Letter From The Editor I had always wanted to write. Even in high school I gallivanted about writing short stories and mediocre poetry. Journalism was something that I had always been exposed to. My dad was a New York Post reporter after all. But, despite the exposure and access to the years of experience he had, I never planned on becoming a Journalist. In the 2010-2011 school year I attended a school in Illinois. After a year I called it quits and was left without a plan. LIU accepted me for the fall of 2012 despite my terrible grades. They gave me that chance—I was shocked, scared, and grateful all at the same time. I knew then that majoring in journalism was my destiny. I believe I became involved with Seawanhaka in mid to late September. I remember the day clearly and still appreciate the previous managing editor’s subtle yet forceful coaxing. In a mutual class she had urged me to attend the Tuesday meetings. My father also went to LIU and wrote for Seawanhaka back in the 80’s. I knew he would love to see my name in those pages. The love of journalism compelled me to continue being a staff writer. When the opportunity for being an editor came about I jumped on it. Honestly, I never thought I would get it. I only applied because I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t at least try. To my surprise, here I am, Noelani Montero, introducing myself as Seawanhaka’s news editor. It truly is mind-boggling.

I want to make a difference and I want to propel change within the LIU community. As a journalist, that is my goal. I want the voices of LIU to be heard over the clamorous antics of the administration. Don’t get me wrong, LIU is alright, but, there is always room for positive change.

LIU Brooklyn has become my home over the past year. Giving back to the students that made it that way is my main goal.

A FIELD GROWS IN BROOKLYN

LIU Brooklyn presents: Family Day, where all students can invite their family to enjoy a day of free food, athletic events and a series of workshops. Family day will be on Saturday, October 12 in the Schwartz Gymnasium. For more information please stop by the SLLD office M311.

SLLD is looking for students to volunteer in Prospect Park. Students are welcomed to come dressed in their best Halloween costume on Saturday, October 26 between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm. For more information, email Winifred.shih@liu.edu. BY Karen Miller

LIU Brooklyn plans to expand its athletic field. School officials announced the expansion project, which will include renovating neighboring areas and upgrading field facilities in July. Though Community Board 2 (CB2) recently recommended approval of the expansion project, some members of the community are already wary of impending construction. LIU Field is currently large enough to accommodate five campus teams, but too small to accommodate several spectators and NCAA championship games according to LIU officials. “This field expansion plan was an idea we had in mind years ago before the [Steinberg Wellness Center] was completed in 2006,” said LIU Brooklyn Director of Athletics John Suarez. “The field was extended a little in the past, but it’s still not a regulation size field.” Suarez explained that project intends to have a twofold effect: Ashland Place and Willoughby Street will be renovated and a small park will be added to the area, and modernizing the facilities will provide “a better fan experience.” Members of the neighboring Fort Greene community have experienced LIU’s renovations in the past and are against the project. “Some of us don’t support detrimental changes to neighboring areas,” said Michael Allen of the local 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU). LIU needs to be a better partner of the community.” Catherine Del Buono of Fort Greene said, “This expansion is not really for [the community]. LIU hasn’t been the best neighbor and they have a bad record when it comes to living up to their promises. Much of the areas surrounding the field and athletic center are in bad shape despite LIU saying they would maintain those areas. I’m also concerned about noise and traffic congestion.” Despite some criticism from the locals, approval of the expansion project was recommended by CB2 on Sept. 11.

Blueprint of LIU Photo Credit: Cooper, Robertson & Partners

The project will include the additions of new seats, concession stands, and modernized light and sound systems to the existing facilities. These additions are specifically aimed to benefit the fans as well as the teams. “We’re planning to get a sound and lighting system that will focus on the field more, and not the surrounding community. I think these changes would improve the two areas people have the most complaints about,” Suarez said. The entire expansion of the field could cost up to $7.5 million and $500,000 could potentially be allocated $500,000 from the city capital budget to aid the project. The additional funds will need to be raised by the Campus itself. There are a variety of avenues to pay for [the project],” Suarez said. “It will take some time since we don’t want to use University money to fund the project solely. We’ve been speaking to donors, alumni, anyone that can help us with this goal.” Some residents are unhappy because of how construction will affect the neighborhood. “Several people feel the removal of parking spaces on Ashland is a big problem,” Del Buono said. “Not only is DeKalb parking not an equal exchange, but Ashland is also a major thoroughfare for emergency vehicles. More construction can delay

ambulances, which is especially bad considering two hospitals in the area are closing.” Del Buono, who can see the field from her University Towers residence, says she is among several locals that think further construction to the area can only hurt the community. While campus officials have not denied the fact that construction will cause disruptions, Suarez insists the expansion project will be “nowhere near the magnitude of the [Steinberg Wellness Center] construction. Looking at all the recent changes in the community, buildings and areas are becoming more modernized, but the field is still in the year 1973. As far as construction goes, [LIU] let the neighborhood aware of construction schedules and we intend to do that again. Will there be some disruptions? Probably, yes, but it should be a pretty good, fairly easy project to complete. I think it’s going to help people who live in the [University] Towers and help the Campus—this project is about more that just the size of the field.”

President Anthony Allen and Vice President Maxim Celestin shared some information about the new semester and expressed their visions for LIU.

student involvement.

Allen, a former high school varsity football and track team captain said that leadership has been implemented in his life in many forms. Politics was the next step in his development as a leader.

According to President Allen, “Dr. Cline, is trying to increase the value of our degrees.” Vice President Celestin expanded saying, “She wants our university to be up there with the Columbias and NYUs. It starts with us. If we could bring LIU up to those standards that would be great.” SGA fully supports Dr. Cline’s stance.

“Being an advocate and a positive leader in your community is very important to me. Even as a freshman, I was a peer leader, orientation leader, sophomore council member and had other mentoring positions around the community. This has been my goal as a college student and as a young man,” said Allen. Despite being a member of his high school debate and was eager to be a part of real change for the LIU. Settling into his position was a rough transition especially being that he was recently admitted into the Respiratory Care program. “Managing my time was very crucial. Now I’m comfortable. No matter if you’re an executive within a student organization—school comes first,” he said. Allen’s experience as a SGA council member helped him understand the position and administration and believes his transition into the title was smooth. Both gentlemen, having experienced commuting as well as on-campus living, understand the divided student body. Bringing unity onto campus is a main objective.

Also on the to-do list is to create forums between LIU President Dr. Cline, university food provider Aramark, and the students. The administration has already decreased parking tickets for students, a proud accomplishment for the individuals involved.

Both the representatives clarified that they do not want SGA to be known as the “party organization.” If an organization needs assistance then it shall be given as well as empowerment and encouragement for all through collaborative teamwork. In the past, LIU has not had a traditional home coming week. Due to collaborations with the clubs and athletics this Fall, SGA promises to bring an event that has never been done before at LIU Brooklyn. Anthony Allen and Maxim Celestin allowed each other to speak and acknowledged the work of their fellow SGA members—Secretary Shaharrah Richards and Treasurer Aneesa Osbourne.

OBAMACARE: THE HIDDEN TRUTH

tephanie Royster comes from a working class family, she is a full time college student and she is currently insured under her mother’s Emblem Health care plan. In order for dependents to remain on their parents’ Emblem Health plan, they must be enrolled in school full time. In turn, the children of the insured will receive coverage until the age of 26. Royster, like many Americans, have heard about ObamaCare, but do not have a full understanding of what it is or how it works.

ObamaCare, also known as the Health Care reform, is a national health care plan aimed at restructuring the American health care system. Currently the health care system in the United States is poorly structured in comparison to Canada and some other countries. The Commonwealth Fund ranked the United States number 46th among 48 countries when it comes to providing health coverage for their citizens.

Each year that an individual is not insured, they will be asked to pay a yearly penalty and each member of the household will be charged a penalty up to $800.

Obama’s proposal, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (PPACA) was passed by the Senate in Dec. of 2009 and was officially signed into law by the president in March of 2010. The new reform was designed to increase affordable health insurances and lower uninsured rates. Insurance companies were also required to cover all individuals—even if they have a preexisting condition. According to a documentary by research scholar Christopher Conover, titled: “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare,” many Americans are not aware that ObamaCare will cost them more in premium rates. The film

breaks down the hidden truth—mainly that ObamaCare will cost many families to pay higher rates than before the law went into effect. “College students should be concerned because we are faced with more obstacles than past generations,” Royster said. “How are we supposed to afford health insurance, pay student loans and maintain living expenses?” Conover estimates that ObamaCare will cost an average family of four the premium rates of $650 to $1,000 each year. College students are not exempt from the expensive rates either. They too will have to pay expensive rates even if they work at low-wage job. Starting in 2014, when Americans file

The new plan also limits American citizens’ access to doctors and hospitals. According to The New York Times, Americans who purchase the affordable care plan might not be able see their doctor of choice. Another hidden fact of ObamaCare is who qualifies to be exempt from penalties. Members of Congress, politicians, government officials and their families are automatically exempt from the new health care reform.

His work as a student leader at the University of Texas inspired him to speak to young students. After working with Dell Computers for two years, he discovered that his passion was with working with students, and has been lecturing students for 13 years now. Despite the long list of universities, Sprinkles has lectured at, he feels the schools that stand out the most are the ones he returns to. The orator said, “I get to see the students grow. It’s about the

students, not the facility, and that’s what warms my heart.” Although the long hours and frequent traveling can become tedious, the renowned speaker says he stays inspired because he knows there’s always that one student that needs to hear his message. “I remember being that one student,” reminisced Sprinkles. “I made a deal that if I ever got a platform I would make people feel the way that person made me feel.”w Jonathan Sprinkles has also been featured in Forbes Magazine, Glamour Magazine, and is considered among Houston Business Journals 40 under 40.

They also strive to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups. Creating social and physical environments that promote good health for all is also one of their goals.

Since the year 1979, the United States began urging the public to obtain widespread health education on various up and coming disorders/diseases. Beginning in an era plagued by war, the United States began turning its attention to promoting healthy living styles and possibly eradicating certain disorders and diseases. This 30-year long project has blossomed and has educated millions of Americans nationwide. Since starting this initiative, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has projected decade long goals

o you remember when the only game available for mobile phones was snake? A creature that grew lengthier as the player gobbled up a black square, on a small screen. In addition to fabulous game graphics, the iOS 7 software update boasts a multitude of new yet familiar functions. Apple’s newest operating system was available for downloading mid-Sept. and is compatible with iPhones, iPads, and the iPod Touch.

The new and improved Safari offers fullscreen browsing along with a fresh view of the browser’s bookmarks. Siri now allows users to change settings through voice command and is now integrated with Twitter and Wikipedia. Users can also choose Siri’s gender. The multitasking feature allows users to jump between apps more efficiently. Apps are displayed in a more organized and visibly accessible manner.

iOS 7 offers many new features for the control center, notification center, camera, Safari, and Siri. The remodeled control center allows music controls, airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ‘do not disturb’, lock mode, alarm clock, timer, and camera settings to coexist in one palette.

Camera features include Instagramesque photo filters. Also, photos can now be organized into ‘moments’ or ‘collections’ using the time and location. The new photo sharing feature enables users the to upload content into shared albums that can be accessed by family and friends.

“…Our purpose was to create an experience that was simpler, more useful, and more enjoyable — while building on the things people love about iOS. Ultimately, redesigning the way it works led us to redesign the way it looks,” according to apple.com’s design page.

Messaging fonts and notifications have also been transformed. Timestamps now exist for every single received and sent message—the past iOS only allowed timestamps at the beginning of conversations.

FLU SEASON AWARENESS

E

ach year 5 to 20% of Americans die from flu related deaths. According to flu.gov, the seasonal flu is a respiratory contagious illness that is caused by the flu virus. Flu season typically occurs in January, March and December.

Seawanhaka Press | www.SeawanhakaPress.com OCTOBER 11, 2013

People who are at risk for the flu are generally those with preexisting chronic health conditions, children, and senior citizens ages 65 and older. The flu virus is very contagious and can be spread as easily as touching the infected person or a surface with the virus on it.

Dr. Ralphine Edmond of LIU Brooklyn’s University Health and Medical Services (UHMS) recommends that any person six months or older receive the flu shot.

e all reflect on our lives when we have alone time or can’t sleep. One of the most troublesome thoughts that human beings have ever encountered is: what will we leave for future generations to remember us by? Today, let’s attempt to figure out the answer to this question and finally put our minds at ease. Ideally, you naturally think your resume will help you be remembered, right? Wrong. Prior to answering this riddle, I want you to take a few minutes to do the following: separate what you do for yourself from what you do for other people.

Things for yourself where you went to school diplomas/degrees ideal job. Ironically, these attributes are some of the first things forgotten. Your resume fades with you. Your job title? Gone. Shocking, isn’t it? When you die, that’s the last time your resume is ever mentioned.

There are four different categories of legacies that we all have The first would be your personal legacy - the impact you have on the people in your personal life (such as your friends) The second category we all share is our family legacy—the impact we have on our families. The third category that we share with each other is our community legacy. Are you active in your community? Do you help repair houses, or raise money for charity? t’s Monday morning right before first period. It’s almost time for class and I’m trying my best to connect to LIU’s Wi-Fi network (LIU-Net) in the first floor of the LLC Building. I want to see my grades on blackboard for last week’s homework but I can’t hold the connection for even a minute. I use LIU-Net for a variety of reasons: to keep track of homework, email, connecting with other students and keeping up with online fiction writers. The LIU community, more or less, uses the school’s Wi-Fi for the same reasons. That’s why it is essential to have Internet at our disposal whenever and wherever on campus. All around me students are having the same problem on devices varying from cell phones to iPads to laptops. The same issue resurfaces when I try to connect in the Pratt building and the Health

People ask you what do you want to be when you grow up, but the important question is: how would you like to be remembered. The answer is simple. Science building. Both buildings hardly allow me a steady, speedy connection. Despite the occasional disconnections I have with LIU-Net, some students have it worse. “The network is terrible,” says Cameron Leblanc, a sophomore who uses an Android phone and laptop. “I only get good connections in the Health Science Building, but never in Metcalfe.” “I can’t connect to the Internet in the Health Science building or the fifth floor library, but sometimes I get a connection in the third floor LLC,” said another sophomore student, Abigail Sison. Both Leblanc and Sison use personal laptops and Android phones when connecting to the Internet. “I think the Wi-Fi’s inconsistent,” says senior Quintasia Welch, “Sometimes it’s strong, but other times I have

trouble connecting to the Internet. It’s frustrating.” Keep in mind that it’s not like we as students have many other means of accessing the Internet. Other than computer labs scattered around campus, computers and internet are difficult to come by—especially since the labs get hefty crowds of students throughout the day. The real problem is that sometimes we cannot connect to the Internet at the most inconvenient of times. This makes it harder for us to connect to each other and our responsibilities. It is uncertain whether these faulty connections are due to the miscellaneous types of devices the LIU community uses on a daily basis.

Johns originally set out to grace the silver screen, while studying acting at NYU. Fate however, spun a different plan. A revelation came forth when the “Golden Boy” realized he spent an excessive amount of time painting the hair of his colleagues. This prompted his move to beauty school.

clients—he sees them as regular people and he sees everyone as blank canvases waiting to be given colored life. Johns especially supports teachers. “Teachers are the most important people because they teach our youth,” he said.

Other favorable memories include doing Natasha Richardson’s hair during her run in Cabaret on Broadway and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy for her wedding. Still, the color master remains humble. “My greatest accomplishment is being a nice person. That is the biggest accomplishment anyone could have no matter what,” he said. Johns speaks of his craft in a voice far deeper than the usual colorist— profound in an almost spiritual manner where hair is much more than dead cells. Passion emits from his every word, and reveals a genuine tone.

To those looking for stability in his field, the colorist who is also a gold and silversmith said, “Show up for work, no matter what. Study people that are artistic and if it’s your dream, keep doing it.”

The artist’s vision is also not clouded by lust for celebrity

sPRING 2014 FASHION PREVIEW

S

eptember is almost over and the cold season, unfortunately, is far soon to come, but New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (NYFW) has already highlighted the top trends for the spring 2014. Why do designers show their collections for the next season so in advance? It literally takes six months for clothes to come down the runway and make their way into the stores. So what is going to be highly stylish for the fashionistas to keep in mind? It’s already the right time to start working out in order to have a flat belly by time the first warm days arrive because crop tops are going to be one of the leading fashion trends for the spring 2014. Almost every designer featured a bare belly on the runway. Among those are glamorous collections by Michael Kors, combining feminine silhouettes and dreamy prints or Proenza Schouler’s collection, whose models showed off

their midriffs in metallic crop tops. Besides tops, crop trend applied nicely to pants and trousers, offering much variety in shapes, like slimmer fit designs or new wide-leg styles. On the runway Alexander Wang’s models wore slouchy trousers from nineties. But that is not surprising because they say that fashion is cyclical and old trends come back in fashion after some years. Sporty chic definitely inspired designers for the spring 2014 fashion. Zippers, hoodies and windbreakers have never looked so cool and at the same time elegant as on the runways of the recent NYFW. Vera Wang featured chiffon and black mesh in her collection, while Southern California beaches inspired Tommy Hilfiger for his new designs. Lacoste brought tennis roots to his spring relaxed silhouettes of oversized jackets and easy separates.

The ex-Color Director of Oribe is working on an autobiography— uncertain whether or not he will push for it to be published. In the future, Johns hopes to live peacefully in a beautiful warm climate among friends. For now his mission is to enhance the beauty of hair and heighten the confidence in his clients. prints, which certainly got a unique, take on that trend. So NYFW has already given us a great variety of options to create trendy, street style spring looks.

With or without black, white continues to dominate the color palette in the fashion 2014 year. And now it gets a real tridimensional look by combination with flashes of tan and beige. for the community to recognize him for it,” states Sanviki Chapman, LIU alumni attending the show. As it drew nearer to show time, the Kumble audience grew into a full house well before 7:30 p.m. As the theater filled with guests, the much-excited audience waited anxiously for commencement. Soon, the stage lights began to trickle off as the blue spot light introduced the three starring actors to the audience: Craig muMs Grant, Traci Michelle, and Carvens Lissant.

ong Island University’s very own Kumble Theater welcomed an evening of spoken word, dance, and music brought by none other than the production of Sekou Sundiata Revisited on September 27th. The Kumble stage embraced this parade of artistic and talented entertainment in honor of the piece’s main inspiration, the late Sekou Sundiata.

Moreover, the nights’ rendition of one of his most praised works, The Circle is a Hard Bop, arrived at high anticipation by his many fans, new and old. Though, very few audience members were unfamiliar with Sundiata’s work. The majority of the members were returning faithful fans, attending the production because of their shared admiration for the late artist. “I am very familiar with his work… I can only hope

Whether it was a monologue or a colloquy, each individual brought a distinctive essence to their character, presenting the audience with an almost realistic performance. In addition to the actors, the dancers also contributed greatly to the production. Through their precise yet seemingly endless flow of movement, the dancers provided the audience with more visual depth into the piece, creating a story with no words necessary. Unfortunately, the audience’s captivation was eventually forced to come to an abrupt end as the entertainers bid goodbye to the audience. “He’s a generational manifestation of life… since he’s an ancestor it’s great to be in contact with him,” reflects Adia Whitaker, choreographer of the production. “Coming from that era, I could relate to all of it,” stated audience member Brenda Stokey. Such testimonies, among others in the audience, are merely just a few of the array of others touched by Sundiata’s work. There is no doubt, having lived a life passionately prolific in his unique expressions of art; Sundiata’s voice continues to be heard.

A true renaissance man, Sundiata is honored nationwide, if not internationally, for his award-winning work in poetry, acting, music and much more. He has received highly acclaimed awards, among which are the ever so popular AUDELCO Awards and the much-admired BESSIE award, as a result of his prolific efforts in pursuing his passion. Responsible for a multiplicity of notable work in the world today, it is evident that Sundiata’s intense work ethic is not going unnoticed.

Scene after scene, this unbeatable trio of entertainers practically entranced the audience, almost seemingly effortlessly, as they transformed into three African American artists, each facing the typical conundrums of the 60s and 70s.

written songs on the album. “I don’t wanna, hold hands with a stranger/ I don’t wanna walk when I just learned how to run,” Jessie J sings. She sounds emotional and believable, almost perfect. “I Miss Her”- Is an honest, personal, raw and self-reflecting ballad. “Harder We Fall”- This is a different sound for Jessie J and it works very well. It’s a very indie inspired song that can easily be sung by Ed Sheeran, Fun, or Jason Mraz. But Jessie J’s voice stands out in a song like this. It’s a great record about getting back up after you fall. “Breathe”- Jessie J calms down her versatile vocal pipes in this moving tribute to love.

fter bursting on scene with her 2011 debut album, “Who You Are,” which spawned hits like, “Price Tag (Feat. B.o.B)” and “Domino,” Jessie J is back with her sophomore album, “Alive.” Trying a different approach than her last album, Jessie J has recruited new producers, new features and even a new haircut. “Alive” is full of personal ballads, confident boosters, urban approached tracks, and head-nodding up-tempo songs as well as a few recycled songs that are a few desperate attempts for a hit. Let’s take closer look at the album. “It’s My Party” Is an example of one of the many desperate attempts for a hit. It sounds like a stripped down version of “Domino.” It’s not a bad song but when you’ve already done something this similar, it doesn’t make it good either. “Thunder”- Jessie J showcases her unparalleled vocals over nice thumping tribal drums and a sweet piano melody as she sings about a very deep kind of love. “Square One”- This is one of the best

“Daydreamin’”- This song seems very 70’s-80’s inspired and sounds like a song familiar to Prince or The Jackson 5’s discography. It’s very dancy and risky, but it’s a risk worth taken. “Excuse My Rude” (Feat. Becky G) Is the most urban song on the album and features Becky G, a rapper from England, Jessie J could have done this alone. “Wild (Feat. Big Sean & Dizzee Rascal)”This should have been the opening track. It’s up-tempo, different, has interesting guests, catchy and contains a mesmerizing chorus. “Gold”- Nice feel good pop song with stellar vocals and a feet-tapping beat. “Conquer The World (Duet with Brandy)” – Usually a duet with two of the best singers out right now can go either really good or really bad but, this was just okay. They both could have done better. “Alive”- The title tracks serves as the album’s finale and was not a good choice. This song will not make a good lasting impression of the album. It’s boring and forgettable. Jessie J is in the right direction to stay around for a while. She is a rare talent and although the whole album isn’t perfect, she did come close.

T

realize it. This song is the perfect example of going against the norm and still making a good record. “Team”- Lorde doesn’t depend much on making catchy songs but this is definitely catchy and is destined for radio play. It’s one of the albums finest displays of the new artist’s undeniable talent as a writer.

“Tennis Court”- She opens up “Pure Heroine,” with a down-tempo track that uses a synthesized beat similar to Drake. She takes that and uniquely adds a careful amount of snare drums, bells and shakers. Right off the back, Lorde sounds like she knows the type of artist she wants to be.

“Glory and Gore”- “And the cry goes out…” she sings, before, well, crying out. The synths are strong, coming in pulses as she weaves a story about gladiators. But it’s really about relationships, dying, and all the things that make life crazy. “Glory and gore go hand in hand,” she wails. “Still Sane”- “ I’m little, but I’m coming for the crown,” Lorde sings. The song is about how she went through struggles and has become one with them instead of blaming them and letting them hold her down.

here is a future star on the rise and her name is Lorde. She has had success with her debut single, “Royals’ which has topped multiple charts and now she has just released her debut album, “Pure Heroine.” Let’s see how the New Zealand teen fared with her Debut album.

“400 Lux”- She showcases the darker side of pop in a brighter light. Interesting beat and even more interesting lyrics. “We’re never done with killing time/ Can I kill it with you? /Till our veins run red and. blue/We come around here all the time/Got a lot to not do, let me kill it with you,” Lorde sings. “Royals”- you might be familiar with the chorus “And we’ll never be Royals”. If you take a closer listen, the song is much more than that. From the great songwriting, “and I’m not proud of my address, / in a torn-up town, no post code envy,” to the very calculated beat, the song is not just all hype. “Ribs”- it’s obvious throughout the whole album that she isn’t focusing on duplicating what’s on the radio but, instead, she is starting from scratch and making people reconsider what gets played on radio even if she doesn’t

“White Teeth Teens”- Lorde sings about how appearances are not always authentic and she sings it over a DooWop-inspired beat. This is one of the albums more up-tempo tracks. “A World Alone”- It’s the closing track to a very impressive debut. Not the perfect anthem to close with but, not the worst either. She did a great job at creating a direction and theme for the album and not steering away from it as the album goes on. Her songs sound similar but that is sometimes necessary for a debut album. This might not be the last time we here from this metaphorically embracive artist. Album Grade: B+

Music Review: Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz

I

t’s been a very memorable year for Miley Cyrus. She kicked 2013 off with shaving most of her hair, outshining the likes of Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake with her controversial VMA performance. In addition she scored her first #1 single in the country with “Wrecking Ball” thanks to its record-breaking video. Now, the world’s most controversial Pop Star has just released her first album of the “New Miley” era called BANGERZ. With BANGERZ, Cyrus delivers a few unexpected elements and some not so unexpected elements in the album. One unanticipated element of the album was her inclusion of her country roots that could be heard in songs like “4x4” feat. Nelly.

Seawanhaka Press | www.SeawanhakaPress.com OCTOBER 11, 2013

Another thing is the whole album does not fully reflect her controversial loud persona. She actually has a few personal songs like the opening of “Adore You,” the hit single “Wrecking Ball,” and the Future assisted, “My Darlin’” where she slows down the production and serenades the beat with her sultry vocals.

18

Of Course, she still tries to live up to album’s title with songs like “Love Money Party Feat. Big Sean” and “We Can’t Stop.” The album is full of special guests like Britney Spears, Nelly, Big Sean, Future and Pharrell. BANGERZ, for sure, has a couple of standout tracks; the first song is the signature Pharrell Williams produced, “#GetItRight.” The “Party in The USA” hitmaker seems to be taking a page out of Mariah Carey’s playbook by using the hash tag before a song and it works for her because the song is just begging for radio play. The beat is similar to Pharrell and JayZ’s “Change Clothes” but, what makes this song so good is that special thing only Miley can add to it. Another album standout is “Do My Thang” and according to Miley “If you don’t get it, you weren’t meant to.” This is a clear anthem for freedom of doing what you want to, which Miley seemed to have been doing all year long. “We Can’t Stop,” the album’s lead single, still serves as one of the record’s strongest material. It’s the perfect blend of Hip-

by kabraun DIXON

Hop and Pop. BANGERZ is also the home a couple bizarre tracks. First, the strange “FU” is a confusing blend of James Brown mixed with something from the The Phantom of the Opera and she tops it all off with a weird appearance by French Montana. Miley closes the album off strong with the Mike-Will-Made-It penned track “Someone Else” where she admits the hurt she feels of a failed relationship and proclaims she is a completely different person now. On the deluxe edition you will find “Hands In The Air”, featuring Ludacris, which would have fit better on the standard edition because it contains more of the “Banger” quality then a few of the other tracks. Musically, Miley haven’t steered too far away from her old self as could be heard on “Maybe You’re Right.” Miley Cyrus doesn’t fully live up to its album title but, overall, BANGERZ is still worth a listen. ith so many big albums being released this past month it’s easy to look past Pusha- T’s debut album My Name is My Name. However, a quick listen to the album might just be a pleasant one. After departing from the group The Clipse in 2010, Pusha-T had been hard at work on his solo career. He was signed

Quiet but striking is one way to put My Name is My Name. Pusha T delivers a very strategic flow filled with heavy lyrical content. “No reading, no writing, [the government] made a savage of me. They praying for jail, but I mastered the pen.” Pusha-T spits cleverly on “HoldOn”. The song also features Rick Ross and unaccredited background vocals from Kanye West. sold records, never sold dope. So I ain’t hearing none of that street sh-t,” Pusha rhymes over the beat of “Hold On.” He also tries to separate himself from the “dope-boy rapper” gimmick that a lot of people put on him saying, “Nowadays I sell hope, what you rather I sell dope?” he raps on “No Regrets” that features Young Jeezy. Pusha T also took shots at his rival Lil Wayne and Wayne’s mentee Drake, “Look, my Ouija board don’t never lie to me/The best rapper living, /I know who’s alive to me/Yeah, the competition’s all but died to me,” Pusha T raps on “Sweet Serenade.” The verse is in reference to Drake who is always calling Wayne the best rapper alive. The track also features Chris Brown, who has feuded with Drake. There is one verse that is a bit uneasy and it’s in reference to Evelyn and Chad

Johnson’s domestic abuse case. “Don’t let your side b----s settle in/Might have to head-butt you Evelyn.” It’s hard to tell if he is making fun of Chad Johnson or making fun of the entire situation. My Name is Name showcases a wide range of raw rap beats that has been missing in rap albums of today. Some of the best production came in the songs “Numbers on the Board,” “King Push,” “Pain Featuring Future” and the Pharrell Williams produced “S.N.I.T.C.H.” He continues to call out other rappers on the album. “I’m King Push, this king push/I rap n---a/ ‘bout trap n---s/ I don’t sing hooks.” T raps on “King Push.” Pusha T really put together a very good album that core rap fans would enjoy. He really proved the he is a real artist and isn’t showing any signs of selling out his authentic rap skills.

013 has been known to release various games that seem to grab the immediate attention of gamers worldwide. Grand Theft Auto was definitely one of the video games that had a big effect on the gaming community. Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 and has taken a heavy toll on most gamers. It has been released on the PS3 and the Xbox360. GTA5 is a R.P.G. (role playing game) game that is made by Rockstar games. The focus of this game is to complete missions, steal cars, and make money.

BY Beni choudhury

What is a world without money? Nothing. Even video games base their main idea upon money. The video game is based on Los Angeles, California hence, they created a GTA city called Los Santos. The game features three characters: Michael, Trevor and Franklin. Michael is a retired bank robber who is presently in the witness protection program. Trevor is a prior military pilot. Last but not least, Franklin works at a luxury car dealership. You can switch between them at any time off missions, and at certain points during missions. When

you switch your characters, they still tend to continue on with their virtual lives. When you switch characters, you may be astonished at what types of situations you find the characters in. This game has been in production for about 5 years. Clearly the producers of GTA put in a lot of dedication and focused on the precision of quality that was going to be achieved. The phenomenal amount of money has been made in a very short period of time. They predicted to make a billion dollars in a month; they ended up exceeding their goals with in the first day. 24 hours, and they already made $800 million.

Characters in this game can drive, own pets, practice yoga, hunt, jet ski, cycle, play tennis, golf, bowling, and be entertained at strip clubs.

The more times I am resurrected the more information I gain to defeat the opponent. Eventually I win and carry on with my quest in developing excellent armor, magic rings, magic stones, and weapons. I downloaded this game the moment I updated my iPad to IOS 7. In the original Infinity Blade game, a brave bloodline of knights fight a malicious ruler. As they die, their soul gets sealed within a blade along with their skills. As years go by, a knight comes to avenge his fathers and carry on the mission they died for.

In Infinity Blade II, the heroic knight decides to free the man who built the Infinity Blade. He did this because wanted understand the blade and its importance to his life. The forger was called the Worker of Secrets. Once he crossed all the milestones to free the Worker of Secrets, he gets tricked by him. The Worker of Secrets trap the knight inside the Vault of Tears. The knight learns that he was an evil ruler in his past life and the man he freed was imprisoned by him in his past life!

BY mourmani kaba

The game ends with a vigilant female, beginning her journey to free the knight. The women that freed him was his lover. As they die in history, they get reincarnated as humans only to find each other again. In Infinity Blade III, you are allowed to fight with both male and female knights. This was an astonishing development in the game series. As a player of the Infinity Blade I and II, I became bored of fighting with the same character. The game ends with me defeating the Worker of Secrets and saving the world. As I play my missions, I wait and hope for more game updates. I just bought the game and I finished the story line. Although I know how the story ends, my work is far from over. I still did not acquire the Infinity Blade. There is no way I can say I beat the game if I do not get the Infinity Blade weapon.

After countless deaths, one knight eventually defeats the God King. The destined knight takes his Infinity Blade and fulfills the missions his ancestors fought for. In the game, the knight opens a door that only the Infinity Blade can unlock. He later learns that one of his kinsmen surrendered to the harsh dictator to be his servant. They duel and the plot ends.

They preformed live to a very limited audience at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle. Grand Theft Auto 5 has been a huge success in the gamer’s community.

The graphics in this game are very up to par. The graphics are extravagant, very life-like and realistic. Even the way the game is set up, it’s very close to reality.

INFINITY BLADE VIDEO GAME REVIEW

lade III is one of the best Apple games ever created. The art work is astonishing. The battle interface system literally complements the iPad itself. I can swipe and tap the creen to interact with my environment. In the Infinity Blade games, I find myself to be a knight that gets reborn every time he dies.

Believe it or not, Los Santos came to New York City for the film festival (NYFF) on September 30th in the Lincoln Center. When Los Santos visited NYC, so did the artists of the GTA radio. exclusive Interview wITH head basketball Coach

A

t first glance, Blackbirds Coach Jack Perri shouldn’t have much to worry about. The sight of the three NEC championship trophies that illuminate his office displays the level of success that he and the men’s basketball squad has had in recent years. But in reality, Perri – wearing a black tracksuit and fresh out of practice – now has cause for concern about the season ahead. He’s still digesting the news that his star forward, Julian Boyd, could be out for the season – once again – after tearing the ACL in his knee over the summer. “We didn’t think he re-tore it,” Perri said in an exclusive interview with Seawanhaka. “When he met with our trainer, he said it looked pretty stable so it’s probably a meniscus thing. We thought it was something small, so when the news came down – we were like, ‘Oh my God.’”

Seawanhaka Press | www.SeawanhakaPress.com OCTOBER 11, 2013

When the Blackbirds won back-to-back NEC championships in 2011 and 2012, Perri was the assistant coach. But after being promoted to head coach last year, he now shoulders the victories and the burdens under the spotlight.

20

He only had to wait seven years to land the top job. And while most have grown impatient in that time, Perri sees that period in his life through a positive lens. “It was a great opportunity. The great thing about [former head coach] Jim [Ferry] was that he let me do so much,” he reflects. “It was kind of like our team. I got to have the experience of running practice and doing recruiting.” But Perri does admit that his patience was not without its limits. At one point, he began to explore his options beyond LIU. “I looked at some other opportunities, maybe division II head coaching jobs,” he adds. But his comfort level with Ferry convinced him to stay put. “I’ve known Jimmy since I was 16 years old so having that relationship with him built that comfort level. So I knew what I was getting from him.” Last year, Perri finally received his

By Justin Ellis

opportunity. But early on, things weren’t quite going his way after losing Boyd to the same ligament injury that he’s torn yet again. Perri and his team were hopeful it wasn’t a re-tear, but they weren’t so lucky. Boyd’s injury affected Perri even more due to what Boyd has been through in his career, “You try to stay as positive as you can same thing with Julian. For somebody who has been through so much with the heart problem and initial tear he has a unbelievable resolve to him.” Perri and Boyd are both hopeful the star forward will be back by January but as of now it’s hard to say. Being a first-year head coach, Perri had to deal with a lot – including a violent brawl on campus that reportedly involved several members of the Blackbirds last year – he’s found the experience valuable enough to apply its lessons towards the future. “I learned so much from the off-thecourt issues and the adversity we had to handle,” he said. “It was something I had never been a part of in all my years. It was all brand new so we had to find away to figure it all out.” Even with those problems – and the legal drama that followed as a result of the case – his team was able to fight through during the season. “To be able to come back and not fall apart and get these guys to believe in themselves, handle Boyd’s injury and still win that championship I certainly felt good about myself and our staff.” Looking forward to this upcoming season and the new players, Perri is keeping his eye out for rising prospects. “[Freshmen] Iverson Fleming, has probably been the most consistent,” the coach explains. “He has got a really great mindset, like a older kid. He has great substance and competes everyday with great leadership. “When asked to pick a game that he was most looking forward to, Perri seemed more interested in the locations “I’m

excited we are going out to California to play three games in a row.” he said. “Then we get to go down to Texas and let our Texas guys be home after Christmas. [That’ll] give those guys a chance to play in front of their friends and family.” Now entering his second season on the job, Perri also has an unprecedented chance to coach LIU to a fourth straight NEC title – along with a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Over the past three years LIU had lost to North Carolina 87-102, Michigan St. 67-89 then last year James Madison 5568. Perri feels as though this year could have a totally different feel, “Now we are kind of starting over after losing five seniors who had great experience,” he said. “The mentality is still the same. Hopefully, we keep getting good players and keep in mind that it can be done. And it has been – like other schools such as Florida Gulf Coast. So why can’t that be us?”

he was recently named Northeast Champion (NEC) Rookie of the Week. And now, Jenn Peters, 18, is fired-up over her first season as one of LIU’s newest lady Blackbirds.

play both sports at her number-one choice, LIU. She states, “I looked at other schools but I liked LIU because they were really interested in me. And other things attracted me too.”

A former Minisink Valley High School scoring marvel in both soccer and lacrosse in upstate New York, Peters is continuing her journey as a forward for LIU’s two-time defending Northeast Champions. And she plans to with find even more success with lacrosse in the spring.

In her transition from high school to college, Peters noticed a great difference, not only in terms of college sports, but in college life as a whole.

Originally a native of Slate Hill, New York, Peters began playing soccer in the third grade and lacrosse in the sixth grade. Yet most athletes begin playing both years earlier.

The teams at Minisink Valley High School are known as the Warriors. It would appear as though this name did Peters justice, considering her Section as IX Class AA Player of the Year in soccer and her crucial role in the team finding victory in their section of the draw during her sophomore year. Giving a whole new definition to the term “team player,” Peters took more than just one for the team while playing alongside her soccer teammates in their victory despite having her own ailments. “I remember when I was really sick and I had a 100 degree fever and I had no voice,” she recalls. “And I remember [that] I played really good. So I was happy.”

Moreover, after leaving behind what may be viewed as huge cleats to fill at Minisink, Peters then chose to

Embarking on a major in education, with numerous hours of soccer practice, while also taking fifteen credits, Peters’ current schedule is becoming increasingly hectic as the semester progresses. Although she doesn’t have “to concentrate on lacrosse right now because its soccer season.” Nonetheless, her personal goal is land a rookie spot on the lacrosse team. Peters has her supportive father to stand by her in this stressful time. Having her father as her “number-one fan” pushes Peters to go above and beyond the expectations placed upon her. “When I know he’s at a game,” she adds. “I play harder.” These days, it’s looking increasingly difficult to secure front-row seating for Peters’ father at every game considering the soccer team’s current winning streak. “We’re all trying to push,” Peters said. “We’ve won this conference two years in a row so [now] we’re shooting for the third year.”

“Yeah, I started late,” Peters states, “Everyone usually [plays in] like, kindergarten.” Despite the late-start, Peters immediately showed promise in soccer. “I have a lot of energy. It was fun and I loved it. So, I stuck with it,” she adds. Likewise, Peters was just as skilled in lacrosse, and landed a spot on her varsity team in the eighth grade.

On the field, she views the college competition as much more intense, stating that, “It’s way better.” Offthe-field, Peters often finds herself encountering a common problem student athletes face, achieving a balance between athletics and academics.

efore the New York Jets shared a stadium with the Giants, they played in Shea stadium along with the Mets. But the arrangement brought tough times for the Jets. Shea proved to be a disadvantage since the Jets had to play more road games whenever the Mets were using the building. In an attempt to bring back homefield advantage, they started playing two games during September in the Meadowlands. On October 6, 1983, the Jets announced that they would be leaving Shea to play in the Meadowlands. And in 1984, the Jets became co-tenants of the Meadowlands with the Giants. The late Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears, or as some called him “Sweetness,” is one of the greatest running backs of all-time. He would cement his legacy on Oct 7, 1984 as he broke Jim Brown’s career rushing record of 12,312 yards. Payton’s career with the Bears would end in 1987, finishing with 16,726 yards, nine Pro Bowl selections and one Super Bowl ring.

for career completions. Retiring in 1999 from the Miami Dolphins, Marino continued to hold the record at 4,967 completions. In 2006, Brett Favre would displace Marino’s record. The Washington Capitals became an official National Hockey League team October 9, 1974. The team’s first game was against the New York Rangers, which the Capitals lost 6-3 at Madison Square Garden. This would set an early tone for the rest of the season as the Capitals went on to a 37-game roadlosing streak. The Capitals would end the season with a record of 8-67-5 and a win percentage of .131, which – to this day – ranks the team as the worst in NHL history. Black Head Coaches are still lacking in the National Football league but on October 10, 1994 – the league would see its first ever. Art Shell of the Oakland Raiders coached his first game with a win over the New York Jets, 14-7, in a “Monday Night Football” game. This would be his first win of a 54-win career for Shell. In 1990, Shell won “Coach of The Year” honors. But four years later, he was fired after having

a 9-4 season. In 2006, Shell returned to the Raiders – but was again fired after a single season when the Raiders stumbled to its record in nearly 40 years with only two wins and 14 losses. Lawrence Taylor, former linebacker of the New York Giants had his jersey No. 56 retired, on October 10, 1994. Taylor spent his entire 12-year career with the G-Men. He compiled 1,088 tackles, 132 sacks, while also winning two Super Bowls. Deion Sanders, aka “Primetime,” played professionally in both football and baseball. Incredibly, on October 11, 1992, he attempted to play both sports on the same day. He began the day in Miami, playing with his Atlanta Falcons teammates. He then left for Pittsburgh, trying to play in a League Championship game with the Atlanta Braves. The trip to Pittsburgh would be for naught, as he didn’t get into the game. Still, Sanders is the only athlete in history to play in both a Super Bowl and World Series. “Primetime” was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. Dennis Rodman, infamous for his colorful hair and personality, enjoyed being the bad boy. On October 11, 1997

haquille O’Neal is now a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings. For Shaq, it could make for a good business decision. But is there any pride within the ownership of the Kings? Apparently not. While playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaq tormented the Kings

The Kings are a struggling team that almost relocated to Seattle, Which angered its fan base. And now they’re letting its longtime foe into the franchise? Shaq was perfect doing his job at TNT, where he offered sharp and humorous commentary. But how trustworthy will he be when he’s telling viewers about how great the Kings are and how they’re moving in the right direction? Let’s face it – few NBA fans care about Kings. Maybe there’s a small-depressed group in Sacramento, but there’s nothing

Rodman returned to the NBA after an 11-game suspension. At the time, it was the second longest suspension in NBA history. Rodman received the punishment for kicking a cameraman in the groin. He was also fined $25,000. But the suspension is nothing compared to what some players receive for infractions today. Incoming Knicks small forward, Metta World Peace, received an 86-game suspension for his part in a brawl that happened in 2006 as his Pacers took on the Detroit Pistons.

to compare to teams like the Knicks, Lakers and even the rising Brooklyn Nets. Many have tried to defend the ownership with the argument that Shaq will bring national attention to the Kings. But having a Hall of Fame caliber owner means doesn’t always raise the profile of a team. Just ask the Charlotte Bobcats, which is owned by Michael Jordan. Whenever they’re on TV, chances are that you’ll see a player of theirs getting dunked on or the team is losing by 30. Hopefully Shaq attends many Kings games and the fans give him the loud boos that he deserves. The Kings of the early 2000s certainly had championship aspirations with star players Mike Bibby and Chris Webber. But those days are clearly over.

You would never see Magic Johnson buy into the Celtics or Larry Bird become part-owner of the Lakers. Those teams have too much selfrespect for its history and legacy. The new owners of the Kings, obviously, are willing to take money no matter the source. The outlook for the Kings over the next few years isn’t good. Simply put, they’re in need for talent. Maybe Shaq can convince players to come play in Sacramento.

Who knows? Maybe the old guy will come out of retirement and lace his sneakers one more time. Seriously, Shaq being allowed to be a Kings owner is a bad sign of things to come. It’s all downhill from here, but at least having Shaq around will make losing fun.

From the uk to LIU: Jack Spearpoint

ailing all the way from Southern England, Jake Spearpoint, 18, is a freshman at LIU. The blonde young man is the newest addition to the golfing family and majors in management. And yet that pursuit is just a back-up in the event that his plans to become a professional golfer doesn’t take off. Golfing became a part of Spearpoint’s life around the age of four or five. He credits time spent with his grandparents – or as he calls them, “nan” and “grandad,” for sparking his interest in the sport. “I went out with them, just messing around—annoying them really. They just gave me a golf club and I was just hitting it about and I caught the bug I guess,” Spearpoint remembers. Inspiration also came to Spearpoint in the form of [famed Spanish golfer] Seve Ballesteros. “He is just a magician. Unfortunately, he passed away,” he said. “I never got to watch him play in person, but I’ve watched clips of him on YouTube. The stuff he can do is pretty special.”

pursuing his dreams in New York was getting over the fact that he couldn’t get his mom’s home cooking. “It’s a lot different than home,” he said with his distinct British accent. “At home it’s quite quiet while here, it’s the complete opposite. But I’m enjoying it.” Spearpoint, who describes life at LIU as “good fun” also enjoys taking in the area’s immediate surroundings. “It’s nice because it’s a small campus,” he said while adding that he particularly likes that there are many neighborhoods within walking distance. On his Twitter page, Spearpoint carries only one message: “Play the most mentally challenging game in the world, golf.” Now 3,000 miles away from home, Spearpoint is ready to discover whether the grass truly is greener on the other side.

His reasons for traveling abroad to continue his education are straightforward. The golf program at the Brooklyn Campus, he says, is successful and has been so for a couple of years. Prior to his arrival, Spearpoint was also friends with a student who graduated from LIU last year.

The golfer, who is also a fan of rugby, explained that he has yet to fully adjust to the Big Apple, which he calls a “big place.” With his blue eyes lighting up at the thought, Spearpoint revealed that the most challenging thing about

For Spearpoint, a typical day in England consisted of getting up at 7 a.m. and being at school by 8 p.m. School lasted till 3:30 p.m. After returning home, Spearpoint went off to practice for two or three hours. Depending on how his body felt after practice, he then went to the gym. After that, he tried to work on his homework before heading to bed.
