Icon Project

The brief was to mindstorm unique shapes that could be subtracted from the Helvetica character in order to represent various subjects and objects whose names begin with the character being showcased.

The next step in the design process involved choosing the best concepts and reworking them digitally in Illustrator. For this instance, I chose to represent a “Key and Keyhole” Icon inside the letter K.

Helvetica Character Cut-outs. Illustrator.

After choosing the most succesful iteration of the “Key and Keyhole” icon, I experimented with various textures and gradients to achieve a flat look as well as a three-dimensional one.

The next step in the design process involved choosing the best concepts and reworking them digitally in Illustrator. For this instance, I chose to represent a “Jigsaw” Icon inside the letter J.

After choosing the most succesful iteration of the “Jigsaw” icon, I experimented with different overlays, colors, and gradients to mimic the beautiful colors and scenes usually found in jigsaw puzzles.

The next step in the design process involved choosing the best concepts and reworking them digitally in Illustrator. For this instance, I chose to represent a “Hacksaw” Icon inside the letter H .

After choosing the most succesful iteration of the “Hacksaw” icon, I experimented with different colors, textures and gradients to mimic the materials that hacksaws usually cut through.

Ligature Project

The brief was to combine characters in various font families to create the “27th Letter of the Alphabet”. In addition, I was asked to render the result in both handpainted form and digital form.

In this concept I combined the letters F and J to form “The 27th Letter of the Alphabet”. I was inspired by the word Fjord which is the perfect place to utilize this new character.

Hand Painted Ligature. Plaka on White board.

In this concept I combined the letters G and Q to form “The 27th Letter of the Alphabet”. I was inspired by the Queer Generation. I wanted to create a logo for a fictitious non-profit or quarterly magazine.

In this concept I combined the letters L and U to form “The 27th Letter of the Alphabet”. I was inspired by the word Lulu but was more mesmerized by the duplicative nature of the final concept which can also double as an abstract letter B.

Design Hero Project

The brief was to find a prominent designer to research and study their style. Next, the brief called for both a slide presentation and an interactive poster that showcases both the designer’s work and their style.

Jacqueline Casey Inspired Exhibition Poster. InDesign. Jacqueline Casey Design Hero Presentation. InDesign.

I wanted to incorporate as many aspects of the designer’s style into each and every slide in the presentation. I used only Helvetica and tried to keep each slide as minimal as possible while at the same time showcasing Casey’s work. I paid homage to her work through building the perfect canvas for the work to be presented cohesively.

This version of the Design Hero poster follows the brief’s restriction of using only one color plus black. I followed the style of Casey’s work and used a large graphic and combined it with smaller font in the grid to showcase her signature look while also staying true to one of her favorite color palettes: black and red.

Cube Project

The brief was to create type on the third dimension by applying the ligature conceived in the previous project to a physical three-dimensional paper cube.

Ligature Experiments. Pencil on tracing paper

“LU-LU” Ligature Experiment. Illustrator.

My goal with placing the ligature into the cube was to maintain the geometric nature of the final iterations. I also wanted the cubes to interact with one another rather than being stand-alone objects.

The “LU-LU” Cube

The final iteration of the cube was created from the combination of multiple ligatures using the letters L and U. This final design only includes strokes and curves from these original characters. The final piece is meant to be an interactive art experience giving the user endless arrangements and also unlimited creative space that is not limited to only one dimesion.

The brief was to explore the first techniques used for animation and motion pictures. I was asked to create a storyboard of my finished ligature to be animated in Photoshop.
