Ryan Student Wins Rs. 24 Lakh Scholarship

Mumbai: Ryan International Group of Institutions, one of India’s largest Education providers with over 120 institutes in India and abroad, announced a Rs. 23,50,000/- (GBP 25,000)one year Scholarship in UK for Mst. Harshal Karle.

Harshal, a striker started playing soccer at the age of 8yrs and his passion led him to join St. Augustine School, Nerul. Since then he has garnered many laurels. Of course, its not all soccer with Harshal, in academics alsohe has consistently scored over 75% marks. Ryan International is the first school in the country to offer a soccer scholarship of this kind. It is a part of their Sports Initiative to help deserving students.

During his stay in UK, Harshal will be hosted by Brookhouse Academy. He will be guided by Mr. AnishKhinda, Chairman, Sports Esprit Academy. In addition to being coached by select EPL coaches, he will also attend school. A detailed schedule will be created to help Harshal learn advanced footballing techniques and help hone his skills.

Now for one yr I will be there learning from the coaches, Wow.” Asked how he prepared for the selection camp, Harshal said: “I used to watch videos of Brook-house on YouTube and learnt how they work.” He said he also picks up the nuances of the game by watching Gareth Bale’s and Cristiano Ronaldo’s videos. “I am a big fan of them,” he added.

Indian Model United Nation (INMUN) 2013

Indian Model United Nations (INMUN) 2013 conference was officially inaugurated with the theme “Take a STAND” with a grand Opening Ceremony at Scope Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi on 8th August 2013. The Ryan International Group of Institutions under the direction of Founder Chairman, Dr. Augustine F. Pinto and MD, Mrs. Grace Pinto, provides various national and international platforms and forums for students to have an opportunity to get an insight into what happens outside the academic boundaries and INMUN is one such mega platform. The conference provides a platform to collaborate and network to overcome differences and conflict in order to resolve modern-day problems of socio-political and economic dimensions.

About a thousand aspiring students from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore and from countries Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Niger came together to debate and negotiate and find the best way forward to peace and progress through dialogue and discussions.

One of the remarkable aspect this year was that although at present India and Pakistan are going through a diplomatic crisis, children of both the countries meet for a peaceful tomorrow at the Indian Model United Nations 2013.

India Still In Shackles Myron J Pereira S.J. mong national festivals around the world, Independence Day usually takes first place. The birth of the nation, its shaking off of colonial oppression and its melding of many ethnic groups into one modern state is cause for unity and celebration. As India celebrates its 66th birthday on August 15, it’s also an occasion to ask those most pressing of questions: Has independence made a difference? How has freedom changed Indians? Have they realized the hopes they had?

These are not easy questions to answer. Looking at the broad picture, one can see two contradictory movements in almost every area of life. On the one hand, India as a nation can celebrate the rise of the ordinary person, the aam aadmi; on the other, we see the almost total failure of the sarkar, the ruling class.

The words of Indian author and intellectual Gurcharan Das are memorable: “India grows by night, while the government sleeps.”

Examples of this abound: after centuries of control, education has at last been democratized, and learning opportunities have opened up to tribal people, outcasts and women, and with it, a greater share in the local leadership and administration. At the same time standards of education are in decline almost everywhere, universities are in disarray, and in many places there’s violent hostility towards girls going to school.

For once, the country can feed itself, and the “green” and “white” revolutions have changed the countryside. Consumer marketing has changed ways of eating, dressing and living.

Yet government food controls have made malnutrition a chronic problem for the poor. Farmers’ suicides are pandemic. Deforestation has brought drought to most regions. Hunger and landlessness have driven large scale migration to the towns and cities. The slum is a symbol of our times.

Most of all, the changes are economic. Most Asian societies were feudal and static, wedded to some form of subsistence economy. No longer. Today money has become the chief arbiter of social relationships, and it is the traders and financiers who dictate the development of the nation, not the landed aristocracy. Black money – the parallel, underground economy -- generates more wealth, employment and investment than the official one. No wonder that that’s where today’s youth long to be.

And what of the ordinary Indian -- the man in the street, the woman by the kitchen sink?

For one thing, he and she are more aware. He is more literate, much more

India Still In Shackles (Contd.. from p. 3) street smart. She watches TV and drinks in the world, even if she doesn’t understand all of it. He looks upon politicians and netas, the political leaders, with veiled contempt, but realizes they are as indestructible as sewer rats. She moves about with others at the communal tap, even mixing with “those people, not like us.” Most of all, she has hopes and dreams her mother never had.

One fact, which strikes you everywhere, is the rampant corruption. Like a fungus, it grows everywhere. Independence has produced a kind of Indian who is grasping, manipulative and exploitative. Traditionally Indians preened themselves on their spirituality and high moral purpose. Every day, each new scam shatters this hollow claim.

Even more, we Indians realize that there is a dark and violent anger which exists in the national character, and which periodically explodes – in communal riots, in the slaughter of Dalits, the torture of prisoners, the dowry murders, the female infanticides. The anger comes from not getting what we desire soon enough, and even more, from having to share the little we have with those we despise as our inferiors.

In fact the crucial task of making life better for millions of Indians has faltered in the hands of successive governments, who now merely use their electoral privilege to loot the public treasury. Propaganda may promote the image of an “India Shining”, but a sober assessment of the future holds but “an uncertain glory”.

So have we realized our hopes of 1947, when we made our famous “tryst with destiny"?

Not all of them certainly, else we wouldn’t be looking more and more like “islands of California in a sea of sub-Saharan Africa”, to use the picturesque phrase of Indian economist and Nobel Laureate, Amartya Sen. The challenges before us are not political liberty any more. Rather, they are equality and fraternity – community.

"The tri-color national flag that we have hoisted today signifies sovereignty, liberty, unity in diversity," said Rai, the state forests and Dakshina Kannada (DK) district-in-charge minister.

He said his government, which came to power replacing the pro-Hindu BJP government, hopes to take Karnataka onto progressive path by implementing pro-people policies and introducing peoples’ welfare programs.

The several pro-people program that are being introduced in the past two months shows the concern of state government towards the common folks, he said.

Minorities’ welfare cell has been launched in taluk level and city centers in order to organize aware programme among minority community.

A new project has begun to provide financial assistance to girls from minority community to get married.

The talented students of minority both SSLC and above will be provided with scholarship.

The state has earmarked Rs 676 crore for the development of minority community and Rs 100 crore for the development of Christians in the recent budget, he said.

Mahatma Gandhi national employment guarantee program will provide steady job to rural people, to empower laborer, SC/ST, assurances to financial support for minority community and for the least in the society.

In order to bring about equality, the government is committed to provide housing plot, infrastructural facilities, healthcare facilities, education, security to lead peaceful living by devising laws and maintaining discipline, the minister said.

The Body And Blood Of Christ Some weeks ago, in Venezuela there was a call for the Churches to ration wine. The report was silent on whether there was general rationing of alcohol in the country as well. Since no Church in engaged in any commercial activity and that too in wine, it is safe to assume that the call related to the quantum of wine used at the Eucharistic table. While it would be unfair to assume that the congregation is also given a sip of wine along with the Holy Communion, this practice is prevalent at least in some of the Churches in the United States. This must be done in many other countries as well.

Closer home, the same practice was followed in Delhi Churches [whether it continues till date is not sure] when the BJP ruled Delhi while the NDA ruled the country. The Delhi administration wanted to withdraw the tax exemption given to the Churches there on the plea that since the wine is served to one and all and not at the sacrificial table alone; it has forfeited the right for exemption but the then Prime Minister, Atal B. Vajpaijee had to intervene to get the order rescinded keeping the sensitivity involved in mind. Whether such inclusive governance can be expected from the next BJP Prime Minister, is a very difficult guess. Vajpaijee, it was rightly said, ‘was a right man in the wrong place’.

While on the subject, why is wine [even host dipped in wine] served along with the host, selectively and not throughout the universal Church.

At least in Mumbai the faithful have to be content with the host alone, except the First Communicants and those who say “I Do” at the altar, which is understandable. Why are we, the commoners, only served the body and not the blood of Christ? In matters of faith there should be no discrimination. It is hoped that the Pope, who has already taken various initiatives, will bring about uniformity in this all important ritual of the Catholic Church. Incidentally, instead of bread, host which is more like a wafer biscuit is used. Can we

The Country Is Heading Nowhere With the present dispensation at the helm of affairs in the country, we are going nowhere. It is said and wisely so “If you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there”.

The UPA came to power in 2004 and the people hoped that the Government will deliver with some of the best brains at its disposal. No doubt, 2008 heralded one of the worst financial crises due to global melt-down. Despite constraints, the country was doing fairly.

Things began to drift in the post CWG era and today we are in a one big mess – thanks to the most inept handling of the economy. On every front the Government has failed. The Government seems to have resigned to its fate of losing power in the next elections. The body language of those who matter does not inspire the people of this country that they have the will and the wherewithal to steer the county from the situation.

The failure is not only on the economic front but also on foreign policy as well as defence matters. We have antagonized almost all our neighbours.

No neighbour of the country has a good word for us whose support is always vital at international forums. For this situation, some regional politics has to be blamed. Take the case of Sri Lanka. The Tamil Nadu politicians in their race to out-do one another went overboard on the issue of allowing their players in perform in the State. Mamata Banerji played spoilt sport when it came to sharing waters with Bangladesh and putting the PM in an embarrassing situation. The opposition wants the Government to blame Pakistan for everything under the sun.

The PM Manmohan Singh is not a master of his own destiny. He is not alive to the aspirations of the people.

He should take a leaf from the Norwegian PM Jens Stoltenberg who became

[DIS]UNITED STATES OF INDIA With the announcement of the formation of Telangana State carved out of Andhra Pradesh, the Government of India has invited more trouble for itself. The calculation has gone horribly wrong in that region itself. To make matters worse, it has opened the Pandora’s Box with disgruntled politicians from a number of other States simultaneously demanding division of States. The cry for statehood is very real in Bengal and Assam while it is subdued in UP, Maharashtra etc.

The calls will become shriller by the day.

How the government, which already has its hands full with other national issues, is going to handle this delicate situation will test its governing skills. The opposition parties are happy that they have more ammunition to pin the UPA government down.

The problem is likely to escalate and the government will be hoping that it will be able to contain the situation till the next elections leaving the new government to face the heat. Of course this will be a litmus test for the new dispensation which may form the government in 2014. The UPA may feel relieved, at least on this score.

Mr. Hakim in his address said that "the Christian community is at the fore front in educational, medical services. They are also a great support to the downtrodden and neglected citizens. They honoured me with flower and coconut. By doing this they reminded me my greater responsibilities. As the flowers come with thorns and the coconut is hard and may be used to hit on ones head I may now have to act with much alertness, care and greater responsibilities to serve the minority community".

The newly apponited Vice Chairperson Mrs. Janet D'Souza, receiving after the honours said that 'She believes that she is given this responsibility predominantly to serve the Christian community. Hence she said she will be

there whatever, whenever and wherever the Christians face any problems and will give utmost attention to solve them". Mrs D'Souza is also the Director of Maulana Azad Minorities Development Financial Corporation (Govt. of Maharashra)..

Konkani, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and Warli groups performed during this occasion. Welcome dance was performed by the students of Thomas Baptista College.

Warli Group presented "Kadimod and Tarpa Dance". Malayalam group presented "Thiruvathira" dance. Tamil group presented "Bharat Natyam Dance". Hindi group presented harvest festival dance. Marathi Group presented "Koli Dance".

Konkani group lead by Vasai Konkani Welfare Association presented dances showing the importance of Konkani, Vovyo, Vers, Vhor and other Cultural celbrations during Roce, Wedding ceremonies, Baila, Dekhni, Dulpod, Mando and othe cultural dances. The programme was produced

Archbishop Felix in his presidential addressed said that it is very nice to see the various cultural groups mingling each outer in my diocese. Such cultural programmes that help strengthening the inter-culural bonds, need to be held often to build the community spirit. It acts like adding sugar in the milk.

Crazy Doctor I was SHOCKED to read the article "Why we need to Oppose Organ Donation" (SC 12th August, 13) by Dr Leo Rebello. If I am not mistaken this man has harboured ambitions of being the President of India. Thank God that he isn't. Rebello has opposed organ, cadaver (body) and blood donation, and even vaccination! What kind of a doctor is he? Such archaic and convoluted thinking should find no place in a respected journal like the Secular Citizen. Let me counter Rebello's various statements: ORGAN DONATION: He alleges that it results in medical murders, but has given no proof or data in support of the same. He also claims that the donee dies in 1 to 5 years. I disagree.

Here in my hometown Kanpur a Catholic woman donated her kidney to her young daughter suffering from renal failure. That was more than 15 years ago. Both mother and daughter are doing fine. In fact the daughter herself is today a microbiologist doing research on cancer cells. Surely there are millions of people around the world who have received a new lease of life through organ donation.

BLOOD DONATION: As one who has donated blood about 50 times, and saved at least one life through it, I am astounded that a doctor should oppose it. Surely he knows that blood is checked clinically before it is transfused to the donee. Talking of karma, personality traits etc being transmitted through blood transfusion has no scientific basis whatsoever. This man is anti social. He's crazy.

VACCINATION: How can a doctor oppose vaccination, which has spared millions from debilitating diseases? Small Pox has been eradicated through vaccination, and now polio is almost eradicated through the same process. Killer diseases like Hepatitis B are also controlled by vaccination.

CADAVER DONATION: This is a voluntary act. What is wrong with it?

Both my wife and myself have pledged our bodies after death to the local medical college for research. In fact there is body donation movement in our city of Kanpur that has been so successful

Uphold The Fundamental Right Of Expression

that we are now sending cadavers to other medical colleges in the vicinity.

Donating one's body after death is the final gift that one can give to mankind.

Readers need to know that Dr Grey is considered the father of Anatomy, and his book "Grey's Anatomy" is every anatomists guide. Dr Grey did his research on his own mother's body, as cadavers were not available for medical research.

I hope that in future articles like Dr Rebello's will not find a place in the Secular Citizen, as they could easily mislead gullible readers.

Sadly, St. Joseph Chapel in Bazaar Road, Banda (West), does not have basic amenities for the priests who celebrate Holy Mass, and swelling congregations gathered for praise and worship.

I appeal through your esteemed magazine to move the powers that be to install minimum basic amenities in this holy place.

This will elevate the celebration of Clergy Day from mere tokenism.

As an Indian I was proudly a part of the country’s 67th Independence Day celebrations to express the joy of being an Indian, a country where I have the right to speech and expression. My joy dwindled as I read the report of threat to our Ranchi Christians by the majority community, forcing them to remove the statue of Mother Mary dressed in Tribal attire. It pained me and I wonder whether in this beloved country of mine; Christians who are in minority, truly have the freedom of speech and expression? Theologically, Cardinal Toppo is not wrong in unveiling this beautiful statue which fits so well in the Church’s teaching.

The Sarna Christian community members of Independent India have been granted freedom of speech and expression and they have every right under the constitution of India to install their beloved mother Mary dressed in their tribal attire. No one; a community nor an Individual has the patent over any cultural dress.

The Christian community needs to stand up for this issue at the local as well at the national level (CBCI) and should not brush it aside as a trivial matter, else opponents will have an upper hand with other issues too.

For long the Christian community has remained quite, facing the brunt and false accusations from the majority rule. It is disgusting to know that the “majority rule” has threatened the Church authority. Today the attack is on the pretext of this issue, tomorrow it will be another and someday there will be threats for using Indian symbols and signs in the Indian Liturgies. This archaic mentality need to be curbed.

Demand for Pothhole Free Road in Mumbai

On the eve of the Independence Day, the members of Watchdog Foundation along with the Citizens of this City celebrated the Independence Day in unique manner after attending the National Flag hoisting ceremonies in our respective areas, the members over 200 assembled on the footpath at Marol Naka i.e. junction of Andheri Kurla Road and Marol Maroshi Road, Opp. Fire Brigade, Mumbai Suburban Head Quarters, Marol, Andheri ( East ), Mumbai 400 059, on 15th August 2013 at 11.00 am sharp, demanding permanent freedom from pothole ridden roads in entire Mumbai.

Altar-servers Sodality Initiated At St. Mary’s

Saint Mary’s Church, Ripon Street, Calcutta, celebrated Altar-Servers Day on Sunday. The church was well attended. The altar was decked with flowers and looked resplendent with the altar-servers, the three priest-celebrants and the choir at the far-side of the altar.

The new sodality of altar-servers was graced with over forty boys and girls in special red and white dresses. They were each presented with a cross on a ribbon and those who deserved credit for outstanding service at the altar were given gifts. An appropriate blessing was part of the happening. The altar-servers made a pledge to do their best in service and to be regular in their attendance.

The Ambassadors For Jesus and the AFJ Catholic Women United were represented by Founder Melvyn Brown who congratulated the children, said a few inspiring words on the event and thanked Fr. John Mohandas, the parish priest for his dedicated spiritual and pastoral work in the parish, also for having established the Altar-Servers Sodality in a move to enrich the new evangelization in the parishes. This will be a significant moment in the history of the church on Ripon Street.

Melvyn Brown spoke on behalf of the AFJ and presented Miss Angela mbrose,11 years old, with a Citation for her pious devotion and dedication as a server at the altar (see photos). The parish priest gave a warm word of thanks to the children. Fr. Mohandas requested parents in the congregation to encourage their children to come forward and join the sodality. He said the sodality was dedicated to Saint Dominic Savio, the patron saint of altar-servers.

Young Ashton Domingo, 4 years old was called up to the altar along with his father to be blessed on his birthday.

The choir sang ‘Showers of Blessings’. Later refreshments were given to the participants and their parents. It was a day to long remember.

Praiseworthy is the word. “I imagine nothing more could have been done to make the Altar-Servers Day a better success,” said a proud mother, and most notably, 40 children in the event was a pastoral triumph.

Raksha Bandhan --- A bond of love

aksha Bandhan is a festival cel ebrating the bond of love be tween a sister and a brother, which falls during the holy month of Shravan, on the day of the full moon in the month of August. ‘Raksha’ means ‘to protect’ and ‘bandhan’ means ‘bond’.

On this day, the sisters tie a decorated thread on their brothers’ wrist to signify their love for them, while the brothers promise to protect and take care of their sisters for the rest of their lives.

The traditional Indian festival of Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated this year on August 21. Earlier, this festival was wrongly understood as a woman subjugating herself before a man as a lord and master.

In an era which is marked by Movements for Women’s Liberation and Rights, Raksha Bandhan can be celebrated as a festival that promotes brotherly-sisterly concerns and appreciates the complimentary gifts of a man and woman.

Over the years, gifts have begun playing an important role in the festivities, with money, clothing and sweets being offered and exchanged. The thread that is tied is called a ‘rakhi’, and so, the festival itself is referred to as ‘rakhi’ in some parts of the country. The tradition of a sister tying a rakhi on her brother’s wrist began with the widowed Hindu queen, Rani Karnavati, who sent a rakhi to the Muslim Mughal Emperor Humayun, to seek his help in battle.

Today, many centuries later, the woman is still being considered as an object of sexual gratification and subject to man. The celebration of Raksha Bandhan can help us to remember that God created man and woman as equal and complimentary partners and so a woman has every right for respect and dignity.

Goan Church Seeks Justice For Poor Panaji: The Church in Goa has demanded that the poor, marginalized and vulnerable should be the primary beneficiaries of all government facilities for potable water, sanitation, food, maintenance of good health and integral education.

The demand came in a press release as the Church observed August 18 as 'Justice and Peace Sunday," the Times of India reported.

The Council for social justice and peace (CSJP) in the archdiocese said that people should ask the government to fulfill a number of demands; these include the demand that the fragile environment and ecology from the Ghats to the shoreline of entire Goa are fully and physically protected, preserved and promoted, banning all projects that disturb and

destroy our natural wealth.

The government should ensure that the economy of the state is used for healthy and necessary development of all civic facilities for the citizens and that no funds are directed for the benefit of only those in power.

The government must ensure that all traditional occupations in Goa, especially agriculture and horticulture are encouraged, promoted and maintained with financial assistance where genuinely necessary.

Those guilty of violating the rights of the citizens in all aspects of justice, freedom, communal harmony and equality are condemned as well as encouraged to reconcile and begin a new life in society, stated the CSJP press release.

Mr. Ito took the machine to the Marshall Islands. With this machine, one kilogram of plastic waste is converted into about one liter of oil, which can run a car.

Learning that waste is transformed into oil, there was a sea change in the attitude of the people living on the islands. People began to sort and collect waste rather than simply disposing them. Children take the lead and pick up waste. A mountain of plastic waste has become a mountain of treasure.

Plastics to Oil: The New Energy

Every home faces the problem of plastic waste and taking it to the recycling center each time is not very feasible. In an attempt to address the issue of plastic waste, Akinori Ito has designed an ingenious machine that converts plastic waste back into usable oil. Christened the “Blest machine”, this safe, clean and most user-friendly machine make use of a temperaturecontrolling electric heater to bid goodbye to the plastic, making the planet a better place to live.

Akinori’s present tabletop model is available for $9,500 and is capable of converting one kilo of plastic into one liter of oil.

Plastics are already widely recycled to create new products ranging from playgrounds to carpets and clothes, but the latest recycling trend is to turn plastic waste into synthetic crude oil.

How can plastic become oil? People often forget that most plastic is derived from natural gas. Plastics, natural gas, and petroleum are all based on carbon molecules. Using pressure, heat and proprietary processes, plastic polymers can be “depolymerized” or broken back down into their original components. The process is highly innovative, yet relatively simple. In one process, on average, eight pounds of plastic waste will create one gallon of synthetic crude oil, which can be used to produce gasoline or diesel fuel.

“Gaby and the prison ministry team were immensely thrilled upon receiving the letter written by Francis. From the Vatican to the prison!” the priests said.

They noted that ever since she began serving her sentence, she has endured typical hardships of female prisoners, such as harassment and mistreatment.

Our Queen And Our Mother

ccording to the Roman Catho lic Calendar on August 22nd of each year we celebrate the feast of the Queenship of Mary. The Latin title in the Roman Missal is “Beatae Mariae Virgins Reginae” (Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen). It is one of the earliest titles of Mary that finds expression in the New Testament. The feast of the Queenship of Mary was inaugurated by Pope Pius XII to be observed on the 31st of May. In the reforms of the liturgical calendar, which followed the Second Vatican Council, this memorial was replaced with the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Now, more appropriately, the Queenship of Our Lady is celebrated on August 22, exactly one week after the Solemnity of Our Lad’s Assumption. Thus, this annual observance takes on the air of an octave, the ancient practice rooted in Judaism of celebrating significant spiritual events over an eight –day period. Often, this eight day was marked with great solemnity as the climax of the observance. How fitting, then to celebrate the Queenship of Mary on this date.

When Mary went Nazareth to Ein Karim (in Judea) to meet her cousin Elizabeth she greeted Mary who came to help her during her pregnancy with John the Baptist, she referred to Mary as “the Mother of my Lord” which is an Old Testament expression of queenmother. In recognizing Mary as the Mother of our Lord, Elizabeth was the first person in the Gospel of Luke, apart from Mary, to express faith in Jesus, as Son of God and Savior.

Mother of God The Queen ship of Mary is first based on the fact that she gave birth to the Son of God, who took His flesh from her so that He might redeem us. The Greek title Theotokos, meaning Mother of God, a title formally given to Mary at the Council of Ephesus in 431, refers to this great privilege and dignity. It is one of the four dogmas of our faith that relate to Mary. The motherhood of Mary

She now has the mission of leading all her children to Jesus. When Mary was assumed body and soul into Heaven, she was formally crowned by her Son as Queen of Heaven and earth so that she could exercise her Motherhood at His side.

The New Eve

Capt. Mervin John Lobo at first seems impossible. How could Mary be the Mother of God? And yet this mystery becomes possible by the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, humbling Himself and taking on flesh and becoming man through the power of the Holy Spirit in Mary.

But Mary is queen in another sense. Jesus Christ, her Son, is the Savior of the world who offered His life to pay the debt of mankind’s sin and to overcome the evil one. As God, Jesus has every right to be King of all creation and all humanity. Mary’s Queen ship flows from the honor given by her Son, the King, and by the new role she received at Calvary. Prior to her Son’s death on Calvary, Mary gave birth to, nursed, cherished and raised her Son with her most chaste spouse, Saint Joseph. When Jesus began His public ministry, she became His most devoted disciple. At Calvary, Jesus named Mary our Mother, and from this moment forward she takes on a new role concerning all the disciples of the Lord.

Mary is Queen because she is Mother of Jesus Christ and also because by God’s will she played a unique part in the Savior’s role of redemption.

Mary was the only human and sinless disciple standing on Good Friday at Calvary beneath the sinless innocent Lamb of God, whose death would deliver us from eternal death and the power of the evil one. She offered her Son to the Father for the salvation of the world. In a profound way, she becomes the new Eve, who is the Mother of all the living, who have found true life from Jesus.

Mary’s queenship embraces all humanity. No one is excluded from her love and care. When Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of Mary’s Bodily Assumption into Heaven in 1950 he noted “like her Son before her, she conquered death and was raised body and soul to the glory of Heaven, where as Queen she sits at the right hand of her Son, the immortal King of the ages.”

As Queen, Mary dispenses the graces which flows from her Son’s sacrifice on Calvary. She was given by Jesus the power to know all the needs of each person. She loves each person God creates with a maternal and divine love rooted in her Son. No created human being loves us like Mary love us. Her love is pure and joy-giving. Her love is focused on what God wants. Her love call us to become like her Son. Mary’s love, when we welcome it and embrace it, helps us to reach sanctity, as Saint Louis de Montfort taught in his writings.

“Where was God when I was raped? I was just a kid! Where was He when I was being abused – raped again and again? Where in the hell was He? What was He doing?” (pp 18, 19) Imaginary questions, you think? No! Just sordid reality! Indeed, if there’s one criminal offence that has been topping the crime graph in general for quite some time now, it is “rape”. Rape per se, given its connotation, is a subject that is taboo, affecting as it does members of both genders—something one would much rather sweep under the carpet than talk freely about.

This book dares to tackle the subject head-on, with real life victims of this inhuman act testifying, ordinary folk you’d rarely notice as you pass them on the street, yet real humans who’ve been hurt in life and wonder why.

The story of Thomas’ childhood rape experience is true inasmuch as he, Sarah and Karen (names changed), the protagonists of the book’s narrative which may read at times like a short story, at other times like a novel, are real, living human entities who were introduced to pain and suffering early in life, raped as they all were before they BOOK REVIEW were even ten. Apart from these cases, the author also shares what he himself by Ladislaus L. D’Souza has learned about God as he faced the good and bad in his personal life, the untimely death of loved ones, and the prognosis of having barely a couple of years to live as a result of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). All of this is poignant in that they are living composites of nameless individuals who have experienced rape and are left to deal with the inescapable conundrum: If God is really good and all-powerful, with the world itself in His hands, where is He and what is He really doing when we, innocents, fall victim to merciless evil or random tragedy? Indeed, in a relationship with God, one does need to know where He is during dark and devastating moments. The truth is, God IS, and is WITH us! But the way He is with us and is involved in the kind of life we live every day in a world of messy kitchens, matchbox sized houses and oversized corporate boardrooms may be different from our individual perception. Again, it is one thing to believe that God does not send us bad things but something else to know where He is and precisely what He is doing when such things do come our way. That is what this book attempts to tackle though, of course, it is definitely not a defence of God. It takes a hard and practical look at tragic and evil events, apart from easy notions and centuries-old well-defended religious thinking.

A word of caution: If you expect to find the answer to the question of good and evil in these pages, you will be disappointed. As such, this book is not for everyone, for some may find it too blunt, filled with too many questions and not enough answers, the answers themselves rather demanding. Others may find it a tad irreverent, questioning doubts a believer ought never to have. At times, it is easier to live with unexplored myths than to live up to the kind of faith demanded of us: the kind of faith that triumphs against all odds, radically changing your outlook on life and changing your own life for the better.

Experiencing God’s Presence is about both sides of that mystical reality: becoming increasingly aware of God’s abiding presence and feeling Him up close and personal. The first is what is often referred to as “practicing the Presence of God”—that is, tuning in to the knowledge of His nearness. The second is, so positioning ourselves as to make that knowledge a reality in our lives and thus literally cherish His nearness. The book will help surface in you the attitudes and expectations that would prepare you to encounter Him and enable you to explore the various levels and degrees of His Presence and ways to experience “more” of Him.

Our Queen And Our Mother (Contd.. from p. 15) Catholic population hasn’t exalted Mary as their Queen? Queen of Brazil, Queen of Poland, Queen of Ireland, Queen of France, Queen of Portugal, Mexico Spain and so on and so on… For that matter, how many parishes through out the world have been placed under the patronage of Our Lady as Queen of the Universe or Queen of Peace? More so, how many congregations throughout time have adorned her images with crowns during special Marian devotions. All seem quite comfortable with adding the title “Queen” to the long list of our Lad’s personas. Even Sacred Scripture seems to support the exaltation of Mary’s royalty. Through the images in the Book of Revelation of “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars” (Rev.12:1) refers to the Church as the exalted Mother of all the faithful, scholars both scriptural and Marian have not hesitated to see the image and role of Mary portrayed as well in this symbolism.

Light of the World In St John’s theology we are invited to view the Cross as Christ’s Throne. It is from the Cross that He gives life, beautifully symbolized by the blood and water which from flow from His side. We know this double outpouring symbolizes the life giving Sacraments and realities of Eucharist and Baptism respectively. Further emphasizing this bestowal of life, Christ has given Mary as our Mother a few lines earlier in the account (Jn.19:26-27). In this moment and gesture we behold a “birthing.” Christ becomes the New Adam and Mary becomes the New Eve who together generate eternal rebirth, eternal life. St.John thought, Christ truly merits acclamation as King of Kings.

Any earthly monarch or head of state can take a life by decreeing death.

But there is only one Monarch who can give life. Rightly, then, He deserves to be called King of Kings…. And the Cross is His Throne from which He bestows that life.

Let us look closely at Mary, the

woman beside her son’s Cross, beside His throne. She is the woman He associates with Himself in this (so to speak) “birthing process,” the conferral of life eternal on all who believe. How then should we refer to her participation in this moment of Redemption? If John sees Jesus as King, can we not see Mary then as Queen? The woman beside the throne, called there by Divine Providence, by the King Himself, clearly is invited by the King to share in His mission and thus in His royalty.

My mind returns to the Book of Revelation, to the “woman clothed with the sun.” Here we behold Mary as the one closely identified with her Redeemer son. As the light of the World, from His throne/Cross, He dispels the darkness of sin and death, Mary eternally is associated with this triumph of Light over darkness. As we behold this Queen, so too, we behold our King.

Highlights of New Companies Bill

DB University Christian Students Forum Keeps Fresher’s Social

GUWAHATI, (C.M. Paul) — The Assam Don Bosco University’s Christian Students Forum kept its fresher’s social on Sunday 18 August 2013. The three hour function organized by the senior students consisted of songs and dances, musical drama and selection of the Miss & Mr. Sunshine.

“When this first Catholic University in India started (in 2008) we had only 10 Christian students. Today after five years we are about 250 Christian students,” recalled ADBU Controller of Examinations Dr VA Cyriac in his opening words welcoming all to fresher’s social.

“The CSF is not only to uphold our Christian identity, but also to set an example,” said MCA 3rd semester student Judy Antionette in her welcome speech reminding all the purpose of the forum, Giving a detailed activity report of CSF, Br Anbarasam B. of Civil Engineering 3rd semester said, “the chief activity of CSF is helping students keep and nourish their Christian
