S P RING IN BLOOM

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR... Welcome to Issue 5… Springtime in Savannah. With this issue, I invite you to relax for a few minutes as you enjoy the beauty and moss-draped charm of the South’s most historic city, Savannah, Georgia, founded in 1773. As you flip through the pages of this issue, imagine breathing in the fragrance of the thousands of flowers now in bloom in The Fragrance Garden in Forsyth Park or enjoying a nighttime rooftop pub crawl, cocktail in hand - legally. In this issue, you'll meet SCAD graduate Joel Snayd and his wife and design partner, Erika, owners of Rethink Design Studio, well known for their sensitive and stunning re-adaptations of historic Savannah homes and hotels. In addition, you'll be introduced to the internationally known holistic garden designer, Blair Michener, ASLA, whose exquisite garden renderings, highlighted in this issue, are works of art worthy of framing. His gardening tips will be well worth the read. You'll also be served a bevy of ideas for throwing your own southern porch parties - complete with recipes and tips for making traditional jelly biscuits and deviled eggs, and all, of course, to be enjoyed with a Bloody Mary in hand! I hope you enjoy this issue of Seasonal Living Magazine and, as always, I welcome your comments and suggestions for future issues at editor@seasonalliving.com.

S AVANNAH

Surround yourself with spanish moss and southern charm. Enjoy your time experiencing the rich history and architecture or use the city as home base for outdoor adventures just beyond the city limits.

SEASONAL travel

Often referred to as the "Hostess City of the South",

Savannah is welcoming and ready to wow you with her hospitality. The city has repeatedly been given the distinction of one of the “world’s friendliest cities” by Condé Nast Traveler readers. Under its veil of Spanish moss, you’ll find art, period architecture, boutiques, and local cuisine including fresh-caught seafood. Spend the afternoon dining al fresco at one of the many bistros or pubs and walk freely (and legally) around town with your drink. Spend the evening discovering some of the many ghost stories about Savannah and learn why it is also known as the most haunted city in America.

3

Make the most of the spring climate and enjoy all of the outdoor activities Savannah has to offer. Stroll through the Historic District and take in rows of bright and colorful azaleas and unforgettable architecture. Visit the famed Bonaventure Cemetery, Forsyth Park, and Savannah Botanical Gardens. Stop for lunch downtown and take a free ferry ride on the Savannah Belle across the Savannah River for stunning views of the city. Move just outside the city to walk along the McQueen’s Island Trail, where you might even spot some frolicking dolphins. For even more outdoor fun head to Tybee Island Beach, just 20 minutes from the Historic District.

SEASONAL design DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT rethink design studio Husband and wife design team, Joel and Erika Snayd, focus on finding the perfect balance between the old and the new for their clients through their company, Rethink Design Studio. Joel's master's degree in preservation from SCAD and Erika's keen design sensibility have combined to bring new life to many of Savannah's most beautiful historic homes and commercial establishments through adaptive reuse. The design thought process for them begins with a careful study of scale and proportion followed by a careful blending of materials, colors, and furnishings with the architecture of the home. Listening and adaptive reuse of existing materials are central to their design philosophy and at the heart of their success. Through helping their clients navigate solutions that are creative, realistic, appropriate and fit their budgets, they have become Savannah's *go to* design team now for the past 13 years.

SEASONAL design DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT blair michener Redefining exteriors as spatial art… that’s how garden designer, Blair Michener ASLA, sees his work. Using the language of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture he communicates his design intentions. He chooses to pay close attention to architectural context and integration… blurring the lines and scope of traditional garden design in the direction of spatial art. "With time, I continue to forge places where there were none.", says Michener. Blair sees himself first and foremost as a thoughtful, responsible, and artful creative. He focuses on the details, whether he's drawing out a design, working with sculptors to create one of a kind artistic elements for his landscapes, or working with the masons he employs to hand carve and hand cut each piece of stone used in a landscape. It is this approach that has made Michener a highly-sought garden designer first in Toronto, starting in 1987 and now in Houston, where he has owned his own firm, for the last 7 years.

4. A WHIMSICAL WATER FEATURE ADDS HUMOR TO THIS GARDEN.

Sustainability plays a key role in Blair’s designs. He uses only sustainable, organic materials in his gardens, including organic soils. His ‘go-to’ choice for custom organic soils is Nature’s Way, started by one of the nation’s top soil scientists and providers. Water management is also extremely important and must be considered for each project, but especially for large scale projects. For Blair, sustainable means creating well-built gardens that will survive over the next 100 years. BLAIR'S TOP TIPS: • Use compost instead of black mulch, which is often full of petroleum byproducts. Bark mulch, in general, is not as effective as it can miss the opportunity to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. • Use renewable resources such as concrete and natural stone as much as possible for landscape designs. • Native plants are great, but always consider their size at maturity because they are in their native habitats. Consider that when choosing plants. The goal is to get the right plant to grow to the right height for the desired effect. • Discuss drainage requirements with city officials. Make sure your landscape design meets those drainage requirements. It can get technical and each city is different.
