your views Dear Editor, Parents of children at Nottage Primary School learned recently from the Bridgend County Borough Council Road Safety team that “there will be no school crossing patrol for the foreseeable future.” I’m writing to ask readers if they would take a moment to sign a petition that asks to re-instate the lollipop lady. The petition is here: http://bit.ly/2tJJOJu There has been a lollipop lady on the busy road outside the school for many years. There is no pedestrian or pelican crossing anywhere along this 30mph road. It gets extremely busy, especially at times of morning and evening school runs, and visibility is poor due to many cars parked along the road. In addition, coaches booked for school trips are often parked on the yellow zigzags by the school gates, further impairing visibility. The Council understandably has to make cutbacks, but surely not to the exclusion of children’s safety. I and other parents are concerned that it will take the injury, or even death, of a child, for them to realise the mistake they are making. I heartily thank readers in advance for considering adding their name to the petition. Debbie Emmitt, Porthcawl
RE: ‘THE BOTTLEBANK’ Dear Editor, With regard to the various recent letters demanding that the ‘bottlebank’ be repainted. The frontage of the building is copper patina with the colour the result of oxidisation. It is not designed to be painted. Cleaning is far more complicated that simply ‘power hosing’ it with water and if cleaned properly it would turn bright green again, no doubt to even more complaints. The building is not going anywhere, and although H Townsend is entitled to their opinion, I’m sure they would find it unpleasant if I were to write to this publication using similarly appalling language to describe their home. S Down, Porthcawl
‘INTO THE WOODS’ - A GIANT TONIC Dear Editor, “Someone is on your side, someone else is not, while you’re seeing your side, maybe you forgot”... This was a very special evening - a beguiling production of the Sondheim/Lapine work, with performances of a very high standard, and played with a huge amount of warmth and wit. This was very cleverly and creatively done. The direction was excellent, set design and lighting were beautiful, and the costumes and special effects were lovely. And the musicians and their conductor were superb - and a rare treat. (...” I sort of hate to ask it, but do you have a basket”...) Gaby Rider, Porthcawl Catherine Tanner BMus(Hons) ARCM

EMYR’s KARAVAN4theKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE GET £40,00
0 TAR Dear Editor, Amazingly, we have already raised over £15,000 - thank you so, so, so much for all who have raised or donated recently - what a start! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. It wasn’t there for Emyr and others but we can change that now. Please run, walk, jump, dance - anything you can do again. Our next events in September are: Music in the Marquee on the 15th at The Hi Tide, Porthcawl (Tickets are £7 from Hi Tide 01656 782432) featuring Jordan Marks, The Beats, Fonz & The Poet, Evil Turkeys and DJ Jerry Nash. The Pigs in Space ladies walk on the 20th, from Mumbles to The Atlantic, Porthcawl - Option to do part route and suitable to most fitness levels. Please visit our website to register or see upcoming events http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900493697 We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Huw Owen, Paul Downes and Christian Evans

WILD FLOWER GARDEN Dear Editor, I don’t know who planted the wild flower gardens along Marlas Road in Pyle but I think it looks brilliant. The council should do a bit more of this around the district as it benefits wildlife and gives a lot of people pleasure. Len Roberts, North Cornelly

CONSULTATION END DATE
29 September 2017
Consultation launched 28 June 2017 ABERTAWE BRO MORGANNWG
Patients and the public in Bridgend may soon have a new organisation to represent their views on NHS and social care services. Proposals introduced by Welsh Government would see the abolition of Community Health Councils (CHCs) who have acted as the ‘Patient Watchdog’ since 1974. Proposals would see a new arrangement which would span Health and Social Care. However many of the legal powers held by CHCs would not transfer to the ‘new arrangement’. Vice Chair of ABM CHC Brian Moon said ‘We should be using this once in a generation opportunity to strengthen the voice that local people have in the planning and delivery of services for themselves and their family, especially at a time when huge changes are proposed for our area. Our concern is that instead we are looking at a new organisation with no teeth and no remit to hear directly from the people of Bridgend about their experiences or ideas.’ One of the most significant changes would be that the new organisation would have no role in scrutinising the NHS or holding care organisations to account. The proposals are currently open for consultation and the closing date for responses is 29 September 2017. You can respond by: • Using the online form by accessing the following link: https://consultations.gov.wales/consultations/services-fit-future Or • Downloading a copy of the response form from the above link and returning it either by e-mail to: HQDMailbox@wales.gsi.gov.uk Or • Return by post to: Healthcare Quality Division, Health and Social Services Group, Welsh Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Two cases: a brutal assault, and a multiple murder with no suspect. Ballard knows it is always darkest before dawn. local history BRIDGEND PEOPLE BREATHE LIFE INTO THE PAST
Bridgend Town Council are looking for anyone who has a story to share about the town and surrounding areas during World War 2 to come forward and get involved in the heritage project they are running this year. The project, co-funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, aims to capture oral histories and develop an archive of photographs and memorabilia of Bridgend during the war. It focuses on four main sites: the Royal Ordnance Factories in Brackla and Waterton, Island Farm POW camp, RAF Stormy Down and HMS Urge, the war submarine that the people of Bridgend raised £300,00 to help build. If you have any stories, memories, photographs or memorabilia then please come along to one of the Community Drop-In days at Carnegie House. Hosted by a team of young historians from Bryntirion Comprehensive, you will receive a warm welcome and a listening ear. The Autumn dates for the Community Drop-Ins are 9th September, 14th October and 11th November between 11am-2pm. For further information on events and updates, please follow the Facebook page Wartime Bridgend or get in touch with project manager, Tracy Evans at wartimebridgend@gmail.com or 07588 871843.

AFTERNOON TEA AT THE MUSEUM
The hard working volunteers of Porthcawl Museum served over 50 homemade afternoon teas at the Y Centre recently. Many thanks to them for making this a successful event and to all those who purchased tickets, members and non-members alike helping to support the towns museum. Also enjoying a relaxing afternoon were Madeleine Moon MP and Suzy Davies AM.
DECKCHAIR HISTORY OF PORTHCAWL All of us at sometime have sat on deckchairs, or similar, on the beach. Yet have you ever thought when and who brought the first commercially run deckchair business to Porthcawl. It was Michael William Shanly, at the turn of the last century. Born in 1862 in London to Irish parents, by 1891 he had already established himself as a ‘Chair proprietor and Coffee caterer’ in Chelsea. Around the turn of the last century, as small seaside towns were developing around the coast of England and Wales, Shanly recognised the potential for expanding his business. By 1910, he had obtained a lease on the chair and bathing machine rights at Porthcawl, and established a café. Later, in the 1920’s, a skating rink was established at Cosy Corner. As his influence expanded in South Wales, Shanly obtained the leases on the chair and bathing machines at Barry and Tenby, to where he moved 30 bathing machines from Porthcawl. At Tenby he would further provide a skating rink, cinema, and a café. Unfortunately, by 1937, Shanly’s enterprises had ended in financial disaster, whereupon he retired to Bognor Regis, where he died in 1941 aged 80 years old. Ceri Joseph

SUMMER TERM IN CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY SCHOOL This year’s Drama Club production was ‘The Sound of Music’ and July saw a series of performances at the wonderful ‘Green Hall’ in the village. Everybody involved under the direction of Mrs Evans can be so proud of their startling performances which were a delight to behold. The cast of pupils gave up so much time after school to make it a truly memorable set of concerts. And to our volunteer helpers… Diolch yn fawr! The air is always heavy with emotion on the last day of term as we say “hwyl fawr” to pupils who have been with us for a number of years but this was a particularly emotional end, as we said “so long” never “Goodbye” to OUR Mr. White. Mr. White retires after 41 years of dedicated service to the children of this school. He has been our deputy for 38 of those years, and it is incredibly difficult to encompass such a wonderful career at Cefn in a handful of words; but it has been wonderful! It is perhaps best said briefly, honestly and simply; Thank you Mr. White from us all... and “with love from Cefn School”

Congratulations to Mrs Jones, yet another emotional, funny, amazing, inspirational Year 6 Leavers Assembly…The Oscars! There were many categories, from literature to sport, playground peacemaker to music and a lot more. The children and staff all dressed for the occasion, with some beautiful dresses and smart suits. The pupils who had been learning instruments gave recitals, showcasing their talent and the outcome of all the practising. The school choir who had entered the Urdd Eisteddfod performed their Cerdd Dant one last time, and they were all excited to see Lizzie and Llinos presenting awards, as we owe them a great deal for their coaching and faith in us. All the children won an Oscar, and were also presented with a dictionary/thesaurus. The members of the school council each received a bone china mug, emblazoned with the school logo as a present from the governors for all their hard work. There was a lot of laughter, and many tears from not only the children, but parents as well, as the school has a close and interactive relationship with our families. It is always a sad time as we say goodbye to Year 6, and we wish them well in their chosen comprehensive schools. Mrs Bowie and our bike it crew were pleased to accept the Sustrans Silver Award, this recognises all the trips to and from school on bicycles and scooters, to reduce our carbon footprint. AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

Incredibly, transition for Year 6 starts all over again soon with our Open Evening for prospective parents and pupils for September 2018 on Wednesday 4th October at 6pm. For further information please call the school on 01656 774100. Auditions are taking place during the first couple of weeks of term for our next school show which incredibly will be our 40th consecutive musical! We are very excited to announce that we will be staging ‘Phantom of the Opera’ which will take place 24th – 27th January 2018 at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. ST CLARE’S SMASH THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE
A team from Porthcawl independent school, St Clare’s, set themselves a towering challenge and embarked on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge hoping to raise at least £500 for The Global Fund for Children. The four-strong team left Porthcawl in 26 degrees of sunshine and drove to Yorkshire, camping overnight before scaling Scafell Pike. Then on to Scotland to tackle Ben Nevis where it was -2 degrees and thick mist! Their final challenge was the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon. Kathy Phillips who organised the punishing challenge said “We wanted to raise as much money as we could for Global Fund for Children and we hope that the money raised will make a real difference to children on the edges of society”. St Clare’s has a great reputation for charity fundraising, involving the smallest children in the Nursery all the way up to the Sixth Form. Come and see the difference a St Clare’s education can make for your child. Contact our Registrar, Holly Fowlkes on (01656) 789966 to book a place or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk now! Comprehensive School OPEN EVENING For Year 7 intake in 2018
To be held at 6.00pm on Wednesday 4th October Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of continued excellence for all. Examination results have been consistently above the local and national averages. GCSE Results 2016 were excellent: • Over a third achieved 5 or more grades at A*/A • More than 7 out of every 10 achieved at least 5 grades at A* - C • Almost 100% gained at least 5 qualifications at A*- G grades KS3 Results have been outstanding again this year: • 95% students in Year 9 achieved Level 5+ in English/Maths/Science (Wales 86% 2016) • English 97% (Wales 89% 2016) • Mathematics 97% (Wales 90% 2016) • Science 99% (Wales 93% 2016) We organise frequent transition events to help pupils settle in; here are some of their thoughts: “I can’t wait to be in Year 7!” “I really enjoyed today and the teachers and Year 12 helpers were really nice!” “I have had lots of fun today - the teachers were really kind and the older pupils were very helpful too!” “I loved today in Food Tech, the cheese on toast I made was better than my Mum’s but not as good as my Nan’s!”
Our Last Estyn Inspection Report was extremely positive and we were proud to read that: “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “Transition work with partner primary schools is of the highest quality.” “Nearly all pupils behave very well in class and around the school. They are ready to learn and participate well in lessons. They are courteous and relate well to one another, to their teachers and to other adults.” In the Chief Inspector’s Annual Report Porthcawl’s “Helping Hands” transition programme has been identified by Estyn as an area of “Outstanding Practice”. PCS is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for parents wishing their children to attend Year 7 in September 2018. Telephone 01656 774100 for details or visit our website:

school reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL ‘A’ LEVEL RESULTS 2017
This year 127 students sat an amazing 352 qualifications. The most remarkable fact is the quality of the A Level results; the pass rate (A* to E) was a fantastic 99%, with 28% A/A*. This outstanding performance underlines Porthcawl as a truly inclusive school. Students have reached, and in most cases exceeded, their potential. Students at AS and A2 have had their endeavour rewarded with excellent results. There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for parents who have supported their sons and daughters. Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home. There were many standout performers with 13 students gaining 3As or better at A level. There were exceptional performances
from Sultaan Azam with 4A*, Lauren Ellis-Stretch with 3A* 1A and Caitlin Whiteley with 3A*. The school is delighted that this year two pupils have gained places at Cambridge University. Alexandra Hunt gained 2A* 1A and will read Veterinary Science at Pembroke College and Lydia Pickett achieved 2A* 1A and will take up her place at St Catharine’s College to read Medicine. Sultaan Azam also goes on to study Medicine at Cardiff University. Headteacher Mr Slade commented that this excellent series of results will ensure Porthcawl students have secured places at some of the best universities in the country. Mr Slade continued to congratulate staff and students who were praised for their hard work and steadfast dedication. Mr Slade concluded that the results were especially impressive given the large size of the entry; with well over a thousand papers being sat at A Level. The following departments performed exceptionally, with pass rates 85% or above (A* to C): Business Studies, Chemistry, Electronics, Mathematics, History, Sociology, English, Drama, Music and Physical Education. The following Year 13 pupils performed exceptionally well at A level: Anna Arrieta AAAA Sultaan Azam A*A*A*A* Lauren Ellis-Stretch A*A*A*A Alexandra Hunt A*A*A Elin Morris A* AA Isobel Overton A*AA Lydia Pickett A* A*A Hannah Robertson A* AA Sarah Spencer A* AA Benjamin White AAA Caitlin Whiteley A*A*A* Katie Williams A* AA Sarah Williams A*AA

poets corner AT THE CRACK OF DAWN When you wake up, At the crack of dawn, You will start the day, With a stretch and a yawn.
You have some coffee or tea, To clear your head and mind, Before leaving your home, To go and meet mankind. The sky looks so clear, With just a slight breeze, The pollen count is low, So you shouldn’t sneeze. As the day moves on, The sun starts to get warm, That’s why we like waking up, At the crack of dawn. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend
XMA EXMA ECZEMA
Why is there no ‘X’ in eczema? It sounds like there ought to be, But why there is no ‘X’ in there Is a mystery to me. Two ‘E’s, ‘M’, ‘A’, a ‘C’ and a ‘Z’, But why there’s no ‘X’ just baffles my head. The people who work out our spelling Must have got it wrong. Somewhere among those six letters An ‘X’ must surely belong. They must be sadists or something worse Or suffering under a terrible curse. To spell such a word without an ‘X’ Has caught us all in a wicked hex. So when you’re rewriting your dictionary And carried away with your task, Please put an ‘X’ in eczema And I’ll send you a gift for Eczemas! Bob Davies, North Cornelly
PEN-Y-FAN
Perfect conditions, the day was just right. Onwards and upwards we prepared for the fight. Puffing and blowing along the steep path. Stopping and staring and people to pass. The top was ahead, how we’d done it was class. The views from the top were impressive and vast. Our little dog Lewy had a rest just like us. Whilst we opened our picnic and ate without fuss. The decent was much easier. Smiles all around. We felt quite amazing - an achievement we’re proud. Lyn Lewis, Bridgend 28 | seaside news
SUPERHEROES
Are there Superheroes, Who through the air can fly Who can live forever And never ever cry? Are there Superheroes With powers beyond belief Who rescue damsels in distress And save us all from grief? They’re not real of course! And yet, Maybe then again.... Perhaps they move quite quietly, And never make a fuss; Who knows? Perhaps one is sitting there Right beside you on the bus. A gentle word, a helping hand Or by simply “being there” There are helpers all about us Simply because there care. So, yes, there are Superheroes Around us every everywhere, You don’t have to look that far to find one Visit Velindre Hospital; you’re sure to find some there. John Keylock, Porthcawl
MR NOBODY
Jamie says it was not me, Kim says it’s not herself. Pippa’s only little, she can’t reach the kitchen shelf. But someone’s eaten all those sweets, whoever can it be? Don’t tell me they were gobbled up by Mr Nobody. There is toothpaste round the bathroom sink, The towel is on the floor. Someone’s drawn with face paint upon the bedroom door. It’s no use asking who it was, You know as well as me, That things like that are always done by Mr Nobody. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

DOWN MEMORY LANE
Now that it’s time for holidays Sun’s hid his face away The heavens are dropping fatness On Stoneleigh’s special day Intrepid now we all set out Wrapped up with mac and brolly We bundle in our private bus Fearing not our folly We’re making for a special train That’s part of history But weather and traffic all combine – Alas, too late we’ll be But train and staff all patient wait No – not the modern age A fine cream tea to all is served As we chug on narrow gauge With verdant valleys slipping past We pause at wayside station Toot toot – our engine’s passed to pull Us back to destination And here, bus driver patient waits To take us home again For this was not a journey Just a trip down memory lane We’ll remember Gwili railway And those times of long ago With those who made this day for us A precious memory For we all have our own journey And to each our memories given While each new day’s God’s precious gift As we’re on our way to heaven. THE RISING SUNNE BY JANET NICOLA EVANS
I chide rising, naughty school boy sun- alluding to wise words of revered John Donne; for ascending and enforcing day to start, hence from patchwork dreams, I must depart. Tedious cockerel heralds ominous dawn. Would it were not an onomatopaeic morn. I must rise and battle on – a new line, a new page, a new song. What will today write? Success or defeat to life’s fight? Janet Nicola Evans, Porthcawl

local news STEM CELL DONORS There are 529 remarkable people who are registered stem cell donors in Bridgend. These individuals are real-life heroes who will potentially save the life of someone with blood cancer. Anthony Nolan is the incredible charity that helps to match patients with donors from their register. However, 1 in 8 people across the UK tragically do not find a match. Consequently, more needs to be done to increase the number of potential donors. An estimated 2,000 people in the UK are in desperate need of a bone marrow or stem cell transplant ever year. There is an extremely common misnomer that donating can be painful. In fact, most donors only experience mild flu-like symptoms and may feel a bit tired afterwards. A short-term inconvenience that will make the world of difference to someone whose life could be saved. Every 20 minutes someone in the country is diagnosed with blood cancer and only about 60% of them actually find their best possible match from a stranger. Donors can help cure someone’s cancer and give them a second chance at life. Donors must be between 16 - 30 and in good health, To find out more go to: https://www.anthonynolan.org/8-ways-you-could-savelife/donate-your-stem-cells Madeleine Moon MP Welsh Labour Parliamentary Candidate for the Bridgend constituency www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002
QUESTIONS AND ARTWORK Following an invitation from the chair, I was pleased to be the guest speaker at Porthcawl Shout Forum’s July meeting. Many had come prepared with questions to ask me and I was happy to answer a number of questions on both national and local issues. Question topics included the town’s re-development, the Salt Lake site, business rates, traffic concerns, the general appearance of the town, the new Primary Health Care Centre, ownership of the Severn bridges, the local development plan, Cardiff Airport and APD (Air Passenger Duty). There were many issues raised and I undertook to follow up on a number of these. Last month, I was delighted to sponsor an exhibition hosted by Porthcawl Art Society entitled ‘Art for Art’s Sake’. The exhibition staged at the Welsh Assembly’s Futures Gallery in the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay, ran from the 8th August -31st August 2017. There were a range of paintings including ‘Heading for the Shade’; ‘Poppies on Grey’; ‘End of Shift’; ‘African Sunset’; ‘Butterflies & Blackberries’; ‘Lochness Sunset’; ‘Wild Garden’; ‘Rest Bay’; ‘Thunder in the Valley’; ‘Jaguar’; ‘Off Capri’; ‘Beach Huts’ and many more. The paintings were fantastic. Well done to all the artists exhibiting. Carwyn Jones AM Welsh Labour Leader

FIRST TWO HOURS PARKING FREE AT THE RHIW
HOW YOUR FOOD WASTE IS BEING RECYCLED AS ENERGY AND FERTILISER
The first two hours of parking at the Rhiw multi-storey car park in Bridgend town centre is now FREE up until the end of March 2018. Recognising that changing lifestyles, internet shopping and increased competition is affecting town centres right the way across Wales, the Welsh Government has made £3m available to support free parking pilot schemes in local authorities during the current financial year. Bridgend County Borough Council has decided to use its £131,000 allocation to introduce a scheme that will benefit Bridgend town centre. The Rhiw multi-storey is perfectly located for this pilot scheme and, if it is seen to have had a positive effect on the town centre, then we will then have to see whether the Welsh Government provide a further allocation for a free parking scheme to continue in 2018-19. The car park opened last November and is part of an exciting new Rhiw redevelopment project funded by Welsh Government, Coastal Housing Group and the council, which also includes 28 new apartments and a commercial unit. Those apartments are currently being fitted out, while an announcement will be made soon on the business that will be occupying the development’s new commercial unit.
All of the food waste collected from homes in Bridgend County Borough is now being recycled locally at the new Agrivert plant in Stormy Down. Together with Swansea Council, we have agreed a 15-year contract for all of our household food waste – around 18,000 tonnes a year – to be processed at the high-tech plant, which opened eight months ago near Pyle. After it is collected from the kerbside, the food waste will be processed by anaerobic digestion at the plant so that it is used first to generate electricity before being literally ploughed back into the food chain as organic fertiliser, which will be applied to around 3,000 acres of nearby farm land. The scheme is being supported with Welsh Government funding and will help us to achieve ambitious Wales-wide recycling targets of 70 per cent by 2025. For our food waste to be processed within the county borough itself is certainly the most environmentally-friendly option for us. As well as helping to reduce our carbon footprint, this arrangement means that the by-products of our residents’ food waste will be used locally, while it also benefits local employment. It’s a winwin situation. Find out more about home recycling at www.recycleforbridgend.wales

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR BUSINESS AWARDS The finalists for the fifth Bridgend Business Forum Awards have been revealed, and it’s a list that once again highlights the wealth of innovative and talented business people that we have in the county borough across a wide range of sectors. In all, there are 19 finalists in eight categories, which include awards for the start-up business of the year, the service business of the year and entrepreneur of the year. An overall Bridgend business of the year will also be crowned. Sponsored by Bridgend College and supported by Bridgend County Borough Council, the awards will take place on Friday 29 September at the Coed-Y-Mwstwr Hotel in Coychurch. The Bridgend Business Forum Awards continue to recognise the vital role that businesses, entrepreneurs and employees play in creating a strong economy here in Bridgend. The calibre, passion and commitment of the businesses that entered the awards is phenomenal, and demonstrates that Bridgend is open to business and indeed thriving. I would like to wish all finalists the very best of luck for the 2017 awards and look forward to meeting the shortlisted applicants at the awards ceremony. PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB
PORTHCAWL SHOUT FORUM
The SS Samtampa and Mumbles Lifeboat, Edward Prince of Wales exhibition was opened by Porthcawl Mayor, Cllr Lorrie DesmondWilliams and BCBC Mayor, Cllr Pam Davies at the Y Centre, John Street, Porthcawl. It commemorates the 70th anniversary of the tragedy that saw the loss of both vessels and all hands, 47 men and boys died in a raging sea of oil and rocks at Sker. The Samtampa was one of 200 Liberty ships loaned to Britain by America to help win the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest and largest battle of WW2. To help expand the town’s maritime heritage this bilingual exhibition has been produced by Porthcawl Shout Forum as part of their disaster memorial plans. Launched at the Senedd by Patron Carwyn Jones AM in April it was supported with drama, music and course work by school children and students from the three affected areas, Middlesbrough, Mumbles and Porthcawl. It moved to the Swansea Waterfront Museum in May and has since been on display at various schools in the Mumbles area. We are indebted to both Mayors, John Berry at the Y Centre, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Porthcawl Town Council and the late Dr Gilbert Clark for all their help. Gary Victor
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES What a wonderful surprise the members had at the Porthcawl Stroke Club, where Sian of the Co-op’s local branch in Porthcawl gave some delicious treats to Mr & Mrs Duggan to hand out at the Stroke Club. The carrot cake and chocolate cake were a luxury delight and the current buns were so fresh they were yummy. The two ladies in the front of the picture from left to right are Mary and Syliva who are both in ill health at the moment; so we wish them both a speedy recovery. Sylivia is going to move near her daughter soon, so all the members wish her good luck in the future. Our gratitude goes to Sian from our local Co-Op store for your support. On behalf of all the Stroke Club members - thank you. Ring Keith or Mary Duggan if you wish to join us on (01656) 773376. Barbara Matthews

From my book Uncaged… When I was in prison, I came across a book called, The Happiest People on Earth. The happiest people on earth according to this guy, were Christians. I was starting to believe him. One night, when Pastor Roy was preaching at the church, I began to feel really strange. I realised that I was being challenged to take the next step in giving my life to Jesus, and my heart started pounding as I listened. Roy explained that sin had separated us from God and that we need Jesus to bring us back to God through what he has done for us on the cross. God would not force us to receive Jesus and give our lives to him, but if we did, it would mean we could be forgiven and go to heaven. Not only that, but God’s blessings would flow into our lives and we would learn what we were created for. As I listened, something massive seemed about to happen. Roy ended his sermon by asking if anyone was ready to give their life to Jesus. I sprang to my feet, as if the window of opportunity would be open for only a short while. I went home that evening feeling that there were now two of us. A Presence came into my life that has never left me. Neil Harvey

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT As promised last month, we have put together our plans for the next six months, including our – dare I say it – Christmas events! Our day trip for September is to Monmouth, with an afternoon boat ride down the River Wye from Symond’s Yat and a light tea to follow. Please phone me for more information. Now that the summer months are slowly coming to an end, we re-start many of our classes. Don’t forget we have sewing classes every Monday afternoon, computer classes every Tuesday and Wednesday, bingo sessions every Monday evening and Friday afternoon, and we would still like another player for Partner Whist, every Wednesday evening. If you can play Whist, please come and join us. Ballet and tap classes are held every Saturday morning for youngsters, (in the Rees Hall) whilst tap lessons are given to the older generation on a Tuesday morning. Mental Health Matters (Wales) meet every Wednesday afternoon from 1-5pm, and our own in-house group – Cwtch Cynffig meet every Thursday from 10am-4pm. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our web site: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

PAWSOME CHARITY K9 EVENT HOSTED BY MALPEET K9 ACADEMY
TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa Just before summer we were able to get our prepared crates off to Ghana, and were thinking of having a summer break. However, ‘best laid plans of mice and men etc’. We managed to spend time sorting out the workshop. We also received two large trailer loads of plywood off-cuts all to be trimmed and cut to size for our crates. We were also able to sell surplus tools and hardwear at both the county show in Pencoed and at the Lions’ classic car Rally at Porthcawl Rugby Club in August . We are having to raise money at the moment to re-roof our workshop, at the same time raise funds for our training programmes in Africa. We are still a little ‘tooled out’ so are not able to collect tools until the end of October so please hold on to them. We do not want any hardwear, and if delivering tools on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, please pre-sort them. (Tools only) We are currently working on Auto Mechanics, Carpentry and Building Kits for Sierra Leone and Zambia shipments in September and October. Meanwhile we look forward to taking part in the Porthcawl Museum’s Victorian Era commemorations on September 16th. John Hanson Group Coordinator Tel: 01656 786367
U3A stands for the University of the Third Age - a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. Here in Porthcawl we’ve a large and flourishing U3A and this September a host of activities from which to choose - truly something for every taste. As summer recedes and the evenings grow shorter, why not join us - make new friends, learn, laugh and live!
The event consisted of a fun 3.5 mile race through the equine fields of Pencoed College, with 27 optional obstacles, including jumping, crawling and wading through water testing the agility and speed of owner and canine companion. The winners, Dan and his furry friend Erol, romped home in a spectacular 27 minutes 21 seconds and won a holiday for two in Club Marina Tenerife and there were goody bags for everyone who took part! The event, which raised over £1500 for NewLink Wales, was hosted by Malpeet K9 Academy, one of the world’s top canine training academies, established in 2008 by MD Simon Mallin. As one of only a few companies within the UK licensed to possess controlled substances for the use of training detection dogs, Malpeet K9 Academy has earned an enviable reputation as one of the UK’s leading training providers. Can me and my pooch take part next year? You can register for next year’s event on Saturday 12th May 2018, via the NewLink Wales website www.newlinkwales.org.uk

AUTUMN STAR CLUSTERS
The sun shone on Porthcawl for the annual Buckaners Carnival.
Scientists believe that all stars are born in clusters, which often contain hundreds of stars. The Sun belonged to a cluster that was formed 4.5 billion years ago but during that time the stars have become separated and are now scattered around the Milky Way galaxy. Younger clusters remain intact and the nearest of these can quickly be found during autumn evenings. A pair of binoculars will reveal stunning detail and give you an idea of just how many stars a cluster contains. The easiest to find is the Pleiades, which appear as a small misty cloud rising in the east. At a distance of 400 light years the Pleiades is the second closest star cluster to Earth. It contains over 1000 stars and you are supposed to be able to see seven of the stars just using your naked eye. To the left and below the Pleiades there is the bright orange star Aldebaran that represents the eye of the bull in the Taurus constellation. Around this star can be found a 100 stars belonging to the Hyades cluster which is just 150 light years distant and therefore the closest to us. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society
DOG’S TRUST – DOG OF THE MONTH Sparky is an 11-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. He is independent lad who likes to be given his own space. He happily entertains himself with chews and toys. Sparky still enjoys his walks but then he is happy to curl up and have a nap. He will suit a quiet, adult only home with minimal visitors and he would prefer to be the only dog in the home. He is a character and once he knows you he would make a superb companion; so could Sparky be the one for you? If you would like more information regarding Sparky, then please call Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219 or pop down to the centre near Pen-y-Fai CF31 4NG. Also visit the website on www.dogstrust.org.uk The numerous floats and walkers had put in a tremendous effort into their costumes and float designs, making it a difficult decision for the judges. The winner of the children float was Blue Water Club with -yellow brick road, 2nd was the Y Centre with Bugsy Malone. 1st in the adult float was Porthcawl Rotary with My Fair Lady and 2nd was the Ancient Briton with Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The walkers was won by the Webb sisters as Taboo. The Carnival Committee would like to thank everyone who took part and for all those behind the scenes for making this a successful day. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH In the Bible, Joseph encounters two fellow prisoners who have no problem recalling the facts of their dreams, yet they didn’t know how to draw meaning from them. In short, they lacked understanding. I once heard a young man say: “My life is full of questions. I come to church because I need answers.” Another woman told me: “I’ve got lots of questions too. But I don’t come to church for answers. Life isn’t that simple. I come to church to gain understanding. I can deal with the unanswered questions and the problems in my life as long as my understanding is increasing.” Sometimes we need an understanding of why it is that we don’t grasp the meaning of some things in our lives. Joseph’s reply to his fellow prisoners’ quest for meaning was that the interpretation of the facts of life belongs to God. We may have all the facts, but God has the truth that gives our lives meaning, purpose and value. It’s enough to motivate us not only to go to church, but also to seek God in all our ways. God Bless. The Bridgend Explorer Scout Unit for young people (15-18 years) meets every week and we are active locally, helping at events including the Laleston Gardening Club show, Porthcawl Lions Book Sales, Broadlands Fun Day and the Bryntirion fireworks display. We also help as Young Leaders for Cub and Scouts throughout the district. Next August we have a big trip planned to the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland. This will be a fantastic opportunity to have new experiences, try new activities and meet Scouts from around the world. To pay for activities at Kandersteg we will be working hard over the next year to raise funds. We are planning a quiz night in September at The Grove (date to be confirmed), bag packing at Sainsburys on 7 October and will be taking part in the Porthcawl Christmas Swim. We are planning more events and would appreciate your support. Any suggestions for events where we could help at or any direct donations would be greatly appreciated, as they will help to make the trip a truly memorable occasion. We have already received generous donations of £780 and raised £320 to get us to Switzerland and fully immerse ourselves in the experience. Conor Farrell-John (Explorer Scout)

legal advice FINANCIAL CONCERNS FOLLOWING SEPARATION
Life is very difficult immediately after separation. Emotions run high, and all energy is devoted to survival. So far as finances are concerned, it is important to keep things stable, to keep the finances as they were prior to separation. If you know the bills are being paid, and you are not going to get into debt, then agree with your partner to leave everything in place. Keep the banking arrangements the same, as nothing is as worrying as changing the bank arrangements immediately after separation. Doing this without agreement is usually seen as a very aggressive thing to do – and will often result in lawyers being involved and legal expenses incurring. Do as much as you can by agreement, so that neither of you feels threatened. Provided there isn’t going to be any obvious prejudice to either of you, the less you change in the early stages the better. For most families, money is very tight immediately after separation. You will be budgeting for two households instead of one, often in circumstances where there was only just enough to go around when you were together. Both of you will need to be very careful with your expenditure. It is important to discuss this, and to agree – if possible – on anything that is unusual. If you think that your partner is going to run up debts on a credit card, for example, then you may have to take urgent steps to stop that. If the home is in your partner’s sole name, it is possible to protect your rights by registering a notice or restriction. You should do this immediately if you think there is a risk that your partner may sell or remortgage the home. If you require any further advice relating to the above, please contact us. Why is it important to have a will? If you die without having made a will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the rules of intestacy. The distribution depends on whether you are married (or in a registered civil partnership) and whether you have any children. This may well have undesired consequences. Having a will ensures your estate is distributed according to your instructions and wishes. You should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. When making a Will it would be helpful for your executors if you keep a clear written summary of your assets (and debts). You should consider who the Beneficiaries of your estate will be. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary you will want to provide for. Other beneficiaries may include relatives, friends, charities and other organisations you would like to make gifts to. Your will can name classes of beneficiary (eg all your grandchildren – including those who may be unborn at the time of writing the will). The will should also take into account what will happen if a beneficiary predeceases you: for example, whether you would want a deceased child’s share of your estate to pass instead to his or her family. The will should make it clear what is to be given to each beneficiary. Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. Wills commonly include an indication of your wishes for your funeral, though these are not binding on your executors. You may want to prepare a separate letter of wishes providing guidance for your executors. For example, such guidance might be aimed at helping them understand how you would want different beneficiaries of a trust to be treated. Again, this is not binding on your executors. Finally, it is worth reviewing your will regularly, particularly if there are changes in your family circumstances, your financial position or in the law relating to wills and inheritance tax. Your will can be amended as necessary with an appropriate ‘codicil’, or a new will drawn up and the existing will revoked.

We received a very warm welcome indeed and enjoyed a most delicious tea. Also entertainment in the form of a Fashion Show by Samantha B. Thank you ladies for your hospitality. July 12th - We visited St. Tielo’s Church Bishopston for the 2017 Flour Festival. This year the theme was ‘Stories of the Old Testament’. Each window in the Church depicted a different story in flowers. The arrangements were truly amazing and very moving. Well worth a visit. After a very nice lunch in the village hall, we then made our way to the Mumbles. July 18th - The day of the Summer Walk, which this year took us around Margam Park, which looked beautiful in the summer sunshine, afterwards lunch at Pyle Garden Centre. July 28th - We held our Summer Fayre at Trinity Church. Thanks to all who helped. We meet again on September 6th - at Gilgal Church Hall, Woodland Avenue when we look forward to welcoming old and new members. M Freeman

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this in early August we have a quiet time to look forward to as we don’t have any meetings, but I’m sure our Cream Tea will be good as it was last year. Our outing in July to Brecon and the Mountain Railway was enjoyed by all and more outings are planned for later in the year. Our monthly indoor games afternoon was competitive as usual and our literary group shared their favourite poems. Our guild meeting took the form of a craft demonstration organised by Freda Rodger and the craft group. We all had the chance to try our hand at something new with varying success! Our meeting this month is on September 13th, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when we will hold our Harvest Tea with home grown entertainment. I can promise you a good tea, a sing-a-long and a laugh so do come and join us. You will be very welcome! Dorothy Thomas Tel: 772157

A celebratory lunch was recently held at the Bear Hotel Cowbridge to mark 70 years since the Bridgend Soroptimist club was chartered. 89 club members and guests, together with fellow Soroptimists from Wales South Region and beyond, enjoyed a superb luncheon served impeccably as always by the hotel staff, who were on hand to distribute portions of a splendid cake which was cut by President Frances. It was a pleasure to welcome honorary member Madeleine Moon MP to come along and share the occasion and also Barbara Dixon who is Programme Director of Soroptimist International who was the guest speaker. She congratulated the club on their many years of hard work on projects as diverse as Barnardo’s, HM Parc Prison, Y Bont Special Needs school Bridgend, to name but a few in the community, but in particular was full of praise for the

Tuesday the 8th of August saw us off on our annual trip. This year we went nearer home on the Tour bus around Cardiff. What a great day we all had and what a lot of information they told us about our capital city. I’ll never think of Cardiff in the same way again. Lots of us got off at the Bay, stopped for coffee in an Italian restaurant, then off to see the Poppies which had come from London which were pouring out of a window in the Senydd building. Then on to the Pierhead building which had a short video of the port through the windows over the past 100 years. The attendants were so helpful it was very interesting, and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Time was passing so we headed back to the Italian restaurant for lunch, then back on the Tour bus. We got off at Cardiff Castle, and with plenty of time we went into the Castle. It was a great way to spend the last of our time before we got back on our coach for home. All agreed it had been a great trip. Our next meeting is on 12th of September usual place usual time call in and meet us. Christine Callaghan

business & finance A week or so ago at the time of writing, I took a call from a lady regarding her widowed mother. mum had suffered a stroke a couple of weeks before and the result was now that she could no longer handle her own affairs or make even simple decisions. Further, the daughter, (let’s call her Susan) was also left very, very concerned about the issue of making any decision regarding mum’s health and welfare, particularly any future medical decisions. The two of them had often talked about Susan having Power of Attorney over mum’s affairs but they simply never got round to sorting it. It wasn’t a cost issue, they just never set the time aside. Sadly, this situation occurs much too often. Susan is now left in no-man’s land, with mum now unable to provide Power of Attorney to her and her affairs being put on hold. Susan now must apply to the Court of Protection for their sanction for Susan to handle mum’s affairs. This can be a protracted and costly exercise, not to mention all the hassle in the meantime. A call to us prior to the deterioration in mum’s health would have them receive some important guidance and we would have arranged for a suitably experienced Adviser in these matters to assist mum in putting the Power of Attorney in Susan’s hands. Now, Susan has to follow the second best option. Call us now to have an informal chat. On the mortgage front also, people can leave it too late. Research data provided by CACI Market Data (March 2017)
shows that between August and December 2017, more than 65.5 BILLION POUNDS worth of residential mortgages are due to be repaid. If YOU are someone who has a mortgage to redeem by December, especially if you are on ‘interest-only’ and don’t have the capital to repay the mortgage or you are over the age of 55 years, call us now for your next move – 01656 782545. gardening advice FANCY GROWING YOUR OWN?
Following a recent very successful invitation for applications for allotment plots at our private site, we would like to once again invite local residents to apply for future vacancies. We have exciting plans for local Community involvement at the site which you can have a chance of being part of. Cornelly Allotment Society is a private members allotment situated on the B4283 approach road from South to North Cornelly and currently consists of 40 plots. This is one of Wales’ oldest allotments and there has been an allotment on the site since the days of the lime kilns in the area and was established in 1914 by the then landowner, Mr Eddie Morris. Vacancies are rare and at the moment there is no waiting list for plots so the society committee is inviting residents in the Cornelly and surrounding areas to submit applications for anticipated vacancies in the near future. If you would like to be included on the new waiting list simply email The society Secretary, Chris North and include your name, address and contact number. Good Luck! cornellyallotments@gmail.com

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB September – Harvest month, everything always needs picking at the same time! (This is where your freezing skills come in). Although, just like football, whatever went astray last season, autumn heralds a fresh start! Continue to feed and dead-head hanging baskets and containers and they should keep going until the first frost, always a welcome sight! Plant Hyacinths and amaryllis now to ensure fab blooms at Christmas, perfect for presents. Guess what – it’s time to plant spring bulbs again, lovely daffodils to brighten up early spring. September is the perfect time for a bit of lawn maintenance (no scowling!) - to avoid waterlogging and compaction aerate your lawn with a garden fork and apply autumn fertiliser which is rich in potassium and low in nitrogen. Come the spring you’ll be glad you did it! Perennial weeds are more vulnerable to weed killers in the autumn, so get spraying. Did you know – liquidized slugs and bugs make an excellent natural insecticide! (this is not one for the fainthearted) We have a trip to Malvern Flower Show on the 24th September, if you would like to come (we would love to have you!) please contact us on our website. Chris Early
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Autumn has crept in, and before we are ready its time to think about planting bulbs once more. There are a lot still in borders and pots from last year in our small plot, but we will plant some new. Crocus, winter flowering pansies, and everybody’s favourite Tete a Tete daffodils. September is a good time to plant new perennials while the soil is still warm. Continue to dead-head all your repeat flowering roses. Salad plants can still be sown lettuces such as Winter Gem and Chard will grow over the winter, ready for spring harvesting. The Laleston Gardening Club Annual Show will be held at Cliff Cottage on Saturday September 2nd. Judging takes place between 12noon-1pm. There will be a barbecue, tea and coffee, welsh cakes cooked on site, raffles, tombola, and some interesting craft stalls. There will be an auction of donated items of entries always a lot of fun. The Gardening Club would like thank BAVO for their support in helping members in applying for available grants that has resulted in a lot of maintenance being carried out this past year. The Gardening Club continues to play its part by holding regular fund-raising events. Gwen Bradford

health & beauty STAYING ON TOP OF YOUR EYE HEALTH THAT LITTLE COG ‘MINDFULNESS’ Almost everyone experiences changes to their vision once they reach their 40s. People might strain their eyes more to bring something into focus, or can’t read as well in dim lighting. This is because your eyes lose their ability to focus as the lenses become less flexible and the muscles around them become less efficient. This is called presbyopia and it makes it more difficult for your eyes to adjust between distance and reading vision. Claire Edwards, director of Specsavers in Porthcawl, said: “Presbyopia can be alarming if you’ve never had any problems with your eyesight before but it doesn’t mean something is seriously wrong with your eyes.” “Most people first notice their vision is changing when they start straining their eyes to see their phone properly or have to hold it further away to bring the screen into focus. Some people also experience tiredness, headaches or blurred vision.” “If this is the case, the best way to keep on top of your eye health is to have regular check-ups; at Specsavers we recommend everyone has an eye test every two years, and even more frequently for children or those with an eye health condition. This advice applies to everyone, whether or not you wear glasses already or you have noticed a problem with your vision.” To book a test, call Specsavers in Porthcawl on 01656 782832, or visit: www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/porthcawl.
Mindfulness in the Buddha’s doctrine is simply ‘recollection’. As data in your mind surfaces, there is a recollection of that which is arising, a simple knowing. This isn’t just a conceptual labelling process, but that which is deeper than the mere conventional world we can actually experience. Themind factor of tranquillity gives the required slowness and space to actually comprehend this knowing. Tranquility is sometimes translated as concentration. So the two are required, calmness aids mindfulness. Imagine focussing a microscope to a finer resolution. That’s what mindfulness does, it picks up the unseen. When the mind is stable and clear, the practitioner witnesses that mind and emotional states are fleeting, subject to change, impermanent, subject to causal links, and there is a distinctive dropping of identification. Dropping the world view position from ‘Mine’ and ‘I am’ is a significant event. For many it is here where transformation takes place. At this stage, just notice what agitates you and observe how you view it from ‘I want, I need or I will become when’. Those moments are opportunities for you to pause, observe and decide the best course of action. Mindfulness is one factor of the Eightfold Noble Path that the Buddha prescribed. VITAMIN D MISSION The number of children with vitamin D deficiency has soared by more than 200 per cent in five years because parents are unaware how important it is for health, a study has revealed. It also exposed a ‘worrying’ lack of knowledge by GPs and health workers about the Government’s guidelines on the vitamin. Now the public health awareness campaign which commissioned the study is warning parents must give their children supplements and fortified foods to avoid a return to ‘Victorian’ levels of vitamin D deficiency, when the bone-softening disease rickets was common. The Vitamin D Mission also gathered hospital data on admissions for vitamin D deficiency and found cases in under-16s have jumped from 1,398 in 2009/10 to 4,638 in 2013/14. The east Midlands saw the biggest jump in cases – with a 628 per cent increase since 2009/10 - while the south west saw the smallest increase at 3 per cent. Dr Benjamin Jacobs, consultant paediatrician at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and clinical consultant to the Vitamin D Mission, said: “These findings are very worrying as they seem to suggest that parents in the UK are still not properly informed of the major health issues associated with low levels of vitamin D”. Around five years ago readers generously helped me to raise money to study cello performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, London. I am a member of the London Musical Theatre Orchestra and have played on the West End at the Lyceum Theatre and also at the London Palladium. I have a successful folk trio, Solasta, and we have performed at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and Cecil Sharp House. I am contacting you again to let your readers know of my progress and of Solasta’s Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help record our debut album this Autumn at Stiwdio Felin Fach, Abergavenny. It couldn’t have been better; a sunny summer’s evening, everyone’s favourite opera choruses and a full house! The programme included Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti, Purcell and Bizet, accompanied by a scratch 18 piece orchestra made up of RWCMD students, alumni and local professionals. We were fortunate to have three talented soloists from RCWMD; David Powton, an MA in Opera graduate, Adam Jondelius, also an operatic MA, and Kate Reynolds, another Masters graduate with a keen interest in opera. With such a well qualified trio, the audience was guaranteed a polished performance. There was a varied mixture of solo items, duets and choir choruses, something to please everyone. The interval bar, heralded by the most appropriate ‘Drinking Song’ (Brindisi), helped the lighthearted mood continue. This has been our conductor Rosie Howarth’s third concert so she has now completed a year with us. She has taken us on an interesting journey, tackling classical, traditional and contemporary music. We are looking forward to more of her energy and enthusiasm when we start back on Wednesday Sept. 6th. Why not join us? You can find us on our website or on Facebook. JUDITH ANNE SHAWE CONCERTS Raising money for charity while enjoying music making is always a good idea. It’s now 3 years since the first fundraiser - the concerts have made almost £3000. This year, June’s concert at All Saints’ Porthcawl, featured the famous Pendyrus Male Choir in aid of Cancer Research UK. August saw the return of singing duo Cantare for the benefit of LATCH. David is a member of Only Men Aloud, while Angharad is a soloist with Welsh National Opera. This versatile couple sang songs for everyone to enjoy, and there was tea and cake - a regular occurrence after an afternoon concert! The next treat will be on Sunday October 22nd at 3pm at All Saints’, when the Young Musicians/Performers show off their talent. This year there’ll be a 14 year old member of the Magic Circle, as well as dancers and instrumentalists. Profits from this concert will go to LATCH Porthcawl. Tickets for the concerts are available from KOKO on Well Street and Maple on John Street - both in Porthcawl. Thank you all for your support. Judith Anne Shawe

Kenfig Hill based rock musician Jayce Lewis, who is currently recording a new solo album at his own Northstone Studios in Court Colman, is set to tour. He’s special guest on Gary Numan’s 14-date British Tour which kicks off with a Welsh date on September 30th at the Tramshed, Cardiff. Gary is famous for his 80s hits which included ‘Cars’ and ‘Are Friends Electric’, and the concerts will no doubt sell out so get your tickets now! I still haven’t seen Jayce live so will try and make the gig! It’s also great to see another original band doing well – Bridgend’s ‘Those Damn Crows’ have been up and down the country doing the rock circuit and getting rave reviews. If you’re wondering why there’s no review on the Newton Pop and Beer Festival, it’s because of our early printing schedule so I hope it all went well! Thanks to Dave Jones from Heroine Lullaby, an alternative acoustic act which I will check out next month. arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW It was the films of the silent era that first got me interested in the movies – stars like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd were my heroes – and I was captivated by the movie camera of that period, from the early wooden box with a single brass-bodied lens at the front and a crank handle on the side, to the more refined Bell & Howell 2709 from 1912 onwards. The characters in these films seemed to do the most fantastic things, as exemplified by Harold Lloyd dangling from the clock-face at the top of a tall Los Angeles building in his 1923 romantic comedy ‘Safety Last!’ Closer scrutiny shows that special effects played a large part in film-making even then, but in those days it was all in-thecamera effects, stunt-work and clever set construction to create the illusion of danger. If you ever get the chance to see some of these early classic comedies, jump at the opportunity. Silent films were truly international, bringing fun and excitement to a worldwide audience in a way that was unique to that great period, and many of the lessons in film grammar learned at that time wouldn’t be out of place today. A REAL PRIVILEGE
There are a few times in life when you can say you “were there”. I was there at the Welsh Proms, Brass & Voices concert at St David’s Hall, Cardiff to hear the wonderful, trophy-winning Cory Band playing a selection of melodies by composers including Verdi and Tchaikovsky. Accompanying the band was a massed male choir just shy of 200 voices, comprising the Bridgend Male Choir, Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir, Ogmore Valley Male Choirs and Côr Meibion Morlais under the ever-attentive baton of the charismatic Owain Arwel Hughes CBE. In essence, quite a tour de force of Welsh musical tradition gathered in one place. The pride, passion, and commitment shown by these choirs who, sung their hearts out showing a depth of feeling from the gentle contemplation of Parry’s Myfanwy to the rousing verses of Hartsough’s Gwahoddiad. it emanates, with a real sense of community – wonderful, spirited men singing with their musical brothers bringing the audience into their wide and loving family. Men with such a tremendous gift generously giving without any sense of showy performance. Honest, simple, straightforward singing from the heart and the soul, and we were blessed just to see and hear it. Debbie Nichol, Notes from Last Night

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR - WEDDINGS The choir are now in the middle of a very busy period entertaining at weddings. We have already performed in various venues this year including Margam Abbey, St Peters Church, Dinas Powys and at Groes Faen. We are looking forward to the weekend of 2nd September when we will be performing at St Matthews church in Derby. So travelling to various venues is not a problem. Why not consider having Porthcawl Male Choir sing at your very special day? From comments received thus far you will not be disappointed. A recent comment received read “the choir gave a marvellous half hour concert before the arrival of the bride which had the guests spellbound. At the receiving line before the wedding breakfast all guests said the choir was marvellous. The choir could not have done more to make a special day even more special. A big thank you”. Brian Davies (father of the bride) Please visit our website: www.porthcawlmalechoir.co.uk where you will find all the details regarding contacting us, choice of music etc. We sing both English and Welsh pieces. We look forward to hearing from you and sharing your special day. Mal Evans PRO

sport reports PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB
Sunday 30th July saw our annual ‘Round the Bay Swim’, and 40 brave souls tackled the full distance, with a further 6 doing the short course. The rough seas made for challenging conditions, with a heavy swell making it difficult for competitors to see the marker buoys. Luckily, there were a good number of Club members providing safety cover, which gave a lot of reassurance to the swimmers as well as helping with directions! Category winners were as follows: Long course Senior Male - 1st Andrew O’Leary, 2nd Dan Thomas, 3rd Jack Evans. Male Masters - 1st David Murray (Overall winner), 2nd Thomas Guttridge, 3rd Simon Mcduff. Junior Male - 1st Dylan Wisden, 2nd Osian Pinnemore, 3rd Thomas Jones. Senior Female - 1st Gemma Roche-Clarke, 2nd Hannah Parry. Masters Female - 1st Vicky Jones, 2nd Andrea Pinnemore, 3rd Liz Vaughan. Short course Masters Male - 1st Jeff Thomas, 2nd Mario Rabarotti. Female Masters - 1st Paula Wiltford, 2nd Marnie Muir, 3rd Rosemary Jones. Junior - 1st Max Slaughter. Congratulations to all the finishers - see you next year! The weekend was topped off by a kind donation of £200 from The Globe Inn’s quiz night. Thank you so much for your generosity. It is much appreciated. Phil Protheroe www.plgc.org.uk
shoot in the park three times a week during the summer and once a week during the winter in the Tondu Cricket Club indoor training building. We hold several competitions during the year with many trophies to be won. We have recently held ‘have a go’ sessions in Margam Park during the school holidays; perhaps some readers did have a go. We offer initial training for beginners and charge an annual fee allowing members to shoot as many times as they want at no extra charge. Newly qualified members can use club equipment for up to three months until they are able to acquire their own. We are a friendly club where members will offer encouragement and advice. Porthcawl Rugby Club Under 8s team put their own twist on ‘School of Rock’ with ‘School of Ruck!’ at this years town carnival. The day was great fun for the players and families of our team. We are very proud at what everyone achieved in such a short space of time, working together and really encompassing the Rugby community spirit. Special thanks must go to Ozzie the Osprey and his handler, and to Ospreys in the Community for supporting us on the float! Ahead of another busy season we will have hosted both Llanharan RFC and Gorseinon RFC Under 8s teams for two pre-season friendly fixtures at the end of August. We are also very grateful to our new 2017/18 season sponsors, ‘Porters Estate Agent’s,’ and look forward to launching our new kit at the start of the new Rugby season.
