DID YOU DO NATIONAL SERVICE? Dear Editor, Between 1945 and 1960 thousands of men in Britain aged 18 or over were called up for service in the armed forces, usually two years. Were you one of these? If so, would you like to share your memories with me? I am writing a book to be called ‘Reluctant Warriors: Memories of National Service 1945 to 1960’. This was a unique period in our history, the only time when men were conscripted in peacetime. Some enjoyed it, others hated it, few managed to avoid it. PAINT THE ‘BOTTLE BANK’ Dear Editor, It was a major planning disaster to demolish the splendid Esplanade Hotel and replace it with Esplanade House, otherwise known as the ‘Bottle Bank’, which is probably the ugliest building on any British promenade. Supporters said it would ‘blend in’ but it’s looking increasingly drab and it is a monstrous intrusion on an otherwise pleasant seafront. This building must be painted white or cream. It can be done quickly and cheaply and it would no longer look so grotesquely out of place. PORTHCAWL CYCLE PATH – NEWTON TO REST BAY Dear Editor, I refer to Keith Wright’s letter in the latest edition of Seaside News with which I concur wholeheartedly. Not only is it dangerous for cyclists, it presents danger for pedestrians and those who walk dogs of which there are many. I’m afraid to say that this new infrastructure has all the hallmarks of something which has been achieved at the lowest possible cost. I feel certain that Sustrans (the leading body in the UK who provide expertise in design and creation of cycling infrastructure to councils etc), would not have condoned such a design and I am opening communication with them to at least make them aware. It is also very sad that BCBC in their wisdom have chosen to completely miss a golden opportunity to attract tourism to the area by providing a truly appalling offering for cyclists. Letters LONDON MARATHON Dear Editor, April 23rd 2017 was a day I will never forget when I ran the London marathon. Only three years ago, I couldn’t run to the nearest lamppost, was overweight and decided I had to do something to improve my fitness and health. To achieve this, I joined Porthcawl Gym and with the help and support of the instructors my weight dropped and my fitness improved. In 2015, I ran my first half marathon and after this I began to think of running the London Marathon for a cause very close to my heart, The Stroke Association. Nearly 14 years ago, my father had a severe stroke at 58, which has had a long-term impact on my family. Since fundraising for the marathon (to date, I have raised £5,300) I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from the local community, many of whom have been similarly affected. To take part in such an iconic event was an experience I will look back on for the rest of my life, albeit a struggle at times. PORTHCAWL FOOTPATH AND HORSE DUNG Dear Editor, I must take issue with two of the letters published in your last issue. Firstly, I think the footpath/cycleway from Porthcawl to Rest Bay and beyond is one of the best uses of money that Bridgend Council (with the help of the EU) has carried out in recent years. Thousands of people are now able walk regularly to Rest Bay along a safe and attractive route. Living close to the walk at the Rest Bay end, I have seen the huge increase in the numbers of people using the path, which must be good for the public’s health, as well as increasing the numbers of visitors to Porthcawl. I use the path regularly, and have never had any problems with the few cyclists that use it - most are courteous and considerate. Secondly, on a point of information, Highway law states that anyone obstructing the Highway may be liable to prosecution, and this includes cattle which foul the Highway. However, horses were once the only means of transport along our roads, and for this reason, horse riders cannot be prosecuted for leaving horse dung on the road. It therefore remains the local authority’s responsibility to remove horse dung. I would also point out that horse dung makes an excellent manure for roses and vegetables, and many gardeners still collect horse droppings from the road. And horse dung is much less noxious than the dog faeces that so often foul our roads and pavements. Greg Nuttgens, Porthcawl

DUTCH ARMY IN DANYGRAIG

This month 77 years ago, the Dutch army was located in Danygraig. After the Netherlands had surrendered on May 15th 1940, the soldiers who stayed in the coastal Dutch province of Zealand fled, a few days later, via the Belgian coast to Western France. In June 1940, they arrived at either Plymouth or Newport, aboard the last two boats out of Brest. On the morning of June 11th the first group, now bedraggled, travelled by train from Newport to Porthcawl. They were welcomed by a Dutch Lieutenant - Colonel who had arranged an encampment for the troops at Danygraig, which consisted of a few large tents, with many, initially, sleeping under the stars. As the men marched to Danygraig from the train, accompanied by armed British soldiers, local residents pushed aside curtains and watched from their windows. They thought they were Germans, because of their black breeches, shoes and leggings. A second group came three days later; brought to Porthcawl by bus. Initially the Dutch soldiers were not allowed into town and Porthcawl shops were prohibited from selling them anything. SAMTAMPA AND EDWARD PRINCE OF WALES COMMEMORATION PORTHCAWL AND CARDIFF SENEDD MAY 2017

Patron and First Minister Carwyn Jones AM sponsored a Samtampa and Edward Prince of Wales remembrance event at the Senedd, as the finale to the Porthcawl Shout Forum exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the horrific disaster. There were 60 guests and 132 primary schoolchildren from Oystermouth, Whitestone Mumbles, Ysgol Gynraddd Gymraeg, Middlesbrough and Porthcawl. All enacted the story in various ways and Bridgend Performing Arts students gave an emotional piece of drama exploring the impact it had on the communities. Carwyn Jones and Rebecca Evans (Mumbles AM) gave speeches and John Jones, Nantymoel recalled his boyhood disaster memories. After the interval there were imaginative stories written and read by members of Porthcawl U3A. Borough Mayor, Reg Jenkins and Porthcawl Mayor Rob Lee gave a joint “Reflections” talk. Event organisers Jean Humphreys and Gary Victor closed by reading “peace”. The exhibition has now moved to the Swansea Waterfront Museum. Eleven of the twelve seamen who could not return home were from the Middlesbrough area and the Middlesbrough school children wanted to see their grave. At very short notice BCBC Mayor Reg Jenkins and his wife volunteered to meet and greet them at the Porthcawl cemetery with local photographer Malcolm Nugent. An experience they will never forget. Staff at Pil Primary School took time out from their Easter break to climb Pen Y Fan to raise money for the Welsh Air Ambulance who provide a volunteer service. The charity has become close to the school heart following their support during a medical emergency at the school. The school has raised just over £1,000 to date and continue to welcome donations for the good cause. Many thanks to everyone for their kind donations. Smoke Free Gates Public Health Wales have provided information to all schools on a campaign called ‘Smoke Free School Gates’. Pil Primary School is supporting the campaign and asks for all parents to refrain from smoking both on the schoolyard and near to the school gates. Recently, a group of 34 art and textiles students returned from an incredible trip to Venice where they enjoyed the riches of the Peggy Guggenheim museum and Damien Hirst’s new exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi. They visited the islands of Burano and Murano where they saw exquisite lace and glass being made and enjoyed St Mark’s Square, the Basilica and a gondola ride, returning to school full of enthusiasm! School events coming up in June include Music Transition on the 16th, the Technology and Art Awards Evening on 21st and our main Transition Day on 22nd when we welcome all our feeder primary schools and out-of-catchment pupils. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY GET READY TO TAKE THE STAGE AGAIN The weather getting warmer and the days getting longer mean one thing at Porthcawl Primary. It means that it is nearly time for our end of year production. Last year’s production of Cinderella Rockefella was a huge success so we are already working hard in rehearsals to try and put on an even bigger and better show. This year the show will be called ‘A blast from the past’ and will be closely linked to our school’s 50th birthday celebrations. Auditions are finished and we already learning some songs from 1967, the year we first opened our doors! The production takes place on Thursday 6th July and tickets will be available soon. We are also looking forward to the F1 in schools regional finals in the Swansea Waterfront Museum. This year we were lucky enough to hold our own race-day in the school hall. It was a great morning run by Chris Harris from Stem Cymru. The whole school came to see the cars in action with the fastest car travelling the length of our hall in less than a second! Hooray! Our Little Acorns have won the Attendance Cup! Mrs Grist and the staff are so happy, the attendance was a staggering 98.2%! Well done Mes Bach. We wish our entrants in the Urdd Eisteddfod all the very best of luck, they have worked so hard, attending so many practise sessions, we are so proud of you. The Oaks have two weeks of swimming lessons to look forward to, very popular lessons, and so important to learn basic swimming skills. A lot of them are also excited as the Llangrannog trip is booked, three days of fun open air activities. The Nursery had the most fantastic day, Big Box Day, they had so much fun playing with every child’s favourite toy, boxes! Atomic Alice brought her road show to school, she demonstrated experiments with air that teach science, a lot that can be performed at home. There are some new after school clubs rounders, rugby, music makers, space explorers club and tiddlers will be started soon. The P.F.A. are holding their annual Summer Fete on Thursday 13th July at 2pm, there are tables available and they are asking for raffle prizes if anyone is interested or can help. This Easter holiday I joined 29 staff and pupils on a visit to New York City. From the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State building, 9/11 Memorial to a Yankees baseball game, our visit was “a life changing and eye opening experience” (Nia Anderson, Year 10.) A year in the making, our adventure did not disappoint and we look forward now to our next big trip. On behalf of our pupils I’d like to thank our staff for a fantastic opportunity none of us will ever forget. Thank you to staff from Swansea University who shared their expertise with our Sixth Form Chemistry students. Using spectroscopy equipment worth £50,000 to identify unknown compounds, pupils learned the same techniques practised by forensic scientists. Pupils from years 7-9 have been looking beyond just reading books in our new ‘Reading for Life’ project. Teachers have collaborated with Harriet Hopkins, Branch Manager at Pyle Library, to think about reading in different contexts. This term animator Annie Wire and Jamie Bowen have been working with pupils to design and create their own animations. WEST PARK SUMMER FUN Our annual PTA May Fayre took place on a very sunny Saturday! The PTA superheroes outshone themselves with their super organising skills delighting our friends and families with stalls, demonstrations, competitions, crafts, an auction, raffle and even a dinosaur café! We would like to sincerely thank all those involved including sponsors, donators, kindly volunteers and everyone who contributed to the Fayre. It was especially lovely to spend the day surrounded by happy pupils and families all of whom will benefit from the proceeds of the Fayre. The funds will be invested in continued improvements to our outdoor space. Speaking of superheroes, our early years topic started with a bang when we discovered superheroes in our woodland! Pupils came to school dressed as their own heroes from Batwoman and Spiderman to doctors and firefighters. Year 3 and 4 are due to visit Bristol Zoo to learn about the animals and conservation work that happens in the rainforest which supports the juniors colourful theme. Thanks to the artistic skills of Jan of Bethesda Arts and some of our pupils, our mural depicting the folk tale of Kenfig has been completely refreshed and looks fantastic. Our Junior Big Sit challenge at the Principality Stadium was a real success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day. Money raised has been put towards outdoor play resources. It has been particularly exciting to take part in the Urdd Eisteddfod competitions this year with Bridgend hosting the National Urdd Eisteddfod. This summer we’re making Bridgend County Borough one of the greenest places to live in Wales by introducing a number of changes to how you recycle at home.

THE FUTURE OF BRITAIN’S ENERGY SUPPLY

RECYCLING AND RUBBISH CONFUSION REIGNS

With the UK exiting the EU, the Government has many different policy areas to assess and will need to consider the best way forward with each of them. The future of Britain’s energy supply is one such area. The well respected Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee have argued is at risk due to Brexit. They said that it would take over two years to negotiate a new deal for regulating nuclear power and trade. To mitigate any potential negative impact on the nuclear industry from any future Government’s Brexit strategy, the committee are urging for a delay on leaving the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). The Chair of the Committee at the time, Iain Wright, said that: “The impact of Brexit on the Euratom has not been thought through.” There are many views on the nuclear deterrent, but the level of scrutiny and regulation around nuclear power and the standardisation of this across the EU is something that has not received as much attention as other issues. This must be resolved quickly to maintain power supplies and to avoid the UK from becoming a ‘rule-taker’, by simply complying with European rules and standards on energy without any say over them.

The new refuse and recycling system has started. The boxes and bags have arrived. Facebook is awash with confusion. New BCBC councillors have inherited Labour’s crazy system. Some other councils give residents single bags for all recycling. So, it’s as easy for householders to recycle as it is to put items into rubbish sacks, removing the perverse incentive to dump rather than recycle. In Bridgend, though, it’s sorting items into five separate containers. There will be those too lazy to do it and we’ll see their handiwork in the back lanes or on the mountainsides. Swansea, with three bags of rubbish per fortnight, not two as in Bridgend, has had to double the amount of money it spends on clearing fly tipping so the evidence is there. Council wardens can issue fines of £75 if people get it wrong – for persistent offenders only, apparently. We will see – especially as their wages will be paid for by the fines! But if facebookers are confused, what about those individuals with dementia, mental health problems, communication difficulties or other undisclosed disabilities? Let’s have a clear statement from the council now that if these are the ‘persistent offenders’, that they won’t be victimised.

Our roving Marine Services Manager, Barrie Metcalfe, is currently viewing our new Harbourside Boat Crane at the Ascom factory in Modena, Italy, where it is in the final stages of being manufactured. The crane will form an important part of the future of Porthcawl Marina, as it will dramatically expand its current capacity. Photos of the crane will be in next month’s column. OUT AND ABOUT IN PORTHCAWL I am always happy to support the Rotary Club of Porthcawl’s annual ‘Know your Blood Pressure Day’ and this year’s event at Trinity Church was no exception. Each year the event serves to highlight the importance of regulating and tracking your blood pressure. I would like to thank Rotary Club members for their efforts in ensuring the event’s success and also the healthcare professionals who gave their time to take the blood pressure of the many people who took the opportunity to call into the event. It was good to receive an update recently on the proposed Porthcawl Maritime Centre from three of the Porthcawl Harbourside CIC team, namely Mike Clarke, Director, Stuart Bentley, Architectural & Design Consultant and Barrie Metcalf, Marine Operations Manager. Full planning permission has been granted for the development. The project has attracted EU funding, lottery funding and Welsh Government funding together with private and third sector funding. It is hoped that work on site will begin in the autumn of this year and that the Centre will take between 18 months to two years to build. FINDING SATURN Saturn is very much in the news at the moment because the highly successful Cassini probe is currently exploring the famous ring system before crashing into the planet on September 15th. Throughout June, Saturn is now at its brightest and visible all night in the faint constellation of Ophiuchus. The resplendent yellowishwhite “star” in Ophiuchus is in fact the ringed planet. To see the rings you will have to use a telescope but they are at their very best at the moment and nearing their maximum tilt toward Earth. Cassini will orbit between the innermost ring and Saturn’s atmosphere and send back detailed photos of the area. The probe has shown that the rings are made up from dust, ice and rocks, which are debris from comets, asteroids and Saturn’s 63 moons. The largest, Titan, is bigger than the planet Mercury and is easily seen with binoculars. But the 6th largest is Enceladus with a surface covering of water, which is very warm deep down. NASA plan to launch the Enceladus Life Finder mission in 2021. This will fly through Enceladus’s geyser-like plumes and search for biomolecules which could indicate biological activity. The club is celebrating 70 years since it was chartered in 1947 and will be holding a formal luncheon on 16th July at The Bear Hotel, Cowbridge to mark this milestone. As this will be a special year it was decided to inaugurate three long serving members to share the Presidential chain and each will officiate for a specific four months of the year, starting with Frances Rees followed by Lily Laesser and then rounded off by Eurwen Richards. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Pauline Lewis has led an interesting life. For many years she was a Christian missionary with her husband Joel, in Papua New Guinea and later in Ghana. Now retired and living in Porthcawl, Pauline is well known in the local primary schools where she takes assemblies and leads bible explorer classes, and in local churches where she often speaks in meetings. Pauline is a regular contributor of poems to the Seaside News, and a member of a local writing group, having published a number of books including her biography, children’s and adult Christian books, and also writing regular blogs online. An active member of ‘Grace Church, Porthcawl’, Pauline is a very talented but also a very humble and gentle servant of her Lord Jesus Christ. Her latest book ‘The Dark Stranger’ is now available. An historical novel, set in the biblical times of Rahab and Ruth. Copies are available from Pauline herself, local church bookstalls or the local library. It is well written and a good read. The Bridgend Foodbank, across eleven locations within the Bridgend borough, provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people. They are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, which was founded in 2000. In 2015/16 the Network provided 1.1m three days’ emergency food supplies. Of these 0.4m went to children. The Pen-Y-Bont Circle of The Catenian Association has been associated with the Bridgend Foodbank for several years providing various donations and helping at the foodbanks. Jonathon Davies, a Trustee of the Bridgend Foodbank attended the association’s April meeting. He highlighted that there are now 150 volunteers working across the Foodbank who distributed over 50,000 kilograms of food during 2016, mainly to single people. Chris Evans, the local Catenian President, from Porthcawl, said we are pleased to help towards providing emergency food for local people in crisis. He presented the Foodbank with a cheque for £1,000, which will be used to purchase certain items to ensure that the range of basic foods are continually available. The Association also recently gave a bursary to a young lady from Porthcawl who wanted to volunteer for a year in Calcutta helping street children. Martyn Bale

Our fund raising programme has started – with our Fashion Show, courtesy of Bon Marché. Six ladies, all members of the Talbot, walked the catwalk, modelling various garments available from the Bridgend branch of Bon Marché. In return, the store allowed all ladies present to purchase items during the following week with a 20% discount. Our next venture is the Theatre Club evening to see Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Coat. The coach is full and we are all looking forward to seeing the show in May. In sunny June, our day-trippers are off to Saundersfoot and Pendine; we will have lunch in Saundersfoot and a cuppa in Pendine. Then, on Saturday, 1st July we have a stall booked at the Pyle Community Council’s Fun Day on the rugby club’s field. We will be selling jigsaws and books. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS At our meeting in April we were privileged to welcome as speaker Simon Richardson MBE - son of our chairman Dee. He gave us a presentation of his career as a paralympian gold medallist and his plans for the future. His priority at the moment is a charity cycle ride from Paris to Swansea in aid of the Welsh Air Ambulance. Knowing the many problems he has overcome to be able to ride again we in the guild are sponsoring him for this. THE LONELY BOUQUET Friday May 5th was chosen as National Flower Arranging Day. Members of flower clubs were encouraged to create small posies of flowers called Lonely Bouquets to be given as gifts or deposited in prominent places. Members of Porthcawl Floral Arrangement Society participated in this enjoyable event by leaving free posies in Porthcawl town centre and promenade in the hope that they would be taken home and enjoyed by some lucky members of the public. If you were one of the lucky persons who found a lonely bouquet, why not, without any obligation, let a member of the club know. The club meets fortnightly at Awel-y-Mor with the main aims of learning about flower arranging, meeting friends and making new ones in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The Gospel of John ends with Peter noticing another disciple referred to as ‘beloved’ and asking ‘What job does he have to do?’ Jesus’ response is nothing if not direct. He says, ‘Pay attention to your task and mind your own business.’ It’s easy to get caught up minding other people’s business, especially if we feel their lot in life is better than our own. It’s easy to ask, aloud or to ourselves, “Why do I have to do this and she doesn’t? Why does he get it easy?” Well, for one thing, we really don’t know if he or she does get it easy. We don’t know what it’s like to be that other person. Their path in life may look easier or better than our own, but we don’t really know at all. More importantly, Jesus tells Peter his job is to mind his business, which is the business of following him as he has been called to do. It’s wise counsel. FEATURES PORTHCAWL U3A Ever innovative, we’re trialing a new offer this summer: a series of debates on a Friday evening held at the Y Centre in John Street. The programme began last month and is proving very popular. Each evening begins at 7pm with attendance open to all. For June we’ve three dates: on 9th we debate the (un) acceptability of torture; on 16th we argue the pros and cons of devolution; and on 30th grammar schools get the treatment. The format is simple: we’ve a guest proposer of a motion and another who opposes. These tend to be specialists in their field - for example, in May we welcomed the former President of the Oxford Union; we’ve had our local MP; and a family doctor from Portway Surgery. Each makes their case for ten minutes then the floor is open to anyone who wishes to contribute. It’s lively, instructive, and it’s fun! A packed house at All Saints church on Saturday 13 May were treated to a wonderful evening of music provided by The joint choirs of Porthcawl Male Voice and Whitland Male Voice supported by guest artists Rhian Thomas and Kath Lewis. Whitland started proceedings with a wonderful rendition of Anthem from Chess. This was followed by a number of Welsh numbers and culminating in Men of Harlech. Porthcawl Choir began with You make me feel so young with ever popular songs from Les Miserables. Between the performances of the two choirs the audience were treated to the lovely voice of Rhian Thomas accompanied on the harp by Kath Lewis.All present appreciated the contribution from the ladies. After the interval both choirs performed again, with Whitland singing World in Union and Porthcawl delighting the audience with O Gymru and a German drinking song entitled Aus de Traube in de Tonne.The evening’ s entertainment culminated with both choirs coming together to raise the roof with the ever popular Welsh hymn “Gwahoddiad” Porthcawl Male Choir are now looking forward to their tour to Torquay and another joint concert with Tamar Valley Male Choir. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS I am reporting that after three years as club correspondent Eileen Thomas is standing down. I feel privileged at being asked to carry on her work and she will be a hard act to follow. We are well into our spring season and have been invited to a few interclub meetings. Mary Emment- Lewis will be taking over the District leadership from Linda Brown on the 1st of July and we all wish her success during her year of office. Mary Morgan is bravely taking over our club presidency for a year. Trying to control our friendly chatty group at club meetings. We are looking forward to these meetings and the dinners that accompany them. At one of our meetings we wore silly sox to support our association president Zena’s charity BEAT the eating disorder. Meetings are always inspiring and showcase how talented our members are at fundraising. This is just the start of our summer get-togethers. Divorce - things to consider

SOCIAL MEDIA AND COURT PROCEEDINGS Social media is a major part of everyday life, and people think nothing of posting information about their personal affairs online. But, have you ever considered that if you are embroiled in a dispute with your ex- partner, social media evidence could affect the outcome of court proceedings? A simple search online via various social media platforms can reveal a fair amount of information about a person. It is important to review regularly who can see your social media account and what it shows, to ensure that you are not giving away too much personal information. If for example, a person pleads poverty, yet their Facebook account shows evidence of foreign holidays, or car purchases, it will not look good if that person is claiming not to be able to afford to make maintenance payments, for example. Social media profiles show a great deal about a person’s circumstances, including their living arrangements. A simple statement such as referring to “our home” could indicate cohabitation. A person could be checking in to their new partner’s location more often than not during the week, or may be openly making plans about cohabitation or engagement via social media. Such statements could be used as evidence in court proceedings. Any disparaging remarks about a spouse could lead to defamation claims. Individuals making threats or intimidating comments on social media could face police action or could be on the receiving end of an injunction application. Deleting comments may not undo the damage as the post may have already been shared or re-tweeted. People need to be careful even upon the conclusion of their case, and consider setting up a new email account or at least changing their passwords, especially if devices are linked via a cloud. If you decide to separate or divorce your spouse there are a number of issues you need to consider. If you are the main or only earner in a marriage, you may need to continue providing financial support to your spouse before reaching any final agreement. Conversely, if you are financially dependent on your spouse, ask for suitable arrangements to be made. If your spouse refuses, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order, requiring them to meet your financial needs until final agreement is reached. If you are concerned that your spouse will abuse them, you could close joint bank and credit card accounts. If your spouse is the sole owner of the family home, you can register your home rights to prevent the home being sold without your agreement. When considering the financial settlement, the first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children, more specifically, children under 16 and older children who are in full-time education or have a learning disability. In addition, the parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support. You can negotiate an agreement on child maintenance between yourselves or involve the Child Support Agency “CSA”. The other key factors to be taken into account (apart from the needs of any children) include: • Each spouse’s income and other financial resources. Actual income, rather than prospects. Any pension entitlements are also taken into account. • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The longer the marriage, the more likely it is that the less wealthy spouse will be entitled to a substantial share of the assets and/or continuing maintenance. • The contribution each spouse has made. Importantly, looking after the house and children can be as valuable a contribution as that of the partner who earned the income. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives and once you have reached agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order.

Our Annual Meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed members including WI adviser Sylvia Tittley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. A report, by our delegate, was given to members regarding the GFWI Council Meeting in Port Talbot, where truly inspiring speakers included Dame Rosemary Butler and Helen Sharman, the astronaut. Our Laleston link meeting was declared a success, having been attended by Aberkenfig, Pen-y-Fai and Ogmore Valley WI members. Excellent cakes provided by members, captivating entertainment by Debra John with ‘Welsh Folk Tales’. The WI Resolutions were discussed and voted for, in preparation for the Annual Meeting in Liverpool. Dawn informed members of her decision to stand down from the committee. A vote was held and Diane Marshall is now President, Margaret Williams the Treasurer and Maureen Morgan the Secretary. The Luncheon Club will be on 13th June and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 20th June. Our next meeting will be held on 1st June at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall, Laleston. Our AGM was held on 9th May at Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill. Judith Lucas was our WI Advisor. Members who attended Glamorgan Federation Annual Council Meeting in Port Talbot told members that it had been a great day out with three speakers who kept us entertained with their accounts of their lives and work. Members were asked about our summer trip in August and told about a coffee morning we are holding to raise funds for our charity. The Glamorgan Federation show in Cornelly was discussed and arrangements for our members who are attending the archery and shooting tasting day finalised. Our AGM was drawn to a close. Next month our speaker is Sian Roberts her topic Loving Welsh Food, here’s hoping for samples. Tea and biscuits plus a glass of wine and nibbles it’s our AGM after all, fetched the meeting to a close. Pop in next month we’ll be glad to meet you. Christine Callaghan

We have had an interesting couple of months, enjoying a wonderful display of ‘Carrie Bags’ in March. In April, Joyce James gave an amusing and informative talk on the ‘origin of sayings’. For example, ‘On the Fiddle’ – an historical nautical expression – the fiddle amongst other things being the raised border of the sailors’ plate to stop food falling off in bad weather. If the sailor, being a bit greedy, filled his plate to overflowing, he was said to be ‘on the fiddle’! Our First Aid class is in the process of being organised and quite a few of our members are interested in doing the course. Our Annual Meeting is a week later than usual, being held on 1st June. Also in June, we have an educational trip to Lacock National Trust Village and retail therapy in nearby Chippenham – Tea and cakes a must! As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. The May Meeting started with a minute’s silence for a dear member: Julie Anderson who sadly passed away recently. Julie had been a faithful member for many years and will be missed very much by us all, especially the Craft Group. The meeting then resumed, it was the AGM and Resolutions Night. We were pleased to have in attendance our WI Advisor, Mrs Sylvia Tittley, who was most helpful and informative. This years resolutions are: (1) Alleviating Loneliness. (2) Plastic Soup (keep microplastic fibres out of our Oceans). All annual reports were given and the evening ended with tea and biscuits. On May 3rd, four members attended the Annual Council Meeting in Port Talbot - it proved to be an excellent day. The guest speakers were: (1) Jane Dixon, who is the head of Denman, she encouraged us all to sample the delights that Denman has to offer. (2) Dame Rosemary Butler, who was the Presiding Officer at the National Assembly in Cardiff. She spoke of her life and why it is important for women to involve themselves in politics. (3) Helen Sharman, who gave a wonderful talk on her life experiences as an astronaut and being the first woman to live on the International Space Station. Finance DISCOUNTED GIFT TRUSTS If you have excess capital that you are unlikely to need but from which you require a regular income, a Discounted Gift Trust may be an ideal way of reducing your Inheritance Tax liability. What is a Discounted Gift Trust? It is a life insurance investment bond, held in trust for beneficiaries of your choice. It involves making a gift of a lump sum, which is invested in a bond that is written in trust. You reserve the right to receive regular capital withdrawals (the “income”) from the bond at a level to suite your needs. Who is it suitable for? A discounted gift trust is particularly suitable for people aged sixty or over, who are reasonably likely to survive for the next seven years. How much inheritance tax can be saved? That depends on how long you live after setting up the bond, as well as how much you invest and the size and frequency of your capital withdrawals. There are two main elements to the Inheritance Tax (IHT) saving: (1) Part of the lump sum potentially becomes immediately exempt from IHT when you make the gift. The size of this “discount” will vary from person to person, and will depend on your age, sex and health, as well as the size of your capital withdrawals. (2) The remainder of your investment will be reduced by IHT taper relief and become fully exempt from IHT when seven years have elapsed from the date of the gift. During the month of June we have the longest hours of daylight, the longest day being June 21st then it’s all downhill again. So try and make the most of the extra time. Plant out annual bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed. If you haven’t done so, plant up hanging baskets and planters. If they are ready, move them outside to their position. The greenhouse needs attention, time to open vents and doors on warm days, if the soil is dry, water the plants daily. They will need to be hardened off to acclimatise them to outdoor conditions. A friend was telling me how she got her grandsons interested in growing plants in the garden. When questions were asked, she told them to look it up on their smart phones. They soon wanted to put into practice what they had discovered, they now are helpers! Children are increasingly isolated from the outdoors. Gardens allow them to reconnect; to get muddy, fall over and discover the difference between a stinging nettle and a dock leaf. Thus the bridge of friendship is formed in these most basic of human interactions. The Buddha wasn’t an aimless talker, his spiritual skill was to anticipate and know the correct time to speak and remain silent. When he did speak, he knew that others were ready to receive. Such a skill requires patience and wisdom. A wonderful example of this process is the attention a mother gives to her breast fed child, or the care and attention that a carer gives to an elderly family member. KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE DAY AT PORTHCAWL Despite the approaching local and national elections, some of our wellknown politicians didn’t appear to be feeling any particular pressure as they supported Know Your Blood Pressure Day recently. This annual event, organised nationally by the Stroke Association, and supported by Rotary Clubs, gives people all over the country an opportunity to get their blood pressure checked. First Minister, Carwyn Jones and Madeleine Moon MP joined Porthcawl Mayor Robert Lee and his wife Ann in the queue to have their blood pressure checked at the event organised by the Rotary Club of Porthcawl and held in Trinity Church, Porthcawl. Honorary Rotarian, Madeleine Moon even spent an hour or so with other Rotarians encouraging the public to take the opportunity to get the free blood pressure check. During the day, health professionals took the blood pressure of 163 people at Porthcawl. Of those people, eighteen were advised to have a follow-up check within a month, and one was advised to make an urgent referral. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to over 50% of all strokes. These strokes could be prevented if high blood pressure was controlled and this campaign helps people to understand the link between high blood pressure and stroke. Rtn. Laurence Chilcott

Arts COR BRO OGWR’S SPRING CONCERT

The sun came out for Cor Bro Ogwr’s Spring concert at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. Conductor Rosie Howarth had put together a varied programme of music which was enjoyed by audience and choristers alike. The first half featured Mendelssohn, Handel and a romantically musical contemporary setting of ‘Love Divine’ by Howard Goodall which the choir sang with real feeling. Soloist Sarah Jane Griffiths, well known locally, performed two songs from Faure and Schubert. To round off the first half the choir performed ‘Zadok The Priest’ with huge gusto and enthusiasm. The second half featured John Rutter’s ‘Requiem’, written in 1985 in memory of the composer’s father. It’s a smallscale work, underlining a theme of light and consolation and accompanied by restrained instrumentation; five young students from The Royal College of Music and Drama joined harpist Angharad Edwards to form the CBO Rutter Ensemble especially for the evening. BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR During June Bridgend Male Choir will be appearing at two historical venues - Harrow School, North West London and the Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay. Harrow School is certainly a unique venue in North West London and the School’s Speech Hall, will be the venue for an evening concert on the 17th June. The Hall, which was built in 1871 and replicates the Globe Theatre, will provide a dramatic backdrop to a unique evening of exciting Welsh musical entertainment with Bridgend Male Choir and Lewis-Merthyr Band under the baton of renowned Welsh conductor Owain Arwel Hughes CBE. The concert is in support of St Mary’s Anglican Church, Harrow on the Hill. The historical Coal Exchange building in Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff has been restored and converted into a luxury hotel, the Exchange Hotel. It was here at the Coal Exchange that the first ever £1,000,000 cheque was signed in 1904 and where the Choir will entertain 200 guests at the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) Presidential Dinner on the 22nd June. A PERSONAL UPDATE FROM AHNUH VALENTINE Wow! The past few months have been crazy, in all aspects! On the 23rd of April, I took on the London Marathon with my father, Steve Richmond to raise £5000 for mental health charity, MQ. It was an amazing experience and it gives me huge pleasure to be able to say we smashed our target and have raised over £5000 for the amazing charity. On the 5th of April, I was chosen to perform in The Mirus Star Awards event in the Principality Stadium. A great charity and a hugely inspiring event. I also had the pleasure of meeting Simon Richardson MBE, Paralympic twice gold and silver medallist; and his talk was so moving, what an amazing person. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK When I was producing and presenting my radio show some years ago, promoting the South Wales original music scene, we used to invite guests to come in and play an acoustic set. Two of my favourite performers were Phil James from Bridgend and Rob Ash from Aberkenfig. Phil had released a great album called ‘This Way Up’, and is still writing good songs, while Rob is perhaps best known as a member of 70s band James Hogg. They released three singles and had a record deal with a top company. Now the two have teamed up in a duo called Phil and Ash and are playing local venues so check them out – they are top drawer! One for your diary is the Newton Beer and Pop Festival on 26th August on the green. The bill this year includes Tom King, South Road, The Greasy Rats, The 1990s, Shy Warrior and lots more. I will keep you up to speed with the event, as I’m sure Steve Maitland Thomas will. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW This month I am going to consider a different aspect of film making, brought to my attention by a couple of conversations in the past few weeks: that of sound, and why is it that all too often these days the audience is having to strain to hear the words spoken by actors? Is it only older people who are struggling to make out and understand the dialogue? Certainly ideas change in the world of film and television, and the days of classicallytrained stage actors booming out their lines on a film set have probably long gone. Richard Burton was advised by Elizabeth Taylor to adopt a more intimate style of delivery when the camera was shooting in close-up, compared with how he might have performed at the Old Vic. That, of course, makes perfect sense. But are contemporary film and programme makers striving for too much realism at the expense of clarity? Personally, I like my films to be both heard and seen clearly, with well-pronounced words and properly-lit images. But this is an art form, and there must always be room for creative interpretation. ART IN FOCUS This month the focus is on the notorious Francis Bacon (1909-1992), a debauched Irish born scoundrel, who poked fun at the artificiality of the state of the art world. In the 50s and 60s this meant Modernism with its abstract art, which was supposed to transport the spectator to another realm of reality. He chose the raw sensuality of life itself, of flesh, pain, and the sheer angst of living in a modern world. His paintings are raw in their intensity: Bacon himself said, “You can’t get more horrific than life itself”. The fact that his paintings can disgust is what makes them so interesting. Whether you love him or hate him you cannot help be drawn into his world through his art. A violent world of obsessiveness and cruelty, of loss and pain, Bacon was certainly a colourful character. Forced to leave Dublin at seventeen due to his father finding him dressed in his mother’s dress and underwear, Bacon moved to London. Here he declared that he wouldn’t copy any other artists’ techniques, but would find one of his own and he certainly did that! They reached the semi finals of Wales Got Talent and are fitting in a visit to the Fayre in July along with the Rock Choir and the Performance House. Add to this the usual fun of the Fayre with a magician, bouncy castle, children’s games, footie fun and tug of war between the two pubs and you have a recipe for a great afternoon’s entertainment for all the family. Last year the event raised over £7,000 for the church. The Festival Week opens on Saturday 24th with a concert featuring ‘Sounds Familiar’ in Pisgah Chapel and a ‘Festival Songs of Praise’ in St James’ Church, Pyle on Sunday 25th, there will a ‘Swinging Sixties Night’ on Thursday 29th in St Theodore’s Church. Also concerts on Wednesday 28th with the Guides in Kenfig Hill RFC and on Friday 30th Bethel Community Church have a concert in the Talbot Centre. The final weekend stages the Fun-day and Classic Car Show on Saturday 1st July and a “Community Thanksgiving Service” in St Theodore’s Church, on Sunday 2nd July. There are also many events each day during the week. It is 50 years since the ‘Summer of Love’, so the theme of this year’s Fun-day is ‘Flower Power’, so join in the fun and come dressed accordingly. The Rhondda Symphony Orchestra return to All Saint’s Church, Porthcawl at 7pm for an evening celebrating some of the greatest music from the across the Americas. Porthcawl is now a regular RSO venue thanks to its consistently enthusiastic audience. As the orchestra prepares for its 50th anniversary next year, this concert mixes the familiar with some lesser-known pieces from both American continents. Bernstein’s 1956 Candide Overture bursts with Broadway energy and rhythm. In contrast, Barber’s compassionate Adagio for Strings, written 20 years earlier, rarely leaves a dry eye and has featured famously in films including Platoon, The Elephant Man and Amelie. There are two pieces by Aaron Copland: the stirring and uplifting Fanfare for a Common Man, and the suite from the Billy the Kid ballet which combines the sound of the open prairie with rodeo-style cowboy tunes and American folk songs. Finally, the orchestra is delighted to introduce talented percussionist and Young Musician of the Valleys, Heledd Gwynant. Heledd will be following in the footsteps of Evelyn Glennie in performing Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra – an exciting piece packed with Brazilian melodies and rhythms. TAP IT OUT CC The weather in April was great and lots of riders have been putting in some big millage. The first club 100 of the year took place and a great turnout enjoyed the delights of the Vale of Glamorgan and Neath valley, it was nice to see new faces and 100 mile virgins all chatting and helping each other out along the way. Club rider of the month had to be split between 4 in April. The award went to Gwilym Wilkins, Jason Bishop, Chris Lewis and Andrew ‘podge’ Richards. All 4 rode from Porthcawl to Caernarfon which is 185 miles. This was rode in under 12hrs at an average speed of 18mph, a long day in the chair for anyone. Saturday rides start at 9am and Wednesday night at 7pm, there’s also a Monday ride at 6pm now the summer as arrived. All from the Tap in Pyle. All very welcome. The season has finally come to a conclusion, as the weather improves...typical! Another great season for the boys, the foundations were laid over the last two seasons and this year the boys showed huge development in their ability and attitude, the core skills that they have learnt have given the boys the tools they need as they enter into contact rugby next year. Throughout the year we have been coaching them the fundamentals of contact and the techniques of taking contact and the tackle. The boys have adapted fantastically and are ‘chomping at the bit’ to play contact at U9’s. Recently, we arranged a night with Nigel Owens and Kingsley Jones to raise funds for our age group. The night was a huge success and we thank all that attended. Local businesses across Porthcawl supported the cause by donating raffle prizes thanks to: Porthcawl Butchers, Isabellas, Skin, USTU, WRU, Porthcawl Health & Fitness and Cosy Corner Lounge. A special thanks goes out to the Hi Tide for being great hosts. FANTASTIC RESULT FOR PORTHCAWL & CYNFFIG KARATE

Porthcawl & Cynffig Karate become the most successful club in Wales at the KUGB British Championships. The annual event was held in the NIA in Birmingham with many clubs travelling from all over the UK. The competition was divided into two main disciplines - Kata (set forms) and Kumite (fighting) ,both of which are very dynamic and exciting events to watch. Every single competitor from Porthcawl was outstanding, showing huge determination and courage. The medalists were Penny Sinclair with a silver in the girls Kumite. Ellie Morris with a bronze in her very first visit to the event and Rachel Edwards with a bronze in the Ladies Kata. The club train under the guidance of Sensei Christian Whale (6th Dan) every Monday and Friday in Cynffig Comprehensive School. joanna Aitchison

April was a Tale of Two Cities for our more experienced athletes, with Laura Butcher, Daniela Jones and Will Edwards tackling the Manchester Marathon; while Julian Maine, Romana Maine, Gabriella Maine, Nicola Thomas and Tony Phillips took on the London Marathon. All members did themselves and the club proud and had some fun along the way. The year long points battle at Porthcawl Parkrun came to an end and for the first time we has not one, but two champions with Debs Goule and Will Edwards taking the titles, and we also had Dave Bennett finishing second in the men’s competition. The Couch to 5k has been a huge success with the first group achieving their goal under Coach Lindsey Kale, and inspiring our second group now working towards their’s under Coach Gareth Roper. There was plenty to celebrate at the Clubs recent AGM. Having served us well, Chairman Barry James announced he would stand down after 7 years in the role. Thanks Barry and good luck to Gareth Mole as new Chairman. Come along and join us on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30pm from the Rugby Club. Will Edwards

BRIDGEND FATHER & DAUGHTER COMPLETE LONDON MARATHON Local Bridgend business owner, Steve Richmond of Steve Richmond Carpets and his daughter, student and singer, Lexi Richmond took a trip to London on April 23rd to take on the London Marathon in a bid to raise money for MQ, a newly formed mental health charity. The local father and daughter stuck with each other around the course of the 26.2 miles and completed the marathon within 6 hours and 20 minutes, meeting some famous faces such as Paula Radcliffe and Ian Beale! Lexi and Steve’s target was to raise £5000, which they have since hit ... however they are aiming to now raise as much money as possible for the amazing cause in a hope of transforming mental health. Right now, one in four people in the UK is living with a mental health condition. That’s nearly 15 million people with an illness that affects their wellbeing, their relationships with family and friends, and their ability to work. MQ are the first major charity funding much-needed scientific research to transform the lives of everyone affected by mental illness, they aim to uncover breakthrough findings and illuminate people’s understanding of mental health. TAI CHI NEWS PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB As mentioned last issue, the annual Around the Bay Swim is fast approaching. Why not give it a go this year. It’s taking place on Sunday 30th July at 11am, and consists of a long or short course option. The short course takes you from the beach in front of the lifeguard building, into the bay, over to the slipway. This works out at approximately 750 metres, but depends upon what line you swim! The long course goes around the harbour pole, and returns back to the beach, making it around 1500 metres. It’s a good challenge, but there is always huge safety cover, so you won’t be left out on your own! There is a minimum age of 14. Registration is on the day only, with the gates opening at 9.45am, and registration from 10am-10.45am. Entry fee is £15 for short course and £20 for the long course. Whether you are a first timer, experienced tri-athlete, or an old sea dog, it’ll give you a great sense of achievement when you finish, and all profits from the event are ploughed back into the club, so you’ll also be helping a charity too! From the 29th of April to the 1st of May, the local Swimming Dragon School of Tai Chi hosted a course at the Griffin Park Community Centre Porthcawl, with tuition given by the foremost master of Sun Style Tai Chi in Europe, Mr Per Nyfelt of Stockholm, Sweden. He stayed with his wife Louise at the Fairways Hotel during his visit. As well as the Swimming Dragon School members, other Sun Style enthusiasts came to attend including members of the local Fair Lady Sleeping Tiger School, the Pembrokeshire Camrose Tai Chi, and the Sleeping Lion School of the Midlands. Also other individuals and groups came from England such as the Forrest of Dean group. The importance of the course to Sun Style enthusiasts, was shown by two ladies, Isabel and Zaya, who came all the way from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to attend.
