Letters WALKIES IN MEMORY OF PORTHCAWL MAN

Dear Editor, A GUIDE dog puppy is to be named Ricky in honour of a wellknown Porthcawl businessman. Phil Rixon, a former town mayor, had expressed a keen interest in raising money for Guide Dogs Cymru before his death in 2014. His family and friends took part in a sponsored walk along Porthcawl seafront alongside volunteers and golden retriever Bowie, who is about to start training as a guide dog. The event, on top of a donation from the family, raised nearly £3,000 for Guide Dogs. Organiser Norah Clarke said: “Phil was always doing something to help the community, and had spoken about putting on an event at the Grand Pavilion for Guide Dogs. He loved animals and thought the world of his own dog. “We can’t thank his wife Cheryl enough for giving Ricky such a wonderful start in life. Phil will never be forgotten, and we hope Ricky will go on to bring independence and freedom to a blind or partially sighted person.” Naming a guide dog puppy starts at £2,500. TRIP TO PORTHCAWL SPOILED Dear Editor, Having spent a few days break in Porthcawl recently, I had to get in touch to explain why an otherwise lovely break was completely spoiled by dog owners! Dog excrement was everywhere, on the grass, the promenade and all over the place at the wildfowl natural history park. If the dog owners of Porthcawl still want visitors-which I think is important to the local economy-then I suggest that they clear up after their dogs! Nigel Gross Barnstaple, Devon

PORTHCAWL CYCLE PATH Dear Editor, After being away for a few months and looking forward to use the new cycle path from Sandy Bay to Rest Bay, I must say how disappointed I was when I got to try it out, it seems that a lot of money has been wasted on nothing more then cycles painted on the floor and road. Cars are parked on the path, there is no line to show pedestrians that cycles are about, so you have to dodge people or be stuck behind people that obviously don’t realize its a cycle track as there are no signs telling them and they look at you as if you are doing wrong cycling on the pavement when it is supposed to be a cycle path. When you get to the Town promenade all signs disappear completely so no one know if you go on the road or pavement, all you see is red cycles chained up what they are for i don’t know. I know this has cost a lot of money and must be the biggest waste of money I have ever seen as this is not a cycle path as cycle paths have defined lines or coloured paths to identify to cyclists and pedestrians where to cycle, my main concern before long there will be an accident as this is just dangerous as the cycle path is not defined. Council please re look at this and make it clear by white lines it is a cycle path. Keith Wright Nottage, Porthcawl

HORSE MESS IN ANGLESEY WAY Dear Editor, I recently wrote to the Seaside News describing the amount of dog and horse mess we are having to deal with on our streets and pathways. So I find it very disappointing that I feel the need to write again on this matter. On 23rd March I returned home to find that the local horse riders who continue to exercise their horse down Anglesey Way had again left horse mess outside my property. This is no way an attack on people who wish to exercise their horses around the streets of Porthcawl. However, I do have an issue when their mess is left outside my property. In fact as you can see from the photos it is across 3 driveways. So my neighbours and self now have a choice to make, either WE have to clean up someone else’s horse mess or drive through it and ultimately carry it onto or properties. Again there will be plenty of people who say it is a natural product, to those I say feel free to come and remove as it will save us the hassle of doing so. So thanks very much to the inconsiderate horse riders who use Anglesey Way as somewhere for their horse’s to deposit their waste. Gavin Ansen Anglesey Way, Porthcawl

Letters SAMTAMPA MEMORIES Dear Editor, The letter from Mr Ian Stroud about the Samtampa tragedy, revived some memories for me. My eldest brother Charles who served in the Merchant Navy throughout the war, took me from our home in Pontypridd to see it and we boarded the stern. The gale which blew the Samptampa onto the rocks was so fierce that oil spray was found on windows in Bridgend and solidified black oil still clung to pebbles until quite recent years. Charles was on two ships that were sunk and a third severely damaged. The first was sunk by gunfire from a U boat in the South Atlantic, he was landed in Montevideo in Uruguay and mingled with the crew of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee sheltering there during the battle of the River Plate. The second ship was in the ill-fated PQ17 Arctic convoy, bombed enroute to Murmansk in Russia and he endured 10 days in an open boat before rescue arrived. The third was a coastal vessel dive bombed in the Irish Sea and towed into Rosslare Harbour. It is surprising that very few remember the 10,000 ton American ship ‘Tillamook’ stranded on Kenfig sands between December 1946 and March 1947. PORTHCAWL’S SAMTAMPA GRAVE

Exactly two years after the Samtampa and Edward Prince of Wales disaster at Sker Point, the new mass memorial grave in Porthcawl cemetery was unveiled on Saturday 23rd 1949 and resulted in this letter to the editor of the Porthcawl Guardian newspaper. “I would like the good people of Porthcawl and district to know how much their tributes and great kindness is appreciated by those who have lost their loved ones in the great tragedy.” So wrote Mrs K Davidson from Whitby, Yorks who had not only lost her 24 year old son Lonsdale Francis Davidson, an Able Seaman on the Liberty ship, S.S Samtampa but he was one of the twelve crew that could not be identified and taken home. With fewer people able to remember the disaster, Porthcawl Shout Forum are working to increase awareness especial with schools and college students and are indebted to our Patron Garwyn Jones AM who is sponsoring our exhibition in the Senedd until 8th May, it will then move to the Waterfront Museum, Swansea for six weeks. FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS The 15 May topic is ‘The Life and Times of Paul Robson’ the speaker is Mr How-ard Mortimer. The 19 June is a research night at Ty Ardd for members. MUSEUM RE-OPENS Porthcawl museum reopened its doors after further planned refurbishment works, which included controlled asbestos removal and much needed improvements to the lighting and heating systems. The opening was formally carried out by the mayor of porthcawl Cllr Rob Lee and his wife the mayoress Ann Lee after cutting the ribbon the mayor presented Ceri Joseph (museum secretary) with a Porthcawl town council plaque in recognition of her services to the town. Also in attendance was the Mayor and mayoress of Bridgend County Cllr Reg Jenkins as well as other invited guests including members of Porthcawl town council. The opening coincided with the launch of the museums new SS Samtampa exhibition the loss of which along with the mumbles lifeboat in 1947 reached its 70th anniversary. The exhibition includes many before unseen artefacts from both vessels. Members of both Porthcawl lifeboat crew and Coast Guards team also attended the opening and displayed Porthcawl’s D class Lifeboat outside the museum. The maritime exhibition will be open until June before being replaced by a new display charting the part that RAF Stormy Down played during the last war Other improvements to the museum include the Victorian school room and new easier access to the cells of the old police station all of which now have new exhibits housed within them, for more details of the years planned events visit PORTHCAWL MUSEUM.

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM When you visit the Museum you may be bemused to see a model of HMS Victory being displayed. What is the link with Porthcawl? HMS Victory was commissioned in 1758, the keel laid in 1759 and was launched in 1765. The hull of the ship was covered in copper plates. Horatio Nelson believed that these copper plates, manufactured at the Swansea Copper Works, made the ship more maneuverable and faster in battle. In pursuit of this advantage, Nelson, himself visited the works at Swansea to confirm their design. On his journey, it is believed that he stayed a night at the Pyle Inn; which sadly no longer exists. This event at least gave us one reason, although tenuous, to display Ken Watts’s incredible model of the ship. Then, during our research into Porthcawl Dock, an amazing fact was discovered. Following the initial development of the dock in 1829, the first harbour master was appointed in 1833. Captain Lewis Roper Fitzmaurice was born in Ireland in 1789,joined the Royal Navy in 1799 as ‘Boy 2nd Class,’ and, according to a family story, served as a cabin boy at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE NEWS

Recently, a group of 23 Welsh students spent an action-packed weekend at Glan-llyn, an outdoor education centre near Bala. Pupils from Years 9-12 enjoyed canoeing, raft building, archery, orienteering and high ropes (some whilst carrying a cup of water!). They had competitions to paddle the raft, climb the high wall blind-folded and to build the best campfire, which they then toasted their marshmallows around. They played football, hockey, netball and went bowling returning to school on Monday full of stories! Last July, our Welsh Baccalaureate students were involved with a highly successful project at Cosy Corner. They tidied up the path and wall areas, weeded and planted the borders and painted the benches for local residents and visitors to enjoy over the summer. This year, we are looking for new community projects to participate in during July, and welcome any suggestions from the public for worthwhile projects to get involved with. PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL As part of our Easter activities Tesco visited our nursery. The Tesco ladies helped the children to make Rice Krispie Nests filled with Mini Eggs. Everyone watched the chocolate melt from solid to liquid. We mixed in the Rice Krispies, put them in a paper case to make a nest and then counted out the eggs. Later everyone decorated a fairy cake with icing and added an Easter Chick. During the session the children were made aware of the importance of washing hands before preparing food. The children were delighted to be able to take home their creations. Thank You Tesco! Warburtons visited our Reception class to talk about healthy food choices and the importance of food hygiene and preparation. The children wore aprons and hair nets, which they thoroughly enjoyed! The children had the opportunity to taste different types of bread, such as milk bread, whole meal and fruit bread. The children were able to make a healthy sandwich by selecting different types of fillings to put into their sandwich. We all had a wonderful morning! WEST PARK PRIMARY NEWS We had a very busy term Spring term at West Park, with so much exciting learning and fun. Reception and Nursery went to Cardiff dinosaur museum. On their return they found dinosaurs in our Woodland. Year 1 and 2 were busy learning about what carnivores and herbivores eat by sorting out food. Herbivores eat plants. Herbivores are a brachiosaurus, diplodocus and triceratops. Carnivores eat meat. Dino man came in to school and was kind enough to have his photos taken with us! Reception and Nursery had a Dino Disco on the last day of term. They dressed up as Palaeontologists and there was an eggsplosion in our Woodland! We had lots of fun on Red Nose Day. Each pupil wrote a joke or funny story and we made a class joke book. Then we had an assembly and got a chance to show off how funny we are! Nigel Little from Size of Wales visited to raise the profile of deforestation in the rainforests across the world. KS2 held workshops with Nigel looking at habitats, palm oil plantations, how we can help sustain rainforests, climate change, and endangered animals. We came to school dressed in green and raised £150. Thanks to West Park, the rainforests will be 1200 trees better off. Well done everyone! Year 5 Journalists

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY TOPS TABLE AGAIN We have had another successful month at Porthcawl Primary in which our pupils have pushed themselves and achieved great things! During March we took part in the Big Pedal. This is a national competition in which pupils need to cycle and scoot into school. This year the whole school community rose to the challenge and between us we completed a massive 1,270 journeys to school on our scooters and bikes! We are still waiting for the results to be confirmed but the provisional results put us in 1st for the Wales and 9th for the U.K. Well done everyone, this is another incredible achievement for our school! We have some exciting activities coming up in the next month. Our Foundation Phase have a trip to Plantasia to study their topic of the rain forest. We will also be getting a visit from ‘The Size of Wales’ who will be talking about how we can help save the rain forest. Key Stage 2 will be going on a trip to Caerleon to visit the ancient Roman ruins. SCHOOLS INTERACT CLUB OF PENCOED

The Interact Club of Pencoed Comprehensive School, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bridgend, presented a cheque for £250.00 to their Welsh language school teachers. The funds which have been raised by the members of the Interact Club are to be used to assist the funding of the Urdd National Eisteddfod to be held at the Bridgend College, Pencoed Campus, between 29th May and 3rd June 2017. The Interact club brings together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self. Interact gives students the chance to make a real difference while having fun. They organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL - IAN THOMAS MEMORIAL 7’S On 29th March, we held our 39th annual Ian Thomas Memorial 7’s at Cae Gof Playing Fields. 14 teams took part and all present witnessed some glorious rugby throughout the day. A huge thank you, to all the schools that competed. Congratulations to Brynmenyn Primary, who beat Pil Primary in the final of the Cup. Nottage Primary, beat Swansea side, Sketty Primary in the Plate final. Both Cefn Cribwr sides acquitted themselves well and can be very proud of their achievements. Cefn Cribwr School would also like to thank Ospreys Development officer, Alyn Lake for refereeing, and our wonderful PTA for serving refreshments. The support and sponsorship from Cefn Cribwr RFC was integral to the success of the day! We are looking forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of the tournament in the next academic year. The School Council continued to meet and interview our elected representatives. The most recent visitor was Ogmore MP Chris Elmore who came in early April and discussed his role and answered searching questions from our School Council. They told him of the work they are doing with the Community Council and the Observation Unit fundraising.

PENCOED COMPREHENSIVE EASTER CONCERT

Mrs. Jenkins (Head of Music) presented an exciting and varied concert, but couldn’t have done it without the fantastic support of the peripatetic music team (Mrs. Becci Goss, Mr. David Jefferies, Mr. Huw Griffiths and Mr. Rob Edwards) The orchestra performed superbly well with a warm tone and excellent intonation. Pupils have been rehearsing for many weeks. Pieces included Jupiter, Summertime and Jurassic Park. Individual and group performances (from singers, dancers and instrumentalists) were polished and professionally presented. The pupils took great pride in showing off their musical skills to the receptive audience. The guitar and drum ensembles proved to be a great hit with the audience, showing off yet another aspect of the music department. Mrs. Kay Smith (Head of Drama) worked closely with our feeder primary schools in the school’s transition programme. Llanharan, Croesty, Pencoed and Coychurch presented engaging and attractive performances, ranging from harp and trumpet solos to choir and dance items. The final item was a medley of songs from Les Miserables, performed by the school choir. An excellent end to the evening’s entertainment. Congratulations to everyone who took part. SCHOOLS BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

Pupils of Bryntirion Comprehensive School have said they will never forget the lessons learned during a visit to the First World War Battlefields of France and Belgium. Under the guidance of battlefield experts, the group of 50 Year 9 pupils gained an unmistakable impression of the realities of trench warfare as they explored underground dugouts, traversed immense mine craters and became hands on with authentic uniforms, gas masks and weapons that had once been used to horrifying effect. Such experiences were accompanied by the constant presence of seemingly endless rows of white headstones, at which the pupils heard personal stories of how soldiers as young as 15 were killed. Having recently researched and constructed a memorial in the School to honour fallen members of the community, the group made this commemorative journey to the sites where the Welsh soldiery gave their lives. Delivering services in both English and Welsh, the pupils laid wreaths at Mametz Wood, the Welsh Memorial Park, the Menin Gate and the grave of Hedd Wyn. Poignantly, those who had relatives killed in the First World War were also able to lay poppies at their gravesides. Andrew Shell

Boys and girls from Nursery right up to Sixth Form at St. Clare’s, Porthcawl donated more than 250 Easter eggs, books and toys for sick children at Ty Hafan Hospice, an appeal organised by Interact Club members, part of Rotary. Headmaster, Simon Antwis said, “We are really proud of our Interact Club pupils. They develop very useful life skills in being active members of the local community.” This is a crucial time of year for our Year 11 pupils. As well as completing their studies before beginning their GCSE revision, they’ve also been selecting their A Level options for September. St. Clare’s is very proud of its 100% pass rate at A-Level. Last summer 100% of students went to their first choice university, including Oxford. Our small classes allow students the individual attention they need to reach their full potential. SPRING NEWS FROM CYNFFIG It’s been another jam-packed term for pupils at Cynffig. Pupils attended the WISE event at the Senedd in Cardiff. It included leaders from business, academia and Welsh Government and aimed to encourage girls to enter the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Our girls were fortunate to meet HRH the Princess Royal and Trudy Norris-Grey, chair of WISE and MD worldwide business development at Microsoft. Congratulations to Year 12 pupils Thomas Cullen, Alyx Forester, Kieran Jenkins and Katlyn Simons who have gone through to the national finals of the UK Young Engineer of the Year competition. The team has been working closely with the Sony UK Tec engineering team to develop a smart sensor for monitoring the health of the machines on their Raspberry Pi manufacturing line. They are now looking ahead to refine and improve their project solution to make it commercially viable and suited to Sony’s needs. We wish them well! AFON Y FELIN NEWS We are so proud of our children here at Afon y Felin, all of them! In the qualifying rounds of the National Eisteddfod Ellis Pride came a close second on piano, and Eve Matthews is was placed first with her poetry recital. Cerys Pritchard, Rhianna Knowles, Demi-Leigh Gifford, Adam Clatworthy, Ben Smalldon, Ellis Pride, Sofia Chayka, Eystyn Seymour and Kurtis Dobbin came first in the Cerdd Dant, singing one song whilst another is played on the harp. They will all be competing at Pencoed in the whitsun holiday. Our group of creative dancers came third at the Sony Theatre in Bridgend College, and they were fantastic! The RNLI visited us recently, and taught beach safety, important knowledge! We raised over £200 for Red Nose Day, which means Mr. Hughes has to dye his beard and hair red! We are riding our bikes and scooters to school as part of the Big Pedal, instead of arriving by car, and congratulations to Demi-Leigh for winning the Golden Lock! Our PFA’s cake sale raised £180, thank you to everybody that supported it. After a consultation period, Bridgend County Borough Council’s bid to permanently enlarge the capacity of our school was approved by Cabinet. This is yet another achievement for our school! CORNELI PRIMARY NEWS Our Easter celebrations began with a superb bonnet and egg parade which was followed by fun activities and goodies to eat organised by the Parent Council. Miss Morgan got everyone on a hunt to find eggs and to answer the maths questions they contained, real egg prizes were awarded. The choir sang for the pensioners and in an assembly Year 6 children told the Easter Story. Big Pedal Fortnight, promoting active travel, saw so many cycling and scooting to school that we came third in Wales and 34th in the whole of the UK! The highlight of our activities was a Bling Your Bike Day when we dressed as Superheroes and raised £78 for Sustrans. We also dressed in blue to raise £118 for Water Aid and red for Comic Relief Day. The whole school danced the Cha Cha Slide in the playground raising over £200 on that day too and selling chicks made £450 for Velindre. Our thanks go to all for their generosity. Thanks too goes to everyone who supported us in achieving the renewal of our Investors in Families Award and we look forward to continuing working in partnership with our families to ensure the very best for our children. DOUGLAS THE BLACK AND ‘NORMAL’ I’ll never be ‘normal’, WHITE COCKER SPANIEL I’m trusting you, my friend, to hold my paw, as I exit this life through the last open door. You have made the decision to let me go, I know how it’s hurt you but It must be so. If I could speak I’d tell you, my life is at an end, I know you will cry but in time you will mend. My ears no longer hear, my eyes no longer see, my sense of smell is as faint as can be. My heart is still proud but my body is frail, the dog that i was has started to fail. Do you think for a moment I’d want to go on? When my health, my body all but have gone. I know you have loved me, I’ve been loved to my core, I know you won’t know it but I’ve loved you even more. When this is over I know you’ll be sad, but the life that you gave me was the best I could have had. Please feel no guilt nor any remorse, as my life takes its final turn of the course. The only trouble reading a good book on my night flights, I can’t put it down, but not for in-flight meals, obviously if I put in down it will land on someone’s head! There’s nothing better than a good classic book reading to our owlets in the vestry by lamp light and knowing the book will enhance their minds before they visit their bed. Not ‘normal’ like you, No more running or jumping, ‘Normal’ things others do. I try to blend in, Go shopping alone, I never complain, I certainly don’t moan. So, I work through my list, “Oh great, the top shelf”, There goes my ‘normal’, I can’t reach it myself. So here is my predicament, Do I forget it and pass? Do I sit here and wait, Until there’s someone to ask? So much for blending, I feel such a fool, A few years ago, I thought myself cool. LOCAL SURGERY TO CLOSE

Odourless, invisible, with no discernible taste, yet deadly. Known as the silent killer, carbon monoxide gas kills 50 people a year in the UK and leaves another 4,000 in hospital. The gas can be produced by any fuel-burning appliance such as a boiler or a cooker, or from an open fire which is faulty or does not have adequate ventilation. It causes a range of symptoms; headaches, nausea, dizziness and breathlessness, some of which in the early stages are very similar to flu. Tragically can be fatal. It is entirely preventable as it can be detected by an alarm, much like a smoke alarm. A recent survey of their customers by the big six energy companies discovered that almost half of the UK population, a staggering 27 million people, do not have a carbon monoxide alarm in their home. The Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed! Campaign seeks to tackle this with a simple ABC message; do you have an Alarm fitted? Have you tested it and are the Batteries working? News that the surgery operated by Dr Tim Eales in Porthcawl is to close in June is causing worry to its 3,000 patients. Even more concern has been raised because patients are unable to register with the Portway Surgery. The ABMU health board says it is still considering options. I have challenged them about what action they intend to take to ensure all residents have access to GP services. It is GP’s who carry out 90 per cent of patient contacts but only get 7.8 per cent of the health budget. This needs to change and Welsh Conservatives want the Welsh Labour Government to increase spending to 11 per cent – in line with expert evidence. But forward planning is also essential. We have known for years that a high proportion of GP’s in Wales are aged 50 plus and will retire over the next decade. Recruiting young doctors to take their place is vital. A scheme to give financial incentives for them to stay on in Wales after their training has seen some success but we need more investment, more training and more support for GP’s to prevent situations like the one in Porthcawl from arising again.

NEWS FROM SHOUT Sarah Rochira, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, paid her annual visit to Porthcawl Shout Forum on 7th March 2017.She updated members on her 5 priorities for the past year. She has: a) recently published GP Service in Wales following an investigation into primary health care b) continued to monitor the quality of life of residents in care homes c) secured the W.A.G. First Minister’s agreement to the need for a Bill of Rights for Older People based on U.N. principles d) published a report on dementia ‘Dementia- more than memory loss’; W.A.G. will produce a strategy on dementia in June/July 2017 e) collaborated with the Children’s Commissioner to bring older and younger people together. The Commissioners explored common concerns like loneliness and isolation, which is now regarded as a public health issue by W.A.G. Work is ongoing with Trading Standards to combat scams. An ‘Ageing Well in Wales’ programme has been introduced to ensure that Wales is a good place in which to age. Shout members lamented the paucity of NHS dental services in Porthcawl and the threat of closure of public toilets. Margaret Edwards (PSF Shout)

A TALE OF TWO VISITS It was great to meet a group of school pupils from Litchard Primary School, Bridgend recently at the National Assembly for Wales. They were visiting the Assembly to learn more about the Assembly and to visit the Senedd building. They had the opportunity to sit in the old chamber in Ty Hywel. When I met them, the school children gave a rousing performance of happy birthday, which was lovely. It was good to speak to them about my role as an Assembly Member and as First Minister and then to ask them for their questions. They asked a number of questions about my school days, my religious beliefs, my hobbies in my spare time, Wales’ football and rugby teams, my career before entering politics and how I use technology in my job. I thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Last month, I was delighted to visit Porthcawl Museum to see for myself the changes to the Museum, to have a look at the new exhibitions including the new Victorian schoolroom and the new Maritime Exhibition and to leave a comment in the visitors book. FEATURES KPC YOUTH MEET ROTARY CLUB OF BRIDGEND

The Rotary Club of Bridgend welcomed Paula Lunnon to a recent Breakfast meeting. Paula is the Chair of KPC Youth in Pyle and thanked the Rotary Club for its continued support. Paula explained that KPC was established as a Charity in 1998 by Helena Parobij following the tragic drugs related death of her son Brett. Helena did not want this to happen to any other young people so she set up the Charity to give young people a safe and fun place to attend away from the dangers of anti social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse. As well as the open access facilities for over 250 young people, KPC provides support and training in IT for older people, an After School Club for 5-7 year olds and daytime sessions for the wider community covering over a dozen different training courses. It also offers training and support for local unemployed people. Despite a very active fund raising programme and successful grant applications , KPC has a shortfall in its budget for the coming year and the help provided by Rotary and many other organisations is both very welcome and very necessary. Rotary President, Dr Bob Broughton, thanked Paula for her excellent talk and for the valuable work which KPC does in the Community.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey folks, recently I have been thinking, again, of what the Gospel is all about. The word Gospel simply means good news. And it’s in the Bible we read about the good news of Jesus and his message. Paul, says particularly in Romans 1 v 16, that he was not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God at work in everyone who believes. The Bible says that the Gospel really starts with the idea that Jesus has risen from the dead, and so he is able to give us victory over the power of sin and death. Also, the Holy Spirit is able to heal and transform us in the area of our emotions and character. Deeply ingrained emotional wounds, addictions and personality traits that we want to change, he is able to change. That’s great news! He also shares his joy and peace with us so we experience a joy and peace that only comes from heaven. He can also take away our loneliness when we invite him into our lives. To top it all we can also look forward to a total renewal of the universe and world we now know. Along with glorified bodies that never get sick or die. Paradise again! SOROPTIMISTS SUPPORT FOR Y BONT On 22nd March Bridgend Soroptimists held an Afternoon Tea celebration at Coedy-Mwstwr Hotel when President Sue presented a cheque for £1,400.00 to Mags Griffiths, General Manager of Y Bont, the children’s charity based in Bridgend providing a day nursery for pre-school children who have disabilities and complex medical needs. Members raised the funds throughout the year with raffles, Tombola events, and a Fashion Show. On behalf of Y Bont, Ms Griffiths expressed her delight in accepting the cheque which represents a much needed helping hand in the continuing operation of Nursery which depends heavily on public support. Bridgend Soroptimists have pledged their ongoing support in the coming year with a further donation of funds and also some members giving their time and talents to help with fundraising events staged periodically at Y Bont. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Our AGM this year was slightly different from usual. In the absence of the Chairman, myself, following a fall, and the Secretary, Jean Dorrington, with a hospital appointment, our vice-chairman Dee Richardson had to wear different hats to read the Chairman’s Remarks and the Secretary’s Report! Thanks Dee! It caused some amusement! Dee is now the chairman and Freda Rodger the vice-chairman. Janet Anderson remains as treasurer and Jean as secretary. Our President Ann Barrett handed her badge of office to the new President Joyce Webb. Members then enjoyed two quizzes followed by tea and biscuits. Many members attended the Federation AGM in Cardiff when we were delighted that Dee Richardson was made Federation President. A luncheon at Isabella’s and a lunchtime drama at the Pavilion were enjoyed. This months meeting is on May 10th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when the ever popular speaker Debra John will give us some more ‘Welsh Tales’. Do come and hear her. You will not be disappointed. It’s time to renew membership, hasn’t the past year gone quickly! We are able to maintain the £5 membership subscription for yet another year; this amount equates to less than ten pence a week, so not too bad eh? Our fund raising programme has started – with our Fashion Show, courtesy of Bon Marché. Six ladies, all members of the Talbot, walked the catwalk, modelling various garments available from the Bridgend branch of Bon Marché. In return, the store allowed all ladies present to purchase items during the following week with a 20% discount. Our next venture is the Theatre Club evening to see Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Coat. The coach is full and we are all looking forward to seeing the show in May. In sunny June, our day trippers are off to Saundersfoot and Pendine; we will have lunch in Saundersfoot and a cuppa in Pendine. Then, on Saturday, 1st July we have a stall booked at the Pyle Community Council’s Fun Day on the rugby club’s field. We will be selling jigsaws and books. Our monthly meeting was held at the Grove Golf Club on Tuesday 4th April. As usual, we had an enjoyable dinner before the meeting began. Unfortunately several members were absent due to illness. A successful fundraising cheese and wine evening was held at Mary Emment-Lewis’ home on Friday 17th March. Members who attended the Spa Day at the Heronston Hotel on Monday 27th March had a great day out including lunch. With Easter approaching Easter Eggs were purchased for the residents of the home in Pant Morfa and the home in Victoria Avenue. Monica, our Overseas Secretary, reported that a large number of Easter Eggs had been sent to Romania. Secretary Carol had received invitations for members to attend Inner Wheel Inter Clubs in the District. On 1st July, following our afternoon tea at the Grove on Wednesday 28th June, there will be several Committee changes. Mary Morgan will become President for 2017-2018. Carol Lowery will be Senior Vice-President. Sheila Burge will be Club Secretary. Gill Edwards takes over from Monica Balkwill as Overseas Representative. Diane Richardson will remain Treasurer. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa We thank everyone for their financial support; Porthcawl Rotary Club, two organisations from Trinity Church, Churches Area Network, and Mair Greer for her sponsored swim. We were able to get our shipment on the way to Malawi in March and are currently preparing nine crates for Ghana. We have had very good feed back from Sierra Leone following the Ebola Crisis. TFSR concentrated on setting up tailoring workshops. Jennifer Mosiri writes ”I lost my father and could not complete school. My partner died from Ebola and he had supported me and my whole family. I sacrificed a lot to train and look after my child. To train is one thing, but now I can live, provide food and care for my children”. Two of the staff from HQ interviewed 100 people who had completed training and got established in tailoring, building, carpentry, welding and fabrication, wheelchair and bicycle maintenance. We would like to thank all who donate tools. Our shelves are full at the moment, however we are short of, arc welders, sash clamps, hub pullers, blow lamps, We have an excellent team in the workshop. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Have you ever known a cook who didn’t measure any ingredients? They might say, “Use just a smidgen of this.” “How much is a smidgen anyway?” You might ask, and they’d say, “Oh, about this much,” grabbing “a smidgen” between thumb and forefinger. The cooking lesson is nearly complete when the meal is served and the delicate balance of ingredients is experienced, and understood. It will take several tries for the chef in training to get it right, connecting ingredients, technique, timing, the miracle of “the mix” and presentation. Jesus teaches us that mixing prayer, fellowship, peace, caring, and forgiveness with just a “smidgen” of hopeful expectation, persistence, and love brings the Realm of God into our lives. With it, God transforms our weaknesses, failures and disappointments into life’s greatest masterpieces. Charity Golf and ‘An evening with Niall Ferguson’ … are what Porthcawl Lions Club present for the next month. The annual charity golf day will be held at the Grove Golf Club Porthcawl on 2nd June. Now in its ninth year, teams of four players will play 18 holes with coffee on arrival, and a buffet meal to follow. This year’s nominated charities are Porthcawl Stroke Club and Prostate Cymru. PORTHCAWL U3A U3A stands for the University of the Third Age – the ‘third’ being a reference to that time of life when you give up full time employment and choose to do things that you may have always fancied trying but hitherto had no time or opportunity to indulge. The focus is on the provision of community-based educational, creative and leisure opportunities delivered in a friendly, no pressure environment. There are around 1,000 local U3As all over the UK - and the number is increasing, with about 50 new U3As starting up every year, each being a self-governing charity. OBSERVING ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES The summer months offer a good opportunity to look for some of the many artificial satellites that orbit the Earth. Many are communication satellites but you can see military satellites too. The best time to look for them is after sunset when the Sun is below the horizon and can reflect from the satellite’s solar arrays. They are brightest when they pop up over the eastern horizon but as they travel across the sky they will get dimmer and suddenly disappear from view due to the Earth’s shadow. Low Earth orbit satellites pass over at the same apparent speed as an aeroplane and can appear as a surprisingly bright starlike object. If you can see red lights then you are looking at a plane and if it streaks across the sky in a second or so it’s most probably a meteor or shooting star. If you notice a bright flash it will be one of the Iridium satellites that provide satellite phone coverage over the entire planet. The flares can be predicted to the second and the website Heavens Above will tell you where and when to look and how bright it will be. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

A’PEAL FOR HANDBELL RINGERS! Time on your hands? Looking for a new hobby? Like music and having a laugh? Personal story: two years ago, looking for a hobby, I was invited to a handbell practice. I couldn’t read music, couldn’t tell a crotchet from a hole in the ground – but was handed a lovely shiny bell, told when to ring it. An hour later I was hooked! I laughed so much that night I knew I’d found my new interest in life. I now have some of the nicest friends I’ve ever met, gained unforeseen skills (reading and appreciating music) and filled a gap in my life that I never knew existed. The Old Newtonians team (so named because we practice in the Newton Institute, Porthcawl) is anything but straitlaced. We cover everything from the Beatles to Beethoven. PRE AND POST NUPTIAL SETTLEMENTS Recently, a Supreme Court Judge has indicated that couples should be able to enter into pre-nuptial agreements without fear that the court will overturn them upon divorce. He went on to say that couples should be able to elect to enter into a “marriage-lite” where their pre-nup, not the divorce court decides how their assets will be divided if they part. This may be sobering news to the golfer Colin Montgomerie, who is in the process of suing his estranged wife, claiming that the terms of their post-nuptial agreement are unfair. Seven years ago, the Supreme Court upheld a prenuptial agreement entered into by a couple in landmark case of Radmacher v Granatino. However, during those proceedings, one of the judges expressed the view that pre-nups should not have legal effect because they undermine marriage. However, despite this, increasingly the courts are adopting a different view, indicating that agreements reached between the Parties in this way should be upheld. In practice, more people are turning to pre-nuptial agreements and even post- nuptial agreements to avoid lengthy and costly court proceedings if the marriage breaks down. Whereas a prenup is entered into before marriage, a post-nuptial agreement is entered into after marriage, while a couple are still living together. It allows them to plan financially in case their marriage breaks down, spelling out how their assets will be divided. If one party issues proceedings in order to try and overturn the terms of the initial agreement, the court in such instances will usually uphold the agreement if it was entered into with both parties having had the benefit of suitable independent legal advice. An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member. And, unfortunately, inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. As a beneficiary, you do not normally need to claim your inheritance or pay any inheritance tax – the executors should deal with this. You may, however, need to be patient. Administering an estate can be time-consuming and it often takes several months before a beneficiary receives an inheritance. Family inheritance becomes problematic if there is no will or if you feel the will was unfair. If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (eg misinterpreting the will) or deliberately. Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, timeconsuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice.

Held their monthly meeting in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill, at our new time of 2.00pm till 4.30pm. Its April already this year is rushing by, helped by all the dates for our diaries, which Federation House has organised for us as well as walks, craft classes and scrabble days organised by our own W.I. Enid our Secretary read out W.I. business and asked members how they has enjoyed our Link meeting held in the Pavilion Porthcawl. Hosted by Sker W.I. All agreed the evening had been a great success our turn next year. Our talk this month was by Mr, Mike Wilcox his topic was Fashion namely C & A where he worked most of his working life. He told us many facts and figures about this iconic firm which still trades worldwide. Tales of shoplifters and how they were caught had us enthralled. The afternoon passed quickly helped by plenty of tea and biscuits. No talk next month our A.G.M. but in June Sian Roberts will speak on ‘Loving Welsh Food’ were all hoping for samples. The April meeting was a full house, Jennifer our President welcomed all members new and visitors. After singing Jerusalem we again raised our voices to sing ‘happy birthday’ to Beryl Cullen our lovely pianist. The business part of the meeting completed, the main event began: ‘A Fashion Show by Klass’. Six members acted as models, displaying the beautiful outfits to their full advantage. The Narrator for the show was Dianne Reybould who did a superb job. Thanks to the ladies from ‘Klass’ and Jennifer for organising. The Social Link Meeting in March at the Pavilion was very successful, many thanks go to the Ladies of Sker WI, for all their hard work. Our Walking Group enjoyed a very refreshing walk along the Board Path at Rest Bay. The weather was lovely with a slight breeze which helped us along. LALESTON WI Our April meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and agreed. Travel arrangements for the GFWI Council meeting at The Princess Royal Theatre, Port Talbot on 3rd May were confirmed. All members are looking forward to the GFWI Garden Party at Margam Park on 21st June. There will be further information regarding our ‘Fashion Show’ and ‘Chavanage House’ trip, at next month’s meeting. Our guest speaker Malcolm Cowper gave a very entertaining talk on ‘The History of WW2 Bridgend People’, with interesting contributions from the members. Christine Rees gave the vote of thanks. The raffle was won by Jane Lewis and the ‘Bridgend WW2 photo’ competition by Ann Rees. The Luncheon Club will be on 9th May and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 16th May. Our next meeting will be held on 4th May at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). This will be our Annual Meeting discussing the WI Resolutions. We will also be having a ‘Bring and Buy’. Finance NEW TAX YEAR NEW RULES As we begin another tax year, so we are faced with another change in legislation. Many of you are aware as to the increases in the ISA allowances meaning that you can now contribute £20,000 a year each to an ISA each. However, where there is a big change surrounds pensions, particularly to those high earners or those with larger pension funds. Back in 2012 the Lifetime Allowance charge for pensions stood at £1.8 million. This has now reduced substantially to £1 million from the 6th of April 2017. This could have a major impact upon individuals who have pension fund(s) where the combined totals exceed the £1 million mark. The tax rate payable if the excess of the £1m is paid as a lump sum – called a Lifetime allowance excess lump sum and is charged at 55%. Some individuals may also face, as a result of the tapering of the annual pension allowances last year, a tax charge which they would not be aware of. Individuals may have made contributions of £40,000 per annum in line with the standard annual allowance for pension contributions, unaware that their actual allowance may have been tapered in line with their earnings. This could result in a tax charge of as much as £13,500. Pensions, generally, is a complicated topic and one that does require advice. Should you be faced with any pension related question and wish to receive advice, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

OLDER BORROWERS CAN GET BETTER DEALS There are many thousands of older borrowers in the UK who have mortgage or equity release deals that they should review, due to the drop in interest rates. Typical deals taken out between 3 and 7 years ago can have an interest rate that ranges from anything around 6.5% up to as much as 8.5%. You can always find something to do in the garden and it need not be onerous. With the longer daylight hours it can be enjoyable and beneficial. One of the priorities is the lawn; feed your lawn with a high nitrogen fertiliser to encourage healthy green growth. Sowing lawn seed and repairing bare patches can still be carried out in the early part of the month. Mower blades should be lowered this month to their regular summer cut height. During May you can still plant asparagus and seed potatoes. New autumn maturing rhubarb named “Livingstone” (Thomson–Morgan) is interesting to rhubarb fans like me, worth looking at. Certain committee members are busy nurturing plants ready for the annual plant sale to be held on Saturday May 6th the plants are in various greenhouses, so a lot of trotting back and forth and all done with good humour. There will also be a Coffee Morning, a homemade cake stall and other attractions, so make a note in your diary. All funds raised go towards the constant maintenance and refurbishment of Cliff Cottage, originally built as three cottages in the 1800’s. Gwen Bradford

Too much Easter chocolate? Never mind, May is such a busy gardening month you’ll soon work it off! It’s time to plant out the baby veg and flower plants nurtured so lovingly under glass. Beware! Night frosts are not uncommon this month especially after bright clear days, so keep old newspapers handy to cover your babies if they are vulnerable. I love the fact that runner beans should be planted the same time as Chelsea Flower show, two big events! Now the grass is growing well, mow the lawn every week, lowering the blades slightly each time, not too much or your lawn will be scalped and turn yellow, definitely not what you planned! One of my favourite pastimes is grass cutting (I love watching my husband huffing and puffing as he mows the lawn!) Water and feed plants, it’s a good idea to put your plant food directly into your water butt, so you can do the two jobs together! Sow some lovely Sweet Williams, and get your hoe out, it’s definitely a feed, seed and weed month! Did you know: the UK has over half the population of the world’s bluebells – aren’t we lucky! Arts NEW PROGRAMME OF EVENTS ANNOUNCED AT CARNEGIE HOUSE

In June the Male Choir makes its biennial weekend tour to Yorkshire performing in the magnificent Selby Abbey. AHNUH VALENTINE’S UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

Awen Cultural Trust, the organisation responsible for managing the Grand Pavilion, Maesteg Town Hall and a number of other community facilities, has joined forces with Bridgend Town Council to create a new programme of live events and workshops for Bridgend Town Centre’s arts venue – Carnegie House. The new programme begins at the end of April and will feature lunchtime theatre, comedy nights, children’s theatre, poetry evenings as well as live music. The participatory programme will include adult drama and dance classes as well as young writers workshops hosted by award winning local writer Rhian Edwards. Rhian said: “I am delighted to be working with Awen and Bridgend Town Council as they re-launch the arts programme at Carnegie House. It is vital that local people are able to access activities on their doorstep that enable them to learn new skills, make friends and enjoy themselves” Ceri Evans, Director of Business Development for Awen, added: “Awen is delighted to be branching out into Bridgend Town Centre through this exciting new partnership with Bridgend Town Council. KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR The Choir’s season continues as planned with both new & old songs being practised twice weekly. On April 8th, the Male Voice & Youth Choirs performed at a PSP Charity Concert at The Bethlehem Life Centre, & included 2 firsts from a new repertoire. The Choir was conducted by Phil Juliff. Impressive performances were also delivered by Youth Choirs Da Capo & Crescendo (conducted by Kathryn Brace), and soloists Soprano Charlotte Ellett, Mitchell & Elys Davies, Kate Leyland & Ben Cowan. Local singer and songwriter Ahnuh Valentine will be performing at numerous local venues over the next coming months including Blaengarw Workingmen’s Club, Bridgend on May the 20th and The Park View, Merthyr on Sunday May 28th. What’s most exciting is that Ahnuh will be performing for the charity Mirus Wales at their Celebration Awards Event in The Principality Stadium on the 5th of May between 16:00 – 17:00, which is set to be a great charity event. Ahnuh recently performed at ‘A Social Evening with a Difference’ for her seventh year, for the Mayor of Bridgend and says “I had a great time performing for The Mayor of Bridgend in the Heronston Hotel on the 5th of April. Thank you to BCBC for choosing me to return as your guest artist for the 7th year in a row. It’s always a pleasure.” The event raised a great amount of money for the Mayor’s chosen charities. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I finally got to play a test-pressing of The Big Fat Blues Band, the side project of Bridgend’s Phil Jones, vocalist with rock band Sex. I’m not a blues fan, but if you are, this 11-track album won’t let you down! It still features Phil’s strong song-writing prowess and humorous lyrics and no doubt will go down a storm live. Stand out songs are ‘Rockin’ Round The UK’ and ‘Mr Jones’ Answer Phone’. They are touring soon, so don’t miss them. Another must see is Last Flight To Pluto’s gig at The Scene, Swansea on 4th May. Big congratulations to Porthcawl’s Rebecca Hurn for her Cardiff Music Awards for Best Single. So well deserved! The career of my former drummer, Ryan Aston, is also taking off. He’s done a European tour in James Arthur’s band, with dates in the U.S.A., London’s Royal Albert Hall and the BBC’s One Show with Imelda May. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Do you have a favourite film director? Mine is Michael Powell, who made many wonderful films during the wartime and post-war years when he worked with screenwriter Emeric Pressburger. Between them, they produced some of the most magical moments in British cinema history. Powell has rightly been described as a maverick of the big screen, with films like ‘A Canterbury Tale’, ‘I Know Where I’m Going’, ‘A Matter Of Life And Death’, ‘Black Narcissus’ and ‘The Red Shoes’ to name but five. Strangely, though, his most notable film, in my opinion, is the 1936 dramatised documentary entitled ‘The Edge Of The World’, when he undertook, on his own, the task of relating the story of the depopulation of a remote Scottish island, based on the evacuation of St Kilda a few years earlier. It is hard to imagine that the film is now eighty years old, for it has so much to tell us about story and film technique. Powell’s film career went into decline in the 1960s, following adverse comments from the critics about his film ‘Peeping Tom’, but nowadays there is renewed interest in his work, and rightly so. The winner was the member with the highest total from their 2 highest scoring entries and it was extremely close with 3 members tied in 1st place, David Jones, Patricia Kendrick and Richard Jenkins so we then had to include their 3rd highest entries to establish the winner and David won by just 1 point with Patricia in second place and Richard in 3rd. ART IN FOCUS On permanent display at the National Museum in Cardiff is an extraordinary piece that occupies the boundary between painting and sculpture. It is Sir Edward Burne-Jones’ (1833-1898), Perseus and the Graiae 1877. It was the centrepiece for one of his most ambitious narrative schemes. If completed, there would have been ten panels: six scenes that were oil paintings and the others, like this one, in low relief panels. This panel depicts the moment when Perseus meets the Graiae: three perpetually old women, sisters to the gorgons and possessing one eye and one tooth between them. Between his fingers, Perseus holds the eye after stealing it from them, using the promise of its return to make them tell him the way to find Medusa. He stands centrally over the linked, crouching figures of the sisters, and above him is a long Latin inscription which tells the story. Burne-Jones worked on the panel with his studio assistants and the gesso-specialist Osmund Weeks. However, it was not well received when exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1878, and Burne-Jones abandoned the remaining low relief scenes: this is, therefore, the only one of its kind. Sport COWBRIDGE TENNIS CLUB

Cowbridge tennis club recently held a tournament to celebrate the opening of the newly laid tennis courts and floodlighting. The official opening cutting of the red ribbon was carried out by our oldest member Mr Peter Launder and the youngest Gracie Duggan. A great day was had by all with 3 tournaments for the senior and one for the juniors. The club has a thriving membership including many Porthcawl residents and there are opportunities for all to play most nights, Saturday afternoons and Ladies mornings so you can play where you feel most comfortable. We have 3 mens and 2 ladies teams about to embark on the summer league season having just finished a very enjoyable winter league season (keep an eye out in the Seasider for match reports this summer). This year we are entering junior tennis teams in leagues as result of our popular free coaching sessions for junior members every Saturday at 4pm. Coaching is led by our resident coach with many keen members helping out. PORTHCAWL CRICKET CLUB JUNIOR NEWS The summer is here and so is the start of a New Cricket Season in Porthcawl. Training for all Junior Members is every Friday at Locks Lane 6.00pm till 7.30pm, and we always welcome new members. Further to the success of our Skills Cap Programme last year, we will continue to help develop our young cricketers throughout the summer months, as well as playing against local sides in the SWJCL League. We will be taking part in U9’s / U10’s / U11s / U13’s and U15’s inter club matches this year. There are 2 great new initiatives starting this year also. We will be a Centre for the New ECB All Stars Cricket programme, aimed at bringing in young players from 5-8 years old into the game. Our coaches will be visiting the local schools shortly to run sessions and provide information on how to join. We will also be the host club for a Girl’s Only National Development Centre this summer. Training is going to be every Tuesday evening at the ground with players attending from all over the district, this will be one of only three NDC’s in South Wales. Sport PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS Huge thanks to everyone who chose us in the local Co-ops recently. We’ve just had the final figure in and thanks to your generosity, we have been awarded £4861.33! This will be spent on equipment for the nippers, so that they can train safely, and spend more time in the water honing their skills. The Easter break has seen the return of the paid lifeguards for the season, so lets hope for a long hot summer, where they’re not called into action very much! Our junior members are also working hard with theory work to qualify for the NVBLQ, and the Junior lifesaver award. These qualifications enable them to become professional lifeguards themselves, either on the beaches, or in swimming pools and holiday parks, so it becomes a pastime that they can get paid for. A quick heads up for all those who fancy a challenge - The “Around the Bay Swim” will take place on Sunday July 30th. It gives you the opportunity to try a sea swim in a supervised environment, with many lifeguards on duty, you’ll be watched all the way around. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT At the time of writing mid-April we have hit a flat spell with no waves for a week or so and none forecast. The weather is warming up nicely and with the light evenings we are definitely in the early months of summer with Lambs frolicking on the side of the road and House Martins over the watermill pond. The last waves we had were at the end of March when we had some good 4ft surf with still freezing water temperatures. All the surf breaks broke well in good conditions. This time of year when the water is freezing at sea and in the river and estuary and as the sun gets stronger, the estuary can be seen full of mist early morning. Sport PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 7S

What an amazing first season it has been for Porthcawl U7s rugby team! We started our journey together during the summer last year when we held our pre-season training sessions. As Porthcawl RFC’s youngest team we had a very important job of giving the players their first experience of rugby and at the same time making it fun. We had a very strong uptake with over 20 young players turning up every week. When the season got fully underway last September we had a busy fixture list with games on most Sunday mornings both at home and away and in all weather conditions! We have visited rugby clubs across the Bridgend district and further afield such as Glynneath and Fairwater. The experiences of these games has been invaluable with a fantastic community spirit. As coaches our main focus is always having fun whilst developing important skills, we follow the WRUs half a game initiative where all players play at least half a game. During the season we linked closely with Ospreys in the Community and have been lucky enough to have been flag bearers on the pitch in 3 Ospreys games, 2 in the Liberty Stadium and more recently at the Principality Stadium – what an amazing experience for the team! We are really looking forward to taking the players forward as the new Porthcawl RFC U8s team next season. We are currently looking to secure some sponsors for our new kit, if anyone is able to support us in any way, please get in touch. PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8’S

A couple of weekends off meant that the team played less fixtures. They had a game against Llanharan at South Road. Llanharan were very compelling and gave our boys a very good game, in the end the final score was Porthcawl 11 and Llanharan 7. We also participated in the district festival at Kenfig Hill RFC where it was a stunning sunny day that really suited our boys and our expansive passing rugby. The day was a great opportunity to play all the teams in the district and the boys enjoyed plenty of rugby with games against Tondu, Kenfig Hill, Bridgend Sports, Bridgend Athletic, Valley Ravens, Nantyfyllon and Pencoed. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that supported our Nigel Owens and Kingsley Jones evening, which was a massive success and will benefit the boys hugely in the seasons to come.
