Italian Archbishop Says Polluters Can Not Receive Communion Italy: Archbishop of Naples Crescenzio Sepe didn't mince words when speaking about the issue of pollution on Wednesday, going so far as to say, "Those who pollute are not in the grace of God and can not take communion." His remarks came in the wake of revelations that local mafia had buried cancer-causing toxic waste around the city, posing a health risk to residents, reports Adnkronos. He told journalists at the 10th International Forum of the Christian environmentalist group Greenaccord, "Our people

have to be told the truth about what has happened. But it is also necessary to talk about all the positive things that have been done. It is time for everyone to unite and continue to free our earth of poisons." Care for creation is something that Pope Francis has previously tweeted about, stating: "Care of creation is not just something God spoke of at the dawn of history: he entrusts it to each of us as part of his plan." This isn't the first time that clergy have banned people from taking communion due to their stance on social issues. In September, chief justice of the Vatican Cardinal Raymond Burke announced that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi should be denied communion due to her support of the right to have an abortion. Sepe added that he had ordered local priests, deacons, and lay brothers to be conscious of the Church's role in public ethics, Adnkronos reported.

Goa Catholics to accommodate 2,000 delegates in their homes Panaji: In an effort to strengthen small Christian communities (SCCs), over 2,000 delegates from across the country will share a roof with Goan Catholic families in a unique intercultural bonding. The occasion is the first-ever SCCs national convention to be held in a pandal outside the Basilica of Bom Jesus fromNovember 19 to 21, with Goa's scenic ambience and cultural heritage as a backdrop. The guests will start arriving on November 17 and 18 and head straight to their "homes" in various parts of the state. "We hope they will enjoy our hospitality for which we are famous and carry back a good image of Goan people," says John Paul Noronha, a parishioner. The Noronhas, like many other families in the state, will host a delegate in their Aldona home. "Goa has 150-odd parishes, but not all will host them due to various reasons. Still, we are trying to ensure that as many families as possible can accommodate guests across the length and breadth of Goa so that many may benefit from the historic event," says Fr. Anthony Fernandes, executive secretary, diocesan pastoral secretariat. The Catholic Church in India sprawls over 164 dioceses. "Each diocese headed by a bishop will send its leader and 20 representatives. At the moment, 120 dioceses have confirmed their participation," says Fr. Fernandes. The mega event is being organized by the national service team for SCCs under the guidance of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI). A total of 8,000 delegates from dioceses as far as Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Gujarat to Tripura will converge in Goa to live in small communities. "SCC is a grassroots movement of the church that endeavors to build caring and serving neighborhood communities, like the early Christian communities. This paves the way for the establishment of small communities bringing about national integration," explains Fernandes. Fr Leonardo de Souza, convener of the diocesan organizing team for the convention, says that "religion is not the only activity of the soul, but it is the whole being that matters and how we interact with others and grow in the neighbourhood". (Contd.. on p. 4)

3

(Contd.. from p. 3) "SCCs translate to better bonding in the neighbourhood," he says. Preparations for the mega event began a year ago, but the excitement and apprehensions of playing host to national delegates emerged recently. "This will be a great experience for us, as the event is being held for the first time in India, and in Goa, after over 40 years of SCCs. Though they may be from different regions, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ and we belong to one community," says Noronha. The interesting assemblage of cultures has attracted many families to volunteer as hosts. "I feel this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and agreed to host a delegate in my family," says Albert Fernandes, a teacher from Saldolxem. Agreeing with him, Maria Helena Souza, a resident of Calangute and moderator of the diocesan pastoral council, says, "We are privileged to have people of different cultures, speaking different languages to live with us. It will help us reconnect with God and our fellowmen." The parish of Curtorim is abuzz with preparations, as it will play host to 200 delegates. "It is a blessing to be chosen to host the delegates, as we will learn from each other and our faith will grow," says Cynthia Clemente, a local resident. Many families had misgivings about accommodating strangers, but these were easily dispelled by church leaders and moderators. "We will definitely learn something about their culture, although conversing with them may be difficult due to the language issue," adds Clemente, whose mother is excitedly sprucing up the house in anticipation. In Sadolxem, parishioners have agreed to share responsibilities. "They will provide meals in turn to guests," says Albert. Goa's church leaders are viewing this event as a unique opportunity. "It is not only about an experience to the Church in Goa, but also to the state of Goa to showcase its rich natural, cultural and religious heritage," says a church leader.

In US, Spain and Italy, the Pope is Making Bishops Re-think

Vatican City: Pope Francis is showing that he has very clear in his mind both the battles that he wants to fight and those for which he sees no need to do so. Both "ad intra," meaning within the ecclesial body of which he has become the supreme pastor - and in the Roman curia in particular - and "ad extra," in the world. With regard to the latter, pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio has said loud and clear, in the interview with "La Civilt? Cattolica," that he does not see as a priority the battles over anthropological issues like the questions “connected to abortion, homosexual marriage, and the use of contraceptive methods. This undoubtedly constitutes a change of stance with respect to the last pontificates: not only of Benedict XVI and of John Paul II, but also of Paul VI, the pope of “Humanae Vitae" and of the strenuous resistance against the introduction of divorce in Italy. It is a change of stance, this of Pope Francis, who although he has not yet eliminated even one iota of doctrine has nonetheless raised widespread expectations among the more progressive sectors of Catholicism around the world. But it is also a change of stance that has backed into a corner those episcopates - of Italy, of Spain, of the United States - which in the past were considered models in their way of addressing on the public stage the an-

thropological challenges present in the contemporary world, but which now find themselves singled out as "scarcely in line" with the new papal leadership. In Spain, one signal has come from an editorial on the website "Religi?n Digital" that begins with this rhetorical question: "Is the Spanish hierarchy in harmony with Francis and with the new wind that is blowing from Rome?"... In the United States, the liberal magazine "National Catholic Reporter" has emphasized the extent to which the words pronounced by Francis against "the current pastoral 'obsession' with gay marriage, abortion and contraception" manifest an "imbalance" between the pope and the U.S. bishops that goes so far as to "undermine" also the vigorous campaign for religious freedom undertaken by the latter ... In Italy, finally, in the newspaper "La Stampa" the vaticanista Andrea Tornielli has presented it as a certainty that with Pope Francis comes "the end of an era" ... The Spanish, the American, and the Italian therefore seem to be three episcopates under fire, in this new ecclesial season. The effects of this new situation, unimaginable until eight months ago, will soon be apparent. Source: chiesa.espressonline.it

Facts And Fiction No matter how much you want to keep the BJP PM-in-waiting Narendra Modi out of the news, it is difficult. There is not a day when he is not around on the media. He has become a nomad with no fixed domicile. You see him everywhere except where he is supposed to be. I thought he is still the Chief Minister of Gujarat. We can all understand that he has been catapulted into a position where every body in the BJP [no matter what they think of him privately] has been made subservient. That includes the grand old man. How things change! A few months back he was seeing himself as next man at 7 RCR but today he is resigned to his fate. Good for the BJP. Narendra Modi has been talking non-stop and when you do that you are bound to miss your facts. People feeding the data appear to be incompetent. You may say a thousand things to score brownie points but when you make a mess of verifiable facts [not those which can be manipulated] you cut a very sorry figure in the eyes of the public especially the new generation whom you have targeted to win the elections. The ISI remark by Rahul Gandhi was blasted by Modi but RSS and Shiv Sena find it appropriate. Modi blasts the Godman who dreamt of gold only to backtrack later. To make things worse, there is no gold. He is ignorant of Taxila being in Pakistan and not Bihar. He may want to wage a war to get it back if he becomes the PM. Confusion between the Gupta and Maurya dynasties, is also laughable. Comments on Ad-spend by Congress on Vallabhbhai Patel were also proved wrong. The ‘khooni panja’ comment is also bad in taste. By the way who carries that ‘tag’ really? If national leaders constitute national legacy [and not only of Congress party] why has Modi not thought of erecting statues of nonGujarati leaders in Gujarat? What about the Muslim leaders like Maulana Azad? Will he raise a memorial for him too? *****

VIEWS on NEWS Parish Portability? We are living in an era where portability is being introduced in many fields. One can choose his/her service provider for the mobile phone without any problem. Similarly, one need not stick to the electricity provider. You have an option of choosing the other. Instead of Reliance one can switch over to Tatas. This facility will get extended once Savings Bank account portability will be a reality. There are moves to even allow the LPG gas users to move away from the one that had initially provided the connection. How very convenient! All this is done to give the consumer a wider choice. By this no consumer can be held to ransom by the service provider. If one is dissatisfied, he/she has an alternative. In the past, one had to suffer in silence. This is now history. The dawn of the new era for the consumer has brought about hope. If portability can be allowed in the aforesaid areas, should the Catholic Church also not consider it for implementation? At present if a parishioner is unhappy with the Parish [no matter whose fault it is] he may find it odd to attend Mass and also take active part in that parish. He may even find it odd to receive Communion at the hands of that Parish Priest. Such disgruntled parishioners prefer to be seen at neighbouring parishes and in the process they are Stateless [Parishless?], neither here nor there. Should the Church not allow parishioners to register themselves at any parish of their choice instead of strictly adhering to the geographical boundaries? This will be a step in the right direction in the context of freedom of choice which is so important in a democratic set-up. To simplify things the parishioner can make a written request to the new parish. Once such a request is received, the new parish can inform the old one requesting it to delete the records there. Once this is done, the transfer can be complete. It is worth

Opinion Polls It is said that only parents of intelligent children believe in genes. In fact they like to talk about it to other parents as well. Likewise, the political parties which find the opinion polls flattering feel that publication of opinion polls should not be banned or curtailed. Understandably, for them it is a feel good factor which serves as a pep to their cadres. By contrast, parties which find the opinion polls disturbing are not in favour of opinion polls. They seem to have taken cover under the Election Commission’s stand on the issue. They have sought opinions / comments from all political parties. For the public it does not really matter. Voters are generally well informed especially the educated ones. They will not be swayed by the trends dished out by TV channels. Like debates etc, this is part of the exercise. On the contrary, it may actually help a voter to take an independent line. As far as the illiterate voters [with no offence meant to them] opinion polls do not really matter. They do not understand the implications hence will not be influenced. Politicians have been trying their best but the electorate is not carried away. There is no unanimity on the subject. Parties across the country have divergent views on the subject, not necessarily based on their ideologies but on exigencies. Ideally, the decision should be left to the Election Commission to take a call on the issue, keeping the fairness of the electoral exercise in mind. Once the decision is taken, all should abide by it. They have restricted exit polls already.

US Military Joins Race To Aid Devastated Tacloban US military planes Monday joined a frantic effort to rescue famished survivors of a monster typhoon that may have killed 10,000 people in the Philippines, as local security forces struggled to contain looting. Three days after Super Typhoon Haiyan flattened entire towns across the central Philippines and left countless bodies scattered across wastelands, desperation was building with devastated communities devoid of food, water and medicines. "We want an organized, coordinated brigade to collect the dead bodies, bring food and stop the looting," said Joan Lumbre-Wilson, 54, who was among a large crowd of people gathered around one of the few relief centers in the ruined city of Tacloban. "It has been four days. We want water and food. We want someone who will help. We are emotionally drained and physically exhausted. There are many babies and children who need attention," she said. Haiyan generated waves up to five meters high that surged inland like a tsunami, the walls of water destroying nearly everything in their path along

huge stretches of coastline throughout the central band of the archipelago. About 10,000 people are believed to have died just in the eastern province of Leyte, of which Tacloban is the capital, according to the region's po-

lice chief. Philippine authorities have been overwhelmed, their efforts to quickly deliver aid hamstrung by the destruction of airports, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Many areas remained cut off from any relief efforts, leaving bodies to rot in the humid atmosphere and survivors little choice but to rummage through the carnage for food, water and other essentials. The scale of the disaster continued to unfold on Monday, with aerial photos of Samar island where Haiyan first made landfall showing whole districts of coastal towns reduced to piles of splintered wood. Haiyan's sustained winds when it hit Samar reached 315 kilometers (195 miles) an hour, making it the strongest typhoon in the world this year and one of the most powerful ever recorded. The governor of Samar said 433 people were confirmed killed there, although this was widely expected to be an underestimate.

`Congress over BJP for Jamiat leader, Cardinal ` This report in the Hindustan Times - Oct.22,2013 , is misleading and mischievous ,at least in reference to the Catholic community .(pic.Secular Citizen ,Oct.28,2013 ). Erroneous conclusions were drawn by the HT correspondent Mr Haq from the CBCI President Cardinal Oswald Gracias ` obvious courtesy call on Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, while he was in the capital, and his reported expression of "appreciation of the `key role` played by her in `caring for the poor and downtrodden` ", to signal the community`s preferred choice of the party she heads , at the hustings. If it is true, as reported, that the Cardinal Archbishop of Mumbai , expressed support for the UPA`s welfare programmes ,he was merely endorsing pro-poor programmes and policies practised by the Church in its long history.By no stretch of the imagination can it be taken to mean anything else, for several reasons: we, Catholics are not issued a`fatwa` in favour of any party ,nor would it be obeyed if we were, simply because we believe in free will and free choice .Secondly, Catholics, unlike Muslims ,do not vote en bloc and the surest proof of that is , thankfully, the lack of appeasement of our community because we do not represent a vote bank. Lastly and most importantly, the fact a Government led by a Party which has been in power for 60 of the 66 years of the country`s existence , still requires to pass laws to feed and secure 60+ % of the poor struggling to survive below the poverty line, tells its own story, which will definitely not be lost on all INDIAN voters regardless of their community affiliations. —Bernie Tellis, Bandra ( W)

Three More Weaknesses to Conquer 18 November 2013

Empty Promises

TJ Burdick’s article, “Seven Weaknesses for Today’s Catholics”, The Examiner, 12 Oct 2013, rightly comments: “I do not believe I am the only one struggling with these”. He probes 7 intra and inter-Christian approaches and dispositions: 1) Spiritual Direction 2) Divine Office 3) Discernment 4) Not appreciating priests and deacons 5) Praying with others 6) Examining conscience, 7) Sharing (or creating) anything Catholic on your social media feeds. To each weakness he gives a Biblical quote and a brief commentary. He ends his essay by urging us to think, pray, decide and act. May I also add three more weaknesses or frailities that humanity is prone to; and must strive to overcome. I will refer to the Scriptural quotes only, and leave the responses to the readers. 1) Addictions: “Live by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh— works of the flesh are obvious… drunkenness, carousing and things like these” (Galatians 15:16,19,21). 2) Sexual sins: “Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure person has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ” (Ephesians 5:5). 3) Gossip: “They are not merely idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not say” (1 Timothy 5:13). Thus, to negate and offset these shortcomings we must build up our inner strengths through Christ! St Paul gives us some remedies: “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Timothy 6:11) —Dr Trevor Colaso

With reference to the letter in your secular citizen dated 23rd September 2013 on the subject empty promisesJubel Dcruz has distorted facts. In fact there is a lot of development during the Congress rule & we have become one of the leading powers in the world today.Corruption is there in our country & the BJP was rooted in Karnataka for the same reasons .It is unsecular .Catholics are wise & they know whom to vote for & do not seek advice from the clergy or from Mr Jubel for whom to vote.Being a secular magazine you should publish secular & not bais articles in your columns. —E. Devastation of Philippines With the terrible destruction of property and loss of thousands of lives in Philippines, due to dreaded cyclone storms, the country is facing a grave crisis of great magnitude. But while we had similar one in Odisha, last month, the coverage was 24 hours and had minimum loss of life. Sadly, our media gave least coverage of the tragedy in Philippines. Now, the church, which rose to help of Kedarnath/Uttarkhand disaster affected people, (though Non- Catholics) will it rise to the situation to help a Catholic country to overcome the loss? I am sure they do. —George DSouza Orlem,Malad West.

A Rare Phenomenon

Jurisprudence is the study of fundamental legal principles. Jurisprudence is the science in so far as it deals with the knowledge of the law and legal principles and in so far as the term 'science' can be used broadly to include within its scope any systematized study. Sciences are (1) natural, and (2) Social. Sociology includes so many subjects and the human sciences its scope. Law is (1) God-made and (2) Man-made. God-made law expounded through prophets. Manmade law may be classified into moral law, Civil law, international law, criminal law, etc. The lawyer has an important role to play on the stage of human existence.

How religious can public oaths and prayers be? US Supreme Court ponders petition to remove overtly Christian content

The Supreme Court struggled Wednesday (Nov. 6) with a case that asks whether government bodies can open with prayers that some people find overly religious and excluding. From their lines of questioning, it’s unclear whether the court is ready to write new rules on what sort of prayer falls outside constitutional bounds. And more than one of the justices noted that just before they took their seats, a court officer declared: “God save the United States and this honorable court.” Few court watchers believe the justices will rule all civic prayers unconstitutional — the nation has a long history of convening legislative bodies with such language. Rather, the question raised by Town of Greece v. Galloway is how sectarian these prayers can get. Justice Elena Kagan brought the issue into focus by asking what should happen if the court had opened with a different religious reference, one offered by a minister called up by the

18 November 2013

chief justice who asked everyone to bow their heads and said: “We acknowledge the saving sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. We draw strength from his resurrection. Blessed are you who has raised up the Lord Jesus. You who will raise us in our turn and put us by His side.” Many of the prayers offered at the opening of town council meetings in Greece, N.Y., outside Rochester, have been similarly worded. For eight years, they were delivered only by Christian clergy, who sometimes asked attendees to stand and bow their heads, and frequently invoked Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Two town residents — Susan Galloway, who is Jewish, and Linda Stephens, an atheist — sued over the prayers and lost in federal court in 2011, arguing that the town had violated the Constitution’s Establishment Clause, which prohibits government-sponsored religion. But they won in 2012 at the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled that the town’s approach to public prayer amounted to an endorsement of Christianity.

Pope's compassionate embrace for severely disfigured man

Vatican City: At the end of the Nov. 6 general audience in St. Peter's Square, Pope Francis drew attention by warmly embracing a man who suffers from a rare disease causing neuronal tumors all over his body. The man was identified as suffering from neurofibromatosis, which causes great pain and can result in impaired vision, learning impairnment, and even cancer, according to non-profit research group Mayo Clinic. Treatment of the condition is very complicated. People with this disease – which is genetic and not contagious – often face discrimination because of their appearance. As he carried out his typical greeting of pilgrims at the conclusion of the general audience, Pope Francis paused for several minutes to receive the sick man in his arms. Moments later, he took the man’s face in his hands, kissed him, and gave him a blessing. The gesture is the latest in a series of actions by the Holy Father that have drawn attention for their warmth and affection towards the marginalized in society. Previously, the Pope made headlines by visiting imprisoned youth, responding to letters with personal phone calls, and inviting the local homeless to dine at St. Peter’s Square.

THE BRIDAL JEWELLERY Given the whims and fancies of the Indian brides, it has become hard to determine bridal jewellery trends reigning in current wedding season. Every bride wants to look extraordinary. It is important to consider a few things while buying jewellery. The bridal getup ought to be coordinated and colours should not jar with each other. A daytime wedding require lighter and neutral shades to make her look natural, while a night wedding needs a dramatic look.

Vatican gives firm thumbsdown to 'seers' of Medjugorje

The Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) has instructed the Catholic faithful not to participate in events in which the "seers" of Medjugorje promise apparitions of the Virgin Mary. For years, the group of people who have reported visions of the Blessed Mother at Medjugorje have made public appearances in churches, announcing in advance that "apparitions" will take place. Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller, the prefect of the CDF, has called for an end to church sponsorships of these events. In an October letter to the US bishops, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the apostolic nuncio in Washington, conveyed a message from Archbishop Müller, "that clerics and the faithful are not permitted to participate in meetings, conferences or public celebrations during which the credibility of such 'apparitions' would be taken for granted.” In his message—which was addressed to Msgr. Ronny Jenkins, the general secretary of the US bishops' conference, to be distributed promptly to American hierarchy—Archbishop Vigano reminded the bishops that the CDF is currently investigating the reported apparitions at Medjugorje. Until the Vatican renders a final judgment, the CDF has asked for acceptance of a statement issued in 1991 by the bish-

10

ops of what was then Yugoslavia, who said: "On the basis of the research that has been done, it is not possible to state that there were apparitions or supernatural revelations." Although Archbishop Vigano's letter to the US bishops was not made public, the message had an immediate impact. After the service, the couple traveled to Pune where they attended a similar event at Kirkee cemetery.

Pope Francis Shows His Funny Side

Vatican City: The Pope showed he has a sense of humour as well as a caring side today when he donned a red nose at the wedding of members of a charity that uses clowns to cheer up children. Pope Francis appeared at the Vatican to congratulate the newlyweds from the Rainbow Association Marco Iagulli Onlus who were getting married there. As the pair came down the steps, he took the opportunity to show his support for the charity by donning the universal symbol of comedy. Francis is fast becoming well known for his informal manner, which has landed him in situations that would have been unthinkable to his predecessors. He has opened an account on the popular photo-sharing site Instagram, posed for selfies with worshippers after mass and, just seven days ago, barely batted an eyelid when a youngster leapt on stage at the Vatican.

‘Walking The Talk’ In Panvel Fr. Felix installs biogas system on church rooftop by Dr Emmanuel D’Silva; Email - ehdsilva@yahoo.com For several years now, through his GEM e-newsletter that reaches over 20,000 readers, Fr. Felix Rebello has been promoting the twin ideas of waste segregation at source and converting organic waste into energy. In July 2013, his attention was drawn to a new article: ‘Where There is a Will, There is a Way.’ In the article, I had described how Fr. P.J. Joseph had reached a decision to set up a biogas plant at this retreat house in Panchmarhi, a hill town in Madhya Pradesh. This article inspired Fr. Felix to go for biogas at his new church in Panvel, an hour by train from Mumbai. The Panvel priest recalls: “It occurred to me that if kitchen waste can be converted into biogas, it will not only solve some of the problems we were having in composting; the church could also save some money on the LPG cooking gas.” Fr. Felix acted immediately. He wrote to me expressing interest in setting up a biogas plant and invited me to visit his new church. So with Narendra Jindal, an expert on biogas and a friend for over three decades, I visited the St. Francis Xavier church and polytechnic institute, opposite the Panvel railway station. After some discussion and walk around the site, we suggested that the biogas system be installed on the terrace of the church building. The date for installation was set for September 14. Once the two PVC tanks of 1,500 liters and 1,000 liters were delivered, Narendra and a local plumber set to work. By sunset, the installation was complete. About 150 kgs of animal dung and 150 liters of water were poured into the digester tank to start the anaerobic process of gas production. Methane gas began to flow into the church kitchen, a floor

18 November 2013

Fr. Felix standing near the Biogas System on the church roof top below the terrace, for the first time on October 5.Fr. Felix and his cook, Alex, were jubilant. Says Fr. Felix: “Though I had heard and read that waste can be converted into cooking gas, now that I can see it, I am convinced that going in for biogas was environmentally and economically a good decision.” With a capacity of 1.5 cubic meters, the biogas unit cost Rs 26,500. The two PVC tanks were purchased for Rs 14,500; labour and miscellaneous charges amounted to Rs 3,000. Narendra and I waived the consultancy and installation fee of Rs 8,000 and donated a new biogas stove. These costs are expected to be recovered within four years from the substitution of four LPG cylinders per year. The financial rate of return, estimated at 14.8%, makes it a good investment. Fr. Felix hopes the story of the biogas plant will inspire his parishioners and other Panvel residents. He has big plans: waste water recycling, solar lighting, and terrace gardening. He wants his church terrace to serve as a model for a ‘clean and green Panvel.’ Bishop Dominic Savio will officially inaugurate the new biogas plant

and a workshop on ‘Energy from Waste to Save the Environment.’ Both events will be held at the St. Xavier’s Community Centre, Panvel on Sunday, December 22 at 10:30 am. All are invited. For details, contact 2745-5556; mobile 98 691 13757.

A Brief Exploration On Writing The Short Story

S

ome of the world’s best short stories had been inspired by true-life events. Stories have been created from special moments of unexpected happiness, or a state of shock; most others from fear, ugly desires, a chronic illness, inflation, joblessness or the threat of an exploding population, about activists, inadequate education, tourists, growing poverty, stories. Nothing has to be a repeat. declining respect for women, the old, ‘Perspiration’ does the trick. Your driving spirit to write and see crime and corruption, the widening gap between peace and violence, not for- the light of print comes from the monastery 0f your mind. The literary mongetting from the spark of love … After the ancient passage of oral astery nesting in the corridors of your history and the cave drawings in ex- life and destiny, finding release when pressing fables and sagas, the fairy you scuttle out of its domain and give expression to your nonnetale romance for children gotiable love for the short began the world’s first writstory. Technique matters in the short triumphant. The fairy tale short story was mastered centuries later, polished story. No one cuts a chunk of raw meat and presented to young readers and and throws it on the dining table. When you sit down to write think craft of the short story. There are basically only twenty-one plots in all works of the story’s point of view : will it be told of fiction. The theme of boy meets girl, in the third person omniscient, the first and girl meets boy : boy loves girl but person narration, the third person in girl ignores him … At this point let us the story ? For all practical purposes the length of a short story must have a cut off point at nine to ten thousand words. The second golden rule is the application that all stories should have a Beginning, a Middle and an End. You have the liberty to twist and turn the plot, the incidents, the characters and even the mood of the story, the crisis of fate, withdraw or rewind, but always remain focused and choose your words. The modern short story has become a culture issue. It has reached the pinnacle of expression for this generation, but will change with the passage of time. The short story is an icon for literary workmanship. Study the art and craft of the short story by reading the masters. When you do get down to writing do not imitate, create. Do not be like Bollywood to copy Hollywood. Be original. Be dynamic. Be yourself and trust in ‘perspiration’ and inspiration. It’s what you have to offer which will pick you out of the madding crowd. Flummox the reader but make him feel at the end it was worth the ride. So, what are you waiting for ?

Makeup Tips For All Occasions 6. Lips: Go for a neutral shade of tinted lip gloss which should be subtle enough for the office look. Gloss looks more natural and fades away more evenly than lipstick. It lasts longer and more easy to re-apply, in case you need it, during the day. However, if you like using lipstick, go for medium tones, such as brown, mochas or peach shades. Avoid shimmer shades on lips. Avoid tones like beige, taupe or earthy tones that look muddy in office lights.

DO YOU KNOW? History of Banks Banking can be traced back to medieval and early Renaissance Italy in cities like Florence, Lucca, Siena, Venice and Genoa. One of the famous Italian banks was Medici Bank, set up in 1397. The earliest known state deposit bank, Banco di San Giorgio was founded in 1407 at Genoa, Italy. The oldest bank still in existence is Monte dei Paschi di Siena (1472), headquartered in Siena, Italy

Here are the best makeup tips to give you an appropriate look 1. Cleanser / Face Wash: To start with, apply good quality cleanser and rinse your face.

2. Toner / Astringent (Optional): It is a good idea to use toner or astringent to clean away any leftovers of the cleanser, so that it does not get chance to block your pores.

3. Moisturizer: Makeup looks better on healthy and hydrated skin, so consider applying non-greasy moisturizer with SPF-15.

4. Eyes: Glittery eye shadow colors are a big no-no. Consider using light conservative colors, such as medium brown or black-brown shade to get a softer look. Don’t try to show your blending skills.

5. Cheeks: Consider using earthy gold tones for cheeks to look neutral in fluorescent lights. Pink shades are no-no for office makeup. Women with dark skin tone can consider browns, terracotta and maroon shades.

Live A Worry Free Life

S

tress is a major problem for many people — a hectic, stressful job, a chaotic home life, bills to worry about, and bad habits such as unhealthy eating, drinking and smoking can lead to a mountain of stress. If your life is full of stress, like mine once was, there are some simle things you can do to get your life to a more manageable level. Now, your life will probably never be stress-free — I don’t think that’s even desirable, even if it is possible, because stress is something that challenges us and helps us grow. At a reasonable level. But when stress gets too high, it causes us to be unhappy and unhealthy. It wasn’t that long ago when I was working long hours in a very stressful job, with little time for my family, smoking and eating fatty foods and not exercising. I had a lot of debt and too many bills. I was unhappy and stressed out all the time. I was losing hair … OK, actually that was because of genetics, but still. I was pretty stressed. So I made some drastic changes. I quit my job. I simplified my life. I quit smoking and started exercising and eating healthier. I began to eliminate my debt. And I learned some habits that, when applied on a daily basis, can really transform the way you live, in a positive way. How did I do all of this? One thing at a time. I didn’t do a major rehaul of my life. I changed one habit a month, and gradually over the course of a year or two changed a lot of things in my life. I won’t guarantee that all of these will work for you. They worked for me, but each person is different. Pick and choose the ones that will work best for you, and give them a try. One at a time.

1. One thing at a time. This is the simplest and best way to start reducing your stress, and you can start today. Right now. Focus as much as possible on doing one thing at a time. Clear your desk of distractions. Pick something to work on.

18

Need to write a report? Do only that. Remove distractions such as phones and email notifications while you’re working on that report. If you’re going to do email, do only that. This takes practice, and you’ll get urges to do other things. Just keep practicing and you’ll get better at it.

2. Simplify your schedule.

A hectic schedule is a major cause of high stress. Simplify by reducing the number of commitments in your life to just the essential ones. Learn to say no to the rest — and slowly get out of commitments that aren’t beneficial to you. Schedule only a few important things each day, and put space between them. Get out of meetings when they aren’t absolutely essential. Leave room for down time and fun.

3. Get moving.

Do something each day to be active — walk, hike, play a sport, go for a run, do yoga. It doesn’t have to be grueling to reduce stress. Just move. Have fun doing it.

4. Develop one healthy habit this month.

Other than getting active, improving your health overall will help with the stress. But do it one habit at a time. Eat fruits and veggies for snacks. Floss every day. Quit smoking. Cook something healthy for dinner. Drink water instead of soda. One habit at a time.

5. Do something calming.

What do you enjoy that calms you down? For many people, it can be

the “get moving” activity discussed above. But it could also be taking a nap, or a bath, or reading, or having sex (which can also be considered a “get moving” activity if you do it for longer than 5 minutes). Other people are calmed by housework or yardwork. Some people like to meditate, or take a nature walk. Find your calming activity and try to do it each day.

6. Simplify your finances.

Finances can be a drain on your energy and a major stressor. If that’s true with you, figure out ways to simplify things. Automate savings and bill payments and debt payments. Spend less by going shopping (at malls or online) much less. Find ways to have fun that don’t involve spending money.

7. Have a blast!

Have fun each day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. I like to play with my kids — they take my mind off everything and are really hilarious. I also like to play sports (again, often with my kids). Board games are fun. Sex, again, can be a fun activity. Whatever you choose, be sure to laugh.

8. Get creative.

Throwing yourself into a creative activity is another great way to de-stress and to prevent stress. I like writing, but others like to paint or play music or sketch or make pottery or do interior design or build things.

9. Declutter.

This is a favorite of mine. I like to take (Contd.. on p. 22)

What Do Successful People Do? It's revealed that early rising is a shared attribute among successful people. Morning people are more proactive and productive. Forbes Magazine has listed things successful people do before 8 am. It includes exercising before going to work as it gives a boost of energy and a deserved sense of accomplishment. They eat a healthy breakfast and map out their schedule for the day, as well as their goals and to do's. Visualising your day and finishing dreaded tasks first can help in making you successful.

China, Russia and Poland venture to space. China says they'll go to Pluto because it's the farthest. Russia says they'll go to Jupiter because it's the biggest. Poland says they'll go to the Sun. Russia and China warn Poland that they'll melt. Poland replies, "We'll go at night." ***** Why is Facebook such a hit? It works on the principle that 'People are more interested in others' life than their own.

DO YOU KNOW? Have An Open Mind The mind is like a parachute; it works best when it is open. How quickly we make assumptions, jump to conclusions and close our mind. How easily we form and hold fast to our opinions and then close our mind. How fast do we make a judgement, slap on a label and then close our mind. A closed mind never knows the delight of playing with possibilities, being enlightened by others point of view or enjoying the diversity of human life. An open and understanding mind never assumes, doesn't jump to conclusions and won't hold fast to any opinion. Perhaps it is no wonder a closed mind is not a very relaxed mind.

Get Rid Of Bad Breath bricate the tissues in your mouth.

Everyone has bad breath (also known as halitosis) at some points of time, such as in the morning when you wake up. But persistent bad breath is something which you should not accept as a norm.

Drink water regularly throughout the day and swish it between your teeth from side to side. Water does not help in producing saliva, but it will keep your mouth moisturized.

Here are the best ways to prevent bad breath: 1. The two major causes of bad breath are bacteria and decaying food particles in your mouth. Taking good oral hygiene care of your mouth is one of the best home remedies for bad breath: (i) Brush your teeth: Brush your teeth twice a day. Choose a fluoride tooth paste. Regular brushing in the correct way is crucial to prevent bad breath. There are hundreds of nooks and crevices in your mouth which can be a playground for these rotting morsels to get lodged and work on producing stinking smell. (ii) Clean your tongue: Brushing alone is not enough. Sixty percent of the bad breath is due to plaque and bacteria that gather on your tongue, especially on the back. Your tongue is the prime breeding ground for these two harmful rotting materials. One of the best ways to cure bad breath is to clear away this offending plaque and bacteria with a tongue scraper twice a day. Alternatively, you can also use your brush or the edge of a spoon for this purpose. (iii) Swish the water: Make it a habit to take a sip of water after you have any food and swish the water around your mouth between the teeth to clear the debris. (iv) Floss your teeth: Flossing removes food particles trapped between your teeth. These food particles would otherwise remain lodged between your teeth and decay with time producing smells emitting form your mouth. (v) Use mouthwash: Many of the mouthwashes are alcohol-based. Avoid these, as alcohol-based mouthwashes dry out and irritate your mouth. Preferably use that contains zinc chloride,

Some more bad breath remedies:

chloehexidine or hydrogen peroxide. (2) Keep your mouth moisturized: Your saliva is enemy of the bad breath. It contains crucial protective enzymes and has antiseptic properties that kill harmful bacteria. A dry mouth aggravates stinky smell in your mouth. Your mouth produces less saliva as you sleep at night that is why you can notice worst smell emitting from your mouth in the morning. So stay hydrated and keep your mouth properly moisturized to stimulate the salivary glands. Certain medications or medical conditions can also cause dry mouth. If such is the case, ask your doctor to switch to other medicines or consult your dentist to recommend such mouthwash or toothpaste that are specially formulated to tackle your dry mouth and help in providing salivary substitutes to lu-

(i) Cider vinegar also helps in preventing bad breath. Take a little of cider vinegar mix with water before brushing and swish between teeth and from one side to the other side of mouth. (ii) You can also try rinsing your mouth with a little of lemon juice mix with water during the day. (iii) Eat cinnamon to reduce bacteria counts in your mouth. (iv) Drink green tea, as it contains catechinto a powerful antioxidant which can get your mouth rid of bacteria. Bacteria cause stinky smells. (v) Cardamom is a natural breath freshener and has antibacterial properties. Cardamom is a rich source of a compound called cineole, a powerful antiseptic that kills bacteria and lessens bad breath. (vi) Drink water to keep your mouth moisturized as it helps in reducing growth of bacteria which otherwise would cause bad breath.

Live A Worry Free Life (Contd.. from p. 18) 20-30 minutes and just go through a room, getting rid of stuff we don’t use or need anymore. I look around at anything that’s cluttering up a room, and get rid of it or find a better place for it. When I’m done, I have a nice, peaceful enviornment for work, play, and living. Do this a little at a time — it can be one of your “fun activities”. 10. Be early. I will admit that it’s hard to be early when you have to get 6 kids ready (seriously — try

it!). But being late can be very stressful. Try to leave earlier by getting ready earlier, or by scheduling more space between events. Things always take longer than normal, so schedule some buffer time: extra time to get ready, to commute, to do errands before you need to be somewhere, to attend a meeting before another scheduled appointment. If you get somewhere early, it’s good to have some reading material.
