Second’s Gazette is published
and distributed monthly, every First Sunday, to provide parishioners with information about our Church, the Community, and the World. Contact us at: Secondsnewsletter@gmail.com Apple Although Genesis 3 doesn't identify the forbidden fruit eaten by Adam and Eve, it has traditionally been thought of and portrayed as an apple. This may be because in Latin, "apple" and "evil" are the same word (malum). An apple, then, often represents humanity's fall into sin. When Christ is shown holding an apple, however, it symbolizes his conquest over sin and death. "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive" (1 Corinthians 15:22, NIV). Second’s Gazette
S
Mission Statement econd’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.
“W
hen God wants to speak and deal with us,” said Martin Luther, “he does not avail himself of an angel but of parents, or the pastor, or of our neighbor.” Never underestimate how powerfully God can use you in the life of a child, a church member, a friend or a stranger. The Hebrew word for angel also means “messenger.” You may be specially chosen to deliver to someone the message of God’s love or guidance. Listen intently for what God would have you share with others, then do so faithfully and caringly.

The Man of God Can Show Us the Way That We Should Go! “Honoring our shepherd who feeds us with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15)
The Flock’s Message to the Bishop:
“L
ook now, there is in this city a man of God and he is an honorable man, all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go” (I Samuel 9:6). Dear Bishop Dillard, Our Parish-Shepherd, Soul-Watcher, Overseer of the Flock of God at Second Baptist Church, Monrovia … By Your Words; you have shown us the way like Moses the Prophet, and the Apostles, you, for Fifty plus years (Forty-two at Second Baptist Church, Monrovia) have answered the call of God upon your life to Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You have stood “boldly,” teaching and proclaiming the unadulterated, inerrant Word of God “In-Season-and-Out-of-Season.” Systematically leaving no stone unturned from Genesis to Revelation, while declaring the final step in learning is application! By Your Actions; you have shown us the way by receiving the call as Overseer, Under-Shepherd, and Soul-Watcher, taking on the incredible responsibility of full oversight at Second Baptist Church, Monrovia; and for the past Forty-two years, we have witnessed your “Crush on and Commitment to the Christ by you being steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord …!” Your actions and joyous, faith-filled demeanor demonstrates your faith and obedience to your high calling to “Shepherd the flock of God” and to “Feed us with knowledge and understanding” as you walk before us to show us the way. Declaring, “I am Serving Christ Joyfully!” So, “Follow me as I follow Christ!” By Your Deeds; you have shown us the way by using your diverse gifts and talents in your service to the Lord Christ. The Holy Spirit has used your “Availability and Astute Labor in Word and Doctrine by preaching and teaching, to enlighten us, to strengthen us, to correct us, to help us grow spiritually, and to equip us to do the work of the church. By your deeds of laboring in the Word, praying for the Saints, preaching/teaching the Gospel truth, visiting the sick, counseling and shepherding the flock, and ministering to our spiritual needs, you do show us the way. Declaring, “I’d rather wear out for God, than to rust out for the devil.” By Your Example; you have shown us the way likened to the accounts of faith in Hebrews, and throughout the Bible. You have made yourself a living example of how to walk by faith. We were blessed in 2015 to see the mighty hand of God working the Greatest Miracle of your life. Howbeit, God honored your faith with a miraculous heart transplant by using brilliant minds, skilled hands, and advancements in Medical Science and Technology to show us what can happen when we put our trust in God. And you declared, “The final step in learning is application!” Therefore, We Thank You! We Salute You! We Appreciate You, and We Honor You with “DoubleHonor” today as the man of God sent to show us the way. Amen!

HERNIA!!! ave you ever wondered, what is a hernia? Well wonder no more! Read to learn exactly what a hernia is and how to treat a hernia.
A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds the organ in place. For example, an intestine may break through a weakened area in the abdominal wall which can cause a hernia. Hernias are often felt and seen. It can be a lump in the abdomen or groin that may or may not disappear when lying down, or being pressed on. It may also cause a dull, aching sensation that may become more pronounced with aggressive activities, and might become bigger over time. Most hernias are in the abdomen, and there are several types of hernias: Inguinal hernia occurs in the groin area, which is the most common type of hernia
Umbilical hernia occurs around the belly button Incisional hernia occurs through a scar Hiatal hernia is a small opening in the diaphragm that allows the upper part of the stomach to move up into the chest Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a birth defect that needs surgery Hernias are common. They can affect men, women, and children during a combination of muscle weakness and straining, such as lifting heavy weights. Some people are born with weak abdominal muscles and may be more likely to get a hernia. Although most people who develop hernias have no specific ‘risk factors,’ but those with the following may be at an increased risk of developing hernias: Being male. Men are more likely to develop inguinal hernias. Women can also get groin hernias, but more infrequently than males. Family history. The risk of developing a hernia increases if you have a close relative, such as a parent or sibling with a history of having hernias. Chronic cough. Chronic coughs that occur from smoking or COPD increase the risk of developing hernias. Chronic constipation. This leads to frequent straining during bowel movements which increases stress on the abdominal wall and increases the chances of developing a hernia. Being overweight. Moderate to severe overweight puts extra stress and pressure on the abdominal muscles. Over time, can weaken the muscles and cause a hernia. Pregnancy. Can weaken the abdominal muscles with the increased pressure inside the abdomen, a hernia occurs. Certain occupations. Jobs that require heavy physical labor increase the risk of developing a hernia due to repeated stress and pressure on the abdominal muscles. History of hernias. If you have had a previous hernia, it is more likely that you can develop another, associated with inguinal or groin hernias on the opposite side. Most hernias are not immediately life threatening, but they don’t go away on their own and can require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications. However, untreated hernias can cause pain and health problems. Treatment is usually surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall. Now we are more informed about Hernias. MOTHER’S DAY LUNCHEON 2016
I
magine a room full of Women of God, intently listing to a message titled “Being Set Free” (Ephesians 2: 8-9). The anticipation, honesty, vulnerability, and energy in the room would be captivating. For the women in attendance at the Mission of Mercy Ministry (MOM) 2016 Annual Mother Day Luncheon on Saturday, April 30, 2016 was their reality.
Theme speaker, Sister Sharon Durall, pointed out some pitfalls and solutions for continued freedom is by staying in the word of God. The afternoon was filled with laughter as Diakona Tammy Lewis and daughters moderated the program. Mother and Daughter teams Elizabeth and Katherine Thomas opened with prayer and scripture, followed by an interactive welcome by Lois and Paije Jenkins. A graceful praise dance to Kierra Sheards “Indescribable” was delivered by 10 year-old Jaylyn Harris, followed by a tribute to SBC’s Council of Mothers. Special tributes were given to all mothers in the audience by Victoria Johnson, Micelle Davis, and Sharon Durall about heart-warming. The luncheon ended with a warm message from an invited guest who expressed her sincere “Thanks” to the women for inviting her, because the message on ‘Being Set Free’ was one she needed to hear which was a testament for the MOM Committee who prayed, prepared and personally invited women from particular shelters to attend as Our Special Invited Guests. THANKS to all the women who took time to come out and fellowship. Collectively, we let our light shine during the luncheon; ultimately, leaving an indelible impression upon our guests.

J
uneteenth is an event worth celebrating and remembering in our Nation’s history, because it was June 19, 1865 when slaves on Galveston Island, Texas first became aware that they were free.
When General Gordon Granger arrived on Galveston Island, Texas in 1865, the slaves on Galveston Island did not know that President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, freeing all slaves in the Confederate States of the Union, meaning slave holding States not governed by the Union. Slaves in Texas did not know that they were freemen and women, and had been free for two years. After General Gordon Granger informed the slaves of their freedom, thus, the birth of a celebration which became known as “Juneteenth,” celebrated event for the slaves, and now for Black Americans throughout this Nation. All but four of the United States of America recognize and celebrate Juneteenth. Alaska, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming have not yet participated in this celebration. Kentucky has celebrated Juneteenth for eight years and Maine has participated for five years. So whatever way you choose to celebrate “Juneteenth 2016,” remember the first slaves who did not know they were free for two long years after slavery ended, and thank God for His deliverance for a Miscegenation of people from slavery and bondage. Amen! Reference: www.juneteenth.com/history

Dr. Precious
his is the time of year when children are getting out of school, and vacations are being planned for a lot of families. That is if parents have been blessed to work and earn time off with pay. However, this is not the case for many American families today.
We are living in perilous times, and many people are barely getting by with the necessities of life. If you decided to take a conversation, with a homeless person (of sound mind), he or she will tell you their story. I have heard from many heads of households who come to the shelter and share happened in their lives that caused them to become homeless. It could have been me or you; but by the grace of God! I have often pondered over how blessed I am to have a home, and live fairly comfortably. This is a blessing that I thank God for daily, as I’m sure you do too! I say that to say this; Jesus said, “There will always be the poor among us, and I (Jesus) am here for only a short time.” As He was being anointed by Mary with her expensive oil, Martha was complaining, and Judas was saying that the oil could be sold to help the poor, (they both had issues!) I hope everyone will have a safe and wonderful time during this vacation season; and remember that we are blessed to be a blessing! Amen.

ll Smith put a spin on Bill Withers' and Grover Washington, Jr's classic love song, "Just The Two Of Us," for his "Big Willie Style" album in 1997, turning it into an ode to his oldest son, Trey Smith. The song features Smith expressing his love to Trey, and giving him some sound fatherly advice. Trey even opens the song with, "Now daddy, this is a very sensitive subject." In the video, his wife Jada Smith makes an appearance, with Jaden Smith in her pregnant belly.

eWayne is a young man with a bright future, and a dark past. He was raised by a single mother who struggled to make ends meet. He loves God and lives his life in direct accordance to the Will of God and whatever He needs him to do. Gang affiliation, jail time, and murder threatened the future of this young man’s life. Through these trials DeWayne drew closer to God, causing him to confess Jesus as his Savior. By the Grace of God things start to work themselves out for DeWayne, after his confession to Christ. He is a rising star as the small forward for Kansas State University, preparing for the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Things are looking good for his future, until he is called to help an old friend; which causes him to put it all on the line…all his dreams, all his accomplishments. But his dreams and aspirations pale in comparison to doing the Will of God.

Tips from: Professor
Renee Willis
-How should you study Accounting? Here are a few suggestions on how to study Accounting; 1.
Stay current. Don't skip my Financial Awareness workshop, class and/or an accounting assignment. Not only are accounting concepts related, they build on earlier concepts. Postponing and cramming is the wrong way to study accounting. Do not delay gaining a true understanding of accounting concepts, homework assignments, exam questions, etc.
2.
Understanding beats memorizing. Accounting concepts are related. For example, if you have a true understanding of the accounting equation, debits and credits, and the matching principle, you will see the logic of adjusting entries. That understanding will eliminate the need to memorize a lot of details concerning adjusting entries.
3.
Strive to understand WHY. As you are learning accounting, make sure that you know the WHY of each concept and principle. When doing your assignments, ask yourself "WHY is my work correct or incorrect?" If you don't understand WHY, read my Accounting Pro explanations that pertains to the topic. Having a second presentation may give you the insight you need.
More to Come, Renee C. Willis, MBA
Why We Need To Learn
C
hristians are called upon to love God with their minds. Therefore, as greatly important as worship is, we have a responsibility to also spend time in learning. We must be informed persons who can articulate our faith and beliefs. If we are not, how can we properly train our children in the way they should grow (Proverbs 22:6)? First Peter 3:15 (NRSV) reads: "Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you."
