PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE EMERALD CITY Public Interest Law Foundation’s 26th Annual Auction

WITH KEYNOTE SPEAKER

M A R C H 9, 2 0 1 9

WE LCO M E Dear Supporters and Friends, Welcome to the Public Interest Law Foundation’s 26th Annual Auction, “Public Interest in the Emerald City!” We so appreciate that you’ve joined us this evening to support such a worthy cause. Our PILF Auction is a signature Seattle University School of Law event, and tonight is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of outstanding work by a committee of dedicated alumni, the Access to Justice Institute, the Advancement Office, and most importantly, the students on the PILF Board. The direct beneficiaries of tonight’s efforts are the students who will participate in the PILF Summer Grant Program. Your attendance and support this evening signals that the work of our PILF grantees is important to the legal community. PILF grants provide our students with opportunities to experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from helping others through their summer work, and the students in turn reap the benefits of learning critical lawyering skills and being guided and mentored by spirited lawyers, a great number of whom are Seattle U Law alumni. Many of the students in this program will go on to pursue public interest careers and become leaders in their fields and in our communities. As we are all aware, the justice gap in our communities is immense and growing, and so many individuals with legal needs do not have access to legal services. The students who receive PILF grants will work tirelessly this summer to promote justice and equity and to expand capacity to legal aid, while experiencing firsthand the privilege of being a lawyer and the responsibility of serving others. You will hear more this evening about the future leaders you are supporting and the worthy community organizations they will work with through this program. Seattle U Law’s commitment to helping bridge the justice gap and our mission to educate powerful advocates for justice is realized through the PILF Summer Grant Program. Thank you so much for being here, for supporting PILF and our wonderful Seattle U Law students, for caring about the under‑served in our communities, and for joining our celebration of 26 years of this worthy organization! In gratitude, Annette E. Clark ’89 Rochelle Nelson ’14 Dean and Professor of Law Chair, Alumni Steering Committee

R AVE N LI D M AN ’ 7 7 NOVEMBER 18, 1945 – NOVEMBER 12, 2018

Tonight we remember Professor Emerita Raven Lidman, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 12, 2018. Professor Lidman received her J.D. degree in 1977 from University of Puget Sound (now Seattle U Law). She joined the law school in 1987, teaching the Youth Advocacy Clinic and the International Human Rights Clinic. Over the course of her long and varied legal career, she worked in clinics in South America, helped organize farm workers with Cesar Chavez, and represented the first lesbian couple in our state to win a second-parent adoption case. Her work in the Youth Advocacy Clinic focused on juvenile criminal defense, with an emphasis on youth prostitution and right to counsel in truancy cases. As a pioneer in the clinical legal education field, Professor Lidman’s legacy lives on in Seattle U Law’s Ronald A. Peterson Law Clinic. Thank you to Professor Lidman’s family and friends for their generous donations to PILF made in her memory.

A SAMPLING OF PILF GRANTEES

E I LI S H M A LO N E ’ 19 American Gateways Eilish Malone studied Global Studies and Hispanic Studies at University of Washington in Tacoma and graduated in 2016. Passionate about the issues confronting immigrant and working class communities in the US, Eilish went straight to law school at Seattle University School of Law. This past summer, Eilish interned at American Gateways, a non-profit organization in Austin, Texas. At American Gateways, Eilish worked on gender-based violence and asylum cases. Eilish’s interest in gender-based violence work stemmed from being a survivor of domestic abuse and violence. Her dream is to become a powerful advocate and ally for women, immigrants, and working class people. Her favorite quote, by Audre Lorde, is as follows: “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different than my own.”

H A LEY S I N C L AI R E ’ 2 0 Center for Children and Youth Justice Haley came to Seattle University School of Law, specifically for its focus on social justice and plans to work in international human rights law. This past summer, Haley Sinclaire worked with the Lawyers Fostering Independence program at Center for Children and Youth Justice (CCYJ) which was created to help foster and homeless youth. Lawyers Fostering Independence provides assistance with record sealing, “know your rights” seminars, obtaining stable housing, and much more. At CCYJ, Haley assisted with client intake, performed legal research for cases, and helped to advertise and expand the program. She is so thankful to PILF for the opportunity to gain experience in public interest law that has tremendously increased her desire to do this much-needed work.

15 F U N D -A- N E E D The Public Interest Law Foundation Summer Grant Program annually provides stipends to law students who intern without pay at nonprofit or public agencies. This year, a full grant is $5000. Most of our students work full-time during their two summers of law school, and these jobs are critical opportunities for them to be able to work directly with clients and get real-world experience. However, nonprofit legal organizations, public defenders, and government agencies are typically not able to fund the students who work with them, so students either must secure their own funding or become even more overburdened with debt in order to get this experience. Therefore, Summer Grants provide needed funding to allow students to make ends meet while they serve underserved individuals and communities. Since our program started over 26 years ago, hundreds of students have received stipends through this program, allowing them to address critical and unmet legal needs in the Puget Sound area, throughout the country and abroad. Students work under the supervision of experienced attorneys and engage in work ranging from securing protection orders for survivors of domestic violence, representing families at risk of homelessness in eviction proceedings, winning benefits for disabled veterans, or helping low-income workers avoid consumer fraud and identity theft. These internships are truly transformative experiences for the students. Students who work for an employer, thanks to a PILF summer grant, form relationships that can lead to permanent jobs after graduation. Our goal this evening, in honor of our 26th Anniversary, is to raise enough funds to support 25 full-time PILF Grantees for 2019. L EVEL S
