SEATTLE UNIVERSITY WELCOMES YOU TO THE RED TIE CELEBRATION SATURDAY, MAY 31, 2014 GRAND HYATT SEATTLE

PROCEEDS BENEFIT SEATTLE U ATHLETICS

THE RED TIE CELEBRATION 2

May 31, 2014 Dear Red Tie Friends, On behalf of the student-athletes, coaches and staff of Seattle U Athletics, I welcome you to our second annual Red Tie Celebration. Ours is a rich history, and this evening gives us a terrific opportunity to honor one of the most remarkable game changers in the history of any sport, #22 Elgin Baylor. Coming from across the country, Elgin arrived in Seattle and promptly led his team, the University and the City of Seattle to the grandest stage in college basketball, the national title game. His courage and toughness knew no bounds. His basketball prowess and humility not only transformed the game but challenged deeply rooted cultural norms. He truly is a game changer. His legacy in the sport of basketball resides with the greatest of all time, with the likes of Chamberlain, Russell, Jordan, and James. Elgin inspired so many to dream the impossible and he remains an inspiration today, most especially to our student-athletes and coaches. As they are in the midst of writing their own piece of history, it is up to all of us to support their efforts, fuel their dreams, and help them unleash their potential in re-defining what is possible. We need only ask: who will be the next Elgin? Thank you to the Red Tie Planning Committee for your energy and inspiration in the development of tonight’s event. I would like to extend an very special thanks to our chairs, Dino and Terry Rossi. Their commitment to and enthusiasm for our student-athletes and coaches has been nothing short of outstanding. Thank you for joining us in taking our program to new levels through your financial and visible support of our student-athletes and University. Go Seattle U!

Bill Hogan Director of Athletics

THE RED TIE CELEBRATION 3

May 31, 2014 Dear Friends, Welcome to the second annual Red Tie Celebration in support of Seattle University’s 300-plus student-athletes. We are honored to be the co-chairs for this special evening and know it will be a night to remember. We would like to thank Anne and Matt Moran, last year’s inaugural chairs, along with all of this year’s volunteers that have made tonight possible. Basketball fans still reminisce about this year’s honoree, Elgin Baylor, leading Seattle University to the 1958 NCAA Final Four and national title game against the Kentucky Wildcats and how, as a legend of the NBA, he became the forbearer of a game played above the rim. Elgin Baylor had talents that had never been seen before on the court. Over the years, Elgin and his wife Elaine have graciously given their time in support of our student-athletes, and we are all grateful for their continued commitment to SU. Seattle University has long set a high standard for holistic excellence in its graduates, and championship athletics is an extension of this pledge. Thank you to the leadership and foresight of University President Stephen Sundborg, S.J., who returned the University to NCAA Division I just a few short years ago. This unprecedented move would not have been possible had it not been for alumni, friends and supporters like you, having been with us every step of the way, and to our remarkable student-athletes, who represent the university at its best. As 2013 WAC Head Coach of the Year Joan Bonvicini asserts, ”Our sports programs are the front porch of the university; it’s the first thing the public will see. So, let’s build champions.” That said, here is to a meaningful night in support of our student-athletes both past, present and future. For Seattle University,

Dino and Terry Rossi

ELGIN BAYLOR

BY TOM MESCHERY

The first time I saw him play, he was a senior at Seattle University, and was hovering like a bird, having just snatched a rebound out of the air and throwing a pass from the baseline, the length of the court without looking to a teammate sprinting past the mid-court-stripe who easily scored unguarded. I was a senior playing basketball in high school, who knew what I was watching wasn’t possible, that it must have been my imagination, something my teachers said I had too much of, which was okay with me, because if I didn’t play well in college and never made it into the NBA, there were other careers I could aspire to where an imagination would be helpful, although, at the time, I couldn’t imagine one.
