MY MUM, MAIR HARRHY Dear Editor, My mum, Mair Harrhy, died in August this year at the age of 98, and I would like to thank the many residents of Porthcawl especially the traders in Well Street and John Street and the staff in the Pavilion who have shown her such kindness and support over the last few years. As she became frail and her vision got worse many people would help her to cross roads and hold her arm when the sea breezes threatened to blow her over. Indeed on a couple of occasions she had to be helped to her feet after going out to see the rough seas, which she loved. She spent the first 27 years of her life, including the war, living at the General Picton in New Road and returned from London to spend the last 20 years at Pavilion Court. She would have been delighted to read John Jenkins letter in the October issue of Seaside News. She was always thinking of ways to improve Porthcawl. She loved the town and was delighted when her campaign to stop a road being built through Griffin Park was successful with the help of Alun Cairns. Her efforts to restore the road train to Rest Bay were less successful and she missed her visits to the boot fairs, which she had enjoyed. This year there will be a new ‘Oldest resident born in Porthcawl’ at the annual Jenkin Henry Tea. She had ideas to improve that too! More chance to chat to each other, to be told the names of the others attending including their maiden names, the ones they used when they were in school together back in the twenties and thirties. The history she was interested in was of the thirties and forties when she was young. If anyone has her photos of the Dutch army soldiers at the Picton, I would love to have copies, they seem to have gone astray and I’d like to take them to the Dutch Army Museum in the Netherlands. EMYR’S KARAVAN4THEKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE GET £40,00

0 TAR Dear Editor, Amazingly, we have already raised over £25,000 - thank you so, so much for all who have raised or donated recently great effort and very kind! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. It wasn’t there for Emyr and others but we can change that now. Please run, walk, jump, dance - anything you can do again. On Friday 15th December at then Stage Door Grand Pavilion we will be holding a Christmas Cabaret Night with songs from West End stars. Tickets are £7 and available from Pietros Cafe, The Esplanade. Please visit our website to register or see upcoming events http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900 493697 We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin & Huw Owen, Paul Downes & Christian Evans

A TOURIST ATTRACTION

FOR THE SAKE OF SOME WEED KILLER Dear Editor, I would first like to comment on Mr John Jenkins letter in the October issue…”great”…which obviously highlights the fact that no one from the BCBC walks the town center, or that if there is their report is not acted upon. All over the Porthcawl town center there is so many weeds and grass that could have been sprayed at the beginning of the visitor/growing season with weed killer to improve the appearance. This can be seen at it’s worst on the ‘Jewels’ of the town - the promenade and the harbour. Also John street and too many more to mention. It is a great shame that the public have to write letters of this type when we pay into a council that is responsible for the upkeep of the town. BOOK OF THE MONTH The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye by David Lagercrantz If you enjoyed Steig Larsson’s Millennium series, then you will have read Lagercrantz’s follow up and be eagerly anticipating this complicated, but fascinating novel. The story of Lisbeth Salander continues with her sentenced to two months in Flodberga women’s prison for saving a young boy’s life. Mikael Blomkvist makes the long trip to visit every week and receives a lead. For him, it looks as if it will be an important expose for Millennium. For her, it could unlock the facts of her childhood and the meaning of her dragon tattoo.

On 20th November 1917, at the Battle of Cambrai hundreds of tanks breached the German Hindenburg Line for the first time, in a surprise attack. Yet within three weeks any British advantage had been lost, resulting in many casualties. Amongst them were most of the officers and men of the 17th/18th Battalion Welsh Regiments, who died defending the British position at Bourlon Wood, 23rd November. Both battalions began life at Porthcawl. In 1914, the height restriction of 5’6” for enlistment was removed. Consequently, the 17th Battalion, 1st Glamorgan Bantams, began enlisting on 22nd December; and then on 31st January 1915, as the last recruits of the 17th Battalion, left, the first recruits of the 18th Battalion, 2nd Glamorgan Bantams, arrived. It was not until 12th July 1915, that the 18th left Porthcawl, with residents lining the route to the train station. On 3rd February 1919, in recognition of their service and sacrifice, the Prince of Wales, on behalf of King George V, presented the 18th Battalion with a King’s Colour. Due to the close ties established with the town, the standard was brought to Porthcawl and still hangs in All Saints Church. Ceri Joseph

CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL

During our day celebrating receiving our Eco Platinum Award, held at the end of the summer term, a cherry tree was planted in commemoration. It has established well and we look forward to enjoying the blossom in springtime. Enhancing the environment also extends beyond the school gates. Our Year 6 children have ‘adopted’ the raised planter outside and they donned their gardening gloves to help ensure there is some winter colour. Year 3 and 4 children experienced a very different environment during a visit to the Celtic Village at St Fagans. In the Roundhouse they learned about the life of the Celts, handled artefacts and tried their hands at spinning wool. Whatever we are doing, it is vital to know what to do in an emergency. We learned about this and how to treat bumps and Recently we held our annual Open Evening for prospective Year scrapes in a special assembly and the Year 5 and 6 children had 7 pupils next September and were absolutely delighted by the more detailed workshops. The Year 2 children are also learning to response and the numbers who attended. If you missed it, don’t keep safe on the road during their Kerbcraft lessons. worry, you can book a visit by calling school on 774100, or get more information from our website: www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Finally, thanks go to everyone who generously donated to our Harvest Festival in aid of the Foodbank and to Fr Duncan. Mr Since then, the transition programme has been full steam Mills even raided his allotment for some interesting fruit and ahead. We welcomed Year 6 pupils from inside and outside our vegetables to make this a super assembly. catchment area to Science transition. Pupils enjoyed a great Sue Jones morning carrying out four experiments, (including using a Bunsen burner), to find out which of the suspects had kidnapped me! Coinciding with European Day of Languages, the MFL department hosted Porthcawl’s very own Eurovision Concert, ‘Eurosition’! Primary pupils were split into three groups learning songs in Welsh, French and German with complex choreographed routines and competed against each other for the Eurosition title! Congratulations to ‘Les Frenchies’ who won, singing ‘Chez Mama Africa’. A special thank you to Huw John from the Co-op in Porthcawl who kindly visited us three times, introducing Year 7 pupils to healthy eating as part of the new ‘Successful Futures’ curriculum. He brought in food from the shop and gave up his own time to share with the pupils. We are so grateful, and the pupils thoroughly enjoyed tasting all the exciting products. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

It has been a very busy and exciting start to the Academic Year at Cefn Cribwr School. We welcomed Mr Russell and Miss Thomas to the staff and wish them a happy time here with our wonderful pupils. Our new School Council and Eco Council have started work quickly and have some wonderful ideas for improving the school. We are listening! Our Rugby and Netball teams have enjoyed playing every Friday and are putting together a string of strong performances. We held a competition to design the new school rugby jersey and the School Council examined the entries on set criteria. After several rounds of judging the winning designer was Ellis Lloyd. Da iawn Ellis. His design will now be turned into our new shirt! The school prides itself on its community interaction and we will be taking part once again in this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at the village War Memorial. This is an important day in the village’s calendar and the pupils are very much at the heart of this act of Remembrance.

school reports MADELEINE MOON MP PRESENTS CHEQUE TO ST CLARE’S WINNERS

Madeleine Moon, MP for Bridgend visited St Clare’s School Porthcawl to present a cheque for £3,000 and a trophy to the national winners of Shell’s ‘Bright Ideas Challenge’ competition. Team Chipachapachino comprised four boys now in Year 10: Theo Quantick (Team Captain), Ben Jones, Dylan Walker and Dan Wigglesworth. Madeleine Moon addressed the senior school in a special assembly and reminded them what a fantastic achievement it was for the team to have won 1st in Wales and 3rd in the UK. Team Captain, Theo, explained that Shell’s ‘Bright Ideas Challenge’ had really got them thinking about the future they’ll be living in. Their winning idea was an energy smart house. They were inspired to see how the things they’re learning about in Science could change the world. The boys were proud to show their local MP their newly refurbished Science labs as well as the new boys and girls changing rooms, which had been completed over the summer. Mrs Moon has also promised to put the boys in touch with Cennin Renewables ‘Solcer House’ on Stormy Down - designed by the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University. NEWS FROM YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR At the beginning of term, we were privileged to host the launch of the Language Charter on behalf of Llangynwyd’s family of schools. What an exciting way to start the year. It was a great event, opened by Mr Carbis, Welsh language Standards and Strategy Officer for Central South Wales Consortium. DJ Rhys Upton, Tudur Phillips, Heini and Seren Morse provided some fantastic entertainment. Stalls and other activities were run by Menter Bro Ogwr, Mudiad Meithrin, Siop yr Hen Bont, Welsh for Adults, the Urdd and Bridgend’s Childcare Team. Our School Council, Eco Committee, Ambassadors, Digital Leaders and Welsh Charter Crew have all been elected and are busy getting to grips with their responsibilities. Spanish, French, Science, Arts and Sports clubs are all well underway and proving very popular. Our partnership with the Ospreys is also proving very successful. Pupils have really enjoyed our recent theme weeks of autumn for the Foundation Phase and Fireworks for KS2. Their enthusiasm as they participate in their various activities has been a delight to see. We look forward to more exciting activities over the next half term. Ceri Thomas

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 3 and 4 went on a wonderful trip to The FED World Buffet in Cardiff. We tried lots of different food from lots of different countries! Surprisingly lots of the children loved the Sushi! We all took part in holding The Macmillan Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning. We had a wonderful turn out, with lots of parents and grandparents coming along to support such an amazing charity. There was a huge selection of cakes, tea and coffee on sale and each class provided entertainment by performing some lovely songs. We are so pleased to announce that the event raised £500. A big thank you to all who took part. Year 5 and 6 have been studying the events of World War Two. Our topic began with a visit to the fascinating 1940’s museum in Swansea Bay, where the pupil’s experienced the sights and sounds of an authentic Swansea street during the Second World War. We sheltered below ground during a German air raid, tried on wartime clothes and learnt about how food was rationed. We also had a school visit from an educational historian who facilitated an interactive workshop and brought in a range of resources including deactivated weapons! Rachel John Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS This half term has gone really quickly and we have had lots of fun learning new things. Children learn best when they are totally absorbed in what they are doing; providing interesting contexts for learning Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills is key. This is what our children said about this half term: I like Muddy Mondays; learning outside and getting dirty – Emma (4). Building a new house for the 3 pigs and getting woodlice on our hands – Honor (5). Digging and splashing in the mud – Cameron (5). Sticking sticks into apples and getting squirted with apple juice- Neve (5). Using a real mile long fireman’s hose and jetting it at the willow was sooo exciting - Declan (6) and Joel (7). I’ve loved writing real books. My imagination is silly but serious at the same time which helps my stories be really good - Cameron (8). Looking at a real liver was great then sculpting it with salt dough - Zak & Riley (9). Visits to Porthcawl Comp – doing an experiment on the Headmaster and working out who had kidnapped him! – Darcy (10). We can’t wait to see what the new half term brings! Joanne Rowley

school reports BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have had a really busy start to the academic year and have loads of exciting projects and trips taking place. Lauren Taylor from Interactive Media has been entered for the prestigious ‘Jonathan Cape Short Story Competition’ run by the Guardian newspaper. The annual awards, for aspiring cartoonists, offers the chance to be published and win a cheque for £1,000. Winners will be announced before Christmas, so watch this space. In Bridgend College we love to hear from our past students and sometimes lucky enough for them to give their experiences to our current learners. Performing Arts welcomed Adam Taylor who ran a workshop with the musical theatre students. Adam studied musical theatre at the college and also won the Beacon Award for student of the year. After leaving College Adam trained at the prestigious Bird College and was awarded a DADA (dance and drama award). Since then he has been working on Mamma Mia and Shrek the Musical, and we wish him all the best for his future. Adam Richards, Bridgend College arichards@bridgend.ac.uk IMAGE: Lauren Taylor: Tracked

We hope that everyone had a super summer. Well, here we are at the start of another school year and all the children have settled in well and are working hard in their new classes. The new intake of Tiddlers are exploring their new surroundings and making new friends. Thank you to all our families for their fantastic support at our Macmillan Coffee Morning. We raised an incredible £863.05 helped by a special donation from Ella in year 6 who cleaned cars and raised a whopping £27.37! We received a visit from Adrian Townsend, a renowned children’s author. He spoke to our children about where he gets his inspiration for writing from and how he writes his books. His wonderful books were available to buy and Mr Townsend held a book signing session. There have been many trips and visits to lovely places of interest with lots of learning experiences for all children and staff. What a busy half term we have had already! Lots of things are planned for next half term and Christmas is just around the corner!’ Karen Harris

BRYNTEG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

AFON Y FELIN NEWS Our KS2 children have enjoyed learning to build and programme Lego robots, we have held weekly sessions since the start of term, under the guidance of Josie and Ian from Big Learning Co. Our very good friend Lizzie, who choreographed and coached us in our entry in the Urdd Eisteddfod, is back! She is teaching creative dance to our older pupils, they all enjoy participating in these sessions. Year 2 have now commenced Kerbcraft, very important for their safety when out with family or friends. Our after school clubs are very popular as always, including Active Kids, Eco Club, Sports Club and Music Club. We have also reintroduced Brass instruments as an option along with strings and woodwind. Artist Justine Stroud is working with the children to create a giant mosaic mural, and it will be attached to the wall when our roof is finished. Congratulations to our hardworking PFA who raised a whopping £162.50 at the recent Macmillan coffee morning. Mes Bach enjoyed the sunshine to go on an autumn spider hunt, they didn’t find any spiders, but geese! Please don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, lots of photographs to see! On 28th September we were delighted to welcome so many people to our school for Brynteg’s annual open evening. It was particularly pleasing for us to be able to welcome so many parents, carers and students from our cluster primary schools. A special mention must go out to all our fantastic students who gave up their time to help. The feedback received has been very positive. The next day we wasted no time when the sixth form prepared our Macmillan coffee morning. They did a fantastic job at coordinating the event across the school. Total raised: £572.91. On 4th October Brynteg hosted the Band of the Welsh Guards. Pupils from local schools joined us for the unique experience. The day was jam-packed but the highlight had to be when the Band performed a marching display within the grounds of Brynteg to an enthusiastic audience. The afternoon ended with a stunning mini concert and musical extravaganza from the Welsh Guards and pupils. Brynteg pupils were amazing ambassadors for our school and thanks must be said to Band Master David Hatton and the Band of the Welsh Guards for making this day truly unique in Brynteg’s history.

CYNFFIG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL This term we proudly unveiled our Snow pup at the Red Dragon Centre Cardiff. Our pup Gelert, named after King Llewellyn’s loyal hound, is part of Cardiff’s Snow Dog Trail raising money for Ty Hafan. Its eye-catching decoration included designs by pupils Heather Phillips, Shauna Lewis and Kelsey Williams and was inspired by the ethos of Cynffig. Our pup includes a collar of intertwined helping hands as well as the words unity, support, kind and caring which pupils felt truly epitomises our school community. Congratulations to Mr Williams and the Year 10 WBQ pupils who created and painted our pup. Year 6 pupils from our primary schools visited and sampled some of Cynffig’s delights with folk dancing and poetry with the Welsh department, cerddoriaeth roc in the music department and tapas and fiesta fans in Spanish. We also welcomed parents and pupils past and present in our annual Presentation Evening. The event was a fantastic opportunity to praise the effort and endeavours of our pupils publically and celebrate their many achievements. Thanks also to our guest speaker former Head Girl Katie Wintle who spoke passionately about how her education and experiences at Cynffig had prepared her for a career in Law.

poets corner HEAVEN

A carpet of green and a ceiling of blue With the sun and the stars, maybe God peeking through Is this how a child may view heaven? But galaxies, black holes and billions of stars Space ships and light years and landing on Mars And is this how a man may view heaven ? But one came down to earth to tell us heaven is near God’s kingdom within you, delivering from fear Of goodness and joy and peace in God’s Son Step out of your darkness, the Kingdom has come This, this can be our view of heaven. And we’ll step out of all that is passing away No more dying, or tears or signs of decay No more earthquakes or wars for the nations are gathered To worship God’s Son, for his kingdom has come Oh may this be our view of heaven Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

TWO AUTUMN DAYS

The rain raps on my window, A most unwelcome guest. The wind howls down my chimney, Cold blasts from the west. The sky so grey and heavy, Overshadowing the land. I huddle by the fireside, My book clutched in my hand. Awakening the next morning, Through the blinds I peep. Above the far horizon The sun begins to creep. The sky around is clear and blue Those clouds have blown away. No rain or wind to spoil our play, I rush out to greet the day. As the sun climbs in the sky I hurry to the lake. Two stately swans glide slowly by, Ripples in their wake. I gaze at the reflections, A wonder to behold. The trees with Autumn colours Of russet, red and gold. Two autumn days, like chalk and cheese, Wrapped up in my memories. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

ODE TO A STAIRLIFT

1. I stood down in the hallway, gazing up the stairs, How I could climb up there was the main point of my prayers. It would be so painful with my back in such a mess And so I bought a stairlift called the Staircase Express. 2. How I used to struggle scrambling on all fours. It used to take me ages to get from floor to floor. But now it seems so easy, my joy runs to excess As I soar up to the landing on the Staircase Express. 3. I still remember all the pain when climbing stair by stair And the fear of falling down again would drive me to despair. But now I glide supremely with just one button’s press And up or down is just the same on the Staircase Express. 4. Family, friends and neighbours all want to have a go And when I charge them one pound coin they rarely tell me No. They go up and they come down and I could not care less Because I’m making lots of cash with the Staircase Express. Bob Davies, North Cornelly

WE DON’T APPRECIATE THE NATURAL BEAUTY

Overlooking the misty meadows, Orange looking horizons in the distant skies, A remarkable feat of beauty, To see with one’s own eyes. The sounds of a bird’s dawn chorus, Which is lovely to be heard, As their parents gather and forage, To feed their little new born birds. We don’t appreciate the natural beauty, With all its sights and sounds, All the birds and insects flying, And the animals upon the ground. You need to get out early in the mornings, And you will be surprised in every way, With the natural beauty, Which surrounds us every day. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

EBB TIDE

How mighty are the waves as they break upon the shore Rising to crash upon the rocks, then reluctantly withdraw To gather up their might again, yet all is now in vain For the tide is on the turn, the sea’s strength in on the wain With turning tide ‘twill crash no more But gentle lap upon the shore E’en so we’ve watched our friend, in God once mighty and so strong So brave to answer to his call, fearing not height nor gloom But now, with age’s weakening, see, the tide is on the wain Sadly we’ve seen her grow confused. She’s weak and so afraid Yet now, as waves lap gentle on the shore Content she rests here, peaceful in her Lord Thank God for this dare devil child, grown to live a life so brave Living always to serve her Lord, and draw others to his love But now she’s resting weak and needy, all her strengths are swept away Though her spirit still is trusting in the love of God above And so she’s resting now content, and waits for that last wave To land her safe on heaven’s shore, embraced by God her praise. (Tribute to Esther, a woman of God) Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

WHO WILL BE THE NEXT CHAMPION FOR HILLSBORO PLACE CAR PARK OLDER PEOPLE? Porthcawl is a wonderful place to live or visit, but Hillsboro Place The Welsh Government has started the process to find the next Older People’s Commissioner for Wales. Sarah Rochira is the current Commissioner who was appointed in June 2012. With her term of office due to end in June 2018 following a two year extension in the role, last month, the Welsh Government invited applications to the post of Older People’s Commissioner from those people interested in becoming Wales’ third Older People’s Commissioner. Wales was the first country in the UK to create the post of Older People’s Commissioner in 2008. Ruth Marks was the first incumbent. The Older People’s Commissioner is the independent champion for older people across Wales. A short list of candidates will be drawn up in November and in January 2018, those successful candidates will be invited to a formal interview by the Advisory Assessment Panel. They will also be invited to appear before the Older People’s Panel (OPP). In my role as First Minister, I will receive reports from both panels and will consider these carefully before making a final decision. It is expected that the new Commissioner will take up their post in June 2018. Carwyn Jones AM for Bridgend

car park is no welcome. It’s still in a state, years after I raised its condition with BCBC. Bridgend has its glossy new Rhiw car park yet there’s been no improvement in the rough and dangerous surface of Porthcawl’s main car park. Potholes filled with rainwater and broken surfaces make it more of an obstacle course than the primary access into the town’s shopping centre. I can understand why, years ago, the council decided to do nothing. The car park was due to be redeveloped as part of the Porthcawl Regeneration Scheme – indeed, it would have been a criminal waste of public funds to spend money resurfacing it when it was due to have a supermarket built all over it. But that scheme is dead and gone – probably never to return. So the council needs to have an urgent re-think and come forward with plans to do this work now – especially as it will be where the majority of visitors to the new Maritime Centre will park. Porthcawl has suffered a lost decade while everything has been on hold. It’s time to move on. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

MINIMISING THE MENINGITIS THREAT HARBOURSIDE NEWS We are making exciting progress on the Maritime Centre project – as you may have noticed, work has already begun on our crane installation on the Eastern Promenade. As part of our Marine Services operation, the crane will help to expand the Harbour’s capacity and enable many more boat owners to access our local waters. We will also be offering off-site storage and launch facilities, so please do get in touch with Barrie Metcalf, Marine Services Manager on 07966 930823 / barrie@porthcawlharbourside.co.uk if you would like more information. SeaQuest Coastal Science & Discovery are delivering their schools. Our workshop leaders visit schools and bring the coast inside to classrooms; educating children on local marine ecology and showing them how they can play their part in protecting it. Last year, our schools sessions were booked up very quickly indeed so if you are interested in finding out more about how SeaQuest can help inspire your pupils, please get in touch with Claire Godfrey on 07816 456905 / Claire@porthcawlharbourside.co.uk as soon as possible. It is the time of year when schools and colleges are back into the full swing of things. For many teenagers this means hard work, but also a chance to meet people and enjoy the company of friends. However, fun and exciting as this is, we should be wary of the increased potential for infection. Teenagers entering college and universities for the first time are most at risk of contracting Meningitis (W). This is due to their increased levels of social interaction and living in close contact in shared accommodation. A risk that has unfortunately grown in recent years, with a rise from 22 cases in 2009 to 117 in 2014 in England and Wales. Meningitis (W) can be fatal in about 1 in 10 cases and can cause long-term health problems, such as epilepsy. However, since the noticeable increase in cases, in 2015 the NHS began offering free vaccines to teenagers and first time university students under the age of 25. For more information see http://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/doityourself/ vaccinations/ACWY/ However, the take up in Wales 2015-2016 for this vaccination was only 38%. With improvement in take up, initiatives such as this will go a long way to reducing the risk. Madeleine Moon MP Welsh Labour MP for the Bridgend Constituency www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

HOW CARERS CAN ACCESS ADVICE AND SUPPORT

BUSINESS FORUM AWARDS HIGHLIGHT LOCAL SUCCESS

Bridgend County Borough Council held its first-ever ‘visioning’ event for carers at the Hi-Tide in Porthcawl recently, and it was a big success. The event brought together people who act as carers for family members, friends and neighbours, and asked them to look at the future of care services in the area. Many of the attendees were not previously known to the authority as carers, so we were able to give them access to information and support that they were unaware of. They worked with organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors to help develop a shared vision on how care services need to adapt and change in order to meet future needs. We will be using the feedback gained from the event as part of an independent report that will help decide how care services may develop further, and how carers can take advantage of further opportunities to discuss what matters most to them. If you are a local carer and would like to find out more about what advice and support is available, you can contact Bridgend Carers Centre on 01656 658479 or call the council on 01656 643643. Alternatively, you can also visit www.bridgendcarers. co.uk or www.bridgend.gov.uk

Porthcawl Surf School were among the winners at the recent 2017 Bridgend Business Forum awards where they picked up ‘Bridgend Tourism Business of the Year’. More than 240 representatives from the local business community were gathered at the event, which celebrates innovation, provide opportunities for networking and demonstrates what the county borough can offer to potential investors. The awards were supported by Bridgend County Borough Council, and other winners included Scott Ewing and Kristian Stark who jointly won ‘Business Student of the Year’, Magenta Financial Planning which was named ‘Start-up Business of the Year’, and Kontroltek Ltd who won ‘Service Business of the Year’. Recycle Direct Ltd were presented with ‘Manufacturing Business of the Year’, William Scott was recognized as ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’, Nemein Ltd won ‘Innovative Business of the Year’, and Wales Interactive Ltd took the ‘Creative Industries Award’. Finally, Kontroltek Ltd picked up a second award by winning the overall category of ‘Bridgend Business of the Year 2017’. The event demonstrated that the area is home to a very high calibre of businesses and entrepreneurs, and it has been fantastic to see so many of them develop into full-blown success stories. COUNCIL BUDGET 2018-19: WHERE WOULD YOU SPEND THE MONEY? Did you know that by 2020, Bridgend County Borough Council estimates it will have covered a nine-year funding gap of £71m? Since the UK Government’s introduction of austerity measures, we have protected frontline services during successive funding shortfalls by downsizing, reducing the frequency of some services, developing creative new solutions such as asset transfers or not-for-profit trusts, and much more. This has saved £36m, but despite the fact that we are already supporting record numbers of vulnerable children and older people, or that the cost of providing social services is likely to double over the next decade, we believe a further £35m still needs to be found in the next few years. So where should we spend our budget? The ‘easier’ options have been exhausted, and we now have to start looking at things like subsidised public transport, public toilet provision and more. There’s no way of achieving this without everyone feeling the impact to some degree, so we need your help identifying which areas to prioritise - you can do this by completing our budget consultation at www.bridgend.gov.uk/future Alternatively, you can get a copy at your local library, email: consultation@ bridgend.gov.uk or call 01656 643664 – closing date is 3rd December. PROGRESS FOR PORTHCAWL You will have already spotted the new bins dotted along the promenade, which have been very well received by the community and visitors this summer. The second phase of the ‘Bin Project’ for Porthcawl Town Council is now underway and Councillors are looking at other areas throughout the town where new bins could be installed or existing bins refurbished to help with the reduction in littering and make Porthcawl a cleaner place to live. Toilets are another item on the top of the Council agenda. Councillors are aware of the concerns raised about the lack of necessary toilet provision in the town and are working on ways to improve this situation. The Council is currently negotiating with BCBC to try and arrange a Community Asset Transfer of the Griffin Park Toilets to ensure that they stay open. If the transfer is successful the toilets are to be refurbished and will be providing a modern unisex, family friendly and DDA compliant facility. In addition the Town Council has made a substantial financial contribution to enable the re-opening of the Grand Pavilion public toilets. Finally the shiny new bench at the bus stop just opposite Hope Chapel on Newton Nottage Road, a much needed and already very well used facility, is courtesy of Porthcawl Town Council. KANDERSTAG

TJ is an 8-year-old Labradoodle. He is an older chap who is looking for an experienced, quiet home with a family who can take the time to help him come out of his shell. He is an independent lad who will need to live with someone who will allow him some space from time to time to do his own thing. He loves to follow his nose, sniffing at every chance he gets. TJ will need an owner who is around for most of the day and build up leaving him slowly over time. He can live with children aged 14 years old and above. TJ will make a lovely addition and with time you will see his fun-loving personality. For more information on TJ, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk.

On September 17th, 10 explorers helped out at the mayor’s civic service at the Catholic Church in Bridgend. It was a great honour to be asked to help out on this special occasion and be able to give something back to the community we both live and help in. On September 29th, the explorer group ran a quiz night at the Grove Porthcawl, along with a raffle. The aim of the evening was to raise both money and awareness for our Kandersteg trip in summer 2018. An enjoyable night was had by all and £235.50 was raised. Upcoming events that the explorers are participating at are a bag pack on October 7th at the Sainsbury’s by the McArthur Glen outlet, another quiz night in Porthcawl (with a date yet to be confirmed), the Christmas swim at Porthcawl, and many more events yet to be finalised. We have received £780 in donations and have fundraised £554.04 ourselves, with many more opportunities to raise more money. If you have any events we can help out at or donations you’d like to give, please contact us at: explorekanderstag2018@ gmail.com

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES One day I heard Jesus’s voice which led me to describe what happened in this poem. The poem will come in a few sections over the months ahead so please put them together. The Voice ‘part 1’: In times of trouble, I heard the voice. So gentle, so sweet, so full of love. The voice seemed ancient, full of experience. I knew it had spoken to many people in past times and that it would speak to many in the future. The voice had always existed, and always would. It somehow spoke truth to me. It knew me, even though I did not know it. Even though I did not know the voice, I knew it was true, there was no falseness, no harm. The voice. It was so comforting, it searched my heart with love. It wanted to become my friend. It showed me a place of peace. A place of beauty. The voice had many promises, promises it could keep. Promises of love, of happiness. The voice wanted to express its hidden love and affection. But I had to say yes. To be continued... Neil Harvey

PORTHCAWL SHOUT FORUM

LOCAL LEADERS OF THE FUTURE

Porthcawl SHOUT Forum, a non-political voice for the over 50’s, ended a busy season in July with Carwyn Jones, First Minister and AM for Bridgend County, fielding a question and answer session covering a wide range of topics; plus a new Chairperson, Rod Colyer, taking over from Gary Victor, who continues his sterling service with projects, such as the ongoing Samtampa exhibition, now awaiting the completion of the Harbourside Development, when a Samtampa monument will grace the front of the building. A much needed break in August, and PSF met in September for an Open Discussion session, and into October with the shock announcement that Des Rees, the President PSF having to retire through ill health, involving his eyesight. His gigantic knowledge of Porthcawl and its current 2006 regeneration programme had been a mainstay, and will be sadly missed. He hopes in six or more months he will be able to return to talk about Griffin Park and its history. October also saw BCBC Be Active team visit, and PSF enjoyed a session of Tai Chi and Wellbeing. December Mark Sheppard - Director of Communities - will visit, so why don’t you join us. First Friday in every month. Rod Colyer

Once again, Rotary in Porthcawl is proud to have continued its history of preparing young leaders of the future through the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Every year a number of young people are sponsored by the club to undertake an intensive leadership experience where skills are developed while having fun and making connections with other candidates. This year, Hannah Parry and Emily Munro-Dawkins were selected at the interview stage to travel to Storey Arms Outdoor Activity Centre for a week of caving, kayaking, orienteering etc. Hannah was nominated by her school, Porthcawl Comprehensive, while Emily, from St Clare’s, was nominated by Porthcawl Sea Cadets. Both had had experience of leadership – Hannah as a Brownie leader and Emily as a Lance Corporal in the Cadets. Amazingly, Hannah and Emily had never met until they got to the Centre and were billeted together! Rotary in Porthcawl would like to thank them both and wish them the best future possible … and will be looking out for next year’s RYLA candidates in the new year! Ivor Williams

THE LEONID METEOR SHOWER Although it’s possible to see a shooting star streaking through the sky almost any night of the year, you will stand a better chance of seeing one during one of the regular meteor showers that take place each year. During November, the Leonid meteor shower will be visible and peak during the night of November 17th and early morning of November 18th. It will be a moonless night so you should be able to see about 20 meteors an hour. Meteor showers are caused by debris left behind by comets and the parent body for the Leonids is Comet Tempel – Tuttle, which was discovered in 1865 and found to have an orbit of 33 years. The comet became lost for a hundred years but was then rediscovered in 1966 when the Earth passed through the meteor trail which produced a storm of several thousand meteors an hour. That won’t happen this year as the comet is presently at the farthest point of its orbit near the planet Uranus. Last November, two large bolides that had broken off from the comet exploded in Earth’s atmosphere each became nearly as bright as the Sun for a few brief moments. Clive Down FRAS

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

As part of the Tesco Bags for Help Grant Scheme, the Talbot was been chosen as one of three projects to go forward to a vote in the Tesco Store, East Bank, Port Talbot. The two months’ collecting blue tokens is now over and we are awaiting news of the winners, second and third places. Fingers crossed! We could win £3,000 to give our garden a makeover. We have had the last of our day trips for this year. Earlier in the summer we visited Carmarthen and Pendine Sands, when it was one of the hottest days of the year. In September we went to Monmouth and then down the River Wye and back to the Old Court Hotel for afternoon tea, what a treat. Beautifully laid tables, best china, warm scones, jam and cream, and as much tea and coffee as we could drink. A most enjoyable day. We are now planning a Sparkle Fashion Show, again in liaison with Bon Marché of Bridgend. This is your chance to see what’s available for the Christmas season. MID GLAMORGAN SAVOYARDS “This comes of women interfering in politics…” - no, the Mid Glamorgan Savoyards are not suddenly becoming sexist; it’s a line from their forthcoming G&S production of ‘Iolanthe’. It was famously used by the press following the election of Margaret Thatcher as PM but so far, no one has dared apply it to our current PM. It’s a familiar G&S satire on government, law and society, with the theme of a tranquil, male dominated civilisation disrupted by women. A fairy marries a mortal; their son wants 42 | seaside news

to marry a Ward of Chancery; all of The House of Peers wants to marry her as well. This will be the Savoyards’ 23rd charity event. To date, well over £60,000 has been raised for 20 different charities. Benefiting from this production are Macmillan Cancer Support, Save the Children Fund, Kidney Research Unit Foundation, Wales and a local charity for bereaved parents following baby loss. It’s a wonderful evening’s entertainment; every year the cast produces high standards of comedy, stagecraft and music. Come along to ‘Iolanthe’ at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, on Saturday November 18th, 7.30pm. Tickets £10 from the Box Office Tel: (01656) 815995 or members of the cast. Dominique Spearey

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH A former missionary I once met told me that she had learned that it was harder for rich people to experience God’s love than the poor. “The poor,” she said, “have so little that they have to rely on God’s love so much more. They just seem so much happier.” I have heard rich people say that the poor are lucky before. But I have yet to hear a poor person say it. The poor do not get closer to God by having less. Poor people are never poor by choice. They are poor because other people have more than their fair share. Jesus said: “Generosity begets generosity”. Generosity ought to inspire others to be generous. Mission works are only worthy when they alert us to injustice in the world and inspire us to change things. Otherwise, they are just self-serving holidays. We can admire the poor people we meet, and we can respect them, but to call them lucky is ridiculous. When generosity produces stupidity it wasn’t really generosity to begin with. But when generosity produces more generosity, it is the real thing. God Bless You. BRIDGEND TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION NEWS Recently, six delegates from BTTA travelled to Hechtel-Eksel in Belgium to honour a Hand of Friendship invitation. The weekend was packed with visits and activities including a ‘Walk and Talk’ describing how the area is developing its Natural Landscapes Programme and also an interesting tour of Camp Beverlo, a training camp for the Belgian Army. The main focus of the visit was to remember the liberation of the town, between September 7-12th 1944, by the Welsh Guards. Each year at this time a memorial service is held there and poppy wreaths were laid by Mike Jones, on behalf of the Bridgend Branch of the Welsh Guards Association and Adrian Kendall, on behalf of BTTA along with other civilian and military groups. This was followed by a prestigious Air Show when delegates were entertained in the VIP enclosure. Following a successful visit, which contained some thought provoking and emotional moments, we now look forward to receiving our Belgian friends in Spring 2018 who are keen to find out more about Bridgend and South Wales

promote your club info@seasidenews.co.uk Last month we hosted a wellattended Coffee Morning at Trinity Church with a raffle and tombola and generated some funds for the Mayor’s Charities. As ever it was a convivial occasion and a chance to welcome many new members and make new friends. Events for November include a talk on 8th at the Hi-Tide about the night sky and astronomical phenomena, as well as a visit on 22nd to the National Trust’s Dyrham Park near Chippenham to see the autumnal colours and hear the clang of deer antlers! Also our Writing Groups will present their popular morning of Stories & Poems at the Grove Golf Club with a buffet lunch to follow. Later this month plans are in hand to celebrate the festive season with tree decorating events around Porthcawl and many social occasions. All in addition to our regular interest group meets - last month alone there were some 96 meetings of interest groups at venues across Porthcawl covering 42 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 5 trainee watchkeepers qualified last month (congratulations!) and our numbers have been boosted by eight new trainees, bringing our complement to 28 watchkeepers and 12 trainees. As well as monitoring traffic in our area, we have been fortunate to observe seals, porpoises and dolphins off the coastline during the summer. Recently, a number of dangerous Portuguese Man O’ War washed up on local beaches and caution is advised. Since our last report, we have had a further six incidents, taking annual figures to 31 in total. Fortunately, the busy Elvis Weekend passed by incident-free for us. We held a bucket collection at Mansell’s Chippy and thanks to his kind hospitality £228.38 was raised. Thanks to all who donated. Our annual Quiz Night was held at the Hi Tide on the 11th October. A fantastic £1227 was raised and we thank all who attended, especially our neighbouring NCI stations at Nell’s Point and Worms Head. Thanks are also due to the Hi Tide, the Atlantic Hotel and the Fairways Hotel for their continued support and generosity. Our watch hours are now 0900hrs to 1700hrs daily. legal advice COSTLY PENSION CONSEQUENCES OF DIVORCE Between 2004 and 2014, Divorce rates rose considerably among people aged over 65. Retirement planning is not likely to be uppermost in a person’s mind when going through a divorce, but recent research suggests that divorced people tend to be worse off in retirement than those who remain married. At retirement age, the family home is not likely to be the only asset available for distribution, and increasingly, divorcing wives are seeking a pension share rather than taking other assets. This is because wives will tend to have taken time off to bring up the family and will not have been in a position to contribute as much to their pension pot as husbands who continued up the career ladder. This causes problems, as working out a fair split of the pension is complicated, as what is best for one party, may not be best for the other. For example, if the husband has a final salary pension, the wife’s share would go into a money purchase arrangement. This is not necessarily fair as the final salary scheme offers certain guarantees, while the money purchase scheme does not, as it is very dependent upon investment returns. If the parties elect for an offsetting arrangement, whereby the husband keeps his pension and the wife the house, this has the advantage of simplicity, but could give different outcomes, as the wife will end up with somewhere to live, but no income in retirement. The third option is earmarking, where part of the pension income is transferred each month to the receiving spouse. However, this is used less, because the payments are taxed at the rate of the paying spouse, who may be on a higher tax rate than the receiving spouse. Further, this arrangement can end upon remarriage, or the death of the receiving spouse. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

A CONSENT ORDER A consent order is a financial order that can be issued by the court when a divorcing couple have reached financial agreement between themselves. If you and your spouse can reach agreement between yourselves, you should always have this made legally binding by getting a consent order. The consent order makes the agreement legally binding. Once a consent order has been finalised, neither of you will normally be able to make a new financial claim against the other Negotiating an agreement is almost always preferable to arguing things out in court and asking a judge to decide. If necessary, you can get help from your lawyers or use mediation. Without a consent order, there is always a possibility that your former spouse will try to make a claim later, there is no limit to how long after the divorce this can happen. Even if you and your partner draw up an agreement between yourselves, this does not have the same effect as a legally binding financial order from the court. You can apply for a consent order at any stage after the decree nisi has been granted. It can be a good idea to get the consent order before the divorce is finalised with the decree absolute. The consent order should include: • Your home - whether it will be sold and the proceeds divided or ownership transferred to one of you; • how other assets such as savings, investments or business interests will be dealt with; • what will happen to personal possessions such as furniture; • how any pension schemes will be shared; • child maintenance for any children; • whether one of you will pay the other spousal maintenance, and for how long; • who will take responsibility for any outstanding debts; • an agreement that neither of you can make a claim as a financial dependant when the other dies. You will both need to complete a statement of information form summarising what capital and income each of you have. These are sent to the court together with the draft consent order and a £50 court fee. The judge will check whether the terms of the agreement are fair and legal. The judge may want to ask a few questions – either in writing or at a hearing – if the agreement seems excessively one-sided. Once the judge is satisfied, the consent order is ‘sealed’ and becomes legally binding.

BIRTHDAY GIRL LYNDA

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

Bridgend Soroptimist Club held their monthly meeting on 11th October at The Heronston Hotel, when members were delighted to celebrate the 80th birthday of long-standing and valued member Lynda Edwards from Porthcawl. A special cake was presented to her by Eileen Bayley (Communications Officer), on behalf of the club, along with cards and gifts. The evening included a presentation by Barnardo’s outlining the ongoing progress of the Family Visitor Centre at HM Parc Prison Bridgend. The club continues to support this initiative and were thrilled that the Childrens’ Story Writing Competition had been such a success and had generated many entries from children who visit their Dads through the Visitor Centre. Next on the club’s agenda for November will be the ‘Brownies Have Talent’ competition. This always generates lots of enthusiasm from local Brownie Packs and produces some surprise results. More on this in next month’s issue so keep a lookout. For more information on Soroptimist activities in the area go to http://sigbi.org/bridgendand-district Eileen Bayley

Tuesday the 10th of October and we were once again in the Talbot Centre for our October meeting. Apologies for absent members given and WI business discussed, members all agreed the quiz in the High Tide was a success. We didn’t win but we had a good night out. Our Christmas party was finalized. Christmas seems to be rushing at us - so much to organise, but we’ll get there. Our speaker was Mr. Chubb who gave a talk on The Welsh Arsenal in Bridgend. It was a very interesting talk and gave us an insight into a very difficult time in our not so long ago past. Most of our members had family or friends who worked there and he was most informative. Our speaker for next month is Rosemary Scaddon - her topic ‘I was Harry Secombe’s stand in’. I’m looking forward to some hilarious stories. Come and listen with us, have a good laugh with good company, plus tea and biscuits. It’s what the WI is all about! You’ll be assured of a warm welcome. Christine Callaghan

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this in early October the weather is unbelievable better than we had in the summer! Long may it continue! We had our usual enjoyable harvest tea with entertainment from our talented members. A good start to the meeting was a presentation of flowers to Ann Barrett on her special birthday! And no - she doesn’t look it! Ann is our long serving Registrar and as an old Porthcawlian. There is not much goes on here that she doesn’t know about! All our groups have been in action Beales is always popular for lunch. The Carmarthen outing was enjoyed despite showers and we are joining the Inner Wheel this month on their Christmas shopping trip to Gloucester Quays. Our meeting this month is on November 8th, 2pm, at All Saints Church Hall - when John Sheen will be introducing us to ‘Five Men and a Pasty’. Sounds tasty so come along and find out. All welcome! PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL Hello my friends. Guy Fawkes night is here and Christmas is just around the corner. Our IW autumn coffee morning will be held in Trinity church hall on Friday the 3rd of November. There will be tea and biscuits, a raffle and lots of stalls. As well as time to chat with your friends. Our ladies have been busy making small trinkets and gifts for Christmas stockings, which will be on one of our stalls for sale. All of these things will be unique. They still find time to knit and sew items for various charities and people in need. Diana Richardson is organising a day trip to the Christmas market in Gloucester quays, just one of the outings that she arranges throughout the year. Our October meeting was smaller than usual, but still very interesting. We enjoyed a lovely meal at the Grove golf club, where we meet on the first Tuesday of every month. Our president had organised a quiz to entertain us after our meeting. We would all like to wish Elizabeth Jones congratulations on the birth of their very special grandson Sidney. Suzanne Jefferies, Club Correspondent

NEWTON WI The October meeting was chaired by our Vice President Pat Richards, who did a great job standing in for the President, who was away on holiday. The speaker for the evening was Sue Brown, who is a Forensic Social Worker, caring for vulnerable adults. She gave us a detailed insight into her working life. The talk ended with questions and answers - it was extremely interesting and enlightening. On November 10th at Trinity Church Hall, we are holding our Christmas Fayre. All are welcome to join us for coffee or tea, whilst finding a bargain to start your Christmas shopping. M Freeman

business & finance DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT At the time of writing, the sky is an eerie colour, dark and a strange orange hue, almost as if there is a storm looming. There is also a certain silence to go with it, definitely something afoot here. Then we find out that the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia will shortly honour us with her presence, so now we know and breathe a sigh of relief. Hang on though, something else is looming too – we discover that inflation is about to be announced as being up to 3% and that the boffins at the Bank of England in Threadneedle Street are making great noises about interest rates having to go up, perhaps within a few short weeks or sooner. Oh help, what about the mortgage? What happens as my current rate is now expired (or about to) and I haven’t done anything about sorting out a new deal? Lenders are already gearing up for the coming days and are edging rates up. So now we know (again) and the outcome will be a balancing act between raising rates and keeping people’s living costs within sensible bounds. So, isn’t it time you sorted that new mortgage deal before it’s too late. We are still accessing superb low deals but if rates rise very soon they’ll be gone. If there’s something you fancy in a sale and you dither, it’ll be gone from under your nose and lenders have a tendency to change rates overnight – so what you thought you had today, is gone tomorrow. With access to the UK mortgage market and a computerised sourcing system showing all available schemes, we can help you find that new deal, quickly and efficiently. All it takes is a phone call and we’ll happily source the best deals for you to make a move on. With over 30 years in helping clients in this way, we’ll be delighted to assist any borrowers, any age. TATA TO GUARANTEED PENSIONS! Why would you want to transfer a final salary pension scheme? Maybe when it’s in deficit and has to be moved to the Government backed Pension Protection Fund (PPF) where benefits are reduced and transfers out prohibited. This is the dilemma Tata Steel employees currently have as the British Steel Pension Scheme goes to the PPF. In the circumstances it didn’t seem unreasonable to find out what the transfer value could do in an invested scheme so off they went to get a transfer quote so they could obtain a Transfer Value Analysis Report to get their heads around the difference, and different they are! You lose a guarantee but gain a great deal of flexibility and financial freedom but also have to take investment risk into account. As our last month’s article would point out there are benefits for and against which is why you need to seek advice not on just the transfer but the ongoing investment as most of these funds are worth more than your house. Just when they thought their deciding was done along came a New Pension Options Pack last week 32 pages of it telling staff they don’t have to go into the PPF after all or transfer out but agree to go into this ‘New’ fund where benefits in some 48 | seaside news

gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

With winter fast approaching our club’s autumn programme of events is well underway. We have a full schedule of talks and demonstrations as well as regular social gatherings and gettogethers that keep us occupied well into next year. In our gardens most of us have been busy keeping them tidy as plants die back – although not too tidy as it is nice to leave some plant foliage for the birds to feed upon seed heads and to give us winter interest. As the soil temperatures begin to cool the opportunity has almost ended for this season to lift and divide plants to keep them vigorous. All is not lost however as spring next year will give us another chance to do this. The surplus plants are often potted up to go towards our annual plant sale, which is held in May of each year. The cuttings that were taken earlier (in late summer and early autumn) have been potted up to continue growing. Some of these will need protection in a cold frame or greenhouse if we have a severe winter. Although most hardy perennials will survive well and will provide new plants to fill our beds and borders next year. Joyce Pegg lalestongardenclub.co.uk

PORTHCAWL ALLOTMENT WINS TWO AWARDS

The Wilderness Allotment Association has been recognised for its work in the wider community with a prestigious international allotment award from The Council of Europe, and another Community Green Flag Award from Keep Wales Tidy. Ken Whyte, Chairman of Bridgend County Allotment Association and Wales Allotment Society, hosted a joint presentation at the Grove Golf Club, Porthcawl attended by BCBC Mayor, Porthcawl Deputy Mayor and representatives of the allotment’s community partners. The awards recognise the allotment committee’s contribution to projects such as maintaining the flower boat on Bridgend Road and building Porthcawl Museum’s wartime gardens. The Wilderness Allotment also hosts an award-winning community/ disabled plot, which has been used by Crossroads, Oakley House, Bridgend College, Porthcawl Stroke Club and now Trinity Care & Support. The Wilderness’ partnerships proved invaluable in helping to reinstate the community/disabled plot after the devastating arson attack in December 2014. With the help of donations following an appeal, the facility was rebuilt and Planning Permission has been obtained for the next step, which is an eco-friendly disabled toilet with a minimal carbon footprint. SENSORY GARDEN

For gardeners November can be the worst month to face! Nature is winding down, air is cold and skies are grey, slowly now the remains of last season are making their way back to the earth (sad really). It’s cleaning time! So give everything a good scrub – to prevent steel tools rusting wipe over with an oily rag. Also, clean the end of stakes and canes before storing for winter, nasty bugs often lurk there. Plant tulips this month, once the other spring bulbs are in, there is a better chance of preventing them being infected with ‘tulip fire’ - sounds exotic but it’s a fungal disease which produces brown spots and twisted distorted leaves – not pretty! Keep tidying your ponds, cut down plants that cause old growth and leaves falling in the pond, these give off gases that are toxic to fish (cheerful this month isn’t it!) One bright thing is you can pull your parsnips after the first frost (which makes them sweeter). Yummy! Did you know the November flower is the Chrysanthemum – the Chinese believe a petal placed in the bottom of a glass of wine before imbibing will prevent grey hair –sounds fun! Chris Early

The staff at Newton Care Home in Newton, Porthcawl have been really busy working on their sensory garden throughout its first few months .We have sensory plants such as lavendar, rosemary, lemon balm, mint, chillis and tomatoes. We have even provided the kitchen staff with fresh strawberries and herbs for their meat and homemade stuffing! The residents have enjoyed getting involved and we are really pleased with the huge sunflowers that we have grown from small plants, which we were given and have already come up with new ideas for next year already! We would like to thank every person that donated to our unique sensory garden for the residents and hope that next year we will be able to grow a lot more. Ema-Louise Lewis

health & wellbeing MANY DON’T SEE THEY’RE A DANGER ON THE ROAD

Regular eye tests are vital for motorists, as poor vision can significantly affect someone’s ability to drive safely. However, the only time a motorist’s eyesight is checked is when they take their driving test. The current system relies on drivers to self-test and keep up-to-date with their eye examinations, but not everyone does. Claire Edwards, director of Specsavers in Porthcawl, says: “Your eyesight can deteriorate slowly, meaning you may not even notice when your eyesight falls below the standard required for driving.” To meet UK driving requirements, motorists need to be able to read a licence plate from 20.5m in clear conditions. If they can’t, their insurance will be invalid. Ms Edwards adds: “That’s why it’s so important to have an eye test every two years, or sooner, if you notice a change in your vision.” Drivers who don’t make the DVLA aware of any issues or fail to have regular eye tests risk serious repercussions if involved in an accident. NATURAL ANTIBIOTICS One of the best natural antibiotics is raw honey, which fights infections on multiple levels. This approach makes it difficult for bacteria to become resistant to it. Garlic is another powerful antibiotic, and it also boasts antifungal and antiviral properties. This is why it was used back in the 1700s to help ward off the plague. Oil of oregano is also known for its ability to kill bacteria, making it suitable for controlling MRSA and other common infections. A 2001 Georgetown University study found that is just as effective at killing germs as most antibiotics, and it also boasts antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, pain relief, and anti-parasitic properties, making it a great all-around essential oil. Another essential oil that has been shown to kill antibiotic-resistant MRSA on skin is tea tree oil. Olive leaf extract possesses the ability to fight bacterial infections, and it’s so effective that some European hospitals are using it in the battle against MRSA infections. While fighting antibiotic-resistant infections, it also supports the immune system. Read more at: www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

CHARITY - A PATHWAY TO WELLBEING So many people are involved in a large spectrum of charity events these days. It’s hard not to say “wow”. Have you ever considered how you prepare your mind and body for an act of charity? Does an act of charity require mental preparation? Have you noticed that certain acts of generosity feel different to one another? There is something inherent in the human mind and body that gives us a flush of joy when participating in such an act. But can you be sure that your accessing this deeper perspective? All emotions are wired into bodily movements. In the ‘Dana Sutta’ the Buddha gives the advice “make the mind glad before giving”. To allow gladness to arrive naturally, meditation is required. Paying attention to this mind and body, slowing down, awareness of breathing, deliberately pausing. Transmission of generosity in Buddhism means that my mind meets your mind. We pause together and I give to you from the position of meeting your needs. There is a momentary click, this bridge of heart kindness between one another is known. You lose yourself and I lose myself in a moment. Joy can flourish between one another. This can be mistaken for intimacy, yes it’s intimate, but if both persons are watchful, restraintful and humble - great transmissions of care, trust, love, kindness become passed over from person to person, even a generation! This process of generosity is worthy of consideration. How many times in one day with your own hands could such consideration be given? Let charity begin in your mind and end with your hands. arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

CHARITY CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS

Following last month’s article in Seaside News, I was asked by a reader if I had made any other films about towns in this locality, not just Porthcawl. The answer is that my local history series covers Bridgend, Maesteg, Port Talbot, Pyle & Kenfig Hill, and, most recently, Penarth. They all have one thing in common, they were shot on film. And each one includes archive footage from the past, usually discovered in old home movies, and still photographs derived from a multitude of sources. The series was in production between 1995 and 2015, and all of the titles are still available on DVD – give me a ring or send a text for further details, if you are interested. Will there be any more? The short answer is I do not know. Each film took up to a year to produce, and was therefore a major undertaking. But they were all great fun to make and, I hope, enjoyable to watch. And most important of all, they provide a record of contemporary life in this part of South Wales, and that fact alone is good reason to make more in the future. Bridgend group of Parkinson’s UK and award winning Bridgend Male Choir combined their efforts to put on a choral evening at the Bethlehem Church Life Centre in Cefn Cribwr recently. The choir performed to a sell out audience, along with Maesteg soprano Rhian Hughes and the Bethlehem Church life Centre’s own Garage Gospel Choir. Enjoyed by all that attended, the concert was a mix of classical and contemporary vocal excellence. The choir, along with Stephanie Bailey conducting and Stewart Roberts accompanying, did not disappoint with impressive harmonies. Soprano Rhian Hughes delighted with her angelic tones, and the Garage Gospel Choir with Pastor Nigel Impson-Fleming at their lead gave uplifting songs of praise. David Burt a long standing member of the Choir, and recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s, took it upon himself to arrange the Concert with overwhelming support from local businesses and the Bethlehem Church Life Centre. Julia Phillips Treasurer of Bridgend Parkinson’s UK branch gave thanks to all involved with in excess of £3,500 raised to aid the continuation of stem cell research at Cardiff University. BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR - ANNUAL CONCERT

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

It was pleasing to see the choir put on a celebration of music to a full house, with a balanced and well-considered programme cinema, opera and musical theatre sitting happily alongside great Welsh hymns and spirituals. The rousing ‘Builth’ set a confident tone for the evening, with lighter songs including the wonderful ‘What would I do without my Music’ and the poignant ‘For the Fallen’. Soloists Stewart Roberts, cello, and Scott Williams, organ, provided some lovely touches with Mendelssohn’s ‘Song without Words’, and Kara-Elert’s ‘Nun danket alle Gott’. Charlotte Vaughan provided a breathtaking display of her vocal range and characterisation, with Gounard’s ‘Je Veux Vivre’ and ‘Glitter and be Gay’ from Candide and the beautiful Welsh version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ bringing the audience to its feet to a well-deserved ovation. Introductions seamlessly carried out by Beverley Humphreys and resident accompanist, Stephanie Bailey, as faultless as ever. The Choir displays a strength of harmony, great handling of dynamics and sensitivity towards the mood and emotions of the music along with vocal clarity – achievements which are in no small part down to the ability of Ryan Wood, its Musical Director. For an audience, it’s a community that is wonderful to be witness to and part of. I’m already looking forward to next year’s roof-raising celebration of music! Plenty of music news as always. Good to see John Sloman doing some local gigs and based in Cardiff again. John found fame in the late 1970s with Welsh band Lone Star before carving out a fantastic career as lead vocalist with Uriah Heep, and singer with the late Gary Moore on his live album ‘Rockin’ Every Night – Live In Japan’, as well as several solo records including ‘Disappearances Can Be Deceptive’. His most recent releases have been ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ (2016), and this year’s ‘The Taff Trail Troubadour’. Check John out on Youtube, and more on him soon! Big thanks to Jayce Lewis for the invite to his sell-out show with Gary Numan – sorry I didn’t make it, but glad the tour’s going well! However, a band I did catch was The Electric Company, and was very impressed. Anyone who plays Genesis and Rush can’t be all that bad! Drummer Jonathan Kinsey played in my band in 1999, when we supported Lindisfarne on some dates, so it was good to catch up with him again. Well, better get back to putting my Christmas tree up – keep your news coming and maybe I’ll give you a review! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: John Sloman

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our Chairman’s Trophy Competition. Each member entered four images taken either on our summer field trips or on camera club practical evenings and was judged by our chairman Glyn Edmunds. There were a lot of very good entries mixed with some fun ones. The winner was new member William Baker, winning his very first competition with a lovely image taken at Swansea Marina, well done William. The competition was followed by a wonderful presentation by Glyn showing images and short videos taken on his recent African safari. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in St Clare’s School, Newton. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk.

After a very successful annual concert this year in the Grand Pavilion held recently, Mr Howard Evans, Chairman of the choir, made a special presentation to a very special chorister. Brian Whitehead , who had been a member of the choir since 1982, was presented with a certificate of Life Membership. Since joining the choir Brian has been a very active and stalwart member. He has held the position of Secretary on two occasions, firstly in the late 1980’s and secondly from 1997 to 2000. He was also heavily involved in organising concerts abroad for the Choir visiting Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain and France – all of which turned out to be unforgettable tours. For the last 20 years Brian has provided support to the choir in designing and printing of various posters, leaflets and flyers, and he is the person responsible for designing the excellent Annual Concert programmes. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Brian. He received his certificate to loud applause and cheers from the assembled members of the choir and their guests. VICAR OF DIBLEY RIDES AGAIN IN SUPPORT COMIC RELIEF Following its success at the Greenhall in Cefn Cribwr last November, Stage Right Productions are back to give a second instalment of this incredibly funny play. We pick up the action where last year’s play finished, following on from Hugo and Alices’ wedding. The new play centres around the Christmas Edition titled the ‘Second Coming’. Featuring the nativity scene where Alice gives birth to what she believes is ‘the messiah’… fretting over the responsibility of having given birth to the son of God “such a responsibility”. Featuring your old favourites Jim “No No No No” Trot as Billy Jean King, Owen Newitt as Elvis and Frank Pickles as Stephen Hawkins, the play really does turn out to be quite the hoot! At the centre we have our suffering, chocolate addicted Vicar who, along with David Horton and Mrs Cropley, really do make this a night to remember. Stage Right will once again be raising money towards Comic Relief with this production. The show will take place between the 16th – 18th November and includes a Matinee Performance on the 18th. Tickets are only £10 each and are available to book on line at TicketSource.co.uk or by phoning 01656 646321. A great way to start off your Christmas Festivities.

“GUTEN TAG” - COR BRO OGWR Choristers are busy practising their German phrases prior to their tour to Bridgend’s twin town of Langenau in Southern Germany over half term. During the week’s visit we will be taking part in the 500 years Reformation Anniversary at the Martinskirche in Langenau, giving a lunchtime concert in Ulm Minster and joining a young ‘Gospelchor’ for an evening concert. There will be time for a visit to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, which served as the inspiration for the Disney Sleeping Beauty castle and a visit to Stuttgart. The Langenau Committee will be hosting an evening reception and a party. There’s also a trombone concert! Our conductor Rosie Howarth will have no trouble making herself understood as she is a fluent German speaker. Glenn Crooks, our accompanist, will be coming too, plus some choristers from Rosie’s other choirs. Looking ahead to our next concert, our programme will contain excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and a lively variety of contemporary songs and carols. This will take place on 9th December at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl, at 7pm. Tickets £10 at the door or tel. 01656 653326. www.cor-bro-ogwr.com Dominique Spearey seaside news | 55

sport reports REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB JUNIOR SECTION

Have you ever wondered what happens after life as a nipper? Let us introduce you to Rest Bay Lifeguard Club Juniors! The Junior section caters for 12-19 year olds and teaches a range of surf lifesaving skills. This season has been our best yet! We competed in the Welsh Championships at Aberavon on the 5-6th of August and came 2nd; an outstanding result for a relatively small team. We went on to take part in the GB Championships in Cornwall, with a team of fourteen young athletes and achieved 10th place out of 30 teams. We would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors for this season; Taylor Wimpey, The Co-Op and One Stop, who helped with much needed equipment. Also, a massive thank you to Porthcawl Uniforms who rushed an order through, to help us be one of the smartest teams on the beach! If you are interested, it’s never too late to come and join our growing section, to keep fit, make friends and master lifesaving skills. We train every Thursday night at Pyle Pool between 8 and 10pm. Hope to see you there. Contact email: arranoutdoors@gmail.com

online aimed at junior teams and Porthcawl were drawn at random as a winner”. The team won £300 and decided to invest the money in new kit for the side. Lloyd Rowe, Coach of the team, said: “We are extremely grateful to Porters for the sponsorship money as it allows us to give the children new kit to play in, something we’ve been looking to do for a while”. The sponsorship deal comes at an exciting time in the company’s history as they will shortly be celebrating 21 years in Business. Founded by Paul Porter in 1996, the business has grown from strength to strength to become one of the areas leading property experts. Rebecca commented “We are celebrating 21 years in business this year and have extensive knowledge of the local property market including buying, selling, renting and maintaining properties. As a second generation, family run business, we offer the same professional, high-quality service you would expect from national agents but with a local, personal touch”. To discuss any property matters, call Porters on 01656 766666 or email: bridgend@porters-uk.com

PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 9S

Porthcawl 60 v Valley Ravens 20; Porthcawl 50 v Kenfig Hill 5; Glynneath 5 v Porthcawl 25; Porthcawl 30 v Glynneath 15. As coaches, we are very pleased with the commitment in training and games, everyone gives 100% and everyone contributes regardless who is on the field. Now our job is to ensure they keep on developing and start to understand the different roles and positions on the field. “Cmon mini Seagulls!” Geraint Evans

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB Another chapter in the boys development this season where they began contact rugby. They had a good pre-season of conditioning themselves and learning the new techniques of tackling and controlling contact. By the time the first game came along, they were chomping at the bit. They took off where they left last season and our new players have been a great addition to our squad. The boys have really enjoyed contact so far and are expressing themselves every game. The results are a reflection of this: Amman Utd 5 v Porthcawl 55; Porthcawl 50 v Cwmavon 40;

Well, summer is now a distant memory, and we did have the odd nice day or 2 (I think!) The RNLI have now finished their safety cover of Coney and Trecco Beaches for the winter, so if you are using the beaches this winter, then take extra care and use common sense. The fading light and worsening weather has meant that beach training has also finished until the spring. So, the main focus is now on sharpening the skills and fitness levels at Pyle Pool on Friday nights. We have recently taken the decision to amalgamate all age groups into 1 time slot, and so everyone will now train from 8 till 9 o’clock. The great thing about this is that there will be no waiting around if you have a child in nippers and another in juniors. The parents, as always, are welcome to join in. We are always looking for new members, so if you have a child who is over 7 years old, or if you fancy joining in yourself and want further information, then please contact the secretary on secplgc@hotmail.com, or check out our website www.plgc.org.uk
