From CenCal Spearfishing & the Directors of the 2017 US Spearfishing Nationals Welcome to the cold, rough and challenging waters of Northern California. In this land of gray fog, mossy leaves, dark saturated soil and 56 degree water, you will find a diver who likens a 5 foot swell to a swimming pool. You will hear a charmed chuckle when outsiders complain of 25 knots winds and numb hands. You will feel the shear pain of salt spray sending daggers deep into your eyes, only to see an old NorCal salt’s hardened and pronounced brow fighting back the agony with pure joy. You see, these are the true “ground and pound” divers of the spearfishing world, who find their ocean path intertwined in Nomadic legend, white water entries and exits, and the glory of bringing home a 20 plus pound dinosaur paired with a 10 inch rock snail. So get your thickest suit, pour yourself another batch of weights and wipe the snot from your nose . . . . Noyo Harbor is waiting to be impressed.

2017 US Nationals Men’s Teams
Team Bad Buoys - CenCal #1 My name is Aaron Sturtevant, I am 21 years old and currently inhabit a small coastal town called Pacifica, California. I have a deep appreciation for the outdoors and especially love snorkeling while chasing fish with pointy objects. I will be competing with my two good buddies, Kris “LiveAloha” Cortez and Charles “IceColdChuck” LaKamp. Go Team Bad Buoys!
Aaron Sturtevant Aloha! My name is Kris Cortez and I was born and raised on Kauai. I’ve been spearfishing since I was 6 years old and don’t plan on ever stopping! I live in San Jose with my wife who is 5 months pregnant so I got a little diver boy or girl on the way! The outdoors is where I want to be! Team Bad Buoys!
Kris Cortez
Hi all, I was born and raised in the city of San Francisco and became interested in spearfishing after some time spent open water swimming in the SF bay. Freediving, spearfishing and travel are now my passions and I hope to explore new depths around the world in the near future.
Charles LaKamp
Privateers - CenCal #2 DW Haussler, AKA 6 fins, Big D, DW, and Dennis Haussler. 60 yrs old & I still remember my first national comp 20 yrs ago in Malibu. Got crushed but figured I could do better so I stayed with it. Won a few, lost a few, had some great times and met some fantastic people. I have truly loved this sport, but now I find myself at the truth of “I’m tired of competing”. This will be my last national comp, and I hope to end my career on the podium with my team of Privateers, Alex Reynaud and Greg Fonts.
Dennis Haussler This is as good as it gets for me. Diving with DW, a person who I have become amazing friends with and consider my most influential mentor. And diving with my long lost brother Fonts, who has inspired me to push my diving and training to new levels over the past 9 years. Looking forward to this one! Huge thank you to the Freedive Shop, Sea Sniper & Gannet for their support and sponsorship over the years.
Alex Reynaud
Having the nationals back in California always makes for a challenging day. I have dove throughout Northern CA for my entire life and know how challenging the ocean can be. I wish the best to every competitor. I would like to thank Rob Allen, Meister Carbon Fins & the FreeDive Shop for their continued sponsorship over the years. Let’s hit the water!
Greg Fonts
NorCal Dudes - CenCal #3 I have been freedive spearfishing for about 8 years and am looking forward to my first Nationals competition. Some of the best diving I have done are overnights offshore of Hatteras when the Gulf Stream pushes in and diving the northern California coast in the middle of a drought with amazing visibility. I have been diving the California coast for the last 5 years, but have never dove the competition area, so I should probably try to do that before hand at least once.
Aaron Bever I have been freedive spearfishing since the late 1990’s and joined Norcal Skin Divers shortly after that. I have enjoyed the Cencal camaraderie and community and look forward to continuing that for many years to come! This is my 1st Nationals and I look forward to having fun and seeing all the familiar faces as well as the new. Good luck to all!
Jeff Fornes Having enjoyed the California Coast since 1973, this OG is looking forward to another shot at the Nationals in the waters off Noyo Harbor. Freedive spearfishing has always been my favorite way to dive, and diving with CenCal since 1981 has made it even more fun. I look forward to seeing familiar and so many new faces! I also want to thank my wife for her support for so many Years! Dive Safe, Score Well, and Good Luck to All.
Lou Galliazo
East Bay Barcacles - CenCal #4 I started scuba diving in college and competed in my first Cen-Cal spearfishing tournament in 1997, in Fort Ross where I lucked upon a nice 16 lb Ling Cod and won big fish for the tournament. While that was dumb luck, I have refined my skills a bit and have competed in a half dozen or so National tournaments, and lately have done a lot more diving for pleasure than competition.
Dave Lang It all started from Coach Lee Walton, who nudged Paul then Dave and I to Competitively Spearfish. Since 1997, it’s been a learning experience competing in CenCal and at National Competitions. Looking for redemption and diving with coach's presence this year at Nationals!
Frank Schweininger
I had the opportunity to compete in the 2012 US Nationals at Albion and that was an experience that I will never forget. Then my two team mates decided that I should make another attempt and here I am. I am looking forward to the challenge and having a great time with Dave and Frank.
Mike Chavez
Pacific Freedivers - CenCal #5 I have grown up diving the wonderful and abundant Northern CA coast for 35 years and am lucky to call it my second home. I am looking forward to competing in my first US Nationals and excited for it to be in my own local home waters. I spend my free time enjoying the wonderful sport of spearfishing with good friends and fellow like-minded “Norcal Underwater Hunter” divers.
Matt Mattison My home in Timber Cove is about 2 hours south of this years National site. I have lived in Timber Cove for the last 8 years and have had the opportunity to dive some of Northern California’s best abalone and fishing grounds. This August, I turn 45 and what better way to spend your birthday than with friends in the water.
Jason O’Donnle
I started spearfishing when living in New England in my early years and have spent the last 10 years living in Hawaii. Looking forward to being with Matt and Jason at this years Nationals.
John Latta
Palm Beach Freedivers I am stoked to compete in my 4th US National Competition and am hoping to earn a place on the 2018 US National Team. But my first goal is to not freeze to death or get eaten by a great white.
Ryan Myers Spencer Haskins is an avid Spearo that lives on the Big Island. He is a HECS Elite Team member and member of Team Aimrite Hawaii since 2013. He fell in love with Hawaii, and then made it his home when the University of Hawaii at Manoa recruited him to swim from 2001-2004.
Spencer Haskins Justin Lee
My name is Justin Lee and I couldn't be more stoked to be diving in Fort Bragg with my good friends and 2017 US Spearfishing National's teammate Spencer "Da White Hammah" Haskins and Ryan "Meow" Myers! I look forward to freezing my Hawaiian butt off while competing against some truly great spear fishermen/ women. I'd like to thank a few companies that helped me get here Progenex, HECS Aquatic, Salty Crew, Ha Loa Aina, Penetrator Fins, Aimrite USA, Woodroze and Mokulele Airlines. Also I'm a brand new father and by the time you read this my 6 week old daughter Elle wished me good luck and wanted me to win... so think about my daughter when you have the opportunity to shoot a fish bigger than what I've shot!! Thank you Sonnaly for all that you do for me and our new little family. Good luck everyone, Dive safe and return home to your families!!
Rocky Mountain Spearfishing #1 Mike McGuire I was born into a diving family that loved to camp, dive, and take game along the Western coast of the US and into Mexico. My brother Glen and I started in fresh water river competitions over 45 years ago and have been blessed with many great experiences at a national and world level. I now enjoy giving back to the sport through the fresh water meets we hold in the mid west. Getting my daughter and son involved at a young age and seeing them grow to be strong and safe divers has been the most exciting thing for me over these last few years.
Kelston McGuire
Team McGuire is very proud to be sponsored by Rob Allen and the Freedive Shop.
Kelston has been diving for 12 years and has competed in 7 nationals. He enjoys the FUN part of being in the water with friends and family. Kelston dives California, MidWest Lakes and Baja regularly. Most of his competition time is in freshwater shooting Carp, Walleyes, Striper & Northern Pike. Kelston especially enjoys catching lobster, shooting big Grouper & Yellowtail and beating Dad.
I’m just a guy that likes to shoot fish. Nothing special. No fancy sponsors, no fancy boats or photos. Just grinding away doing my thing. Father of 5, business owner and all around jack of all trades. Can’t wait to get this nationals over, I’m getting too old for cold water and sharks.
Paul Young
Cold Water Killers - Rocky Mountain Spearfishing #2 2016 Pacific Coast Championship Winning Team
Deke Jacobsen I've been in the ocean for as long as I can remember, but didn't have my first experience diving/spearfishing until 4 years ago. I was fortunate enough to start off diving with some amazing friends, who took the time to show me the ropes. Thanks to them, spearfishing quickly became an obsession! I am honored to be competing in this year's Nationals and for having the chance to represent my sponsors Red Triangle Spearfishing, Dark Waters, and team ColdWaterKillers! Looking forward to seeing everyone and what the ocean has in store for us!
I started diving for abalone with my dad when I was 12 years old. About two and a half years ago, I started spearfishing. Haven't looked back since. I'm always looking forward to my next dive trip! I would like to thank my sponsors: Red Triangle Spearfishing, Dark Waters, Jackson Kayaks, and ColdWaterKillers. Ready for a great time!

Like most intrigued divers in Northern California, I took up abalone diving about 3 years ago as my first step into the world of freediving. I picked up spearfishing 2 years ago and since then, I’ve been immersed in the sport by challenging myself to hunt different fish (special shout out to the divers that have helped me check fish off this list - you know who you are) and eventually getting into the competitive scene. Huge thanks to my sponsors: Red Triangle Spearfishing, Dark Waters, and Wilderness Systems Kayaks.
- Mid West Diving Adam Suave I grew up in northern California abalone diving and fishing with my dad. I took a brief hiatus from diving until about six years ago when I got into competitive spearfishing. Most of my diving these days consists of ab diving, rockfish, lingcod and scallops with the very occasional halibut. I mostly dive northern and central California and am looking forward to participating in Nationals for the first time.
I have been diving Northern California for four years now and continue to stride and better myself with every dive. Thank you to all the volunteers for organizing this great event. I look forward to meeting all of the fellow competitors and staff. Wishing everyone safe diving and I’ll see everyone at the weigh ins!
Robert Luiz
I am a NorCal native and I have been diving the north coast for the last 25 years hunting for abalone and spearfishing.

Miami Freedivers - Florida Harolf Dean Hello my name is Harolf and I am another crazy person addicted to this sport. I am happy to return to the cold waters of Fort Bragg and meet new friends, compete with the best divers in the area and have a new experience in this nationals . Mikhail Kuznetsov
Hi everyone, my name is Mikhail Kuznetsov and I am from Russia. I have spearfished for more than 20 years and love it more and more year after year. For the last 5 years I have lived in Florida and love that area more then anything else. Spearfishing is part of my life. I took part in US Nationals 2013 (Rhode Island) and 2014 (Hawaii). Also i have some International spearfishing experience in European and Worldwide Championships. Now I come here in California and will try to compete with the best US divers. That makes me so excited and so happy at the same time. Good luck and dive safe.

The challenging waters of Hawaii have pushed him to great depths in search of some of the most sought after fish in the pacific. Determination, FII certifications and hard work have allowed him to excel in this amazing and difficult sport.

Duane Gaspard is a retired Police Detective and former US Marine. A few years ago he relocated to the coast of Northern California where he soon found a passion for Freediving and Spearfishing. He knows first hand how much these activities can positively help ones mental health and now takes the time to dive as often as possible.

2017 US Nationals Mixed Teams
Team Castillou - CenCal #1
Paul Castillou
Jacob Castillou
This will be Paul and Jacob’s first Nationals as a father and son team. They have been diving together in these cold northern CA waters since Jacob was just a small fish . They have competed in various local meets to successfully qualify as the #1 CenCal mixed team for the 2017 Nationals in Albion. This Nationals is special for them because it is Jacob’s first Nationals and he is excited to be diving with his dad in the Mixed Team Division. Jacob will also be this years youngest competitor and is sure to soak in the experience of this event. They look forward to representing CenCal and continue the family tradition of competing in US National Spearfishing Competitions.
The Tritons - CenCal #2 Kathy Cosby I love everything about freedive spearfishing: the challenge, the underwater environment, the fish, the friends I dive with and the great food to enjoy after. I grew up in the Florida Keys diving with my dad, who competed in the 1967 Nationals in Washington State. And now, Fifty years later, I hope to make him proud and look forward to a day of fun, fish, and friendly competition.
Sean Martin My name is Sean Martin. I am excited to compete in the mixed division for my first ever US Nationals. I am humbled to be included in an event that so many phenomenal Spearo's will be competing in as well. I look forward to not only the competition but the comradery and stories of those I will come in contact with during this amazing life changing journey.
Rocky Mountain Spearfishing #1 Brandi Easter I have been competitively spearfishing for 20 years at CenCal meets, various local meets, Pacific Coast Championships, US National Spearfishing tournaments and the Chile 2004 Women’s World Invitational. This will be my 9th Nationals participation. I am honored to dive with Scott. We look forward to diving with other men and women who have come to compete in this year’s Nationals. Good luck and safe diving.
I am looking forward to my first salt water US Nationals diving with Brandi. Most of my competition experience has been in New Zealand, winning numerous competitions starting at age 13. Recently, won the 2016 USA Freshwater Nationals (international day) and the men’s division 2017 World Freshwater Championships. I have been freediving commercially for Abalone, Sea Urchin and Pearl shell. After a few years being out of the competition circuit, I am keen to get back into it.
Scott MacKereth
Okole Pukas - Greater Los
Angeles Diving Council
Lauren Renteria I have been freediving for 4 years, but only spearfishing for 1 and my skill level has grown exponentially in 2017 under the mentorship of Paul Romanowski. My growth has also been possible thanks to my sponsorship from Spear America, and club affiliation with the OC Spearo's; I'm proud to represent them all in our chase for the win.
Paul Romanowski 2017 marks 20 years since I dove in my first nationals. I enjoy the diving in the north coast immensely, and enjoy the challenge of the cold, and the excellent competition the locals give us. I am excited to be diving with Lauren, who has been a tremendously fast learner and she is a very dedicated diver. It's going to be an awesome experience to chase the championship with her. I look forward to diving for my club, The Los Angeles Fathomiers, and my adopted club, the OC Spearos. I would like to thank Spear America for supporting our effort, and as always, I am thankful for the support the Riffe family has extended to me throughout my diving career.
