The South East Coast Normalising Birth programme focuses on developing ways of working within delivery units to encourage normal birth for all women. The programme has a focus on two specific groups of women based on their clinical features; first time mothers (group 1) and women who have had a previous caesarean section (group 5). Reducing rates in these groups should impact significantly on the overall caesarean section rate, but it can be difficult to understand how and to what extent. The tool shown here enables users to model their preferred rates in groups 1 and 5 using slide bars at the top of the tool. The tool then calculates what this means in terms of reductions of numbers of sections over a twelve month period and an estimate of what this equates to on a weekly basis. Identifying the numbers of sections that need to be ‘prevented’ on a weekly basis to achieve the preferred rate is more meaningful for midwifery and other clinical staff, and gives context to the modelled reductions. The impact on the overall caesarean rate is shown in a simple bar chart with current rate and remodelled rate displayed.
