Delhi to get India's first Russian Orthodox Church
T
he construction of India's first Russian Orthodox Church will soon begin here, a top Russian diplomat said here. "A decision will be taken soon to begin construction of the Russian Orthodox Church within our cultural centre. This was the most convenient way of reaching an understanding with the (local) authorities, because no major decision, apart from architectural, will be required," Sergey Karmalito, senior counsellor at the Russian embassy, told IANS. One of the largest of the Eastern Orthodox congregations, the Russian Orthodox Church had launched a parish here in 2011 but has so far operated out of the Russian embassy premises. "It will be constructed quite soon, and what is required now are the financial inputs for the project from Moscow", Karmalito said. Pointing out that the decision to construct the church within the cultural centre meant that the necessary approvals required were only architectural in nature, for which the Russian embassy was in touch with concerned civic authorities, Karmalito said: "The architectural draft will be adopted." The Russian Centre of Science and Culture, located in the Ferozeshah Road area of central Delhi, has a few high rises in the vicinity and the church blueprint would have to conform to the zonal building regulations. The church will open onto the main road. "During our previous ambassador's tenure here, the idea was to have it within the Russian embassy premises (in the capital's diplomatic enclave), but that would have created security issues. Now, with an entrance from the main road, the church will be accessible to all," Karmalito said. Unlocking the key to the kingdom of heaven, so to speak, was necessitated by the increasing number of Russians living in India and the need to provide religious services in the country. "The Russian community in Delhi, comprising many women who have married Indians, families of diplomats and other families that stay here for part of the year are the inspiration for this church," Karmalito said.

Some of these families, along with their children, took the confessional from a Russian priest at the midnight Easter mass held at the embassy's White Hall. The first Russian Orthodox Parish in Delhi, named after the apostle Thomas, was registered in 2006 when Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (at that time serving as chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate's department for external church relations), visited India. The embassy has earlier also considered a proposal for establishing a permanent parish in Goa, where almost 10,000 Russians live for at least six months in a year. The agenda of last year's Moscow summit talks between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reportedly involved discussions on permission to build a Russian Orthodox Church in Delhi as well as on saving Russia's only Hindu temple from demolition threatened by local Moscow authorities. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple in Moscow had been under the threat of being demolished due to issues relating to land allocation. IANS

Thoughts of a Xavierite by Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala
A few days ago the Principal of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas wrote an email to all his students urging them to vote in the coming elections. He highlighted areas, which he thought voters should keep in mind when casting their ballot, and advised to choose wisely and support “people who pledge to work to take Human Development Indicators higher and who commit themselves to a pluralistic culture in diverse India”. His letter came under harsh criticism with the climax being a complaint filed against him by the BJP for allegedly violating the election code. As a proud student of St. Xavier’s I am appalled at the way in which the sequence of events are playing out. In all the mud-slinging no one has stopped to ask the students what we make of this situation. To start with, as a recipient of Fr. Frazer’s letter, I did not in any way feel compelled by him to vote for any particular party. His primary purpose struck me as being to remind his students to exercise their right to vote as dutiful citizens, especially since many of us would be first time voters. While he did give his own take on the political scene, he in no way voiced his direct support for any particular party. He did criticize the Gujarat model of development as being a capitalistic one, but this is not something that has not already been said a thousand times. He spoke of secularism, something that is ensconced in our constitution. He emphasized human development as a key criterion by which a voter must decide. How then is his letter so unethical that it demands this much attention? What has he said that is so manipulative that the political parties are up in arms? As a student all I see is a political party identifying itself with the tags of communal and crony capitalism, aggressively defending itself even though it was unnamed. It also made clear its stance that it would not tolerate the broadcasting of views dissenting from that of its own. While it criticizes the Principal for misusing his position as a figure of authority, it conveniently ignores the influence exerted in its favor, by the authoritative figure of a prominent yoga and spiritual guru whose number of followers far exceeds the 3000 odd students of the college, or a famed singer whose number of fans runs into the many hundred thousands. (Contd.. on p. 4)

Egyptian court sentences to death 683 Muslim Brotherhood members Cairo - A judge at the Muslim Brotherhood trial in Egypt has recommended the death penalty for 683 people, including its leader Mohammed Badie (pictured). The judge convicted the defendants over an attack on a police station in Minya in 2013 in which a policeman was killed. He also confirmed the death (Contd.. from p. 3) But most importantly what all the parties and talking heads have failed to take into consideration is the fierce independence and free thinking that St. Xavier’s fosters amongst its students. Few students, if any, would blindly follow instructions without attempting to understand and decipher for themselves the pros and cons of any particular decision. A decision as big as which party to vote for, would hardly then be decided on a Principal’s letter, one that has been aired long after people’s minds have already been made up. One that serves no other purpose than as a reminder to vote. Personally I have seen the college come alive with debates and expressions of all kinds for months before the elections got underway. The campus has been hot with passion as one view clashes with another, neither likely to give way without a fight. Which is why I find it humorous that the parties believe the students and leaders of the future are so fickle minded that they would be swayed by a few mild words. But lastly I wish to understand how any person or party can be upset by even direct criticism when the job itself requires that they be put under the harshest scrutiny, especially since they intend to rule the country. That being said, I believe political parties have succeeded yet again in drawing attention to something that would have unmistakably slipped away unnoticed. And as a student of Xavier’s, I’m glad they did! —Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala is a student of St. Xavier's college in Mumbai

sentences of 37 of 529 death sentences out of 529 passed in March, commuting most to life in prison. The sentences had drawn widespread criticism from human rights groups, the United Nations, the United States and Europe. A spokesman for United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said the "cursory mass trial" was "rife with procedural irregularities." Many of the lawyers for the accused boycotted today's hearing, demanding that the judge be recused and calling him a "butcher". The trials took just hours each and the court prevented defence lawyers from presenting their case, this according to Human Right Watch. Egyptian law requires that death sentences be confirmed by the presiding judge after a comment has been invited from the Grand Mufti of Al Azhar, the country's leading religious official. The Mufti's opinion to the judge is secret. The guilty verdict and death sentences are still subject to appeal at the Court of Cassation. (AsiaNews)

In 10 years there will only be a few thousand Christians left in Iraq Baghdad - The Iraqi Chaldean Patriarch, Louis Raphael Sako I, says he is seriously concerned over the continuing decline of Christian presence in the country: "If measures are not taken soon, in 10 years' time there will only be a few thousand Christians left in Iraq". The Iraqi Christian community had more than a million followers, 600 thousand in Baghdad alone, now they have less than 400 thousand in the whole country. The main causes of this massive migration are poor security, increased death threats against Christians from Islamists and the seizure of their property by armed groups. The Patriarch describes the scale of the phenomenon of migration as "frightening" and says it is worsened by the encouragement of Western powers. After visiting communities throughout the country, Sako said: "Christians are those who suffer most from the upsurge in violence across Iraq. This is due to the fact that Christians do not maintain tribal affiliations, as do Arab Muslims. The only way they have to resolve disputes is through the Iraqi legal system, which is often criticized for its corruption, and which is subject to political manipulation". (AsiaNews)

Who Appeases Whom? A simple skull cap has generated enough heat in the country. Ironically, this small cap provides enough ventilation so that the wearer is comfortable. Our Prime Ministerial candidate – Narendra Modi perhaps felt that had he to don that mini cap he would be seen to appease the minority community with which this cap is associated. The truth lies elsewhere. He has a big constituency – the hard core Hindus hugely influenced by RSS doctrine. Whether they accept it or not, there is that element of animosity towards that community and therefore, if any accommodation or concession is shown to them, it will offend that significant segment of Modi’s core constituency. At the height of 2002 riots, there was a report that not reaching out to those who frantically pleaded for ‘help’, from those marauding fanatics, had something to do with those who were hell bent on ‘teaching a lesson’ to that community ‘once and for all’. There were no direct or explicit instructions but the message was clear. It is precisely why no Minister in power was found to be directly involved. Only the poor police officials paid the price. BJP had been vociferously demanding apology from the Congress for the Sikh massacre and they did. One can understand why Narendra Modi has REFUSED to apologize for the riots. His one line defense has been “If I am guilty, hang me” but there is something like moral responsibility. Only recently South Korean PM Chung Hong-won resigned over the ferry disaster in which hundreds perished. This tragedy was more of a natural disaster. Yet the PM felt he could not live with that sense of guilt. NaMo please note! Modi knows that saying ‘sorry’ is a very minor issue but it would send wrong signals. It would go against the RSS slogan “Garv se kaho hum hindu hai.” which he repeated recently during the elections. He needs them to win the elections. He is seen as a modern Vallabhbhai Patel and he does not want to be seen as ‘soft’ particularly towards the minority community. The skull cap controversy needs to be seen in that context. If the skull cap was ‘untouchable’ then the likes of Vajpai, Advani and even Rajnath Singh would not have worn it. To make things worse, Modi

VIEWS on NEWS has shown that he is not only weak in History but also in family culture. Women do not wear any head gear so asking whether Sonia Gandhi wears it, was the biggest blunder one could have made. Perhaps one may forgive him because technically he is not married [no offence meant]. By calling the skull cap an item of ‘appeasement’ Modi has made a loaded communal statement which can have far reaching implications in these religiously surcharged elections. This encourages others to talk about ‘Go to Pakistan’. By not expelling Giriraj Singh, the party is actually ‘appeasing’ its core constituency. Ironically, BJP President Rajnath Singh does not concur with the Prime Ministerial candidate which again is a tactical statement aimed at damage control. He has spoken on behalf of the party but all appeals are made for votes for Modi and not BJP. Unfortunately, nobody is voting for BJP or even Modi. People are actually voting against the UPA in general and the Congress Party in particular. It’s not a wave in favour of the BJP or Modi but a tsunami against the misdeeds of the Congress. With limited options, BJP stands to gain and gain handsomely. *****
Defeat Without Contest? Even before the first ballot was cast, there is one candidate who stands as a defeated man even though he did not contest the elections. It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister – Manmohan Singh, who had the best CV among the global Heads of Governments, is a sad man indeed. Here is a man, who agreed to take the responsibility to stand for Sonia Gandhi and lead the nation, did extremely well in the first innings. The second innings though was a mixture of accomplishments marred by failures on crucial issues. Last elections revolved around this man who headed UPA 2, in the midst of global meltdown and the government did well to keep things under control. There was a loss of concentration on important issues like price rise etc. The economy went for a toss which had cascading effect with disastrous results. The events that followed resulted in
by Marshall Sequeira scams of unprecedented proportions which shook the government. The government which was supposed to govern was forced to shift focus midway to fire-fighting and trouble-shooting. Both these exercises consumed almost the entire time and energy of the ministers who were trying to defend the indefensible. The sycophants were keener to please the UPA chief rather than the head of the government. The coalition dharma made the PM rudderless. Nobody would listen to him and yet he, like a disciplined soldier of the Congress party, suffered all the ignominy for the sake of the party. To make matters worse, his media advisor, Sanjaya Baru, whom the PM treated as his son, wrote the book – The Accidental Prime Minister. The book by someone who worked closely with him obviously had the ring side view of things and therefore cannot be treated as product of imagination. What is disturbing is that, whatever the author saw was in his official capacity and to publish those things without the concurrence of the man at the centre of it all is bad. The timing of release was worse, meant to hit below the belt. It will not be surprising if he is rewarded by the new establishment for his contribution. The moment Manmohan Singh declared [was it induced?] that he is no longer in the race for the top slot, his value [whatever was left of it] depreciated in a big way. Whatever little respect he could command, disappeared. Ministers began openly blaming him for not projecting the UPA achievements properly and not being loud enough. Suddenly he realized that like Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, he was ‘deserted’ by those around him and also ‘above’ him [Gandhis included]. Even his own brother, who remained apolitical thus far, decided to join the BJP for political gains. Manmohan’s humiliation is total. Wait and watch, this is only the beginning.

remember watching the match. In a pub in 1986. World Cup Football. It is an experience to die for. Which I almost did in the bedlam that followed when Maradona the world’s finest footballer from Argentina fisted a ball into England’s goal and it escaped the referee’s usual hawk eyes but not the eyes of the fans and the eyes of England’s coach who went berserk and was about to have a stroke. Later Maradona called it the “Hand of God” but it was too late. I have continuously experienced the hand of God in my life. Otherwise why would two members of the of the Cosme Mathias Pharmaceutical family do what they did in the year 1939? We were at the ancestral home on the island of Divar and I was dying of bacillary dysentery. I need two vials of injectable antibiotics. It was 9 p.m. and outside my bedroom neighbours were saying the rosary and stray dogs were howling to keep the dreaded man with the hood, lamp and sickle away.
Heated onion juice in large and constant quantities was poured into my hair mixed, I was later told, with the blood from the tail of a baby lizard that was lazing around on our kitchen wall. In the mean while two young men in their twenties, Tome and Francisco Menezes owning two separate pharmacies in Panjim set out on a life saving mission.

route two golden vials in their hands. Two strong legs, two big hearts, some “urrak” on the way and the Hand of God saved my life. The question whether it was worthwhile saving my life has never been answered. Every other year my family and I have experienced God’s intervention. Too many times to recount in this article. There is one I cannot but recall now that Thecla passed away into the loving, all embracing hands of the Lord in 2009 It was 1998 and my wife of 40 years of marriage had an irreversible kidney failure. The whole extended family of almost 60 people went down on their knees and prayed. And as we prayed we never ceased to hope Hope keeps us sane. Hope allows us to dream. Martin Luther King who dared to dream about equal rights for blacks said “We must accept finite disappointments but never lose infinite hope” I had a dream that Thecla would have a kidney donor. Infinite hope came in a

letter from Thecla’s older brother Cyril who wrote “If I had two hearts I would offer you one. I pledge one kidney to you” For a 60 year old who had a wife and five children it was like laying down his life for a sister he loved dearly. “We never accept a donor above the age of fifty” said Dr Bharat Shah. It took weeks and all my persuasive skills to convince the illustrious nephrologist and, lo and behold, the transplant took place at Hinduja Hospital in a matter of months. I have seen some beautiful sights in my life but the sight of two siblings lying on two beds side by side for the kidney transplant I shall remember till my dying day. In addition to their angelic faces and the tubes that connected them there was the invisible hand of god which said” be not afraid my hand is strong as it is gentle. All will be well” And so it was. Thecla and started to lead a normal life. Unfortunately in the third month tests indicated that the transplanted kidney had developed cancer. Dr Bharat Shah was devastated. The implant had succeeded against all odds and now cancer. The year was 1998 and it was Bharat Shah’s first such case.
Roche Pharmaceuticals. I had paid Rs 2 lakhs for the vials to Roche in Mumbai and I was carrying Rs 1 lakh with me to be paid as Custom Duty. As I was waiting for the formalities I saw a neatly dressed Customs Office running towards me saying “Gaaarge what are you doing here?” We talked about our old college days in Dharwad and I quickly related to him about Thecla. I also mentioned about the Customs Duty He called one of assistants and said “Pick up the parcel and Carry it to Mr Menezes’ car. I will deal with the paper work.” And the hand of God worked one more time in my life. When the time came to administer the injection Bharat Shah spoke with the doctors at the Harvard Medical School. The answer was simple. The cancer would be dealt with but the kidney would be rejected. Back to the dialysis table. When the medical teams in the USA heard that Thecla’s cancer had been cured and the kidney was still functioning they invited Dr Bharat Shah to the USA to make a presentation. They were incredulous. Thecla lived for 12 years like a normal patient. Glorious years in which we traveled all over the globe, save Australia and New Zealand.
I think of our lives of 53 years of marriage of a benevolent, kind, generous, forgiving and humble God as we watch the coverage of our elections and the arrogance of all those directly involved. The arrogance of promising that all criminals in Parliament will be jailed when you know it is a lie, a pipe dream involving the jailing of your own party men or the use of ordinances and Indira type “emergency” The arrogance of a family that has had such opportunities to lift a nation of beautiful people to a place in sun and failed miserably beyond their dimpled elegance. The arrogance of people in Power who build statues of themselves or walk into a police station to forcibly release a Party member arrested for serious crimes, or announce that water supply to a village will be stopped if they do not all vote for his relative or telling people opposing a certain PM candidate that they will all be packed off to Pakistan as if he was the owner of both India and Pakistan. Or believing that victory at the hustings depended on a game of musical hats. Have these people heard of God? God Almighty too big to occupy the space of any one religion? Well they will hear of Him when the fist of the “Hand of God” strikes hard. And grinds slowly but grinds exceedingly small. O
I contacted some very dear friends. Young and dynamic doctors at John Hopkins and Harvard Medical School. We were advised to try out a new and powerful drug from Roche. “Don’t give up” said Dr Cheri Ann Menezes Nathan Director of Oncology Feist Weiller Cancer Center in Los Angeles with friends in several other Cancer Hospitals. And so I found myself at The Sahar Airport waiting to collect a consignment of four injections flown in by Swiss Air straight from the laboratories of

Fr.Frazer's Remarks
always been disinterested in voting, may have not ventured out of their homes.
Some poor thinking and narrow minded people affiliated to political parties are raking controversy over the wise and prudent comments made by Fr.Frazer in the national interst. I am wholly in agreement with what is said and believe there is no room for misunderstanding if one thinks above individual motives and in broad sense. The BJP tried to put last minute pressure to keep the voters with them. But this cannot suppress the truth and the spirit of Fr. Frazer in any manner. Few people have the guts to say what he said.
—George DSouza.
Unwarranted Criticism The Principal of Mumbai’s prestigious St Xavier’s college, Fr Frazer Mascarenhas, now unfortunately finds himself in the news and in a tight spot, having to face up to the ire of the BJP for allegedly overstepping his brief and misusing his position in his official e-mail to his students denigrating the Gujarat development model and praising some of the achievements of the UPA govt. It is unfortunate that a priest of his stature should involve himself in politics by making a strong but implicit pitch for a particular political party by running down the other on the eve of the elections in Mumbai. As these remarks are of a personal and advisory nature of principal to students, they cannot in any way be linked or compared with the church’s recent advisory to Catholics, reminding them of their obligations and right to vote prudently and judiciously for the right candidate, but without naming any political party. It is sad that a religious twist is being given by some politicians to the matter under debate.

Lok Sabha Elections In Mumbai – Was It A Farce ? Why are mumbaikars so apathetic when it comes to voting ? This is the question being asked by the media. Several celebrities and the Election Commission have been urging the people to exercise their vote. But on the 24th of April we could see what really happened in the city of Mumbai. Instead of showing those who voted, the News Channels should have focused their cameras on the several Help Desks located around the Polling Booths and they would know why the Turnout in Mumbai was so low - the New channels repeatedly kept saying that Mumbaikars have again failed the test. The answer is that a large number of citizens could not exercise their Fundamental Right because their names were not on the Voters List ? They spent hours running from one Help Desk to another trying to find their names on the Voters List. The personnel manning the Help Desks however, were quite co-operative – they did everything possible to help the harried citizens, at certain places even looking up the website on their Lap Tops in order to trace the names. And at the end of it all, they had to return home disappointed. Of course, those who have
So, who is responsible for this sad state of affairs ? Before the Election Commission preaches about the importance of voting, they should first put their house in order. It is shocking to see the manner in which names of voters who have voted since the last 35 – 40 years have been deleted. There were a lot of other frightening irregularities in the Voters Lists, of which the less said, the better. It has been reported that in May 2013, Mr. Sharad Pawar submitted an application before the Baramati competent authorities stating that his name be deleted from Baramati. He later got himself registered in Mumbai and voted as a mumbaikar on the 24 of April – the change in the records took place within less than a year – very efficient, I should say ! On the other hand, there are those who have submitted the necessary forms for change of address (many of them within the same constituency), much earlier, but were shocked to learn that their names were struck off the Voters List altogether ! So much for the efficiency of the Election Commission ! Needless to say, the Election Commission needs to get more organized, – they are in dire need of a revamp, in order to make our democracy more responsive, otherwise our Elections would continue to be a farce.

Hindu Radical Object To Catholic Procession In Kerala Thrisssur: A pro-Hindu outfit is observing a dawn-to-dusk shut down in Trissur district of Kerala Monday to protest police “attitude” in its tussle with Catholics over a parish feast. Police said some rightwing Hindu activists objected to the passage of a Catholic procession through the premises of a Hindu temple on Saturday night. The procession was in connection with the feast of St Sebastian at Saint Antony’s Catholic Church at nearby Murkanad. Church authorities said they had taken permission from the temple authorities to let the procession pass through the temple and that it was the practice for several years. The parish comes under Trichur Syro-Malabar archdiocese. The Hindu outfit said the authorities of Murkand Aalumparambu had not given the permission this year.
When the Hindu activists blocked the procession at the temple premises, the police forcibly cleared the way for the procession. Four Hindu activists

Pope Tells Sinner She Should Be Allowed Communion Vatican City: Pope Francis reportedly told a woman “living in sin” with a divorced man that she is free to take Holy Communion, in what appears to be a significant departure from Catholic teaching. Jacqui Lisbona, who is from the Pope’s homeland of Argentina, wrote to the Jesuit pontiff to tell him that she had been refused Communion by her local priest, who objected to the fact that she was married to a previously divorced man. Prohibited from marrying in church, they had instead opted for a civil ceremony. “[The priest] told me that every time I went home, I was going back to living in sin,” she said. In her letter, Mrs Lisbona, who has two teenage daughters with her current husband after 19 years of marriage, said she was worried that if she did take Communion – perhaps in a church where she was not known to the
priest – she would be “violating Church rules”. The Pope, who since being elected 13 months ago has established a reputation for phoning ordinary Catholics out of the blue in response to letters they have sent, called her at her home in the central region of Santa Fe on Easter Monday. He reportedly told her: “A divorcee who takes communion is not doing anything wrong.” In a rebuke to the local priest who refused her the Sacrament, he added: “There are some priests who are more papist than the Pope.” When asked whether the remarks attributed to the Pope were correct, a Vatican spokesman told The Telegraph: “We would neither confirm nor deny that - this was a private telephone call made by the Holy Father and we would not divulge the details.”
suffered minor injuries in the police action. The police also took into custody 22 others. The outfit claimed they had the temple authorities’ order cancelling the earlier one and so had objected to the procession and alleged the police were not willing to accept this. Police said they allowed the procession to pass through the temple premises on the strength of the order of the temple authorities. Meanwhile, three chapels under Irinjalakuda diocese were damaged late last night allegedly by the activists reportedly as a fallout of the police action. Police said a section of the activists had blocked the church’s ‘Way of
Cross’ procession on April 11 and recited hymns without any provocation. Irinjalakuda diocesan spokesman Fr Joju Kutikad said complaints had been lodged with the respective police stations. Police said a peaceful atmosphere prevails over Moorkanad area and situation is under control, the Business Standard reported.

Silence On Fire
I
t was 5 a.m. on November, 2, 1992. We were couched in contempla tion on the banks of the river Ganges, in Benares (Varanasi). The group was simply experiencing the mystery of this hallowed place, sanctified since ancient times, by the powerful, poignant, pregnant, passionate presence of the Creator. It had been quickened in spirit by millions of pilgrims, down the centuries, bringing them perennial spiritual wisdom. They came here to make their peace with man and God and found heaven in their very beings. The air was bracing, misty and ethereal, and the ambience placid. We calmly journeyed into ourselves, each one of us, to the innermost core of our hearts. We were in touch with God’s silence, a natural quietude that perennially pervades nature. In the rush of the cleansing water, we sensed the stillness of the eternal. Soul and sky were silent together. Earth and heaven were blissfully interlaced. Pure, ecstatic adoration! In a thrice we felt we were “totally empty” of everything and “totally full” of God! There was no “speedpraying,” no hurry, no flurry, no appointment book - the symbol of our age! Yet, God was doing things to us, in us and through us! I was fully aware of the intimacy, oneness and communion with my wife, Lorraine, (who sat by my side in the mystical love of union), God, and all creation, as “I experienced the joy of living in the presence of the Lord, (and all that IS), in the land of the living” (Ps. 116:8). It was “an intense moment, nay, a lifetime burning in every moment!” (T. S. Eliot). We sensed total enlightenment, at-oneness! This is the goal of spirituality!
10
Leon Bent We had waited expectantly for the much sought-after ‘surya darshan’. Finally, the orange ball of fire, tip-toed imperceptibly on the eastern horizon! Wow! We were overwhelmed with wonder! The Creator’s handiwork filled us with awe. An intriguing inner voice kept persisting: “Sshh! Be still. I am with you. Do not be afraid. I hold you in the palm of my hand. All is well. Be at peace.” “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps. 46:10). Ah! Sweet Mystery! The holy river was impartial. It had always been so. It held us, non-Hindus, in the arms of acceptance, wholeness and peace. Its blessed precincts offered us a profound healing experience, to be human with others and ourselves too. We learned that the lover of God must love the God within His brothers and sisters. This holy instant brought a gentle smile, as if a rosebud sat on our lips. We settled comfortably in the shared shelter of a deeper togetherness, and a loving union with God. It was a heartwarming, heart-healing, shared tranquillity. We felt interconnected and interrelated with all that IS. In unification we experienced timelessness and the most authentic spirituality, far beyond any religion or theology! What I have narrated above are spontaneous feelings recollected in tranquillity! O, how delightful and relishing is the bliss of solitude! Present moment, wonderful moment! A flower grows under my foot with every step I take! Peace! It is wordless prayer, in which a voice deep within, speaks to us from the depths of our own silence. The very
same voice spoke to Moses from the burning bush. It was when Moses was in the deep silence of the desert that God came to him as an intense and abiding presence, and the harsh landscape took on a new and fresh beauty and grace. The way God came to Moses changed his life forever, for it set his silence on fire just as it did mine. When the Holy Spirit within a person’s inner, still spirit prayers, one is in serene, gentle, tender and profound communion with God. When one lives continually on the edge of nothingness, not asking, not seeking anything, one’s empty solitude is charged with the glory of God’s Presence! “It is Thou!” “I just live!” These two verbal trinities produce different sounds of silence, but their meaning is the same. Lord, help me to live in the joy of your Presence, so much so that, when I see a wild flower, or an onion or a watermelon in the desert of everyday living, in the heart of the marketplace, I actually see YOU!

Corageous Popes John XXIII, John Paul II Are Saints Vatican City: Popes John XXIII and John Paul II were canonised by Pope Francis Sunday in the Vatican City, the country's official news network News.VA said. For the first time in history, two popes have been elevated to the vele of sauinthood at the same time. Pope Francis read the formal proclamation at the canonisation mass in Latin. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Francis' predecessor who abdicated on grounds of ill health, was also present at the canonisation mass. Pope Francis termed the two saints as "men of courage" and placed relics, a container of blood from John Paul and a piece of skin from John near the altar. The Vatican confirmed the sainthood on the two former popes Sunday in front of some 800,000 pilgrims who packed the St.Peter's Square during the two-hour ceremony. The mass was attended by a hundred foreign delegates comprising of heads of state, government and royal dignitaries along with members of the Christian church. Notable guests included Floribeth Mora, who claims John Paul II cured her of a serious brain condition. Of Polish origin, Saint John Paul II served from October 16, 1978, until Vatican City: Two 20th-century popes who changed the course of the Catholic Church became saints Sunday as Pope Francis honored John XXIII and John Paul II in a delicate balancing act aimed at bringing together the conservative and progressive wings of the church. As if to drive the message of unity home, Francis invited retired Pope Benedict XVI to join him on the altar of St. Peter's Square, the first time a reigning and retired pope have celebrated Mass together in public in the 2,000-year history of the church.

Saint John XXIII, an Italian, served from October 28, 1958, to his death in 1963 and was the first pope to take the pontifical name of "John" upon election in more than 500 years. He is famous for his efforts during the Holocaust in World War II to save Jewish people and the refugees from the Nazis. He also became the first pope since 1870 to make pastoral visits in his Diocese of Rome, when he visited children infected with polio, a reformatory school for juvenile delinquents. He also fought for human rights and opposed the idea of a divorce. In 1962, he was named "Man of the Year" by Time magazine, the first ever pope to be so named. Mary Is The Sacrament Of God
I
t is noted that there’s a powerful worldwide revival and enthusiasm emerging in the blogosphere and internet on Marian devotion to Our Lady, the rosary, prayers and books on the Virgin Mary. Scholars who had once shown little importance to the rosary, are now, in religious exercise giving honor to Christian virtues attached to Mary ever Virgin, and the priceless offering of the rosary inspired by God. St. Louis De Montfort wrote a book ‘The Secret of the Rosary’ in 1954. By 1980 the book went into its 18th printing with an outreach of 1,050,000 copies. A TV script written in October 10, 1955 stated, it was the ‘Age of Mary’. From the Old Testament to the New, Sacred Scripture and ancient traditions declare Mary as Mother of Christ and attach importance to her role in the plan of salvation. As Mother of the Redeemer, the Virgin Mary had made a total commitment to be the handmaid of the Lord. By her free faith she became an instrument of human salvation.
Mary is the Sacrament of God. It is prophetically mentioned by St. Jerome, Epist., 22, 21 that, “Death is through Eve, life through Mary. “ The Mother of God is Christ’s sacrament, as she is uniquely receptive to all the sacrifice expected of her. Under the will of divine providence Our Holy Mother has been entrusted by God with the mission to provide the universal Church and her faithful a bond of love, protection and unity.

A Look At Some Electoral And Political Reforms That We Have Comfortably Overlooked
T
by Vikas Madle
here are several factors that raise questions about the Indian elec tions being fair and transparent, and a proper and well thought out implementation of Electoral Reforms is the need of the hour to answer those questions. There are no scheduled revisions of the electoral rolls and non-existence of a mechanism to check whether the revised electoral rolls (additions/deletions) have been carried out in a rightful manner or not raise doubts over fair voting. The officials conducting the revision are not from the Election Commission (EC) but from the local state government departments or other government services, and such officials are very much susceptible to the influence of existing political powers. This needs to change and the EC has to get the revision of the electoral rolls done regularly by a specially appointed independent agency which is answerable only to the EC and not to the political powers or any ruling classes. Again, there has to be a clear policy for checking the individual’s eligibility for registration as a voter and that independent agency should be solely responsible for either enrolling or deleting the voters from the list. There is no political party in India that has come out in the open expressing

their views in this matter with conviction. However, some parties blame the others of minority appeasement in the name of ‘Secularism’ and other parties blame these self certified secular parties of stoking up the communal fire to consolidate their Vote Bank among the majority community. Instead of blaming each other, the focus has to be brought to the real issues at hand. There is a need for progress of every citizen to make India a developed nation and that can happen only with good and thoughtful governance; but the reality is otherwise. The politicians’ mantra of “Divide and Rule” needs to change to “Unite and Deliver” to make India a world leader. So, what can be done? We need to educate ourselves, educate others, in fact we need to work on ensuring that every Indian gets educated. By education, I do not mean just schooling. We need to educate people on how to be responsible citizens of this country, to educate the younger brigade of our country to come forward to speak their minds, analyze and understand the issues facing us, seek and suggest new ideas, discuss the possible solu-
tions to be implemented etc. If we can galvanize and bring more and more people together in doing this – right from the youth of this country to the senior citizens across all sections, surely we are looking at a more prosperous and peaceful India in the days to come.

“A Tryst with Destiny”
O
n February 11, Cardinal Gracias issued a letter to the Catholic community in anticipation of the general election. He laid down the social and economic context of the election and the Church’s concerns. He prayed for, among other things, a leadership that would “uphold the secular character of our nation and promote communal harmony and a spirit of inter-religious dialogue and understanding”. While Christian representation remains miniscule in politics when compared to the other communities, some community members have taken a more active role in politics than ever before, ahead of India’s most bitterly fought general election in decades, and organized “Meet your candidate” event in different pockets of Mumbai for our community to interact with the respective candidates and know their party stand on different issues and in particular their stand on our community. The important thing they needed to understand while organizing these events is Cardinals letter and the Constitution of India and how the democratic values need to be safeguarded. However it was noticed that this is what was not understand - that we need to uphold the secular character of our nation and elect a stable non communal government and for this we need to give a non communal party the maximum votes rather than making a deal with the local candidate and going off the mark into issue that are the responsibility of the MLA and Cooperator as in this election it is the party that matters and not the local candidate or local issues and while these community members had taken it upon themselves to represent our community by taking an active part in this election and many in the community looked up to them for guidance there remain doubts on whether these active community members speak for our community or themselves and actually represent their community as a whole. The community members who did

Don Aguiar “Is the growth of big business, the making of huge profits, the achievement of high production - what we seek? Or is it the quality of life for the majority in terms of affordable basic goods and services and the freedom to take forward the cultural aspirations of our plural social groups that make up India?" understand Cardinals letter had brought an interesting discussion in our community on what constitutes human development and how it is to be achieved by interacting with a few NGO’s and with Fr Cedric Prakash. This is very apt because it puts in stark contrast current views - "The Gujarat Model”- That in the face of a global resurgence of the right we must be alert to all its extremist forms. We are committed to anti fascism and must not allow our country to abdicate morality. On the communal party, insistence on leveraging development over other issues one would say – Has India become so desperate for rapid economic growth that she has forgotten basic humanity? It seems that in the race towards higher GDP many are willing to inject themselves and their following with the steroids of bigotry or ruthlessness. Ethics be dammed. A couple of days after Easter and just a day before Mumbai went to polls; the principal of St. Xavier's College sent an email to his students to educate them on what he thought voters should keep in mind when casting their ballot and asked them “Is the growth of big business, the making of huge profits, the achievement of high production what we seek? Or is it the quality of life for the majority in terms of affordable basic goods and services and the freedom to take forward the cultural aspirations of our plural social groups that make up India?" and then advised them to choose wisely and support people
who pledge to work to take Human Development Indicators higher and who commit themselves to a pluralistic culture in diverse India and also posted it on the college website. This was also highlighted in major news and TV channels. It leaves no doubt that it rubbishes the central claims of the BJP's prime ministerial candidate on the "Gujarat model of development" His post came under harsh criticism, strong objection and attack with the climax being a complaint filed against him by the local BJP for allegedly violating the election code as well as the timing of the Principal's post (a day before Mumbai's polls) but the Principal stood by his post while most secular citizens backed him and said that without doubt, it is silly to accuse the Principal of having violated law, he was doing his duty in educating his students and asked the communal party why it did not take strong objections or attack Sanjaya Baru's publisher for releasing The Accidental Prime Minister in the midst of the election campaign as the Principal releasing his post at a later time would be meaningless. Much like the phrase: "Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does." It is no big deal that the Jesuit principal spoke about politics. Aspirants of the religious power of the pulpit and the aspirants to seats of governmental power have always sought each other out. Endorsement from the clergy is precisely what every political party hankers after, more so in a divisive and communally charged election campaign. That is why the mullahs from Jama Masjid endorse the Congress. That is why the Churches of Goa endorsed the BJP during the state elections two years ago and are presently endorsing a non communal party. With the Hindutva agenda, it is the Hindu clergy (if there were such a phrase) that the BJP seeks endorsement from.

Things Successful People Do In The First Hour Of The Workday
E
veryone has their unique method of prioritising, but all successful people stay focused when they start their day. This how they spend the first hour of their work day
The first hour of the workday is critical, since it can impact your productivity level and mindset for the rest of the day. Here are a few things successful people do in the first hour of the workday: They step back and reflect. It's important to take a moment to look at the big picture. "It's easy to jump in and 'just do it' when you get to work, but successful people look at their larger goals in order to better prioritize."
They acknowledge and plan for the tough projects. There are always difficult projects looming that get put aside. Address how you're going to attack them first thing so they don't hang over your head all day.
They greet the team. Good, successful bosses and employees are aware of their team, and they take the time to greet them first thing. It shows compassion and naturally builds rapport and camaraderie.
They don't address people conflict. Successful people know that timing is everything. If you need to resolve conflict with your peers or boss, don't engage first thing. Your colleagues are likely overwhelmed when they arrive to work, so you'll want to wait a few hours until everyone is more relaxed, which is usually after lunch.
They avoid distraction. The latest headline or office drama can cause anyone to be distracted, no matter how high up the chain you are. While the curiosity can be overwhelming, focused professionals inherently know when they're taking themselves off-track.
They write something that requires thought. Writing requires discipline, and research finds that willpower is at its peak early in the day, after a good breakfast. The first hour of the day can be a great time to write a well-crafted email introducing yourself to a new client, a proposal or report.
They relax. This one is difficult for most people, but successful individuals understand the importance of creating a few minutes of peace before jumping in. It helps you better approach the issues at hand. Taking a moment to stretch and breathe will help you make better decisions during this chaotic time of day.
They strategize. Successful people take a few minutes at the start of their workday to think about where their career or business should be going. Few people spend much time on these questions to begin with, let alone when their brains are fresh. But pursuing strategic clarity is a worthy objective. It's hard to get somewhere if you don't know where you're going. They check their to-do lists and calendars. You don't want to overwhelm yourself first thing in the morning, but it's important that you take a quick look at your to-do list and calendar to know what's ahead. Missing any early meetings or deadlines would likely cause stress and could ruin your entire day. They update their to-do lists and calendars. Without a plan, you can't spend your time wisely; but plans must be adaptable. Early in the day is the best time to update your schedule.

Inspiration! Benefits of Prayer Dale Carnegie
Lonely? Or Alone? It is common to hear people complain about being lonely around when expectations are running high. This is especially prevalent if someone has lost a loved one or broken up with a spouse or friend, or if the family is not together. People are finding less and less time for themselves and for others due to their chaotic lifestyles! You are lonely when you are cut off from others and you therefore think in your mind that you are lonely. Aloneness is when you are alone, but not lonely, for that is the best quality time to have with yourself.
E
ven if you are not a religious person by nature or training-even if you are an out-andout skeptic--prayer can help you much more than you believe, for it is a practical thing. I mean that prayer fulfills these three very basic psychological needs which all people share, whether they believe in God or not: 1. Prayer helps us to put into words exactly what is troubling us. It is almost impossible to deal with a problem while it remains vague and nebulous. Praying, in a way, is very much like writing our problems down on paper. If we ask help for a problem--even from God--we must put it into words. 2. Prayer gives us a sense of sharing our burdens, of not being alone. Few of us are so strong that we can bear our heaviest burdens, our most agonizing troubles, all
5 May 2014
by ourselves. Sometimes our worries are of so intimate a nature that we cannot discuss them even with our closest relatives or friends. Then prayer is the answer. Any psychiatrist will tell us that when we are pent-up and tense, and in an agony of spirit, it is therapeutically good to tell someone our troubles. When we can't tell anyone else--we can always tell God. 3.
Prayer puts into force an active principal of doing. It's a first step toward action.
I doubt if anyone can pray for some fulfillment, day after day, without benefiting from it--in other words, without taking some steps to bring it to pass. The world-famous scientist, Dr. Alexis Carrel, said, "Prayer is the most powerful form of energy one can generate." So why not make use of it? Call it God or Allah or Spirit--why quarrel with definitions as long as the mysterious powers of nature take us in hand?
When we believe that we are lonely we usually rush to deal with this unpleasant feeling with something outside of ourselves. It might be drinking alcohol, overeating, or going to see a therapist or friend to talk. Loneliness is a selfimposed negative emotion which, when you are caught in its rut, only breaks down all of the good things that come your way!! The mind is the core of everything in this world. Your extra food are just acting as painkillers; they are temporary, providing a mere patch. It does no good other than to help you forget about your pain for a while, while the root of the pain only goes deeper.
Do you know that? The Supreme Court has announced that any person who meets with a road accident can be taken to the hospital immediately. The hospital authorities must not ask for a police report to admit the person. It is the doctor’s duty to give first aid to the dying victim. The police can be informed later. — Jubel D'Cruz, Dombivili
