and investment from local businesses to be able to do this. As an ex-Ospreys player James understands the need for support and investment in the community game. James Said “I’m delighted to be able to support Porthcawl RFC in this way, as an ex-professional rugby player I gained so much from the game I love and it’s great to be able to give something back in this way
email your sport report info@seasidenews.co.uk and support a local team. It’s clear to see they are an ambitious club having gained promotion last season. I’m looking forward to watching their progress this season”. Team Manager, Ian McDonald said “There is a real sense of something special happening at South Road. There’s a good buzz around the Club. Everyone’s enjoying themselves and we’ve got some depth in our playing squad. Players want to play for the jersey. Attracting new sponsors such as James at uSmile is vital for the development of our Club. The new kit was presented a few weeks ago, where Porthcawl welcomed Bryncoch RFC to it’s South Road ground. Porthcawl won 29-3 and are currently unbeaten in the league and are through to the fourth round of the WRU National Bowl. PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS
Firstly, a massive thank you to the members of Royal Porthcawl Golf Club for their extremely kind donation of £1500. As a registered charity, we rely on such gestures to enable us to continue with the future of the club, and also ensuring that the members have access to the newest safety equipment. If you or your company is looking for a cause to donate to, then please consider us. All will be gratefully received. As the cold weather and dark nights are now fully upon us, we have retreated back to the safe and warm waters of Pyle Pool on Friday nights. However, even training has to take the occasional break, so the last session for this year will be on Friday 15th December. We will then reconvene on Friday January 12th. Of course, there’ll be a good few of us in the water on Christmas morning for the traditional mad dip! If you have a child over seven and are interested in finding out more about the club, please check out the website. www.plgc.org.uk A happy Christmas and healthy new year to Mat, and the Seaside News crew, and to all our readers. Phil Protheroe Picture: Cheque presentation from Royal Porthcawl Golf Club
Early deadline reminder for January 2018 issue: Friday 8th December
Since the last edition we have managed only two fixtures. The weather has been a little unkind and some games had to be cancelled. However, results were: Porthcawl 60 v Britton Ferry 0; Tondu 10 v Porthcawl 55. We have had some great training sessions and the boys have really been taking on some tactical and structural parts of rugby and have brought this into games and some competitive training sessions. They are really getting stuck in and enjoying their rugby at the moment and its evident in the way they apply themselves. The coaches work hard on skills and how these can be used in a game situation and how good decisions develop them as players. We hope to get a lot more games played which will further help with their development. Hope that all readers have a great festive period. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Geraint Evans

sport reports PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM 2017
This year will see the 53rd Annual Christmas Morning Swim and we will mark it with some sadness following the sad passing earlier this year of Jack Bridge - one of the swim founders and our very first Father Christmas. In his honour the theme this year will be ‘Father Christmas’ and the main charity will be Macmillan Cancer Support. New for this year is a speeded up registration process so that those who pre register on-line can check in and get their mugs quicker than before. Full details can be found on our website www.christmasswim.org and Facebook page Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim.
Also on the website you will be able to donate online or set up your own sponsorship page, so there will be plenty of ways to support us even if you can’t be there on the day. Last year we donated a total of £10,000 to LATCH and 19 other local causes. The committee are as always hugely grateful to all our sponsors and supporters, and if you would like to help either financially or by helping on the day please get in touch by email at christmasswim@gmail.com Christmas Swim Committee
