new bus station nottage traffic
Dear Editor, Having resided in Nottage for the last six years and witnessed daily the traffic problems which re-occur on the roads at either side of the village green, I’m amazed that simple, remedial improvements to ease the traffic problems have not been implemented. There are four roads in/out of Nottage village. These are: • Heol-y-Capel (fronting the Rose & Crown public house); • Ty Canol (passes rear entrance of the Farmers Arms); • Lougher Row (fronting the Farmers Arms and to the rear of the Swan Inn); and • West Road. My apologies for using the pubs as landmarks but they are well known to all and make for easier geographical visualisation. My suggestions to improve matters are as follows: • Make Heol-y-Capel one way eastwards (when proceeding, the Rose & Crown will be on one’s left) • Make Ty Canol one way westwards (when proceeding,
the village green will be on your right) • Lougher Row and West Road can either be kept as they are, i.e. for two way traffic, or both could also be made one way, mirroring Ty Canol and Heoly-Capel (one eastwards, one westwards). Current problems such as blocked roads due to dray lorries and refuse lorries would be eased as there would be another road to use as a bypass. Reversing (the most exasperating and common occurrence), due to encountering traffic head on, would become a thing of the past. The ‘blind’ corner when entering West Road from Heol-y-Capel (in front of the hairdressers) would no longer be an extremely dangerous undertaking. I would imagine the residents of the four roads concerned may be supportive of these changes as it would surely reduce the risk of their parked vehicles coming into contact with moving, two way traffic. It would be of interest to gauge the feelings of the Nottage public, especially the residents living within the four roads involved, to see if my ideas might be an improvement or indeed viable. t eMlyn-Jones
Porthcawl
Dear Editor, It is incredible that Porthcawl is the only town in the borough not possessing a bus station. The problem could be solved as the result of the regeneration plans whereby it is proposed a new larger surgery be built, at the request of the doctors, on the opposite side of the existing one. As a consequence, the present surgery would be obsolete and vacant and would make a perfect building to be converted into a bus station. It has plenty of room to extend the waiting area and to add extra toilets. It is conveniently sited for the John Street shoppers. Bus passengers, both local and visitors, would have a pleasant and comfortable waiting room which would be a boon, especially during the winter months. In addition, the Information Centre in John Street could be transferred to this building as it possesses all the facilities that they would require with plenty of parking spaces at the rear of the building. The bus station project is made possible by the plans to reduce the large roundabout opposite the surgery to a quarter of its present size, resulting in the road being double the width. This would allow a three bus lane to be constructed along the entire front of the surgery. It would be necessary
to remove part of the railings. This bus layby would have the same spaces now provided at the Stoneleigh bus stops which caters for all the present buses arriving in Porthcawl. The big advantage of a bus station sited at this spot is the important factor that it allows the busses to exit directly out of Porthcawl without entering the town centre, such as the 63 Cornelly bus exiting and entering via the Portway road. The sensational result would be that the service buses would no longer be travelling through the town. Lias Road/ Fenton Place and South Road would be completely free of service busses. The only exception would be the 61 Nottage which would continue to travel its usual route through town. The only difference is that passengers would be boarding at the new bus station and the unsightly bus shelters at the Co-op and Stoneleigh would be dismantled. Since service buses would no longer be stopping outside the bus stop at the Co-op, the hazards and danger to motorists would finally be removed. Preventing buses travelling through town would greatly minimise the wear and tear of the roads. What a wonderful benefit this would be to the people of Porthcawl and visitors. John Jenkins

Fairtrade Dear Editor, I am sure we are all proud to see Porthcawl proclaimed as a Fairtrade Town. Congratulations to all our business owners, but it needs Fairtrade shoppers too. It was the women of Britain who turned the tide for William Wilberforce’s 30 year campaign against slavery, by refusing to buy sugar because the sugar plantations were run on slave labour. Sadly, slavery still exists, though in other forms. Nobody
is asking us to give up sugar, or anything else, but just to spend a little longer in the aisles, looking for Fairtrade products. It may mean giving up our favourite brand, but surely that is worth it to know that it makes a difference to a girl of being able to get an education and thus escape prostitution, or a woman struggling to feed her family being given a fair wage. Let’s all do our best to make Porthcawl a Fairtrade Town. Pauline Lewis

Bridgend family Dear Editor, I am trying to find relations of a Bridgend family, Beatrice Mary and Arthur John Cook. They had three daughters, Daphne, Stella and Grace and one son Dennis. Here is a photo of Dennis and his bride Laura or Lorna. They had a daughter Annette. The other photo is of Davina, daughter of Stella or Grace. I have some old photos, and writings belonging to Beatrice, which I thought they might like. E A Alcock

Fairtrade Dear Editor, We must congratulate the powers that be in Porthcawl for making a great job of the coastal pathway up towards the Rest and particularly onwards to Sker. Sadly irresponsible dog owners are allowing their animals to foul this pathway as many others! We did notice signs on the entrance gate indicating “NO DOGS ALLOWED” and “NO CYCLING” but both were extremely small. A little lad noticed the sign and pointed it out to his parents with a very large dog
indeed. They proceeded to ignore him and the sign. There is certainly not enough room for large dogs to pass pedestrians (who are afraid of dogs), disabled persons in wheelchairs and mothers with pushchairs etc. and not enough room for cyclists which we also saw. Perhaps larger signs could be fixed with an appropriate fine for failing to comply! Is it not time that licence fees for dogs (size and number) should be compulsory for all dog owners? NO! Not In My Name
Dear Editor, The Nation Speaks ‘NO! Not In My Name’ petition was set up in May 2010 by pioneering British entrepreneur, health campaigner and freedom fighter Dounne Alexander MBE FRSA to challenge the European Food Supplements Directive which legalised the removal of thousands of beneficial natural herbs, traditional herbal remedies, nutritional supplements and health products from stores throughout the UK and Europe. In addition, the potency of those that remain has been drastically reduced, making them less effective. The Directive also threatens similar ‘natural health products’, cultural foods and indigenous remedies from non-European countries (such as Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and elsewhere) from entering UK and European markets. Thus, threatening the survival of small to medium-
sized health businesses, practitioners and even more worrying, the health, rights and freedom of choice of UK and European citizens. However, since the Directive was fully implemented in April 2011, Dounne has updated the petition to reiterate a far more ‘evil’ global plan, directly connected with the European Union and world Governments; to impose the same threats on the entire global population. Unfortunately, the UK and EU parliaments previously tried to suppress this information as being misleading and scaremongering but the truth is now evident. Therefore, with the support of other peaceful advocates around the world, Dounne is now on a quest to alert, awaken and empower UK, European and global citizens; to take back control and safeguard our future. For this reason, she has not only updated THE NATION SPEAKS petition but also incorporated a global petition called (GLOBAL VOICES UNITE) to bring the world together in collective opposition against the laws. west Park Primary school The basketball and rounders season is going well and inter school fixtures have been taking place. Congratulations to the cross country team who again finished the season strongly at the Cynffig race. Some of our swimmers and runners will be attending the Tata Kids of Steel Triathlon in Swansea to enjoy the experience of this fun event. The Great West Park Kilimanjaro Challenge will be taking place this month, where both infant and junior pupils will attempt to emulate the ascent to altitude of Tim Velinmanjaro in 2012 – 7.37 miles! It’s been a busy term for Year 6 who will be leaving us soon.
nottage news The number of Fairtrade schools in Bridgend is on the increase, with a number of schools hoping to achieve the status by the end of this academic year. During Fairtrade Fortnight, the Sustainable Development Team invited the Fairtrade Committee from Nottage Primary to visit Bridgend County Borough Council to inform Members about their Fairtrade work, especially their commitment to Fairtrade cotton. Ten pupils went along to the Civic Offices and gave a presentation in the Council Chamber. Members of the committee had written a Fairtrade song, which was
They have experienced lots of transition including Science, Design Technology and MFL. They also visited Porthcawl Comprehensive School for a full day of transition. May was a time of sadness in West Park as Lisa, one of our younger members of teaching staff, lost her battle with leukaemia. Mrs Lisa Pugh was our language support and PPA teacher and taught many of the children throughout the school. She will be warmly remembered by everyone as a teacher who always wanted the best for her pupils and someone who always had kind words and a friendly smile for everyone. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with her family during this time. r dennis & J Mainwaring
excellent. Those attending were ’wowed’ by the performance! The Nottage Fairtrade Committee are now hoping to work with a local rock club to put music to the song and possibly even record it! Nottage Primary is also one of the first schools in Bridgend to now offer Fairtrade uniforms. Uptake has been extremely high. The Porthcawl Fairtrade Steering Group are working with all the schools in Porthcawl to encourage them to purchase Fairtrade uniforms. The Year 2 members of the Fairtrade Committee showed those attending the council event their Fairtrade uniforms. sue o’halloran

corneli Primary school support sports relief! Year 5 pupils at Corneli Primary School worked out how many laps of our school yard pupils would need to go round to walk/run a mile in aid of Sports Relief -11 laps in total! All teachers, support staff and pupils including the playgroup children completed the mile in aid of Sports Relief. That’s 315 miles! Children donated 50p and wore their favourite sports kits to school. The school sold over 250 Sports Relief sweatbands too and in total the school raised
£489.80. Children enjoyed learning about how their money raised would help children in the UK and also in developing countries around the world. A very successful and enjoyable day! Miss Garlick, PE Coordinator, was extremely proud of the effort and enthusiasm made by pupils and staff. The children benefited from learning about the importance of charities working to improve the wellbeing of children like themselves in the UK and around the world. Pupils also developed their understanding of the importance of active life styles and its benefits. sue Jones

council makes a splash at careers event Bridgend County Borough Council’s Sports and Physical Activity department has been providing students with guidance on career pathways into sport and recreation, at a recent Learning Pathways 14-19 event. Sports staff were on hand to answer questions about the minimum qualifications required to become lifeguards and fitness instructors and provide information regarding work experience placements. Learning Pathways 14-19 is a distinct approach being taken in Wales to transform the way
in which young people are educated. It addresses the need for a flexible and balanced approach to the education of 14-19 year olds, focusing on the development of skills which help them to achieve their potential. As part of the event, the department held a 500 metre rowing challenge. Taylor Robinson was fastest on the rowing machine in the girls competition, while Cole Lewis and Chris Cooper were joint winners in the boys category. news from st John’s school The end of the spring term was a busy time for all at St John’s. Activities included Year 1 pupils and their teacher dressing up for, and enjoying a medieval day as part of their history project, and on the sporting front pupils across the school taking part in House football and netball matches, and several classes experiencing a session of Krav Maga self defence. On the last day of term the younger children paraded in their fantastic Easter hats and were visited by the Easter Bunny! During the Easter holidays a large group
newton Primary Well, April was just as busy as March! Highlight of the month must be the surprise visit from The Blims who came into school just before the Wales match and who performed for us their very popular ‘Side Steps and Side Burns’ – I don’t know who was more excited – the children or the staff! Team Newton continue to support us with their very popular cake sales and they also organised a most successful Easter disco at the end of term – thank you, everyone. Talking of Easter, huge thanks to all of you who made Easter bonnets for our Easter parade – it was lovely to see so many

April’s calendar is also looking very busy with visits by members of Porthcawl Cricket Club who are encouraging Year 4 to try out the game. The Bike-It Crew also will be coming in to encourage safety on our roads – they must be very pleased with the number of children who are now cycling to school. We are so grateful for the support of different organisations who give up their time and expertise to encourage our children. gill gore

We are all looking forward to the exciting challenges of the new term. As ever this is the most busy of terms as the school gears up for examinations. This month pupils from Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 will sit internal and external examinations. With over half of our pupils preparing thoroughly there is much going on. We would like to thank those teachers who gave of their free time to offer extra help at the Easter revision school. It was so rewarding to see our pupils and teachers
Cynffig news This year has seen the school gain distinction in a number of engineering competitions. Geraint Sibley, Hannah Jenkins, Ross Cooper and Catrin Davies recently went to Birmingham to represent the school and the area in the UK Young Engineer of the Year awards. Congratulations to our Year 12 team who fought off competition from 78 other schools to lift the title of Best Engineering Design in conjunction with Sony Manufacturing UK. This team comprised of Lauren Browning, Kelly Charles, David Edwards, Bradley Harris and Shawnee Wood. We must say a huge thank you to Sony and Mr Warren James who has worked with both teams In addition pupils from the sixth form represented us in the
working so hard during their holidays. School life is not all work and no play. Our pupils have just returned safely from Disneyland Paris, Zell am See (skiing) and California. All have had a wonderful experience and thoroughly enjoyed themselves; travel certainly broadens the mind. A particular vote of thanks goes to Mrs D. Evans (Biology) who has led her fourth and last tour of California. Finally we look forward to meeting our new entrants for September 2012 at the school’s transition day which is to be held on 28th June 2012. This, together with the uniform evening and transition disco on 9th July 2012, should prepare our youngsters for their new venture. K DYKES

Young Enterprise competition, they did incredibly well with Lauren Browning picking up an individual award for Best Overall contribution to the team enterprise. Musically the school continues to go from strength to strength and pupils can now benefit from vocal training with Mrs Addicott. David Morris was successful in our Cynffig’s Got Talent competition closely followed by Joe Anderson on acoustic guitar and Anna Wintle vocals as runners up. In the recent Britain’s Got Talent, Cynffig was represented by Joe Jones who is in Year 13 and a former pupil Adam Cullen as part of the Only Boys Aloud choir. I am sure we will see more of this choir in the future. SUE DAVIES

Children & young people I’ve really enjoyed the privilege of being responsible for the children and young people of Bridgend County Borough over the last four years. In that time, I’ve been able to visit nearly every school in the area at least once, and I’m proud to have been instrumental in the opening of our various new and refurbished schools. Although I am a retired teacher and lecturer, the many teachers, pupils, headteachers, school governors and parents whom I have met have all contributed something to my understanding of the challenges and rewards that exist within our
Family Information Service Fun Day
Our annual Fun Day took place at Bridgend Recreation Centre recently. We chose an ‘Olympic’ theme for this year’s event so stand holders along with many of the children dressed in their sports gear to add to the fun. Lee Jukes from Bridge FM opened the Fun Day, he introduced the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marlene Thomas who welcomed the children and their families to the event. As Bridge FM were broadcasting live Lee was soon playing requests and interviewing stand holders.

education system. As a member of the Fostering Panel, I have been impressed and moved by the level of dedication that our foster carers are giving to local children, and I am particularly happy to have been able to ensure the continued provision of the Griffin Park Youth Centre in Porthcawl. Other highlights have included anti-bullying events, Halloween parties at Heronsbridge, Achievement Award events for our looked-after children, youth talent shows, and of course the opportunity to take up the concerns of local parents and residents. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the young people I have had the honour of representing. CLLR ALANA DAVIES

The children took part in art and craft activities making medals and Olympic torches, had their faces painted, practiced their driving skills with the Krazy Karts and had fun on the bouncy castles. New for this year the children could take part in sport activities provided by the council’s Active Young People’s department, there was a ‘baby sign’ taster session as well as an old favourite, the drumming workshop and much more. It is estimated that over 2,000 visited the event. The feedback from our evaluation forms and games that encouraged even the very young children to give us their views show that the day was a great success. higher bus fares and fewer buses Welsh Labour Government funding cuts to bus companies across Wales could threaten bus services in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend and will force fares to increase. The 20% cut to bus fuel subsidies were announced without sufficient notice for bus companies to prepare and
charity giving Turning long-held assumptions upside down and looking at a problem from a different perspective can reap real benefits. Over ten years ago, the V.O.I.C.E. Shopping Service in Porthcawl did just that. The project is managed through the Trinity Care Club based at Trinity Church in Porthcawl
housing Social exclusion charity Caer Glas and the Housing Options team of Bridgend County Borough Council have launched a new service to help residents who are experiencing housing problems due to financial difficulties. The Bridgend Debt Advice Link is available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
Porthcawl heritage initiative Exciting new proposals are being developed for the launch of a townscape heritage initiative in Porthcawl. Bridgend County Borough Council has submitted an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for an initial amount of £532,000 to set up the scheme,
without consulting two key, publicly-funded organisations, Public Transport Users’ Committee (PTUC) for Wales, which is tasked with giving ministers advice about “strategic issues” relating to public transport, and Bus Users UK Cymru, whose role includes advising ministers on “strategic and technical developments” relating to buses. I am particularly critical of the cut in subsidy as the Welsh Labour government is
continuing to splash out £1.6 million a year on an air link between Cardiff and Anglesey, which works out at £160 per passenger. This contrasts with the bus fuel subsidy, which comes in at £2 a head for the 114 million people using Welsh buses each year. Welsh Labour Government needs to spend public money more wisely. Welsh Liberal Democrats believe that rather than wasting over £1.6 million
each year on an air service that only a handful of people use, the money should be used to support more sustainable transport methods that can benefit everybody.
and completely reverses our understanding of charity. Instead of being the receivers of assistance, learning disabled adults are encouraged to be givers of help. As part of a team with the support of a project worker, volunteers do a weekly shop on behalf of housebound individuals living in the Porthcawl area. They collect a list, go shopping, deliver the goods and put them away if required. The
activity is mutually beneficial. The volunteers become contributing and valued citizens, developing social and money management skills. Those who receive the service benefit from weekly contact and building friendships with the volunteers. The secret of its success is the reciprocal nature of the service and emphasis it gives to valuing all groups in our society. The Shopping Service is cur-
rently looking for new clients and would love to hear from anyone who might benefit from the free service. For more information, please contact 01656 78210.
Civic Offices in Angel Street, Bridgend. Funded by the Welsh Government, the service provides debt advisers who can work with people and help them get their finances back on track, prioritise their debts and budget accurately. The advisers can also liaise with creditors to negotiate affordable payment plans and provide advice about eligible benefits.
I believe that this service will be of particular help to people who have been affected by recent changes to the housing benefits system as since January, single people under the age of 35 have been entitled to housing benefit at a reduced ‘shared accommodation rate’. This is affecting many single people who are living in privately rented self-contained accommodation, so not only
will this service enable residents to organise their finances and get their lives back on track, it will also help them avoid falling deeper into debt or even losing their homes.
which will focus on the town’s harbour, breakwater and historic square. If the funding bid is successful, the initiative will enable key historic buildings in the area to be repaired and restored to their former architectural glory. This would include the Jennings building, which would offer a flagship project designed to attract developers and occupiers.
The scheme would also contribute towards public realm enhancements and help to identify sustainable new uses for vacant buildings as part of the wider Porthcawl Regeneration Strategy. With the total first phase cost of the Porthcawl townscape heritage initiative estimated to be £1.45m, the proposals are currently being considered by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
If successful, the council hopes that the scheme could begin in 2013 and will follow the success of similar townscape heritage initiatives already running in Bridgend and Maesteg.

Fighting cyber bullying The Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Keith Towler, recently met with over 100 delegates from Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot county boroughs to discuss the serious and ever-growing problem of cyber bullying amongst young people. Through deliberate, repeated and hostile attacks through social networking sites, text or email, an ever increasing number of young people have been affected by cyber bullying. Delegates had the opportunity to find out why a bully bullies and how to practically support and promote wellbeing amongst young victims. Janette Kearn, Chief Executive of Mental

Pet therapy is especially important to our residents and even better our support workers brought in their young children to interact with the residents making this an especially fun activity. We are planning to hold a big lunch here at the home on Saturday June 3rd 2012 and

We would also like to take this opportunity to give a huge thank you to Bracey’s Builders Merchants, who have so generously donated paving slabs, which have enabled us to have a lovely sitting area outside the shop, along with the timber posts that have enabled us to re-erect our Rest sign. Lastly a big thank you to Me & Thee Crafts for allowing us to display and sell their colourful plaques and original driftwood signs on our café walls. They make a perfect gift and are a must to see. For more details of the above, and our amazing holiday offers throughout May, just give us a call.
This month I would like to draw your attention to the Kenfig Archaeological Trust, an exciting new venture that has been created to explore the history and archaeology of our area. With guidance from archaeologist Mark Yorwerth Middleton, the Kenfig Archaeological Trust aims to dig a series of one metre square test pits in and around Kenfig, including the local villages. And the Trust is looking for your help. If you would like to become involved in the digging of these test pits – don’t worry if you have no experience or knowledge of archaeology because professional guidance will be given – then you can contact the Trust either by email, kenfig@live.co.uk, or you can join the Facebook group www.facebook.com/groups/ kenfig.archaeology The Kenfig Archaeological
Trust is also looking for information and your local knowledge could be vital in helping the Trust uncover more about our past. If you know of any potential sites where you think a test pit might reveal something of archaeological value or if you have stumbled across any archaeological or historical items while out walking or on your local travels then please contact the Trust via the email address or the Facebook group listed above or by telephone, 07517227520. You can also follow the Trust’s activities by joining the Facebook group. We have thousands of years of history beneath our feet and every day we walk across that history. The Kenfig Archaeological Trust is a community project and so this is your chance to become involved in discovering more about your ancestors and our past. Mansel Jones

we would like to invite our neighbours in Penylan Avenue to come and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with us. We are very fortunate to have a ladies choir coming in that afternoon to entertain our residents and guests. Our residents have been on various trips through the month from Cafe Remo in Port Talbot for ice cream to the Atlantic, Grove and Fairways. We are planning a trip to Margam Park in May where our residents will have a packed lunch picnic; we will just hope for good weather. Should you require a tour of the home please do not hesitate to contact us on 01656 785311. reBecca tiMMs Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI)
life with the Porthcawl lions
First and most importantly this month, do not forget Porthcawl Lions annual May Fayre on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May, which this year is being held in the grounds of All Saints Church, Victoria Avenue. The fayre will be opened at 11am by Porthcawl Mayor, Councillor Barbara Stubbs and there will be plenty to interest everyone, including a variety of stalls, games, refreshments and an entertainment arena. As well as displays in the arena there will be two competitions, a best kept pets competition and a ‘Princess and Pirates’ fancy dress for the children.
Entrance is only 50p per person and free for children accompanied by an adult. (Sorry, there are no facilities for car parking on the site.) Having recovered from the May Fayre, on Friday 25th May members will be holding a coffee morning in Trinity Church to raise money to send competitors to the Bob Cooke Games (a Lion Run event for local disabled young people). Then there is the usual Book Sale at The Seabank on the weekend of May 26th and 27th. Doors open at 10am and car parking and entrance are free. Also, there is still time to enter a team of four or sponsor a hole in Porthcawl Lions Golf Day at The Grove Golf Club on Friday June 8th. The fee includes coffee and a buffet lunch and all profits will be going to Glaze and the Welsh Air Ambulance. John cosson
sker wi The April meeting of Sker WI was held recently in St David’s Church hall, Nottage. The president Nina Charlesworth welcomed the members present. Final arrangements were made for the forthcoming birthday meal at the Rest and the Link meeting in North Cornelly. The speaker for the evening was Mr Mike Wilcock who gave a very informative talk on ‘Life in the Fashion Business’. Mr Wilcock had worked in the business for 35 years with C&A, starting as a train-
ee in Manchester and working his way up to a store manager in Cardiff and then Swansea. He moved to various stores in the North of England before coming to South Wales. The amount of shoplifting that occurred cost the company thousands of pounds. The firm was a Dutch company and had 120 store in the UK which all closed in 2001. The company is still trading abroad and has 1,400 stores worldwide. The next meeting is on 10th May when the resolutions will be discussed, followed by social time. ann viPond

through christian eyes Revival! One of the things that very often happens in Revival is a fresh understanding of the grace of God. The grace of God simply means that we cannot do anything to earn God’s love or forgiveness, but must receive it as a gift, by faith. This is how we get our initial contact with God, and it must also be the ongoing process of things in regards to our relationship with God. One of the marvellous things about this is that it goes against
anyone’s religious efforts to justify themselves before God. No amount of good works will ever be enough to gain a relationship with God and a place in heaven. That is good news, because that takes the pressure off me to be good enough. We must simply respond by faith, to what Jesus has done on the cross, and then as God changes us from the inside out, we live a life that is God’s best for us. My prayer is that we all (Christians and non-Christians alike) understand more and more the wonderful grace of God, and His free gift of salvation. Respond and see how His love changes you! neil harvey

Porthcawl townswomen’s guild A warm welcome was given by our chairman Dee Richardson and a minute silence was held in memory of one of our well loved and sadly missed member Rene Threasher. Donations are to be made to Save the Children charity and also to the RAF Benevolent Fund in her memory. The plans are coming along for the visit of the ladies from our twin guild from Mansfield in May. Also our second visit to the police museum will take place next Wednesday. Great interest is shown in the visit to Dewstow Gardens so we are
hoping for the sun to shine on us that day. Our speaker was Mr David Allen and he whisked us all off to the base camp of Mount Everest. The scenery was amazing and the people so welcoming to the travellers, despite the hardship of their daily life they all looked very happy. It was very interesting and different from our imagination of Everest. Our next meeting will be on 9th May at All Saints Church hall at 2pm where we will be having a bring and buy sale. Our speaker will be Mrs Pamela Robson and the title of her speech will be Dial ‘O’ for the Operator. All will be made very welcome. Freda rodger
We have had a very busy month here at Jemima’s Place. With lots of animals being brought in and also re-homed to new families, along with rescuing cows, reptiles and a number of stray dogs and ferrets. We have some new volunteers that are doing a great job and some new foster families too. Sadly, three of our older long-term residents passed away this month, but at least they had some quality time whilst they were with us. We have just linked up as a Trust with Pets at Home, and were having our first open day with them shortly, and our patron from Downton Abbey, Lesley Nicol, will be attending.

This month our featured animals are Shimmer and Sky. They are two lovely lion head female rabbits. They are nearly a year old and must be re-homed together. They like to be handled, love to hop out in the garden and their favourite things are carrot tops. For more information on them or any of our other animals call us at 0800 014 8332. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us with the animals care, foster families for temporary care. Billions of planets around Red Dwarfs A new result from the HARPS planet-finding telescope in Chile shows that rocky planets not much bigger than Earth are very common in the habitable zones around faint red dwarf stars. Astronomers estimate that there are tens of billions of such planets in the Milky Way galaxy alone, and probably about one hundred in the Sun’s immediate neighbourhood. Because red dwarfs are so common - there are about 160 billion of them in the Milky Way - this leads us to the astonishing result that

there are tens of billions of these planets in our galaxy alone. As there are many red dwarf stars close to the sun, there are about one hundred Earth-type planets orbiting stars in the neighbourhood of the sun at distances less than about 30 light-years. The habitable zone around a red dwarf, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on the surface, is much closer to the star than the Earth is to the sun, but red dwarfs are known to be subject to stellar eruptions or flares, which may bathe the planet in X-rays or ultraviolet radiation, and which may make life there less likely. Bill is also chairman of the Royal Welsh Veterans association at the Bridgend branch and, like his grandson, is passionate about helping our veterans of the forces. Shane is due to visit Canada with the Army very soon, but will continue to call into the charity’s office from time to time, before doing his upcoming tour of Afghanistan in 2013. A busy month for the Friends of Morfa

Y Cefn Gwyrdd It has been all action at Cefn Junction Signal Box recently. Arrangements have been made for several visits by historical groups and another diesel (actually three – one pulling and two in reserve at the back) passed by carrying 15 coaches full of enthusiasts from Crewe. At present Y Cefn Gwyrdd is looking at various aspects of the Dyffryn Llynfi Porthcawl horsedrawn railway which ran from Maesteg, past Coytrahen and Tondu, Kenfig Hill, Pyle, Corneli and Porthcawl and we are searching for folk songs (both English and Welsh, traditional and contemporary) which are associated with
ture competition, a quiz night and town centre leafleting. On 5th May the All Wales Coastal Path is officially opened. Our group supports this initiative completely, however we will make it clear that any attempt by Tata Steel to use this as a pretext for diverting the public away from Morfa Beach is unacceptable. The AWCP is meant to improve access to the coast, not remove it. We meet on the first Monday of the month at the Twelve Knights Hotel, Margam at 7.30pm. However, due to the bank holiday, this month’s meeting is on 14th May. We are keen to make contact with organisations representing groups who use the beach: horse-riders, sea-anglers, surfers, ramblers, etc. In the event of a public enquiry, their input would be very valuable. Find Save Morfa Beach on Facebook and join us. All supporters welcome. DR CHARLES SMITH
these particular areas. During the summer months we shall be holding another Furnace Festival, two years after a very memorable concert with Kenfig Hill Male Choir which was held in the ironworks . The purpose of the festival is to make people more aware of Cefn’s wonderful industrial heritage which remains a neglected secret to many. This year we shall present an ambitious programme of walks (one of course centred on John Bedford’s furnace), an outdoor comedy, an art exhibition in the Signal Box entitled “Wood” and an ambitious programme of live music. Government says it is vital that children should have contact with both parties after divorce or separation One of the main concerns of a party leaving a marriage or relationship is how often they are likely to see their child or children after the relationship has ended and they have moved out of the family home. In February 2012 the Government published its response to the Norgrove review of the family justice system. The Government intends to make it clear that it is vital that children continue their relationship with both parents after a separation or divorce, unless the behaviour of one of the parents gives rise to concerns about their safety or welfare. This has always been the position of the court when dealing with applications for contact by the non-resident parent. However this recent response from the Government has reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that contact takes place between the children and the non-resident parent. The approach of the court is governed by the Children Act 1989 which states that there
is a presumption of contact. Whilst this approach is normally in the best interests of the child, this is not always possible as there may be real concerns about safety or welfare that mean contact should be supervised or should not take place at all. This may require an application being made to the court and a CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service) Officer will become involved who will also investigate the concerns and make recommendations to the court about contact. The Government has also pledged to provide further monetary assistance for mediation services which encourages parents to discuss any issues they have amicably and with help avoid the need for court action. Separation or divorce is very emotive and the children can often be forgotten when the parents try to deal with their own emotions following the breakup. As such RLE Law is launching its new free clinic which we hope will benefit all parties at such a difficult time. The family clinic will take place at our Bridgend office every Wednesday from 2pm until 6pm and no appointment is necessary. MADELINE RAND

life cover cheapest ever – but prices about to increase!
It’s a true fact that for those buying life assurance at the moment, it’s the cheapest it’s ever been, due largely to the hugely competitive market and it’s a recognised fact that the UK has the most competitive life assurance market in the world. A typical policy now can cost vastly less than it did 15 years ago, however that’s all about to change from January of next year. A new directive issued by the European Parliament will prohibit life assurance companies from charging differing rates for men and women on grounds of gender and they will have to adopt unisex rates. What this effectively means is that men and women will pay the same standard rates for cover. Given that men already pay more than women, the rates for women will increase to bring them into line. It is
reckoned that women will pay as much as 30% more for their cover from next January compared with current costs, so acting now to secure cheaper cover is very sensible indeed. At Cambria Financial we have access to the all the major insurers in the market, with the best available premiums. Give us a call on 01656 782545 and we’ll get the quotes for you. And there’s a huge bonus in store just for getting us to quote – everyone we quote for will go into our free draw for £50 of shopping vouchers of your choice. The more quotes we supply for you, the greater your chance of winning. Plus, if you recommend someone else to get quotes from us (make sure they tell us your recommended them) and they win, then we’ll give £25 in shopping vouchers to you as a thank you. For our over 50s clients, we have our specialist equity release service and pre-paid funeral plans, as well as exclusive access to the new Retirement Mortgage (10 years maximum, interest-only, so great for shorter term lending, where capital will be available later) so please call us on 01656 782545. stay healthy and pay less If you look after your health and wellbeing there is a fair chance that your life expectancy will be extended. There is likewise a fair chance that you are less likely to die or be diagnosed with a life threatening critical illness. Therefore, it makes sense that if you are less likely to suffer one of these illnesses or indeed die, that you should pay less for your life insurance or critical illness policy. Critical illness policies do not cover all illnesses and some illnesses need to be to a certain severity before they will pay out. Therefore it would be awful to be diagnosed with an illness only to find out that it is not to a great enough severity to merit a payout.
ian davies
paul fielding
That’s why we arrange policies that will pay out between 100% and 10% of the sum assured dependent on the severity of your illness. Therefore if you have an illness that only qualifies for a partial payout, let’s say 25% the remaining 75% will be paid if your condition deteriorates. Now that beats not being paid anything at all. If you add to that 50% off monthly gym membership with Virgin Active to encourage you to get fit and stay fit then it makes a compelling reason to review your protection needs. investment basics
of default, changes in interest rates or inflation affect bond prices.
With the rate of interest on bank deposits remaining low investors are increasingly turning to bonds and equities in search of higher returns. Before doing so it is important you understand the risks and characteristics of investing into these assets. This article is to give you a helpful overview of the two main asset classes, bonds and equities (shares).
what are eQuities?
what is a Bond?
Bonds are essentially an IOU from either a country (government bonds) or from a company (corporate bonds). In return for their money, the borrower typically agrees to pay the investor a specified rate of interest and repay the amount of the loan at the end of the pre-agreed period. When an investor buys a government or corporate bond, they typically lock into a fixed rate of interest but until the bond is redeemed, the capital value fluctuates with market movements. This differs from a bank or building society deposit account, where your capital is always fixed but your income may fluctuate with interest rates. Many factors, including the likelihood
Equities, also known as stocks or shares, are investments in a company listed on a stock exchange. When you buy an equity, you are in effect buying part ownership of that company and the value of your investment depends on the success of the company, the overall market conditions and general view of the shares held by other investors. The principal advantage of equity-based investments is that they give access to the growth potential of companies and have the potential of beating inflation over the long term. However they also carry greater risk. Over the shorter term, the value can go up or down significantly, making them volatile. This is why equities are normally viewed as a long-term investment, giving time to ride out the short-term ups and downs. The value of investments and any income from them will rise and fall and investors may not get back the full amount invested. Past performance is not a guide to future returns. sheridan Jones One Life Financial, b01656 785700

Now the weather and ground is warmer the pests are back. Unless you are a Buddhist, now is the time to wage war on slugs (ugh!) and snails. They love tulips and delicacies like the new shoots of delphiniums (with a hosta for pudding!). Use pet friendly slug pellets or drench with liquid slug killer to exterminate them below the surface.
Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off, what you do with them is up to you (I always throw mine into the field but I’m sure they’re homing snails!). The birds are your allies here; a few flat stones placed artfully round the garden help them to perfect their snail bashing technique! Dandelions too can be a real nuisance this time of year. If you can’t deal with them terminally at least chop their heads off before they set seed and double up. We have a coffee morning on 2nd June 10am - 12 pm in the Green Hall, also a quiz and social evening on 29th May 7.30 - 9.30pm – bring your own nibbles and drinks and join in! Enjoy your time in the garden and remember all gardeners learn by trowel and error!

driveway, path and patio solutions Do you remember the terrible cold spell a couple of years ago? Inches of snow and ice building up on your driveway and then wet spring weather with moss and weeds growing everywhere. It’s hard to forget… At Resindrives.co.uk we have the ultimate driveway, path and patio solutions to take away those headaches. Our product is perfect for all British weather has to throw at us. It has the strength and durability of concrete, and be laid directly over your existing driveway with minimum disruption.
The resin drive is laid in one continuous layer so that it eliminates weeds and best of all the product is fully porous, so water simply drains through the surface, leaving no puddles, moss or torrents of water. Mr. Watson said: “The snow simply brushes off the surface”. Resin drives have an extremely high grip surface, which feels great under foot. Mapping the feet
Reflexology is an ancient complementary therapy using pressure applied to the feet or hands, with its principal aim of enabling the body to balance and heal itself. It is not only enjoyed as a relaxing therapy but is rapidly gaining a place in modern healthcare and is fast becoming a treatment of choice to complement traditional

Stimulating these nerve endings brings about the relaxation response via the parasympathetic nervous system. The foot and hand maps out your body parts so for instance you big toe or thumb represents your head, and if you have a headache for instance applying pressure to the affected part will provide instant relief. For each person the application and the effect of reflexology is unique. You do not need to be unwell to benefit from reflexology, all clients undergoing a course of treatments comment that they find sleep patterns and energy levels are improved and tensions are eased. Believe it or not, we can still have fun and have a healthy lifestyle! But one factor frequently overlooked by many people is the importance of our oral health and dental hygiene: if the symptoms of dental disease are undiagnosed or ignored, this can have a detrimental effect on overall health. Most people know that maintaining good dental health into old age has many benefits. Those most important include comfort of the teeth and gums, the ability to enjoy food, and
Be ‘heart healthy’ and volunteer
Nation’s heart charity encourages Porthcawl locals to volunteer with BHF. With 98,000 people in Wales having had a heart attack at some point, and a further 98,000 suffering from angina, the nation’s heart charity is encouraging Porthcawl locals to volunteer and improve their wellbeing with BHF Cymru. This April sees the launch of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru’s ‘Be Heart Healthy and Volunteer’ campaign. Volunteers play a vital role in the work of BHF Cymru
a better appearance. Now, a recent study confirms that good dental health has another important benefit – it can add years to your life. Research has shown that there may be a possible association between gum disease and cardiovascular (heart) disease, strokes and diabetes, as well as premature and low birth weight babies. As further research continues into the nature of this association, good oral health should be seen as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping your mouth healthy is easy and just as important to your wellbeing as looking after your body. Going regularly for teeth cleaning and check-ups can be an easy way to supplement your already healthy, active lifestyle. Visits to the hygienist are included at no extra charge for our Denplan care patients. ann-Marie howells Bds

BHF Cymru has lots of different roles to suit the time people can give, from putting on a fundraising event to becoming campaigners that help to deliver better heart health services in their community. Any amount of time will really make a difference to the charity. Maisie with her two grandchildren
Porthcawl Stroke Club The club as enjoyed many events recently, one of which was an 80th birthday party at the Fairways Hotel in Porthcawl. Maisie Manley had a superb birthday party with at least a 150 guests. On each table was four bottles of red and white wine and the 80th birthday cake was a delight for all her special guests. The Porthcawl Ukulele band played on their four-stringed guitars nearly all afternoon, which was very jolly oo-koo-la-la! Most of the band was dressed in the Hawaiian style shirts, the ladies in the band looked great too. Oh-lala, what a party! We had an interesting talk
Ty Elis MBE celebration
l–r: Madeline Moon MP, Edwina White, David Parry Volunteer counsellors
Porthcawl Ukulele Band
The staff and trustees of Ty Elis (Porthcawl Counselling Service) gathered at the Fairways Hotel, Porthcawl, to celebrate their Director’s award of the MBE.
by Mr David Salter about the sending of post cards, going back a hundred years, the communication of the times gone by (which is still used by many). An excellent presentation, knowledgeable and quite funny on occasions, what people would write. In a way it’s a bit like Facebook, only hand written instead of electronically. Stan Stennett and his wife Betty joined us for lunch at the Rest Home and Stan cheered us up by playing the guitar and singing some old melodies, a good old sing song. Once again the Porthcawl Stroke Club would like to thank everyone who supports us, and don’t forget to get your blood pressure checked. Barbara Matthews
The award was given for Mrs Edwina White’s service to counselling. Dr David Parry, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, presided at the party and among those congratulating Mrs White was her long standing colleague, Mrs Madeline Moon MP, who as Mayor of Porthcawl in 1996, donated the original telephone and answering machine. The party enjoyed a buffet supper followed by the wonderful therapy of the Porthcawl Ukulele Band. The counselling service, which Mrs White was instrumental in setting up in 1995, is a charity which provides a much needed professional therapeutic service in the area and provides a service to the NHS. The work of Ty Elis is constantly growing but without the donations and support of local organisations and individuals, the devoted and hard-working volunteer staff would be unable to continue to deliver what our community desperately needs. Kay Foyle
Kidney Wales, Porthcawl branch The Porthcawl Branch of Kidney Wales would like to thank all those who supported their recent events. The money raised goes to helping transforming the lives of families in the local area and across Wales affected by kidney disease and renal failure. The Porthcawl branch of Kidney Wales has held two highly successful fundraising events this spring. The first event, a social evening at the Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court Bowls Club, saw a good crowd gathered for a silent auction with musical interlude. Once again those attending were very generous with their bids at the auction and all enjoyed
The importance of exercise
New research shows that when healthy but inactive men and women exercise even briefly, it produces an immediate change in their DNA – early genetic events readying your body for creating muscle strength and increased fat burning. When it comes to boosting metabolism, increasing muscle mass, and maximising fat burning, high intensity interval training has been identified
the musical interlude where Laurence Chilcott entertained by singing and playing the guitar. A buffet was provided by committee members and a total of £500 was raised as a result of a very enjoyable evening. The second fund raising event the Porthcawl Kidney Walk for Life attracted over 70 adult walkers plus children and dogs. The walk was started by Nicholas Lloyd, the latest person in Porthcawl to have a transplant after his mother Amanda donated a kidney to him last September. As in previous years the walkers were led by Alan Williams. When all the sponsor money has been collected around £2,000 will have been raised. Gail Ralph
as being one of the most effective. Previous research has shown that just 20 minutes of high intensity training, two to three times a week, can yield greater results than slow and steady conventional aerobics done five times a week. Exercise is like medicine, and should be ‘taken as prescribed’ to optimise your health. Time, frequency and intensity are three important variables to keep in mind when creating your fitness programme. And, while high intensity interval training is the most effective, you still need variety to reap maximum results. A well rounded fitness programme would include all of the following: aerobic, anaerobic (interval training), strength training, core exercises and stretching. Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

strange fruit Back in the eighties, my first job was working in a French-style restaurant making steak tartare to serve to paunchy gentlemen in loose ties. There were lots of rum babas, a few too many black Russians and lots of hollering. I survived on avocados and marie-rose sauce. The memory prompted a little laugh this week while watching Masterchef when Amanda Steadman said she ate avocadoes for days on the trot when she first tasted them. It reminded me there are variations of a recipe on websites and in cook books, a curiosity that had to be tried to prove its madness or genius. Chocolate avocado mousse. Dairy and processed sugar free, surely it couldn’t be right? Cacao and avocado were considered as stimulants by the ancient South American tribes, so I guess the combination comes from there. They were in some of the boxes this week, so if you haven’t made anything sensible with yours yet and they’ve turned a little ripe, give it a go and let us know what you think. It had mixed reactions here, varying from ‘love it’ to ‘chocolate + hand cream’. I think it depends on your hippy rating as to how much you like it. I’d still make guacamole any day of the week, but here it is…
chocolate + avocado Mousse ingredients:
• 2 ripe avocados • 25g good cocoa powder • 2 tbsp honey or agave syrup • a few drops vanilla extract • 1-2 tbsp cold water Method
Cut the avocado in half lengthways and remove the stone. Scoop out the flesh with a teaspoon and put in a blender or food processor. Add the cocoa, honey or syrup and vanilla. Blitz until smooth. Add just enough water and blitz again until you have a smooth and creamy mixture. Taste, adding a touch more syrup or honey if needed. Serve with very thinly sliced pineapple, oranges or pink grapefruit. This makes about 5-6 ice cream scoops, so depending on how greedy you are, serves 2-4. It is quite rich, so one scoop is enough.

We are proud to announce that Mark Evans has taken over as our new head chef. Mark is a young enthusiastic and ambitious chef who enjoys challenging people’s preconceptions of food. While we trust that the high standards already in place will be maintained, we are also looking forward very much to the fresh approach mark brings to his menu and food. Originally from Newport, Gwent his training and background have taken him
across South Wales. He has designed and set up a number of prestigious restaurant kitchens in and around Cardiff and hopes to establish a close relationship and rapport with our customers. He is certainly always ready to talk about food to whoever will listen(!)

April 2012
SINS OF THE FATHER by Jeffrey Archer Jeffrey Archer continues the engrossing story started in Only Time will Tell. On arrival in New York 1939, Tom Bradshaw is arrested for first degree murder. When Sefton Jelks, a top Manhattan lawyer, offers his services for nothing, penniless Tom has little choice but to accept his assurance of a lighter sentence. After Tom is tried, found guilty and sentenced, Jelks disappears, and the only way for Tom to prove his innocence would be to reveal his true identity – something that he has sworn never to do in order to protect the woman he loves. Meanwhile, the young woman in question travels to New York, leaving their son behind in England, having decided she’ll do whatever it takes to find the man she was to marry – unwilling to believe that he died at sea. The only proof she has is a letter which has remained unopened on a mantelpiece in Bristol for over a year. elaine winstanley

the magic box I will put in the box, The front tooth of a Welsh Dragon, The smell of a freshly baked Welsh cake, And a thread of sheep’s wool. I will put in the box, One of the feathers from the Welsh logo, The calcium of a glass of milk, And a perfect petal of a daffodil.
wales My name is the roaring, racing, red land of music. Older than the Viking, older than the red dragon, Older than the world itself. My family are the woolly white sheep and the green island of magic. I watch my people and see my life passing by as I go on. I get angry when I feel the dirty sick touch of poison. I feel happy when my flowers sing and sway in the breeze. I hold the green expensive tall hills in my hands. I love the smell of the leeks growing in my gardens and allotments. I hate the rotten heaps of rubbish bins. And the noise of rugby crowds make me feel loved. I AM WALES!
I think I would cry, If they made me say goodbye To the beautiful country of Wales. With Snowdonia reaching the sky, Fluffy sheep running by. All in my beautiful Wales. The Welsh jerseys we wear, When we play rugby fair. All in my beautiful Wales. Our flag is the best, Better than the rest. All in my beautiful Wales. This country is great, Don’t leave it too late To visit my beautiful Wales. lowri Powis & saM Madock, age 7

My box is fashioned from the finest sheeps’ wool, with the Welsh dragon’s nails on the lid, With shiny gold on the corners, Its hinges are the finest Welsh grass. I shall take a stroll in my box, On the great Welsh beaches, Then walk up Snowdon, I look at the glorious view. aMy PhilliPs, age 11
I thought I loved you yesterday, But now I’m not so sure The memory of that day’s love Pales in today’s sunlit azure. I thought I loved you in the spring When love and life were new I was sure I could not feel A shred more love for you. I thought I loved you in the blaze of summer When our passions burned I felt no force on earth Could make my heart be turned. I thought I loved you when autumn’s veil Of melancholy fruits Spread tranquil days and moonlight nights Filled with love’s salutes. All faded now! For today I love you like n’er before, Far more than words can say; But I know that when tomorrow’s love dawns I will confess I thought I loved you, yesterday. John keylock

guilty love recipe to make wales Take the great Welsh language Stir in delightful Welsh folk dancing Add some perfect green grass in the fields Mix with old peaceful cottages Sprinkle the fields with lovely yellow daffodils Place the warm fruity delicious Welsh cakes on the table with a cup of tea Allow the National Anthem to be sung by the proud people of Wales Finally our proud Welsh flag blows in the wind. When everyone closed their hearts to me LOVE listened to my woes, tenderly. When humanity ignored fears passionately, LOVE obeyed, cherished desires quietly, calmly. When ignorance quashed my dignity, LOVE valued my heredity attentively. When nary a soul celebrated my feat, LOVE extolled me & glorified me, What a heart rending story! I wish to dwell in unending serenity, as He touched my inner feelings fondly I live to re-tell this LOVING tale forevermore, as my story reaches distant shores. aMooro wilson ayinBangya (wilson ‘thePoet’) Ghana

The choir has recently made two visits to Cardiff Bay, the first to perform on the Glanfa stage at the Millennium Centre, as part of the BBC and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG ) Music Nation Wales programme. This weekend of music extended around the UK with the aim of creating excitement and setting the scene in the run up to the 2012 international John williaMs festivals. The venue was perfect,
The party animal has been out and about again! Had a great time at the Swan in Nottage to celebrate their open mike night. Dave (Murf) Murphy runs the event on a regular Thursday (7.30pm) and allows musicians young and old to perform to a keen audience! The party featured some of the best muso’s in the area and rock band ‘Virgin Summer’ reformed for the night, and went down a storm! And I must give a mention to hosts Mark and Julie for their fab buffet! I also checked out the ‘new Brogdens’ Sunday rock night. Landlord Julian has set up a
good stage area and a lighting rig. The brilliance ‘Cover Sluts’ were there and the venue was roofed! They also drew a huge crowd to the Seahorse on the bank holiday. Rumour has it that landlord Rob had to turn over 100 fans away as the ‘Sluts’ have such a large following! And may I say congrats to drummer Daz and singer Abbey who tie the knot on 12th May. I will see you there. Another date for your diary is Saturday 30th June when there is a charity 60s night at the Grand Pavilion called ‘Discotheque a go-go’. You have got to dress to impress and it’s gonna be a lot of fun as top DJ, our very own Nigel Graham and fellow ‘jocks’ will be there. Well, I finally finished filming! I won’t say what part I had but it did involve a rope and what happens to me will no doubts cheer most of South Wales up! Next month more from the 80s icon Steve strange. Keep the calls coming. stag 07788 962028

the atmosphere conducive and the audience appreciative. A pleasant afternoon. The second visit was to the Senedd at the invitation of David Melding AM the Deputy Presiding Officer of the Welsh Assembly. The choir was requested to perform at a conference to promote self awareness of male prostrate cancer. Sadly the choir lost two of its most stalwart choristers who recently passed away, Ken Facey a long serving and very popular first tenor and Graham Jones, a former baritone’s section leader. As a special tribute to Ken, at his funeral, the choir sang ‘Bring him home’ from Les Miserables’, a piece which he often sang as a soloist at afterglows. Both will be missed by their fellow choristers.

Bridgend and Porthcawl have formed a new fundraising group for Marie Curie. We are a small group and would love to recruit new members to raise money for this worthy cause. The charity employs more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals and last year provided care to more than 31,000 patients. 70% of the funding is from the generous support of the public and the remainder from the NHS. It costs the charity £20 per hour for a nurse to attend a patient in their home.
If anyone would like to join our friendly group please contact Central Fundraising office on 01792 461435. This year Porthcawl is hosting our ‘Blooming Great Tea Party’ on 8th June at Trinity Hall John St from 10.30am - 1.30pm. Please pop in for a cuppa and support us. Recently our group took part in the Great Daffodil appeal and raised £3,839 which put us 3rd in the UK. Thank you to all who bought a daffodil and thank you to the supermarkets who allowed us to collect in their stores.

Former Wales and Lions star, John Devereux entertains P&K members. He played rugby union for Bridgend, Wales and the British Lions and gained his first cap for Wales at the very young age of 19 years. He scored tries against several countries including England. However, back then rugby union was an amateur sport which did not pay the mortgage. Thus he was lured away to rugby league, playing for Wales and Great Britain. John returned to rugby union when

Nicola completed the course in a time of 3hrs 52mins, another PB by over ten minutes from the previous year’s race, another great effort from the determined runner who is an ever present at training sessions. A steady influx of new members, mostly female, has seen the club grow recently and with a good summer’s training it is hoped to target the Cardiff Half Marathon again this year for people wishing to achieve the milestone in this fantastic event. If you harbour any thoughts of running in an event such as this, then joining a running club could be the best way to fulfil your ambition. elusive welsh open 2012 Young, Barfield & Zoeftig claim Elusive wins. An early start on Saturday morning saw organisers, surfers and spectators greeted to brisk offshore winds, two-foot waves and overcast skies. After a few hours of qualifying heats the finals hit the water just after midday. Up first were the U/18 girls who had patiently waited all day for their turn. After a tough battle Swansea’s Milly Zoeftig took the win. Next the U/18 boy’s final hit the water and in close and nail biting finale, Constantine’s Rhys Barfield just doing enough to seal the win as he was pushed all the way. The Open final did not disappoint, four of the con-
tests standouts took battle including a fresh looking Rhys Barfield just after winning the U/18 title Finally it was a repeat win for 2006 Welsh Open Winner Mike Young, being the only surfer to repeat an Elusive double. oPen

Well, we’ve had a little bit of summer in March and surfed a few sunset surfs under the skies of orange, red and gold as the coastline began to take on the summer feel. Then, we have fallen back into winter again as temperatures dropped back to single figures and surfers put back on their gloves and hoods. We only had a few small glassy surfs last month with nothing big
to report. 2ft in size. Local pub landlords on the coast and surfers from Bridgend are in despair as to why the council has axed the last bus back through Southerndown and Ogmore by Sea to Bridgend at pub closing time. When at the same time, the councils are trying to promote tourism. This must be reversed, for the sake of our countryside pubs which are part of our British heritage. A few local guys headed off to Morroco end of March, where Nick Howell, Eugene Travers Jones, Charlie Puddicombe and Dave Walker scored some over head waves at spots like Mysteries, The Sauce and Crocodiles Beach. david a Batten

surf report Porthcawl and area have had about as good a spring for surfing as we could ever wish for, with a mini-heat wave throwing up twenty-degree sunshine and a pulse of good quality, long-distance groundswell. Although water temperatures have been a little slower to warm that you’d expect with such weather, it didn’t stop people from really loosening up in the classic conditions. An epic session went down in the Esp, with some of the town’s most experienced guardsmen Gary Lewis, Rhino Thomas and Greg Owen all threading a glut of hollow waves with style and precision. Chris Seage – stoked at the birth of his and wife Emily’s daughter Indie – has also been ripping this month. Other notable mentions, among many, from recent swells, have been Julian Gardiner, Adrian Boyles, Mike Hunter, Richie Perkins and Max Tucker. The local girls have also been surfing as good as ever this
spring. Danielle Curling, Emma Curtis, Breige Lawrence, Angharad John, Alyssa Podesta and Emily Williams are all lighting Porthcawl’s lineups up every time they surf. Mother Nature did show that typical stubborn streak, however, when the Elusive Welsh Open rolled in to town mid-April, with a crisp swell but the coldest day of the month! Summer turned to winter in less than a week, but this didn’t stop local surfers from pushing through to the latter stages. Tom Bentley and Rob Blythe led the charge, and both made the final. Bearing in mind this is now a full Welsh ranking event, this is a fantastic achievement – great work! The Welsh Nationals are set to run over the Mayday weekend, and Porthcawl surfing will no doubt be well represented. Let’s hope the freesurfing scene in the mean time continues to enjoy such a run of waves and weather... See you in the water. toM anderson www.tomandersonbooks.com

Porthcawl rFc youth Llandaff RFC Youth 5 Porthcawl Youth 28 This friendly was played in beautiful sunshine on the UWIC fields in Cardiff. Having already beaten Pentyrch and Cardiff Quins this was the third Cardiff side the Young Seaweeds have played and were hoping to make it three from three. However with a number of players being unavailable and Llandaff having a good season it was going to be a stern test. Although once again playing against a bigger side the Young Seaweeds had

Brackla harriers April has been a busy season for the running clubs with it being the start of the spring Marathons including the iconic Virgin London Marathon. the upper hand in the scrums and lineout. This dominance allowed them to enjoy a lot of possession however the home sides defence was very good and held out the Seaweeds’ attacks until a typical break out of the ruck by Owen Wright led him to race away to score the first try of the game which was converted by Huw Mitchell. This seemed to galvanise Llandaff who began to try to spread the wall wide but Porthcawl’s defence held firm and the home side were unable to put any points on the scoreboard. The second half started with Llandaff attacking and they began to use their larger forwards more often which put pressure on the Young Seaweeds. Through excellent organised defence Porthcawl were able to frustrate their opponents and began to regain control of the game. A great run by prop JT saw him power through a number of defenders to score under the posts which was converted by Mitchell.
The home side then scored an unconverted try of their own to put pressure on Porthcawl. However a few minutes later after sustained possession flanker Jack Taylor showed great pace to score wide out which was well converted by Mitchell. The final try of the game came from winder Josh Williams who showed his speed as he stepped inside then out to run around his opposite number from 40 meters to race in unopposed and score under the posts. This was again converted by Mitchell who enjoyed a 100% day with the boot. Another excellent performance by the Young Seaweeds and if it wasn’t for two occasions when the ball was dropped over the line the score line could have been even more convincing. Llandaff played their part in a very good game and batted to the end showing that on their day they are a very good side.
Tide, this time a multi tribute act including Freddie Starr, Tom Jones, Shania Twain and the ‘main attraction’ Pink! Now please forgive me if this starts to sound like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar speech. We would as always like to say a massive thank you to Fran, Jeff, Dave and all the staff at the Hi Tide for helping us with all our fundraising efforts. Thanks to Robbie Owens for his excellent compering and DJ skills on the night. Thanks to all those friends, family
and others that donated raffle prizes or bought tickets for the night. We would also like to thank Barclays who have generously added £750 to our total by match-funding our raffle takings on the night of £768. Our fundraising total now stands at a fantastic £31,280 (our initial target two years ago was £20,000). You may have spotted some of the team out and about training with our rucksacks on. give yourself a spring marathon target. The London Marathon is acknowledged in the Guinness Book of Records as the single largest charity fundraising event and last year saw over 36,000 runners completing the course many in support of their favoured charities. My wife Lesley will also be running this year and it will be her first full marathon for the Chloe
Bigmore Trust. The Brackla Harriers will, on the 9th and 10th of June be competing in the ‘Castles Relay’. This prestigious event involves teams of runners, running 20 stages from Caernarfon Castle to Cardiff Castle. The event which is organised by Les Croupiers Running Club is now in its 30th year and is a real credit to its organisers when you consider it is basi-

A big thank you to Alan Phillips and the WRU for allowing us to have the 6 Nations Trophy on Sunday 1st April. Our minis and juniors (including parents!) were thrilled and loved having their photos taken with the trophy. Our Under 13s were entertaining a touring side from Bridgenorth who could not believe it was the actual trophy; they were convinced it was a replica. A fantastic day was had by all. Photos taken on the day are available on www.porthcawlrfc. com

seemed like the ideal time to arrange a walk over Newton Dunes to Ogmore and back via the Pelican. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a six hour walk in the wind and rain with the much anticipated pint of lager replaced by a cup of hot chocolate. On the plus side we know now our wet weather gear works! If you would like to sponsor any of the team for the climb please contact Terry or myself on 07971179028. louise PiPer-Jones

rugby club saint sébastien Basse goulain visit to Porthcawl The young French squad from RCSSBG (Rugby Club Saint Sébastien Basse Goulain) Porthcawl’s sister town in France, thoroughly enjoyed their recent visit to Porthcawl. The French lads played every game with a resolute determination. The wind was bitterly cold at times but the sun and the young players shone out at every game. In each of the visitors’ games, a trophy, sponsored by Porthcawl Town Twinning Association, was awarded to the winning side. Richard Rowe a trustee of Porthcawl RFC Club and member of the Town Twinning Association was on hand to award the Cup after the visitors’ first game at Bridgend Athletic under 16s. After the RCCSSBG second game with Porthcawl Comprehensive School Under 15s, Ryan Bevington, Ospreys and Wales International, presented the cup to the winning captain.
In the final Under 16s game of their five day visit, the Mayor of Porthcawl Cllr Barbara Stubbs made the award after RCSSBG played Porthcawl RFC Under 16s. The Mayor also presented framed team photographs to the Captain of Rugby Club Saint Sébastien Basse Goulain. Following each game the visitors were entertained by the host side and on the final night a Soiree was held at the Porthcawl Rugby Club when various gifts were exchanged. Porthcawl RFC presented a commemorative slate plaque to the French team manager, Thierry Guermonprez , who was responsible for organising and planning the itinerary, Thierry also presented commemorative tee shirts to the players of all three homes teams. We look forward to seeing return games when Porthcawl teams hopefully tour France in the future. The tour was a wonderful success and thanks must be expressed to all those involved.
