A note from the Founder and Chief Editor
C
ongratulations Second Baptist Church, 116 years of serving God. Can it get any better? Serving the Lord in the same place, same time every Sunday. He so diligently loves and blesses us daily and cares for us so gently, it is no wonder so many of us love Him so much. It is no secret what God can do, what He’s done for others, He’ll do for you. As you travel through the newsletter this month looking over all the Black History we discussed and shared think about all the history we did not discuss, there is so much that we dare not try to share it in this newsletter. There is not enough room. Enjoy reading the history of past Second Baptist members whom are gone on to be with the Lord and consider the legacy you may want to start building now, for your children your other family members and your church. Be an active part of our history, come out next Saturday, March 10th to celebrate Monrovia Area Partnership Block Party and Neighborhood Treasure Reveal.

How Do Christians Survive In A World of Temptation? (I John 2:12-15)
Sons and Daughters in Light, Grace to You!
C
hristians are guided by the Word of God in all things. God says: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (I John 2:15).
The “Word,” cosmos in Greek, means an organized system headed by Satan which leaves God out, and is a rival to Him. Though God loves the world of mankind (John3:16), Saints are not to love the world at all, for it is that which organizes them against God (I John 5:19; John 3:19; and James 1:27; 4:4). One of he most difficult challenges for Christians is to live in the world without the world living in them. As we live in the world, how can we live in vital union with Christ Jesus and still please Him? How are Christians not to love the world? The whole world system (based on a person’s desires, greedy ambitions, and glamour of all that they think is splendid), is not derived from God, the Father at all, but from the world itself. God confronts us with the world-what it is in stark reality and how to live in it with Christians integrity. In the New Testament, the term world has a profound moral implication. The world is any person, relationship, structure of society, circumstance or situation which has been unredeemed by God’s judgment and grace. As a spiritual kingdom of Saints, we live in history, and in the world. Our ultimate love and loyalty is to God. Then we can love the world creatively without needing either its accolades or affluence. When we love the world as God did in Jesus Christ, we are given marching orders to care for people and introduce them to life as it was meant to be in Christ and our perspective and ambition change. With people as the focus of our concern, we can do battle with the false values of society and anything which distorts and dehumanizes people in their primary purpose to know and love God. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,
Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

Second Baptist Church Founder’s Day Celebration Look Back in History 116 Years old (1902-2018)
O
ur first pastor, Lt. Col. Allen Allensworth, was born into slavery in Kentucky on April 7, 1842. He escaped during the American Civil War and became a Union soldier. Later, he became a Baptist minister and educator, and was appointed as a chaplain in the United States Army. He was one of the Buffalo Soldiers’ leaders and the highest ranking American of African descent in the military at that time. In 1877, he married Josephine Leavell, an accomplished pianist, organist and music teacher. They had two daughters, Eva and Nella. After the Colonel’s retirement in 1906, he and his wife led the founding of Allensworth, California, an all-black town in Kern County. It is now a historic state park. Our records do not show when Rev. Allensworth was called to pastor here but we do know he was Second Baptist’s first pastor. He was struck by a motorcycle sidecar while walking north on what is now Myrtle Avenue near where the 210 Freeway is located today. We believe he was on his way to Second Baptist from the Santa Fe Railroad Station. Because of his race, he was denied medical help in Monrovia; was transferred to Los Angeles where he died on Sept 14, 1914. He is buried in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles. His granddaughter, Josephine Blodgett Smith attended SBC’s 100th Anniversary Banquet. She was a graduate of UCLA, a gifted educator, a retired LAUSD teacher, and a charter member of the Los Angeles Chapter of Links, Inc. for which she served over 60 years. She was a community activist, and Neuro-Linguistic Programmer. She passed away at the age of 96 on July 18, 2010. Look at Wikipedia’s Internet research added to Colonel Allensworth’s biography a sentence that reads, “A public monument, designed by Ron Husband, has been funded by the City of Monrovia, California”. Let’s all attend the Hidden Treasure Block Party celebrating our first pastor on March 10 th from 11am to 2pm.

ishop Dillard was called to minster the word of God 61 years ago. He started to develop his “crush on the Christ” at a very young age. In 1973, he was personally selected by Rev. George Godfrey Bailey to co-pastor here and decided the Gem City of the Foothills would be home. He has been preaching and teaching here for the last 44 years. He is punctual, articulate, and pragmatic when he ministers the Word of the Lord. He does not take the words from the Bible and pontificate (preach) his own truth. He exegetes the word of God from the Holy Spirit - Amen, Saints? He has been a blessing to this church. Bishop Dillard, you are the young man, with a big heart, who once styled a big Afro. But now, with less hair, you have a new heart. We thank God for you - our Miracle on Shamrock Avenue. We salute you, not only for being this little country church’s Soul Watcher but for preaching and spreading the Gospel for 61 years, here and abroad and for being the oldest heart transplant survivor in the world! Things To Remember About Bishop Dillard
He was born in Suffolk, Virginia on March 19, 1936
He accepted Christ while serving in the U. S. Air Force; was ordained into the ministry at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Los Angeles by Dr. Edward Victor Hill; has proclaimed the renowned Rev. Billy Graham as a mentor since 1959.
He has preached the gospel in West Africa, England, Israel, the Philippines, Mexico and the United States.
He is the author of several books, including “A Burning And A Yearning in My Soul”, “Invasion From Outer Space”, a New Member’s Orientation Bible Study that is widely used in ministry and “Biblical Ancestry Voyage” that is an academia resource book.
He became co-pastor with Rev. George Godfrey Bailey on January 1, 1974 and was installed as the 14th pastor of Second Baptist Church Monrovia, Inc. on May 26, 1974.
He married Lady Betty Gay in August of 1974. They now have five adult children (one deceased) and three grandchildren. The youngest was born on his 80th birthday.

iakona Charlie “Chuck” Williams? He is pretty much everywhere around our church. If you need help with repairs within the church, you go to Deacon Chuck. If you have questions about getting a copy of Bishop’s publications or need a New Members manual, you go see Deacon Chuck in our bookstore. If you have questions about the Building Fund and how much has been contributed, you see Deacon Chuck.
Charlie Williams was born in Lumpkin, Georgia in 1942. His parents were sharecroppers. Chuck earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Economics in 1967 from Tuskegee University; where was named to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”, joined the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and was president of the Young Democrats on campus. That resulted in his being invited and attending President Lyndon Johnson’s inaugural balls in Washington DC. Years later, Chuck went back to visit the White House and took more than 80 of us from Second Baptist with him. He is well educated and experience. Having matriculated from the Graduate School of Business at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. Chuck earned his Master of Science Degree in Management from Claremont Graduate School, in Claremont California May of 1985. At Miller Brewing Company he held management positions and retired after 26 years there. Charlie Williams has been married to his quiet but very supportive wife, Martha, for 42 1/2 years. They joined Second Baptist Church on January 1, 1984 and have been active and faithful leaders for 34 years. Chuck, the founder and operator of our bookstore, also leads our planning, fundraising and construction activities. He oversees and manages the multi-purpose Fannie M. Goodwin Building and has been the Building Commission Chairperson since 1990. Through prayer, faith budgeting, a $25,000 grant Chuck secured from the Webb Berger Foundation and Second Baptist members’ “Not Equal Giving But Equal Sacrifice” efforts God allowed us to move in on January 15, 1994 and to pay off the 30-year $1.6 million mortgage 15 years early. On November 11, 2006 we burned the mortgage. Chuck is always around campus in some way. On campus, he is one of the trinity teachers in our Church School; serves faithfully in Bible Study, the Deaconship ministry and Angel Tree program. Off campus, he leads our Soul Winning Action Team and works with our Prison Ministry. We thank God for bringing Diakona Williams to SBC and applaud his accomplishments. The next time you see Chuck thank him for the continued leadership he provides in keeping up and improving on our 116 year foundation.

gt. Julian Fisher, a member of Second Baptist Church, was Monrovia’s first African American police officer. He was the son of a former slave; born in Denver, CO and resided in Monrovia from about 1909 until his passing in 1976. Mr. Fisher was the first African American graduate from Monrovia’s high school. His granddaughter was 1 st Monrovia Day Queen. The Park at California & Maple is named for him – the first American of African descent in Monrovia to receive such an honor. It was renovated and rededicated on December 2, 2017. His granddaughter, Betty Fisher Thomas is still active at Second Baptist and in this community.
W
illie “Bill” Brooks, born in Alabama in 1932, graduated from Dillard University and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Bill moved to Monrovia in 1956 and like his aunt, Eldora Polk, joined Second Baptist Church. He married Lois Farrar, our organist back then. When Bishop Dillard came here in 1974, Bill Brooks was then and had been for years, Chairman of our Trustee and Joint boards as well as our Sunday School Superintendent. He helped us remodel our Sanctuary and erect the G. G. Bailey Fellowship Hall. Mr. Brooks was Human Relations Director at City of Hope Medical Center - the first African American to hold that position, we believe. Bill was an avid civil and human rights activist. He served on Monrovia’s first Human Relations Committee and actively campaigned in elections that gave Monrovia it’s first Black School Board Member (Mimi Martin Mency) and it’s first Black Mayor (Robert “Bob” Bartlett). Bill brought his NAACP membership and Voters Registration skills from the deep South to the Rotary Club of Duarte. He was a CHANGEMAKER not only in Monrovia but all around the world. Duarte’s Rotary allowed women to join their club. Rotary International kicked them out of the organization. Bill and his “dishonored” club fought gender discrimination. They filed a lawsuit, took it all the way to the United States Supreme Court and won! Today, women and minorities world-wide can be members and officers of service clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks, Lions, etc. all around the world.

nvision this church years from now with some our youngest males leading. For instance Jeremy Coleman, 2018 King of Children’s Church, is a future leader. He is in the 4th grade, a role model, with good behavior at home, school and at Second Baptist. Jeremy knows his Bible and brings it to church. He participates in worship – probably because his grandmother is Sister Lucille Coleman. He has a variety of talents – soccer, football, and “A New Star” actor. He played one of the Three Kings last December 9th. Next time you see Jeremy, let him know you are proud of him because of what he is doing now and what we hope he will do to build God’s kingdom here in the future at SBC.. We salute Jeremy and former Kings of Children Church – those young men of this 116 year old historic church who are pictured below.
We are grateful to God and our 13 original founders for this church’s beginning and to King Jeremy Coleman and all of our children for Second Baptist’s future; to Lt. Col. Allensworth, our twelve pastors and all the men, women and children who came afterward; to Bishop Dillard for his 61 years of preaching and 44 years of pastoring and teaching here; to Chuck Williams, Bill Brooks and Julian Fisher for their legacies; and for all of you for continuing to add to this 116 year old evangelical church’s foundation. Thanks to Brother Newt Oliver, Diakona Nadine Harris - Founder of Second’s Gazette and Sister Tinisha McDonald for using their God–given talents to commemorate our church’s 116th anniversary. Remember the celebration continues here at Second Baptist on Saturday, March 10 th.

Every month I bring you the hottest artists and tracks. This month I decided to share piece of me. I think women need to do that more often. Whether a woman is happy, sad, emotional, in love, discouraged, or on top of the world she has that playlist she plays and this month I wanted to share mine. Here is my top 10 for every occasion!
There are great and interesting mothers throughout the Bible. We all think of Mary the mother of Jesus as amazingly confident and strong for her service. We may even think of Eve the mother of us all but there are other mothers in the Bible who sacrificed it all. Deborah was both a prophetess and ruler of the people of ancient Israel, the only woman among the twelve judges. She held court under the Palm Tree of Deborah in the hill country of Ephraim, deciding the people's disputes.

ex. In a world overwhelmingly obsessed with it, why is the church so silent about it? While our secular culture twists, perverts, cheapens, and idolizes sex, there are gaping holes in the church's guidance of young people. The result is generations of sexually illiterate people drowning in the repercussions of overwhelming sin struggles.
In the beginning, God created the earth and rested. Then God created Man and rested. Then God created Woman. Since then, neither God nor Man has rested.

Enough is enough, says Mo Isom. With raw vulnerability and a bold spirit, she shares her own sexual testimony, opening up the conversation about misguided rule-following, virginity, temptation, porn, promiscuity, false sex-pectations, sex in marriage, and more and calling readers back to God's original design for sex--a way to worship and glorify him. This book is for the young person tangled up in an addiction to pornography, for the girlfriend feeling pressured to go further, for the "good girl" who followed the rules and saved herself for marriage and then was confused and disappointed, for the married couple who use sex as a bargaining tool, for every person who casually watches sex play out in TV and movies and wonders why they're dissatisfied with the real thing, and for every confused or hurting person in-between. Sex was God's idea. It's time we invited him back into the bedroom.

M
arch is colorectal cancer awareness month! Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects people in all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people age 50 and older.
The good news? If everyone age 50 and older were screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to encourage people to get screened. The rates of new colorectal cancer cases and deaths among adults are decreasing in this country due to an increase in screening and to changes in some risk factors (for example, a decline in smoking). However, incidence is increasing among younger adults for reasons that are not known. The major risk factors for colorectal cancer are a family history of the disease and older age, but several other factors have been associated with increased risk, including excessive alcohol use, obesity, being physically inactive, cigarette smoking, and, possibly, diet. In addition, people with a history of inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease) have a higher risk of colorectal cancer than people without such conditions. People should talk with their health care provider about when to begin screening for colorectal cancer, what test(s) to have, the advantages and disadvantages of each test, how often to undergo screening, and when to stop. The decision about which test to have usually takes into account several factors, including: The person’s age, medical history, family history, and general health The potential harms of the test The preparation required for the test Whether sedation may be needed for the test The follow-up care needed after the test The convenience of the test The cost of the test and the availability of insurance coverage Colorectal cancer screening tests all have advantages and disadvantages: The Affordable Care Act requires coverage of colorectal cancer screening tests by health plans that started on or after September 23, 2010. People should check with their health insurance provider to determine their colorectal cancer screening coverage. Medicare covers several colorectal cancer screening tests for its beneficiaries. Specific information about Medicare benefits for colorectal cancer screening is available on the Medicare website. How can Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month make a difference? We can use this month to raise awareness about colorectal cancer and take action toward prevention. Communities, organizations, families, and individuals can get involved and spread the word. Here are just a few ideas: Encourage families to get active together – exercise may help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Talk to family, friends, and people in your community about the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50. Encourage people over 50 to decide which colorectal cancer screening test they prefer. Ask doctors and nurses to talk to patients age 50 and older about the importance of getting screened. Billy Graham
W
illiam Franklin Graham Jr. (November 7, 1918 – February 21, 2018) was an American evangelical Christian evangelist and an ordained Southern Baptist minister who became well known internationally after 1949. He has been looked upon as one of the most influential preachers of the 20th century.[2] He held large indoor and outdoor rallies with sermons that were broadcast on radio and television, some still being re-broadcast into the 21st century. In his six decades of television, Graham hosted annual Billy Graham Crusades, which ran from 1947 until his retirement in 2005. He also hosted the popular radio show Hour of Decision from 1950 to 1954. He repudiated segregation. Graham preached to live audiences of nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories through various meetings, including BMS World Mission and Global Mission. Graham was a spiritual adviser to American presidents and provided spiritual counsel for every president from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.[5] He was particularly close to Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson (one of Graham's closest friends),[6] and Richard Nixon.[7] He insisted on racial integration for his revivals and crusades in 1953 and invited Martin Luther King Jr. to preach jointly at a revival in New York City in 1957. Graham bailed King out of jail in the 1960s when King was arrested during demonstrations. According to his staff, more than 3.2 million people have responded to the invitation at Billy Graham Crusades to "accept Jesus Christ as their personal savior". As of 2008, Graham's estimated lifetime audience, including radio and television broadcasts, topped 2.2 billion. Because of his crusades, Graham preached the gospel to more people in person than anyone in the history of Christianity.[9] Graham was repeatedly on Gallup's list of most admired men and women. Ref. the rich history of African-American martial artists and brought the future for all to see with a vibrant poem called “Fight To Live, Fight to Learn, Fight Know, Fight to Grow”. This powerful poem coupled with MaKeo Green (Master Orange Belt) who demonstrated his abilities with nun chucks had everyone on their feet. MaKeo studies at Evolution Muay Thai Martial Science, locally. With this skill in the physical realm and having a praying mother I am sure people will think twice before messing with them.
