o man in this world attains freedom from any slavery except by entrance into some higher servitude. There is no such thing as an entirely free man. If there were one such being, he would be lost in this great universe, all strung through as it is with obligations. It is not whether you are free or a servant but whose servant you are; this is the question. It is not by striking off all allegiances, but by finding your true Lord and serving him with a complete submission, that you can escape from slavery. —Phillips Brooks

Risking Love o love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. Love comes to those who still hope even though they’ve been disappointed, to those who still believe even though they’ve been betrayed, to those who still love even though they’ve been hurt before. —Author unknown

DESCENDANTS OF FORMER SLAVES, THE BLACK HISTORY Sons and Daughters of my Flock, e must not forget to keep the Black History alive. Tell our children how we, an ethnic group of the human race, made it thus far by God’s amazing grace, our love and unity. The salutation given by God through Paul to the Colossian said, “Remember my chains; grace be with you” (Colossians 4:18). Former slaves, who arrived in this country in chains against their will, must be remembered and we should celebrate the victory of freedom God made possible. We must make it our ambition to never forget the dark days of slavery or the delivering hand of God from the suffering of slavery. Are we honoring the sacrifice of our forbearers? Are we ever giving thanks to God for His deliverance? During this month-long Annual Celebration of “Black History”, we should aim at learning something we did not know about the history of ethnic people of color in these United States of America. Let your learned knowledge encourage you to make positive decisions and progress, thus showing gratitude to the Good Lord for His demonstrated love and care for this ethnic people. I want the saints of my flock to apply a duality in our celebration and quest. We must reflect on where we are, where we need to go, and what we need to be doing to reach our ultimate goal; thereby, honoring the suffering of our forebears as a people of African descent. Since the “Black Revolution” of the 1960’s, descendants of former slaves have attempted to integrate society. Beginning in the southern states, and spreading across this nation, we were met with strong resistance from the ethnic ruling class of people. Often we are crippled by low self-esteem, eroding spirituality, teetering on the edge of moral collapse and a loss of spiritual, personal, and family moral values. We tend to recycle self-hatred, lack of honor and respect for human life, physical destruction of our mind and body, and depletion of self-worth, esteem, and assurance of the Lord’s power. We must aim at positive change within ourselves and believing that God will bring about a change in others. The biblical record is clear; as an ethnic group with strong creative genes, religious, social, and Christian roots we still find ourselves in a mental, deplorable situation by our own choice as we co-exist among other ethnic groups in this country. But we can overcome by trusting our Christ. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully

Blast From The Past
Louise Shropshire
By Mercedese Hervey
February 15, 1913 to 1993
he was the granddaughter of slaves and between 1932 and 1942 originally wrote:
“If my Jesus wills, I do believe, I will overcome someday”. However, in 1963 before the March on Washington, D.C., The Rev., Martin Luther King, Jr. stayed overnight in Cincinnati, Ohio at Shropshire’s home, accompanied by three FBI agents for security. After dinner Louise played the piano and sang songs for Dr. King. Gamboa wrote King asked her permission to change the words from “I’ll overcome” to “We’ll overcome” for the Movement and she stated “I don’t Mind”. After years of extensive research “We Shall Overcome”, the inspirational anthem sung at the 1963 March on Washington, D.C. has been attributed to hymn writer Louise Shropshire. This song has been sung around the world by people seeking faith and courage to deal with the injustices of life. A 2012 book named “We Shall Overcome: Sacred Song on the Devil’s Tongue” by Isaias Gamboa, a Grammy- award winning music producer. He learned of the name of the true writer from his friend and musical colleague, Robert Goins Shropshire, the grandson of Louise Shropshire. Resource “The Cincinnati Enquirer”, August 28, 2013, by David Holthaus. Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia: Louise Shropshire

Footprints from the desert… Psalms 100: 1-2—Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing,
erve the Lord with gladness. What? I need to be happy while I serve the Lord? While I’m spending my time and money going up to that church to deal with those people? YES!!!! Sending you love from the desert… When I keep in mind that the service I do is not for me or about me; but to edify the Father’s Kingdom; I can see a little clearer and approach it differently. Sometimes we just get caught up in I, me & mine; when the true focus should be we, us & others. When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. committed himself to the fight, it was not only for African Americans, but for all who were oppressed and lived with injustice. “Injustice anywhere is the threat of injustice everywhere”. God says that we are His children and the sheep of His pasture. If God’s children do not labor for His purpose, who will? Make good use of your freedom!

Reaching Out With Open Hands Leading Lost Souls to Christ econd Baptist Church Inc. (SBC) under the direction of Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard is reaching out in the community with open hands, leading lost souls to Christ. SBC is located in the Foothills of San Gabriel Valley, in the beautiful city of Monrovia California where Bishop Dillard has been the Parish Under-shepherd/ Soul-watcher for over forty years. SBC currently has four Elders who sit under the watchful eye of Bishop Dillard. As Elders, Bishop Dillard has assigned each of us duties to carry out around the church campus. Also, we still have our own Christian obligations of going out, into the community to help spread the good news about Jesus Christ. Elder James Walker is the Director of the Evangelistic Ministry. Elder Robert Craig gives leadership to the Bishop’s Care Ministry. Elder Jason Jenkins leads the Youth Christian Evangelistic Ministry and serves as President over the Teens In Progress (TIP) Ministry. I am Elder Barakat Saleem and I serve as Co-Director for the Evangelistic Ministry. Three years ago, God placed it on my heart to take my ministry back into the same streets that He had delivered me out of nearly eight years ago. But, due to the fear that I had of stepping out of my own comfort zone here at SBC, I kept putting off what God told me to do. You see, sometimes because of fear, many of us will make up all kinds of excuses to keep from doing what God called upon us to do. However, in order for us to become those faithful followers that God wants us to be, we must first remember that fear does not come from God, but rather fear comes from the devil. II Timothy 1:7 states, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”. Therefore we cannot allow fear to hold us back, as hostages when God calls upon us to go out and witness to others. If it means stepping out of our comfort zone, we must still be willing to go where God sends us. In fact, Jesus commands us in Matthew 28:18-20, to go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always even to the ends of age, Amen. So what is God telling us today? God is simply saying to us that we do not have to be afraid of anything, because greater is He who lives in us than he who lives in the world. God wants us to know that no matter where He sends us that He is with us and that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore don’t allow fear to keep you from taking your ministry back out into the world where the people are in most desperate need of hearing, in spite of our sins, God still loves us. Romans 5:8 states, “God demonstrated His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. God loves us so much that He allowed His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ who committed no sin, to take the sins of the whole world upon Himself, so that you and I will have a chance to live forever. What an awesome God we serve! He is so faithful to us. I believe that He is looking for a few of His faithful followers to go back out into this dying world and witness to others about what He has done through His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. Bishop Dr. William LaRue Dillard and everyone here at SBC are very committed to leading lost souls to Christ, one soul at a time. Therefore please join in with us under the direction of our Bishop in a strong effort of reaching out throughout our communities with open hands leading lost souls to Christ?

Second Baptist ndraé Edward Crouch Church (July 1, 1942 –Members January 8, 2015) was an American gospel singer, songwriter, arranger, record producer and pastor. Referred to as "the father of modern gospel music" by contemporary Christian and gospel music professionals,[1] Crouch was known for his compositions "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power", "My Tribute (To God Be the Glory)" and "Soon and Very Soon". In secular music, he was known for his collaborative work during the 1980s with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Quincy Jones as well as conducting choirs that sang on the Michael Jackson hit "Man in the Mirror" and Madonna's "Like a Prayer".[2] Crouch was noted for his talent of incorporating contemporary secular music styles into the gospel music he grew up with. His efforts in this area were what helped in paving the way for early American contemporary Christian music during the 1960s and 1970s. [3] Crouch's original music arrangements were heard in the films The Color Purple and Disney's The Lion King, as well as the NBC television series Amen. Awards received by him include seven Grammy Awards, being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1998, and receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004. Did you know the word “Love” shows up 310 times in the Bible?
English: God is Love and Love Conquers ALL! Spanish: Dios es amor y el amor lo conquista todo!
od is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe--the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and Eminor--loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not...we all know something’s wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts--it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

AFRICAN AMERICAN SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS IN HEALTH CARE s people, we are all consumers of health care at one time or another. And we know there are medical conditions that are prevalent in the African American population such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, in juries, kidney disease according to the Center of Disease Control 2012 polls. Some would believe that we are only consumers of health care. As African Americans, we are also inventors. In fact, many modern conveniences and necessities are directly related to, or derivative of, the inventions of black inventors: blood banks, the refrigerator, the electric trolley, the dust pan, comb, mop, brush, clothes dryer, refrigerator, lawn mower, traffic signals, the pen and the pencil sharpener. But did you know that we have also contributed to the scientific progress in health care? From colonial times through today, Americans of African and Caribbean descent have contributed to the advancement of medicine, physics, and industrialization. To name a few: Keith L. Black (born September 13, 1957) is an African American neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of brain tumors and a prolific campaigner for funding of cancer treatment. He is chairman of the neurosurgery department and director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Percy Lavon Julian was an African American research chemist and a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants. His work would lay the foundation for the steroid drug industry's production of cortisone, other corticosteroids and birth control pills. Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson Sr. (born September 18, 1951) is an African American author and retired neurosurgeon. He is the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head. Alice Augusta Ball (July 24, 1892 – December 31, 1916) was an African American chemist who developed an injectable oil extract that was the most effective treatment of leprosy until the 1940. She was also the first woman and first African American to graduate from the university of Hawaii with a master's degree. George Edward Alcorn, Jr. (born March 22, 1940) is an African American physicist and inventor who invented a method of fabricating an imaging x-Ray spectrometer. Patricia Era Bath (born November 4, 1942, Harlem Manhattan, NY) is an African American ophthalmologist, inventor and academic. Bath is the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose. Her Laserphaco Probe is used to treat cataracts. So this month as we focus on Black History, remember African Americans are people who not only seek health care as consumers, but we are also scientific pioneers and major contributors to the health industry.

Diakona Ellis and Thelma Johnson
For better or worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part! he longest ‘married couple’ celebrated 81 years in November 2013, are to be commended for such oneness, however, at SBC we have a couple in our midst to be in awe about. This month’s spot light is on a husband and wife that have held firm to their vows for over 54 years. Diakona Ellis and Thelma Johnson have been attending Second Baptist Church for over 40 years (this February 2015). If you see one, you usually see the other not far behind on any given Sunday. They are approaching their 54th wedding anniversary on August 14th, 2015 (the 14th is also Diakona Thelma Birthday) and having followed the commandment to be fruitful and multiple, they have three children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Diakona Ellis and Thelma Johnson have lived lives worthy of taking notes for those newlyweds and seasoned marriages seeking wise marriage counsel. Both are college and bible scholars. Diakona Ellis attended Pasadena City College and Diakona Thelma attended Jackson State College. Avid readers and followers of the Bible, these two scholars have received teaching awards for their dedication to In-Home Bible Study groups and their work in the church. Diakona Ellis is the 2001 SBC Laymen of the Year Recipient and Diakona Thelma has a Certificate of Appreciation from Meals-On-Wheels, Monrovia, CA for her volunteer services. When asked separately, what their proudest accomplishments were, they both spoke of their marriage to each other (true soul-mates). In addition, they spoke of receiving Salvation and the birth of their three children. They can also be found visiting the sick and shut-in, working with youth and simply just talking with people, an act slowly becoming extinct.
Next time you see these lovebirds on the campus, stop and chat with them, two of the most pleasant, warm and kind followers of Christ. Should you need prayer and your last name begin with I-J, they are the Diakona assigned to take that call.
