Mission Statement Second’s Gazette serves as a monthly newsletter to inform the congregants of valuable information happening on the campus of Second Baptist Church and in the community, as well as spotlight individuals and events that edify our parish church, but most importantly; glorifies the name of Jesus Christ.

F

athers are very important in society. Without them and mothers, society cannot function. All fathers must take the leadership role in the family although this is not the case in many families, including Christian ones. God put them in charge and the mothers are their executive officer (second in command). When the father relinquishes his command or the mother usurps it the family suffers. Any time the ordained order of anything is altered the results are always negative. The best thing to do is for the mother to pray and humbly encourage her husband to take the leadership role if he is not. She cannot nag him into being a spiritual leader; she can only pray him into it. A good way for her to do this is ask him to pray and read the Bible with her. "And these words which I commanded you today shall be on your heart, and you shall repeat them to your sons, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk in the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up." (Deuteronomy 6.6-7) It is not only the responsibility of a mother to take care of the children in a family, it is the fathers responsibility as well. Children who lack the proper care and guidance will end-up in doing harmful things in future. Jesus said, "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). It is the father's responsibility to support the family as head of the household. He should fulfill his responsibilities to keep the family functioning in a positive manner. A father should protect his family by providing proper food, clothes and shelter. As the Scriptures teach, "By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground" (Genesis 3:19). "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever" (1 Timothy 5:8). A father and husband should respect his wife. A husband will gain respect from his wife and from society if he is a good and responsible father. A father who cannot take care of his wife and children will be considered a failure not only in society but according to the Scriptures. The first teacher in the eyes of a child is his father. He should teach his children what is right and what is wrong. A father should be strict, as well as a trusted friend to his children. A good father and head of the family should understand his wife and children and guide them in their difficulties. As a man's boss at work is dependent on workers for growing a company, children depend on father's for the growth of their lives. Children learn by setting a good example for them so that good characteristics are acquired by children when a father asserts a good example. "The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, and he who begets a wise child will delight in him" (Proverbs 28:24

The Assurance of Holiness Articulated by God! {Romans 12:1-2}

People of My Flock; e are distinctly different from non-Christians. The Holy Scriptures declares an assurance of our sanctification that is clearly stated, “You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). We are recipients of this holy calling through the New Covenant we have in Christ Jesus. The New Israelites, the church, is assured of an even greater election to sanctification. Therefore, we are biblically challenged: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable (spiritual) service” (Romans 12:1). This verse calls for a service unto the Lord, involving all of one’s rational powers to be used for the kingdom of God. Be mindful that our bodies are God’s temple because He, the Holy Spirit, lives within. Therefore, if anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him (I Corinthians 3:17). God wants us to be holy in body and in spirit. I Corinthians 6:19 affirms that our body is the temple of God. Thus, it is holy and beloved as we are taught in Colossians 3:12, and encourages us to be upright. As Saints of God, isn’t it strengthening to know that we have been chosen by God? We are His own special people, and we proclaim the praises of Him who have called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. Sanctification is the process of becoming distinctly different. It is our miracle of transformation in which we become more and more like Christ. We were created for growth toward maturity in every facet of life. I believe t hat we can be more than we ever imagined possible. The Bible says, “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). God warns Saints against high-mindedness and exhorts sober-mindedness based on our measure of faith which has been given each Saint in order to work for God (Romans 12:3). Finally, our growth in Christ will occur through a distinctly different quality of life in the home, on the job, and in the parish church for His glory. Have you ever thought of the fact that non-saints laugh at our inability to live what we teach and preach so eloquently? We often bring our culturally conditioned attitude into the fellowship of the church and it hinders our joy in worship. God rejects such and withholds many blessings from us. Let’s change that today. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard

“Do you know the oldest holiday to celebrate the end of Slavery?” JUNETEENTH!

D

uring the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, with an effective date to end slavery in January 1863. The news moved slowly across the country and did not reach Texas until May 1865. On June 19, 1865, the Union Soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with the new that the war was over and the enslaved people were free. The reason it took two and a half years to reach Texas was because the messenger was killed and news was deliberately withheld from the slaves to maintain the workforce on plantations. Historians’ record that the enslaved people reactions to the end of slavery were pure shock and jubilation, thus the “Juneteenth” celebration was born. Juneteenth was a time for gathering with family members, praying and giving thanks for slaves’ deliverance from bondage. Now they could focus on education and self-improvement. Today, many descendants of former slaves make the annual pilgrimage back to Galveston, Texas to celebrate this historic day, on June 19. Reference: Juneteenth.com. ince I have been recovering from surgery, I can truly see “all things are possible with Christ.”

Recovery is a word with a broad definition, because we recovery from so many things throughout of our lives. But the most profound definition of recovery is from a specific illness or event that requires rehabilitation. Anyone who has gone through surgery, organ or limb replacement knows what rehab is all about. But how do we go through a spiritual rehabilitation? Since there is no spiritual replacement, we have to “rehab” the one we have. I am persuaded and encouraged, even rehabilitated by James 1: 2-12 NIV for Trials and Temptations: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” Thanks Bishop Dillard for showing us how to persevere (spiritual rehab) through the storms of life. Congratulations on your 41st Anniversary!!!

n today's on-the-run society, where sitting down for a meal is sometimes an impossible luxury, the emergence of nutrition bars may seem to be just what the doctor ordered. These pocket-sized bars once found favor with athletes looking for a competitive edge, now anyone who feels the need for a nutritional boost might keep a few stashed in a purse or a briefcase.

In the current bar-wars environment, there are literally hundreds of pre-wrapped and portable products competing for shelf space at gyms, health-food stores, and supermarkets. However, nutritionists agree that not all bars are created equal. There are high-carbohydrate bars, protein bars, energy bars, breakfast bars, brain -boosting bars, meal-replacement bars, diet bars, and women-only bars. With so many to choose from, consumers hungering for a quick nutritional fix -- whether they're recreational athletes, workaholics tied to their desks, or overcommitted moms with barely a moment to spare -- may feel dizzy from all the product overkill and heavily hyped claims. Twinkie's give energy; energy bars give energy because they all provide lots of calories. Most nutritionists emphasize when consuming nutrition bars, don't let them crowd whole foods from your diet. For a quick snack, try eating an apple or a banana. Ingredients in whole foods are missing from energy bars. Instead of a nutrition bar, you can choose an alternative snack like a container of low-fat yogurt with high-fiber cereal in it, or a fiber-rich bagel with a tomato and a small slice of low-fat Swiss cheese melted on it. When trying out nutrition bars, remember to evaluate the facts:  Look for a bar that is low in fat (less than 5 grams of fat).  When evaluating the fiber content of bars, aim for 3 to 5 grams of fiber.  If you are watching your weight, check the calories listed on the label.  If you are shopping for a meal-replacement bar, choose one that has about 15 or more grams of protein, with some fiber. Meal-replacement bars tend to be larger than other bars, with proportionately higher levels of carbohydrates, fats, and protein.  Consume some real food with the bar. If you consume multiple bars per day, make sure you are not biting off more vitamins and minerals than you should chew, which might interfere with the absorption of other minerals and even weaken the immune system. Be a discerning consumer and live life healthy!

Teens In Progress (TIP) Competing at the NAACP ACT-SO Competition

P

asadena Branch NAACP ACT-SO (Afro Academics Cultural Technological Science Olympics) hosted the Local Competition and Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Four T.I.P. members Jordan Adkison (vocalist); Lametra Spicer and Dylan-LaRue Dillard (Poetry Performance and Original Written Poetry); and newcomer, Kayla Wilson (Original Essay) gave it their all.

Jordan and Kayla received Gold Medals, and Dylan received the Bronze Medal. Gold medalists will compete on the national level in Philadelphia on July 8, 2015. Let’s congratulate all of the contestants from T.I.P. for their courage and efforts in sharing their creativity. Dylan LaRue Dillard responded: “On April 25, I competed for the first time ever using my talent of the written word; poetry. This was an incredible experience with ACTSO (Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics). I thank Ms. Lois Gaston for introducing this opportunity to T.I.P., and my Mom for encouraging me to try. It was interesting meeting other young people my age with different aspirations and goals which made me want to continue to focus on the things I want to do. I would encourage all teens to try whether they think they have talent or not. I had fantastic mentors in Ondrea Pointer, actor extraordinaire, and Dr. Gerda Govine, who is a published author. I thank them for their time and patience with me. I am truly honored to be invited to travel with the Gold Medalists’ winners to Philadelphia in July to meet and greet other teens from across this nation. I ask for your prayers as God unlocks my talents for HIS glory.” We are so proud of our talented teens and are so blessed they are using their gifts for the Glory of God.

Water Baptism! “Many People Ask If It's Required for Salvation”

B Left to Right—Diakona James Harvey, Alarick, Elder james Walker. Alarick is the grandson of Larry and Deborah Hayes

aptism is not an act that gets us into heaven - it is faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord that offers that assurance. Baptism (by full immersion as taught in the Bible) is an act of obedience that should be an immediate part of our acceptance of the gift of grace offered by Jesus Christ. But it does not mean that one who truly gives their heart to Jesus on a death bed, in the heat of warfare, or in a crashing airplane, will be kept out of heaven because they failed to be baptized. The thief on the cross next to Jesus didnot have time to be baptized before he died, but he had an opportunity to believe in Jesus and put his trust in Him, and Jesus responded by saying, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43).

M Right to Left: Diakona Tamara Lewis, Mr. & Mrs. Darrell Adkison, Alarick Newsome and Diakona JoAnne Craig

any churchgoers are familiar with the term "the Right Hand of Fellowship," but few are familiar with its meaning. In our passage, we find that James, Peter, and John gave "the Right Hand of Fellowship" to Paul and Barnabas. What was the purpose or significance of this act? By giving the Right Hand of Fellowship, these believers were agreeing to serve God together. James, Peter and John would focus on reaching the circumcision (the Jewish people), while Paul and Barnabas would focus on reaching the uncircumcised (Gentiles). When we give someone the Right Hand of Fellowship, we agree to serve God with that believer.

Have you Counted the Cost? A song by A.J. Hodge from the Revival Hymnal

Achieving Your Financial Goals – Step #4

4. Pay Yourself First

Have you counted, have you counted the cost? You may barter your hope of eternity’s morn,

The key to saving is discipline. Automating your savings plan is the best strategy for achieving your financial goals. For example, have $100 (whatever you’re comfortable with) taken from your paycheck or checking account each month and put into a money market, annuity, mutual fund or life insurance as savings plan. The pay-yourself-first strategy works infinitely better than settling for whatever is leftover at the end of the month. Some employers offer automatic savings plans that deposit money directly from your paycheck into various types of accounts. Set aside your Tithe.

For a moment of joy at the most, For the glitter of sin, and the things it will win,

Remember it is never too soon or too late to save for retirement.

Have you counted the cost, If your soul should be lost, Tho you gain the whole world for your own, Even now it may be, that the line your have crossed,

Have you counted, have you counted the cost? While the door of His Mercy is open to you, Ere the depth of His Love you exhaust, Won't you come and be healed, won't you whisper I yield,
