anting his sons to learn not to judge too quickly, a man sent each, in turn, on a quest to look at a pear tree far away and report what he saw. The first son went in winter, the second in spring, the third in summer and the fourth in fall. Finally, the father gathered the young men together. “What did you see?” he asked. The first son reported seeing an ugly tree, bent and lifeless. The second disagreed, saying it was budding with fresh new life. The third son reported finding a tree laden with sweet-smelling, beautiful blossoms, while the fourth insisted it drooped with ripe fruit. The father said his sons were all correct, for they’d seen the same tree, though at different seasons of its life. “Don’t judge a tree — or a person — based on just one season of life,” he counseled his children. “Who they are can only be known at the end, when all life’s seasons have been lived. “Furthermore,” he added, “don’t give up on your own life if you experience a hard season, such as winter, or you’ll miss out on the renewal of spring, the joy of summer, the fulfillment of autumn.”

EXAMPLE TO SPOUSE AND CHILDREN
Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,
Bishop Wm.under La RueMy Dillard ParishDr. Flock Care, Grace to You!
M
Parish Under-Shepherd
y Love Epistle seeks to reach out to you in the midst of your struggles with spouse and/or children. What must you do for a better relationship? Listen to the message from God through the Eminent Apostle Paul to the Philippian Church: “Brethren, join in following my example, and not those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern” (Philippians 3:17 NKJV).
As you read this, you are probably thinking “How can I be an example and communicate the Holy Faith with all of my hang-ups?” Not many Christians can exhort others to imitate them (literal meaning, “to follow”). I would say to you, “If you don’t believe that what has happened to you in your relationship with God, the Father through Jesus Christ, the Son, ought to happen to everyone, then probably too little has happened to you.” Every time I read Paul’s alarming, audacious challenge: “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1 NKJV), I am reminded that Saints are to imitate the self-sacrificing example of Paul and Christ Jesus. That’s a great test of our present pilgrimage through Christian life. If we Saints are not so excited about what we have found that we want everyone to experience it, especially your spouse and children, then we have not found very much. When he appeared before King Agrippa, Paul proclaimed the winsome power of his life in Christ Jesus. Agrippa responded, “In this short time, you think you will make me a Christian?” knowing full well that Paul was seeking to have him to find the faith Paul had experienced. To this question Paul said, “I would to God that not only you, but also all who hear me today might become both almost and altogether such as I am, except for these chains” (Acts 26:29 NKJV). Here again, the same confidence: Imitate me! Can you say that at home, at work, with your friends? If not, why not? But the question which probably comes to mind as you read this is, “How can I, knowing all my imperfections, set myself up as an example?” That is to misunderstand this passage. God led Paul to be very honest about his hang-ups. What Paul wanted the Saints at Philippi to imitate was the same experience of God’s grace and forgiveness. How he handled his failures was an invaluable part of his witness. He didn’t want people to know how great he was, but how great God had been in his life. How about you? Every day people are deciding about Jesus, the Christ, by what they see of Him in us. We are writing history about our faith daily. Write well! Amen. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Shepherd

Joseph’s Love I close my eyes and reflect on your understanding, In amazement I glance at peace, The knowledge you once possessed, A race to the car, A visit at the bar-boring shop to talk with your good friends seemed important, All I can say is that I’m just like you, Athletically inclined, Broadened mind, One of a kind romantic dude, Rhythmical composer of creative activity that arouses the emotions too, Which ones? You pick!!! Look, listen, touch the verbalization you smell, This laugh and walk seemed to be familiar steps to you, Yet, they now belong to me, You never abused or used anyone else to harm your karma, That’s deep! I still feel you presence still in each tear God makes, The seed of your years linger here in the flesh with illumination, Is it right that you lied? We could have helped somehow! I’m part of your flesh also, Feminine additive ingredients included, I hope you trusted God, I do! This is a mystery to me that I will one day dispel, That your soul may take flight in heaven, My soul aches as an intermediary for you, Mom and I will be there, Alden Scott Johnson too, Man Dad, I really am going to miss you, I love you Joseph!!! n October 16, 1968, two American Athletes made history that day. After winning the Gold and Bronze medals respectively, in the 200 meter race, they decided to represent suffering humanity with a “human rights salute.” The Athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos won their medals at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Mexico. Smith set a world record in the 200 meter race with a time of 19.83 seconds and Carlos won with a time of 20.10 seconds. Both athletes received their medals shoeless, wearing only black socks to represent “Black Poverty.” Smith wore a black scarf around his neck which represented “Black Pride.” Carlos unzipped the top of his tracksuit to show solidarity with all “Blue Collar” workers in America and a beaded necklace that he said represented, “Those individuals who were lynched or killed and no-one said a prayer for; those who were hung and tarred, and for those who were thrown off the side of boat in the Middle Passage.” As the Star-Spangled Banner played, Carlos and Smith raised their black fisted gloved hands and bowed their heads, a gesture that was seen around the world. As they left the podium, they were booed. Smith later said, “If I win, I am an American, not black American. But if I did something bad, they would say, I am a Negro. We are black, and we are proud of being black. Black America will understand what we did tonight.” Praise God for these two Olympic legends who took a stand to say it loud, “I am Black, and I am Proud.” www.infoplease.com/sports/summer-olympic-mexico-ci

n the “Just For Today” by Narcotics Anonymous, the September 13 th reading was titled, “Something Different.” The reading concludes with: Just for today: My Higher Power is the “something different” that has always been missing in my life. I will use the steps to restore that missing ingredient to my spirit. This book is a daily meditation for recovering addicts to find peace and spiritual comfort in long term recovery, but it can help anyone who has an open-mind to receive the message it conveys. “Higher Power” is GOD! By any other name He is still the same. Unfortunately, many people in the world have a distorted and misinformed view of Who God is, and many Christians don’t help. If someone does not know God (as their personal Savior) and we brow beat them with “you better get saved and filled with the Holy Ghost or you’re going to hell” that may cause one to reply “we are already in hell,” or some other negative response. So my Christians brothers and sisters, let’s show the world Christ as He presented Himself; filled with compassion, loving kindness, and helpfulness. Eventually they may want what you have, and the Holy Spirit that lives in you will show you how to invite that person to Christ and He will live in them too. Blessings to you all,
Peggy LaBon

Jekalyn Carr, is next in line to
be recorded as the most dynamic young Gospel singer of her time. Carr literally burst onto the scene in 2013 with the poignant and powerful Billboard Top 5 single, “Greater Is Coming,” as an independent artist, which showcased a vocal ability and intensity far beyond her 15 years. “Greater Is Coming” captured the attention of Gospel listeners across the country and positioned Carr to take her rightful place on the national stage. Since her debut, Carr has wowed audiences with her dynamic singing and preaching, with two nationally distributed albums already under her belt. Setting the stage for The Life Project, is the prolific lead single, “You’re Bigger.” Penned by Allen Carr, who also wrote “Greater Is Coming,” “You’re Bigger” is a declarative proclamation of faith that is sure to impact the lives of all who hear it. While “Greater Is Coming” encouraged millions as Carr asserted the promises of God, she shifts her focus to an audience of one with “You’re Bigger” by singing to God. Carr proclaims, “You’re bigger than the universe. You’re bigger than the things that could tear me apart!” This worshipful ballad hails Gods sovereignty and reminds listeners to set their sights on the true and living God. “You’re Bigger” is slated for release in early 2016, and if early responses and testimonies are any indication, will pave the way for Carr to speak into the hearts and lives of all with whom she comes into contact, and all over the world. A simple message, filled with an unwavering truth, creates an unyielding assurance.

K
ubo and the Two Strings is a movie about a boy who accidentally summons an evil spirit from the past and this evil spirit wages war against Kubo (Art Parkinson). While on the run, Kubo joins forces with a Monkey (Charlize Theron) who happens to be his mother, and a Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) who is unaware that Kubo is his son and Monkey is his beloved bride from the past. Even though this is an animation fiction movie, it reveals some real truths about evil spirits and principalities in high places. One evil spirit is Kubo’s own grandfather. I won’t reveal the plot, but one can see the parallelisms of how evil spirits work in the world today. A good movie to watch with the entire family! Sorry, it can only be seen in theatres for now.

12th Annual Healthy Living for LIFE and Healthy Families aturday, September 17, 2016, SET for LIFE 12 th Annual Healthy Living for LIFE fair was held on the campus of Second Baptist Church, Monrovia, to encourage families, young and old, to make healthier lifestyles choices.
Through educational workshops, health screenings and other resources, SET for LIFE/ FAMILIES hope to reduce the damaging effects of preventable diseases and the high mortality rates of African Americans, Asians, and the Latino population due to cancer and other diseases. African-Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial/ ethnic group in the United States among cancer related diseases. Although a small grassroots 501 c 3 nonprofit organization, SET for LIFE/FAMILIES spearheaded the healthy living fair concept more than 12 years ago in the Monrovia/Duarte area to reach out to ethnic minorities. SET is operated and managed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors that include; Ariel Tolefree-Williams, Betty Thomas, Emelbra LeBlancRedd, Venda Hawkins, Carrie Walker, Susan Wang , Sophia Yeung, and Patricia Duff Tucker. Some of the comments heard at the event were; “It's so organized. I like that.” “If you have this again, please let me know.” “There is such a positive spirit in the air.” “We really need programs like this for women’s health.” “I am glad there is a place for men to discuss their health.” A very special “Thanks” to the Patron Saints Board of Directors. Through a competitive process, SET successfully submitted a grant prepared by Twyla and Tinisha McDonald, and the Board to launch a youth health initiative to provide a special workshop for teens. The grant also provided internships opportunities for Sumayya Aasi, Diane Kim, and Essence Brown. We are grateful to all of our sponsors and In-Kind donors, volunteers and everyone who worked with the Board to reach our community. Other sponsors included; City of Hope, Second Baptist Church, California American Water, American Cancer Society and Wells Fargo Bank. Special thanks go to Alinea Imaging for bringing their mobile mammography van with only 24 hours’ notice to provide free mammograms. Alinea definitely understands the importance of: Every Woman Counts! The Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley truly helped to make the set up the easiest ever. Thanks to the City of Hope employees: Peggy Mancini, Jonjon Macalintal, and Katty Niero who led various workshops on nutrition, lung cancer and teen body image and health. In honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, SET for LIFE/FAMILIES joined the Laymen’s League of SBC to present a special “Men Only” workshop. Dr. Roosevelt Anderson led this packed workshop. Alisha Madison (AARP), Martha Gamboa (Yaya Fitness), Robbie Alexander (Dragon Fire) and Mother Love also shared their expertise. Thanks to Azusa Pacific School of Nursing, Western University Health Sciences, City of Hope Lung Cancer Screening, Smoking Cessation Program, and East Valley Community Health Center for providing health screenings. And thanks to the many local and regional organizations who came out and shared available and valuable resources with the community. Can Coffee and Other Food Lower Cancer Risks
M
ost Americans drink at least 1 cup of coffee a day; and many feel like they cannot face the morning without it. So wouldn’t it be great if coffee helped to protect us from cancer? There are in fact, some reasons to believe it can.
Coffee is brewed from beans that contain antioxidants, which are thought to have a protective effect against cancer. Researchers have conducted more than 1,000 studies, looking at this question with mixed results. But in some of these studies, the benefit was found in people who drank 4 to 6 cups of coffee a day, which is a lot. Too much caffeine can interfere with sleep, trigger migraines, and cause digestive problems. And if you take your coffee with cream and sugar, the added fat and calories can contribute to weight gain – which increases the risk for many types of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the surest steps any of us can take to lower cancer risk are: don’t smoke, eat well, and be physically active; and if you want to consume more antioxidants, consider adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet. Vegetables and fruits are rich sources of antioxidants, and studies show that people who eat more of them may be helping to lower their cancer risk. Fish is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. Studies in animals have found that these fatty acids may stop cancer from forming or slow its growth, but it is not clear if they can affect cancer risk in humans. Garlic and other foods in the onion family may be included in the variety of vegetables that are recommended for lowering cancer risk. The term "organic" is widely used to describe foods from plants grown without adding artificial chemicals and foods from animals raised without hormones or antibiotics. There is some debate over whether organic produce may have higher nutritional levels than conventionally grown produce. But at this time, there is no evidence that such foods are more effective in reducing cancer risk or providing other health benefits than similar foods produced by other farming methods. Juicing can add variety to the diet and can be a good way to get amounts of vegetables and fruits needed, especially if chewing or swallowing is a problem. Juicing also helps the body absorb some of the nutrients in vegetables and fruits. But juices contain less fiber and may be less filling than whole vegetables and fruits. Fruit juice in particular can account to quite a few calories if a lot is consumed. Commercially juiced products should be 100% vegetable or fruit juices and be pasteurized to kill harmful germs. Vegetarian diets can include many health-promoting features. They tend to be low in saturated fat and high in fiber and vitamins; and do not include eating red and processed meats. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that vegetarian diets may be helpful in lowering cancer risks. Whether vegetarian diets offer any special benefits against cancer over diets that include smaller amounts of animal products than are typically eaten in Western diets is less clear. All in all, make wise choices and live healthy!

The Earthly Power of Four
I
n 1921 Arthur W. Pink posed the question, "Why Four Gospels?" In seeking the answer to his question he revealed these interesting properties of the number four:
•"Four" is the number of the earth - the world. • There are four corners of the world or four points on the compass - north, south, east and west. • There are four seasons in the earth's year spring, summer, autumn and winter. • There are four elements connected with our world - earth, air, fire and water. • There have been four great world-empires - the Babylonian, the Medo-Persian, the Grecian and the Roman.

• Scripture divides earth's inhabitants into four classes - "tribe, language, people and nation" (Revelation 5:9). • In the "Parable of the Sower" (Matthew 13), seed is scattered onto four types of earth - path, rocky, thorny and good soil. Later Jesus said, "the field is the world." • The fourth commandment tells us to rest from all earth's labors. • The fourth clause in the Lord's Prayer is, "Thy will be done on earth." • If four is the number of the earth, then it is quite fitting that there are four Gospels in which to set forth the earthly ministry of the Heavenly One. -Based on Why Four Gospels? by Arthur W. Pink

C
ongratulations to this year’s Acts of Faith Bible Challenge Champion, John Phillip Harris III, who marked the 2nd Annual AOF Bible challenge and brought a tougher level of competition, as well as experience gained from the first AOF Bible Challenge. With that said, seven of the eight finalists were returning players which raised the bar, enhanced the competition, and kept the contestants focused.
Season Two AOF Bible Challenge playoffs was exciting and rewarding for the students who participated. Each Ministry to Children facilitator (Diakona Larry Willis, Dr. John Harris, Diakona Ron Husband, and Miss Kathleen Dantzler) provided detailed information about several accounts of faith centered on theme Scripture, Hebrews 11:1. The AOF Playoffs Finals was held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 and welcomed the first Brother and Sister Finalists. John Harris came into the playoffs as a fourth seed after suffering a loss to Kayvaghn Leary in last year’s “nail bitter” semi-finals. His sister, Jaylyn Harris second seed in this year’s playoffs was also knocked out of the Semifinals last year due to personal obligations. The Brother and Sister duo went back and forth answering questions on faith from stories such as: Jonathan and the Armor Bearer, Gideon’s Army, Joshua and the Battle of Jericho, Jonah and the big Fish, and Abraham and Moses, to name a few. This year’s competition featured a series of questions that revolved around songs sung by the children throughout the year, all affiliated with Acts of Faith from the Bible. It is safe to say that in order to win this competition, you have to be knowledgeable about Acts of Faith, but also quick on the draw to hit the buzzer. As the last question was presented, the audience (all children in attendance that day) drew quiet, the pressure was on. The question was asked and John’s buzzer sounded first; he answered this question: “How many times did Joshua march around the city of Jericho?” which led him to his very first Acts of Faith Bible Championship! Shout out to Jaylyn for being such a good sport and competitor and stated in the post-game interview that, “If I had to lose, I would rather lose to my Brother.” Jason Jenkins stated, “I am proud of John for winning his first AOF Bible Championship. Jaylyn is a tough competitor.” Final comments came from John who stated, “I had studied a lot and dreamed about winning the AOF Bible Championship. I can’t believe I beat my sister, she never loses.” So the 2016 AOF playoff has come to an end and the leadership is excited about what’s to come. Each year has brought an extravagant display of Bible scholars from our very own children of SBC Ministry to Children. Our focus now turns to the 2017 AOF Bible Challenge, which will be one for the ages, consisting of up and coming members: Darren Rogers, Makeo Green, Katherine Thomas, Keleigh Holmes, and Nyla Keys; and the AOF 2016 Champion and Runner-up: John and Jaylyn Harris. To God be the Glory!!! Dr. John P. Harris Jr.
