The Contextual City

The new city of Ningo-Prampram lies in Ghana on an empty land, with pre-existing informal settlements and small villages, that is being designed by UNhabitat as their new urban planning project. After reflecting on their masterplan: https://www.fabrications.

nl/portfolio-item/ningo-prampramexpansion/

communal

This ‘city model grid’ ignores the existence of settlements and lays out its perfect image of a city; so we decided to go back a step, taking these villages and informal settlements as our base, and design according to the existing context, trying to solve the conflict between existing and new. The design process starts as analysing which architectural elements and typologies work best for the ghanaian people, since Ghana is mostly formed of organic streets and irreglarly scatered courtyard housing. Then, using these elements to create design rules and imagining the built phases over time on different scenarios of 1x1 km with different contextual situations.

“On Saturday 20 June 2015, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly bulldozed Old Fadama, the largest informal settlement in Accra. Roughly 50,000 people, mostly migrants from Ghana’s northern regions, as well as others from the West Africa sub region, are said to have lost their properties during the demolition exercise, and many became homeless overnight. This is the not the first time that slum clearances and forced evictions have taken place in the name of the greater public good.” http://migratingoutofpoverty.blogspot.com/2015/07/ informal-settlements-in-ghana.html

Community Centre

Our bachelor deign studio’s locatin was in Marsa Alam. The purpose of the studio was to look for light construction techniques that would be sustainable, accomodate passive architecture and promote sustainability. Our construction system was mainly wood, also researching systems that weren’t complex. We mainly chose the HEPCA site in Marsa Alam for its location in a place with high potential of tourist atractions, and for its potential of creating an identity for the place. A complex that educates tourists about the Bedouin lifestyle and their traditions. My bachelor topic was designing a community centre for the local bedouins who worked inside the educational/entertainment complex we designed for tourists. As the building itself was designed for unique users, I had to design the building differently for it to stand out, since our main concept was promoting the bedouin culture and create an identity for the place. So the building was designed accordng to the bedouin tent’s longitudinal proportions according to the grid created on the master plan with a square mass on the first floor that was rotated and broke the grid to create a significance to the building. The whole ground floor is dedicated to the community and the locals, with a clinic, meeting rooms, classrooms, lounge, events and market space, dining and kitchenette, women’s area (respecting their culture), nursery and finally a wood construction workshop. But since the first floor’s different orientation and attractiveness to the tourists it was dedicated to become an exhibition with a separate entrance for the bedouins to be given the chance to promote their culture and traditions and for tourists to access and get exposed to.

building module // Our main site’s concept was revolved around the site’s main natural element, the earthquake crack. And based on the Bedouins’ lifestyle of constantly moving, seeking water and shade, we created a grid that follows the crack, resulting in building modules that allow flexible and changable architecture, to serve functions, the environment or future extensions. We used CLT panels as our main structural wooden element, and with planning the modulare units, different variations were created and are used to design the different buldings in our complex

spacial concept // part of our module’s concept is the architecture’s flexibility, hence the flexibility of spaces inside the building. The diagram shows how the building could function with normal spaces and area that suffice. On the other hand, when more areas are neede, the spaces could be adjusted by adding and removing panels.

facade concept // the other part of the building’s concept follows the bedouins traditions of adjusting their tent according to their desired weather conditions. Given the module’s flexibility, a design proposal to adjust the facade in winter and summer accordingly to accomodate the heat, wind and light needed inside the building.

E-mobility Centre

Located in the new capital of Cairo, we were asked to design an e-mobilty centre that saves energy and acts as a self sustainable building. The centre serves as an exhibition for the modern BMW e-cars. As a concept, we thought of the experience of the user; taking them through the exhibition, following through the history of BMW, and getting glimpses of the research process along the way. Using materials, lighting and room temperature friendly designs, the building uses less energy to serve its purpose and promotes self sustainability to people.
