PARKING IN BLUE BADGE SPACES Dear Editor, Please see pictures taken at Rest Bay on the 9th May. When, may I ask did council workers have priority over blue badge holders? People have blue badges for a reason. These able bodied council workers could easily have parked in the car Park at Rest bay and left these spaces for those that need them. J W Amos, North Cornelly

PORTHCAWL - THE HAPPY TOWN Dear Editor, I was recently talking to a married couple on the seafront who were from Lancashire, they were on a week’s coach tour staying at the Sea Bank. I asked them what they thought of Porthcawl on their visit to the town. They were pleasantly impressed and liked the layout of the prom and especially the beautiful flower beds. They were also impressed with the Pavilion and other buildings along the front. They said that they were not only taken with the great variety of shops along John Street in particular the shop Bliss with its wonderful selection of gifts to choose from, but what they really noticed was the friendly atmosphere, people chatting to one another, laughing, everybody seemed spontaneously happy and it was a joy to behold. They stated that they would not only retain memories from Porthcawl as a delightful and attractive town but as a ‘happy town’. This accolade stems from the people of Porthcawl themselves, for their warmth and affection, their great interest and involvement in the town and their pride in their town. This has created a happy town and this status and title should be maintained for the future and advertised accordingly. Finally the people of Porthcawl should be congratulated for making it a ‘happy town’. I think perhaps it would be appropriate to say Porthcawl is the greatest! John Jenkins, Porthcawl

RE: PAINT THE BOTTLE BANK Dear Editor, In response to Douglas Davies letter demanding that Esplanade House “must be painted white or cream” and therefore would no longer look “so grotesquely out of place”, I would propose that other landlords take the lead from the statement building and paint their buildings bright seaside colours. Porthcawl hasn’t the grand Georgian architecture that is typical of a cream and white town; we should embrace what we have and make it unique and quirky. A bank of colour along the Esplanade would greet all with a sense of positivity and charm. Even when it’s raining. Tabitha Frazer Blanks, Porthcawl

NEW RECYCLING AND WASTE COLLECTIONS Dear Editor, It is good of Bridgend County Borough Council to issue new information booklets on how we are to recycle our household waste. The information is telling us we are going to have new colour coded bags and a caddy, this is fine, but what we are allowed to place in these bags is unclear and ludicrous. In the white bag goes paper as instructed in the new leaflet, so can anybody please explain to me which part of wallpaper or paper towels isn’t paper? In the black caddy goes glass, but again can anybody explain to me which part of a drinking glass isn’t glass? As far as I am concerned BCBC want its voters to recycle as much as possible in order to reduce land fill waste, but paper is paper, and glass is glass, so what is BCBC playing at? If you add up all the ‘recyclable’ waste the council will not allow Kier to pick up from the curbside, the blue bags will fill fairly quickly, so will two bags a fortnight be enough? I can foresee fly tipping growing as a real problem. Then the council will begin to moan and maybe do something about it. People will also not be allowed to take waste in bags up to land fill, but in order to use the old black boxes they will be asked to recycle the waste themselves. This will cause longer delays at landfill sites. In my eyes we are paying Council Tax, but not getting an appropiate service. Gordon Ezra, Porthcawl

SAFETY HAZARD - METAL BINS ON PORTHCAWL SEA FRONT Dear Editor, The metal bins on Porthcawl Sea Front, which are in a poor state of repair, represent a significant safety risk to passing pedestrians, particularly young children. Of most concern is the securing arrangement for the heavy metal doors, which are either defective or not being used, as most bin doors appear to be normally left open and free to swing (unconstrained) in the wind. Today, in strong winds, I observed a metal door swing open with some force and narrowly miss a child - It is only a matter of time before ones of these doors causes a serious injury. As a matter of urgency BCBC should ensure these bin doors are properly and safely secured (as the design intended). If this is not achievable promptly, then the doors should be removed. In their current state the metal bin doors don’t appear to offer any functionality, other than being a significant safety hazard. G Hill, Porthcawl

Letters BIN HELL Dear Editor, I’m sure you must have all seen by now The recycling leaflet the where, when and how, This is the thing of which I’m afraid, The idea has come from someone who was paid!!

I don’t object to recycling but This has been thought of by some kind of nut, The leaflet itself says the targets ambitious, But the council have just made it vicious. A change and increase in recycling bags, To put them all out will cause us to flag, And what should I do with the boxes they sent, Perhaps I should start charging the council rent. Half of the rubbish you cant even recycle, I really do think that they are taking the Michael, I think of the birthdays and Christmas paper, to get rid of that will be a real caper. A fortnightly collection of nappies and absorbent waste, In plastic bags they must be placed, Do they know how many nappies a baby goes through? And the other products i’m sure people don’t want us to view. I feel for the people with medical conditions, Did the council think if this when they started these missions? Is it hygienic to leave this around? Creating a haven a rodents playground. I also don’t want the whole street to know when, my ‘time of the month’ comes around again, How degrading and positively thoughtless they have been To put it in plastic bags through which it can now be seen. The one thing I thought which we can all do, to get rid of an used light bulb or two, Send them to the council the Welsh Government too, With a short note ‘These are brighter than you’. Each team of 2 pupils from Year 6, had come through local heats and were answering questions on a different book. In a very close competition, 2 teams achieved 100% in the first round and had to answer a further 5 questions in Round 2. The eventual winners were Garth Primary and runners up were Pîl Primary. The Shield, certificates and goody bags were presented by Cllr Michael Clarke who was very impressed with the teamwork and knowledge shown by all children taking part. Congratulations

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM On 31st July 1917, the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendaele began. It would last for 4 months and would prove to be one long horrendous struggle amidst heavy rainfall and treacherous mud. During the opening attack on Pilkhem Ridge, two local men lost their lives. Captain Ralph Picton Daniels, 17th Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 18 Fenton Place, Porthcawl was killed in action. Before November was out, six

more Porthcawlians would fall on the battlefield. Yet, it was not another Porthcawlian who died on that first day that deserves special mention. Corporal James Llewelyn Davies, 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, for ‘a conspicuous act of extreme bravery’ was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross; the highest award for bravery in the Commonwealth. Corporal Davies was born at Fronwen, Ogmore Vale on 16th March 1886. A coalminer by trade, he married Elizabeth Richards in 1906 and they had three daughters and one son. On 12th October 1914, James enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery, transferring to the RWF in June 1915. Private Davies was promoted to the rank of Corporal eleven days before his death. He still remains Bridgend County’s only recipient of the Victoria Cross. Cerin Joseph

ST CLARE’S BOYS ARE NATIONAL WINNERS OF SHELL’S BRIGHT IDEAS CHALLENGE St Clare’s, Porthcawl are national winners of Shell’s “Bright Ideas Challenge” again and won third place across the UK. Winning team Chipachapachino comprised four Year 9 boys: Theo Quantick (Captain), Ben Jones, Dylan Walker and Dan Wigglesworth. As well as winning £3,000 to super-size STEM learning, they also won a tablet each and a fully funded trip. The boys flew up to London with Physics teachers, Michael Gatt and Grant Jones to attend Make the Future Live, Shell’s festival of ideas and innovation at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. As well as exciting hands-on activities and science shows the winners got to access a range of exclusive VIP experiences and met Rachel Riley! Team Captain, Theo Quantick, said, “The Bright Ideas Challenge really got us thinking about the future we’ll be living in. It’s inspiring to see how the things we’ve learnt about in Science can change the world. The whole school is excited about the money we’ve won and the difference it will make to our Science lessons”. SUMMER TERM IN CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL It continues to be a busy Summer Term at Cefn Cribwr School. Our drama club have been practising for their production of “The Sound of Music” under the watchful eye of Mrs. Evans. The children have learnt their lines and songs ready for their first show to the public in July. Everyone is so excited for the live performances! Our cricket teams recently competed in Kwik Cricket competitions at Newbridge Fields. The children had wonderful days and can’t wait to play more cricket. The rugby side recently played in a festival at Sardis Road, Pontypridd organised by our friends at Alaw Primary. They had a great day with tough games all played with pace and total enjoyment. Finally, we would like to thank the extraordinary generosity of our community for supporting two recent events. Our P.T.A. fete was a wonderful afternoon and its’ success was due to the hard work of the P.T.A. The community came out in huge support of the charity rugby match between ex Cefn pupils and a Select XV. The generosity and support of these two events is truly humbling and thank you all. OLDCASTLE CHILDREN ENJOY FRUIT AND VEG AT BREAK TIMES! Oldcastle Primary School has a brand new fruit and veg shop courtesy of Tesco Bags of Help scheme. The wooden shop is situated in the main playground and year 5 children have been tasked with selling fruit and vegetables during their morning break times. Children in the juniors are thoroughly enjoying purchasing fruit throughout the break times. The year 5 children are really getting into the enterprise project and look forward to selling to the friends. As a school we encourage all our children to adopt a healthy lifestyle and it is fantastic to see so many children purchasing the fruit. The school were delighted to receive funding from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. “It is amazing to see the children so enthusiastic about our small enterprise project and also encouraging children to eat healthy. It is pleasing to see so many children enjoying apples, pears, bananas, carrot sticks and oranges throughout their break time. CORNELI PRIMARY NEWS What a busy half term this has been! Year 6 children learned about keeping safe at Crucial Crew, foundation classes had a super day at Mountain View Ranch on the Gruffalo Trail, building dens and toasting marshmallows and Year 4 children’s library challenge culminated in a quiz and penalty shoot-out. The Walking Bus took us to school, Years 4 and 5 have been swimming and we had fun on an outdoor learning day. Visitors from the golf museum in Scotland told us about the Ladies Championship event and some children even got to polish the trophies! Robots, Pepper and Si also visited and it was very exciting to see some of the amazing things they could do. We are looking forward to working with them in the future. Congratulations go to Luke Wallis, Kasey-Lea, Thomas-Humphries and Austin Thomas prize winners in the Urdd Art Competition, well done too to everyone who entered as all the artwork was fantastic. Fantastic too was the news that following an assessment day, we have been given the prestigious Eco-Schools Platinum Award for our environmental work and our thanks go to all who have contributed over the years towards this valuable achievement. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

We are delighted that PCS has become only the second comprehensive in Wales to be awarded the SWGfL 360° Safety Online Mark. Achieving this has meant scrutinising the work the school does ensuring that pupils, staff, and anyone linked to the school, are as safe as possible when using ICT in all forms. Over the last two years we have raised awareness of online safety issues with pupils, staff, parents/carers and the wider community. Pupils have worked particularly hard – creating assemblies, designing posters and writing newsletter articles and the E-safety Committee, Digital Leaders, staff and governors have all been part of this exciting achievement. Towards the end of June, Year 12 enjoyed the two day Career Pathways Induction Programme. This involved 18 experienced volunteers from the U3A from professions such as engineering, teaching, medicine and the police coming into school to interview our pupils in preparation for university/ apprenticeships and job applications. Pupils had to dress appropriately for interview and feedback was given immediately to help improve their applications. Speakers from Universities, Careers Wales and the RAF also attended and thank you to Malcolm Cowper and the U3A volunteers for their much valued contribution. Music pupils from younger years returned from London recently where they cruised on the River Thames, watched the musical ‘Wicked’ and explored Windsor Castle. GETTING CREATIVE! Pil Primary School pupils enjoyed a creative and fun workshop on Tuesday 13th June, bringing their topic work to life using Jumping Clay. The soft and light air dry clay was completely mess free but just as effective to produce realistic and magnetic products. Year 3 used a range of colours and forms to produce aeroplanes, trains and cars as part of their travel topic. Year 4 created bones, model eyes and organs to reinforce their work on blood bones and gory bits. Years 5 and 6 were just as enthusiastic to make gallery inspired master pieces and World War models. The Foundation Phase pupils are looking forward to using their imagination on Wednesday 21st June when they take part in the make and take Jumping Clay workshop. CYNFFIG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL “You’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so... get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss, ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go!’ Summer term 2017 has been an extremely busy but exciting one. Artist Nathan Wyburn from Britain’s Got Talent worked with pupils in their art lessons. Techniquest scientists visited and challenged Year 9 pupils to create special effects for a movie. Ben Jackson, Ben Dale, Elis Bentley and Molly Lacey Year 8 received certificates for being in the top 40% of the Junior UKMT Challenge. Year 6 September starters visited our school for our ‘Helping Hands’ programme. And finally to Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 pupils who conducted themselves maturely and with focus in completing GCSE, AS and A level exams respectively. To our Year 13 pupils we say ‘Farewell’ after 7 fantastic years of shared learning. They have been a pleasure to work with and have made our school all the richer and stronger. We have genuinely enjoyed their company and hope that we have been a big part in shaping their future. With continued perseverance, determination and effort I know you will succeed. AFON Y FELIN NEWS Our entries in the recent Urdd Eisteddfod did spectacularly well. Four of our entries reaching the final stage at Pencoed! Our Cerdd Dant was placed first in the preliminary and regional rounds, as was Ellis on piano and Eve’s poetry recital, and our Art entry was placed overall 1st! Excellent for an English medium school, and a wonderful experience for our children. Mr. Urdd heard of our success and came to visit our school, a lovely surprise for all the children who had worked so hard. Diolch Mrs Jones! In the Big Pedal we came first in the cluster, 5th in Bridgend, and 28th in Wales. Our Oaks had a workshop, universe and space, Year 4 attended a penalty shootout in Cynffig Comprehensive, and Year 6 attended Crucial Crew, a valuable lesson which teaches about emergency situations. Dosbarth Deri have been to Renishaw Engineering and saw robots created for brain surgery. They have also spent two days in Pencoed, courtesy of Sony, they made a short film about healthy eating and learned about coding. What an exciting few weeks it has been. Our thanks to triathlete, Helen Jenkins, for coming along to school on our Health and Fitness day and talking to us about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Bridgend recently hosted the Urdd National Eisteddfod. Well done to everyone who took part, as a competitor, as a cast member of the Junior Show, ‘Bracchi’ or for some of our youngest pupils as part of the Children’s Pageant. Our ‘Teulu Llangynwyd’ stall, showcasing some of the work of each Welsh medium school in the county borough was very popular, with numerous visitors all through the week. The Eisteddfod has been hailed a huge success and we are thrilled to have been a part of such a special event. Junior pupils visited Seaquest at Porthcawl and both visits were a big hit with the children. What a valuable resource to have on our doorstep, giving us the opportunity to explore the natural environment and learn more about our coastline. Thank you to all at Seaquest for a fantastic learning experience. Years 3 & 4 also thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Urdd Jamboree and Year 6 their Crucial Crew experience. Ceri Thomas

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL During the summer term, year 5&6 studied the exciting curriculum topic entitled ‘Summer Camp’. This is based around the creation of an original campsite on the school grounds with associated shelters, tents, food and songs. The children developed a variety of different skills including research, planning, innovation and working as part of a team. We also had an amazing visit the Wild Spirit Bush Craft center in Merthyr Mawr to engage in shelter building and camp craft activities during the day. We then hiked the 5 miles route back to school across the dunes in time for the end of school. This was a fun experience but a real challenge! All the skills were used used in the preparation of their own campsite in which our younger pupils in year 3&4 were invited to join in the fun. We also had an amazing time during our Year 5/6 residential trip to the five star Abernant Lake Hotel in Powys. We enjoyed three days of outdoor and adventurous activities which included canoeing, climbing, archery and a huge team building obstacle course! Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the experience provided by ‘The Crucial Crew’ workshops organised by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with ‘Resolve it’. PORTHCAWL POWER RACE TO SUCCESS FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING! Last month saw the return of the Formula One in schools South Wales Regional finals in the Swansea Waterfront Museum. As a school we had high expectations after being crowned the U.K. national Champions last June. Added to that was the fact that we were racing in a new category this year after a change to the competition. Our team, Porthcawl Power did an amazing job both on the day and in the weeks leading up to the event. The team were also supported and helped through each stage by the whole of year 5 and 6. They used a Silhouette printer to print out an F1 car out of card and prepared a pit-lane display portfolio and 5 minute presentation. The team’s enthusiasm on the day was a credit to the school and as well as winning the best team image category they designed the fifth fastest car. The competition was fierce with 28 teams taking part so that was a great achievement. The team also came fourth overall which means that Porthcawl Power will once again represent Wales in the U.K finals later in the month at the British Motor Museum in Warwick. I do try to recycle my waste As diligently as I can, But now the scheme’s changed, I’m just going deranged. I’m not sure that I am a fan! The old scheme had black bins to usePlastic, glass, paper, cardboard and food. But new coloured bags With instructions and tags, Are meant to be robust and good. The white bag is only for paperBut not tissues, wallpaper or shiny. The orange is for card, blue for plastics Oh, not too hard! But the bin for the bottles is tiny! Confused, I persevere with the plan And soon I’m the expert and win. My bags are all sorted, The rubbish is thwarted So now I’ll relax with a Gin - maybe two. I’m proud of myself, feeling smug, I carry them out for collection, Imagine my shock When the wind just to mock Blows the bags away in wrong direction. Chasing after them far down the street, I struggle to drag them all back. REMEMBERING STORMY DOWN

CONSERVATIVE OPPOSITION

77 years ago, an RAF base was opened at Stormy Down. Initially called RAF Porthcawl, its name was changed to Stormy Down; many personnel stationed there apparently believing this was because of the local weather, but in fact comes from the name of a medieval lord, Sturmi. Although the weather did play its part in many a crash landing. On 2nd July, thanks to the initiative of the Porthcawl Museum and a band of volunteers, a memorial will be unveiled to commemorate the base and the thousands of servicemen and women from around the UK and overseas who passed through in the short years of its existence. The base was primarily established as a training school; training air gunners and targeting bombs. The site also housed the WAAF and later on in the war, acted as a depot for the Free French. Tragically, 53 were killed in training accidents; 11 of whom are buried at Nottage. Given the survival rate of aircrews, it is thought that upwards of 10% of those trained at the base did not survive the war. Very little of the original buildings remain so this memorial is a timely reminder of their sacrifice.

ON BEHALF of hard-working local campaigners, I’d like to thank those who voted in record numbers for the Conservative candidate in the General Election in the Bridgend constituency and who also helped Conservatives win the largest number of seats on BCBC since the council was first set up in 1996. This 11-strong group is now the official opposition to Labour, which has formed a minority administration despite not having an overall majority – with the election of independents adding to the shake up in the status quo. Already, the Conservative opposition has flexed its muscles at the first full council meeting, demanding a review of the way in which the new refuse and recycling contract is operating and also a review of the budget for the financial year starting April 2018 with a view to reversing the cuts in funding to schools. Both of these motions were passed unanimously with Labour showing a willingness to work with the other groups to try and build a consensus – which is welcome. The council will achieve far more if all its members are allowed to bring their life experience and skills to the table.

SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP A world-class line-up of golfing legends will assemble at Royal Porthcawl between 27th – 30th July for the Senior Open. MUSIC AND ARTWORK AT THE SENEDD Last month, I was delighted to welcome to the Senedd a school choir from Llangewydd Junior School and a number of students from Bridgend College who were exhibiting their work at The Oriel at the Senedd. The school choir consisted of around 40 pupils aged 7 -11 years of age. They were very enthusiastic and had clearly worked hard to learn a repertoire of contemporary English and Welsh songs. There was something for everyone including a Take That song, songs from Matilda The Musical, Calon Lân lyrics sang to the music of Let It Be by The Beatles and songs about Wales. The choir was excellent and attracted quite a crowd to listen to them perform. It was also a great pleasure to welcome students from Bridgend College to the Senedd. The theme of their work was Landscape, Myths and Legends and it was great to see their work on display and to chat to some of the students about their inspiration for their pieces of work. There was art work on display with some fantastic dragons in various guises and a range of photos showing a number of local scenes.

ROLLING OUT THE NEW RECYCLING SCHEME As I write this, residents are getting used to the new recycling and waste service which has been running for 10 days. The council and Kier are also getting to grips with the scheme, and a big part of this involves listening to your feedback and where necessary updating information and procedures. For example, Kier has organised an additional narrow vehicle to ensure that collections from our harder-to-access streets can be completed on schedule, and they have also responded to heavy demand (1,400 requests in one week) for equipment and bags. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT The Community Centre has been so busy over the past few months with so many bookings and events, it is now time to take a breather, and start planning the second half of 2017. We have arranged to celebrate a Coffee Morning member’s significant birthday by having lunch down Penarth Marina, with a chance to take a short stroll around the barrage (not to sober up of course!). We plan to have another day trip in September but where to go is the problem. We are actively reading many leaflets that have accumulated in the office, it could be a ride on a steam train, a boat ride down a river, all will be revealed shortly. Meanwhile, our classes are still well attended, with two bingo sessions each week, two computer classes (for those who consider themselves ‘dinosaurs’) and a weekly Partner Whist group. We also have two ballet & tap classes, one on a Saturday morning for youngsters, and the other on a Tuesday morning, for the not so young adults! FREEMASONRY IN PORTHCAWL Despite the ever-darkening clouds of war, a number of Brethren met in the Porthcawl Hotel on 16th January 1914 to consider the formation of a Lodge in Porthcawl. A warrant was granted on 20th July 1915 and Venables Llewelyn Lodge was consecrated on Saturday 3rd June 1916. The Lodge was formed at the behest of local businessmen, and Brethren from the Cardiff and Penarth area, who were members of the Porthcawl Golf Club. These Brethren stayed in Porthcawl over the weekends to play golf, hence the choice of Saturday as Lodge night. During World War II many American Servicemen were stationed in Porthcawl, including the 107th Field Artillery Battalion. Numerous Brethren from fourteen different Grand Lodges in the USA visited the Lodge in 1944. Until the end of 1965 Venables Llewelyn Lodge was the only Lodge in Porthcawl. The first daughter Lodge, Lodge of Sker was consecrated on 9th November 1965. Two further daughter Lodges followed, Newton Lodge and Kenfig Lodge. Nottage Lodge and Llanilltud Fawr Lodge have followed. Porthcawl Freemasons will be holding open days on Saturday 9th and 23rd September. The Masonic Hall will be open for viewing. All welcome. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey folks, over the coming months I thought I would share some words from my book Uncaged! Uncaged! is going into every prison in the UK and is also used in some schools. Uncaged! is the story of my miraculous conversion and transformation. Alone for long periods in my cell, my thoughts were strange and conflicting. I was still trying to figure out a way to change my life. One day, it all came to a head. Out of nowhere, I heard a voice. It was clear and very strong. “Don’t you remember who you are?” Asked the voice. Then, as if I were watching a movie of my life, pictures came flooding into my mind. Then with that the voice spoke to me again. “If you want a second chance I can give you another chance.” Suddenly, I began to see how things could be different. Hope started to well up in me. Light started to shine. Excitement began to increase as more questions came. “Can it be possible? Can I change? Who is speaking to me?” I asked. “Jesus”, replied the voice. I was flooded with joy and hope as I saw a door opened up in front of me. “I have to take this,” I thought. I was coming home to God. With fine weather, improving as the day progressed, the Porthcawl Lions Club Annual Golf Tournament proved a great success when held recently at the Grove Golf Club. The Lions Cup was won by Mike House, attending with team members from Hereford Lions Club. PORTHCAWL U3A High summer in sunny Porthcawl, and the 500+ residents who are members of U3A are enjoying the good times - learning, having fun and making new friends. Last month there was a well-attended talk about Kenfig Nature Reserve given by the warden; the Sunday lunch group enjoyed a convivial gathering at the Angel at Mawdlam; Friday evenings saw our popular debating programme; there was an interesting excursion to Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire; and some musically inclined members visited the Welsh Proms at St David’s Hall. Plus, there were some 94 meetings of interest groups at venues across Porthcawl covering 41 different activities from creative writing to crafts, painting to photography. Whilst we’re out and about at this time of the year we’re often asked “What is U3A?” Well, U3A stands for University of the Third Age. The word ‘university’ is used here in the original sense of the word - a group of people learning together. To trust that ‘God is with us’ doesn’t mean that our lives will be sheltered from pain and suffering. It doesn’t mean that people who are close to us won’t hurt us. And it doesn’t mean that our lives will run according to plan. Whilst trusting ‘God is with us,’ we should still prepare ourselves for some sorrowful circumstances and unearned suffering. In the Old Testament story, Joseph was despised and sold into slavery by his own brothers. And yet God was with him even if God did not protect him from brotherly envy, unjust slavery and false imprisonment. What we have to celebrate is not that ‘God with us’ shields us from misfortune, but that ‘God with us’ never forsakes us even as we live through our ordeals. There is nothing worse than suffering in isolation. But even in our darkest hours, God is with us. There is nothing more tragic than suffering with no purpose. But beyond our pain, God has a purpose that will not be denied. Let the day bring what it will, but our conviction that God is with us never cease! PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS I am writing this on Election Day and hoping everyone will use their vote for which the Suffragists fought so hard many years ago! At our meeting in May members were asked how they would vote on the mandate on Fracking Regulations, which will be debated at the national AGM in Sheffield. This will give our delegate, Diana Richardson, some guidance and there will also be a discussion in Sheffield on the possibility of abolishing the changing of the clock time each year. Our President, Joyce Webb, presented chairman Diana Richardson with her 25 year membership badge and certificate. Dee has been our treasurer for many years and now chairman for the second time. We welcomed back Debra John as our speaker. Her stories of Welsh Myths kept everyone fascinated and amused. So much so that she is already booked again for next year! Our meeting this month is on July 12th when our Craft group will be giving a demonstration. This has been very popular the last two years so do come along and try your hand at various crafts. FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa

If we stacked all our eleven crates on top of each other with the three tea chests full of haberdashery we would have a tower 18 feet high (nearly 6 metres). Trouble is we couldn’t lift the crates up that high. This represents the work we have been doing since the beginning of March. Six of these crates will be going to Trax, our training Partners in Ghana. We would like to thank all who donate tools. There has been a slight hold up in processing our kits. Our shelves are full at the moment waiting for tools to be refurbished and consequently we are not looking to collect tools until October, so please hold onto them. Pre- sorting also helps. We are not wanting any ironmongery or screws, nails, etc. as we have trouble storing everything. We will be having sales at the Pencoed Show 7-9th July and at the Lion’s Vintage Car show on August 5th at Porthcawl Rugby Club. This to raise cash for our projects and to re-roof our workshop. THE LONELY BOUQUET Friday May 5th was chosen as National Flower Arranging Day. Members of flower clubs were encouraged to create small posies of flowers called Lonely Bouquets to be given as gifts or deposited in prominent places. Members of Porthcawl Floral Arrangement Society participated in this enjoyable event by leaving free posies in Porthcawl town centre and promenade in the hope that they would be taken home and enjoyed by some lucky members of the public. If you were one of the lucky persons who found a lonely bouquet, why not, without any obligation, let a member of the club know. The club meets fortnightly at Awel-y-Mor with the main aims of learning about flower arranging, meeting friends and making new ones in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. The club, affiliated to NAFAS, each month has a visiting qualified demonstrator to show their skills and expertise at creating beautiful flower arrangements. New members are welcomed. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL Here we are again - doesn’t time fly. Our Inner Wheel friendship meetings have been entertaining and informative. The dinners were very nice as well. An International Conference in Aberystwyth was an uplifting event. The presentation was given by Jane Walker - the founder of the Purple Community Fund. Its aim is to educate and train disadvantaged people all over the world, to lift them out of abject poverty and help them to support themselves. We collect drinks can pulls and magazines, out of which they make beautiful purses, handbags and jewellry for sale. Pontllanfraith group held a fasion show, they modeled the clothes sold in the shop of Samantha B. Some of our members attended and returned with reports of a lovely event. The Interclub meeting at Machen was beautifully arranged, and the dinner was excellent. A talk about the charity that trains very special dogs to help the dissabled, was given and well received. We would like to congratulate the grandson of Jean Hughes, Callum Rhys Hughes (C.E.N.G.MICE) on obtaining his certification as a Civil enigineer with distinction and high commendation after many years of hard work. PRIME MINISTER FOR THE DAY “What would you do if you were Prime Minister for the Day” asked BBC Wales TV to viewers prior to the election. Porthcawl’s Shout Forum (PSF) responded with a tease that it had its own Parliamentary Candidate standing for the Teach Older People Computers party awaiting manifesto evaluation by Newsnight and the media. They appreciated both the humour and the substance and broadcast our plea to politicians not to continue allowing older people to be ignored and segregated in today’s internet based society. Wales Older Peoples Commissioner gave evidence to the Welsh Assembly’s Health and Social Care Committee concerning Health and Wellbeing, Quality of Life, Independence, Loneliness and older people’s Isolation. Conditions all aggravated immensely by people being unable to take part in the internet world we now live in. Around half of PSF members do not use a computer or social media because they have had no training and it applies to many older people, yet politicians resolutely ignore the situations leaving one wondering how they would feel living without a computer? Technology advancement will bedevil every generation in turn and if I were Prime Minister for a day I would initiate a nationwide training program to confine computer illiteracy to the history books. Living with your partner, what are your rights?

SURVIVING A BREAKUP Recent developments in the field of pre-nuptial agreements make it theoretically possible to enforce a fairly contracted pre-nup in the UK. As a result of this case, obtaining a pre-nup before you marry should be top of everyone’s wedding to-do list. In the UK, more than 40% of marriages end in divorce, so it is a sensible precaution to think about what will happen to your finances if your marriage fails. If you cannot agree on a mutual perspective on your finances at the start of your marriage, then it questions whether the relationship is going to work in the long term. You should insist that any matrimonial assets are placed in joint names rather than in one name only. Often couples are forced by one party’s poor credit rating to register the matrimonial home in the name of one party only. If this applies to you, you should insist that the home is transferred into your joint names as soon as practically possible. You should also not lose touch with your career completely as it is much harder to regain financial independence if you have given up work entirely. Maintenance Orders are not the lifelong meal ticket they once were and if you are in the position where you have given up work to care for the children for example, this may put you at a disadvantage in financial proceedings. However, you should take comfort in the fact that courts in the UK are still amongst the fairest in the world at recognising the contribution made to marital assets by a stay at home mum. If you find yourself in the position that your marriage is breaking down, you should try not to blame each other, to negotiate a settlement and move on as quickly as possible. Living together as a couple (also called cohabiting) does not give you the same rights and responsibilities as being married or in a registered civil partnership. Cohabitation does not automatically give you rights to the home you share. 1. If the property is rented, only the tenant(s) named in the rental agreement has the ‘right’ to live there, and has responsibility for paying the rent. 2. If the property is owned by one of you, only the property owner is entitled to live there, anyone else can be asked to leave. The owner can also make decisions about selling/ remortgaging the property. However, even where only one of you owns the property, the other may have some rights (eg: to a share of the money if the property is sold). This can happen if: 1. The owner has agreed in writing that the non-owner is entitled to a share of the home 2. The non-owner contributes financially (eg: paying part of the mortgage) or has acted to their own detriment (eg: giving up a job) on the understanding that this entitles him or her to a share To help protect the cohabitation rights of both partners, the parties should consider purchasing the property in joint names, but you cannot force your partner to sell the home if you decide to leave, even if you contributed most of the costs of buying the home, you would normally only be entitled to a half share unless you have agreed otherwise or if your partner walks out on you, you are likely to be liable for the full amount of any mortgage payments. Upon death, an unmarried cohabitant has no automatic right to inherit if their partner dies, although they may be a beneficiary under the other’s will. If you have lived together ‘as man and wife’ for at least two years or if you can show that you were financially dependent on your partner, you can make a claim for a financial settlement even if you were not a beneficiary of the will. If you owned your home together, the form of legal ownership has a major impact. To help you we would suggest: 1. Drawing up a cohabitation agreement, so you have clear arrangements covering ownership of the home and what rights each of you have to live there 2. Appointing each other to hold a lasting power of attorney (so that if one of you is no longer capable, the other can take decisions on his or her behalf) 3. Reviewing your wills and ensuring that you have each made appropriate provision for the other

SKER WI – ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Thursday 11th May marked the end of Sker WI’s Golden Anniversary year and we reflected on a year filled with fun and friendship, but also tinged with sadness due to the loss of two much loved members who will be greatly missed. Good wishes were also sent to Beryl Hughes, who has retired from Sker WI after many years. The election of the Committee was paramount as was the need to ensure that we had a motivated President. Sker WI is very fortunate that Nora Williams has agreed to continue as President for another year. Margaret Owen announced her retirement after 8 years as Treasurer. Fortunately Committee Member Muriel Stubbs has stepped into replace Margaret. Nora thanked Margaret for all her hard work over the years and welcomed Muriel into the post. Members thanked Nora and the Committee for their continued hard work. Judith Lucas, WIA, congratulated Sker WI on being a strong and successful WI. She wished the Committee and members all the very best for another successful year to come. We meet at 7pm, the second Thursday of the month, St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village. Tuesday the 13th of June and we was in our venue the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill at our new time of 2pm. We had a good turnout of member’s apologies from our treasure and secretary for their absence Minutes were read out and signed off. Correspondence read out. Summer is here (were used to the four seasons in one day) we are busy organizing our summer trip, which this year is to Cardiff and a tour on the open top bus getting off at the bay for some lunch, back on the bus to complete the tour. We all know Cardiff for shopping but finding out about the history will we hope is interesting and entertaining. We are keeping our fingers crossed for sunshine. Our speaker had to cancel but Maureen managed to arrange a Mr. Chris Jones a weather man who will give us an insight to behind the scenes His talk did not disappoint and he said he would put in a word for sunshine for our trip. NEWTON WI The June meeting was a very busy one, much to discuss from Glamorgan Federation and our forthcoming trips and events. The speaker and demonstrator for the evening was Alison Westwood. She was a very clever and talented Lady who after recovering from a serious illness was prompted to start a new business, ‘GIFT WRAPPING’ which she has done very successfully. She kindly passed on some of her expertise in showing us various ways of using paper and ribbons etc. resulting in beautiful parcels. All very interesting. On May 18th our members enjoyed a trip firstly to Mumbles for coffee then onto Norton House Hotel for lunch and a fabulous Fashion Show, elegant models displaying beautiful clothes which were provided by ‘Solo; and ‘Goose Island’ of Mumbles. Thanks to Federation House for organising such a lovely day. May 31st was our annual education trip, this year to Stratford on Avon. We were fortunate with the weather as the sun shone most of the day. A trip on the river Avon was a must as was visiting the various historic houses and of course some Retail Therapy. Well, six months gone already, there are still lots to do in the garden. Perennials will need tidying, they have had a battering with the winds, especially the lupins. Prune lupins to encourage more flowers. Remember to save and dry off seeds. Divide clumps of Bearded Iris now it will give them time to form roots before the cold weather returns. Deadhead Sweet peas regularly to keep them flowering. You can plant second crop potatoes now, to give you new potatoes for Christmas. Plant them in bags or pots, they can go in the greenhouse when tomatoes etc have finished. Harvest garlic when the tops start to bend over and yellow. At the last committee meeting, we were told that work will begin on the outside patio, the original was constructed out of materials from the renovations of Cliff Cottage which started around 47 years ago. Waste not, Want not, was the byword in those early days. It was originally two cottages, so to have access, a wall forty inches thick was breached for a doorway entrance. With barrow-loads of stone and rubble to move, the base of the crazy paving was secured. It now needs replacing. Gwen Bradford

July is a busy month when the familiar mantra of ‘dead-head, water, weed’ kicks in! But sit back and enjoy your garden, it will look beautiful this month ‘summer is when laziness finds respectability’ (Sam Keen). Lawns only need mowing once a week, during dry weather raise the blades of the mower and leave the box off as the clippings will act as a mulch, helping to retain water in the soil, lawns should be fed and weeds and moss treated but don’t put the first few mowing’s afterwards into the compost heap because you’re adding weed killer as well – not good! Grass is the cheapest plant to install and the most expensive to maintain! When deadheading your roses prune back to a bud in a leaf axil lower downs the stem, this encourages new growth, and you’ll then have lovely roses well into autumn, fab! Courgettes (love em!) did you know the largest one on record was grown in Devon, it was 69” long and weighed 65lbs, a courgette has more potassium than a banana (harder to eat in the car though!) When does a courgette turn into a marrow – the minute your back’s turned! Chris Early

Health RESVERATROL A new study shows resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant found in dark-coloured berries, the skin of red grapes, red wine and dark chocolate, may improve blood vessels in people with type 2 diabetes. Resveratrol activates the gene SIRT1, a protein that appears to delay ageing and the development of several diseases. Scientists dosed 57 patients with type 2 diabetes with either resveratrol or a placebo, resulting in improved aortal stiffness in the first group, but an increase in aortic stiffness in the placebo group at the end of the study. Resveratrol has neuroprotective effects that can lower your Alzheimer’s and dementia risks and may also protect against obesity, optimise cholesterol and decrease inflammation. Theses markers have two aspects in common - your mind is unstable when you engage with them and they are all painful! They are rooted in the doctrine of Kamma. Cessation promotes stability. Stability promotes luminosity. Luminosity promotes generosity, benevolence, kindness and love. You essentially have to ask yourself a number of questions. What aspects of your life involve these unwholesome habits? Who in your life supports such acts? Where does it happen? How often does it repeat? If you work out each question to each heading of cessation, you will have a plan to begin wearing away these patterns. It’s not all about struggle, with right action you will effectively plant yourself in circumstances that arrive at well being. Life slows down, simplicity and uncoupling reveals hidden joys. Arts KENFIG HILL MALE CHOIR

The Choir are pleased to announce that Chairman of the Choir for many years, Harold Phillips, and Ann McColl were married at St Theodore’s Church Kenfig Hill on May 27th 2017. The choir sang for them on the day and we wish them all happiness for their future together. Two weeks later the Choir also performed at the magnificent Selby Abbey and spent a memorable weekend with partners at Doncaster. We now look forward to our Annual Show in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl on July 8th. MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR Recently the choir has been working hard on new pieces of music to add to our repertoire. Some of these pieces were sung at the choir’s last concert in Penarth where we performed for MHA Live at Home a charity that provides care homes, housing and support to older people. This was the first time the choir had performed at this venue and it is hoped that this may become a regular feature in the choir’s calendar. We are now busy preparing for our Annual Concert, which is taking place at the Welfare Hall Pencoed on 7th July at 7pm with special guests Croesty Primary. As ever we are extremely grateful to the local businesses that have once again generously sponsored us enabling us to raise funds for our chosen charities – last year Croesty Primary and this year the Alzheimer’s Society. Later in the month the choir is having a social outing to Gloucester Quays before breaking up for a short summer break. UPDATE FROM AHNUH VALENTINE I’ve had some great gigs recently. I love travelling around Wales and visiting venues I haven’t been to before, and returning to some of my favourite places to sing. As I am writing this, I am warming up for tonight’s gig. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Jay Aston, who hails from Cornelly (my birthplace) and who fronts his band Gene Loves Jezebel, has released a new album – ‘Dance Under Water’, and a single, ‘Summertime’. The band was big in the USA in the 80s and still has a cult following, and a tour is due soon so I will keep you informed. It’s also good to see Mal Preest, also from Cornelly, still rocking. In the late 70s he played bass with Shakin’ Stevens and also appeared on my single, ‘Ain’t No Fun On The Dole’. He’s a member of the Fleetwood Mac tribute group and an actor on S4C soap Pobel Y Cwm, and I hope to have a beer with him soon! I was sad to hear of the death of John the Song – he was a star and we’ll miss him serenading us in the streets of Porthcawl. RIP John. Also, let’s wish a speedy recovery to drummer Terry T.N.T. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Early movie cameras were rather noisy devices, and during the silent era this didn’t matter, but when sound films came along, some means had to be found to deaden the loud noise of the camera mechanism. Firstly, the cameras themselves were placed inside large insulated kiosks, but this was very uncomfortable for the crew and greatly restricted movement. The answer was to soundproof the camera itself, and the sound blimp was devised. The Mitchell BNC was so effective that virtually no camera noise came through, and it was a mainstay of the film industry for decades. However, low budget ‘new wave’ films were usually shot on small portable unblimped cameras, making direct sound recording impossible once again; but in more recent times, sophisticated dubbing equipment meant that dialogue could be re-recorded in a favourable environment – the dubbing theatre – and synced up to match the picture perfectly. It will have happened far more often than you probably realise. Only foreign language films were obviously dubbed, because the actual words are different so it was impossible to make lip movements and dialogue match properly. But I can think of quite a few films of the 1960s, with well-known actors, which were predominantly dubbed, and are first-class productions. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony where we announced the winners from our 2016/17 season’s competitions. This year we were honoured to have present the family of a much-loved member Trevor Owen who sadly passed away in December 2015. His wife Christine very generously donated a beautiful trophy ‘The Trevor Owen Trophy’ in his memory which was presented by her sons Damon and Adrian Owen. There were 3 awards to be announced. The Photographer of the Year for Prints which was won by Richard Craze. The Photographer of the Year for Digital Images, won by Geoff Baker. The Overall Photographer of the year and first ever recipient of the ‘Trevor Owen Trophy’ which was won by Richard Craze. The photo shows our Chairman Glyn Edmunds receiving the trophy from Trevor’s sons on behalf of Richard Craze who sadly couldn’t be with us that evening. COR BRO OGWR Here you see a section of the choir, full of rehearsal energy and enthusiasm, preparing for their July concert. The programme will have a lighter feel to it, in keeping with the summer holiday mood. Well known opera choruses from Bizet, Mozart, Puccini, Purcell and Verdi, all sung in their original language. We are practising rolling our Italian “rrs”, our German “umlauts” and French nasal vowels. By the time this appears in print, we will have sung a medley at the All Saints’ Music and Flower Festival and held a fundraising recital featuring our accompanist Glenn Crooks and conductor Rosie Howarth. Glenn is an accomplished pianist and organist and we are always pleased when he has the opportunity to show his skills. Rosie has a beautiful voice with great dramatic presence and sings in the BBC National Chorus of Wales. Sport GREEN FLASH AT MERTHYR MAWR

The Porthcawl Runners were out in force at the recent Merthyr Mawr 5k – and brought home a first-placed prize, 14 new PBs as well as smashing a club record in the process. No fewer than 47 competitors from the South Road based club descended on the event – which forms part of the Bridgend County Running League – and eclipsed their previous best of 26 achieved at the same event in 2016. There was plenty of reason for celebration with Deb Goule collecting the prize of first Vet 45 female, while there were PBs on the night for Dave Dickson, David Bennett, Will Edwards, Robert Slaughter, Matthew Watkins, Laura Butcher, Karen Phillips, Deb Jones, Tim Kale, Jennifer Jones and Heidi Bennett – along with debut trio Martin Gush, Eve Devlin and Carl Field. Geraint Lewis led the Runners home in 23rd out of 479 finishers overall. The Porthcawl Runners are a friendly and welcoming club that caters for all running abilities. Presentation evening stepped up a gear this year. With the boys approaching Junior age it was up to the coaches to select individual trophies for Player of the Season and Most Improved Player. Those who know us will recognise this was a very difficult decision for me as I find it tough to single out individuals in such a successful team particularly as I have watched the boys grow from greedy little mini’s into such awesome team players! Nevertheless, Ollie Sadd and Bud Morgan Pellett thoroughly deserved the recognition, as did Ollie Tottman who was awarded Players Player by the boys. I would like to thank the boys, the Club and all our families for such dedication this year as well as Anthony for supporting me with the coaching and John our medic. I must also thank Kevin for holding quizzes at the Ancient Briton and donating the money to buy hoodies and polo tops for the boys. TAP IT OUT CC In May four club members embarked on a cycling holiday through Spain, the planned route taking them from Santander to Malaga a distance of roughly 780 miles with some considerable climbs which were to total just under 45000 ft. Chris Lewis, Gary Phillips, Gwylym Wilkins and Jason Bishop accompanying another fourteen keen cyclists (all with varying capabilities) and a support vehicle, set to take up the challenge of riding across the whole country (North to South) in ten days. The climbs out of Santander were noted by a few as brutal to say the least, which was apparently confirmed by some of the locals who couldn’t believe they were on bicycles. The route then took them onto to Soncillo, Burgos, Valladolid, Salamanca, Plasencia, Merida, Aracena, Seville, Ronda and finally Malaga. The time frame for the ride didn’t allow for much sightseeing, with some long days in the saddle and the temperature’s reaching 40 plus degrees on occasions which slowed things a little. We are told however that this a superb way to experience a country and that what was seen was spectacular, with walled roman towns and stunning architecture along the way. To celebrate the end of a fantastic season, Porthcawl U13’s travelled to Exeter to watch the Chiefs play Northampton Saints. The boys and dads enjoyed spending time together watching the game and getting competitive at the bowling alley! The highlight of the tour was our game against Topsham Under 13’s. Pen-y-bont Surf Life Saving club, based at Ogmore by Sea, patrol the beach on a voluntary basis throughout the weekends of May to September. As part of these patrols, it is an opportunity for junior members to learn. These patrols are carried out on a rota basis by members of the club from as young as 13 years old. With temperatures hitting 30 degrees last weekend, the patrol teams on the weekend of 17th- 18th June 2017, were certainly kept busy and found themselves carrying out a total of 23 rescues on Sunday alone. The majority of these were seen at the river mouth where people, including children, had to be pulled and/or assisted out of the river because they had got into trouble. The club would like to remind visitors that for their own safety they should only swim between the red and yellow flags, set out on the beach, and stay away from the river. The river mouth that feeds into Ogmore beach is always red flagged which means it is dangerous and you should never go in the water under any circumstances. The RNLI will patrol the beach on a full time basis from 1st July until 3rd September between 10am and 6pm. We now have a brand new website. www.plgc.org.uk is where you will now find us. Please check us out if you need any further information about the club, and also don’t forget our web cam, so you can see what’s happening down the beach from the comfort of your own home, wherever you are in the world. Also, a slight change in the Round the Bay Swim on July 30th. Due to a small tide it will now start at 12, rather than 11, which we advertised last month. This year, it is also compulsory for all competitors to wear a swim hat. This is to ensure that you have maximum visibility for our safety cover. We will be selling hats on the day for £2, and as with the swim entry fee, all proceeds will go towards the continuation of the club in the long term.
