NOTE FROM THE EDITOR... Paris conjures up so many wonderful memories for me, as I spent many years of my childhood spending sublime summers and autumns living in memorable France. I especially love Paris in the late fall, when the weather cools and the city explodes into a photogenic painting of every color imaginable. It's also less crowded at this time of year, making it easier to quickly get a sidewalk table at many of Paris' 4 and 5 star small cafes and restaurants (find a selection of them inside) and for visiting Paris's famous landmarks without having to wait in long lines. Taking pictures at the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and in Paris' famous gardens, Jardins du Luxembourg and Jardins des Tuileries, becomes a pleasure. It's also the perfect season for comfortably entertaining outdoors and inside this issue, you will find 3 easy, delicious recipes to make, along with a special cocktail, to help you delight the taste buds of your guests. Since Paris is so well known for its cuisine, we invited the past President of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, kitchen designer Maria Stapperfenne, who spent two weeks there exploring both Paris Design Week's events and the Maison & Objet show, to be our guest contributor for this issue. We hope you enjoy her fascinating trend report on page 11.

the instantly recognizable city of lights is calling. lose yourself among its cobblestone streets dotted with monuments, museums, bistros, and boutiques. discover a culturally diverse city that holds fast to tradition while embracing modernity. explore the history of this capital city and walk in the footsteps of generations who have come before you to fall in love... with each other, with someone new, or with the city itself.

P
aris has long been at the forefront of architecture, art, food, and fashion. A visit here is a smorgasbord for the soul and has inspired people in every facet of life for centuries. While generally considered a ‘big’ city, it is well concentrated and easy to navigate. Made of 20 districts or ‘arrondissements’, which are organized in a spiral, most major attractions are walkable and those that lie a bit outside of the ‘centre ville’ are easily accessible by the very efficient metro system. If you are staying for a week or more, consider buying a Navigo Decouverte Pass (about $30) for access to all Paris regions. Use your pass to visit areas outside of the normal tourist spots for a genuine Parisian experience.

GE T T HE PA R T Y S TA R T E D In Paris, the apératif (or apéro in everyday terms) is a way of life. It's the beginning of a great dinner party or cocktails and appetizers before heading out for the evening. It's not necessary to spend hours in the kitchen. The perfect apéro is a collection of small, easy to make nibbles and quality accompaniments such as fresh fruits, good cheeses, meats, and bread. Things to consider: • Pick up a good assortment of charcuterie and cheese. For the cheese, consider at least one hard, one soft, and one blue. • Olives - there's no wrong answer here, but for a unique spin try our recipe for warm, herbed olives and almonds. • Your apéro is not complete without a baguette. Find the best one in town and buy it as fresh as possible. • Have a variety of sweet and salty bites, or combine them into one appetizer. • Make the occasion simple for your guests with bite-sized appetizers. • Offer a fresh element with fruits, vegetables, and herbs. • Prepare one signature drink for the occasion and supplement with a variety of wine options and beer. Don't forget a few soft drinks for non-drinkers.
WHITE FAUX NEGRONI

MODERN
FACADE DESIGN BY MARY DOUGLAS DRYSDALE Paris is a global reference for fine cuisine, fashion, art, culture… and interior design. While we instinctively make a connection to Haussmannian style, Paris design has evolved over the decades to incorporate new trends with the sumptuous skeletons of its classical buildings. The soul of Paris design lies in its glorious rooms with tall ceilings, detailed moldings, and plenty of light. The heart is defined by chic refinement and the mastery of elegant subtlety. With the vast diversity of Paris, anything is possible when it comes to design. The magic is in the fine details and meticulous curation. Chase Daniel

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT Mary Douglas Drysdale What started with romance led celebrated designer, Mary Douglas Drysdale, to fall for something else… Paris. Her early years living there informed her perspective and made an indelible impression on her work and her life. Mary grew up in Charlottesville, VA. Her father, an attorney, was fascinated by architecture. Her mother created the good life through decorating, baking, and creating a wonderful home… right down to an extraordinary rock garden. At the age of 19, Mary fell for a Parisian and boarded a plane for Paris for the summer. Three years later, she was still there and felt that Paris had become ‘home’. However, it was time to return to the States... reluctantly. Nevertheless, returning to the US would never change the indelible impact Paris had made on Mary's aesthetic sensibility.
Chase Daniel
One of the notable influences is evident in Mary's uncanny ability to utilize positive and negative space in her work to frame what she wants the viewer to see. Through this, she creates sublime moments of beauty where the eye can rest and the soul feels refreshed. There is a clarity and integrity to Mary's work that is inspired by her travels, yes, but also by a fondness for 18th century American design.
photos by Susan Serra
As she stated, "In this period of American design, one person was very often responsible for everything from locating and siting the home, to desigining the architectural features, to selecting the finishes and furniture. This way of thinking, also prevalent in Parisian design, has had a profound impact on the sense of aesthetic cohesiveness that people often comment on when they see my work."

by MARIA STAPPERFENNE
One of the top wholesale home and decor shows in the world, Maison et Objet, occurs twice per year in the heart of Paris. Our insider, Maria Stapperfenne, recently attended the Fall 2019 show and reports back here with her take on emerging trends. The show consists of seven halls filled with everything from smart gifts to children's items... housewares to fabrics... restaurant design ideas to outdoor kitchens and spaces. Each décor-related area pushes the applications of products and design to one's property lines with the latest in must-have looks.

Manufacturers were anxious to promote their use of ‘green' materials or processes in their products. With environmental consciousness being the norm, items included the reuse of cork, plastics, juice pouches, bicycle and car tires, pull tabs from cans and building products that include shutters, windows and doors. There were vendors touting the benefits of glass and metal straws, a MILLENIA BAR set of reusable chopsticks that CHAIR slides into a spoon, and cleverly CLICK TO LEARN MORE designed reusable containers to bring your meals and needed accessories anywhere.

COLOR & TEXTURE
Blues of all hues (but especially lavender!) were the color story of this show, with a strong cobalt blue taking center stage in many of the striking accent pieces that showcased the classicism trend that was also so prevalent. Paired with these blues was mustard yellow and other pops of color. Yellow was still strong, as well as blush pink, but in a slightly different shade than we've seen in the past. The *in* fabric this year? Velvet! Velvet was everywhere on the show floor, in furnishings, clothing, gifts, decor and even kitchens!

PARIS CHIC... INSIDE & OUT
Parisian interiors are so much more than high ceilings and crown moldings. Because of the age of many of the buildings, raw hewn beams, wall supports, and original, refinished wood floors are common and create a backdrop of natural elements. These elements make it easy to connect to the outdoors, which is essential as windows are frequently open in Paris due to the lack of air-conditioning. Designing a space with this blurred line between indoors and outdoors requires choosing the right furnishings to reflect the feeling. Our PERPETUAL METAL collection marries steel bases with handcrafted lightweight concrete tops to achieve a modern, sophisticated, and natural vibe.
