Charity supports local older people

Blood Bikes & Thunder Road join forces!

Dear Editor, While we’re busy remembering the good times spent with loved ones over the festive period, it’s easy to forget older people who were alone this Christmas. As we get older, life throws things our way which can make us feel less connected and lonely. If this sounds familiar, it may help to know you’re not alone. Around a million older people in the UK are chronically lonely, and nearly half of older people consider the telly to be their best friend, but it shouldn’t be this way. Independent Age is a growing charity which empowers older people across the UK and Ireland through the ‘A B

SCHOOLS Brynteg’s Bradley is Welsh champion

Corneli Primary news

Brynteg School is proud to announce another Welsh champion in its midst! Bradley Chatman, aged 14 years and a Year 10 pupil took part in the Welsh Tae Kwando Championships which were held at Caerleon University on Sunday 27th October 2013. Bradley is a Blue/Red Stripe Belt and he fought in the Blue/Red Belt category and is now the Welsh Middleweight champion. Bradley began to take the sport of Tae Kwando seriously in 2012 and is going for his Red Belt grading next month. He recently started training with the Welsh squad and has been selected to compete for the British Middleweight title in the British Open Championships in Cardiff on Sunday 24th October. Bradley’s family are immensely

Receiving our Healthy Schools Stage 5 Leaf and Third Green Flag Award was a source of great pride. We now look forward to the challenge of achieving the Platinum Award. We are proud too of all our children but especially Taya Beechey for her recent fundraising efforts. Touched by the plight of the hurricane Haiyan victims, she collected over ÂŁ300 by reading to shoppers. What a fantastic achievement, Taya, well done. A well done also to everyone who helped us raise ÂŁ260 through a non-uniform day for the Children in Need appeal. Christmas was a busy but exciting time. There were

proud of Bradley’s success. Apart from his ambition of competing for his country at the Olympics Bradley hopes that his sporting achievements will help him along his chosen career path in the future. Pam Doster pa.doster@bryntegcs. bridgend.sch.uk

Stagecoach enrolling now

Porthcawl Primary news This month we have been lucky enough to have a number of different visitors to our school. Some of our older pupils took part in a ‘Playground Computing’ workshop. They learnt all about the fundamentals of computer science ranging from binary to computer programming. As well as being informative the sessions were really interactive and our pupils gained a lot from the various activities. We also had a visit from the sound engineer who helped us produce our CD. It was really interesting to see how voices are recorded onto CD and the ďŹ nished product sounded great.

Our younger pupils have been busy learning all about different vehicles. As well as a trip to the Swansea Waterfront Museum they have designed and created cars which will be used to transport CDs. The cars are looking very colourful after a ďŹ nal paint job and we are looking forward to testing them over the next few weeks. We hope our year 6s can take some inspiration from their designs as we have signed up to take part in the Formula One School Challenge later in the year. Andrew Wood Head Teacher

lots of fun things to do at the Christmas Fayre and we were delighted that Father Christmas found time to come and visit. The highlight of our celebrations was a superb production of Aladdin, written by our own Miss Evans and Miss Morgan which played to packed houses. While full credit must go to the talented Year 6 children who formed the main cast, this was a whole school triumph involving every child. Thanks go to all the children, staff and parents for their support which ensured the show was a great success. Sue Jones

Stagecoach Theatre Arts are enrolling now for the new term! Open to boys and girls aged from 3 to 18 of all abilities. Often copied, but never equalled, Stagecoach has remained the leader for children’s performing arts education, with a global reputation. Schools run locally in Bridgend and The Vale after school and at the weekend. Stagecoach not only delivers the best performance arts training but ensures that each child gets the most out of their experience, by building life skills and conďŹ dence while having fun and meeting new friends. They teach students to act, sing and dance and then watch as they become more conďŹ dent, poised and selfassured. Students thrive in an environment where creativity

is nurtured, and technique and style are developed. Alongside weekly drama, singing and dance sessions, those children who wish to pursue formal awards can take LAMDA (London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art) exams, or PAA (Performance Arts Awards). All teachers are qualiďŹ ed, DBS checked and specialist. www.stagecoach.co.uk/ bridgend Helene Reynolds on 01446 772727 ‘Like’ us on Facebook and ‘Follow’ us on Twitter

Children at Nottage Primary are at the forefront of using technology to enhance their work, and that’s ofďŹ cial! Following an extensive external assessment Nottage has been awarded the prestigious ICT Mark for the second time. The award recognises the school’s success in developing the strategic use of technology in both administration and across the curriculum. Head teacher Susan O’Halloran commented: “On behalf of Nottage Primary School, I am delighted to be awarded the ICT Mark for the second time. It recognises our positive approach to the use of technology and the beneďŹ ts it is bringing to our children. We believe that technology can be used in every aspect of

I am delighted that the efforts of our young people will be used to beneďŹ t such worthy causes. The monies raised locally will be spent locally to beneďŹ t those in need within the community. We are very proud to include the mark on our website and our school headed paper. The lead member of staff, Seamus Gallagher (ICT Subject Leader), involved in ensuring the school was ready for ICT Mark assessment, commented: “I am really pleased that the presentation of this award shows recognition of the excellent work that is taking place at our school. As the new term begins, we are in the throes of ďŹ nal rehearsals for this year’s school production of Guys and Dolls. This will be staged at the Grand Pavilion from Wednesday 29th January to Saturday 1st February. Christmas at St John’s School We had an extremely busy time in the last few weeks of term as on top of the usual academic work we held a number of different events. Parents and family members enjoyed a showcase of musically talented pupils in two informal concerts. Performances of our annual

nativity play in which every pupil from Nursery to Year 5 took part were very well attended and everyone was amazed at the transformation of the Crampton Hall into a very busy Bethlehem. The Friends of St John’s organised a successful Christmas Ball for parents, friends and staff which included an auction and raffle and then a week later held their annual Christmas Bazaar.

Through these two events they raised over £3000. The school was also excited to host Santa and his reindeer for a weekend. Many pupils assisted as elves and everyone enjoyed a magical experience at Santa’s Grotto. We rounded off our Christmas celebrations with carol services

in St John’s Church, Newton and with delicious Christmas lunches cooked in school by our great kitchen team. Following the lunch Prep and Senior pupils proved through a fun afternoon of performances that “St John’s Has Talent!” To experience life at St John’s call the office to arrange a visit and free taster sessions. Cefn Cribwr Primary news

Brynteg news The autumn term has been both busy and productive enabling us to build upon our long and rich tradition of excellence in all aspects of the school’s provision. The publication of this year’s GCSE and A-level results got the term off to an excellent start. The hard work of staff and pupils, coupled with the support of parents, saw the school achieve the best GCSE results in its history. As an outcome of our 2013 performance, the school is now placed within Band 2. Naturally, as a school we are very pleased. We are now placed amongst the highest performing schools in Wales for many of the key indicators. Likewise, our A-level performance was also very pleasing with almost all Year 13 pupils gaining a place at university; the vast majority at their first choice institution. We offer our pupils a huge range of opportunities across a broad spectrum. Some of the recent highlights include our outstanding performance of The Tempest at the schools’ Shakespeare Festival held in the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff. The feedback received from parents, fellow contributors and the organisers has been exceptionally complimentary. To add to our success, a team of Year 12 students won the Bridgend and District heats of the National Consumer Quiz competition. This is the

second consecutive year that the school has been successful in the competition; we were Welsh champions in 2012. Congratulations also to the Year 8 team for winning the All Wales School Liaison Core Programme Quiz. Brynteg pupils have also had a successful autumn in debating and public speaking competitions. The school’s team won the Bridgend heats for the ESU Public Speaking Competition 2013/14. The Wales Debating Championships held in September saw Tom Prosser and Connor Lomax of Year 12 win their first round heat against Porth County School. Connor was awarded with an ‘Outstanding Debate’ certificate and will go through to the next round of interviews to represent Wales in the World Debating Championships. Brynteg also became the school with the largest number of completed Duke of Edinburgh Awards in the county, with 39 pupils achieving their silver awards and 78 achieving their bronze awards. Finally, pupils at the school have generously raised in excess of £5,000 for charities in the last month or so. The charities include Children in Need, The Santa Appeal and money to support victims of the Philippine’s disaster. Ian Morris

It has been an extremely busy term for everyone at Cefn Cribwr Primary School. The School Council were delighted to find on their return to school in September, that the designs that they had decided on for the new toilets had been put into action and had been built! We were all thrilled when we were awarded the Green Flag for being an Eco School and received our 5TH Healthy Schools Award in October. Many thanks to

everyone who worked so hard. The school was also proud to have its Investors in People status confirmed in November when we were award the bronze award. Our after school clubs have been very well attended with excellent numbers in all of them. On Mondays we run a Drama Club, On Tuesday it’s Dance and Clwb Cymraeg while on Thursdays it’s Rugby, Netball and Bookworms. Stephen

News From Newton Primary Well we are in the throes of Christmas concerts and every class has been practising like mad to impress grandparents, parents and carers. Our FP1 and FP2 children did their first joint concert this year, called the ABC Nativity and they made us proud. The school choir took part in a charity carol service in the Tabernacle, Bridgend on Sunday 8th

Summer Reading Challenge It seemed the only thing missing was Holly Willoughby when the Deputy Mayor of Bridgend sprung a Surprise Surprise style presentation on competition winner and

enthusiastic reader Jack Phillips! Jack was one of over 1600 children throughout the borough to complete the Summer Reading Challenge set nationally by libraries, to encourage and promote the

fun, and advantages of reading. Running parallel to the Reading Challenge was a prize draw for a Kobo eReader. This was presented to Jack after his name was randomly chosen from all the Reading Challenge readers. The presentation was made at the Pyle & District Tang Soo Do training at Pyle Life Centre, where Jack is a very highly respected hard working student. A short Tang Soo Do demonstration was followed by cakes and tea (courtesy of Mrs Barbara Powell). The presentation was made by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gary Thomas and Mr Huw David (Cabinet member for children and young people). Jack had read 18 books throughout the summer whilst competing in the Reading Challenge. The local Library Manager Mrs J Arbery, commented: ‘Jack was a very deserving winner because he is such an avid reader and loves books.” Gareth Powell

West Park Primary news A very happy New Year from all at West Park Primary School and great big thanks for all the support we received from our friends and families throughout 2013. We celebrated Christmas in style with our famous concerts held in the Grand Pavilion. The concerts were a huge success and the enthusiastic clapping and cheering from the packed auditorium was testament to all the hard work put in by staff and of course the stars of the show - our wonderful pupils! The letters and cards of appreciation we have received really have been heart warming and we are grateful as always for your support. Our Early Years stars in the making performed a beautiful nativity and as usual there was

not a dry eye in the house! Our wonderful PTA organised rafes which raised over ÂŁ1600 including ÂŁ4ÂŁ fund matching from Barclays Bank. Our sincere thanks to Barclays and to all those who donated prizes and bought rafe tickets, raising funds for the beneďŹ t of the pupils. During the autumn term, 219 pupils achieved 100% attendance! This is a really fantastic achievement so a huge congratulations to all of you! We must continue to work hard to achieve great attendance in the spring term so ďŹ ngers crossed for a very happy and healthy 2014! Sam Bennet admin.westparkprimary@ bridgend.gov.uk

NEWS Health services reorganisation By the time Seaside News reaches you, we will know the outcome of the South Wales Programme of health services reorganisation, which may see the end of A&E, neonatal, maternity and children’s services at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. In spite of the health board’s stand-apart position as a deliverer of public services, this process has been remarkable for its political nature. To begin with, it effectively silenced the question about the need for closing services by pitting hospital against hospital across South Wales, competing to keep what they have. Secondly, the timing of a decision in December, coming just hours after the Assembly went into Christmas recess and effectively preventing

backbench AMs like myself from scrutinising or debating it in the Senedd for over a month, is all very handy for those in charge of making the changes. Over 50,000 people across South Wales responded to the programme, with the majority coming from the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg area, indicating the high regard which people in my area hold their local services. This episode may be drawing to a close. But the longer debate – how we effectively deliver health – will continue. You can be certain of it.

Bridgend schools to get £3.7m extra

Bedroom tax

Last month the Welsh Assembly voted through its final budget for public services in Wales for the 2014-15 financial year. At £15 billion or so that is a substantial amount of money, the vast majority of which will be going to health and, through local councils to education and social services. Because the Government does not have a majority they are forced to work with other parties to get the budget through and this year the Welsh Liberal Democrats got together with Plaid Cymru to negotiate a substantial £100 million package that will benefit both our local schools and the health service. The Pupil Deprivation Grant

There has been a lot in the press lately about the so-called ‘bedroom tax’, more correctly known as the spare room subsidy. And much has been hysterical scaremongering by political vested interests. Let’s be clear. The changes ensure that housing benefit – which is funded by all of us – pays the rent for the size of property which each claimant requires and not for the type of property they desire. And which party first brought this in? None other than the last Labour government which changed the rules for tenants in private rented properties. All this coalition government has done is extend those rules to the social housing sector so that they now apply to

was created in 2012 following a budget deal between the Welsh Government and the Welsh Liberal Democrats. It is designed to give schools more money to help children from deprived backgrounds. As a result of the latest agreement with the Welsh Labour Government, in exchange for supporting the Welsh Government’s annual budget, the Pupil Deprivation Grant, has more than doubled. From 2014 schools will receive £918 for every pupil entitled to free school meals. As a result, schools in Bridgend will receive an additional £3.706m, thanks to the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

PETER BLACK AM Welsh Liberal Democrats www.peter-black.net www.peterblack.blogspot.com

Child poverty With the festivities of Christmas and the New Year behind us, winter sales all around and spring not far away, it’s worth us taking a moment to remember an often all too hidden social problem that is quietly growing in the shadows. The issue is child poverty. According to the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) there are 6,215 children in my Bridgend constituency living below the poverty line, a number which, seems all too likely to go up. One ward alone has 33% of children living in poverty, one in three. Child Poverty in Bridgend costs us around £67m a year and the UK around £39bn a year. This comes from a combination of very poor job prospects for such children once they grow MADELEINE MOON MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002 Seaside News | 18

up, as well as higher public spending from the social problems such high levels of poverty create. If the rate of child poverty increases, as the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates it will, this cost will increase to £35bn by 2020. It is easy to forget that the reality for many families coming up to Christmas was a stark choice between eating, heating and for some, paying the bedroom tax. To find out more, CPAG have launched a new campaign on the back of these statistics called People Like Us, which aims to reminds us that when we think about poverty and benefit claimants that these are real people, real families and real children. http://www.cpag.org.uk/ people-like-us

everyone who lives in a rented property and claims housing benefit. What’s the difference between tenants in properties owned by private landlords and those in properties owned by social landlords? None, that I can see. But there’s a huge difference as far as Labour politicians are concerned. Those same people who did nothing to oppose the changes for private tenants are now screaming blue murder because the coalition Government has applied this principle to social housing. Surely, what’s sauce for the private tenant is also sauce for the social tenant otherwise fair play goes out of the window.

We will work with you, offering advice, support and further contacts to help. We offer up to 3 days equivalent time and, if necessary, can link you up to further free support from a specific advisor/expert (equivalent to 2 days worth of time) For example, SUSSED, our sister organisation in Porthcawl, was using an excessive amount of energy on inefficient lighting, before receiving advice on procuring LED lighting in character with the shop’s design. Fosters Shoes now wants help

The demise of Comet Ison

Twelve Knights, Margam, and all are welcome. Our solicitor will advise on next steps, and we expect to change the name of our group so that we become: “Friends of Morfa”. We are still welcoming new members to our Facebook group. Thanks to all who supported our prolonged campaign – including the Seaside News. I referred earlier to Nelson Mandela, and perhaps it is not too fanciful to think he would have been proud of our victory for “people power”. As Archbishop Tutu said when voting for the first time in his life: “Yippee!” Dr Charles Smith

The much-anticipated perihelion passage Comet ISON is over, and instead of becoming a Great Comet, the comet fell apart; the remains are now invisible. As it approached the Sun, the comet produced a tail that reached a length of about 10°, and the head was a nakedeye object in the pre-dawn sky. The perihelion passage was watched by a number of spacecraft; all that emerged from the vicinity of the Sun after that close passage was a fan-shaped cloud of debris that then seemed to dissipate altogether. In the 21st century rugby and football stir the passions of many, but in the 18th and 19th centuries a game called bando, or bandy, set the sporting juices flowing. Wagers were placed on the outcome of a bando game and a set of local rules was agreed. Nevertheless, violent play often occurred with players striking their opponents with their bando sticks. Local rivalries developed, especially between Margam, Kenfig, Pyle and Llangynwyd. On the 31st May 1817 a match was played between Margam and NewtonNottage on Kenfig Sands. A week later, on the 7th June, the following report appeared in the Cambrian Newspaper: “About 3,000 attended to see

Kreutz members include The Great September Comet of 1882 which was the brightest ever recorded and Comet IkeyaSeki which, in 1965, became the brightest comet of the 20th century. the match which, from the celebrity of the combatants, was expected to be a good one. The game was conducted with perfect fairness and after a contest of four hours was won by the Margam players”. Prior to this match a combined team from Pyle and Kenfig recorded a famous victory against the Margam Bando Boys leading to a boisterous celebration in the Guildhall. However, the formation of rugby clubs in the 1870s signalled the fading of bando’s glory, although the game lingered on and continued to be played until the end of the 19th century. Hi all, I would like to start by wishing you a Happy New Year. Here’s some thoughts: I love the Christmas season. I love the family time, relaxing time, opening gifts and watching my favourite Christmas movies. Probably like many others I was looking forward to it. The way it always works of course however, is the way Christmas comes to us. You can guarantee that around the beginning of December the movies etc... start to come. It got me thinking about how Jesus came to us. The Bible says that at the “right time” Jesus came to die for the sins of mankind.

For us now that “right time” is anytime you decide to respond to him coming for you. Christmas comes to us; Jesus comes to us. You probably responded to Christmas; you can also respond to Him. So proud of my niece Taya, who sat in John Street Porthcawl and also Bridgend, reading children’s stories to raise money for the people in the Philippines. She was in the Gazette and was asked to turn on the Christmas lights in Bridgend town. Well done Taya Teresa! May God bless you! Neil Harvey

Tools for Africa On December 12th we were very pleased to receive a platform loading buggy for the workshop. This was a gift to us from the Inner Wheel We were able to use it for the first time loading crates into the TFSR van which had itself

been a gift from Rotary to the Southampton HQ. That occasion marked the visit of our group co-ordinator and deputy CEO on their annual visit. We were pleased to see a DVD of our tools in use in Tanzania. Our December shipment was destined for partners

in Zambia and consisted of carpentry, auto mechanics, bricklaying and building kits, along with much haberdashery and renovated sewing machines. At short notice we were asked to prepare more carpentry kits for emergency house re-builds. The photograph shows the kind of tools that go into a carpentry kit. We are always short of G.clamps, wood vices, breast drills, brace bits, combination and jack planes, chisels, old saws and saw sets. So when clearing out please think of us!. Workshops are on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, volunteers are always welcome. For information contact John at 786367 or please view the charity website www.tfsr.org. John Hanson

Life with Porthcawl Lions Yet another Christmas is over and we all look forward to a busy, successful 2014. By the time you read this the Lions Christmas activities will be over, hopefully having been a success. Father Christmas has told the club that he was very busy in the grotto and thanks all the boys and girls who came to see him. Porthcawl Lions would like to thank the Y-Centre for allowing Santa to have his grotto there and also the Hi-Tide for once again hosting the Boxing Day fun run. Already some events have been planned for the year ahead: in April there will be a grand book sale in Awel-y-Mor, the May Fayre will be held in

All Saints Church on 5th May. June is the month for the annual golf day at the Grove and there will, hopefully, be a classic car fair - if a venue can be found. These and other events will keep members busy until the grotto and fun run come round again. All these things could not happen without a lot of hard work from all concerned and the club would really welcome new members this year. Most importantly, though, no event can be a success without the support of the public, so thank you to all of you who have supported us in the past and please, please continue to do so this year. New defibrillator for Porthcawl church Trinity Church Porthcawl has recently purchased a defibrillator in memory of Maureen Thomas who sadly passed away in December last year. Maureen was a very special lady loved by all who

knew her and no fitting way could be found to honour her memory than the purchase of this machine designed to save the lives of others. All groups using the church have been asked to nominate representatives for training and the first session took place this month with over thirty people in attendance. The church also wishes to acknowledge a donation received from Brian Thomas Undertakers that helped to make this purchase possible. Trinity has again demonstrated its service to the community of Porthcawl.Well done Trinity. Clive Mort

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Phil Powell feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Bridgend & the surrounding area and 3KLO LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW KLV approach is a major factor

in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

FINANCE Making the most of your finances? Keeping your tax bill to a minimum is not a matter of aggressive or complex tax schemes, but rather of identifying which of the many tax reliefs and allowances specifically granted by law are available to you. Here are some ways to help you retain more of your hard-earned money. Check your tax code: If applicable, look at your pay slip or ask your tax office for a coding notice. If you’re not sure of its accuracy, query it; you can claim back overpaid tax for up to four years. Maximise personal allowances: Make the most of your individual tax-free personal allowance (PA). If your spouse or registered civil partner has little or no income, consider transferring incomeproducing assets to them to ensure that they are able to make full use of their PA. Make the most of your Individual Savings Accounts

(ISA): Up to £11,520 can be invested in an ISA this tax year. All investments held in ISAs are free of Capital Gains Tax (CGT). The new Junior ISA (JISA), for those aged under 18 who do not have a Child Trust Fund account, allows investment of up to £3,720 in 2013/14. Use your Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowance: Make the most of your CGT exemption limit each year. It may be possible to transfer assets to a spouse or registered civil partner, or hold them in joint names prior to any sale to make full use of exemptions. Get a tax boost for your pension contributions: If you are a UK taxpayer, you will receive tax relief on pension contributions of up to 100 per cent of your earnings or a £50,000 annual allowance (reducing to £40,000 in the next tax year) whichever is lower.

So you think you know about Equity Release? Equity Release is the area of specialist advice which is possibly the least understood. Whilst many people realise that it is the process of releasing equity from one’s property, the mechanics of how it all works are rarely fully understood. Since Hodge Bank launched the first type of Equity Release nearly 50 years ago, way back in 1965, the market has moved on to become almost unrecognisable, offering tailored solutions for so many people. At the same time, the misconceptions abound. Many think Equity Release is not safe. That is absolutely not true and whilst it may not be the solution for everyone, the sector is possibly the most regulated area of advice in financial services. Indeed, all Equity Release advisers have to pass stringent examinations in order to be licensed to offer advice, whilst providers must comply with huge regulatory requirements, to protect the client’s best interests. Some believe Equity Release

puts your home at risk. Again this is simply not true and the schemes are all required to provide concrete guarantees and tenure for life. No-one can be forcibly removed from their property if they undertake an approved Equity Release scheme and stick within the requirements, whilst all such schemes carry a no negative equity guarantee. You can even have interest-only options these days. Equity Release can also be used for property purchase and can help older people move home later in life. All advisers and product providers must work to a strict code of conduct and all Equity Release business is overseen by an independent legal expert before completion. Many people who simply don’t know where to get advice. I have been providing solutions for my clients for well over ten years, one of a small number of suitably qualified professionals in this area. Call me on 01656-782545 for an informal chat – it could provide the answer to your needs.

Some things you need to know about ISAs An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is a simple way of earning more interest on your savings than you would otherwise receive from a bank account. You are also not required to pay tax on any profits you make from the investment. For the tax year 2013/2014, adults in the UK are permitted to invest up to £11,520 into an ISA. The full amount can be invested in a stocks and shares ISA, whilst half (£5,760) can be placed in a cash ISA. Due to the tax free nature of Seaside News | 26

the returns from an ISA, it is recommended that you use your full allowance each year, as any remaining allowance cannot be carried over to the following year. If you decide to withdraw money from a cash ISA, it is important to note that the ISA cannot then be replenished to the full amount. As an example, if you paid £4,000 into an ISA over the course of the year before withdrawing £2,500, you would not then be able to pay £2,500 back into

the ISA as this would take you over your allowance of £5,760. If you’re considering transferring your funds from one cash ISA into a new one, firstly be sure to check the new ISA allows inbound transfers, and secondly, rather than transferring the money by withdrawing it from the original ISA, inform your new

ISA provider of your intention and complete a transfer form. This will ensure your ISA retains its tax-free status. Topstak launches tree planting crusade

November has been a busy month for committee members, our intrepid lady gardeners make sure that the gardens in front of Cliff Cottage are kept up to scratch, whatever the weather. Bulbs have been planted for a spring showing. The lawns have been treated and had the last cut. Other members have prepared for Christmas celebrations by decorating the main hall in readiness for Christmas parties, we have regular users, all enjoy the social get-togethers this time of year. Our annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Greenacres Hotel in Cornelly on 6th December, we enjoyed a fantastic meal, and the staff were superb, thank you to them. Meanwhile we have scaffolding around part of the building as

Inspired by the recent National Tree Week and the work of the Woodland Trust, interiors and stove specialist, Topstak, plans to start a tree planting campaign. The Cowbridge based business aims to plant a tree for every

their land, and we feel that we would like to do more to help revive the dwindling number of native trees in this country by starting a tree planting project.” The problem of Ash dieback and Oak wilt is another reason

one of its hand-made log stores sold online. “At Topstak we are very much involved in sustainability,” explains director, Adam Pedersen. “Renewable energy forms a significant part of our business, and the wood we sell for our wood burning stoves comes from sustainable sources.” “My parents, who founded the business, have planted many native deciduous trees on

why Topstak is keen to plant more trees. “Our native trees face a huge amount of pressure, not only from development and road building, but from diseases such as the much publicised Ash die back. We also lost millions of trees to Dutch Elm disease. Our tree campaign will be a small contribution towards redressing the balance.” www.topstak.co.uk

the chimney stacks needed attention. Builders have repaired one, and will be repairing the second, very necessary, as the winter takes hold and winds get stronger. Although, our part of the country seems to have missed the extreme weather, we have to think of fellow gardeners, they have had to endure floods in their homes, gardens and allotments we must count our blessings. Some relevant information, whilst membership stays at £5. From 1st January 2014 the committee has decided to increase rental fees. Regular users and members booking fees from £10 to £12 per session. Occasional bookings are £20. Gwen Bradford Laleston Gardening Club

Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club In January your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale force winds and heavy rain (150mm average for us!) so batten down the hatches and don’t forget our feathered friends, as food is scarce for them in winter. If you haven’t any snowdrops in your garden but next door has, be cheeky and beg some, snowdrops can be lifted and divided as long as you replant them straight away, so pretty! Fruit trees are dormant now so it’s a good time to do a bit of pruning, cut back the new growth to one of two buds, plus branches that are twisted; this will increase light and airflow for a good crop later in

the year. Don’t forget to brush any snowfall from your conifers to prevent damage (one thing about snow is it makes your garden look as good as your neighbours!) Did you know the recorded number of injuries in the UK in 2005 caused by vegetables that necessitated hospital treatment was 14,149! They’re fighting back! My New Year’s resolution – Dear God, my prayer for 2014 is a fat bank balance and a thin body please don’t mix them up again this year! Happy New Year fellow gardeners! Chris Early

LEGAL Court alternatives for family disputes A recent poll shows that couples risk increasing the stress and cost of divorce settlements because of a “worrying lack of awarenessâ€? about a wide variety of noncourt based solutions according to relationship experts. There is “patchy understandingâ€? and “ill-founded scepticismâ€? about alternatives to going to court during break-ups according to a new poll commissioned by Resolution – the body representing 6,500 family law professionals in England and Wales. The problem is made worse by recent cuts to legal aid, meaning that “fewer couples have access to free legal advice, and so fewer people are being directed by solicitors towards solutions other than court.â€? This is despite the fact that for many couples, avoiding a lengthy courtroom battle can reduce stress and can result in signiďŹ cant ďŹ nancial savings. It is estimated that over 115,000 people each year could save money and stress during relationship break ups if they

are made fully aware of all their options. It is easy to access mediation services. You can ask your solicitor to refer you to a mediator or you can contact the mediator direct. The mediator will usually offer you an initial appointment alone, this is known as a “MIAM (Mediation Information Assessment Meeting) at which you can discuss the process and make a decision about whether mediation is going to work for you. If you are happy to proceed, you will then be invited to an appointment with your former partner during which you will attempt to resolve your issues with the assistance of the mediator. The removal of legal aid for family disputes has caused a reduction in the people attending mediation. However, mediation can be a cost effective alternative to court based alternatives as it usually enables parties to reach agreement sooner and without the stress of attending court. Madeline Rand

“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART HEART

DON’T BE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD IF YOU’VE LOST A LOVED ONE THIS WINTER, WE CAN HELP... Unfortunately it is a fact of life that many of us will lose a loved one this time of year. This emotional rollercoaster is difďŹ cult enough without having to worry about winding up a relative’s ďŹ nancial estate. The administration of an estate is often a time consuming and frustrating process, particularly if it is a complex matter, and consists of a number of stages:1. Is there a Will? The ďŹ rst step is to determine whether or not there is a Will. If there is, then this will appoint a person(s) who will be responsible for dealing with the estate, the Executor. If there is no Will, then the law of intestacy will determine who the responsible person is, the Administrator. 2. Valuation The next stage is to ascertain exactly what assets are in the estate. This will involve writing to any ďŹ nancial institutions, instructing surveyors to value any property, and liaising with accountants regarding the valuation of any business assets held. 3. Inheritance Tax Once the value of the estate has been calculated, it is then necessary to account to HM Revenue and Customs for the payment of any inheritance tax which may be due. 4. Application for Probate On completion of any tax affairs, the person responsible for the estate can then apply for Probate (or Letters of Administration if there is no Will). This is the Court Order which proves that the Executor is entitled to deal with the estate and give a receipt for the proceeds of the various assets. 5. Closure of assets Following receipt of the Grant of Probate, the person responsible for the estate can then cash in any assets, deal with the sale of any property and settle any debts that the deceased may have had. During this period it is also necessary to wind up any income tax affairs. 6. Distribute the estate Only when the Executor is satisďŹ ed that all steps have been taken to deal with the above, can they then distribute the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will (or the law relating to intestacy). At Douglas-Jones Mercer, we have been administering estates since 1946, and believe that you should concentrate on looking after yourself when you have lost a loved one, and let us concentrate on the ďŹ nancial affairs.

ArtiďŹ cial sweeteners Are you using artiďŹ cial sweeteners and opting for lowcal ‘diet’ foods in an effort to control of your weight? If so, you may be surprised to learn that research has repeatedly shown that artiďŹ cial no- or low-calorie sweeteners are anything but good news for weight loss‌ Contrary to popular belief, studies have found that artiďŹ cial sweeteners such as aspartame can: - Stimulate your appetite - Increase carbohydrate cravings - Stimulate fat storage and weight gain Now, yet another study has been published showing that saccharin and aspartame cause greater weight gain than sugar.

The belief that artiďŹ cially sweetened foods and beverages will help you lose weight is a carefully orchestrated deception. So if you are still opting for ‘diet’ choices for this reason, you are being sorely misled. Ditto for diabetics, as recent research has shown aspartame also worsens insulin sensitivity. The fact that these are still being promoted as ‘diet’ ies in the face of any rational behaviour. One wonders why the FTC doesn’t come down like a ton of bricks on these companies for massively fraudulent marketing. Taken from: ďŹ tlife.tv/ artiďŹ cial-sweetners. YOUNG’S SPINAL HEALTH ADVICE FOR JANUARY The first Monday in January is invariably the busiest day in the gym and you’ll be hard pressed to get on your favourite machine. This enthusiasm however, is often short lived. Sometimes, it’s not just a general dip in motivation that causes us to slowly break our resolutions, but underlying musculoskeletal aches and pains, only made worse by periods of inactivity.

WALKER

SPINAL HEALTH CENTRE Love Chiropractic – Think Spinal Health

There is now a wealth of evidence that points to aerobic exercise, strengthening and Chiropractic treatment helping those with low back pain. If you want to make the most of improving your fitness and wellbeing this coming new year then make sure you are “gym ready” first. Here are a few points:1. Stretch – Make sure you stretch before and after an exercise routine. By stretching before it helps prevent injury whilst exercising, whereas stretching after helps to prevent the onset of post exercise soreness and muscle tension. Note, hold a stretch for 10 seconds and don’t bob back and fore as this can cause micro tears in the muscle and ligaments.

2. Warm up – Always build up to the physical peak of your activity, never throw yourself straight into high cardiac output or heavy weights.

14 Lias Road, Porthcawl CF36 3AH walkerspinalhealth.com

A better Choice, A Better Life

3. Choose your exercise carefully – If you have a pre-existing problem discuss the exercise programme with your Chiropractor. For example, if you have had a history of knee, hip or low back problems, running isn’t for you. Instead choose a type of exercise that puts less impact on the joints such as using a cross trainer or swimming. If you know you have heart or lung problems, it is advisable to speak with your general practitioner first. 4. Musculoskeletal preparation - If you have “a niggle” or even a “slight ache” it is advisable that you see your chiropractor before starting a new exercise regime. That slight ache is your body telling you that something isn’t right. By ignoring it and exercising regardless can cause more damage.

To make sure the residents of Bridgend are best equipped to be “gym ready” Young’s Spinal Health has attached a voucher for the first consultation and treatment. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Stag’s World of Rock This month, I want to reflect on the death of Stan Stennett. I was lucky enough as a teenager to work with Stan, doing eight shows a week in a three-month summer

season at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. My career was just starting, but Stan was already a big star, having been one of the highest-paid comedians in the 60s. He also helped to pave the way to stardom for his great friends Morecambe and Wise. As well as being an accomplished musician, Stan was a great actor and

Ghosts of Glamorgan at The Prince won awards for his part in the drama “Leeds United” and also appeared in Coronation Street. But it is for the playing of the character Sid Hooper in the hit soap opera Crossroads that Stan became a household name, reaching a regular audience of millions. Even recently Stan was still performing, and for the last six decades he has been in pantomime as Billy and Bonzo. Although I would be touring with my band Secret Army, our paths would often cross. Stan always had a warm welcome for you, and what was perhaps most important of all, he was also happy to give opportunities to up-andcoming Welsh artists. A true Welsh great! The Prince of Wales in Kenfig is well-known for ghostly happenings. Apart from being a public house, its upstairs room used to be the old Town Hall, in which dances and

other festivities were held, as well as trials carried out for local felons, so it is not hard to imagine the emotional energy that has been expended within its four walls in times gone by. But the curious tale that found its way into the film “Ghosts of Glamorgan” concerns a voice from the past heard by landlord Gareth Maund late one winter’s night as he was about to lock up. A man distinctly called out “Good

was the name of a previous landlord who had died some time ago. The voice called out insistently several times, but there was no one out there in the darkness. It was as if he had overheard a late night farewell from years ago. For more information, go to www. downwoodfilms.com. Anthony Hontoir

Porthcawl Runners news There were 16 members taking part in the 2nd West Glam X/C meeting of the season. Everybody enjoyed the course and it was the first time Porthcawl Runners have competed in Singleton Park as the event has not been held here for over ten years. Both mens and ladies teams are going to find it difficult again to hold on to their position in their respective divisions as the standard of running has improved again this year. Gabriella Maine and Rebecca Hambrook were making a welcome return to the ladies team and with a rejuvenated Jeff Thomas leading home the men’s team, it looks increasingly likely that

it’s going to be a repeat of last year’s finale, which saw both teams secure their division one status on the final day. A new power walking group, under the guidance of Sarah Edwards, has formed at the club and has proved to be very popular. If you are interested in getting fit and want to make a start with this section you are most welcome to come along on one of the training nights. TAP It Out Cycle Club Already in to our second month of Tap It Out Cycle Club and the club is moving at a fast and furious pace and not just in the saddle. Behind the scenes we have secured sponsorships from various firms in the area. First Aid training for all members, a cycling efficiency seminar conducted by the Onitsports express Stephan Pang will be rolled out in the new year. Also talks are in motion with Fabian Cancellara of the Radioshackleopard team for a ride and answer/question session. Club rides have been well attended and the Wednesday night chaingang is going from strength to strength. Some testing rides with serious

hill climbing have all been conquered and all members are eagerly anticipating the next challenge. A big pat on the back goes to thunder thighs Lee Smith who hasn’t missed a ride and continues to split the peloton with devastating effect week in week out. Saturday rides start at 9am and Wednesday night at 7pm from the Tap in Pyle. All very welcome. Any questions please email me on nickemorgan@ hotmail.co.uk Keep on tapping. Nicky Morgan
