The Fired Arts: Curated Selections from Royal Doulton, Wedgwood and Boehm SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 2019 AT 10AM EST The lost techniques of fired ceramic arts comes to spectacular life at Whitley’s Auctioneers. Whitley’s head auctioneer and founder, Arron Rimpley, is honored to present the private collection of Open Salts from the estate of world renowned Royal Doulton collector, Elaine Cooper, expert and author of the book Doulton Open Salts. The auction also includes Royal Doulton Flambé manufactured under the supervision of Charles Noke in the early 20th century and rare, otherworldly Fairyland Lustre produced at Wedgwood’s Etruria Works ceramics factory in Stoke-on-Trent, by artist Daisy Makeig-Jones. Some of the rarest Royal Doulton Figures from three of the most important private collections in the United States are also for sale. Whitley’s Auctioneers would like to thank Louise Irvine, the Executive Director of the Wiener Museum of Decorative Arts, for sharing her vast knowledge and research to highlight some of the Royal Doulton, Wedgwood and Boehm pieces featured in this auction catalog. Louise was able to provide valuable information about many rare and elusive pieces. DOULTON BURSLEM DEVIL 1893 One of the very first Doulton figures depicts Mephistopheles, a demon who corrupts men and collects the souls of the damned for Lucifer. Charles Noke, the pioneering modeler of Doulton figures, originally modeled this figure in an ivory Vellum finish, which currently presides over the Fantastique exhibit at WMODA. In 1897, Charles Noke began experimenting with decorated Vellum and this Devil RA2363 was painted in a vivid scarlet and gold costume in Robert Allen’s studio. DOULTON BURSLEM MEPHISTOPHELES & MARGUERITE Noke experimented with some novel double-sided figures during the 1890s. The first featured Mephistopheles standing back to back with the modest Marguerite, who is seduced in Goethe’s tale of Dr. Faust. In the literary legend, Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles, the personification of the devil, in order to gain worldly knowledge and sensual pleasure. Noke’s first Vellum figure made its debut at the Chicago Exhibition in 1893.

THE OPEN SALTS COLLECTION OF ELAINE COOPER Whitley’s Auctioneers is proud to offer a selection from the collection of Elaine Cooper. Collected over a lifetime, the collection reflects the late author and collector’s enduring interest in ceramics, and her passion for the decorative open salts produced by Royal Doulton and other British and European studios. Ms. Cooper, who passed away in 2018, lived in Southern California and was an active member of the Open Salt Seekers of the West (OSSOTW), which promotes the study, collecting and preservation of open salts, the incredibly beautiful decorative ceramics that graced the tables of both the mighty and common into the Edwardian Age. Nearly a century later, in 2009, Elaine Cooper compiled her recollections in an authoritative book, Doulton Open Salts: Lambeth, Burslem, Royal (Xlibris, 80 pages). Many of the open salts featured in Mrs. Cooper’s historically important work — which include the works of George Tinworth, Charles Noke, Hannah Barlow, and other masters from Royal Doulton, Doulton Lambeth, and Doulton Burslem — figure prominently in this auction collection, along with other rare and unusual pieces.

THE ALLURE OF LAMBETH The first Doulton factory was established in Lambeth, London in 1815 making functional salt-glazed stoneware pottery. Henry Doulton began experimenting with art pottery in the 1860s and set up a specialist studio in 1871 employing students from the local art school. George Tinworth, the first Doulton artist, became renowned for his religious sculptures in terracotta. However, he amused himself between major commissions by creating stoneware menu holders and other table ornaments depicting mice engaged in human pursuits. Hannah Barlow became famous for her animal designs incised into the stoneware clay and her sister Florence specialized in birds decorated in the pâte-sur-pâte and tube-lined techniques. By the 1880s, the studio had grown to encompass more than 300 artists, mainly young women.

DOULTON LAMBETH FAIENCE Hannah Barlow was the first lady artist to join Doulton’s Lambeth studio in 1871. She specialized in animal designs from life which typically she incised deftly into Doulton’s salt-glazed stoneware body. She filled sketchbooks with studies of the pets in her private menagerie and frequently visited London zoo for inspiration. Very occasionally, Hannah painted her animal scenes on Lambeth Faience tiles and plaques. Horses grazing in the English countryside were one of her favorite subjects, but kangaroos are most unusual in her work. There was a huge demand for Doulton’s new art pottery in Australia, thanks to their enthusiastic agent, John Shorter, and Hannah occasionally responded to special orders.

ROYAL DOULTON KINGSWARE Royal Doulton Kingsware was first developed by Charles Noke in the late 1890s. Originally the rich brown body with relief decoration was used for vases, tea wares and smoking accessories. For decoration, Noke used many of his favorite subjects, including Dickens characters, swashbuckling heroes and popular sports. Kingsware proved to be particularly suitable for whisky flasks and famous distillers, such as Dewar’s of Perth, commissioned a wide range of Kingsware designs featuring popular literary and historical characters from the early 1900s until the 1930s. Very occasionally Kingsware pieces were customized for presentation purposes, such as this rare silver overlay vase.

ROYAL DOULTON SENSATIONAL SUNG Royal Doulton’s most stunning glaze effect is known as Sung in tribute a tribute to the ancient dynasty of Chinese potters who pioneered the use of high temperature rouge flambé glazes. Art director, Charles J. Noke added lustrous shades of blue and purple to the traditional flame red glaze to create new mottled, veined and feathered designs. Prestige artists at Doulton decorated under-glaze with dramatic dragons, exotic birds of paradise, and shimmering shoals of fish. Landscapes were also popular on flambé wares and ranged from the hills and mountains of rural England to exotic desert scenes with pyramids and palm trees.

ROYAL DOULTON SENSATIONAL SUNG Charles Noke was particularly fascinated with the visions of fairyland in J. M. Barrie’s classic book Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. Arthur Rackham’s illustrations of the gnomes who lived in the tree roots inspired several Sung vases as well as a popular Series ware pattern and a figure.

WEDGWOOD FAIRYLAND LUSTRE Wedgwood’s Fairyland Lustre was the creation of Daisy Makeig-Jones, whose unique visions of the supernatural world captured the public imagination between 1915 and 1930. Complex metallic glazes developed by Wedgwood were decorated on-glaze and fired up to six times to achieve the glimmering rainbow effects. There are over 50 fantastic scenes to collect in a variety of lustrous colors. Included here are a Leapfrogging Elves bowl with a flame sky, a Candlemas vase, a ruby glazed Firbolgs vase, an emerald glaze Butterflies cup, and a Willow box in coral and gold.

ROYAL DOULTON AN OLD KING
ROYAL DOULTON GUY FAWKES
An Old King was first modeled by Charles Noke in 1919 but is mainly known to collectors from the later version which was introduced to the HN collection as a prestige figure in 1954. The earlier versions of the figure, HN358, HN623 and HN1801 were not discovered in time to illustrate in the classic reference book Royal Doulton Figures, which was published in 1994. Given Charles Noke’s theatrical interests, it seems likely that An Old King was inspired by Henry Irving’s famous production of Macbeth in 1888. The play was set in the early 11th century and the costumes for Macbeth and King Duncan were designed by Charles Cattermole.
Guy Fawkes tried to blow up King James and Parliament during the State Opening on 5 November 1605. Fawkes was a convert to the Catholic faith and was part of a group who planned to end Protestant rule in England with the explosion. The plot was discovered, and Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed in the basement of the Palace of Westminster about to light 36 kegs of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was executed and to this day, on November 5th, his effigy is burnt on bonfires around Britain. Charles Noke modeled a sinister cloaked figure of Guy Fawkes in 1918. Three different colorways were produced plus an extraordinary version decorated in Sung glazes by Harry Nixon.

DOULTON PIONEERING FIGURES The first Doulton figures were shown at the World Columbian Exposition in 1893, held to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving in the New World. The centerpiece of the exhibit from Doulton’s Burslem factory was a monumental vase surmounted by Columbus. A towering figure of Columbus, 20 inches tall, was produced in an ivory porcelain body known as Vellum and was later fitted as an electric lamp. This early Vellum figure is so rare that it was only recorded as a pattern book illustration in the classic reference book Royal Doulton Figures published in 1994. There is one other known in the WMODA collection.

RARE ROYAL DOULTON FIGURES Robert Burns is Scotland’s national poet (1759-1896) and his most famous song Auld Lang Syne resounds across the world at New Year celebrations. On Burns Night, January 25, the bard is honored by Scots who recite his poems and enjoy a Burns Supper of traditional Scottish fare. Burns is affectionately known as the ‘Ploughman’s Poet’ as he was a farmer before achieving literary success. He leans on a plough in the famous statue by F. W. Pomeroy, which inspired the rare Royal Doulton figure by Ernest Light, head of the Stoke Art School. The harsh realities of rural life were also observed by Charles J. Noke in his Shepherd HN81. In this imposing figure, Noke captures the rugged and lonely life of the hardy men, who are out at all hours and in all weathers to rescue their new born lambs. The Shepherd is listed as extremely rare in the Charlton Standard Catalog of Royal Doulton Figures 12th edition.

ROYAL DOULTON MIRTH & MELANCHOLY Jesters fascinated Charles Noke throughout his life and they appear in many different guises in the Royal Doulton collection. His iconic seated Jester made its debut in the Vellum body in 1892. Less familiar is the double-sided figure of a Jester, known as Mirth & Melancholy or the Laughing Philosopher. On one side the jester has a mischievous grin and on the other he holds his chin in deep contemplation. The model was originally produced in pastel colored Vellum and was fully decorated as the Double Jester for the HN figure series in 1920.

ROYAL DOULTON ST. GEORGE St. George, the dragon-slayer, was portrayed several times in the Royal Doulton figure collection. In the Christian legend, St. George, the patron saint of England, killed a fire-breathing dragon to save a princess in distress. His story dates from the 11th century and is derived from the monster vanquishing champions of classical myth. His heroism inspired medieval tales of chivalry and knights in battle. This magnificent study of St. George on his white charger was modeled by Alan Maslankowski in 2001. The limited edition of 50 was not completed so it is hard to find today.

ROYAL DOULTON EUROPA The classical myth of Europa and the Bull was a popular subject with porcelain artists in the early 1900s as can be seen in the Fantastique exhibit at WMODA. The beautiful mortal Europa was seduced by Zeus/Jupiter, the king of the gods, who transformed himself into a tame bull. He then swam with her on his back to Crete where she became queen and the continent of Europe is named after her. The early Royal Doulton figure of Europa was modelled by Ernest W. Light, the head of Stoke School of Art, in 1918.

RARE CHARACTER JUGS Royal Doulton character jugs were another of Charles Noke’s great ideas for collectors and they were first introduced in 1934. Production was disrupted during World War II and the first model and color variations appeared in the aftermath. For example, the Cavalier’s goatee beard was shaved off and the Clown acquired different face paint and wigs. The rare character jug colorways have long appealed to collectors and an intensive study was made by Steve Mullins, owner of the American Toby Jug Museum, in his book A Century of Royal Doulton Character & Toby Jugs.

LENCI I TRITONI The Lenci factory was established in 1919 in Turin, Italy by Elena Konig and Enrico Scavini. Initially they produced felt boudoir dolls, which became a craze with young women during the Jazz Age. Lenci diversified into ceramic production in 1927 under the direction of Elena. She designed many of the first Lenci figurines of beautiful women, finding inspiration in the contemporary fashions and interests of Italian society in the 1930s. Lenci also collaborated with local artists, including Sandro Vacchetti and Abele Jacobi, and their fantasy subjects of mermaids and tritons were particularly popular. The work of the Lenci factory is detailed in Alfonso Panzetta’s reference book Le Ceramiche Lenci Catalogo Dell’Archivo Storico 1928-1964.

JEAN COCTEAU LARGE CHARGER MASQUE D’EGYPTIEN Jean Cocteau, the French poet, writer and filmmaker, is best known for his novel Les Enfants Terribles. He was also a very talented visual artist and all his life drew as much as he wrote. He designed lithographs, prints and a series of frescoes during the 1950s. In 1957, he met Marie Madeline Jolly and Philippe Madeline at their Villefranche pottery and fell in love with clay. According to Madeline, Cocteau created his own style, spare and unadorned, simply “tatooing the clay.” In all Cocteau created more than 300 distinctive ceramic designs before his death in 1963. This large, earthenware charger entitled Masque D’Egyptien, is signed by the artist, Jean Cocteau (1889-1963). It is marked Edition Originale de Jean Cocteau, Atelier Madeline Jolly.

LALIQUE René Lalique is the most celebrated Art Deco designer in glass. He began his artistic career as a jeweler in Paris and began experimenting with decorative glass in the early 1900s. In 1921, there was such a high demand for Lalique’s luxury designs that he built a large glass-works in Alsace, where he was inundated with commissions. The 1925 Paris Exhibition marked the climax of Lalique’s career as a glassmaker. His beautiful opalescent glass was used to create sensual sculptures, vases and bowls which were a triumph of Art Deco design. This Art Deco stylized Aztec design in molded, frosted and enameled glass, introduced in 1926, is a fine example of Lalique’s work. Molded mark R. LALIQUE. Featured in René Lalique: Maître-Verrier by Felix Marcilhac, Paris, 2011.

THE MARTIN BROTHERS The quirky bird jars produced by the Martin Brothers are the most extraordinary and collectible designs of the Victorian Arts & Crafts era. They were modeled by Robert Wallace Martin, a sculptor who discovered the artistic potential of terracotta and stoneware, and opened his own pottery in Southall, South London with his brothers Walter and Edwin. The first Martin birds date from 1880 and they represent professional types familiar to Victorians in avian form, including generals, admirals, judges, and barristers.

LLADRÓ Lladró, the Spanish porcelain company, is renowned for elegant figurines decorated in subtle pastel colors, which have been produced since the 1950s. Less familiar are their High Porcelain prestige pieces which are made in a stoneware body with rich hand-painted enamel colors highlighted in gold. The High Porcelain collection represents the highest level of excellence and virtuosity of the Lladró artists and production of these spectacular pieces is extremely limited. Francisco Polope modeled Winged Beauty in 2012 as one of his collection of High Porcelain fantasy subjects. She symbolizes Juno, the Queen of the gods, whose chariot was drawn by her sacred peacock. According to the classical myth, Juno’s watchman Argos lost his 100 eyes to the peacock when he failed to prevent Jupiter/Zeus from visiting the beautiful mortal Io, who had been transformed into a heifer.

BOEHM PORCELAIN Exquisite porcelain flowers, birds and animals were produced at the Boehm factory in Trenton, New Jersey from 1950 until 2014. The studio was established by Edward Marshall Boehm who was encouraged to pursue his art professionally by his wife, Helen. She admired his clay models of cattle and horses which he produced in his spare time during his first job in farm management. Boehm embarked on a study of ceramics to give his work permanence and preserve the beauty of nature. He trained a staff of artists to cast, decorate and fire his sculptures using a unique porcelain slip combined with algae to create flexibility and luminous translucency. Porcelain flowers were formed petal by petal, inspired by his beautiful garden and aviary on the Delaware River where he studied flowers and birds from nature. Boehm’s work is regarded as the finest American art sculpture, displayed in museums around the world and collected by presidents and princes.
