Christmas Celebration by Christian Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Members of Christian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) celebrated Christmas along with their family members on 20th December 2013 at Hotel Kohinoor Intercontinental, Andheri East. The occasion was graced with the presence and special Christmas messages by Bishop Bosco Phena of Mumbai Archdiocese and Mrs. Janet L. D’Souza, Vice Chairperson of Maharashtra State Minority Commission. Earlier Henry Lobo, Chairman welcomed the guests and participants. Members and their families enjoyed the spirit of Christmas with games, fun and frolic and exchanged greetings. —Ptotos: Ronida

United Christmas Program People from 10 different places came together to celebrate Christmas at the St Peter’s Church in Doddaballapur, Bangalore on the 22nd of December. For the first time, different Christian denominations and different institutions run by the Christians are coming together to celebrate Christmas in Doddaballapur. Each of the churches presented a program on the theme of Christmas. Through songs, carols, dance and skits, the message of unity, love and peace was communicated to the people. A common prayer was conducted by Fr Mario from St Jude Church, Karahalli. Rev Sudheer from St Paul’s CSI Church gave the Christmas message that only when we have good heart, God’s name will be glorified.

Rise of Aam Aadmi Party

t was the seminal political development of the year that sent alarm bells ringing through the establishment while spawning a new mood of optimism among ordinary Indians who had started to lose faith in democratic change. AAP’s sensational debut in Delhi elections on the back of its promise to change the old ways of doing politics and usher in a new era of transparency and accountability got even hardened cynics talking. The buzz word became “change” replacing the familiar weary sense of hopelessness. Last year, who would have thought that a fledgling party with few resources and derided as a bunch of clowns and rabble-rousers would soon be running Delhi. Although Arvind Kejriwal and his team always maintained that they were going to cause an “earthquake’’, privately, even they must have been surprised by the scale of their achievement. The impact of AAP’s triumph is already evident with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party scrambling to take a leaf from its book. Suddenly, the aam aadmiis every politician’s darling. The games have just begun. Political chess in Delhi which was being played over the course of last year has finally taken a climaxing turn. This comes as a surprise to many. It will be interesting to see how far it gets in its motive to wipe off corruption and secure basic minimum necessities for every common man with congress on its side. BJP on the other hand, is calling this combination a farce to the public and a disservice on AAP’s part by aligning with the “corrupt Congress”. AAP has released a video through its Facebook page where it drew a clear line between itself and keeping BJP and Congress as opposition. The party highlighted that Congress will get no ministries and they will still come after corrupt ministers from both BJP and Congress. The video is on its way to getting viral all over and people are becoming a party to this unprecedented charged up atmosphere. For now BJP as well as Congress finds itself in a position of fix because AAP’s actions might reverberate through the country and it just might spoil their 2014 plans too. General elections are due in the first half of next year, all over the country and BJP would have liked to have re-elections in Delhi at that time, but this is a new possibility which no one had thought of. The game will get interesting in the coming few weeks when we try to count AAP’s promises vs. delivery and it will get heated up as 2014 draws nearer. For now, nobody knows what the future holds and there is so much to be focused on. The only thing about democracy that’s certain is that it is always interesting!

Vatican city: After reaching out to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics at Christmas, Pope Francis now wants to get better acquainted with the faithful who live in his own backyard. From the new year a handful of Romans will be invited to celebrate morning mass with the pope inside the Vatican. The 77-year-old pontiff is wellknown for embracing the young, old and disabled when they gather in St Peter’s Square, or picking up the phone to make personal calls to individuals or families in distress. As the pope is also formally recognised as the bishop of Rome, he will have the chance to get to know the Catholics closest to him.

Muslim Anger As Indian Court Clears Modi

A court in Gujarat, western India, has cleared controversial Hindu leader and prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi of responsibility for the deadly Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002. The court yesterday rejected an appeal from Zakia Jafri who challenged an earlier verdict of not guilty, awarded to Modi and 59 others who were alleged to have played a key role in fomenting the riots. Jafri’s husband, who was a former parliamentarian at that time, was dragged out, hacked and burnt to death along with 68 others in a cluster of 29 bungalows and 10 apartment buildings housing mostly Muslims in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat state capital. “We are disappointed by the judgment. We had top lawyers to defend the case and there was enough evidence to prosecute Modi,” Father Cedric Prakash told ucanews.com. Muslim human rights activist Zubai Gopalani echoed the sentiment, and alleged that the lower courts in the state has been biased in anti-Muslim riot cases. “There is hope for justice for Muslims from the apex court only,'' he said.

Christian leader sees future PM in Jayalalithaa

Chennai: Christian leaders who took part in the Christmas celebrations organised by Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary on Saturday wished her all success in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and wished that she lead the nation after the elections. Speaking at the celebrations, the Chief Minister said the advent of Jesus Christ indicates peace, hope, happiness and charity to all. “If one has to achieve a goal, the person needs conviction and a vision for achieving the objective. Above all, what we need is unshakeable faith in the Lord and that is what Jesus Christ taught us all,” she added. Narrating an anecdote, Jayalalithaa said, “faith in the Lord can create miracles. We should live for worthy goals and for that the Lord has given this human birth to us.” M Prakash, Bishop, Synod of the Independent Churches of India and chairman of the Tamil Nadu Minorities Commission, recalled the welfare measures being implemented by the government headed by Jayalalithaa. He said the day is not far away then she would be leading the country. “Let us all pray that Jayalalithaa be the Prime Minister after the Lok Sabha elections,” he added. Bishop of Church of South India, V Devasahayam, referred to the salient features of the Vision 2023 released by Jayalalithaa and said only such a visionary leader could lead the country to prosperity. Archbishop George Antonysamy recalled Jayalalithaa’s letter to the PM seeking SC status for the Dalit Christians and said she should further pursue it till it is achieved. Christians constitute 8 per cent of the State’s population.

New hope for 2014 As the curtain comes down on 2013, and we prepare to usher in the new year, the question uppermost in the minds of all concerned citizens is what will 2014 hold out for the common man. Will it be another year of scams, high inflation , rising prices , crime , insecurity for women and children ,collapse of law and order and total unconcern for the aam admi? Or, a bright and prosperous new year?. In such a bleak scenario however, there appears to be some hope and light at the end of the tunnel as we see the emergence of a new India with the ‘Aam Admi’ party in power in the country’s capital , and their promises to clean the Augean stables with their 18-point agenda. We will hopefully witness a paradigm shift in governance with the doing away of the hydra -headed monster of corruption, the trappings of power and arrogance, the end of dynastic rule ,immunity from the law, and justice for all .Until such time we will continue to pray for the success our leaders.

Church Tribunal Should Set Priorities The news item captioned “Families breaking up a big problem for the Church”, which appeared in the Hindustan Times daily on 23rd December 2013 was informative and thought provoking. It is indeed alarming to note that the number of couples approaching the Archdiocesan Tribunal of Mumbai Diocese for annulments of their marriage has increased to about 120 cases per year. However, the reason for seeking annulment of marriage is not only that today women are more educated and career minded and that they are now more assertive. There are also petitions seeking decree for annulment of marriage involving fraud by one of the spouses. When consent of the other person to the marriage is obtained by concealing vital facts about oneself, then according to Vatican’s Canon 1098, it amounts to fraud and if the fraud is proved, the marriage becomes null and void from the beginning. There are quite many cases pending with the Archdiocesan Tribunal of Mumbai Diocese involving fraud by a spouse. The Tribunal should have regular sittings and take up such cases for hearing on priority, as there is very little scope for adjustments and reconciliation.

Parish Portability I feel sad that the parishioners are considered as consumers and the divine sacraments as consumables ( the Secular Citizen november 18, 2013 ) in the aricle captioned " parish portabilty ". The Church is the body of Christ and the faithful are the members of that body. The reasons on which the proposal is made are 1 the unhappiness of parishioners in attending Mass in a particular church 2. Receiving Communion at the hands of a particular priest 3 Soporific sermon by priest in a parish. The aim seems to be better satisfaction about these for the parishioner. But where is the guarantee that the parishioner will get all such satisfaction as he/ she wants to derive ,in the new parish.? Can we ignore our position as members of the one Body of Christ and compare ourselves with electricty/gas consumers.? The Church wants a relationship between the parish priest and the parishioners. The priest has a duty to cater to all spiritual needs of his parishioners,through personal contact ,visits and other means. The priest are from our own homes and some have the weaknesses as we laity too have.Loyalty and closeness to a parish church will help growth of spiritual and social activities. Registration based on the geographical boundaries fixed by the authorities is necessary. However when a parishioner moves out ,he / she is permitted to join a new parish. The Catholic Church is not a democratic organization where decisions can be based on majority votes. It is basically a Body constituted or established by Jesus Christ and continues to function under Apostolic authority. I am aware that in few matters which are purely unconnected with spirituality or religious dogmas ,though more consultation and involvement with the laity are recommended by Vatican II, opposition or non co-operation by some authorities exists. This aspect needs considerstion. Let our criticism be useful for unity and spiritual growth and not one that encourages division and spiritual lethargy. —K.C.Thomas

I agree with the findings of Shri Ladislaus D souza that during wedding or baptism ceremonies,the presence of the Eucharist and the need for silence and the decorum for the holy place are simply ignored. The parish priest and the parish council seem to be interested in collecting some money in the form of rent ,electricity etc ignoring the holiness of the place and the decorum required in such place. There should be some guide lines for permitting cameramen and such employees( or contractors)' The concerned diocesan authorities are requested to issue such guide lines for all the churches in the diocese to avoid the embarassment and to keep up the standard of holiness of the church. —K.C.Thomas

The wonders of the celestial universe continue to baffle scientists, despite the tremendous progress made in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. The mysterious ‘Star of Bethlehem’ is just one case which has posed a challenge to modern-day scientists, who have no answers to the biblical account in Mathew’s gospel which mentions 2 sightings of the star –one, before the wise men of the East began their journey, and the other which led them on their journey, and stood still at the place where the child Jesus was born . While scientists are still struggling to offer a satisfactory and convincing explanation for this extraordinary astronomical phenomenon even after 2000 years of its appearance, the secular media has not hesitated to debunk the event as a literary creation by Mathew to put forward a theological idea. And after the controversial infancy narrative ‘ Jesus of Nazareth’ by Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, the Magi ( 3 wise men ) could also be another work of fiction rather than a historical reality. Nevertheless, despite these controversies, the symbolic star continues to adorn the churches and homes of Christians every Christmas, even after 2000 years, as a symbol of enlightenment and joy, culminating with the feats of the Epiphany on January 6 , popularly known as the feast of the 3 kings.

The New Year offers an opportunity to start things on a fresh slate. It is the period for letting go of the old to make way for the new. If you have been going round in circles previously, it is time to let go of the energies that have kept you stuck. If you have been distracted along the way last year, it is time to once again set your priorities straight. Thus, the turn of a new year represents hope. Hope is energy that renews you. Second, rise above your desire for revenge, and write your letter of forgiveness to them. No need to mail it, just recall the hurt or violation, write about your feelings. End the letter with your statement of forgiveness. Just this simple act of writing a forgiveness letter can often grant you freedom from your negative thoughts and give you increased happiness.

December: A Month of Generosity The end of the year is a time for giving – a time to donate your time, your money if you can, your skills, your positive energy, your attention – to others to help make their life a little better. Each day, find one opportunity to give something of yourself to help another – and notice your feelings.

In Conclusion For the best results, remind yourself of each month’s happiness strategy by adding these topics to your calendar – every day of each month. Then, each day of the year, find creative ways to act on these strategies – and enjoy your

Vatican II and Catholic Church

he Vatican II Council had brought in many benevolent changes in the Church. It had, in fact, started the renewal of the Church. We have discussed below three main aspects in which we can mainly see these changes happened with special reference to India. They reflect our lived experience:

1. Church’s concern for the poorThe 2nd Vatican Council had enkindled lot of hope for the poor and marginalized in our dioceses. In the early days, we found some initiative being taken by the church to empower the poor and homeless. We had a few instances of allotting house sites and providing help to build the houses for the homeless. The “food for work” schemes initiated at that time also helped. The funding agencies like Misereor (Germany) and Caritas India rendered financial assistance for these schemes. This assistance really helped in the beginning. But as the time passed by, these efforts were rendered ineffective as they created more dependents than empowering the people to stand on their own legs. This made our leaders to realize that it was better to teach people to stand on their own legs than doling out help. Spreading of knowledge, awareness through education was the best remedy. As a matter of fact we have good educational institutions run by the Church establishment and other Catholic bodies. But as per the general perception of laypersons, the institutions in higher education, care only for those who could give them donations. Meritorious and deserving students are mostly sidelined. Hence our precious and scanty educational resources are wasted on undeserving or are hijacked by rich and powerful.

As a result, the middle class and poor students, particularly from catholic community are deprived of quality edu-

Some disgruntled youth venture out to seek jobs even in lower cadres abroad – in Gulf countries. Able bodied persons remaining out of the country, leaving only women and children back home, weakens the catholic community politically and socially, though their earnings from abroad create a temporary illusion of financial well-being.

2. The role of the LaityAfter the Vatican II, Lay People were happy because they believed that they became “participators in the function of Christ: priest, prophet and king” and they had a hope of having “an active part of their own in the life and action of the Church”. They were proud to think that “their action within the Church communities is so necessary that without it the apostolate of the pastors will frequently be unable to obtain its full effect”. As a result, Lay People started participating in liturgy, they thought

they got an active role in the administration of the parish becoming members of the Parish Assembly, Parish Pastoral Council, Parish Finance Committee etc. As far as the pastoral aspect is concerned the laity has participated in ward leadership in the Church community leading to social and cultural integration. Extraordinary Ministers for distribution of communion, Lay Theologians in a few cases and Lay Catechists have helped. The Basic Christian Communities have yielded some, though peripheral, results. Further the laity, under the guidance of the Church, has formed organisations like Catholic Sabha, Youth Movements and lay Women’s Councils. This has helped in (Contd.. on p. 16)

These are the issues at the center of a conference scheduled for March next year in Thailand. It will bring together top international Catholic businessmen. The Asian Conference on the Vocation of the Business Leader in the New Evangelization seeks to strengthen Catholics' faith and to examine the dilemmas facing Catholic business leaders in an uncertain world economy. The conference will take place March 20-22, at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. The event is organized by the International Catholic Union of Business Executives (UNIAPAC), in collaboration with the Thailand-based Catholic Business Executives Group and the Thailand-based Catholic Young Executives Society. Joseph Prachub Trinikorn, the chairman and coordinator of the business executives' group, said that Catholic social teaching has not flourished in Catholic businesses, and as a result, many businesses have faced "crisis, insolvency, and bankruptcy through bad practices of greed and corruption." A Special Day for the Church in Mangalore New Tomb for Servant of God Raymond F. C. Mascarenhas

ecember 16th 2013 was indeed a special day for the Church in Mangalore. In St. Sebastian’s Church Bendur – the mortal remains of the Servant of God Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhas were exhumed, identified and transferred from its original place in the nave of the Church, to a newly erected tomb. The meticulously prepared and long ceremony began at 8. 30 a m was presided over by Rt. Rev Aloysius Paul D’Souza the Bishop of Mangalore. The select gathering present for the ceremony included Rev. Msgr. Denis Prabhu, Vicar General of Mangalore; Fr Henry Sequeira, the Episcopal Delegate; Fr. John Mendonca, the Promoter of Justice; Fr. Vincent Saldanha, the Notary; members of the Historical Commission: Fr. J. B. Saldanha, Fr. Peter Mascarenhas SMM, Fr. George Painadath; Fr. Cedric Prakash SJ the great grand nephew of the Servant of God, Medical experts and other special invitees. Welcoming the Bishop, the dignitaries and other invitees, Sr. Wilberta, the Superior General of the Bethany Congregation said it was a special moment of grace not only for Bethany but

Sr Lillis, the Postulator of the Cause of the Beatification of the Servant of God then gave a brief history of Msgr. Raymond. Bishop Aloysius highlighted the virtues of Msgr. Denis Prabhu then read the Letter from the Vatican approving the process of the day It is important to recall, that the Servant of God Raymond Mascarenhas was a holy priest who served the poor and the marginalized selflessly till his death on December 23rd 1960. founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Little Flower of Bethany (Bethany Sisters) -who today work all over India and abroad in several fields-specially in the education of the girl child and in women empowerment programmes. The Cause of the Canonization of the Servant of God Mgr. RFC Mascarenhas was introduced in 2008, by the Bishop of Mangalore. The newly built tomb now has greater access to the public for prayer and veneration. It is a fitting tribute to the man who built the Church in 1914 (exactly one hundred years ago) and served the parishioners there, as a compassionate pastor for seventeen long years!

Stany Miranda S.J., former Rector of St. Joseph Seminary and later Director of Fatima Retreat House always gave his whole-hearted support & encouragement right from the start. In the year 1992, the Karnataka Jesuit Society, came forward with 4.38 acres of land on lease at Assaigoli, Konaje, wherein new buildings, Workshops, canteen, hostel building, open air stage, administrative building were put up with the generous donations from Benefactors & Well wishers. Hundreds of students have passed out from the Xavier Industrial Training Centre (XITC), Assaigoli & have been working in MNC’s namely MRPL, ISRO, MICO, HMT etc. etc. How time flies, it will be 30 years and on 3rd December, 2014 there is a proposal to celebrate this happy occasion. Normally, lay people are successful entrepreneurs and are generally involved with personal affairs & establishing business houses for personal gains & profit. It was the 3 lay leaders as mentioned earlier with a capital of Rs. 3,000/- came forward to start the Project without any profit motive to render honorary services to the poor & downtrodden members of the Society. JJV hails from Kapikad, Bejai, Mangalore. He had his early education in St. Aloysius College. He is an advo-

cate by profession, has worked as a Labour Relations Officer in Syndicate Bank Ltd. H.O. Manipal. Later he worked as a Labour Consultant. He established Canara Chemical Industries, a SSI unit at Baikampady. He was also a successful builder. At present he is a Notary Public & a Registrar of Marriages. However, the new liturgy has given a positive meaning to the majority since it is conducted in their own mother tongue and hence all well-meaning faithful participate in the prayers vehemently and devoutly. However, much of the grouse for the laity comes from the administration of temporal goods of the Church: Their role in the church administration is only advisory, with only right to suggestions; in the financial matters laity has no powers, clergy is the sole administrator; laity is supposed to donate for the parish developmental work with no privilege of overseeing and controlling such work even when there is misuse and diversion of church fund, land and property; the laity is generally mute spectators with no powers to stop such misuse; they cannot participate in the administration of schools, auditoriums etc. run by the parish though they were built out of their contributions. Bodies like Parish Council, Finance Committee and the exercise of presenting annual accounts are all routine matters with no meaningful participation by laity.

3. Dialogue with Religions in the Indian context: Vatican II enjoins Catholics not to reject anything which “is true and holy” in religions around them. They shall “while witnessing to their own faith and way of life acknowledge, preserve and encourage the spiritual and moral truths found among non-Christians, also their social life and culture”. In India, Catholics being in the minority, should all the more, create an atmosphere which is cordial and of mutual respect. This exhortation of the Vatican Council was well taken by our people, since cordial and respectful relations with other religions had already existed. Liturgy in vernacular, celebration of

Holy Mass in Indian rite and inculturation have further helped dialogue with other religions. Greeting during the feasts and festivals of other religions and felicitating in their social functions, giving company in tribulations, illness, family mourning etc. were considered to be beneficial to build bridges between two communities of different religions. But now-a-days since the onset of “hindutva” spirit for political gains this cordial relation between Hindus and Christians has thinned down. Now no one is interested in understanding and appreciating one another’s religion. Religion has really become a political tool. As a result, it is a real challenge for the Catholics to continue the dialogue in the society at large. Some of the political leaders/political parties with majoritarian agenda would never let their followers to have peace in the society, lest the peace would damage their prospects for political dominance.

4. What are the future prospects for further meaningful reception of the Council (action plan): To better the economic condition of the poor, co-operative societies together with the self-help groups, are the best tools. If operated prudently and with care co-operative set up would empower the poor and marginalized. But training of good co-operative leaders is a must for successful operation of these groups. Greater transparency is needed in our church schools and educational institutions. Many a time, the allegation of corruption against Church administration may not be true. But such allegation have stemmed out of non-transparency. The laity need be given a greater say in the management of these bodies. Clergy shall refrain from manning the positions like teachers, principals, directors in hospitals etc. where duly qualified laity can be appointed. Selection of students in schools and colleges should only be on merit with a particular bias towards poor children among dalits and marginalized.

Apostolic lay organisations like Catholic Sabha, Women’s Councils, Youth Movements and other Catholic NGOs shall be encouraged to imbue the spirit of Vatican II. The laity shall be trained as lay leaders. Such duly trained/qualified lay leaders shall be entrusted with the administration work in the Church limiting the role of the clergy for spiritual and pastoral work. The laity shall be involved in real decision making in the realm of administration and finances with transparency as hallmark. In this 21st century, except for matters of faith, democratic administration shall be encouraged in parishes. The question of “hindutva” in India can be dealt with only politically, no other process will help. Hence more and more lay youth shall be encouraged to participate in the political and civil service arena of the nation. Some efforts, though empirical, are already being made by the church encouraging youths to contest in elections for local bodies like panchayats and municipalities and training laity for IAS, IPS and IFS examinations. But such efforts shall be whole-hearted and intensified with academic and financial back-up, where necessary, until results are achieved. The goal should be occupying higher levels of state and national positions. The Church in India is viewed, in certain quarters, as a foreign entity and less national. We know it is an unfair view and far from truth. Church is much more patriotic than any of the so called national organizations. However prevalence of such a view is a reality and we have to get people shed this view by integrating ourselves more and more into national mainstream. Much more inculturation/indianization would definitely help. But change should not be for the sake of change. It should be genuine and well-meaning. Our faith should be deep in the teachings of Jesus Christ and not in the outward social and cultural appearance. But such appearance shall be conducive to easy mingling with the local communities. O

Tell yourself: “I am the ‘Master of My Mind’ and I choose to think positive, lifeaffirming thoughts.” Let your body lead. When you start to ruminate about something, catch yourself and immediately move your body in an outrageous way. I know, I know, this might sound a bit crazy, but stay with me. Do something wacky with your body. For example, if you have a tendency to worry when in bed (before going to sleep or upon waking), the minute you start thinking troublesome thoughts, you might: Go to the bathroom and make goofy faces in the mirror. Sit up and shake your head from side to side while holding a big smile on your face. Get up and start dancing a happy dance (if you share a bed with someone, please warn him or her ahead of time . The quickest way to shift your state of mind is to shift your body from the position it’s in once you start to worry. Try it and experience the magic for yourself. See yourself as a Warrior. Take a few moments to find an image of yourself as a Warrior. You might see yourself sitting stick straight on the back of a beautiful white horse, dressed like a king or queen, holding a golden sword, armed and ready to slice away at any worrisome thoughts. Or, you might imagine yourself as a big, majestic, bird that

drops any negative thoughts into a cleansing lake where they’re transformed into positive ones that allow you to feel strong, courageous, and resourceful. Then, see yourself flying back from the lake with a renewed determination to be an even stronger Warrior. To find your own image, close your eyes, take several slow, deep breaths, and ask your subconscious mind to gently place an image in front of you. Go ahead. Do it now… When you find yourself worrying about something, focus on your image so you can return your mind to a more resourceful state. Do something for someone else. Sometimes the fastest way to shift from “Worryah to Warrior” is to get out of your own head by giving support to someone else. I’ve had days when I’ve been strangled by worry and literally forgot what I was worrying about after spending time on the phone with someone who needed comfort, advice, or a listening ear. It always happens. Being a Warrior for someone else will instantly make you a Warrior for yourself.
