Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.
Fit to be fruitful
I
am in Christ: created anew, made a branch of the Vine, fitted for fruit-bearing. Would … that believers would cease looking at their old nature and complaining of their weakness, as if God called them for what they were unfitted for! Would that they would believingly and joyfully accept the wondrous revelation of how God, in uniting them to Christ, has made himself chargeable for their spiritual growth and fruitfulness! How all sickly hesitancy and sloth would disappear, and under the influence of this motive — the faith in the faithfulness of him whom they are in Christ — their whole nature would rise to accept and fulfill their glorious destiny! —Andrew Murray, Abide in Christ

Christians Discerning and Armed for Battle!
Sons and Daughters of My Flock, Grace to You!
D
iscernment is one of the spiritual gifts recorded by the direction of the Holy Spirit, I Corinthians 1-2. We, the Saints of God are at war. You and I are involved in a deadly, daily battle with a formidable foe named Satan.
The greatest Counselor in the world, the Holy Spirit, is with us to help us be overcomers. His assignment is to be sure we claim Christ’s encouragement: “In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). God’s assurance, through the Apostle John: “You have overcome the wicked one” (I John 2:14). The Holy Spirit equips us for battle and is the strategist for daily victory. To prepare us to receive His help, we need to do some realistic thinking about spiritual warfare. Based on my theological background and experience in churchmanship, I can offer some biblical presuppositions to keep our thinking straight: 1. There is in this world an objective force of evil marshalling his forces against the people of God. 2. Satan’s evil forces especially target those who believe in Jesus Christ and have trusted Him as Lord and Savior. Satan wants to discourage, dissemble, confuse, put down, insinuate, and hurt us. His ultimate goal is to make us question that we belong to Christ and try to take away the assurance of our faith. Jesus Christ came into the world to defeat the power of evil and Satan. Jesus went to the cross and when He died on the cross, as His blood was shed, victory was won. Now, in the interface between the birth of the church and Jesus’ Second Coming in midair for His Saints, we live in a world influenced by Satan’s power. However, you and I have a Name that is greater than the force of evil and that is, the name of Jesus Christ. Through Him, you and I are overcomers! Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard

ohn Andrew Ross, Music Director of the National Center of Afro-American Artists and Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts, is in the process of reviving many of our African American religious songs, songs that coded slave spirituals, and songs that were sung by our ancestors’ of past generations. Vintage gospels, secretly coded songs used by slaves to escape in the Underground Railway, and classic hymns of longing and redemption, many of which became Anthems for the Civil Rights Movement. The Project includes such songs as: Rock-a-Mah Soul in the Bosom of Abraham Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho We’re Climbing Jacob’s ladder Ezekiel Saw the Wheel Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah, and Go Tell It on the Mountain Psalms 137, stanza 4, says, “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land? I pray that we will remember these vintage songs and pass them on to other generations so they will never forget and won’t have to ask the question of “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” Amen!

hat an awesome day it is to wake up and know that the Lord has watched over you all night long! Every morning I thank God for just that; He kept me once again! There are so many disturbing occurrences happening in the world today that Christians should really be watching and praying. Be observant of your surroundings and pray for anyone you see; like a person in a car stalled on the side of the road, or people pushing their carts who may or may not be homeless (we should not assume), especially about the people on the side of the road with signs. Many times all we can do is pray that the Lord will help their circumstances. There may even be a time when you are able to offer a financial token as the Holy Spirits leads us. We cannot save the world, but we can help someone who may need a friend to talk to. A positive friend help you laugh and forget about the burden you currently have. Believe me; God knows what we go through on a daily basis. “So let it go until tomorrow, your problem will still be there, if the Lord doe not take them away.” Psalms 139:2, “You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” In closing I would like to wish a Happy Birthday to Mrs. Betty Dillard!!! May God bless you so you can be a blessing… Happy July to all…
Peggy

eaven is For Real – Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn’t know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.
The rice represents daily activities that are “unspiritual”. If you put the rice in first, then try to fit the three walnuts in (which represent reading the Bible, praying, and serving one another), then everything won’t fit in the jar! But if you put the walnuts in first (put God first in your life)
Before all the rice (the daily activities)
Then everything fits in the jar!

hile the growing orphan care movement has been reduced to a focus on adoption, something few people can do, Johnny Carr shows readers how every Christian should play an active role in caring for orphans. Indeed, caring for the orphan requires us to care about related issues from child trafficking and HIV/AIDS to racism and poverty. Too often, we only discuss or theologize the issues, relegating the responsibility to governments. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something; Christians are clearly called to care for orphans, a group so close to the heart of Jesus. Second’s Gazette

I
A Belated Father’s Day Gift to “ALL” Men t’s July, the beginning of summer! I must apologize because I missed the opportunity to address an important issue for the month of June.
Each year in June, we celebrate Father's Day! So, I am exercising my right to use the procrastinator’s theory – it is better late than never. Now it is July - - - but I still want to share a gift to the men in ours lives which will keep them in good health! The first step is to help our men establish a good relationship with a primary care doctor. Just encouraging them to go to a doctor have a physical and discuss any health issues; and encourage our men to have the test to measure the level of PSA (prostate specific antigen) in the blood and/ordigital exam. Encourage men to participate in important screenings. Screenings can include:
Blood pressure level –to check for problems before they occur. It should be checked at least twice a year. Cholesterol-screening can begin at age of 35, but earlier if there is family history that includes heart disease, diabetes and/or obesity. Colon cancer-screening can start at age 50, but earlier screenings if there is history of colon cancer. Diabetes-screened for high blood sugar, especially if you have high blood pressure. Hepatitis C-recommended if you were born between 1945 and 1965, or if you used injected drugs or received a blood transfusion before 1992. HIV-if you are 65 or younger, get an HIV screening. Lung cancer-if you are between 55 and 80, has a history of smoking, or quit within the last 15 years. BMI-know your body mass index: a BMI of 18.5 to 25 indicates a normal weight; 30 or higher may mean you are overweight.
Start healthy habits for heart exercise. Something as simple as a brisk walk can help the heart. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week; just 30 minutes of exercising, five out of seven days, drops the risk of heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the U.S. Remember, to live healthy, you must live active. If you did not give a Father’s Day gift to that special man (and even if you did), it is never too late to pay attention to their health! Some suggestions include giving him a pedometer to count his steps during the day, buying him a pair of new running or walking shoes, and then go for a walk, go bowling, swimming, or hiking with him; visit a local or state park for a day of fun, and remember to use sunscreen during the sunny summer months and wear sunglasses with UV protection. Finally, make better food choices. So, whether the man in your life is your dad, brother, husband, son, uncle, or just a friend, consider better health as a gift that will keep on giving!
Live life healthy, Jessie M. Anderson, RN BSN

n February 4, 1968, exactly two months before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, he delivered his last sermon at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. In it, he described his preferences for his own funeral. He didn’t want people to mention his Nobel Peace Prize, his other awards or where he went to school; none of that was important, he said. Instead, he wanted his eulogist to say King “tried to give his life serving others” and “tried to love somebody.” In that sermon, King also said “everybody can serve,” regardless of background or educational level. The only requirements, he said, were “a heart full of grace” and “a soul generated by love.”
