your views Dear Editor, The original row of flowerbeds now grassed over between Coney Beach and the harbour to be planted with palm trees and the adjoining broken paving slabs to be replaced. Many do not notice the beautiful flowers in the 25 hanging baskets in John Street because they have been sited too high up the lampposts and walls. They should be lowered by at least two feet so that people can appreciate them rather than looking at the bottom of the baskets. They must be sited not to cause an obstruction. No traffic should be allowed through John Street. The pathway joining the top of Hillsborough Place and Portway Surgery and car park should be properly paved and the area landscaped. The lane at the side of the Co-op joining Lias Road to Victoria Avenue should be re-surfaced. All corners adjoining road junctions should have double yellow lines for five metres so that motorists should have a clear view and avoid accidents. To open up the town, the original road connecting South Road to Station Hill, New Road should be re-opened with a mini roundabout on the dual carriageway. The ‘sleeping policemen’ on New Road should be kept but reduced in height. New Road is not suitable for buses at present and buses leave Porthcawl for Bridgend every fifteen minutes so with the returning buses would be travelling along New Road every eight minutes which would cause chaos especially with cars already parked on one side of the street creating single lane traffic. The Knights Arms should be demolished and re-built. The site might not be suitable for a block of flats as there are great parking problems in the area already. The ‘Bottle Bank’ should be re-painted in a light colour. The narrow seats in the shelter opposite the Seabank should be widened for comfort. The two seats opposite the Seabank should be turned around to face the sea. The dilapidated fencing around the boundary of Salt Lake should be removed and be replaced with a privet hedge and the area landscaped. The grass and weeds surrounding the base of the flowerbeds on the seafront and the grass and weeds along the edge of the harbour wall should be removed. The seats on the common should be repaired and placed on a concrete base. The seats on the seafront should be repainted in a very good paint. A very large paddling pool and a smaller one for the children to be sited at a convenient spot. When the Portway Surgery becomes vacant, it should be converted into a bus station and council offices, along with an information centre. This would result in no buses travelling through town other than the number 61 bus. There should be an evening bus service to take visitors to the Neath Port Talbot and Morriston hospitals. Perhaps one day, an enterprising boat owner will run short boat trips. The Glamorgan Holiday Home should be reopened as a care centre or a hotel or cinema also a very large room with a table tennis table, pool table, music and seats for teenagers to go in the evenings. Is it a case of the impossible being made possible? John Jenkins, Porthcawl Catherine Tanner BMus(Hons) ARCM

Sewing Alterations
EMYR’s KARAVAN4theKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE GET £40,00
0 TAR Dear Editor, Great news - we have already raised over £20,000 - thank you so much for all who have raised or donated recently - we are well on our way! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. It wasn’t there for Emyr and others, but we can change that now. Please run, walk, jump, dance - anything you can do again. A big shout out to all taking part and raising money for us at the Cardiff half marathon - good luck! Please visit our website to register or see upcoming events http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900 493697 We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Huw Owen, Paul Downes and Christian Evans

RIDICULOUS BINS

SURFERS’ FAREWELL PADDLE-OUT FOR MIKE LAWRENCE
Dear Editor, The family of Mike Lawrence would like to express their gratitude and thanks to everyone involved in his recent ‘farewell paddleout’. Mike was a very popular character in the surfing world. It was an amazing turnout of family and friends to pay their last respects. Mike sadly passed away in Sri Lanka earlier this year in March, just 45 years old. Mike Lawrence 1972 – 2017. Surfer, greatly missed by all. Thank you, Derek Lawrence

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM As you enter the Museum, on your left is a slab measuring about seven feet by three foot, containing five well-preserved footprints of either a gigantic bird, or early reptile. In 1853, Jenkin Henry, the owner of the Crown Brewery in Newton, once adjacent to the right of the Ancient Briton, found and placed a large flagstone outside his door. After many years, owing to alterations, the slab was thrown aside. Fortunately, instead of being broken up, it was used as a cover for a large cesspool in Newton village green. When placed in its new position the weather, and chemicals emitted from the cesspool, brought out the impressions contained in the stone. Colonel Picton Turbervill, of Ewenny Priory, financed its removal to Cardiff Museum and its analysis. Research has proven that the footprints are the only example of this species found in Britain. The only other place that such footprints have been found is in Connecticut and Massachusetts. They come from the Triassic period, 250 million years ago, when Europe was joined to North America. October is archaeology month at the Museum. Visitors will be able to view other local archaeological finds - some for the first time. Ceri Joseph
ROBESON REMEMBERED A tribute to the life of Paul Robeson and his relationship with Porthcawl will be held at the Grand Pavilion, Maesteg Town Hall and the Park and Dare Treorchy this autumn. ‘Robeson Remembered’ will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the historic transatlantic broadcast between the American singer, actor, athlete and civil rights activist, and the Miners’ Eisteddfod, which took place at the Grand Pavilion on 5 October 1957. Paul Leroy Robeson was an American bass singer and actor who became involved with the Civil Rights Movement. At Rutgers College, he was an outstanding American football player, and then had an international career in singing, with a distinctive, powerful, deep bass voice, as well as acting in theatre and movies. Hi career soon became international and it was during a stint 20 | seaside news
in London’s West End in a production of Showboat that Robeson first came across the South Wales Mining Community. Outside the theatre one evening, he came across a group of unemployed miners who had walked to London to draw attention to the hardship and suffering endured by thousands of miners and their families in South Wales. Their struggles resonated with him and there began the special relationship between Robeson and the Welsh mining community which was further reinforced by his 1939 film The Proud Valley. Every year between 1952 and 1957, Robeson was invited to sing at the Miners’ Eisteddfod in Porthcawl but he was unable to travel because his passport had been withdrawn by the US Government because of his outspoken left wing and anti-racist views. On 5th October 1957, Robeson was able to participate in the Miners’ Eisteddfod that was held at the Grand Pavilion, by means of a transatlantic telephone link to a secret recording studio in New York. The South Wales miners added their voice and signatures to the international petitions that eventually forced the US Supreme Court to reinstate his passport in 1958. To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the famous transatlantic broadcast Awen Cultural Trust and award-winning Bridgend Youth Theatre present a brand-new piece of theatre using film, dance and live music ‘Robeson Remembered’. It will also be supported by a Paul Robeson exhibition which is coordinated by Beverley Humphries BBC Radio Wales broadcaster, writer, singer and speaker. This exhibition chronicles Robeson’s struggle against prejudice and intolerance in a moving and inspirational way and you can see it at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl on Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 October in the Stage Door. The young people of Bridgend Youth Theatre working in partnership with director Roger Burnell, writer Louise Osborne and award winning composer John Rea will create their own original piece of theatre. They will also be working alongside theatre practitioners, male voice choirs and film-makers to produce this exciting piece of work that will reflect the bond that existed between Paul Robeson and the South Wales miners. They will tell the story of how Paul Robeson and the miners of South Wales believed that peace, unity and tolerance were pre-requisites of a just and progressive world. Such beliefs have resonances for today and they look to celebrate this message. This unique piece of theatre will tour to the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, Maesteg Town Hall and the Park and Dare, Treorchy thanks to the support this project has had from the Arts Council of Wales. Ceri Evans, Director of Business Development for Awen Cultural Trust said “I am so pleased that a new generation are learning about Paul Robeson, his incredible story, the values that he stood for and of course his special place in Grand Pavilion history”. Paul Robeson died on January 23rd in 1976, aged 77, his voice and his spirit will never be forgotten. “I keep laughing instead of crying. I must keep fighting until I’m dying And Ol’ Man River He just keeps rolling along” Picture: Morris 2007

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL It is with great excitement that I write my first article for the Seaside News in five years. I have just become the new Head Teacher of Porthcawl Primary School having been away for five years working as a head teacher in Cardiff. I was previously deputy and acting head teacher at the school; it is amazing to once again be welcomed back as part of the community. Porthcawl Primary School has continued to improve over the years and, as a green category school, is known for high standards in terms of academic performance and wellbeing. The school has recently won awards for a wide variety of curriculum areas. In addition, under the guidance of Mr Richards, we are also a lead school for Literacy and support several other schools throughout South Wales. I have been greatly impressed by the children’s excellent behaviour as well as their attitude to learning. It really is a huge pleasure to be back! If you would like to visit our wonderful school, please contact the office - we have some Nursery places still available. We are really proud of our school and enjoy showing people around. Jo Rowley Head Teacher
NEW HEAD FOR BRYNTEG
I would like to introduce myself as the new Head Teacher of Brynteg School. It is a privilege to be able to lead a school that has achieved so highly over the years and I certainly intend to build on this to ensure that Brynteg is even more successful in the future. This term has certainly started in an extremely positive way as we celebrate excellent results at Key Stage 3, 4 and the sixth form. Recent press coverage focussed on the many successes of our pupils as they collected their results this summer and there certainly was a lot to celebrate. The response to the change in uniform has been outstanding and it is a pleasure to see the positive impact that the introduction of blazers has had across the school - the pupils look fantastic! There are many events coming up in the next few weeks including : Year 11 Parents Evening and more. Further details of all our events can be found on our website (www.bryntegschool. co.uk), Facebook (Brynteg School) and Twitter (@bryntegschool) Ryan Davies Head Teacher

INVESTORS IN FAMILIES AWARD Pil Primary School are delighted to have recently been accredited with the ‘Investors in Families’ Award. The award involved collecting the evidence to prove that the school promotes a family friendly ethos, as well as showing how this partnership can be built upon over the next three years. During the morning the ‘Investors in Families’ Assessor, Mrs Sue Davies, examined a file of supporting evidence, which highlighted the work that we do. She then met with the School Council, members of the Eco Club and representatives of the Rights Respecting Schools Committee. During a tour of the school she was entertained by the School Choir and met with pupils and parents. At the end of her visit Mrs Davies was delighted to inform everybody that the school was indeed very worthy of the ‘Investors in Families’ Status. Pil Primary School is very proud of its collective commitment to work with families and the fact that everyone engages in a positive way with the different families of pupils at the school. A big thank you must go to the governors, parents, pupils, staff and friends of the school for their continued partnership and support. A special ‘thank you’ to Mrs Rees and Mrs Owen for coordinating the work and collating the evidence. N Pryce Head Teacher

poets corner REMINISCING
I remember times gone by when I was just a kid. Ten fags, eight pints, a curry and still change from a quid. And if you struck it lucky and by some chance you score, four Babychams, another meal, would cost you ten bob more. No need for late night buses, it cost only half a crown, to get a local taxi to anywhere in town. Two bob bought the luxury of upstairs in the pictures, a shilling for the orange drink and a bag of dolly mixtures. A hair cut cost two shillings, a pound bought top range jeans. It really was a doddle to live below your means. It’s okay reminiscing but it makes me feel quite sad that I used to scoff at tales like these spun by my Mum and Dad. Jim Kyle, North Cornelly
RECYLING QUESTIONS?
The thing I’m wondering about today, Is will my recycling be taken away. I know this may seem trivial to some, but rotting food and maggots are just no fun. I’ve tried to email and I’ve tried to call, but on deaf ears my problems fall. Changes were made and we have adhered, but these are problems no one feared. I sorted my rubbish into all the bags The food, the Plastics and last months mags, but now I have no room for more, and a weeks later its still by my door. How long do we wait whilst this going on, will the rubbish ever be gone? How high does the mountain of rubbish get, before the obligations are met? My temper is well and truly frayed, I’m wondering if my council tax should be paid? The council tell me I should contact Kier, but its the council I pay a fortune each year. So if your a councillor reading this, A collection of rubbish would be really bliss. The bubonic plague was a thing of the past, but if this keeps up it will be back fast!! JUNIOR BOI
Junior, Junior, all of us can see, You led such a happy life living with me. Never wearing a collar and staying off the lead You knew how to behave boi; yes you did indeed. Junior, Junior, everyone they knew, How special the bond was, between me and you; Not a day would pass without you around, And no other dog would be allowed on your ground. Junior, Junior, now you have gone, Over ‘Rainbow Bridge’ to the waiting thong; We all miss you and loved you very much, Why isn’t there visiting hours so we could keep in touch? Junior, Junior, now you are healthy young and free, Go play with your pals now and don’t worry about me; God played a hand in this, all of us can see, I’m so glad I met you boi, you’ve been the only one for me. Love From Mammy x RIP Junior. Carolyn Llewellyn, North Cornelly
SILENCE ISN’T ALWAYS GOLDEN Silence isn’t always golden, When things are tough, Because it’s not so nice, When things are going rough.
You need someone just to talk to, And to ask you how you feel, To others it may be trivial, But to you it’s a big deal. Even somebody just nodding towards you, With a reassuring glancing smile, It may just give you that comfort, To go on for another mile. You don’t necessarily want hours, Just a quick few minutes of their day, To help you put things back into perspective, Before you set back off on your way. When you see a friend or colleague feeling low, Just ask them if they’re alright, Because it may just be that minutes acknowledgement, Which will help them through tonight. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend
SITTING, SINKING, STINKING
Smut and smear, only thinking What was What is What might have been The night that’s been and Left me far, far, behind I eat Yet I stay hungry I drink But still I thirst I’m in the sun Yet feel no warmth In the arms of my family But I feel no comfort Hard as stone Cold as ice Far as fame Near as death I cry Yet feel no sorrow I scream But still am silent I’m in my prime Yet feel so weak From the top of my mountain I see the pit of my stomach Churning, swelling, breathing Night to morning, only blinking They’re coming It’s coming It’s always coming The night that’s been and Left me far, far, behind. Martyn Sayce, Porthcawl
SEASHORE MEMORIES
Stepping out along the shore, Young ones running on before. Gentle waves shine in the sun, No storm to spoil the children’s fun. Shipwreck jutting from sand, Worn smooth by the weather’s hand. First becomes a pirate boat, Then a castle with a moat. Next the sea shells we collect, Far too many I suspect. Razor shells and cockles too, Stones and shells of every hue. Now our trip is at an end, We only had an hour to spend. Where our cares seemed out of reach, Walking on Rhossili beach. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

local news DEVELOPMENTS IN PORTHCAWL
It is fantastic to see the Jennings Building brought back into use and last month I was very pleased to attend the official opening event. Jennings is a good example of a building that say fifty years ago would probably have been knocked down. It is therefore great to see that the building has been restored sympathetically, retaining the character of the building to provide a great place to live, work and socialise. It was interesting to see some of the ‘live-work’ units and to visit the businesses based there. It was a good sign that all three businesses were already busy. Also set for a major refurbishment are sea defences at Porthcawl’s town beach. Thanks to Welsh Government funding of more than £2million pounds, work can be carried out to improve the sea defences which will include the partial demolition of the existing structure and the replacement of the existing asphalt with a new terraced structure which will be surfaced in a sand colour in line with the responses from the public consultation. Once the work is completed, the strengthened defences will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion from the sea to 260 properties. Carwyn Jones AM for Bridgend
HOW CAN WE IMPROVE ON THE FESTIVE LIGHTING IN PORTHCAWL? Porthcawl Town Council is hosting a public meeting in the YMCA, John Street, Porthcawl on Saturday 14th October 2017 at 10.00am-12.00 noon to discuss what additions could be made to the Christmas lighting for the town in 2018. Following requests by local residents Porthcawl Town Council are extremely keen to engage with the community and to listen to the members of the public on how the Christmas lighting could perhaps be improved upon in the future. To that end we are arranging a meeting to discuss this issue and to bring some innovative ideas to fruition for the Christmas lighting and of course for forthcoming years. This is a great opportunity for the community to be involved and play an important role in assisting the Town Council with the decision making process for Festive lighting for Porthcawl. So if you can attend the public meeting, please feel free to come along and have your say. Or alternatively you can email your ideas prior to the meeting to:- Sarah Watkins, Assistant Town Clerk on sarah.watkins@bridgend.gov.uk or post to the following address: Porthcawl Town Council, 24 Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl CF36 3HG. 30 | seaside news
BUSINESS RATES RELIEF SCHEME - GIVE YOUR VIEWS I urge all shopkeepers and business owners within Porthcawl and the whole of BCBC to take part in a consultation being undertaken by Welsh Government on their plans to provide business rates relief. The recent business rates revaluation carried out in Wales has caused immense problems for many traders in certain parts of Wales – including Porthcawl. In some cases, small traders were being asked to pay disproportionate increases in their business rates, which in some cases threatened their very existence. Welsh Conservatives have long campaigned for a proper rates relief scheme to be introduced and I am pleased that at last, Welsh Government is asking businesspeople what their views are. Small shops are the backbone of our high streets and the decline of town centres in recent years has made things tough for many of them. Anything which helps them to survive is to be welcomed as it is crucial that our high streets remain viable and vibrant because they fulfil a valuable social and community function as well as proving a retail experience. The proposed scheme would see rates relief directed away from national chains and given to small, locally owned businesses – a move that I support. To take part, email your views to LGF1consultations@gov. wales or post to Local Taxation branch, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NQ SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com
SEASIDE NEWS – EU (WITHDRAWAL) BILL We have discovered that the EU (Withdrawal) Bill will only receive eight days of debate for the next stage of its legislative journey. Some MPs are concerned that such complex legislation, which has so many far-reaching implications, will be given relatively little time to be discussed. The Maastricht Treaty, officially known as the Treaty of the European Union, which established the EU, was given forty-one days of Parliamentary time. The Withdrawal Bill will influence virtually every aspect of our daily lives as we exit the EU so there are calls for it to be given more time to be debated. There are concerns that Ministers will be able to use delegated powers to change and remove EU derived law without full Parliamentary scrutiny. This would undermine Parliamentary sovereignty and circumvent the full democratic legislative process. The Bill currently has no safeguards to protect our cherished rights and standards. Devolved administrations would not be able to modify retained EU law in areas that fall under devolved competencies. This isn’t about if we leave or not, it’s about how we leave. We need absolute accountability and transparency during this process. Brexit shouldn’t mean an erosion of rights or side-lining Parliament. VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR HOME ENERGY PROJECT A special home energy trial is taking place this winter, and Bridgend County Borough Council is looking for local people to volunteer and be a part of it. Thirty homes are needed to participate with the trial, which would involve householders using their mobile phones or tablets to test the latest in smart heating controls. The home energy trial is designed to help experts refine new and emerging technologies that they hope will make systems used to heat homes as efficient as possible, all while reducing carbon emissions. Similar trials are also taking place in Newcastle and Manchester, so you can find out more and register an interest by visiting https://recruit.gateway.energy/ A recent meeting held at the Porthcawl SUSSED offices gave further insight into some of the other energy initiatives that are being developed in the county borough. These include a truly innovative project that could see underground water pumped out of old mines, converted into steam and used as a cheap source of heating for the home. The council is also looking into establishing a cost-effective low carbon heat network, and is undertaking a study to identify further opportunities for community energy projects in rural parts of the county borough. DON’T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN THE ELECTORAL REGISTER The 2017 electoral canvass is now in its last phase and so far, more than 44,000 people have signed up. With the final canvass deadline for the next register update set to expire on 20 November, canvassers wearing photo-identity cards and carrying official documentation are calling on people who have not yet registered to encourage them to do so. As well as enabling voters to have their say at elections, being on the electoral register helps avoid problems with obtaining credit or applying for things like mobile phone contracts, mortgages, passports and more. Registration is free, quick and easy. Forms featuring a unique identity code have already been sent to all households, and you can use the code to return it to the council, register online, send a SMS message or call a dedicated freephone number – check the forms for full details. The most popular option is online registration, and 400 people a day have been using this method. But there are still several thousand households that have not yet signed up, so canvassers will be helping ensure that people don’t miss their chance to have their say. You can find out more by visiting the electoral pages at www.bridgend.gov.uk
WORK BEGINS ON £3M NEW COASTAL DEFENCES AT THE ‘TARMAC BEACH’
For more than 30 years, Porthcawl’s ‘tarmac beach’ has done a fantastic job keeping more than 260 seafront properties, including the historic Grand Pavilion, safe from flooding and coastal erosion. Now the beach is going to gain a fresh new look as work gets underway on a £3m refurbishment of its ageing sea defences. Expected to take up to a year to complete, the project will transform the beach with an eye-catching new terraced design and sand-coloured surfacing that will help keep the seafront area safe for decades to come. Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience while the work is underway, and the project will also deliver additional benefits such as new jobs, training opportunities and support for local businesses. The work was prioritised after a recent inspection discovered that the current defences have reached the end of their natural life, and need to be replaced. The project represents another multi-million pound investment into the Porthcawl area, and has been largely funded by Welsh Government along with £700,000 from the local council. The new sea defences will establish an all-new local landmark that the town can be proud of, and more details will be revealed very soon. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL From the ‘Old Pilot Lookout’ on the promenade, we operate an all year round day time watch, reporting to HM Coastguard at Milford Haven, allowing us to Spot, Plot, Report and Respond to incidents along the coastline at Porthcawl. The 40 strong team at Porthcawl NCI is part of a national charity, with over 50 stations around the coast of the UK. It is run by 2000 volunteers and is totally self-funded. We’ve dealt with 25 incidents so far this year, from stranded dogs to a full Mayday emergency, working closely with local Coastguard teams and Porthcawl RNLI. We log and monitor all maritime traffic within our area. So far in 2017 we have logged 3,535 vessel movements - 66% related to leisure activities. In August, Buckingham Palace informed NCI that “The Princess Royal will be delighted to accept Royal Patronage of the National Coastwatch Institution”. This is tremendous news for the Charity and is a great recognition of the contributions and achievements that NCI makes in ensuring safety around the UK coastline. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Does your church still hold a Harvest Thanksgiving Service? Do you remember the harvest services of years gone by? There would be a table at the front of the church, and everyone, the children first would fill the table with fruit, veg, and other harvest gifts. If you were living the valleys, the harvest table always included a lump of coal to remember the miners who put the food on their families tables. Some churches would have a bread ‘wheatsheaf’ in the display and after the service share it together with a cup of tea. The harvest gifts themselves were often used to feed the poor and needy, a tradition going right back to Old Testament times. In present day churches the gifts are may be donated to the local Foodbank, or a special collection is taken for a charitable need. People generally seem to have forgotten to celebrate harvest, we take our food for granted. We have become so removed from the actual production of our food that we have forgotten how to be thankful. The bible says before He fed the 5000, Jesus gave thanks for the loaves and fish. Perhaps we should be more thankful too! Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

GOINGS ON AT NOTTAGE CHAPEL Nottage Chapel has been very busy of late. At the end of July, we welcomed nine visitors from the Czech Republic. They were all very taken by our lovely village, even if the fish & chip supper bemused them. We have now begun weekly coffee mornings at 11am in the Old School Room, where you will be warmly welcomed to meet friends both old and new whilst enjoying a warming cuppa. Sunday 24th August at 11am sees us hold our Harvest Festival Service. As usual we will collect non-perishable foodstuffs for the Porthcawl Foodbank. After the service we shall enjoy a bring and share lunch. We would be very glad to welcome you to the service. The congregation is also in the early stages of establishing an exciting youth initiative. Everything should become clear soon, so I will keep you updated. Lastly, I am aware that many people in Nottage us as being ‘their chapel’. If that’s true of you; perhaps you came to Sunday School, or were Christened or Married here, we would be delighted to welcome you back to the fold. God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel
AN AUTUMN COMET A recently discovered comet will be visible in binoculars during October and November. The comet was discovered in July by astronomers in Chile and is known as Comet ASAS-SN1 (C/2017 O1). When discovered it was very faint at 15th magnitude, but as it has neared the Sun it has brightened and is now at its greatest brightness of about magnitude 7.5. It will be visible in the constellation of Perseus for some time to come. Perseus rises in the east and during October the comet will be wellplaced in the evening sky around midnight, and then becoming visible earlier in the evening. The comet always remains beyond the orbit of Mars, and will not get close to us. It has an orbital period of around 3600 years, and won’t be back in the vicinity of the Sun until the 57th century! Although stars of magnitude 7 or 8 are easily visible in binoculars, a comet of this brightness is usually less easy to see as its brightness is spread out over a wider area and is not a point source. So fairly dark skies will be needed for the best views. Clive Down FRAS (Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society)

ROTARY’S FULL HOUSE
Rotary in Porthcawl recently hosted a magical afternoon for forty residents of local care homes – now an annual event. Thanks to Bridgend Community Transport, the residents travelled to All Saints Church from their homes at Picton Court, Monkstone House and Pinehurst and were entertained by Porthcawl Rotarians who laid on a delightful cream tea and sandwiches spread. Many of the residents were well known to the Rotarians, who conduct regular monthly Sunday evening services and mid-week ‘Bingo and Sing-alongs’ at their care homes and it was lovely to see them enjoying an away-from-home afternoon out in Porthcawl. Before the tea, they played several games of prize Bingo and enjoyed another sing-along, singing familiar old war-time songs but most of all the special guests enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the fun and the fellowship. Towards the end of the afternoon, many of them said how much they had enjoyed it and thanked the Rotarians individually … the feeling was mutual because the Rotarians themselves had had a wonderful afternoon – just to see the beaming smiles all round was magic! PORTHCAWL CARNIVAL & EVENTS Two meetings have been held involving Porthcawl groups and clubs regarding events in Porthcawl for 2018. Visit Wales has a theme of ‘Life by the Sea’ and we are encouraging event organisers to consider their events in line with this theme. In addition we have considered further events in promoting Porthcawl to a wider audience. To achieve this aim we have considered how events are promoted within Porthcawl and to the wider audience. Some tremendous ideas were suggested and will be examined further, particularly about the calendar of events. Additionally, many event organisers are hiring in equipment and paying individual public liability insurance. We are considering approaching these issues from a unified position. We are currently collating informed ration on what equipment groups have and would be prepared to lend, and information on Public Liability for their event. We have been encouraged by the response to date. Not all event managers maybe aware of what we are trying to develop, so please engage with us on this project. For further information on these developments please visit Porthcawl Carnival Facebook page or email Kerry Marlow on marlowk@sky.com.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE
We are sending kits of tools to Zambia this month, comprising carpentry, building, shoe repair and automotive kits, a total of 135 tools. If you can help we are in desperate need of engineering and carpentry bench vices, sash cramp ends, ‘G’ clamps and wooden mallets.. We helped the museum celebrate their Victorian Day by setting up a Victorian workshop with tools of the period and items where the public could ‘have a go’. There was a challenge to knock a nail into a block of wood but only two girls of about 10 years old managed it. We also had a drilling machine where people could crank a handle to drill a hole through a piece of wood. John Hanson was demonstrating how to sharpen a cross cut saw and David Cook demonstrated how a draw knife is used. The Victorian workers did get time for a well earned tea break. (Photo’s and tea care of the museum.) I would like to thank the many people and organisations who have donated money, time and tools as we could not exist without them. If anyone has tools that can be donated please give John a ring on 01656 786367.

legal advice DIVORCE FOR THE OVER 50’S Separating from your partner is daunting at any age, but arguably worse if you have been with your other half for a long time. While the procedure for divorce is the same irrespective of the length of the marriage, the settlement of financial matters will differ if there has been a long union. If one spouse has given up work to look after the children, it may be the case that the nonworking spouse should apply for maintenance. Maintenance orders normally last for a fixed term, allowing the non-working party time to retrain or to find work, or until that person attains pensionable age. At this point, the maintenance will cease and the alternate source of income will take its place. Pension assets are more relevant to older divorcing couples. The courts will deal with pensions in three ways. A pension sharing order happens when a sum from one party’s pension fund is paid into the other party’s fund. Pension attachment orders occur where the party holding the pension directs the pension company to pay a sum to the other party each month. Alternatively, if there are enough assets, the court will offset the value of the pension against other assets, the equity in the home for example. If you find yourself in this position there are some things that you can do to protect yourself. If your home is owned in your spouse’s sole name, you must register a notice at the Land Registry to protect your interest. If the home is in your joint names you should sever the tenancy and make a Will, thereby ring fencing your half share of the home until the final financial settlement is made. Taking positive steps at the outset will allow for a better outcome. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

DIVORCE If you decide to separate or divorce your spouse there are a number of issues you need to consider. If you are the main or only earner in a marriage, you may need to continue providing financial support to your spouse before reaching any final agreement. Conversely, if you are financially dependent on your spouse, ask for suitable arrangements to be made. If your spouse refuses, you can apply to the court for an interim financial order. If you are concerned that your spouse will abuse them, you could close joint bank and credit card accounts. If your spouse is the sole owner of the family home, you can register your home rights to prevent the home being sold without your agreement. When considering the financial settlement, the first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children, more specifically, children under 16 and older children who are in full-time education or have a learning disability. In addition, the parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support. You can negotiate an agreement on child maintenance between yourselves or involve the Child Support Agency “CSA”. The other key factors to be taken into account include: • Each spouse’s income and other financial resources. Actual income, rather than prospects. Any pension entitlements are also taken into account. • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The longer the marriage, the more likely it is that the less wealthy spouse will be entitled to a substantial share of the assets and/or continuing maintenance. • The contribution each spouse has made. Importantly, looking after the house and children can be as valuable a contribution as that of the partner who earned the income. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions. Once you have reached agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair. It also limits the ability of either spouse to ask the court to change financial arrangements, and makes it easier to take action if your former spouse fails to honour his or her commitments. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order.

Tuesday the 12th of September and we were once again in the Talbot Centre for our monthly meeting. Where has this year gone! We had a good turnout of members, our president and treasurer were on holiday but Enid our secretary and Christine our vice president were in attendance. W.I. business discussed, plans for the remainder of the year including our Christmas party to be held in house as last year was enjoyed by all especially Enid’s version of pass the parcel. Our Link Meeting for next year is reaching its final stages of planning. Business concluded, our speaker was a Mr. David Alexander - his topic was King Mongkut and a Difficult Woman from Rhyl. And what a difficult woman she was! We were enthralled by his story. Tea and biscuits helped the afternoon go with much talk and laughter. Our speaker for next month is Mike Chubb - his topic Bridgend Arsenal. Several of our members have family members who worked in the Arsenal including myself (my mother during the 2nd World War), so we are all looking forward to his talk. Why not join us, we have several new members this year and you can always pop in for a visit without committing yourself to us. Christine Callaghan
We have had an interesting few months, beginning with a talk from Police Officer Leighton Rees on Crime Prevention. In August, some of our members spent a pleasurable day with Murton WI on Artisan Bread Making. Also in August, we held our August Cream Tea, only it became ‘The Pudding Club’ with a wonderful display of various delicious puddings, tartlets etc. Many members of the local WI’s supported us to make it an enjoyable afternoon – may I take this opportunity to thank them. In October, we look forward to a return visit of Rosa Ceramics – I still cherish the Ceramic Christmas Tree I bought off her last Christmas. In November, we hope to have a Christmas theme to entertain us on a dull Thursday afternoon. May I take this opportunity to mention we have just started the Craft Group Afternoon – first Thursday of the month, 2pm in the Kitchen Annex of All Saints Church Hall and hope it will be a success. As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124

Well into autumn now and dare I mention it, Christmas is coming! We are holding an Autumn Fayre on October 27th, 10.30am at Trinity Church Hall, and it will be a chance to start your Christmas shopping early! The money raised will go to the Pagets Association. Pagets is a bone disease fairly common in the UK particularly in older people but which I must admit I had never heard of. So please do come along and support this worthwhile cause. In August we held an afternoon cream tea. This was catered for us as last year by Jane Morgan of ‘A Matter of Taste’. We welcomed guests from Cardiff Federation and Bridgend Guild and all enjoyed a good tea and a chat. Our meeting this month is on October 11th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when the speaker will be Pat Johnson. We will be asking “What is she doing in the shed?” If that intrigues you come and find out! All welcome. Dorothy Thomas 772157
The September meeting was our ‘Harvest Festival’ celebration evening. We all enjoyed a delicious fish and chips supper. The tables were beautifully decorated with Autumnal, Floral and Vegetable displays, cleverly created by our President. We were also delighted to celebrate two very important birthdays: Janet Mosely and Marilyn Prior, with a lovely cake. The evening ended with a quiz and a singsong. We were sorry to announce that Sheila Gammon, one of our long-standing members has recently passed away. Sheila was a lovely lady and will be sadly missed. Plans are progressing for our Christmas trip to Abby-CwmHir, which we are very much looking forward to. For any further information ring: Jennifer on 784715. M Freeman
SOROPTOMISTS BRIDGEND Soroptimists from all over the UK are working to establish the public’s knowledge of Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery. From 1st to 7th October 2017 Soroptimists from SI Bridgend and District as part of their mission to inspire action and transform the lives of women and girls worldwide are encouraging members of the public to complete the UK wide survey undertaken by the Soroptimist United Kingdom Programme Action Committee. Working with UK Modern Slavery Training Delivery Group, which is part of the Government’s strategy to combat trafficking/slavery, the intention is to find out the extent of public knowledge of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery. The results will help to inform and direct their work. The on-line version of the survey is accessed from www.sigbi. org/survey/ and it is hoped that a wide range of individuals will give a few minutes of their time to log in and complete the survey. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL The first meeting of our year on the 5th of September was interesting as usual. We thanked Elizabeth Jones for hosting our August garden party, indoors -because the Welsh weather lived up to its reputation. Our members and friends generously provided the delicious food. We have a few projects to undertake. Knitting squares for blankets and twiddle muffs to help people with dementia or brain damage. Some of us will be making small very simple dresses for orphans. And there are many other crafts and charities to get involved in. Can we congratulate all the family member of our IW group that has attained such excellent results in their exams this year. Good luck in all your future endeavors. Our next meeting is at the Grove Golf Club on the 3rd of October and we welcome newcomers. Our aims are to form friendships, arrange outings and support local and international charities. Can we offer our condolences to our very good friend and secretary Sheila Burge on the passing of her husband. Suzanne Jefferies Club Correspondent

business & finance It seems an eternity since the Bank of England changed interest rates, in fact it was as long ago as 2009. However all the noises coming out of the Bank seem to indicate that a rate rise could be in the offing in the next few months. Whilst that could put pressure on those with fairly substantial mortgages, it could come as a welcome move for domestic savers as well as international investors, who put huge amounts of money into the UK in the form of industrial and other investment. There was always going to be this problem with people having got used to historically low rates for so long and having built their budgets around this. However, the levels of debt in the country continue to rise and no one would want to go into another deep recession and a see lending reined in, especially where mortgage funding is concerned. If YOU have a mortgage that is due for review or coming to the end of a deal, NOW is the time to act whilst good deals are still there to be had. Give us a call on 782545. Now, there is a change to note going forward. Following this issue, we will operate under the name of Dragon Financial Services, however with the same contact details, staff and usual first-class service. This move will enhance what we are able to do for Clients and help us to provide an even better proposition, with a wider range of solutions for people’s needs in the future. We feel this is important as Client expectations become greater and we wish to ensure that financial assistance and advice is strengthened and delivered to the highest possible level. Whilst the needs of young people will always be dealt with sympathetically in the usual way, as they try to get on the financial ladder, the services to the Later Life sector of the market will increase going forward. With people living longer and needing their finances to be strong to take account of longevity, we shall be working with industry expert partners to deliver what is required. FINAL SALARY PENSION TRANSFERS Markets have driven the transfer values of final salary pensions to an all-time high and many more people are now moving their schemes to their own ‘pension pots’. It might suit some but not everyone as in doing so you give up a guaranteed pension for a pile of cash that is now in your control but with no guarantee. A pension of £15,000 pa might have a transfer value of £400,000 but will this money produce the same pension? Probably not, so why do people transfer? One of the main reasons for transfer is ‘control’, take Tata Steel and the British Steel Pension Scheme, most people have been transferring out because of potential solvency issues so taking control means they can decide when to retire and not have to wait until 65. There are however many other practical reasons for transfer if you consider the benefits, for example on death the whole fund would transfer to your spouse instead of reducing to maybe a 50% pension as with an employer’s scheme or you can nominate children or grandchildren to receive funds tax efficiently when usually the pension dies with you. 40 | seaside news
Dependent on your tax position the flexible ‘Drawdown’ pension can be taken as and when needed after age 55 to fit in with other incomes/pensions so it can be very tax effective if used correctly. Pension freedom rules have allowed people to access not only the 25% tax free cash from their fund but now 100% of the fund which is why you need to consult a specialist not just for the transfer but for peace of mind on how the money should be invested in retirement. gardening advice CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
The flower for the month October is the marigold, the marigold symbolizes sympathy and sorrow, I think that is right, sorrow the summer is over and sympathy for us gardeners because now the big clear-up starts! A red and golden month. One good thing is established lawns can be mown less frequently now as growth slows down, you should also raise the mower blades, grass which is cut too short over winter will not stand up to the poorer weather conditions, it will be more likely to become infested with moss and weeds because it is weaker. (You wouldn’t want to that for your poor lawn!) Divide older clumps of perennials now (these are easily spotted as you get new growth on the outside of the clump whilst the middle is bare) Next year they will reward you with double the flowers. Remember if the soil is so wet that it sticks to your boots –stay off it! We have a Halloween party for your little monsters on October 29th in the Green Hall, 6-8pm all are welcome. (Big monsters too) Did you know the world’s biggest pumpkin, from Belgium, weighed 2,624 pounds (bet that was hard to carve!) Chris Early

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
On September 2nd our Club held its 47th Annual Horticultural Show. Despite this summer not giving us the best growing conditions, our members came up trumps with a wonderful display of veg, flowers, crafts, preserves and baking items making it a very successful event on a beautiful sunny day. As autumn is upon us now with colder mornings and evenings our thoughts turn to preparing the garden for winter. Now is the time to split rhubarb crowns, cut back perennials that have finished flowering and divide to make more stock. Move tender plants to your greenhouse or conservatory and on good weather days it may be your last chance to mow lawns and cut hedges. We look forward to enjoying the glorious autumn colours, to cosy nights by the fire and the children get ready to enjoy Halloween! health & wellbeing CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTACT LENSES With advanced materials that allow more oxygen to the cornea, contact lenses are now more comfortable than ever. Specsavers stores in Bridgend and Porthcawl have a huge range to choose from. Bridgend store director, Stuart Buckmaster, says: “Our opticians will advise you on which ones are right for you and show you how to take care of them. Many people are nervous about putting lenses in for the first time but it is fairly easy with a bit of practice. If you’re having any problems, or if there is something you’re not sure about, you can always pop back into the store and we’ll be happy to help.” Specsavers will give you a pair of monthly lenses or five pairs of daily disposables to try for free. Which contacts are right for you? Daily disposable – For one day use - ideal for allergy sufferers due to fresh lens surface Monthly disposables – These are worn daily for up to a month Continuous wear – These can be worn overnight Multifocal – Perfect for anyone who needs different prescriptions for distance and reading. Mr Buckmaster continues: “Contact lenses can also be suitable for children, provided the optician feels they are mature enough to look after them properly. They can be a great advantage for kids, especially for activities like football, gymnastics or dancing.” To book a test, call Specsavers in Porthcawl on 01656 782832 or Bridgend on 01656 649 127, or visit: www.specsavers.co.uk
SOUND THERAPY…WHAT’S THAT? By playing various instruments, such as Himalayan/Crystal Bowls, Drums, Gongs, Voice & Percussion, a vibrational field is created which supports the potential for the self-healing of the body/mind. The vibrational field gently bathes the entire body, down to a cellular level, calming all internal systems & bringing the body/mind into balance. Through vibration the minds’ frequency changes & an ASC (altered state of consciousness) is induced, this simply means moving from a BETA to an ALPHA/ THETA frequency. Alpha/Theta frequencies are states of profound relaxation, we enter into them naturally, for example when we awaken or falling to or from sleep; when we daydream; when we are walking/driving from A to B and we don’t remember part of the journey, all Alpha/Theta frequency moments. spontaneously created, perhaps to compensate for an overstimulated daily life, leading to stress and illness. Research has shown that regular time spent in ASC through sound baths/therapy reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, eases muscular tension and brings emotional/mental well-being, all indications of supported selfhealing. BENEFITS OF FASTING
EIGHTFOLD NOBLE PATH
Can the benefits of fasting really be so broad? Yes, they can, and they are. We are so much more than a physical body and fasting affects every part of our being. When we cease the overindulgence that has become so common in our modern world, even for a short while, our lives and our priorities become clearer. Do these ‘short while’s’ occasionally, and you have a tool that will greatly add to your life. Fasting will: - rest the digestive system - allow for cleansing and detoxification of the body - create a break in eating patterns, while shining a spotlight on them - promote greater mental clarity - cleanse and heal “stuck” emotional patterns - lead to a feeling of physical lightness, increasing energy level. - promote an inner stillness, enhancing spiritual connection. - Fasting has been called the ‘miracle cure’ because the list of physical conditions improved by fasting is long and varied. Cited most often are allergies, arthritis, digestive disorders of all kinds, skin conditions, cardiovascular disease, and asthma. Osteopathy Holistic Beauty Taken from www.allaboutfasting.com Bookings: 07850 405 717 by Glyn Hardwicke
Over the last six months, I have described in this column aspects of the Eightfold Noble Path - to live our life skilfully without stress and mind made agitation, we can follow our minds formula of Right View, Intention, Action, Speech, Livelihood, Effort, Mindfulness and Concentration. Of course a lot of restraint is needed and kind discipline, but it can be done. A lifetime of meditation is the support that can bring this all into action. So my opening to you, is an invitation to a meditation day. A day led by a Buddhist Monk, and materials on hand to support you on aspects of the teachings. A day of relaxation, stopping and noticing that which binds us to stress. All welcome. Please email me on evansneville@aol.com (No charge, no pressure, no door to door sales and no conversion) Just an experience, a nice day out. Neville Evans

arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I am very pleased that so many people, residents and visitors alike, have had a chance to go into Porthcawl Museum in John Street and watch my film ‘Dangerous Coast’, which has formed part of the Museum’s superb S.S. Samtampa and Mumbles Lifeboat disaster exhibition since 1st April. The film was made and released twenty years ago for the 50th anniversary of the tragedy that occurred at Sker Point in April 1947, and I am delighted that its re-release for the 70th anniversary has created so much interest. Now, a new exhibition has taken its place in the Museum, and I am equally pleased that my 1995 film, ‘A History of Porthcawl, Newton and Nottage’, is likewise being screened on continuous display in support of this. Made with the collaboration of the late Gwyn Petty, I was able to capture scenes that were familiar in the town which have themselves become history in the intervening years. This production, together with ‘Porthcawl Past & Present’, made in 1996, were able to show the major features of the town’s fascinating history in documentary form, shot in their entirety on 16mm film. BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR Tabernacle Welsh Congregational Church, Derwen Street, Bridgend on Friday, 6th October is the date Bridgend Male Choir’s Annual Concert. Last year’s Concert was newly-appointed MD, Ryan Wood’s first ‘annual’ and what a concert it was with the packed audience showing its warm appreciation of a varied programme that extended from arrangements of traditional Welsh airs and hymns to Gounod and Verdi. This year’s Concert will be no different with the Choir delivering an inspirational programme to an expected full house. It will be good value as the Compere for the evening will be the well renown Beverley Humphreys, who has a portfolio career as broadcaster, writer, singer, and speaker – both entertaining and inspirational, along with guest soprano Charlotte Vaughan who is currently starring in ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in the West End. Tickets (£8.00) are available from Porter Estate Agents, Nolton Street, Bridgend, or from the Choir Secretary, Gareth Reese (07773 170373) - it should be noted that there will be no tickets available on the night. On the 24th October, the Choir embarks on its annual tour, this time to Palma where it will undertake three concerts at Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa and the world famous Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma in support of various charities. A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING EVENING IN PORTHCAWL Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl, (Porthcawl Welsh Learners’ Choir) together with Cantorion Coety performed in a recent concert at Gilgal Baptist Church to raise funds for the charity, Tearfund. At the time of writing, the total amount raised is £1,500 thanks to the generosity of the appreciative audience and earlier contributions. During the interval, there was a presentation by Josie Smith from Tearfund, who had travelled from London, to give an update on the recent aid activities by the charity in East Africa. As a result further large donations were given at the end of the evening. Both choirs performed individually and also joined together as one choir for three songs. Musical Director of the Porthcawl Learners’ Choir is Anne Brown, whilst Eira Paskin is Musical Director of Cantorion Coety. They should both be congratulated on the success of the evening. The audience gave warm, deserved applause to guest performers, Tomi Turner, tenor and harpist and to the Côr Dysgwyr Handbell Ringers. Everyone participating in the concert would like to thank all who supported them, especially Gilgal Baptist Church, and for the generous donations by the audience on the night.
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Some good things have come out of North Cornelly over the years. They have a fine running club (The Striders), and who remembers the fabulous Ponderosa Club, now sadly knocked down? The village has also produced some great talent including the brilliant awardwinning ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Owen Teale, and top musicians too, but I’m far too modest to mention me! However, one of the most successful is Jay Aston, whose band ‘Gene Loves Jezebel’, found fame in the USA through the 80s and played to huge crowds and appeared on numerous TV stations. The good news, after a 14-year wait since their last release, is that they have a new album out called Dance Underwater. I’ve had a listen and it’s a cracker! It’s got a gothic/80s feel to it and the best songs are Charmed Life (Never Give In), How Do You Say Goodbye (To Someone You Love) and the single Summertime. Give it a listen now! Jay, who is London-based, told me he’s got some gigs in New York then he’s hoping to pop to Wales before Christmas, so I’ll keep you tuned in. Belated thanks to everyone for a great Newton Festival! ART IN FOCUS This month the focus is on a beautiful painting: ‘Woman and a Child in a Garden at Bougival’, 1882 by the often forgotten Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot (18411895). Why forgotten? Because for over a century she has been overlooked and undervalued because of her gender and the subject matter she painted. As a woman Morisot could not occupy the spaces her male artist friends, Manet, Monet, and Renoir could. Instead she developed her own parallel subject matter from the world she was confined to: flowers, children, courtyards, gardens and parks. This was the realm of well-heeled domesticity. However, Morisot’s apparently ‘trivial’ subjects have blinded critics to the revolutionary way in which she broke up line and form, reassembling them in ways that are more true to the way our eyes interpret light and colour, and remaining closer to the aims of Impressionism than her male counterparts did. Not only that, but her domestic subjects are infused with a depth of feeling and subtle ambivalence that makes you want to linger for longer than intended. All this can be seen at work in this stunning example at The National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. For more information: josephinelewington@yahoo.co.uk Josephine Lewington MA.

‘WELSH GIRL’ REACHES FINAL OF UK ART COMPETITION ‘Swansea Fran’, an oil painting by up and coming artist Philip Vaughan has beaten thousands of entries to make the final of the National Open Art Competition (NOA). With £60,000 of prize money at stake including a top prize of £8,000, nearly 5,000 entries were submitted to the competition this year: “The standard is incredibly high just look at the online gallery so I’m delighted to get this far” he said. The finalists will be exhibited this November on the South Bank, London before the winners are announced later in the month. To support art in Wales, in 2015 he funded and launched “Art Challenge Wales” in his home town of Porthcawl, which has seen hundreds of artists competing outdoors “I hadn’t focused on painting to any great extent before but the art produced by the competing artists inspired me to develop my own work”. “Painting is much harder than going to the office for sure, but then you get out what you put in” he said. Philip Vaughan’s work is currently on show at the Kooywood Gallery, Cardiff and The Late November Gallery, Haverfordwest. seaside news | 47

sport reports PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8S GO CENTRE THANK YOU PAT! STAGE AT THE LIBERTY!
On Saturday September 9th, players, coaches and parents of Porthcawl Town Athletic, members of the Port Talbot and District League Committee, members of the PAA, and Pat’s family gathered at the PAA Club House on Lock’s Lane to throw a surprise party for Mrs Pat Farrow, the outgoing Secretary of the Club. Pat had been Secretary at the Club for over 23 years as well as a Club Football Coach and on the PAA Committee. She has worked tirelessly to provide an environment of fair play and opportunity for all the children who wanted to give football ‘a go’! Lots of these children who started in the Minis, progressed to the Juniors, Youth and eventually Seniors. Some even pursued a career in Sport. The Mayor of Porthcawl, Lorrie Desmond-Williams presented Mrs Farrow with a plaque for the Club House wall, which will remind us all of the legend that is Pat Farrow!
MAGIC MILESTONE FOR TAXI MIKE
It has been a very busy summer and pre-season for all of the Porthcawl RFC Minis’ and Junior section. Our U8s team was invited by the Ospreys to their pre-season game against Bath and had the big responsibility of making a guard of honour when all the players ran out onto the pitch. The highlight of the day was having the opportunity to play a game of tag rugby against the Gorseinon U8s team at half time in front of a big crowd. The team put on a great performance and were a credit to both the Ospreys and Porthcawl RFC. Our final pre-season games saw Llanharan RFC U8s team visiting us at South Road and then playing Mumbles RFC U8s away, a big challenge considering the Mumbles U8s team are coached by Ryan Jones and James Hook! We came away with our heads held high with another fantastic performance. We continue to develop as a team and are looking forward to a busy autumn of fixtures having a great deal of fun along the way! Porthcawl Runner Mike Davies was a proud man after completing his 200th Parkrun recently. It’s quite an achievement for the 59-year-old painter and decorator, who only took up running a little over four years ago. The Parkrun in Porthcawl was a little over two months old when Davies ran in his first one back on June 15, 2013, while the magic 200th came on August 19th this year with many of the club’s members also turning out to support him. Affectionally known as ‘Taxi Mike’ because of his second job as a cab driver, he has no plans to stop pounding the pavements any time soon either. And, as he heads towards another magic milestone in turning 60, it looks like there’s plenty of petrol left in Taxi Mike’s tank. The club were also delighted with an overall fourth-place finish out of seven in the Bridgend County Running League. Under the guidance of captain Rob Bennett, it’s a marked improvement on fifth last year with some outstanding performances throughout the six events. Gabriella Booth made it on to the podium after finishing as third female overall. And congratulations to Will Edwards and Lindsey Kale for passing their coaching exams. Carl Field
