commit

connect

Growing a profitable practice in a highly competitive environment is a challenge faced by specialists and restorative dentists alike. We all need a steady flow of patients seeking the highest quality care. Foundational to the delivery of that care is a commitment to interdisciplinary treatment. But even though we believe we have that commitment, we still must connect deeply with each other and with our patients, and work together to achieve our goals. Sometimes, our own personalities get in the way of achieving a collaborative relationship.

At this year’s Summit, we will dive deeply into the skill set that specialists and restorative dentists need to become partners in leading their teams to powerful and prosperous working relationships. For the first time at a Summit, directors will have the opportunity to bring along restorative dentists from their study clubs. Together, we will address the communication and relationship issues that are crucial to the success of our practices and our study clubs, and develop actionable solutions.

collaborate

 Restorative dentists will also learn from one of the most knowledgeable clinicians on aesthetic dentistry in the world. Dr. Christian Coachman will present an interactive workshop on Digital Smile Design. Clinicians participating in this two-part session will gain valuable insight into the aesthetic diagnosis and treatment planning software developed by Dr. Coachman to streamline communication between the restorative dentist, the patient and the interdisciplinary team.

friday, july 17 PARTNERSHIP IS THE NEW LEADERSHIP Mr. Ty Bennett Leadership drives the team, whether it’s office staff, study club members or clinicians working together on an interdisciplinary case. What stops us as leaders from making an impact? It isn’t the team, it’s us — we get in our own way. The three biggest stumbling blocks we face as leaders are self-interest, ego and apathy. Leadership is not about us — it’s about the people we lead. Those of us who are willing to place other people’s interests first, to think outwardly and to serve others are the ones who will have the greatest influence. In this entertaining and impacting keynote, Ty will explain why partnership is the new leadership and teach us the skills we need to connect with others such that we become better and more influential leaders in our practices, our study clubs and our communities. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Grasp the importance of partnering with employees, study club members and clinicians on the interdisciplinary team. • Discuss the characteristics and skills needed to lead and influence others. • Change behaviors that stand in the way of becoming a leader that people want to follow. STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS AND BUILDING ENDURING PARTNERSHIPS Dr. Brian DesRoches The word change is derived from Old French and Latin and refers to an exchange. In essence, change is an exchange in the patterns people have used to relate and communicate. As a society, we are experiencing significant pattern changes, and dentistry is just one of many professions being impacted by them. Despite the emotional power of these changes, there is a unique opportunity to positively influence our outcomes for mutual benefit. However, to do so involves a different way of thinking about relationships and a focus on openness, curiosity and collaboration. To quote a popular movie phrase, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” This presentation will introduce innovations in relationship building and communication that are the outcomes of 21st century research in neuroscience, interpersonal neurobiology and psychophysiology. We will not only learn how our openness and curiosity, combined with a focus on collaboration, can strengthen our professional relationships and build the internal foundation for enduring partnerships; we will also be able to implement specific skills that support this process.

Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Employ the Social Engagement System to generate the essential internal experience individuals are seeking. • Use three neuroscience-based communication skills to optimize your positive influence and create mutually beneficial outcomes with others. • Positively manage your internal state despite the natural anxiety inherent in open communication. THE RESTORATIVE DENTIST/SPECIALIST RELATIONSHIP — AS SEEN FROM THE OTHER SIDE Dr. Michael Cohen and Dr. Brian DesRoches This workshop will address some of the most difficult issues in professional relationships that often go unresolved because of the anxiety of confrontation and the potential for hurt feelings. The objective is to create open lines of communication between the specialist and the restorative dentist, with greater sensitivity to each other’s ideas and preferences. We will separate into two groups to discuss the answers to some challenging questions and prepare to share our thoughts and ideas generated when the entire group reconvenes. Discussion points will include implementation strategies, challenges and opportunities. As a director, your discussion areas may include: How is the restorative dentist’s referral to a specialist beneficial over and above their clinical expertise? What are the components of an ideal referral relationship? How can the restorative dentist improve the delivery of care to patients? As a restorative dentist, your discussion areas may include: What do you want to see change in your relationship with the specialist that would benefit you and your practice? What do you look for in an ideal referral relationship? What are the characteristics of the specialist you love? What does the specialist have to be doing to earn referrals? Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Understand the components of an ideal referral relationship from both sides. • Assess your own communication skills and determine whether improvements are needed.

[For Directors] DIRECTOR NETWORKING SESSION Dr. Michael Cohen As professional educators we rarely have an opportunity to simply sit and discuss new ideas, frustrations and the overall direction our clubs are headed. This informal environment will allow us to discuss those topics each of us believes to be most important. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Implement solutions to assist in a particular area of need in your study club. • Develop plans for dealing with obstacles when they occur. [For Members] THE COMPLETE DIGITAL WORKFLOW FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE INTERDISCIPLINARY DENTISTRY — DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN, PART I Dr. Christian Coachman This lecture and interactive workshop will explore the protocols that allow us to focus on improving efficiency, production, predictability and quality — elevating patient satisfaction. Over the course of these two days we will discuss the Asynchronous Communication Protocol for daily interdisciplinary treatment planning, digital orthodontics for better restorative outcomes, the complete digital planning and lab work for predictable implant rehabilitation, 3D Smile Frame Project (improving dento-facial harmony with fewer aesthetic adjustments) and beautiful anterior, monolithic, CAD/CAM restorations — eliminating wax-ups and layering. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Implement an efficient protocol for predictable outcomes. • Understand the advantages of virtual wax-ups vs. conventional wax-ups. • Increase case acceptance through the Emotional Dentistry approach. • Outline the mock-up strategy and Digital Smile Design communication process.

saturday, july 18 THE POWER OF COLLABORATION Dr. Nassir F. Marrouche Dr. Nassir F. Marrouche is an internationally renowned cardiac electrophysiologist who recognizes the need for the medical community to be more proactive as opposed to reacting to medical events. Years ago, Dr. Marrouche initiated a collaboration with other disciplines outside of the medical community to develop new technologies to benefit patients. In this compelling keynote he shares with us the innovative start of his team at the Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research and Management Center (CARMA) at the University of Utah, which developed the technology to quantify the scarring and fibrosis of the heart, which is predictive of the risk of stroke. Today, CARMA, under the leadership of Dr. Marrouche, continues to provide progressive strides on the cutting edge to early detection and individualized treatment and management of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation affects millions of Americans and greatly increases the risk of stroke and sudden death. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Grasp the importance of collaboration between healthcare disciplines for better patient outcomes. • Understand the relationship between fibrosis, atrial fibrillation and the risk of stroke. • Describe the Utah I-IV classification system. • Recognize when advanced diagnostics to predict the risk of stroke are indicated for yourself, your family members and your patients.

THE BESPOKE STUDY CLUBTM — A CUSTOM-TAILORED APPROACH TO CE Mr. Greg Tice Over the past few years there has been an explosion of CE courses, both live and online. Many of these may have an initial appeal but are in fact generic, one-size-fits-all offerings that do nothing more than push out information that is rarely incorporated into everyday practice. In contrast, the Seattle Study Club® model provides the opportunity to custom tailor the learning experience to the needs of clinicians in the club with consistency, connection and support; allowing for an expansion of the armamentarium. To fulfill the promise of our study clubs, we must first determine members’ needs and interests, and then provide high-level, evidence-based programming that spurs the growth of learning in the desired areas. Involving members in the development of the study club curriculum is vital to this process. During this workshop, we will discuss study club programming in roundtable format, with each group addressing a specific topic. Table topics may include: • What assessment tools should we use to insure that our clubs’ educational offerings will remain relevant and exciting for our members long-term? • How can our directors be better study club leaders? • What new and unique programs have been incorporated into our club’s curriculum that should be shared with all? • What topics should be added to better meet the present and future needs of our members? • How do we create a culture that results in greater ownership, participation and enthusiasm? • What can we do to attract younger practitioners to our study clubs? Their wants and perceived needs as practitioners may be different from our longer-term members. • How can we separate our clubs from the rest of the pack to create a stronger attraction and greater visibility in our communities? Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Refocus your community and your club on interdisciplinary treatment. • Influence the nature and quality of continuing dental education in your community. • Ensure the longevity and vitality of your local club by assessing and adapting to your members’ evolving needs.

[For Directors] A WORLD OF CHANGE FOR THE SPECIALTY PRACTICE Dr. Michael Cohen In this session specialists will create and discuss strategies to continue to thrive in the coming years despite dramatic changes in the marketplace. A number of ideas will come from clinicians who have already devoted a great deal of time to innovative thinking. Others will introduce classic ideas which, when implemented properly, will reap great rewards. The goal is to find opportunities for win-win outcomes with our referring offices. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Understand the changes happening in the profession and how they may affect you. • Navigate your professional future using the powerful tools acquired. [For Members] THE COMPLETE DIGITAL WORKFLOW FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE INTERDISCIPLINARY DENTISTRY — DIGITAL SMILE DESIGN, PART II Dr. Christian Coachman WRAP UP AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES Dr. Brian DesRoches The program will conclude with a summation of salient points generated during the course of the weekend. Brian will not only review the highlights but also discuss implementation strategies for moving forward. Upon completion of this program, you should be able to: • Recall and reinforce the major themes from the weekend. • Develop your next steps and action items to initiate the changes discussed.
