Beat the Heat with

Succulents

Wedding season starts to rev up its speed just like the summer heat in June. The most popular floral

options, like peonies, hydrangeas, and roses prefer the cooler temperatures and will many times wilt before too long in the sun. So it makes sense to consider heat-tolerant floral options when planning, especially in Wisconsin when Mother Nature changes her mind in a flash. May’s Floral of Eau Claire, says, “With their unique and natural versatility, succulent popularity is soaring. Succulents provide a touch of color, texture, and style. They are hardy and a refreshing alternative to flowers. Surprisingly they come in a variety of colors ranging from shades of green and grey to soft pink and purple.” Yes, mini jade plants do much more than look cute on your reception tables. Add them into your bouquet for a statement-making and heat-loving option. The parting gift of a potted Rosette - Echeveria Perle is one your guests will love for years.

Terra cotta pots filled with green-and-pink succulents are the perfect favor. Upgrade them with a pretty tag or note written straight onto the pot like this one from Cynthia Chung Photography.

Wisconsin summers can be mild or intense, so if you’re worried of the heat ruining your bouquet, go for one oversized succulent surrounded by greenery like this example from KT Merry Photography.

Potted succulents become the perfect summer place card for each guest as seen by Coralie Lescieux Photography.

DIY lovers will go gagga over this fantastic décor idea. Find oversized letters at your local craft store and create a statement-making décor element by planting mixed succulents within the frame. You could do the same with giant numbers to help guide guests to their seats. Sarah Murray Photography

Boutonnieres made with succulents are simple yet elegant and can be combined with berries or other whispy partners to make the perfect look. Heather Hawkins Photography

Want a Smokin’ Reception Meal? Try Chuckwagon BBQ! Chuck and Clare Harmston, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, had wanted to start a catering business for a long time, but, as Chuck explains, “My wife, Clare, and I have eleven children and really couldn’t start a business during that time. But as they grew up and started their lives and careers, we were able to give it a try.” And although Chuckwagon BBQ has only been in business for two years, Chuck has been smoking meats for many years for friends and family. Chuckwagon BBQ is popular with barn weddings, as well as other venues. Bridal Guide (www. bridalguide.com) lists barn weddings as one of the top 5 wedding trends, noting, “Homespun barn weddings, filled with branches, lanterns, and nature-inspired décor, are more popular than ever.” Chuck and Clare have found that a food choice that pairs well with barn weddings is barbeque. “I think the trend with barn weddings is the country setting and the way the owners of the barn have transformed them into beautiful buildings without losing the country feeling when you’re in them,” Chuck says. Chuck and Clare serve up hickory smoked meats and homemade sides, including BBQ chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, coleslaw, cashew chicken salad, and cheesy potatoes (just to name a few). They have a mobile kitchen for barn weddings or other venues without a kitchen, and can serve more than 370 in either an indoor or outdoor setting. Couples can modify the menu slightly, but the Harmstons prefer to stick with what they do best. For one wedding they catered, a couple wanted individual milk cartons like they used to have in school, so Chuck found some—both regular milk and chocolate milk. Chuck notes, “We do our best to accommodate, but we really specialize in smoked BBQ meats and homemade sides at an affordable price. So if someone is asking us to step way outside of the food or service we specialize in, I encourage them to find a caterer that better fits their needs.” Couples can choose to have a complete self-serve buffet-style meal for between $10 to $14 per plate, depending on food choices. That includes buffet setup, plates, plasticware, napkins, BBQ sauces, and buffet cleanup. Chuck sums up, “Our company in a nut shell is a self-serve buffet style with great food and service at affordable prices. For being a company that isn’t even two years old, and as busy as we are, I think there is a great need for our style of catering. We operate out of a licensed commercial kitchen in Menomonie and have a real nice mobile kitchen that we take out on site.” For more information, call 715-308-7241, visit www.facebook.com/chuckwagonwi, or stop in 3375 Kothlow Ave., #20 in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Are we able to have a wedding at the club even if we are not members?

Get Married at the Club!

Yes, we are open for everyone who would like an event here. We don’t just do weddings - you could also have your rehearsal dinner, or bridal shower here as well. Come take a tour and see what we have to offer.

Waiting List Because there are so many venues out there we don’t have a waiting list.

Booking Most couples will book a year in advance. The time allows you a chance to get the vendors and date you would like. I have had wedding where we had 5 months. The choice is up to you, I am here to assist you as much as you need. 8 | w ww. r ec eption tofo llo w.co m

Menu You are able to test food for your reception. We do offer two different tastings. One would be where we invite all the weddings for the year to enjoy a large sampling from our banquet menu. If you are unable to attend the tasting, we do offer another option. The other option would be selecting items from our banquet menu and enjoy a wonderful dinner.

Packages We offer two different options, a ceremony reception or reception. Because we do one wedding here per day, we can’t offer just a ceremony only. Regardless of the option you select the wedding lawn and gardens are yours for photos.

Amazing Skin on Your Big Day

by Sarah Green, owner and licensed aesthetician

B

eing a licensed aesthetician, the main goal I have for all of my clients is to have gorgeous, healthy skin. No more so than for a client on her big day. When new clients come in to see me we get them started on a skin care plan to ensure that when their wedding day comes they are going to be glowing, stunning brides. Here are a few tips to help you have amazing skin on your big day. 1. See an aesthetician to get started on a good skin care plan a minimum of three to six months before your wedding. I suggest a consultation with an aesthetician early to see what they suggest and to have a treatment plan put together. This allows you a chance to see what the aesthetician offers and also to make sure that you feel comfortable and trust your practitioner.

2. Don't wait until the last month before your wedding to start skin treatments. While treatments like the HydraFacial or chemical peels can and will leave you with absolutely gorgeous, glowing skin, those with more acneprone skin could experience “purging,” which looks and acts like a breakout, when your skin is flushing out all of the oil and debris that builds up. For some people, if they had a blemish starting under their skin, these treatments will bring them to the surface, which is actually a good thing, but not right before your wedding. Also for those brides needing skin corrections, a month may not be enough time to give you that skin you've been dreaming of. 3. Don't start using a new skin care product the week of your wedding. Sometimes our skin can react badly to new ingredients in some skin care products, which can lead to breakouts, irritation, or sometimes a rash. If you are going to try something new, make sure that you give yourself at least a month or even two prior to your big day. 4. Waxing. If you aren't already on a current waxing schedule, you will want to get started at least two months in advance. This will allow you plenty of time to make sure you won't have any type of reaction to the wax. Always make sure you are going to a reputable spa and that the aesthetician is experienced in waxing. Starting in advance will prevent a last-minute skin irritation for your big day! 5. Get lots of sleep. We all know that we should try to get eight hours of sleep a night. This allows our bodies to recharge and will help you to have a gorgeous, refreshed complexion. 6. Treatments to help hyper-pigmentation (sunspots, sun damage) like laser, medical micro-needling (SkinPen), and chemical peels, are phenomenal ways to help achieve your desired results. However, these treatments can sometimes take multiple treatments spaced three to four weeks apart. Be sure to get started on these treatments as soon as possible so that you can see your best results on your big day! 7. Drink lots of water. While we all know we should try to drink water every day, sometimes we get to the end of our day and haven't had a 12 | w ww.r ec eption tofo llo w.co m

single sip of water! Water not only hydrates us, but it also flushes toxins from our bodies. Drinking lots of water will allow your skin to look fresh, hydrated, and glowing. 8. MOISTURIZE. I can’t stress enough how important moisture is for our skin. As I stated above, drinking plenty of water is essential to healthy, glowing skin, but we also need to be sure we are properly moisturizing our skin from the outside as well. Products like hyaluronic acid (a natural hydrating molecule found IN our bodies) will help to hydrate your skin but also plump and firm as well. It’s amazing what moisture can do for our complexion. 9. Exercise. Not only will exercise make you feel better and ensure that your dress fits perfectly on your wedding day, but it will also help de-stress and relax your mind. Exercise will also help keep your skin healthy and glowing. Even a brisk walk is an excellent way to exercise. Take even twenty minutes out of your day for cardio or a walk, and you'll feel the difference. 10. Spray tan. Many brides want that gorgeous glow on their big day but (smartly!) don't want to risk damaging their skin. A spray tan like Sakura's customized technician spray tans (not booth spray tanning) using our vegan NorvellPro Venetian product, will leave you with that perfect, "just off the beach" glow. I also suggest trying out a spray tan a few weeks before your wedding to make sure you're happy with the color! Spray tans last about five days and then begin to fade, so make sure to time your spray tan so that you are still having your gorgeous glow. 11. Once my clients are on a great skin routine, I suggest doing a facial treatment (that they have previously done and we know will not cause any adverse reaction) the week of the wedding. Many clients will do a HydraFacial or Fire & Ice peel the day before or day of their wedding. This will leave you with an absolutely gorgeous and hydrated glow without any downtime. You will feel a difference in your skin, your makeup will apply better, and others will visibly be able to see your glow! While it can seem overwhelming and sometimes hopeless, seeing a licensed aesthetician who can guide you on the path to your best skin will take the stress out of your skin care for your big day. The last thing you need to be worried about is your skin. Let us do the work for you! Sarah Green is a licensed aesthetician and certified laser technician. She is the owner of Sakura Skin Spa in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Practicing since 2011, Sarah loves the relationships she builds with her clients and working with them to achieve the skin they dream about and deserve to have.

Be All Smiles at Your Wedding...

Kristo Orthodontics Can Help

A

midst all the other details and choices and plans for your big day, consider orthodontic treatment to prepare your teeth, and your smile. Kristo Orthodontics, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, offers experienced consultation and treatment for your big day. If this kind of treatment is something you’d like to include in your wedding preparation, it’s important to begin the process as early as possible. Michelle Larson, one of the staff at Kristo, encourages couples to come in for a free consultation. “We would suggest you come in at least a year before the wedding date to discuss your options.”

One treatment couples might want to consider is teeth whitening, and while Kristo does not do this in office, they do offer whitening kits for purchase. The most common treatment brides and grooms to-be seek is teeth straightening and function correction. This might include Invisalign or metal braces. The timeline for these procedures will vary, depending on each person’s particular needs. Larson notes: “Depending on what needs to be done, Invisalign will probably have a shorter time frame, and they are clear, so you could wear them the day of your wedding and no one would even know you have them in. If you choose to go with metal braces, we offer the option to have them off for your wedding, as there is normally only a year between engagement and wedding, and most orthodontic treatment continues for 18–24 months.”

Orthodontic treatment may be something to include in your wedding budget. Larson advises: “Some insurance plans do cover adult orthodontic treatment as part of their dental coverage. That is something that we can go over in more detail with you at your free consultation. We also offer flexible finance plans. That means there is no down payment and you pay $189 a month for the cost of treatment. Costs vary, and we would never want to quote a price without speaking with the orthodontist and allowing him to create a customized treatment plan just for you.” While it is more common for brides to seek orthodontic treatment, grooms sometimes do too. “Not as many men as women seek orthodontic treatment before a wedding, but we do have several couples that are in treatment together, right now,” Larson says. “One of the things that is important to remember with orthodontic care is that it is not about aesthetics (or cosmetics), it is about function. Someone could have perfectly straight teeth but also have an overbite, underbite, or other issue that is causing them health issues. It is extremely important to have that taken care of for the overall health of your body.” The folks at Kristo Orthodontics look forward to working with you. “Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and we are here to help make that day even more special with the smile you have always wanted,” Larson says. “When you come in for you initial exam with us, we will do a scan of your teeth, which will give us the opportunity to show you what your smile would look like at the end of your treatment. You can see the movement of all of your teeth.” For more information visit www.kristoorthodontics.com or call 715-835-5182. w w w. re c e pt i o n t o f o l l o w.com | 15

Bridesmaid Dresses When it comes to what the girls will wear, consider these helpful tips. By Elizabeth Passarella – REALSIMPLE.COM

You probably have the dress; now it’s time to find their dresses—the ones your bridesmaids will wear. Almost every bride has uttered the famous phrase, “They can wear them again!” but, truth be told, most maids don’t. So while that’s a lovely idea to keep in mind, it shouldn’t be your number one priority. Instead, focus on these things, according to Jacqueline Weppner, founder of the bridal styling house, Merci New York.

1

Take a look at your own dress. Think about your gown and overall wedding style. Is it classic, modern, or maybe vintage? Your bridesmaids’ dresses should fit the vibe. If you’re wearing a flowy, bohemian lace dress, your maids might look out of place in formal taffeta dresses.

2

Think seriously about the color. Don’t expect everyone to cast a bronze glow. “Blush and taupe are hot bridesmaid dress colors right now, but they don’t suit every skin tone. They can wash some people out,” says Weppner. If you’ve got a range of fair, olive, and dark skin tones, make sure the dress color flatters all. (Keep hair color in mind, too, if you’re choosing something unique that could clash with a redhead, for example.) You can work in a two-color palette, says Weppner, to please everyone (think pink and a darker coral)

3

Consider the season and time of day. The date of the wedding is probably a big factor in your décor— fall tones and apple centerpieces for October, peonies and spring colors for May—but the time of day matters, too. Black dresses could be perfect for November but a little forced for an outdoor, mid-day ceremony.

4

Be flexible (to a point). Most bridesmaids would like to have some input on what they’re wearing, but too many opinions can make the whole process miserable. Look for brands that offer similar dresses with different necklines, for example. You can pick the color and fabric; each girl can decide on the style most flattering for her body type.

5

Remember, it’s your day. “Don’t succumb to pressure to make everyone happy,” says Weppner. “It’s impossible.” You should keep an open mind and be understanding, but your bridesmaids are there to support you and should (ideally) work with your vision.

Prepare. Before you even head out to the fabulous bridal show you saw advertised, do some important prep work. First of all, you can save money by buying tickets ahead instead of at the door. Keeping your budget and overall plan in mind, decide what products and services you need and how much you’re willing to spend. This will help you narrow down what vendors you’ll want to spend time talking with. Another good idea is to create and print out labels ahead of time that have your name, wedding date, and contact information listed clearly. This will make it fast and easy to sign up for lots of drawings for discounts and/or free services and products. Also, arrange to have key wedding-plan decision makers attend with you. With all of you there, you will be able to make decisions on the spot if a good deal or perfect service comes up. Special email. It’s a good idea to create an email account that is totally just for wedding-related correspondence. This assures that you don’t miss a wedding-planning email in the midst of all your other email. Optimize the show’s program. Use it to mark fashions you like that you saw during the fashion show. Look it over when you first arrive, or even ahead of time if possible, and circle vendors you especially want to visit. Use the contact info listed in the program to later contact those vendors that you want to talk with further. Enjoy it! Yes, you have many plans to make, things to buy, and venues to rent. But the main thing is that you are getting married. Have fun at the show!

You want a dress that emphasizes your upper half. Think capped, poufy sleeves. Add appliqué or beading to the bodice. In contrast, chose a dress with a plain skirt and high waistline. Do NOT choose clingy fabric or cuts, and steer away from dresses with ruffly skirts or bustles.

Ball Gown

Apple or Full-figure: full bust, hips, and waistline

Simple design is your friend. A fuller skirt, angled lines, V-neckline, and waist. Princess A-line dresses work well for you. Don’t go with form-fitted dresses or ones with lots of detailing.

Apple

Petite: short height, overall smaller bust, hips, and waistline

Vertical lines will add height visually. Try mermaid or sheath dresses. Use high necklines to lengthen the torso. Try Princess style or dresses with an empire waist.

Empire

Avoid large, poufy dresses. They will only make you look wider not taller.

Rectangle: proportional bust and hips, undefined waistline

Rectangle

Look for a dress that will add curves to your body, such as the Princess style. Or try an empire waistline and lots of detail on the bodice. Off-the-shoulder necklines provide horizontal lines to break up the straighter line of your figure.

Sheath

Better not to choose a dress that clings or one requiring you to fill it out (like a darted bustline).

Inverted Triangle: full bust with small hips

Seek to highlight your lower half while de-emphasizing your upper half. Stick with a simple bodice. Try a dropped waist design, or use bows, pleats, or beading to emphasize the skirt.

Inverted Triangle

Don’t go with low-cut bodices, high waistlines, slim skirts, or decorated, accented sleeves.

Mermaid

Hourglass: full bust and hips, small waistline

You can go with almost any style of dress. A mermaid style dress would show off your curves. Or to downplay your curves, go with a simple, classic look. Just be sure to avoid very high necklines, and avoid too much decoration because it may make you look heavier than you really are.

Heyde Center for the Arts: A Vintage Wedding Venue

Christy Janeczko Photography / www.christyjphotography.com

T

he Heyde Center for the Arts has been referred to as THE place for vintage weddings, with wooden floors and trim, classic architecture styles and lines, a large ballroom, chandelier lighting, and elegant design touches. Though it is an historic building, there is air conditioning for summer months and, of course, heating for winter and fall.

of changing over the theater-style set up to the banquet set up for you while you relax with family and friends. Your package includes round or rectangular tables, chairs, adjustable chandelier lighting, and all room set up and clean up. Dressing rooms are available for the wedding party, and a sound system with a technician is provided.

The Chippewa Valley Cultural Association, Inc. (CVCA) was formed in April of 1976; however, it took a long time to complete the restoration of the building. The Heyde Center for the Arts is the current name of the historic building that was saved and restored to its present glory. During the long and arduous process of fundraising, and the renovation and restoration of the building, the association organized performances in many “borrowed spaces” around the city to raise money and community awareness. Licensed electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and other skilled and unskilled laborers have provided hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteer labor. The building was reopened as an arts center in 2000.

You may work with your choice of caterers. Several caterers have provided unique and delicious meals with great service at the venue. The center has a list of caterers they’ve worked with who have received great reviews, but they are always willing to work with new, fully licensed caterers. There is a separate room just right for a buffet line and a prep room for caterers.

When you hold your wedding and/or reception here, it not only will be a great venue for your big day, it will support the Heyde Center for the Arts’ ability to provide high quality, affordable arts and cultural opportunities to the Chippewa Valley community. Because of all the great arts events in the schedule, you should plan to book the venue for your wedding at least eighteen months in advance. The center hosts an average of thirteen weddings each year. The center features a large auditorium with the advantage of flexible seating. It can seat approximately 240 people set up banquet style and 400 people set up theater style. If you wish to hold both your ceremony and your reception at the Heyde Center for the Arts, they will take care

The center has a liquor license and can provide all alcoholic beverages services. Or, if you prefer not to serve alcohol, there is no required minimum alcoholic beverage purchase. They also provide a wide range of non-alcoholic beverages. Call the center today to learn more about this beautiful vintage venue for your wedding. w w w. re c e pt i o n t o f o l l o w.com | 45

Choosing Your Wedding Officiant By Rev. Ronnie Roll, Interfaith Minister

O

nce you’ve said, “Yes!” there is a landslide of decisions to be made, which can seem overwhelming. Determining where and when you’ll get married, whether to have a formal or informal wedding, how many people to invite, and, of course, THE DRESS. There is, however, one more very important decision: who will marry you? If you belong to a church, temple, or synagogue, you may already have this figured out. Congratulations! But for many people who are not affiliated with a congregation, you may find yourself vulnerable and overwhelmed by the choices available and not knowing what questions to ask to assure your marriage is legal.

Before someone marries you, ask to see their credentials. Assure the individual performing the ceremony can tell you what the laws and regulations are for the exact location where your wedding will take place. Laws govern who can perform a ceremony and what elements must be included, before your marriage is legally valid. The regulations are set by the country, state, and county where you will be married. Usually a judge, attorney, or justice of the peace can perform a civil ceremony. These ceremonies do not include any spiritual language, nor is the marriage spiritually blessed. In some jurisdictions, a friend or relative can perform the ceremony if they have obtained documentation that they are an “ordained minister.” Some people download a paper found online that says they are ordained. These credentials may not be accepted in the location where you are married, or by a religious community you may choose to join later. While these ceremonies may include spiritual language, the marriage cannot be spiritually blessed because the individual has not been given spiritual authority to do so from an appropriate source.

www.a1expressrental.com

For those wishing a spiritual and legally binding ceremony that includes a spiritual blessing of the couple and the marriage, there are formally trained, professional, ordained ministers who have completed a graduate level course of study through a seminary, have been given the authority to spiritually bless a union through an official seal of oil during a formal ceremony, and have been assigned to a congregational body to minister to people. These individuals usually carry all rights and privileges to use titles such as Reverend, Pastor, Rabbi, Imam, or Elder, for instance. Good luck! or most of us, one wedding is enough. All that planning, all those decisions, the worry and joy building up to your special day—and then enjoying that special day—as your one special day. Lia Trageser and George Humphrey had another idea—to get married in a different US state each year! They met through mutual friends who kept trying to set them up, but it just never worked out. She couldn’t go to the BBQ, he couldn’t make it to the baby shower. Then one day she walked into the zoo bar where he was working, and they just clicked right away. Their first/official wedding took place one year after their first official date. They eloped to Carson City, Nevada. But when they got home, they kept putting off telling anyone the big news until eventually they decided NOT to tell and to have a wedding in their home town of San Diego on the first anniversary of their Nevada wedding. So when they had the big wedding in San Diego, nobody knew they were already married. How did they come up with the idea to get married in every state? Lia explains, “At some point after the San Diego wedding, with wedding licenses from two different states— Nevada and California— we thought, ‘Hey, let’s keep going and do all of them!’” How do they find officiants and witnesses? “For the vast majority of

our weddings, we just went to the courthouse and had no witnesses,” Lia notes. “Actually, at our first wedding, the witnesses were another couple also getting married and we were their witnesses. In Portland, Oregon, the officiant brought witnesses for us. For the first ten years, nobody even knew we were doing it. There were a few years when our anniversary was on a weekend, and we couldn’t go to the courthouse. In those states we had to hire officiants. South Dakota was one of those, and we had a great experience. We got married in the town of Deadwood, and the officiant also had a vintage photo business. So our officiant not only performed the ceremony, but his wife photographed it AND they brought old west outfits for us to wear!”

Our 20th anniversary and wedding # 21. We had it in a waterfowl preserve called Creamer's Field outside Fairbanks, Alaska. We wanted a bit of a frontier feeling.

Lia’s favorite was the San Diego wedding. “We had our wedding at my sister’s house, and we had all our family and friends present. That was also our biggest wedding with seventy guests. For that one, I wore my maternal grandmother’s gown. It was silk satin, bias cut, and very clingy, because my grandma weighed 89 pounds when she wore it! Unfortunately she was not alive to be there.” The couple, however, agrees on their top five favorites after San Diego. As Lia describes, they include: 1. South Dakota, which was the first time we realized we could get creative and not just run to the Justice of the Peace.

2. Austin, Texas, was fun and memorable. We had several friends present, and we had the wedding itself on a kiddie train in the park. 3. New Orleans made the top 5 because, again, we had friends present. At that wedding, we rode up on separate bicycles and left on a tandem as our friends threw black beans instead of rice and a guest played accordion. 4. Erie, Pennsylvania, was memorable because it was at George’s sister’s house, and we had a Quaker ceremony. In that tradition, there is no officiant, as the couple simply marries each other in front of witnesses. 5. Wisconsin stands out as memorable for many reasons. We came to Cable because my college friend Heather Ludzak invited us, enticing us with promises to cater and have baby goats on hand. The ceremony was at the home of officiant Krista Love, and baby pygmy goats served as ring bearers. Meg and Erik from Emenee Studios provided photography and captured fantastic photos with Krista’s gorgeous barn, the goats, and Larry Ludzak’s logging truck. Lia says, “Wisconsin was probably the most stressful. When we went to get the license, they wouldn’t accept George’s birth certificate. They would accept a passport, but that was at home. We texted a friend back home to break into our house, get the passport out of the safe, and have a notarized copy faxed to the clerk. The stress of that day really got to me, and I ended up sobbing all over the waiting room. But then something really cool happened. While we sat there waiting for the friend to text back at each step of the way, people from other offices in the building came out to chat and tell us their wedding stories. The kindness and distraction was everything I needed.” You might be wondering how they keep these excursions budget-friendly. Lia explains, “We keep the weddings affordable by not usually having many guests, not going all out on flowers and photography, and rarely having a cake. Around half of the weddings have been courthouse elopements, so there was little expense. When we’ve had friends, the reception is typically just dinner after. In Texas we had sausages at a beer garden. In New Orleans, we had Po Boys from a favorite local deli.” The trips double as the couple’s annual vacation, too, which keeps costs in check. Lia and George like to draw on and incorporate some of the great things about each state into each wedding, if possible. How did they do that for their Wisconsin wedding? Lia says, “So in this case, my friend Heather really ran with the idea. We had a Packers tailgate theme wedding and reception. Vows included many references to team loyalty and

a prayer for the Packers. We laughed pretty hard throughout. The reception was tailgate fare with burgers and brats as well as some Bucky block cheese. Krista, our officiant, wore her cheesehead hat to make it authentically Wisco. There was also a Lomabardi Trophy replica.”

#12 in Deadwood, S D. 2008. The photographer brought our wedding clothes and I could not believe how perfectly the dress fit!

#20 in Key West Florida, 2016.It was so hot on that beach, the photographer's makeup was running down her face.

Despite the extra planning and budgeting, Lia and George find some definite benefits to getting married again each year in a new location. “The effect on our marriage is that we are always newlyweds!” Lia says. “But truly, thinking about our vows every year helps us remember the importance of those promises and renews our commitment. We still have our challenges like any couple, but the weddings definitely keep it fresh.” Usually, they have allowed the officiant to choose the vows. “Krista’s football-themed ones were really funny,” Lia laughs, “and our officiant in Florida based the ceremony on The Princess Bride movie, which also had us laughing. In Texas, for our train ride wedding, we wrote vows based on the “Golden Spike” ceremony when east and west railroads were joined.” How does the couple choose which state to get married in next? “We get inspiration for trips we would want to take any way, like Hawaii was easy,” Lia explaines. “We also like to go where we have friends. We’re thinking about Tennessee for 2018. My brother’s wife is from there, and she speaks highly of the beauty of the eastern hill country. This year’s wedding was in Alaska. It was our 20th anniversary, so we wanted to go to a big state. My cousin officiated, as she lives in Fairbanks. We had the actual wedding in Fairbanks at a wildlife preserve, but we had to take some photos at a glacier. Since the wedding will always be in July, it was our only opportunity to have a winter-style wedding. Sometimes, if we don’t have an idea, we ask for suggestions. I think we may need help to get inspired to go to Iowa or Nebraska. Most years we don’t even know where we’re going next until about six months in advance. This state-visiting wedding scheme has its own challenges, especially when it comes to what to wear. “Wedding dress shopping is fun but can get very expensive,” Lia notes. “So I’ve gotten creative. I’ve borrowed some years, and sometimes I buy from Etsy or Craigslist. George really enjoys putting together his outfits too. For New Orleans, he took his suit from our San Diego wedding and had it made into shorts.”

# 17, Erie, PA in my sister and brother in law's back yard. My grand niece was the first flower girl we'd ever had at any of our weddings.

Despite the challenges, the couple looks forward to completing their plan to get married in every state. “Since we only get married on our anniversary, we’re going to be pretty old when we get to the 50th state!” Lia laughs.

Weddings at White’s Wildwood Retreat Are Truly

Destination Weddings

D

reaming of a wonderful outdoor wedding? White’s Wildwood Retreat, in the town of Lafayette between Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls, has an abundance of beautiful nature—bluffs, forest, and orchards—with a natural outdoor amphitheater and a large pavilion. The picturesque setting is a gorgeous venue for your wedding, providing unlimited backdrops for photographs. White’s Wildwood Retreat did not start off as a wedding venue. “The property that we developed for hobbyists, corporate retreats, family vacations, and holiday gettogethers had so much appeal that we started getting asked if we would host weddings,” explains Betty White. Betty and her husband Dean have been hosting weddings at their retreat for over ten years.

Weddings at White’s Wildwood Retreat are truly destination weddings. Your wedding rental begins on Friday morning and ends at 1:00 pm on Sunday. You don’t have to hurry or rush around, as you have time to decorate and set up at leisure. You can host up to thirtythree overnight guests for the weekend. Those guests may be your wedding party, out of town family, or close friends. Typically, if your wedding ceremony is at White’s Wildwood Retreat, your rehearsal and rehearsal dinner will be on site as well. The lawns and gardens are beautifully landscaped for play, leisure, or maybe even yard games.

The weddings here range from 40 to 400 guests. Their wedding venue includes all the amenities of Wildwood Lodge, Wildwood Cabin, Wildwood Pavilion, the outside venue, pavilion restrooms,

and special event parking. In 2015, they built a beautiful 48x90-feet pavilion that accommodates up to 400+ guests. In 2016, they built beautiful restrooms to serve pavilion guests. There are side curtains on all twenty-six openings of the pavilion walls, and the pavilion has an incredible sound system with a wireless mic. Nine banks of LED lights on dimmers allow you to set the desired mood with customized lighting throughout the event. The bar was custom-made for guests to use as well. “We have an open catering policy, which means you are welcome to work with a caterer of your choice. I have compiled a list of past caterers that you’re welcome to consult with as well,” says Betty White. White’s offers the bride and groom the opportunity for their wedding to become an event, not just a day, in a beautiful, natural setting. If this sounds good to you, drive out and visit, the Whites suggest. And then, book as soon as possible. “One year in advance is best, but some bookings are taking place two years in advance now,” the Whites report. Betty says, “I would love the opportunity to give you a tour!”

So You Want an Outdoor Wedding?

umbrellas are also a good idea. You’ll need to get from your “ready” room to the location, car, etc. You can also have the ceremony at the reception location. At Beaver Creek Reserve, the Main Lodge could easily accommodate the ceremony and the reception if needed.

by Brianne Markin, Marketing & Development Coordinator, Beaver Creek Reserve, and Outdoor Ceremony Survivor

3) Logistics, Logistics, Logistics. There are a few key considerations if you want an outdoor wedding.

F

3a. Travel and lodging options. If the ceremony and reception are in different locations, how will guests get from one location to the other? It is a good idea to provide plenty of directions and maps. Make sure you allow plenty of time for guests to travel, park, and walk to the ceremony location and again to go from the ceremony to the reception (if in different locations). Besides the beauty and the reasonable price tag, this is Beaver Creek Reserve’s strongest feature for any wedding. With the Main Lodge, open ceremony location, and onsite cabins, everything is all in one area.

or many in the Chippewa Valley, Beaver Creek Reserve (BCR) was one of their first camp or nature center experiences. And while camps, school field trips, and general visitors do make up the majority of our guests, many people are surprised that we rent our camp for weddings. So what do you need to know or think about before planning a wedding at BCR or an outdoor wedding in general? 1) The Dates. This is as much about the availability of a venue as it is about the other factors that go with the season. In summer, it can be very hot. Make sure to have provisions for shade, extra water, sunscreen, and even bug spray. If you need it for a day at the beach, your guests will need it at your wedding. At Beaver Creek Reserve, much of the summer is unavailable for weddings because we cater to many camps that book more than a year or two in advance. However, spring, fall, and winter are usually open. Pro tip: Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends are not usually booked in advance at Beaver Creek Reserve. 2) The Back-Up Plan. Speaking from personal experience, no matter how much planning, pleading, or praying is involved, there is always a chance it could rain (or snow or some other weather-related disaster). If you are planning to have any part of your wedding outside, it is essential to have a back-up plan for rain. A tent is a great option. Extra

3b. The food. If the actual reception will be outdoors, you’ll need a tent. It will keep the bugs at bay, as well as provide shelter. Not all caterers will be able to service a fully outdoor wedding. They need to keep food hot and/or cold, need access to water and power, etc. Food trucks can be a good option in this instance. Again, Beaver Creek has you covered. The Main Lodge has a fully stocked, professional kitchen. You can bring in any caterer, or even have friends and family help prepare a meal. Pro tip: Consider renting plates and glassware. Our facilities are used mostly by camps, and our plates, glasses, and silverware are very basic. Sure there are a lot of things to consider, and possible challenges to pulling off the perfect outdoor wedding. But in the end, the memories and the photos are worth it!

Instead of Gifts: Try a Travel Registry by Higgins Travel of Eau Claire

T

raditional wedding gifts are nice. A bottle of wine. A toaster. Bath towels. But what if you would really like to go on a splendid honeymoon but you can’t afford much of a trip? Higgins Travel Leaders, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, recommends you set up a travel registry. Higgins Travel Leaders has been offering travel registries for about five years. If you agree to eventually book your honeymoon through Higgins Travel Leaders, there is no fee to set up the registry. You can come into the office and chat with an agent, or you can communicate with the office through a phone call or an email. The registry can easily be set up on the Higgins Travel Leaders website. Travel Agent Heidi DesJarlais explains how the registry works. “We put the couple’s picture and write-up on our website, and guests contact us via the online request form. We don’t like to have people submit their payment information online, so we typically discuss that over the phone. If requested, we can print off inserts that the couple can put in their wedding invitations. Those are complimentary as well.” The couple can customize the registry to some extent. “Couples can either simply take monetary donations OR they can have a ‘wish list’ of things like a romantic dinner on the beach, parasailing,

ziplining, etc.,” DesJarlais says. “Also, some couples encourage guests to donate to their registry in lieu of shower gifts.” DesJarlais reports that the registry idea is very popular, as most couples already have been living together and don’t need household goods but they’d really love to have a nice honeymoon. “It’s also a fun way to give and receive money as a gift,” she says. Usually the money given toward the trip only covers about 5 percent of the costs. But most couples offer the registry as one way guests can gift them, while also accepting traditional gifts. One challenge with the travel registry is that guests tend to wait until the last minute to contribute to the registry (like, the day before the wedding). DesJarlais notes, “Typically, final payment on a travel package is due thirty to forty-five days prior to departure. If a couple is traveling RIGHT after their wedding, they won’t yet have the registry money to apply to their travel package, so they have to pay the full amount on their own. Fortunately, we simply give the money to the couple, and they can do whatever they want with it, whether it’s applying it to a credit card balance, spending money on the trip, or paying their rent!” What tips does she have for couples considering a registry? “DO IT! It’s free and fun!”

Vintage Engagement Rings Make History—Again! By Teva Dekel, ring designer at Williams Diamond Center

What’s Trending in Rings?

Choosing a ring is a major decision—you’ll be wearing it for years! You want a ring that expresses your personality, and a newer cut or a ring made from a vintage style can do just that. What’s trending this year? Here are a few from Brides: • Unique halos: the row of gemstones around your central stone is one way to make your ring stand out. Halos could be from intricate, vintageinspired designs or newer takes. Actor Olivia Wilde’s engagement ring features a round diamond with an emerald halo. • Colored accents: instead of last year’s single colored stone, 2017 brings colored accent stones, for example, an emerald and a diamond or a halo of pink diamonds. • Edwardian rings: the distinctive charm of this time can be yours with either a handmade antique or vintage-inspired-design ring. John Krasinski proposed to Emily Blunt in 2008 with a stunning Edwardianinspired ring. • Black diamonds: their edgier look is popular with non-traditional brides, and they represent certainty and passion. • Vintage or vintage-inspired rings: whether a family heirloom or a newly designed ring made with vintage design in mind, these rings are in again.

Vintage Rings through the Decades

Edwardian (Early Twentieth Century) Back in the early 1900s, the practice of a bride-to-be receiving an engagement ring became a more common practice. This was in part due to more people being able to afford it, with more people now living in the middle class as a result of the industrial revolution. The gemstone of choice for Edwardian engagement rings was diamonds, set in ornate, lacy, feminine platinum settings still under much of the influence of the romantic art nouveau period. Roaring Twenties When World War I began in 1914, hard times brought on by the war also marked the end of the fashions and trends of the Edwardian era. Women found more independence as men went to war. American women won the right to vote in 1920, which lead to the furthering of their own independence and liberation. When the war ended, the “Roaring 20’s” piloted a new attitude and an overall desire to live life to the absolute fullest—engagement rings did not escape this bright new philosophy. Rings were less feminine, more

geometric, elongated, reflecting a love for modernism. This is a period of multi-diamond, multi-stone designs that stretch across the finger in glittering bursts of sparkle and color. The main gemstone remained diamond but was often accented by other stones such as sapphires, rubies, and emeralds—all set in white gold or platinum settings. Scarlett Johansson’s engagement ring is in an Art Deco style with three rose-cut diamonds,an attitude that was very much reflected in the new jewelry design trends. In Times of War As World War II ended the glitz and glamour of the Deco period, you would think that the rationing and hardship of another world war would bring the engagement ring to a very modest place. That did not happen. The engagement rings of this period were often large and bold. Feminine curves were back for clothing, fashion, and jewelry. This was a very Dior “new look” revolution. Exaggerated ribbons, bows, and flowers were gilded and heavy. Platinum being scarce due to the war effort, most rings used yellow and rose gold. Those with a smaller budget chose tinier diamond settings flanked by synthetic rubies and sapphires. In 1948, DeBeers started to campaign with their ever famous slogan “Diamonds Are Forever,” solidifying diamond as the prominent stone used in engagement rings. The trends of 1950s jewelry were similar to that of the 1940s, but they were often executed differently. Designs were now more light and filigreed, as opposed to the solid, high polished look of the 1940s. Engraved finishes and braided rope accents harking back to the romance of the Edwardian period were popular design elements. Platinum once again became the metal of choice used for diamond jewelry. This was a return to “traditionalism.” From Flower Children to Kennedys While hippies in the 1960s may have simply made a ring out of flowers, many brides were very much inspired by the exploding forces of celebrity culture–the large glamorous rings of Elizabeth Taylor and the emerald and diamond ring of first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. This period also saw a shift toward different or fancy shaped diamonds—the rise of the emerald, pear, marquise, and even heart cuts became all the rage. Brides were looking for a traditional-nontraditional way to differentiate themselves from their mothers and grandmothers. Disco Beat The 1970s had a return to bright sparkling and flashy gold–Studio 54 disco beats seemed to find their way on the rings of many brides. Multitone rings with fancy and round shapes creating clusters of sparkling disco balls were popular. Like a Princess The 1980s saw the continuation of fancy shaped centers and gold start to fade out a bit as the round, brilliant cut diamonds returned to center stage, often flanked by baguette cut diamonds in white gold (the classic Tiffany engagement ring). In the 1980s the storybook engagement and wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles set off a trend of sapphirecentered engagement rings, after Diana’s oval sapphire ring. When

Prince William proposed to Catherine Middleton in the autumn of 2010, he gave her the ring. Minimalist Look The 1990s saw the creation of the three-stone ring and the rise of the princess cut (square shaped) diamond all set in white gold. Very classic and straightforward, not a lot of scrollwork or design. This was a minimal period of design and the solitaire continues to reign. The Millennium: Looking forward and Starting to Look Back The minimal straightforward design continued to march forward in the early 2000s with the start of tiny diamond accents finding their way down the shoulders of the rings and matching wedding bands in white gold. The round brilliant remains number 1, with the princess cut diamond remaining number 2 in popularity. 2010 and beyond–Meet the Halo Tiny sparkling diamonds are surrounding all shapes of center diamonds and sometimes twice and three times over! The halo isn’t new— it’s been a classic since easily the eighteenth century, think of Marie Antoinette and George the III. What has changed is the way technology and industry have allowed for the mining and cutting of tiny or melee diamonds. This in itself has transformed the jewelry industry forever. Designers can now use melee diamond accents in a way that has not been seen before, up and down crowns, on upper galleries, peek-aboos, micro pave, delicate scrollwork and much more! Cushion cuts and ovals sparkle as brightly as the round brilliant, and diamonds are not the only center anymore. Meet morganite, aquamarine, sapphire, amethyst, and any color you can imagine. The period of ultimate individualism and personal aesthetics has arrived. White gold, yellow gold, rose gold, platinum are now all in vogue! Hammered, engraved, solid, filigree, minimalist, two-tone and tri-tone are now every day, and individuals look only to themselves for guidance.

Why the Surge in Popularity for Vintage Rings?

In our ever-changing fast-paced world there is something many brides are choosing—vintage or antique rings or inspired by vintage rings— because they’re charming and unique. But to have the best of both worlds—an antique ring and a new ring—Teva, the designer at Williams Diamond Center, would love to help craft you a new ring by helping you repurpose a vintage ring and or use design trends and styles from your favorite period to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind new ring. This process of creating and designing from old or vintage styles in a new ring is what 2017+ is all about. Williams Diamond Center also buys and sells estate jewelry, so often there are incredible vintage rings available that are unique and gorgeous at fantastic price points. "I honestly have nothing but wonderful things to say about Angie and the Barn on Stoney Hill. Working with Angie was absolutely perfect! The stress of getting married and pulling off a big party is a lot to do, but Angie and her spouse made everything so easy. She gets to know the bride and groom on a very personal level, at least she did with Nate and I, which made working with her very memorable. She knew our style, she knew what we were imagining and took a lot of the stress off our shoulders so we could focus on the experience and the people around us. The Barn on Stoney Hill was absolutely gorgeous, it was like exactly what we were hoping for and much much more! I've continued to stay in contact with Angie, she and I are very fond of each other and I know her business will only continue to grow! Nate and I are very blessed to have had the chance to meet Angie and to have our dream wedding held at her beautiful home and venue!" - Sonja Hasz

RightWay Shuttle: No Transportation Worries on Your Big Day

R

ight Way Shuttle in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has been in business for thirteen years. President and owner Tom Klatt says, “The business started to provide late night transportation service to area university and college students. But we decided to make a change and went into transportation for weddings and bachelor parties, and we kept growing and changing. My philosophy is to always change. What we do today might be totally wrong for tomorrow’s needs,” says Klatt. For several years it has been popular for couples getting married to hire a limousine to provide transportation for the wedding party. Klatt says now, though, the limo business is changing in response to couples wanting something different than just limos. Another big change is that rather than the main focus being transportation for the wedding party, the aspect of providing transportation for wedding guests from hotel to venue has grown to be a big part of what they do. Klatt explains why: “In this day and age, weddings are often held at barns and wineries and golf courses. The traditional idea of having the reception at a banquet hall is now often the last option. And that has created more of a need for guests to get from where they’re staying to where the wedding and reception are being held and back to the hotel again. Lots of these venues are very rural, you don’t know where you’re going , you don’t want to be late, it’s dark, it’s foggy. Right Way Shuttle had taken care of all that for our customers. Our drivers are professional. They know where they’re going. They literally take care of all the details.”

Couples often underestimate the cost of transportation and then don’t budget enough for it. Klatt says, “It shouldn’t be your last consideration. It should be one of your priorities. Especially if the majority of your guests are not from the area and aren’t familiar with the location.” Planning in advance to have reliable, experienced transportation arranged and then allocating an adequate portion of your wedding budget to that will insure that you—and your guests—don’t need to worry at all about transportation, and everyone can fully enjoy the best day possible.

Eau Claire’s Diamond We also offer site in the Rough! offCatering

Another reason to provide transportation for your guests is that because many of your guests will drink at the reception, you will want them to be safe and not drive if they’ve been drinking. If wedding transportation is something new to you or you’re thinking of providing guest transportation, call Right Way. Klatt suggests that as soon as you have reserved your reception venue, your next step is to secure your wedding transportation. And to do that, couples should call Laura in the office to discuss the particular needs of your day, such as how many guests you expect, location of the ceremony and the reception, how many trips back and forth between venue and hotel are best, ages and needs of the guests, and sizes and types of vehicles available and which ones would be most appropriate for your day. Right Way can also advise you on which hotels to book to coordinate well with the transportation service to keep cost reasonable.
