MADE IN THE SHADE

Get our tips and tricks for planting a tree at home... just in time for the Jubilee and Arbor Day.

Another winter is behind us and I am very pleased to see signs of spring popping up everywhere. The beginning of spring always motivates me to start thinking of entertaining and making the most of indoor/outdoor living. Small gardening projects and blurring the lines between interior and exterior spaces with plants are always top on my list. This spring my entertaining will definitely include a focus on the Platinum Jubilee. This celebration of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II is a momentous occasion and worthy of honoring. You'll find much more information about it in the pages of this special spring edition. See how you can take part in the festivities by planting a tree or throwing a street party. Also, don't miss the award-winning design by Rob Roncarati. See how his incredible London loft space went from awkward to amazing. Also in this edition, you will get a chance to see the winning designs from our first ever Seasonal Living Design Challenge. The designers were given the task of creating renderings of spaces using our products in seasonal settings. The grand prize winner, Rebekah Correll, has won a VIP trip to the spring High Point Furniture Market. Lastly, I want to take a moment to thank you... our readers, our clients, and our team for everything you do to make our recent win at the ARTS Awards (Accessory Resources Team) possible. For the sixth time we have taken home the prize in our category: Outdoor Living. It is an honor to be selected, but I know we could not have done it without the support of so many. I hope you enjoy what you discover in these pages, try our recipes, and get inspired by the travel and design content. If you are a designer and would like to be considered for a future edition, please contact us at editor@seasonalliving.com. Have a wonderful spring season.

COVER STORY

A UNIQUE MOMENT IN TIME ON THE CALENDAR There are a number of events and activities planned for the Platinum Jubilee celebration in the United Kingdom. Perhaps the most highprofile event will be a concert at Buckingham Palace on June 4th. The lineup has not yet been announced, but it is sure to be star-studded. Another major event will be a procession through the streets of London on June 2nd. The parade will feature more than 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians. This will be the first time the Trooping the Colour event has been held in full since the beginning of the pandemic. Also on June 2nd, beacons will be lit in over 1500 locations throughout the United Kingdom and around the world at the same time it is lit at Buckingham Palace. A contest began on January 10 to find a Jubilee Pudding (or dessert) for the celebration. The contest, which is open to the public, will be judged by Dame Mary Berry, among other notable experts.

There are many other events scheduled including exhibits and the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. This year school children have been asked to create their idea of how the world should look in 70 more years. The winning entries will be transferred to 200 silk flags and paraded through the Mall in London. WHY IT MATTERS This once-in-a-generation event celebrates Queen Elizabeth II's ascension to the throne 70 years ago. She is the longest-reigning monarch in British history and among very few who have achieved this milestone in the history of European monarchs. Over seven decades, the queen has met with leaders and dignitaries from around the globe, created initiatives to strengthen the United Kingdom, and has been the steady constant through national and global crises. You can learn more about the history and impact of her reign in the BBC documentary below.

S

et in north London, Roncarati transformed the space for his family to create a multi-use space with a modern-retro feel. Most importantly, the family wanted a unique loft-space that took advantage of the views. The space needed to serve as a living room, a guest room, a project space, a place to relax, a place to be alone, or a place to be together. The feeling needed to be bright, airy, and exciting. Certain elements were essential, such as a small bathroom, lots of natural elements, maximized living and storage space, and plenty of natural light.

DESIGNER: Rob Roncarati SITE: roncaratidesign.com LOCATION: London, England

THE INSPIRATION

THE CHALLENGES Highest on the list of challenges was determining a layout that allowed full-height access to the “cave” area while allowing room for the staircase and ABOVE: Cork bark paneling and plants take center stage on a wall with ample storage in anthracite gray to make the most of the space. RIGHT: A cozy lounge area is installed next to a clever window system to expand the space and link indoors to outdoors.

Somewhere between mid-century modern (retro) and 1970s sci-fi shows, Roncarati drew his inspiration to create a cool yet zen space to meet the demands of the project. His determination to meet the practical demands while maintaining the desired aesthetic drove many of the design decisions.

SEASONAL design bathroom. This needed to be done without taking up too much valuable main living space. This was especially challenging in three-dimensions and with very tight tolerances.

WELLNESS AND SUSTAINABILITY To incorporate elements of wellness, natural materials were used as much as possible. Very large windows were installed to connect the space with the outdoors and bring in a flood of natural light. Where most people would install a large flat-screen TV, cork bark paneling was installed as the backdrop for live plants and a sculpture made from construction remnants. SOLUTIONS The landing and bathroom are cleverly tucked away behind oak batten doors. When closed, the doors seem to disappear creating a

DANCING IN THE STREET

AS PART OF THE PLATINUM JUBILEE, UK CITIZENS ARE BEING INVITED TO JOIN IN THE BIG JUBILEE LUNCH ON SUNDAY, JUNE 5. PEOPLE WILL BE THROWING STREET PARTIES ACROSS THE LAND TO CELEBRATE... AND YOU CAN, TOO.

Street parties are a great way to get your neighbors together. They can be an enjoyable event for the whole family, or just for adults, as well. Street parties are also a great chance to meet some new people in your neighborhood and make friends that you wouldn’t have otherwise met. WHO TO CONTACT When throwing a street party, it is important to get in touch with your local council and police department to let them know about the event. This will help to avoid any potential problems or misunderstandings. You should also contact your local traffic department, as they may need to close some roads for the party. Finally, depending on the size of your party you may need to contact a party rental company for tables and chairs, a catering company (unless you plan to make it potluck style), and possibly some entertainment. If your party will be sizable, you might consider hiring someone for security. MAKING IT FUN FOR EVERYONE If children will be invited to your street party, be sure to have plenty of activities planned for them. Hiring face painters and other kid-friendly entertainment will go a long way. Consider some sort of activity or contest for the children. This is the perfect time to introduce a United Kingdom or Union Jack theme to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Adults need entertainment, too. If your party is big enough, consider a BEST COSTUME contest. The winner is the one who shows the most UK spirit. Perhaps you might consider a Jubilee Pudding contest for the best homemade dessert. Not only will people have fun with the judging, but there will be plenty of dessert to go around. If alcohol will be served, be sure to have designated drivers or resources available for those who don't live on your street and need a safe ride home. Accidents happen so be sure that there is a first-aid kit on hand and that several people involved with the party (the committee, if you have one) know where to find it in case of emergency. Be sure to notify everyone who lives in the area of the party about potential noise and disruption to traffic.

street party checklist FOOD

You will need plenty of food for everyone. Focus on things that are easy to eat on the go. Setting up a section specifically for food and/or grilling areas will work best for flow and safety.

DRINK

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will likely be on hand. Most importantly, make sure there is plenty of water for everyone.

ENTERTAINMENT

Something fun for the kids is essential, but music for the adults will make everyone more festive.

SHELTER

The whole place doesn't have to be covered, but in case it rains or someone just needs to get out of the sun, a portable canopy is invaluable.

FIRST-AID KIT

Depending on the size of your party, you might want two of these... just in case.

ELECTRICITY

There will be music, potentially lights, and maybe appliances that need to be connected to power. Either establish the connection to power, making sure the cords are not a tripping hazard or rent a generator.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

Safety first... especially if there will be grills involved.

TRASH AND RECYCLING BINS

Keep everyone safe and make clean up a lot quicker. Consider placing these in several spots.

PLANTING THE FUTURE

AS PART OF THIS YEAR'S PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION, PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO "PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE".

INDEED, IT IS A GOOD IDEA AT ANY TIME, BUT JOINING IN THIS SPRING WILL ADD YOUR TREE TO THE OVER 60,000 TREES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN PLANTED IN SUPPORT OF THE QUEEN'S GREEN CANOPY INITIATIVE.

Trees are a valuable natural resource that we need to treat with care. They provide us with shade, clean oxygen, and help keep our environment healthy. Trees also make an attractive addition to your yard or garden. If you're not sure how to plant a tree properly, here are some tips for success: • Choose the right type of tree for your area and soil conditions. • Planting at the right time of year is important because it will affect when the tree starts producing leaves and fruit. • Tree planting requires patience as it can take up to 15 years before they produce any significant benefits. But once established, they will be around for generations providing beauty and environmental benefits. HOW TO PLANT A TREE • Dig a hole that is 2-3 times as wide and just as deep as the root ball of the tree. • Amend the soil in the hole with compost or other organic matter. • Carefully remove the tree from the pot or covering it came in, making sure to keep the root ball intact. • Plant the tree in the hole, making sure to backfill with amended soil. When moving the tree, lift by the root ball and not the trunk. Make sure the tree is straight by looking at it from several angles. • Water well and mulch around the base of the tree. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch is sufficient, but be sure that it not piled directly against the trunk. • Continue to water the tree at least once a week through the first growing season. It won't be necessary if there is rain, but you may need to do it more frequently during very hot periods. Taper off watering in mid-fall.

19

WHEN TO PLANT A TREE Generally, cool temperatures are better for tree planting. Just after the leaves drop in the fall to just before the buds appear in the spring is ideal. However, it's important to note that the time and variety may vary by region. For best results consider consulting an arborist.

... ARBOR DAY IS APRIL 29.

AVOIDING TREE PLANTING PROBLEMS BE PART OF THIS HISTORICAL CELEBRATION AND DO GOOD AT THE SAME TIME. YOUR TREE WILL COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION, BUT ALSO PROVIDE SHELTER FOR WILDLIFE AND BIRDS, HELP REDUCE TEMPERATURES IN URBAN AREAS, AND REMOVE AIR POLLUTANTS. THE QUEEN HAS PLANTED AN OAK ALREADY, AS PART OF A LONGSTANDING TRADITION, AND ENCOURAGES US ALL TO DO THE SAME. YOU CAN SEE THE TREES PINNED TO THE QUEEN'S MAP AND LEARN MORE HERE.

SEASONAL LIVING MAGAZINE

Properly planting a tree is important to ensure its success. However, there are some things to avoid when planting a tree: • Choose an area that will not be regularly mowed or used for other activities. • Choose an area that is not too close to your house or other structures. • Choose an area that is not prone to flooding; • Be sure to include properly amended soil. • Before you begin, be sure to locate all underground utilities. In the US, you can call 811 nationwide. • Check for overhead lines, as well, to be sure that this will not be an issue as your tree matures. TAKEAWAYS:

* PLANT YOUR TREE WHEN THE TEMPERATURES ARE STILL COOL * CONTACT AN ARBORIST, IF NECESSARY, FOR BEST RESULTS * CALL 811 OR VISIT OR VISIT CALL811.COM BEFORE BREAKING GROUND

IN HER WORDS...

I believe that beautiful design can change lives and impact people in a deep, meaningful way. When I decided to create my concept centered around water, I knew that it would also play a part in the division of the space. I used the water element not only to divide the spaces physically, but also to create a mental transition between areas. Water is such an important element in our lives - we rely on it for life, we are inspired by it, in awe of its mystery, and drawn to it. The biggest challenge was deciding on the time of day to create my renderings. I went through a lot of revisions, eventually landing at dusk. I wanted to capture the moody dark glow of winter in the interior spaces of the home while still capturing the beautiful exterior views. Seasonal Living’s furniture is very sleek and modern, yet approachable. I designed the architecture of the home to reflect and compliment the design of the furniture. This design is located in a fictional place. In my imagination, the home is located on a dramatic cliff overlooking a peaceful bay in Bali or somewhere similar. BLURRED LINES

IN HER WORDS...

I am passionate about designing extraordinary and functional spaces, creating an environment that is stylish, comfortable, and most importantly, providing a space that attracts and inspires people on a daily basis, and that they will love for years to come. I imagine this home in the sunny state of Florida, near the coast. As I drive through Miami and West Palm Beach, or travel through Europe and Asia, I am always impressed by the architecture. Therefore, the inspiration for this design was drawn from my travels and collective experiences. DIVINE DINING

IN HER WORDS...

My design was inspired by the simple lines of the Seasonal Living products. Their modern approach led me to create a space where the furniture pieces were the protagonist. I’ve been interested in looking for ways to include a biophilic approach in my designs. This project offered an opportunity to incorporate some of these principles. The idea behind this concept was to make both furniture and nature coexist in the same space. By bringing in natural elements and creating a direct visual contact with the surroundings, this space feels open and refreshing. 1. Add all of the dry ingredients to a mixing bowl or food processor and whisk or mix until fully combined.

2. Add butter and blitz in a food processor or mix with a pastry blender or a fork until the butter is well-combined and evenly distributed. The consistency should be that of coarse sand and the mixture should hold together when pinched.

3. Pour all of the dough into a tart pan and press firmly into the bottom and up the sides. The bottom of a drinking glass works well for this. Use a sharp knife to remove any excess from the edge. Poke holes in the bottom of the crust with a fork.

4. Crumple a sheet of parchment paper to make it pliable. Then open it and place it in the tart pan. Fill the tart pan with pie weights or dry beans and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking. Preheat oven to 350˚F.

5. Bake the tart crust (with the pie weights/beans) for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden on the edge. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature before filling. For the filling:

1. Place mango, plum, sugar, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat and then reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring and mashing the fruit as is softens. Cool slightly.

2. Place the cooked fruit in a food processor and blitz until smooth. Pass the mixture through a fine mesh strainer and discard any remaining solids.

3. Place gelatin in a small bowl and cover with 4 tablespoons of water. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes. While the gelatin rests, return the cooked fruit to the saucepan and re-heat it over medium-low heat. Place mascarpone in a large mixing bowl.

4. Add the gelatin to the fruit puree and whisk to fully combine. Pour the warm fruit mixture over the mascarpone and whisk to fully incorporate.

5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whipping cream, confectioners sugar, and vanilla on high speed until it reaches stiff peaks. Add the whipped cream to the fruit and mascarpone mixture and gently fold it in just until well-combined.

6. Pour the mixture into the prepared tart crust and smooth out the top with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon. Refrigerate, uncovered, for at least 2 hours before adding the topping.

5. Add roast beef, roasted vegetables, warmed peas, and a bit of gravy to one end of the wrap and then roll it up tight. Serve with additional gravy for dipping. For the roast beef: 1. Allow the meat to come to room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking it. Preheat oven to 475˚F. 2. Rinse and chop onion, carrots, and celery. Add them to a roasting pan with the unpeeled cloves of garlic. Add the fresh herbs and drizzle all with olive oil. Toss the ingredients and push them together in the center of the roasting pan. 3. Add a bit of olive oil to the roast and rub it on all sides to coat. Season the roast well with salt and freshly cracked black pepper and rub it to be sure it is completely coated. Place the roast on top of the vegetables. If using a probe thermometer (recommended), insert the probe into the center of the roast and set the gauge for 135˚F for medium rare or 145˚F for medium. 4. Place the roast in the oven and immediately reduce the cooking temperature to 390˚F. 5. Roast until the thermometer gauge alerts you or around 50 minutes for medium rare or 1 hour for medium. 6. Prepare the diced potatoes and carrot slices for roasting. Add them to a parchment-lined baking sheet and toss them with a bit of olive oil. Season them with salt and pepper and place them in the oven to cook (around 45 min.) until fork tender with crispy edges. 7. Check the roast at the halfway point and add ¼ cup of water to the pan if the roasting vegetables look dry. 8. Remove the roast and the roasted potatoes and carrots from the oven when they are done. Transfer the roast to a cutting board to rest for at least 15 minutes before cutting it. Add the drippings from the roasting pan to a sauce pan for the gravy, excluding the vegetables and herbs. 9. Slice the beef very thinly with a sharp knife for the burritos. For the gravy: 1. After placing the drippings from the roast in a medium saucepan, add the beef stock, a few sprigs of fresh herbs, and bay leaves. Add salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes. 2. Add flour and water to a small bowl. Stir to mix fully, leaving no clumps. 3. Remove herbs and add the flour/water mixture. Continue to cook over medium heat while whisking to fully incorporate flour mixture. Continue cooking, whisking occasionally, until the desired consistency is achieved.
