WELCOME TO THE 2019-20 WHL SEASON FROM
WHL COMMISSIONER
Calgary, Alta. – The dawn of a new Western Hockey League season is here and we are thrilled to be witness to the world’s premier junior hockey players as they showcase their talents in each of our 22 markets across Western Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This marks the 54th season in WHL history, and as always, the WHL Player Experience is paramount for WHL Clubs. On and off the ice, WHL Clubs are entrenched in ensuring WHL players receive world-class coaching and competition together with North America’s most comprehensive WHL Scholarship and education program. The WHL’s Players First support services continue to allow players to develop in a safe and positive environment. In the 25th year of the WHL Scholarship, records were shattered for the sixth consecutive season, as 405 WHL graduates accessed their WHL Scholarship during the 2018-19 academic year. The WHL Scholarship continues to provide an unparalleled educational avenue for WHL graduates driven to achieve their academic goals. Of the 405 WHL graduates who accessed their WHL Scholarship,
Ron Robison Commissioner
close to 200continued their hockey development by playing Canadian University hockey at the U SPORTS level this past season. The 2019 NHL Draft also provided reason for celebration as 28 WHL players, including seven in the first round, heard their name called on home ice in Vancouver. The 28 WHL players represent the largest number of players selected from any one developmental league in the world at the 2019 NHL Draft, reaffirming the WHL’s position as a leading producer of NHL talent. The 2019-20 WHL season will see many high calibre events on display in WHL territory. The WHL Cup will return to Calgary in October 2019, showcasing the top prospects in the system from the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft class. The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series lands in Saskatoon and Prince Albert in November, as Team WHL faces the Russian National Team in a preview of the 2020 World Junior Championship. Finally, the Memorial Cup, Presented by Kia, returns to Western Canada for the third time in five years, as the Canadian Hockey League’s best from the WHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League take to the ice in Kelowna in May 2020.

The Western Hockey League started with just seven teams based in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1966. Today, the WHL has representation in all four Western Canadian provinces and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. The WHL now consists of 22 member Clubs with 17 based in Canadian markets and five in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. The WHL is a member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) whose membership is comprised of three major junior hockey leagues: Ontatio Hockey League (OHL), Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL). At the conclusion of each League’s playoffs, the CHL hosts the Memorial Cup Presented by Kia, a national championship tournament involving each of the three Leagues’ Champions and the tournament host. The WHL is regarded as one of the finest development Leagues in the world today. Each season, the WHL is one of the top Leagues from which players are selected from in the NHL Draft. Currently, 20% of all NHL players are graduates of the WHL. The WHL is also a leading provider of post-secondary scholarships with over 400 scholarships awarded each year to current and graduate WHL players, more than any other League in North America.

Welcome to Kent
…and to the 2019-20 Seattle Thunderbirds season! We are so excited to have you join us for another exciting season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. The year’s home opener will be at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 21 as the T-Birds take on the Kamloops Blazers. This will be an exciting season under the direction of head coach Matt O’Dette, now in his third season. There will be several new faces this year, but also many key players returning. Matthew Wedman, selected by the Florida Panthers this past June in the NHL Draft, led the T-Birds in scoring last year. He is back for his final season. Henrik Rybinski, also selected by the Panthers in the NHL Draft this past June, will join Wedman up front to provide a dynamic one-two punch. Goalie Roddy Ross, selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2019 NHL Draft, will be counted on between the pipes, and we will watch to see him build on his impressive performance last season. The defensive trio of Tyrel Bauer, Simon Kubicek and Cade McNelly will all be ranked by NHL Central Scouting for the 2020 NHL Draft. Payton Mount, entering his second season, will also see a lot of attention from NHL Scouts this year. Watch for some rookies to have an impact this season, including forwards Kai Uchacz, Lucas Ciona and Conner Roulette, who were all selected in the 2018 Bantam Draft. Returning this year is the T-Birds’ popular two-for-Tuesday promotion sponsored by Chick-fil-A. Fans will be able to enjoy two-for-one specials on tickets, hot dogs, popcorn, soda and beer. The popular Dave and Buster’s Pub Nights are back for four select games this season. The Fred Meyer Turkey Shoot and Ham Shoot are always a fun time as well. The Fred Meyer Teddy Bear Toss presented by WARM 106.9 always sells out, so don’t miss it! All the teddy bears donated are given to local hospitals and fire and police departments to help comfort kids in stressful situations. It’s a fun night for a great cause. Kent is incredibly proud of accesso ShoWare Center. It is a state-of-the-art arena with 6,125 seats, 20 suites and Heritage Club seating. The arena offers unsurpassed hockey sightlines throughout. Don’t forget to stop by Kent Station, a contemporary, urban shopping village with a variety of dining options for pre- and post-game gatherings. I also encourage you to check out historic downtown Kent, where you’ll find more entertainment and dining choices. No matter what you choose, you’ll have more reasons to come back to Kent for your next hockey game. Go Birds!

TALE OF THE TAPE
REGULAR SEASON SERIES: SEATTLE 3-4-0-1 | PORTLAND 5-0-0-3
THE LAST TIME... For just the fourth time this season, Portland came back after trailing through 40 minutes to win its 40th game. The Hawks scored five straight goals in the second and third periods to eventually beat the Thunderbirds 5-3 at home ice to improve the home point streak to 22 straight. Blake Lyda stopped a career high 49 saves. Jarvis, Mount and Kukuca all recorded three points on Friday night. Gricius took a game high nine shots.
#24 | SETH JARVIS Jarvis enters the game on a seven game point streak, ranking him inside the top five in goals and points. He has 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points in 18 games in 2020 and is now on pace to reach 105 points this season. No WHL player has put up 100 points during his 17 year old season since Nolan Patrick did so in 2015-16 with the Brandon Wheat Kings.
#18 | ANDREJ KUKUCA With 15 more points than his closest teammate, Kukuca recently reached 50 points when he scored his second hat trick of the season. The 20 year old has 110 points in 115 career games, plus seven playoff points. He ranks in the top ten in league shots and recorded three points last night against Portland.
NEWS AND NOTES X MARKS THE SPOT... The Winterhawks became the first WHL team to clinch a spot in the 2020 WHL playoffs when they earned a point in an overtime loss to Spokane on February 4. It’s the Hawks 11th straight trips to the postseason. Last year, the Prince Albert Raiders were the first to clinch a playoff spot on February 5 and they won the Ed Chynoweth Cup. Edmonton, Everett, Kamloops, Lethbridge, Spokane, Prince Albert and Lethbridge have all recently clinched a playoff spot, too. SENSATIONAL SETH... Winterhawks second year forward Seth Jarvis was named the WHL’s On the Run Player of the Week for his nine point week ending on February 16. He notched his third five point game in 2020 with a goal and four primary asssists against Moose Jaw. He was also the WHL’s Player of the Month after leading the WHL with 29 points in January, second with 11 goals, 18 assists and +17 rating. ESPN’s Chris Peters tabbed Jarvis as the 20th best prospect available for the 2020 NHL Draft, TSN’s Bob McKenzie recently ranked No.24 as the 24th ranked prospect on his 2020 NHL Draft list and The Athletic nabbed him 26th. In 122 career regular season games, he has 125 points (51G-74A) and currently sits tied for second place in WHL scoring. He was one of 40 players (24 forwards) who participated in the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospect game in Hamilton, Ontario. Jarvis, a former 11th overall Bantam pick, became the 17th Winterhawk to participate in the event this decade and the first since Henri Jokiharju and Cody Glass attended the event in 2017. Jokiharju was named the Player of the Game for Team Cherry. Twelve CHL players from last year’s game in Red Deer were chosen in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, led by Chicago Blackhawks 3rd overall pick Kirby Dach (Saskatoon). JOHNNY ON THE SPOT... The Portland Winterhawks captain captured his first ever WHL On the Run Player of the Week honors after scoring two goals and seven assists for nine points in three games from February 2-9. Johnny Ludvig, a Kamloops, B.C. product, leaped to the top of the Western Conference in defensive points (57), power play goals (8), and shots (190). Ludvig is a point-per-game player this season and his +42 rating puts him in a tie for sixth on the Hawks all-time +/- leaderboard among defensemen for a single season since the statistic was kept. WHAT A RUN... Portland had a 21 game point streak (19-0-1-1) from December 3, 2019 through January 25, 2020. It was snapped in Everett, WA on the last day of January. Portland was two games shy of tying a franchise record and Western Conference record of 23 straight games than ended in February 2014.
GAME #56 of 68 2019-20
BY THE NUMBERS
OTHER NOTABLES... The Winterhawks scored a season high 11 goals against Moose Jaw on Sunday... the most goals in one game since Portland beat Seattle 11-3 on March 10, 2012. Portland went a perfect 6-0-0-0 against the East Division this year. Seattle has only scored seven goals in its last four road games and they are 2-for-18 on the PP in their last five games. Seattle scored its first shorthanded goal of the season on Tuesday against Moose Jaw.

LET’S GO SCOUTING... The Portland Winterhawks are proud to announce five players have been named to NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft. The Winterhawks had the most representatives on the list players named on the list among the 22 Western Hockey League teams. Winterhawks forwards Seth Jarvis (19), Simon Knak (61) and Cross Hanas (65) were all ranked inside the top-100 of North American skaters. Defenseman Jonas Brøndberg (107) and second-year forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme (165) round out the quintet of Winterhawks on the list. In total, 51 WHL players were named on the midterm rankings, including at least one representative from 19 of the 22 WHL member clubs. Fourteen competed in the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. MAKING HISTORY... The Hawks are 23-1-2-2 at home this season, which is a better start at home than the 2012-13 team (22-3-0-2) that won the WHL Championship and won a WHL-best 57 games. The Winterhawks also only needed 55 games to reach 40 wins during the 2019-20 regular season, which is fourth fastest in team history... 50 games was the fastest ever in 1997-98 and 2012-13. IN THE SYSTEM... Earlier this month, the Winterhawks announced the signings of three prospects. Defensemen Josh Mori and Brody Tallman and forward Aidan Litke signed their WHL Standard Player Agreements. Mori captains St. George’s School (7G-24A in 26 games) in the Vancouver area. Tallman has played for the prestigious Lethbridge Hurricanes Midget Hockey Club and produced (16G-43A in 68 games) since he was drafted by the Winterhawks in the eighth round of the 2018 Bantam Draft. Litke is a two-time Neely Cup Training Camp Champion and he was a standout for RINK Hockey Academy Prep (17G-14A in 20 games) this year. After his terrific start, Litke earned a promotion to juniors with OCN Blizzard (10G-6A in 19 games) and he is already second among MJHL 16 year olds in scoring. GOLDEN IN OSTRAVA... Joel Hofer and Hockey Canada beat Russia 4-3 in Ostrava, Czech Republic at the 2020 World Juniors to clinch Canada’s 18th gold medal. Hofer was recognized as the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament going 5-0-0-0 with a 1.60 goals-against-average and a .939 save percentage and one shutout. The media also named the Winnipeg native on the tournament All-Star team and Hockey Canada twice named him the Player of the Game. He made 35 saves in the gold medal game and became the first Winterhawk netminder to win gold at the Top Division. He is also the ninth Winterhawk to win the event while playing in Portland that season... The first since Caleb Jones won gold with Team USA in 2017. Henri Jokiharju (Finland, 2019) was the most recent gold medalist, but he technically did so as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. SWISS SENSATION... Rookie forward Simon Knak made Team Switzerland’s 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship team as a 17 year old, meaning he could play in the event for three consecutive years. He was Switzerland’s Player of the Game during a group play match against Finland on New Years Eve. He scored two goals (against Slovakia and Finland) and took 11 shots during the tournament, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 3-1 loss to Russia. THE TOP TEN... The Winterhawks were in third place on the recent CHL Top Ten rankings, which marks the 12th time they have been ranked inside the top ten. The Edmonton Oil Kings (5th) and Everett Silvertips (7th) are the other WHL teams on the leader board, while Lethbridge was an honorable mention. The Hawks are 3-2-0-1 on the season against the ranked opponents. A DECADE TO REMEMBER... The Portland Winterhawks won the most regular season games (455) and playoff games (86; 27 more wins than second place Edmonton) during the last decade, which is the most among any CHL organization. Nic Petan (442), Ty Rattie (423) and Brendan Leipsic (381) also finished the decade in first, second and fifth respectively in WHL scoring [includes playoffs] from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Derrick Pouliot led all WHL defenseman with 278 points in 332 games. NEW CAPTAIN IN TOWN... The Winterhawks named third-year defenseman Johnny Ludvig captain for the 2019-20 season, taking over captaincy duties from Cody Glass who is now playing with the Vegas Golden Knights after four seasons in Portland. Ludvig becomes the organization’s 44th captain in team history (since moving to Oregon). It was a busy summer for Ludvig seeing as the Kamloops, BC resident was selected in the third round (69th overall) by the Florida Panthers in the 2019 NHL Draft. BELLOWS CASHES IN TWICE... The New York Islanders called up their 2016 first round draft pick in February and he laced up for his first NHL game on February 4 against the Dallas Stars. He recorded an assist in his debut, but the fun didn’t end there. Two days later, the Winterhawks former 40-goal scorer in the WHL netted his FIRST and SECOND

career NHL goals against the Los Angeles Kings. His second goal was the eventual game-winning tally in the third period. He became the 127th Winterhawks to appear in the NHL this season and third former Hawk this year to debut. ROOKIE PHENOM... Forward Seth Jarvis recorded 39 points (16-23--39) during his rookie season. That was the most by a 16-year-old Winterhawk during the Mike Johnston era (a tenure in which Johnston coached Cody Glass, Ty Rattie, Nic Petan, Brendan Leipsic, and Chase De Leo all as 16 year olds). Memorial Cup Champion and Stanley Cup winner Andrew Ference (1995-1996) was the last 16-year-old Winterhawk to score 40+ points in one season. INTERNATIONAL HAWKS... Seth Jarvis (Canada), Cross Hanas (USA), and Simon Knak (Switzerland) represented their countries and the Portland Winterhawks in early August at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. The best 2002-born players compete for their country at the tournament. Winnipeg native Seth Jarvis paced the way with four points (2G-2A) during the five game event en route to a silver medal. Hanas played a top six forward role for the United States after an impressive showing at the Select 17 development camp and Simon Knak captained the Swiss for his second straight summer. All three forward are ranked by Central Scouting as Top 65 NHL Prospects for the upcoming 2020 NHL Draft. LEAGUE OF HIS OWN... Cross Hanas participated in the Select 17 development camp that featured 180 American skaters and four other unsigned Winterhawks prospects. Through five camp games, Hanas led all players with 13 points (4G-9A) and he earned a spot in the all-star game. Hanas played top line left wing for All-Star Team Blue and he added one more primary assist in the 6-3 win. This camp helped finalize the 22-man roster for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE... Following the 2018-19 season, goaltender Joel Hofer joined the San Antonio Rampage (AHL affiliate of the Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues) for the rest of their regular season. The signed NHL prospect made his professional hockey debut on April 12, 2019 against the Texas Stars in Austin, Texas. He stopped 31 of 35 shots in the game. Joel Hofer was the second Canadian goaltender taken off the board in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He has championship experience as well winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2017-18 with the Swift Current Broncos. NHL PEDIGREE... Western Hockey League rookie James Stefan joins the Winterhawks after leading all protected list prospects with 49 goals and 95 points in 71 midget games with the prestigious Little Caesars program. James is the son of Patrik Stefan, the former first overall pick in 1999 to the Atlanta Thrashers. ALUMNI SUCCESS... Adam Henry (Winterhawks 2014-15) was named a Canada West First Team All-Star after completing his final season with the University of Manitoba. The Bisons captain tallied 92 points in 138 Canada West games and is now off to compete for the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL. He got a degree in management. Alumnus Seth Jones represented the Columbus Blue Jackets as a Metropolitan All-Star. He has six goals and 24 assists in 56 games this year and earlier this fall became the 36rd Winterhawk to play in his 500th NHL game. Winterhawks alumni Joachim Blichfeld (Pacific) and Derrick Pouliot (Central) played in the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic. Former assistant coach Karl Taylor (2013-14) was the bench boss for the Central Division. GLASS HALF FULL... Former captain and recent WHL graduate Cody Glass laced up in his first NHL game with the Vegas Golden Knights and he centered Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone. Cody Glass scored his first career NHL goal 22:12 into the game on his first NHL shot, becoming the youngest player in Golden Knights history to score a goal and the first even draft pick to play in a game. He has 12 points in 39 games this season in Vegas, recently returning from injury. BLICHFELD IN THE BIGS... Former 50-goal scorer and reigning WHL Player of the Year laced up for his first NHL game on December 12 when the San Jose Sharks hosted the New York Rangers, playing on the wing of Patrick Marleau, a veteran of 1700+ NHL games. He became the 126th Winterhawk to play in the NHL and the second alumni to make his debut this season (Cody Glass). NHL HAWKS... Thirteen former Portland Winterhawks were on opening day NHL rosters, which is good for second most in the Western Hockey League behind Kelowna. Below is a list of current Winterhawks playing in the NHL... Nino Niederreiter (Carolina Hurricanes) Henri Jokiharju (Buffalo Sabres) Seth Jones (Columbus Blue Jackets) Oliver Bjorkstrand (Columbus Blue Jackets) Brandon Dubinsky (Columbus Blue Jackets) Caleb Jones (Edmonton Oilers) Colton Sceviour (Florida Panthers)
Matt Dumba (Minnesota Wild) Ryan Johansen (Nashville Predators) Kieffer Bellows (New York Islanders) Braydon Coburn (Tampa Bay Lightning)* Cody Glass (Vegas Golden Knights) Brendan Leipsic (Washington Capitals) Luca Sbisa (Winnipeg Jets)
