Rome And Tokyo Close In On Agreement Over Missal Translation Tokyo: For years work has been underway to revise the Japanese Missal, but the task of updating the 1978 edition has proven to be a thorny problem. The work is daunting. The goal is not so much a word-for-word, literal translation as one based upon a close examination of the cultural background and the particular linguistic characteristics of Japan. The actions and gestures used in the liturgy require equally painstaking care. Perhaps the biggest complication has been that the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, whose approval is required for any new translation, has until now requested translations that adhere closely to the Latin original. Recently however, “the atmosphere in the Congregation has changed dramatically,” said Bishop Masahiro Umemura of Yokohama, president of the Committee for the Liturgy at the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Japan (CBCJ). On March 18, Bishop Umemura visited the Congregation with fellow committee member Fr Franco Sottocornola of the Xaverian Missionary Fathers and committee secretary Toshimitsu Miyakoshi to submit revised editions of liturgical documents including “The Order of the Mass and Eucharistic Prayers 1 – 4” and “The General Instruction of the Roman Missal.” They also gave a report on the current state of affairs in Japan. There was reason to expect Bishop Umemura’s reception to be a cold one. Contention had arisen between the CBCJ and the Congregation in 2006 and 2007, when draft translations of liturgical texts into Japanese met with resistance in Rome. The dispute centered on certain departures from the Latin original. For instance, in translating the Latin phrase, “Et cum spiritu tuo,” (“And with your spirit”), the CBCJ decided that the literal translation of the Japanese ‘rei’ for the word ‘spiritu’ would cause misunderstanding among Japanese people, for whom the word would connote the idea of evil spirits or ghosts. Instead, they proposed changing the translation currently in use, “Mata shisai to tomo ni” (“And also with the priest”), to simply “Mata anata to tomo ni” (“And also with you”). For years this was deemed unacceptable by the Congregation, and little progress could be made. “In the past, the Congregation kept merely reiterating basic principles and regulations,” recalled Bishop

Umemura. But, to his surprise, “this time they gave us a chance to actually explain our reasons for the changes.” In recent years, the Congregation’s prefect, secretary, and its official handling Japan’s submissions have all been replaced. At the March meeting, the Japanese delegation met not only with Msgr Stephan H?nseler, the new official in charge, but also with Congregation Secretary Archbishop Arthur Roche, who had worked on the revised English translation of the Missal. The two listened to the delegation’s explanations for about two hours. This was the first time a secretary-level official had participated in these discussions. According to CBCJ committee secretary Miyakoshi, the Congregation’s concern about the “Et cum spiritu tuo” dilemma no longer revolved around faithfulness to the Latin. Instead, Archbishop Roche only raised three matters for consideration: first, the importance of coherence between this response and translations of certain scriptural passages; second, that the phrase reflects the Holy Spirit at work in the priest in a special way through the Sacrament of Holy Orders; and, third, that the flock must be taught the significance of this phrase. A formal response from the Congregation will be given within three months, but in the meantime the Japanese see the meeting as an encouraging sign that dismissive attitudes toward the local churches may be changing. “This was the first time we were able to participate in the discussion on an equal footing,” said Miyakoshi. Bishop Umemura believes that Pope Francis’ ascension to the papacy is having a significant influence. “I felt that the pope’s inclination to let the local bishops handle their own affairs has been given considerable weight throughout the Curia.” He noticed a similar change in attitude at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, too, which he also visited during his time in Rome. “The bishops of each country have expended considerable time toward their duty in preparing [translations of] the Missal and the guidelines for the rituals,” Bishop Umemura said. “In the future, I expect Rome to give the bishops’ conferences of each nation her unreserved trust, and to entrust matters to them accordingly.” Source: ucanews

Pope's ‘Urbi et Orbi' Easter Address

Dear Brothers and Sisters, a Happy and Holy Easter! The Church throughout the world echoes the angel’s message to the women: “Do not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised… Come, see the place where he lay” (Mt 28:56). This is the culmination of the Gospel, it is the Good News par excellence: Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and our hope. If Christ were not raised, Christianity would lose its very meaning; the whole mission of the Church would lose its impulse, for this is the point from which it first set out and continues to set out ever anew. The message which Christians bring to the world is this: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, but God the Father raised him and made him the Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death. That is why we tell everyone: “Come and see!” In every human situation, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere matter of words, but a testimony to unconditional and faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast… “Come and see!”: Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness. Will Anything Change In India With New Prime Minister?

he mood for change in the coun try is strong, and it is imminent that we would have a new prime minister and quite likely with a significant majority. We are all under the veil of the audacity of hope thinking in assuming that the office of the new prime minister will sway a magic wand and things will immediately start remarkably improving. The citizenry in the country is under a wrong impression as nothing significantly will be changing in the government. We need to clearly understand and appreciate that changing someone in the PMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office will not change the government. We will have a new set of ministers in the system, and that is the limit to change. We shall see as the government will still, as always, be run by the bureaucracy who would have the same set of ideas, stuck in the past with exceedingly shallow perspectives. Why do I make such audacious statements? This is for a simple reason that within the parliamentary system very little changes. We are subjected to the same torturous thought and ethos of the old bureaucratic setup. We all know that there is no change in bureaucracy when the government changes. The best we can see is the transfer of certain bureaucrats to different departments and this is as well seen as an opportunity by the non-performing and

defunct mind of the bureaucrat. To assert the point: we can clearly state that millions within the government still remain exactly the same. The problem within the system is that the government employees are permanent (breeding incestuous ideas) and have the most power (incidentally brutal power with no accountability). It is a well known, though ignored, that it is really the bureaucrats who run the government. The problem gets accentuated since the bureaucrat knows that he is governed by higher ups in the bureaucracy with ministers having minimal influence over their careers. Without a doubt, civil servants will typically cover each other's backs with nobody accepting ultimate responsibility and accountability. The understanding we need to build in this country is that if we wish to change the government than we need to change the bureaucracy. We need to imbibe from the US system wherein the spoils go to the victorious. The president in the US gets to appoint everybody at the top and positions of significance i.e., secretaries of various departments. The secretaries, in turn, fill the positions within their staff by bringing in new thought and perspectives. The most significant reality of this idea is that the bureaucrat in this case has not been part of the governmental system and is beholden by the idea of performing and keeping to the mandate as asserted by the president. What matters here is that newer ideas come in with incestuous tendencies being taken care of and most of all having the ability to fire a non-performing asset called the bureaucrat. This also gets rid of the inertia to explore the new and getting to do new things. We can rebut this logic by stating that new people at the top shall cause chaos though rather we should understand that it is new ideas that bring in change and take the country

forward. If India needs to change, then it needs to change its bureaucracy and effectively its civil services. We can start with the idea of getting secretaries not from the existing system of selected bureaucrats but through nominations by the new prime minister. What we might need is a special commission that tries to understand and work towards dismantling the archaic bureaucracy, which is a remnant of the Raj. The epical commission in in itself shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be formed by bureaucrats or former bureaucrats but by normal people who have not worked with civil servants, are outsiders on secondment, but quite likely have suffered from the hands of the tyrants. Incidentally we could have Arvind Kejriwal as the head of the commission as he understands the bureaucracy, has suffered from its hands and it could be an exceptional political move from the next prime minister. I just hope that Narendra Modi is listening to this and acts decisively. He has run the election campaign akin to a presidential campaign in the US, and I do hope that he runs the government in a similar way with an iron fist by getting rid of the archaic thoughts that are personified by the bureaucracy. The Signs are Ominous!

hree seemingly unconnected incidents took place in various parts of India recently. On Friday, 18th April, the BJP party leader in Bihar, Giriraj Singh made a categorical statement that “those who opposed Narendra Modi had no place in India. They would have to go to Pakistan after the elections”. Earlier in Visakhapatnam on April 8th, BJP’s senior leader Venkaiah Naidu said that “the BJP would bring in an anticonversion law to ban religious conversions all over the country if it is voted to power in 2014 elections”. And on April 21st, (Easter Sunday), the International working President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).Dr. Pravin Togadia in a vicious speech in Rajkot (Gujarat) demanded that Muslims vacate houses in the Hindu areas of the city. Targeting a Muslim businessman, Togadia gave him 48 hours to vacate his house “if he does not relent” he told the Hindu mobs “go with stones, tyres and tomatoes to his office” (reported in the Times of India ed. Ahmedabad, pg. 1, April 21st, 2014). Very interestingly last year, on March 21st, 2013, (Easter Sunday) in the Maninagar area of Ahmedabad, Togadia gave a call to a large gathering for the establishment of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ (nation) stating that by 2015, Gujarat would be the first ‘Hindu State’ of the country. Incidentally, Maninagar is the constituency of Narendra Modi, the BJP prime ministerial candidate

(who still hopes to swear by the Constitution of India) but till today has had no courage to take on Togadia and to denounce what he has been saying and doing. Though sections of the media make of an animosity between the two, the fact that they have the same mindset and are born to the same ideology, leaves no one in doubt. The three incidents in very different parts of the country have much in common. They primarily reveal the core Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideology which has spawned the BJP. It is no secret that the BJP prime ministerial candidate Modi was decided upon by the top brass of the RSS. That the ultimate desire of the RSS is the establishment of a ‘Hindu nation State’ is without a shadow of doubt. Naidu’s comments in Visakhapatnam must be seen in the same context. In 2002, Modi raised the ‘bogey of conversion’ during his election campaign in Gujarat and in 2003, he brought in the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act which must be easily ranked as one of the most draconian laws in the history of any democracy anywhere in the world. The law very blatantly says that “if one wants to change his / her religion, one must first seek the permission of the civil authority (the Collector)”. This law clearly violates Article 25 of the Constitution of India and Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human

Rights. Giriraj’s threats are not empty ones. In his ten-year plus rule in Gujarat, Modi has been vindictive and vengeful. This can be exemplified by several instances. In a hard-telling article in Live Mint (19th April, 2014), entitled ‘Narendra Modi critics Expect No Quarter, No Mercy” states “What should we expect from Modi Sarkar? I predict no quarter and no mercy. He will continue his tyrannical (I use the word in a classical sense) ways as he has in Gujarat”. So when Giriraj speaks the obvious, however silly it sounds, he is only manifesting the fascist agenda of those who seek to rule us. One cannot help but be reminded of that immortal poem by the German Bertold Brecht (1898-1956) ‘In Dark Times’.....In hope, the struggle will continue indeed; even if the signs are ominous! (* Fr. Pray For the Spirit of Jesus to Come Over Us

hristian vocation is a call to become part of an ongoing pro cess of establishing the Kingdom of God preached by Jesus Christ. We cannot claim to be part of the Kingdom of God if we do not work whole heartedly for the progress of the Kingdom in and through our lives. If the seeds of the Kingdom are put in the life of each person then it is to increase, expand, grow, advance, overcome, overwhelm, and displace all other false fiefdoms of personal or communal interests. ‘It spreads out like light, pervades like salt, and enlivens like leaven as it brings the fullness of Jesus Christ Himself into every place’ (Eph. 1:22- 23). Each action of persons is judged between the values of Kingdom and the world. In a similar manner the actions of the laity and non-laity are judged in comparison with degree of complaisance to the higher values proposed in the Bible. The Pastores dabo vobis, teaches that ‘The identity of the vocation to the ministerial priesthood is to be understood within the context of Christian identity as a disciple of Christ.’ We must remember that when non-laity give his /her life to the Lord, all that they do are suppose to become Jesus’ mission. Even average people become more than average when they become children of God. ‘What is normal for the children of this world is not normal for the children of light.’ It is the fruit of their dedication to the Kingdom values that forces them to work against corruption, maladministration, mismanagement of funds, favouritism, arrogance, bullish behaviour etc. The sociospiritual evils mentioned here are not less than criminal tendencies and when we support such individuals, we are going away from God’s way. A religious person is always worried about his/ her obligatory religious practices but a spiritual person practising his/her religious obligations as the way to touch the God above the ritualistic practices.

Lumen Gentium (12) adds flavours when it says that ‘besides sacraments the Holy Spirit sanctifies and leads the people of God with special gifts, he makes them fit and ready to undertake the various tasks and offices which contribute toward the renewal and building up of the Church’. Every Christian who wishes to contribute to the renewal of the Church should remember that all complaints/allegations levelled against anyone should have incriminating evidence to prove our accusation are true and above personal interests. If all our accusations against anyone are motivated by personal interests, then in-front of counter attacks our courage washes away like letters written on the sea shore. If we are convinced of the values of the Kingdom, then we will never live a life in timidity. It is a matter of fact that

many priests and religious suffer needlessly unable to speak the things in their hearts, because of fear food, house, security and good postings. These earthly concerns really distances us from the real mission of Jesus. If we feel that we are weak then must pray with Prophet Isaiah, ‘Strengthen the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees’ (Isaiah 35:3). Our whole work is to be centred on the faith that when we are at the Lord’s mission, He gives us the energy and vitality to accomplish those things that require our attention. The powers of evil gathers together to crush the goodness but strong resistance can only melt them like thick snow in the Antarctica. This strong will power grows only when one decides to ‘die to the self.’ It makes you able to face embarrassing situations where, your opinions are ridiculed, all manner of evil is spoken against you, you are purposely set aside, rejected, forgotten, and hurt with all kinds of insults. All these must strengthen us to defeat the powers of evil or else they will disfigure the body of Christ, the Church. How can we transform the Church, if all of us bent our knees before the oppressive structures of power? I believe that transformation begins, when we begin to feel that there is a greater aim ahead of us than the mountain of obstacles infront of us.

Christians in India Outraged by Modi Playing Dumb to Issue of Persecution

s India continues its national elections, it is becoming more and more clear that Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist BJP party will be taking over the majority of India's next government. Many Christians fear Modi and BJP due to their track record of not protecting religious minorities. When questioned by church leaders about attacks on churches in India, Modi played dumb and stated that he was not aware of any such attacks. In 2013 alone, churches were attacked over 150 times and in some cases made national headlines. Modi playing dumb to the issue of Christian persecution in India has many church leaders outraged and fearful of what the future for Christians looks like.

Christian leaders condemn Modi’s ignorance on antiChristian attacks New Delhi: Christian leaders have condemned the statement of Narendra Modi that he was unaware of any attacks on members of the community and their places of worship in India. The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate made the remarks in a television interview last week. “What he said was an utter lie. The onslaught against Christians by Rightwing groups has always been cause for concern. The Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, has been attacking members of the Christian community and vandalizing churches across India,” said Richard Howell, general secretary, Evangelical Fellowship of India, which represents about 45 churches across the country. Expressing shock and dismay at Modi’s statement, the community leaders said he cannot win their trust if he feigns ignorance about their sufferings.

The Election And Our Confusion

his is the most difficult election since independence. One side there is a party which claims to be the messiah of minorities and on the other, a party supported by the Sangh Parivar with a record of minority bashing. There is bound to be a conflict. Looking at the gravity of the conflict one can understand that we woke up only at the last moment. It is true with the proverbial saying that a person starts digging a well only when he is thirsty. It also exposes the hidden truth that everything is not well within the community as far as politics is concerned. Since independence we have been told the proverbial story of washerman and the crocodile by the ruling party which tried to keep Christians under it’s wrap and we have happily accepted without raising any eye brows. The party was born on secular credentials, started losing it’s secular stream fast ever since people from SS & BJP were welcomed into the party with open arms. Let’s have a look at the present scenario where the community is totally confused about the party to be voted to power. The root lies within the community and it’s leadership. The Bombay Catholic Sabha which is supposed to guide people on political issues is trying to control units by imposing Central rule. The people who take initiatives are fired, telling they cannot decide even on local issues. During the SOUL Azad Maidan agitation, different leaders started talking in different voices without even assessing the ground situation, some of them even went to the extent of ridiculing the PP of St. Anthony’s Malwani. The Church hierarchy wants to control the faithfuls psychologically and keep them busy either in meetings of different Church organizations or in choir practices. A single member may be involved in 10 different parish organisations and gets exhausted only

Many of us are fully convinced that it’s not our duty to get involved in mainstream politics or related work. Some Bishops and priests unsuccessfully tried to convince people to join the mainstream but discouraged from doing so because our priorities are different. Some communities have even opened colleges to train their members for IAS/IPS & IRS but as a community we hardly encourage our own to complete beyond secondary school. We have been reduced to a praying community and encouraged to find every solution through prayer. As Fr Anthony D’Mello rightly said , “ God will not be doing our work” which we as human beings supposed to do. Look at another scenario where certain problems relating to Church properties. The properties are sold without even the knowledge of PPC but the same is approved by the hierarchy?. Where BMC has issued land acquisi-

tion notices but the Diocesean Estate dept advises the PP to surrender the land without even raising questions because it’s needed for development?. So many Churches and institutions got notices from BMC to surrender the land but still nobody wants to even talk about it forget about taking any action. We are so confused on such grave issues as to who will bell the cat? We do not even have a full pledged legal team to handle/guide such serious problems. The community doesn’t even know the financial health of the community, we boast about educating lakhs of students every year which helps them to become leaders abroad and send Dollars & Pounds to charities and organizations which caters to their own communities. Church may not have the expertise to advise people on political issues but it has the potential and funds to make every Christian a formidable leader if we start educating our own and train in leadership qualities so that the community will be the ultimate beneficiary. But many a times we expect people to attend all such programmes on their own which people cannot afford to.

You should count how many times you pick up and check or use your phone in a day. Calculate how many hours – it’s almost certainly hours – of a day you waste texting, tweeting, Facebooking, writing down or commenting on your own life or the lives of others instead of living in the moment. Technology is a necessary part of life now. You don’t leave your comfort zone. Life is about making choices. Do you choose to do this or do you choose to do that? When you choose one path in life, you actively abandon another. This moment can only be lived once and in one way. You will never again experience the second that has just past; you spent that second. If the worth of your life is truly the sum of your experiences, then you should do your best to maximize the joy and pleasure you receive from those experiences. You spend money on things that don’t matter. Time is money: true. And although money isn’t time, it is a useful tool in making the time you do have more enjoyable. If money isn’t an issue, that doesn’t mean you still couldn’t put that money to better use and enjoy life even more than you are now. You don’t take care of your body. Physical health is one of the most important things in life. It literally allows you to stay living. Don’t think of health as something you use up to the point you die. April18th Mira road: A day to reflect on the Lord’s Passion and his love for us. To help the faithful reflect on the Lord’s Passion the youth of St. Joseph’s Parish, Mira Road enacted a beautiful and creative Way of the Cross. It started with the opening prayer by Fr. Dominic Vas followed by the live enacted way of the Cross on the ground and continued in the premises of the church. It focused on our family life, social issues. Thousands of people participated in the way of the cross and reflected on the passion of our Lord. In the end, Fr. Agnelo Rebelo congratulated the youth and all those who worked hard to organize it. It was indeed a meaningful way of the cross.

‘The Evil You Do, Remains With You...’

A woman baked chapatti (roti) for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapatti on the window sill, for whosoever would take it away. Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapatti. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: “The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” This went on, day after day. Every day, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and uttered the words: “The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The woman felt irritated. “Not a word of gratitude,” she said to herself… “Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean?” One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. “I shall get rid of this hunchback,” she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the

chapatti she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. “What is this I am doing?” she said. Immediately, she threw the chapatti into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window sill. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and muttered the words: “The evil you do,

remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman. Every day, as the woman placed the chapatti on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him.. She prayed for his safe return. That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, “Mom, it’s a miracle I’m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole chapatti. As he gave it to me, he said, “This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!” ” As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale. She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chapatti that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! It was then that she realized the significance of the words: “The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” Do good and Don’t ever stop doing good, even if it is not appreciated at that time.
