Mission Statement Second’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

Honoring the Dishonorable! People of Faith, Grace to You!
O
n this significant day hailed in the Holy Bible as a Divine Blessing upon children, we revisit and are highlighted in its promise. We are told to honor your father and your mother in the Decalogue. “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12 NKJV).
In a culture that honors youth, the Bible says, “Honor your father and your mother.” Does this make sense? Isn’t honor something we seek for ourselves? So what’s all this about giving it to others? Our culture has zero tolerance for aging like we use to have. Today’s society has produced a cult of perpetual youths, resulting in a frenzy to appear young. Devoutly honoring the superficiality of appearance, we look with longing toward youth, and with loathing toward age and maturity. We desperately do not want to grow up and give up childish ways (I Corinthians 13:11b). So rather than showing the aged honor, we despise them. My focus is on “HONORING THE DISHONORABLE.” I see intractable lovers of self in our society. We find honoring others too difficult. Actually, we find it impossible. So we cast about for a way out and many have good reasons. An anguished young man once asked me, “Bishop, how am I supposed to honor my father after what he has done to my mother?” It was a good question! I knew what this father had done. He had run off with another woman, leaving his pregnant wife to pick up the pieces of the domestic disaster created by his profound dishonorable behavior. Nevertheless, God tells this young man to honor his father. Only hearts that have been brought to God in Christ Jesus can truly honor a father and a mother; even parents who have acted dishonorable. Just as “children obey your parents” does not include obeying their sinful commands, so honoring your father does not include honoring his dishonorable behavior. Jesus honoring His Father’s will prayed, “O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39b). Forsaken on the cross, the Son perfectly obeyed and honored His Father though it cost Him everything. We can grow in grace of honoring our earthly parents for the still greater honor of our heavenly Father. Amen. Until He Comes, I am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. id you know there are four Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments? Wimbledon is the oldest (1877), Australian Open, French Open and U.S. Open.
July 6, 1957, Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was the first African-American Athlete to win Wimbledon, tennis’ most prestigious award. Although Althea won major tennis tournaments she still had another foe to defeat named segregation. She was denied rooms at hotels and was even refused a reservation for a luncheon in her honor. Billie Jean King, winner of 12 Grand Slam titles said “If it hadn’t been for her ( Althea), it wouldn’t been so easy for Arthur (Ashe) or the ones who followed.” Althea paved the way for the powerful and dynamic Williams Sisters to play international tennis: Venus has won seven Grand Slam titles, while Serena has won twenty Grand Slam singles titles. Serena Williams is representing the United States of America at the 2015 Wimbledon.

od wants to direct you in life, but two things need to line up: You have to ask the right person, God, and you have to ask with the right attitude — in faith, expecting an answer.
Have you ever asked God for something and didn’t expect to get it? That’s why you didn’t get it. God works in our lives according to faith. So many times we say, “God, please guide me!” and we walk away not even waiting for guidance. We just immediately start to work. We say, “God, I want you to give me wisdom; help me make the right decision.” But we really don’t expect him to do that. We think it all depends on us. God has promised to give us wisdom, if we ask. Wisdom is seeing life’s guidance from God’s point of view. Wisdom is the ability to make decisions the way God makes decisions. Think about this! God never makes a bad decision. He never makes a mistake. He says if we trust him and listen to him, He will guide us. But we must ask in faith (Purpose Driven Life, January 7, 2013). I think this message is an excellent reminder…

Medication Safety
D
o you take a long list of drugs to manage serious health problems? Or do you simply reach for an over-thecounter medication from time to time? Either way, there is a lot you can do to make sure you get the best benefit from the medication and stay safe in the process. These medication safety tips are a good place to start. 1. Never take medication intended for someone else, including inhalants. Taking someone else's medication can be extremely dangerous, even deadly. You should never take medication that is not prescribed for you, or give your medication to someone else. Your medication is prescribed specifically for you. The type and dose is based on your personal health needs. 2. Get into the habit of checking the expiration dates and throw away medications that have expired. Expired medications can lose its effectiveness. Be sure to dispose of unused and discontinued medications properly. 3. Never combine multiple medications in one bottle. Although you may think you will remember which pill is which, anyone can make a mistake that could lead to a dangerous medication error. 4. Read medications labels carefully, with each dose. Taking medications from unmarked containers or bottles can cause you to pop the wrong pill in error. It is never a good practice to relay on your memory when it comes to taking medications. 5. Consult with a doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Your doctor or pharmacist will be happy to assist you in understanding what medication is used for. Make sure that your doctors know about all your medications. Also let your doctors know about any over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements, or herbs used. Use the same pharmacy to fill all your prescriptions so they can help you keep track of everything you are taking. Do not break, crush or chew tablets without first consulting with a health professional on how medications should be taken. 6. Don't stop taking your medications just because you feel better unless advised by your doctor to do so. This oc curs frequently when an antibiotic is prescribed. Finish the prescription without missing any dose; and don't stop taking it because you want to save some of the medication for a future illness. Talk to your doctor about side effects before discontinuing medications due to side effects 7.

Happy Mother’s Day!
O
n May 2, 2015, Mission of Mercy Ministry (M.O.M.) celebrated the 7 nd Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon. The theme, “A Royal-Tea,” was based on the scripture Galatians 4:7, “So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir” (NIV).
Our Moderators were Jamorra Robinson, Justice Johnson, and Typhanie Robinson who had wonderful skits that were in conjunction with the theme and reminded us of the importance of mothers. We were also blessed by the talents of our youth dancers, and the touching poems read by dedicated members of our church. Mission of Mercy Member, Betty Thomas, gave a heart-felt dedication to Second Baptist’s Council of Mothers. All SBC Council Mothers received a glass teapot filled with beautiful fresh flowers from MOM. After the delicious lunch, Diakona Jessie Anderson gave a stirring message from the theme titled, “Daughters, You are Royalty, Heirs of God.” All in all, it was a beautiful day, enjoyed by all. M.O.M. is so thankful to all who donated their time and talents to ensure this was a great day.

y tradition, Pre-School through Post College undergrads were honored on June 14th at Second Baptist Church [see list]. Dr. John P. Harris, Jr. dressed for the occasion in his doctoral robe handing out Certificates of Achievement with Bishop Wm. La Rue Dillard’s signature and Kente cloth stoles that were donated. Each high school and college honoree received gift bags and a commemorative program booklet edited by Scholarship Commission Chairperson, Kathy Jackson.
Dr. Harris congratulates his twin sister Yulonn Harris as she received her Doctorate Degree.
Keyera Collins, 2015 recipient of the G.G. Bailey Memorial Scholarship, will have her name permanently added to SBC’s history. Other noteworthy recipients were Jordan Adkison, with the Wm. LaRue Dillard Continuing Education Scholarship that Jeremy Jenkins and Kimberly White were awarded. Joseph Smith Memorial scholarships were presented to Kayla Wilson, Andre Barajas, Omar Bugarin and Myron McAfee. The highlight of the worship was Bishop’s inspirational sermon that resulted in two persons giving their lives to Christ. Special thanks to the presenters Jorge Cabrera, Cattyna Craig and Jeremy Jenkins. Former scholarship recipients who are now gainfully employed, Ariel Tolfree - City of Monrovia Neighborhood Specialist and Darius Reese - Stanford University Athletic Trainer, were applauded for their success. We salute all of our graduates and compliment their parents for jobs well done. As Delores Sanders original song says. “So Glad You Made It” but remember Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. Father's Day Prayer Lord, please bless our fathers, these men who mean so much to us, who are greatly responsible for who we are and who we are becoming. Bless them for having the courage to do what's necessary to keep us out of trouble, for making us do the right thing, for helping us build our character, even when it makes us angry; and bless them for pushing us to do our best, even when they just want to love us. Bless our fathers for being our protectors, for leading us through stormy times to safety, for making us believe that everything will be all right and for making it so.
