The Three Investment

RISK CATEGORIES

What is your financial risk tolerance? How much money are you prepared to put on the line to increase your wealth? Are you prepared to accept risk in exchange for much higher returns? Where you fit here determines your investment personality type.

CONSERVATIVE – SAFE TO LOW RISK / LOW TO MODERATE RETURNS. Conservative investor types aren’t willing to risk losing money. They are willing to accept lower returns on their investments in exchange for more assurance that their money will not lose value. In short, conservative investors want to be assured that their monthly statements show an increase in value, no matter how small that increase may be. Their only reduction in balance should be due to their own withdrawals. Conservative investments include CD’s, treasury securities, savings bonds, fixed and indexed annuities, insured municipal bonds.

MODERATE – MODERATE RISK / MEDIUM RETURNS Most investors fall into or around this category. Most are looking for ways to finance their retirement years or put away for their children’s college tuition.

They have a little extra money around that they can afford to tie up in medium to long-term investments and don’t foresee needing immediate access to their money. They accept that there may be small setbacks but generally anticipate medium to higher returns. Moderate investments include corporate bonds, preferred stocks, utilities, income mutual funds and blue-chip stocks.

AGGRESSIVE – HIGH RISK / HIGH RETURNS These investors are really in it for aggressive wealth growth. Most can afford to take their hits, but really are counting on high returns. They are speculative, watching the news and the markets to determine which sectors are growing (though some may hedge their bets on declining markets as well). They are prepared to expose their money to be able to cash in on more profitable sectors. Aggressive investors tend to be more attracted to funds that invest in derivatives, penny stocks and commodities.

Choosing INVESTMENTS Use these tips to help you find the best investments for you.

1. Start by doing an assessment of your current financial position, your savings and income versus your expenses. This will give you an idea of how much you can afford to invest. An assessment of your short-term and long-term goals will then give you an idea of what sort of investment to make. There are tools online to help you with this exercise or you can discuss this with your financial advisor.

2. Your self-review will also help you determine the duration of your investment. Time frames will vary for different types of investments, and pulling your investment early may result in penalties. You can avoid situations like this through forward planning.

3. Now that you’ve figured out your financial situation, it’s time to assess the level of risk you are willing to tolerate. As a rule, the safer your investment, the lower your returns where as high-risk investments can lead to very high returns. Draw up your investment plan using online tools or in collaboration with your investment advisor.

4. Even aggressive investors often use diversification to reduce their risks. By diversifying your portfolio with different types of investments you can always fall back on the others when one investment underperforms.

5. Investing is an effective way of earning more money and putting away funds for future dreams and eventualities like home ownership, tuition and retirement. It can also be exciting and challenging depending on how involved you want to be. a. Beginning Stage - If you’ve just dipped your toe in for the first time, chances are you could be a little overwhelmed by it all. That’s when you need an advisor to guide you through. He’s an old hand…you can learn from him along the way. b.Mid-Stage - As you become more familiar with the world of investments you also learn where to gather the right intelligence and make better decisions. Maybe you need a second opinion or maybe you don’t have the time so you need your trusty advisor to carry out most of your business. c. Experienced Stage – You are now very hands on and enjoy the thrill of the investing on your own. You are confident in your understanding of the markets and aware of the risks.
