The Butterfly The butterfly symbolizes resurrec-

tion, Easter and the new life we have in Christ Jesus. As a caterpillar disappears into a chrysalis, so Jesus' dead body was hidden in a tomb. The emergence of the butterfly, rising into the sky in its beautiful new body, reminds us of Christ's resurrection — and ours.

Hey, Death! You lose!

T

he Master said it affirmatively: “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19, NRSV). William Sloane Coffin said, “We are on the road to heaven now if we walk with the Lord.”

Do you believe it? If you fully accept Christ’s resurrection, you can be assured that you, as a child of God and a follower of Christ, will live eternally. If you were a gifted sculptor, would you, after working a number of years, grab a hammer and smash your masterpiece to pieces? Of course not! Just so, God wouldn’t allow death to triumph over us ... unless we arrogantly chose otherwise. St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “[I]f Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:14, NRSV). But then he affirmed: “In fact Christ has been raised from the dead” (verse 20). That will be true for all who call Christ Savior.

CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TERM: “AFRICAN AMERICAN!” (Exodus 34:12-17)

Sons and Daughters in Light, The Holy Bible says, “Take heed….lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and you take of the daughters for your sons, and his daughters play the harlot with their gods and make your sons play the harlot with their gods” (Exodus 34: 1516).

Americans of African descent comes from an ancient noble people, and this is a time to recapture the genius of our ancient biblical forefathers. We must trust the Living Word of God in our quest for truth, even in the matter of humankind’s beginning and development. We, therefore must demonstrate confidence in the ability God has given us and make ourselves available to Him at all times. When the mind is stretched with new truths its original dimension is lost! The term “Americans of African Decent” should be used proudly to highlight and identify the origin of humanity, and ethnic people of color. The biblical history of the ancestors of present-day African Americans is recorded in the annuals of the oldest country of recorded biblical history, “ETHIOPIA,” (Assyria equals Hebrew (Ashshur), the first nation mention on the continent of Africa in the Holy Bible. The real truth is that “Black Africans” and their descendants were enslaved in the southern part of these United States of America, from the mid A.D. 1600s, until the winter of 1861, the signing of the ‘Emancipation Proclamation’ on Thursday, January 31, 1861, by PRESIDENT Abraham Lincoln. Thus legally slaves were granted freedom. The Civil War ensured, and finally on December 18, 1865, when some 4.8 million ethnic Black Americans of African descent marched out of slavery on that cold winter day, with the hopes of becoming an integral thread in the social fabric of this new nation. We seek to acknowledge and celebrate our ancient ethnicity and heritage like any other ethnic group in this country. When you mention the words: “Old Country” to certain older ethnic groups in this country such as: {IRISH, KOREAN, MEXICAN, JAPANESE, CHINESE, FILIPINO, AND AMERICAN}, they know and identify with them. Likewise, we celebrate and reflect upon how we arrived here, and what our goals are. Thus every other ethnic group in this ethnically diverse society can tell you about his heritage, and they can tell you his bloodline and pedigree six, seven, or more generations. Be ambitious in learning about this form of history, and pass it on! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully

Blast From The Past By Sherry Joiner

Norma Merrick Sklarek (April 15, 1928 – February 6, 2012)

was an African-American architect who accomplished many firsts for Black women in architecture.

B

orn in Harlem, New York, to Trinidadian parents, she attended Hunter College High School, then went to Barnard College, and acquired her architecture degree in 1950 from Columbia University School of Architecture. She was one of the first black women to be licensed as an architect in the United States, and the first to be licensed in the state of New York in 1954 and in the state of California in 1962. After receiving her degree, Sklarek was unable to find work at an architecture firm, so she took a job at the New York Department of Public Works. Later she spent four years at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. She became the first African-American director of architecture at Gruen and Associates in Los Angeles, CA, in 1966, and she also worked with the Jon Jerde Partnership. Sklarek became the first Black woman to be elected Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1980. In 1985, she became the first African-American female architect to form her own architectural firm: Siegel, Sklarek, Diamond, which was the largest woman-owned and mostly woman-staffed architectural firm in the United States. Among Sklarek's designs are the San Bernardino City Hall in San Bernardino, California, the Fox Plaza in San Francisco, Terminal One at the Los Angeles International Airport and the Embassy of the United States in Tokyo Japan. Following her retirement, she served on the California Architects Board. She also served for several years as Chair of the AIA National Ethics Council. In her honor, Howard University offers the Norma Merrick Sklarek Architectural Scholarship Award. Norma Merrick Sklarek is an honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

irst things first: Happy Birthday Bishop William Larue Dillard! You are the vision of God’s miracle working power, and I applaud the work you do for Him and the work He’s done in you!

We know that the Lord is with us; those of us who believe this may ask, ‘but how do we know? I AM WITH YOU, watching over you constantly. I AM IMMANUEL (God with you); My presence enfolds you with radiant love. Nothing, including the brightest blessing and the darkest trials, can separate you from Me. Some of my children find Me more readily during dark times, when difficulties force them to depend on Me. Others feel closer to Me when their lives are filled with good things. They respond with thanksgiving and praise, thus opening wide the door to My Presence.

(Sarah Young, 40 days with Jesus) The above writing is confirmation that Jesus is always with us. The real confirmation is in His Holy Word! All the other commentaries written originate from the original Holy Book. As Christians should always have a daily commentary to Jesus of His love for us daily, and how we have received it with thanksgiving; regardless of our current circumstance. Thank you Jesus!

Historical Roots of Second Baptist Church ach year in March, Bishop Dillard and the congregants of Second Baptist Church Monrovia celebrate Founder’s Day. Perhaps you are wondering, “What is Founder’s Day?” It is the time to reflect on our past, and honor the people who laid the foundation and paved the way for us, a new generation of parishioners, to have a place of worship.

We celebrate not only our beginnings, but our pledge and commitment to continue the courageous acts of our founders. We do this by ensuring that future generations will have a place to worship for decades to come. To appreciate where we are going, we must understand how far we have come, and the challenges we conquered to get to this point on SBC’s historical time-line. Our church’s history started in March, 1902 when thirteen persons of great faith met for prayer at 423 E. Maple Avenue, in the home of Deacon William H. and Deaconess Pinky Watkins. We researched census and other ancestry records and discovered additional information about some of the founders of SBC. We now know full names for: Brother William M. Burleson and Sister Bettie Burleson who resided at 525 E. Cypress Avenue; Brother Eli Charles Lyle and Sister Loretta Lyle of 419 E. Maple Avenue; Reverend William Robinson of 1242 Sherman Avenue, and Sister Amelia Richardson of 1224 Sherman Avenue. Brother and Sister Hilbert Gordon (Sister Gordon’s first name is unknown); Brothers William Monroe & E.D. Stogland; and Sister A.C. Terrill.

7 This “Body-in-Christ” was organized to answer the pressing question, at this time in the Negro Community (1902-1903), “What is a community without a church, especially for those who wish to serve God in a secure, comfortable atmosphere?” Today, as it was back then, there is a need for the church to be a guiding light and undertake new ventures to ensure that God’s people have a place to worship. Eager lovers of God, fearless Negroes as they were called in those days, went from house to house and prayed for direction from the Holy Spirit for their dream to come to fruition - a church home. We are still benefiting from their stepping out on faith. For us, it is the –Now Generation– we have in mind. In March 1904, our thirteen founding members participated in a march to Monrovia’s First Baptist Church. This was a memorable time in our history because First Baptist was an All-White congregation who gave an additional $500. Now Second Baptist members, who had already raised $150, had enough money to purchase a lot on Duarte Avenue, two blocks north of our current location at Maple and Shamrock. Lumber was purchased, but there was no money to pay a carpenter. Therefore, members and friends came together and built a one room church house, 25 x 50 feet. This was Second Baptist’s first building. The first sermon preached in our church was titled “A Little Grain of Corn” by Reverend J.M. Gremble, Acting Pastor. Records state, “It was an unforgettable day!” 113 years have passed, and during this time there have been 12 “Short-Tenured” Pastors. Our first pastor was Reverend Lieutenant Allen Allensworth. In 1943, God blessed us with Reverend George Godfrey Bailey and 30 years later, with Bishop Wm. LaRue Dillard. Together they have led SBC for 72 years; and our prayer is that Bishop Dillard will continue to lead us for many more. SBC was incorporated in 1965. Tremendous growth, both spiritual and financial, plus monumental challenges have been successfully achieved during the Bailey/Dillard Era. As the founders of Second Baptist Church did, we keep stepping out on FAITH and doing what it takes to carry on the legacy. Today, we can celebrate 113 years because of our founders, pastors and members. In 2022, Second Baptist will be 120 years old. With God’s help, our prayers and faith efforts, we can duplicate what our founders did back in 1902 – provide a new sanctuary where folks can worship. We will continue to document Second Baptist’s history and each member’s personal story. All of us can add “Branches” and “Legendary Leaves” to SBC Historical Tree so that future generations will be able to celebrate Founder’s Day, 113 years from now and longer. Remember, we are writing history. Let’s Write Well!

Drug Expiration Dates

W

ith a splitting headache you reach into your medicine cabinet for an aspirin only to find the stamped expiration date has expired, two years ago. So, do you take it or not? If you decide to take the aspirin, will it be a fatal mistake or will you simply continue to suffer from the headache?

People often have questions about drug expiration dates. Can they take a medication if it has reached the drug expiration date? Are there recommendations about the best way to store medications? Are there certain drugs that should never be used past their expiration date? For many, these questions arise because medications can be expensive, and it is costly to frequently replace expired and unused medications. So, this is a dilemma many people face in some way or another. It turns out that the expiration date on a drug does stand for something, but probably not what you think it does. Since a law was passed in 1979, drug manufacturers are required to stamp an expiration date on their products. This is the date at which the manufacturer can still guarantee the full potency and safety of the drug. Is the expiration date a marketing ploy by drug manufacturers or to keep you restocking your medicine cabinet and their pockets regularly? You can look at it that way. Or, you can also look at it this way, the expiration dates are very conservative to ensure you get everything you paid for. At the pharmacy, "beyond-use" dates are often put on the prescription bottle label given to patients. These dates often say "do not use after..." or "discard after..." and are required by the Board of Pharmacy in many states. These dates are typically one year from the date on the stock bottle. But why would these expiration dates be different? According to the manufacturer, the stability of a drug cannot be guaranteed once the original bottle is opened. Therefore, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the body that sets the standards for pharmaceutical quality in the U.S., recommends using "beyond use" dates. The "beyond use" date would never be later than the expiration date on the manufacturer's bottle. Proper storage of medications may help to extend their potency. The bathroom and medicine cabinet are not ideal places to store medications due to heat and humidity. Similarly, medications should not be left in a hot car. Medications remain most stable in dry, cool spaces away from light. Keep the prescription bottle caps tightly closed and always keep medications out of reach of children and pets. The next time you face the drug expiration date dilemma, consider what you’ve learned here. If the expiration date passed a few years ago and it’s important that your drug is absolutely 100% effective, you might want to consider buying a new bottle. And if you have any questions about the safety or effectiveness of any drug, ask your pharmacist. He or she is a great resource when it comes to getting more information about your medications.

Progress Report on TIP (Teens-In-Progress) Miss Keyera Collins n January 18, 2015, 18 year old Keyera Collins

was honored with a scholarship from the Pomona Inland Valley Martin Luther King, Jr. Project. TIP is so proud of her accomplishment! On receiving this scholarship, Keyera stated; “God has truly blessed me and my life because I had the honor and privilege to be one of the winners of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. This was a surprise being that I did not expect to receive this award. As a recipient, it has given me an incentive to work hard and pursue higher education.” Keyera said that she occasionally looks back at the awards and accomplishments and think about how God has worked in her life and she is eternally grateful. She hopes that she can be an example for younger people, and also seasoned people that God will bless them and provide them with things they have never thought about. She says that she is so thankful for everyone who kept her in their prayers and been there for her. She states, “Keep God as the head of your life and blessings will rain down on you!”

Mission of mercy Valentine’s Day Rally On Sunday, February15th twenty-one SBC Teens-In-Progress (TIP) youth took to the streets of Shamrock & Huntington Dr. (Monrovia) at the Annual Valentines Weekend Rally. A rally is a mass of people making a political protest or showing support for a cause. What was the cause? John 3:16 tells us that ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ Youth participating wanted to win the hearts, minds and souls of the on-lookers, as to the Greatest Love them All – Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. The street rally has become a tradition during Valentines weekend, a weekend filled with expressions of love. The teens prayed for the lost before taking to the street. They planted the seeds with signs, now let us all watch God at work.

The Rooster The rooster is reminiscent of Peter's threefold denial of Jesus on the night of Jesus' trial (Matthew 26:34, NIV); thus; it may represent faithlessness in general, especially in the face of danger. Because of the rooster's earlymorning call, it's also symbolic of watchfulness: "Therefore keep watch," said Jesus, illustrating the return of the Son of Man, "because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back — whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn" (Mark 13:35, NIV).

The Bullet

By Eric M. Johnson

Beware the fired explosion, Sound alarm awakes, All that surrounds the atmosphere of those who lie in wait, Rapid action, powder, metal tumbles free, Shot at once from danger, In the vicinity, After which a twitch, A check of vital signs, Lurking with destruction, For whom the pains designed, Cause-Less and effectiveness, Seldom incomplete, Leaving many widowed, Corpses in the streets, Triggered pain, Funerals, Maiming human life, Strife! Shouldn't we reason before squeezing a metal, grafted shaft? It only drops what's laying in it's path, Tie a yellow ribbon, around a crimson aftermath, Don't have a gun, Don't need one, It's time to lay 'em down, For the bullet has no conscience, If it's fired when you you're around. Black lives matter in the name of Jesus.
