od says to give thanks in everything. That doesn’t mean you need to give thanks for everything. You don’t need to give thanks for that bad day. Or for that bad relationship. Or being passed over at work. Financial hardship. Whatever it is — you are not to give thanks for the difficulties but rather in the difficulties. That is a very important distinction, and one I think we often miss. Giving thanks in everything shows a heart of faith that God is bigger than the difficulties and that He can use them, if you approach Him with the right heart and spirit, for your good and His glory. —Tony Evans Great Message…...

“O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (Psalms 107:1).
W
ithin the framework of this hymn with its opening call to praise God, stanzas 1-3 and its concluding description of God’s providence in stanzas 33-43, are God’s mercy, steadfast covenant,
and love.
When the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving, the children were given plates with five kernels of corn to remind them of the difficult year they had endured. It was only after prayers of gratitude to the Lord for His providence that the full meal was served. This might not be a bad custom for the first course of our Thanksgiving meals. And what about asking each person around the table to talk about five things that he or she is most thankful for? What would you say? I would begin with God, Himself. Thanking Him for His blessing upon my life, my family, my church parish, and my extended friends. Then I would thank Him for Eternal Salvation in Christ Jesus, through the power of the indwelling Spirit. I would also thank Him for the sickness and affliction of which I have grown in His grace and have experienced His timely interventions. Look at each person around the table and say to each one: “I thank God for you!” As you can see, five kernels of corn are not enough to cover all of our gratitude. But conversations about other blessings (without gossip) will be more than enough to cover the entire course of the Thanksgiving Dinner and throughout the entire afternoon. Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

“The First Black American of African Descent to Attend an All White University”
J
ames Howard Meredith is a person known for many accomplishments, especially his activism in the Civil Rights Movement. Mr. Meredith was born on June 25, 1933 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. His first encounter with injustice occurred when he and his brother was riding the train from Chicago, Illinois to Memphis, Tennessee. He was ordered to give up his seat in the front of the train and move to the crowded section reserved for “Negroes Only,” where he had to stand for the rest of his trip back home to Mississippi. This experience inspired James to start his fight for equal treatment of Negroes (AKA Black Americans). After graduating from high school in 1961, James’ fight was put to the test when he applied to the All-White University, Mississippi State. He was initially accepted, but later his acceptance was rejected when the registrar found out that he was a Negro (Black American). With the Brown v. Board of Education ruling that ended segregation in all public educational institutions, Meredith filed a law suit against the University alleging discrimination and denial of an education. Although the lower courts ruled against him, he took his fight all the way to the Supreme Court. On September 20, 1962, he was given permission to enter the University, but was blocked by White protesters. President Kennedy ordered the National Guard to escort Mr. Meredith into the building to register to attend classes. On October 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first Black American of African Descent to enter a Lily White University, giving him the right to an equal education under the law. In 1963, Mr. Meredith graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Political Science. He wrote a book about his experience while attending the University, titled “Three Years in Mississippi” published in 1966. On several occasions, he ran for a seat in the U. S. Senate, but never obtained this position. Mr. Meredith continues to fight for Civil Rights and education issues through his nonprofit organization, the Meredith Institute. He is the author of several books, including a children’s book titled, Will Wadsworth’s Train to Nowhere (2010) and a memoir titled, A Mission from God (2012). Remembering people who made an impact in the Civil Rights Movement is important; but the most important thing to remember is; “What God guides, He will provide.”- Bishop Dillard. Amen!

Giving Thanks Through It All!
H
ave you ever been around people, outside your church family, where you felt like an alien? You felt like you didn’t belong in this setting or situation, even if it’s your own family! Well, I am here to tell you that you are in the right place! Sometime it can be explained as simply as John 1:5, “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” Even as people are in recovery, I see that some of them still drink alcohol on holidays. I try not to judge them; because many years ago, I use to do the same thing. Most of us know that time brings about a change. However, there are those who are stuck in an era and never seem to evolve. I have learned not to try to figure people out, or wonder why they do what they do, because they are probably wondering the same thing about me. I said all this to say, as we enter into this season of Thanksgiving, and you find yourself in the company of someone who may need your kindness rather than your criticism, allow the Holy Spirit to lead you. He is never wrong. Regardless of how you may be treated, you already know the love of Christ, and Christ wants us to show His love to those who may not know Him as their Lord and Savior. I hope this will help your tolerance level at Thanksgiving dinner, leading up to the celebrations to come. Make the best of the day, each day, for we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Happy Thanksgiving to all! God bless you with His love always,
Peggy LaBon

“INDIVISIBLE” is a movie that is based on the true life account of Army Chaplain Darren Turner and his wife Heather Turner. With a strong marriage and a sound faith in God, the Turners are ready to follow their calling of serving God, family, and country. But all of this will soon be tested by extreme circumstances. This movie will be released on October 26, 2018. I have watched some parts of it from streaming online, but the entire movie will not be available until it is released in theaters. I believe this is going to be a great movie for the entire family. If you get a chance, go see it on opening day to help make an impact to produce more Christian movies in theaters. If you do see it, let me know how you like it. “INDIVISIBLE” is bound to be a hit! Send comments to secondsnewsletter@gmail.com

The ear- liest official reference to using “Taps” at a military funeral is described in an 1891 manual. During the Civil War, a Union soldier “was buried at a time when the battery occupied an advanced position concealed in the woods.” Because it wasn’t safe to fire the customary three volleys over the grave, Captain John Tidball decided the sounding of “Taps” would be an appropriate substitute ceremony. Previously, “Taps” signaled the end of a soldier’s work day, but it has since come to honor the end of his or her earthly life. Horace Trim’s lyrics remind us of God’s constant presence: Day is done, gone the sun From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky All is well, safely rest God is nigh. Thanks and praise for our days ’Neath the sun, ’neath the stars, ’neath the sky As we go, this we know God is nigh.
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” —Oprah Winfrey
Self-Care for the Sake of Others In light of Matthew 22:39, where Jesus says we should love our neighbors as ourselves, Rozella Haydée White writes: “I believe that we are called to love ourselves so that we can love our neighbor. I believe that loving God leads to loving self. When we love self, we practice how we are called to love others. Then when we love others, we love the incarnate God. And this cycle continues, leading us deeper into love with the One who is love.” Unfortunately, many Christians have been taught that loving oneself is, well, selfish. But White understands self-care not as being self-serving but as recognizing oneself as a holy, beloved dwelling place for God. She asks, “What if God has been inviting you not just to rest but to remember that you are first called to love God and love yourself? What if living out the commandments in that order gives you boundless energy to love others?”

We all know we can’t see air with the naked eye, so to believe that it had no weight would be the logical conclusion. Galileo Galilei eventually managed to disprove this assumption with a clever experiment, but long before he did this, the book of Job revealed that God ‘imparted weight to the wind and meted out the waters by measure’ (Job 28:25). Whether or not Galileo caught wind of this and decided to test it out is up for debate!

Diabetes Awareness!!
N
ovember is Diabetes Awareness Month. Diabetes Mellitus, which is commonly known as diabetes, is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into the cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, the body either does not make enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it does make. Untreated high-blood sugar from diabetes can damage the body’s nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs. There are Several Types of Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks and destroys cells in the pancreas, where insulin is made. It's unclear what causes this attack, but about 10 percent of people with diabetes have Type 1. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin and sugar builds up in the blood. Pre-diabetes occurs when the body’s blood sugar is higher than normal, but it's not high enough for a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes symptoms are caused by rising blood sugar. General symptoms include: increased hunger, increased thirst, weight loss, frequent urination, blurry vision, extreme fatigue, and sores that don't heal. Diabetes symptoms can be so mild that they are hard to spot at first. Different symptoms are associated with each type of diabetes. Doctors don't know exactly what causes Type 1 diabetes, but for some reason, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Genes may also play a role in some people becoming diabetic, because Type 2 diabetes stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight or obese increases ones risk of becoming diabetic. Carrying extra weight, especially in the belly area, makes cells more resistant to the effects of insulin in the blood sugar, a condition that runs in some families. Since family members share genes, they may become overweight which can cause Type 2 diabetes. Children and teens are more at risk for Type 1diabetes if a parent has the condition; or if one carries certain genes that are linked to the disease.

Other Risks Factors Include: 45 years and older, are not physically active, have high Blood pressure, have high Cholesterol or high Triglycerides, and have African, Hispanic or Latino American, Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Asian American ancestry. Type 1 Diabetes is not preventable because it is caused by a problem with the immune system. Some causes for Type 2 diabetes are genes and age which are not under ones control. But other risks factors for attracting Diabetes are controllable. Most diabetes prevention strategies involve making simple adjustments in one’s diet and fitness routines. If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, here are a few things you can do to delay or prevent Type 2 Diabetes:
Get at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic exercise, such as walking or cycling. Cut saturated and trans-fats, along with refined carbohydrates from your diet. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Eat smaller portions.
Try to lose 7 percent of your body weight if you are overweight or obese. For more information and programs contact the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org or call 1-800-Diabetes (800-342-2383)

O
n Veterans Day we honor men and women who have served and sacrificed in one of America’s armed services. The holiday is also meant to highlight America’s quest for world peace and our nation’s desire for justice and freedom throughout the world — our nation’s higher goals. Veterans Day is actually rooted in Armistice Day. On November 11, 1918, America and her allies met with German leaders to sign a truce ending World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson decided that our nation should remember with gratitude the end of that war and honor those who served in the military. He called the holiday, Armistice Day. Armistice means “truce.” In his proclamation the president wrote that Armistice Day was an “opportunity … given to America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” The name Armistice Day was kept until 1954 when Congress changed the name to Veterans Day honoring veterans of every era. President Eisenhower called on all citizens to observe the day remembering the sacrifices of veterans and “the task of promoting an enduring peace.”
