Sea Creatures Playground, Carkeek Park Sliding through the

Alki Playground and Whale Tail Park Kids will dive into this

ocean-themed playground, which includes a play structure shaped like a sandcastle, a climbable boat, a whale’s tail sculpture and a sand play area. The playground is best for younger kids (ages 1-6), but keep an eye out, because it is not fenced. Walk across the playfield to a second playground that’s fun for bigger kids (ages 5-10). 5817 SW Lander St., Seattle 98116

Baseball Playground, Shoreview Park Batter up! This small play-

ground (ages 4-8) offers the novelty of climbing on a giant ball, glove and bat — and it’s next to a ballfield. The park is a local favorite that has a second playground (ages 2-8), tennis courts, paved loop, wooded trails, a creek and a dog park. Note: The baseball playground is on the uphill (south) part of the park, near the tennis courts. The second playground is on the lower level, accessible by stairs or ramp. 17229 3rd Ave. NW, Shoreline 98133

Hit the ice

Skating for Beginners Though many kids learn to skate as young as 3, children and adults alike can learn at any time. Here are some tips for getting out on the ice. 1. Skates must fit snugly, no matter the skater’s age. Get fitted at the rink. It will make your skater feel confident, while learning on the ice. 2. Helmets are a good idea for children and for novice adults. Rain pants or snowsuits will make things more comfortable for kids – there’s a lot of falling down involved. 3. Tell your beginners to bend their knees – it’ll make it easier to balance and move. 4. Don’t rush the learning. Let your beginners grip the wall until they decide they are ready to go it alone across the ice. 5. Consider skating lessons. Most year-round rinks have them for both children and adults. 6. Enjoy! There’s nothing as satisfying as watching kids (or yourself) master a skill and go from wobbly to confident.

another time. Practice. Aha, your beginner has mastered balance and pedaling. Now let them practice as much as possible to learn steering and braking. All these elements work together to create an enjoyable experience. Family bike rides. Now that your little learner is confident in their ability to wrangle a two-wheeler, make it a treat to travel with the family. Before taking a bike ride around the block, though, go over traffic and safety rules. Parents should run the route ahead of time, preparing for any challenges along the way.

C

oasting down the street on a shiny two-wheeler is a rite of passage for most kids. Adults may remember the rattly training wheels and anticipation of falling to the side, but nowadays training wheels are a thing of the past. Beginners learn to kick, coast and balance on specially made coaster bikes or on bikes with pedals removed. This new method helps children learn to balance and adjust their bodies to the two-wheeled apparatus beneath them. Here are some tips for your new learner’s first unwieldly bike rides. Time and space. Kids need time to get used to

pedal-less bikes. Make sure your beginner has a chance to try their coaster on the driveway, at a park or in an empty school parking lot. Sit and glide, steer and push. . . the more time spent on the bike, the more comfortable it will be. When to pedal. Once your child has mastered coasting for 10 seconds, without touching their feet to the ground, it’s time to put the pedals on or get a bike with pedals. First, allow your bike rider to experiment with the pedals and get used to placing their feet atop them. If it doesn’t work out the first few times, take the pedals off or switch back to the coaster and try again

Top rope climbing at Mount Erie with The Mountaineers.

Ready to Rock Rock climbing is an amazing sport for kids. They challenge themselves mentally and physically, build confidence and trust in others and acquire the skills to experience nature in a unique and intimate way. However, the dangers are real. Here are some tips to get your little climber started. 1. Start by bouldering. Bouldering is

a type of climbing that’s close to the ground and doesn’t require a rope. It’s the simplest way to start, because all you need is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag—which you can rent from most gyms. Choose a gym with an extensive space dedicated to beginners and children. 2. Rope climbing. Parents should learn first! Some rock gyms offer rope climbing as well as bouldering. If you want to rope climb with your child, you will need to learn to belay. Ask whether your climbing gym offers belay classes. Better yet, enroll in a climbing course at The Mountaineers (mountaineers.org).

3. Learn and follow the safety rules. Climbing can be dangerous.

Parents and children should learn the basic safety rules and follow them without question. For example, don’t let children play or climb under other climbers—even from only a few feet up, a falling human can cause serious injury to someone below.

4. Keep it positive and lowpressure. Let your children set

5. Learn the ropes yourself.

CONNECTING » with NATURE Hikes for all seasons

W

hether your kid runs ahead like a fleet-footed mountain goat or slides along like a spotted slug, here are three hikes per season where you can enjoy the journey with kids in tow.

A winter excursion to Gold Creek Pond

WINTER

SPRING

SUMMER

FA L L

Discovery Park, Seattle

Grand Ridge Park, Issaquah

Rattlesnake Ledge, North Bend

Tolt-MacDonald Park, Carnation

Seattle’s largest park (534 acres) offers beaches, meadows, ponds and woodlands along a web of hiking trails. Enjoy views of Puget Sound, Mount Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. 3Easy. Tip: Walk along the beach to see West Point Lighthouse or visit the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, a free Native American art gallery and conference center.

Seward Park, Seattle

Dash Point State Park, Federal Way

This state park has a broad beach and many miles of hiking trails to explore. 3Easy. 11 miles of trails. Tip: Bring bikes and explore the flat trails or search for ocean animals on the beach at low tide.

Farrel-McWhirter Farm and Park, Redmond Spring is a great time to visit the animals -- bunnies, chickens, sheep and pigs. Keep an ear out for the “hee-haw” of the donkey, too. There are miles of woodsy trails to roam, or throw rocks into the stream, balance across logs and cage yourself into long-rooted trees. 3Easy/Moderate. About 2 miles of short trails.

Heybrook Lookout, Stevens Pass

After a steep 1.3-mile climb through woods dense with chipmunks, arrive at the end of the trail and breathtaking views. Turn around and climb the stairs, and you’ll have an even better view of the surrounding peaks. 3Moderate. 2.6 miles.

Before You Go

Take a meandering climb through lush woods. If you make it to the top, there’s a viewpoint that looks over the Snoqualmie Valley. (Stay back from the edge.) Afterward, cool off in nearby Rattlesnake Lake. 3Easy/Moderate. 1.9 miles one way.

Denny Creek, North Bend

If you can make it uphill through the woods to the 1.1-mile mark, pack extra clothes and maybe towels. There’s a spot where Denny Creek makes a natural waterslide over slippery rocks. Walk another mile to see Keekwulee Falls. 3Easy/Moderate. 1.1 mile one way to Denny Creek waterslide, 1.8 miles one way to Keewulee Falls.

Myrtle Falls, Paradise, Mount Rainier National Park This stroller-friendly jaunt is one of a number of easy hikes to be found among Mount Rainier’s alpine meadows. Blooming with wildflowers and featuring a 72-foot waterfall, it’s the perfect place for lots of fun and great pictures. 3Easy. 1 mile one way.

Perhaps the highlight of this hike is traversing the 500-foot suspension bridge over the Snoqualmie River. Or it may be playing on the shore: throwing rocks, building dams and floating boats on the smaller streams. 3Easy. 12 miles roundtrip. Tip: Rent a yurt, camp out or bring your RV to extend your stay.

Carkeek Park, Seattle

The best time to visit Carkeek is in November and December, when a run of Chum salmon makes its way up Piper’s Creek, which is flanked by a stroller-friendly gravel trail. More rugged back trails offer a tour of the woods. 3Easy. 3.5 miles roundtrip.

Gold Creek Pond, Snoqualmie Pass

Huckleberry bushes and fiery red maples put on a fine show of color along this stroller-friendly loop. If you know where to look, you might spy spawning Kokanee salmon (red, with green heads.) Bring lunch and picnic by the picturesque mountain pond. 3Easy. 1 mile roundtrip.

Pack lots of water and snacks, a first-aid kit, extra layers, and sunscreen. If you are going into the wilderness, take gear that will help you survive overnight if you get stuck. The Pacific Northwest has its share of wildlife, so be aware of your surroundings and make noise while hiking the trails to let them know you are in the vicinity. Share the map with your kids before you set off, and go over safety rules, including “Stay on the trail and if you get lost, stay put and shout for help.”

GOLD CREEK: COURTESY OF JASMIN THANKACHEN. SAFETY: ISTOCK

Spy winter ducks from the stroller-friendly lakefront trail, or venture uphill to explore the dripping moss-covered corners of an old growth forest. 3Easy. 2.4 miles roundtrip. Tip: Stop at the playground and zoom down on the zip line.

Experience spring in the cedar bog at this lush park, featuring a 600-foot wetland boardwalk and a large bridge over Canyon Creek. 3Easy. 7 miles of trails. Tip: Watch for horses on the trail; this is an equestrian-friendly park.

Float on a boat One of the great things about living in Washington is the access to water all around. Whether it’s Puget Sound, the Pacific Ocean or one of the many lakes and rivers, there’s always water fun awaiting.

Sensory friendly outings for kids For some kids, including those living with autism, the hardest part of seeing a play or a movie can be the theater itself – too loud, too much contrast between dark and bright, too long sitting still. With this in mind, some arts organizations offer “sensory-friendly” shows – lower sound, smaller crowds, house lights lit and an easy-going attitude – so that it’s fine for kids to make a bit of noise and move around. Theatres also offer sensory support equipment like fidget toys, earplugs and noise-canceling earmuffs. Furthermore, staff provide storybooks outlining the theatergoer experience and prompts that serve as a guide to lighting and sound cues that may be overwhelming.

For sensory programs around the Seattle area, check these arts organizations for more information.D

Hearty hikers will enjoy a trek up Mount Erie for sweeping views out to sea. For easier trails, explore Washington Park’s many nature paths. Float in the lake at Pearrygin Lake State Park in Winthrop.

The Olympic Peninsula Known for its rugged ocean beaches, lush green rainforests, mountain peaks, hundreds of miles of trails and beautiful waterfalls, the peninsula offers much to see and do. Stay at one of the many lodges, cabins or resorts, ranging from rustic retreats to spa getaways. Walk the beach to the Tree of Life at Kalaloch, find the largest spruce tree in the world near Lake Quinault, sail a boat on Lake Crescent, or take a dip in the hot springs at Sol Duc. Make memories on the Olympic Peninsula year after year, in every season. olympicpeninsula.org Winthrop Take the scenic route on North Cascade Highway to the town of Winthrop, where the wild, wild west lives on. Grab your cowboy hat and ride horses at a local stable, play by the water at Pearrygin Lake State Park, or treat yourself to a

large scoop of ice cream and mini-golf. Winthrop delivers a quaint vacation with a healthy dose of old Americana. winthropwashington.com

Skagit Valley Skagit Valley isn’t just about the tulip festival. The valley has so much more to offer families looking for a nearby getaway. Rent a tiny cabin in Mt. Vernon, stop at the Padilla Bay Interpretive Center to experience the touch tanks, hike to Craft Island at low tide to check out anemones and crabs. A short distance away is Larabee State Park, where you can explore rock formations and Teddy Bear Cove. Eat farm-to-table foods, pick fresh berries and indulge in homemade treats from local retailers. Walk away from this vacation with a new appreciation for rural life. visitskagitvalley.com

Consistent with that goal, Childish Things makes selling easy; walk-in selling six days a week, buying on the spot for store credit or cash. And because they know that parents have time limits on shopping trips, they’ve focused on creating a shopper-friendly store staffed with team members trained to help with the confusing world of children’s products.
