HIROSHI & OSAMU WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?

We’re up to our necks in a bit of a classified mission, which we really can’t talk about in case our boss is reading this. But when we’re not undercover, I’ve been hitting the beach recently, since the weather has cooled down nicely. (One of us has to look good.) I’ve also been spending a lot of time in the Japanese bookstore in the Dubai Mall. They have a better manga collection than I’d ever expect to find outside Japan. I love it.

Marhaba. I’ve been using my spare time to improve my Arabic. I’m putting a lot of time into learning because I really think it’s good to be able to speak to people in their own language. And who knows, one day it might come in handy for a mission.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING IN THE UAE?

I really like the weather. Where I’m from in Japan, the winters are very long and very cold, so it’s good to be able to walk around without several layers of clothes all the time. And even better, you’re never far from the beach here. That’s what I’ll miss the most about not being in the UAE, so I guess that must be the best thing for me.

I really admire the Arab culture. The language, the lifestyle, even the incense they burn. It’s all totally different than what I’m used to, which I find really stimulating. And if you ever go to Japan, you’ll see how much of a hurry everyone’s in. People here are much more laid back, which is a nice change.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL FOOD?

I’m a really big fan of shawarma. It’s cheap, filling and really tasty. Perfect. I’m also a big fan of the local seafood. Hammour is my favourite, but I like all of them, to be honest. I love to go to the fish market to see all the fresh fish. It’s great.

It’s not a food, but I like the brunch culture here, because it means I can try so many more things. Kenshin (our boss in Japan) doesn’t pay us as well as we’d like, so for a treat, all-you-can-eat brunches are great. As far as my favourite food, I’m a big fan of burgers and hotdogs. So, not that Arabic.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO LIVE IN A HOTEL?

If you ever find yourself living in a hotel for months, don’t share a room with someone who snores. It’s very annoying.

It has its ups and downs. It’s a pretty small living space, which we’re used to in Japan, but I usually choose my roommate. On the other hand, the bed is made every day and I don’t have to cook or wash up after myself. So in that way, it’s wonderful.

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE STAYING IN THE MIDDLE EAST?

Until our boss recalls us. The new Chevrolet Cruze and Malibu are causing him to lose a lot of sleep at the moment, so it won’t be anytime soon. But that’s fine, there’s a lot of the Middle East we haven’t seen yet.

Until we complete our mission and Kenshin lets us return home. I’m having a great time here, though. We’ve had a lot of help and support from locals and fellow agents, so the longer we stay, the better, if you ask me. Which you did, actually.

Hiroshi: Lebanon was amazing. The nightclubs in Beirut are world class. Especially the Sky bar. I danced for eight hours straight. Fair point.

What’s been your favourite country so far?

Hiroshi: It’s our boss. I think he secretly gets a kick out of making us dress up. We feel for you.

You’ve been spotted wearing some rather snazzy suits, what’s all that about?

Osamu: Personally, I love it. It gives me a chance to express who I really am inside. If you love suits like that, you deserve to lose a point and think about what you’ve done.

Hiroshi: It’s still better than downtown Tokyo. Over there you’re in traffic so long you start getting parking fines. Points for making us chuckle.

What are you making of the Dubai traffic?

Osamu: It’s a lot better now the Metro is up and running. When all the stations open the traffic should be fine. The Metro continues to impress.

Hiroshi: A new 2010 Camaro. Bumblebee yellow with hockey stripes, and even a little Autobot symbol on the side. Cool, we’ll grant you, but come on.

What’s the coolest car you’ve seen driving around the UAE?

Hiroshi: Yes. It’s not as fast as Tokyo, but you get a much better view. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?

Have you ridden the Dubai Metro yet?

Hiroshi Hiroshi: My favourite way to kill the time is annoying Osamu. I once put water in his mouth while he was asleep and he almost drowned. We’re pretty sure that’s not funny.

Hiroshi: I miss my boss. He is the best boss in the world. Ha ha ha. Only joking, I hope he doesn’t read this. Everybody reads iQ, you should know that.

Hiroshi earns kudos for not loving the wacky suits, but is let down by his lack of faith in iQ’s expansive readership.

Osamu: For me the UAE is the best. The people are friendly, the restaurants are great, and the beaches are amazing. Flattery will get you everywhere.

Osamu: My boss would kill me, but I really like the new Chevrolet Cruze. This reverse psychology isn’t fooling us.

Do you miss anything about home?

Osamu: Japanese game shows. They may be crazy, but they’re also, erm, actually no, they’re just crazy. The joys of YouTube.
