The South East Coast Normalising Birth programme focuses on developing ways of working within delivery units to encourage normal birth for all women. Through normalising birth for all women, and the resultant reductions in caesarean section rates, there is potential for cost savings to be realised and reinvested into services. The tool shown here was designed to allow users to quickly and simply estimate what a reduction in caesarean section rates would mean for that organisation in financial terms if the caesarean section rates had been a specified percentage lower over the course of two years. Users are able to model their chosen percentage reductions by using a slide bar at the top right of the tool. Potential savings are expressed in the yellow panel on the right in pounds sterling but an additional pictogram chart shows an estimate of what this equates to in terms of band 6 midwives, assuming savings are reinvested. The two charts show actual and remodelled overall caesarean section rate against regional and WHO recommended target rates, and the costs associated with both of these, by quarter over a period of two financial years.
