Janelle Lenise Franks The Millionaire Reader Award

Congratulations!! To Janelle Lenise Franks, granddaughter of Diakona Val and Brother Donnie Burwell, who recently earned the Millionaire Reader Award at Barranca Elementary School in Covina, Ca. She earned the award because she read 155 books totaling one million words during the 2019-2020 academic school year. Janelle is 8 years old and in the second grade, and her teacher is Mrs. Guzman. This award is the highest, biggest honor at Barranca Elementary. Janelle started reading last summer and let nothing stand in her way of reaching her goal, and certainly not a quarantine. For every book Janelle read, she was required to take a quiz to ensure she understood and comprehended what she read. She consistently earned scores of 100 percent and 90 percent on her reading quizzes. Janelle, was the fifth millionaire reader in her classroom to receive this honor for the 2019-2020 school year. When Janelle reached millionaire status, she received a congratulatory phone call from her school Principal Kimberly Sheehan, and was featured on Barranca's Instagram page. Mrs. Guzman, Janelle’s teacher, created a short video on her Instagram page congratulating her as well. Janelle couldn't have reached this goal without the support of her parents Hurby and Dina Franks, who helped her select books, celebrated her successes and cheered her on all the way! To reward her for a job well done, Janelle received a Barbie doll and a WWE Championship belt because she is truly a reading champion.

Way to go Janelle!

An Invitation to Rest

ummer calls to mind a slower pace, time off from school and work. But many still face daily demands this time of year: farmers work long hours; teachers may take seasonal work to make ends meet; parents with kids now home all day may catch up on work late at night. Still, may the longer days and warmer weather beckon you into a bit of free time this season. Listen:

“When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” —Eleanor Brownn (public speaker and educator) “Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential … to make sure that your most important decision in the day [is] which color to slide down on the rainbow.” —Douglas Pagels (author) “Rest time is not waste time; it is economy to gather fresh strength. … In the long run, we shall do more by sometimes doing less.” —Charles Spurgeon “Come to me, all you that are weary … and I will give you rest. … For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” —Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30)

There is ROOM for YOU!!

Mental Health-Let’s Talk About it ... Vanessa Dinsay Jenkins MSN, PMHRN-BC, PHN, RN

W

hat is mental health, and why is it important? Well, let’s talk about

it… we hear it day in, and day out to take good care of yourself, eat well, sleep well. But, how often do we focuse on our mental health? Sure, we all know about the physical health, but do we really take good care of our mental health? We know the importance of a healthy diet and exercising to promote a healthier lifestyle but, how often do we consider taking care of our mind. Well, this is a hot topic, and many of us take very little time to focus on our mental well-being. Life as we all know it is full of obstacles and as people we are always juggling what life gives us. Whether it’s working full-time, going to school, providing for your family, or even providing for yourself, mental health can have an overall impact your productivity, and effectiveness at work, school, and home.

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (2019), mental health includes a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It is the foundation for the way a person act, think, or feel. Mental health helps to determine how a person can handle stress, relate to others, or make choices. So, what’s important to understand is that many factors contribute to mental health problems. These factors may include genes, brain chemistry, biological history, trauma, abuse, and family history of mental health problems. People who struggle with mental health must know that help is available. If you or someone you love struggles with mental health problems, recovery is possible and mental health services are available.

Understanding early warning signs are important, if you or someone you know is living with mental health issues; some signs to be aware of are:
