Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent secondary school with a mission to prepare our students to participate effectively in modern society. We, therefore, seek a diversified student body and faculty. We offer a demanding college-preparatory curriculum integrating the arts and emphasizing a global perspective. We utilize the resources of our urban environment to extend our classrooms, to enhance our programs, and to engage our students in public service. Most of all, we seek to graduate motivated young men and women of talent and integrity who are prepared to contribute productively to a changing world. letter to the community Dear Friends of Seattle Academy, There are a hundred paths to a good school but only one path to a Great School, and this is the path that a community must travel together. There is no other way. And this community has always traveled the path together. In 2010-2011, your gifts to the Annual Fund and the Financial Aid Endowment supplemented the school’s annual budget for Financial Aid to make it possible to award $1,957,424 in need-based aid to 130 students. Your gifts helped us reach and serve more students—it’s that simple. Last year, our students reached new levels of Participation and Excellence. Eighty percent of our Middle School students participated in one or more sports. Between the Middle School and the Upper School we had 47 athletic teams. The Upper School performance of Hairspray boasted a cast of 57 students in the nation’s first high school production of the popular musical. In the Spring, our Speech and Debate Team won their fourth consecutive state championship and our Advanced Vocal group, The Onions, won first place at the Reno Jazz Festival where they competed against significantly larger schools from around the western United States. Our Upper School Robotics Team completed its third successful season culminating in a trip to the World Championships in St. Louis. The Seattle Academy Boys’ Varsity Basketball and Girls’ Varsity Soccer teams won the Emerald City League Championships, while our Arts Department was awarded the title of Nation’s Outstanding Arts Program by the Arts Schools Network. In June, 75 young people graduated from Seattle Academy prepared for the challenges of college and the adventures of life. Thanks to our Culture of Performance, our graduates are a desirable addition to a variety of collegiate programs as demonstrated by the Class of 2011. These students were awarded an exceptional $6 million in merit-based scholarships. We’re frequently asked, “How are we able to back up our commitment to Participation and Excellence by consistently saying yes to emerging requests like more teams, more shows, increased financial aid, faculty support and training, and new programs?” We’re able to say yes because of your strong and ongoing support. The Annual Fund raised over $900,000 to help deliver our mission to prepare students for college and life. This incredible commitment from you—our current families, trustees, faculty and staff, alumni, alumni families, and grandparents—is a testament to your belief in our ability to deliver that mission every day.
