Bishop’s Epistle: June 19, 2016 Christians Discerning and Armed for Battle! Sons and Daughters of my Flock, Grace to you! Discernment is one of the spiritual gifts recorded by the direction of the Holy Spirit in I Corinthians 1-2. We the saints of God are at war. You and I are involved in a deadly, daily battle with a formidable foe named Satan. The greatest Counselor in the world, the Holy Spirit, is with us to help us be overcomers. His assignment is to be sure we claim Christ’s encouragement: “In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John16:33); And God’s assurance through the apostle John: “You have overcome the wicked one.” (I John 2:14). The Holy Spirit equips us for battle and it is the strategist for daily victory. To prepare us to receive His help we need to do some realistic thinking about spiritual warfare. Based on my theological background and experience in churchmanship, I can offer some biblical presuppositions to keep our thinking straight: One:
There is in this world an objective force of evil marshalling his forces against the people of God.
Two:
Satan’s evil forces especially target those who believe in Jesus Christ and have trusted Him as Lord and Savior. Satan wants to discourage, dissemble, confuse, put down, insinuate, and hurt us. His ultimate goal is to make us question that we belong to Christ and try to take away the assurance of our faith. Jesus Christ came into the world to defeat the power of evil and Satan. Jesus went to the cross and when He died on the cross, as His blood was shed, victory was won.
Three:
Now, in the interface between the birth of the church and Jesus’ Second Coming in midair for His saints, we live in a world influenced by Satan’s power. However, you and I have a Name that is greater than the force of evil and that is the name of Jesus Christ. Through Him, you and I are overcomers. Amen Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. La Rue Dillard Parish under-shepherd
