Sr. Mary Vas, CFMFS Recipient Of The Pro - Ecclesia Et Pontifice Medal. Highest Medal

he Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Latin: For the Church and the Pope) medal is an award of the Roman Catholic Church. It is also known as the “Cross of Honor”. The medal was instituted by Pope Leo XIII (July 17, 1888. “Quod Singulari”) in memory of his golden sacerdotal jubilee. It is currently given for distinguished service to the church by lay people and the religious. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity and the religious by the Papacy. On Saturday June 21 2014, a Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated by His Excellency Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio and concelebrated by Rev. Msgr. Romanus Mbena, Rev. Msgr. Marco Sprizzi, Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles Vas, (Brother of Sr. Mary Vas and Director of Sangeet Abhinay Academy, Mumbai) and Rev. Fr. Royal Anthony (Education Director Catholic Diocese of Bareilly) at the Chapel of the Nunciature New Delhi.

The other distinguished guests present for the function included Mr. Pius Vas (Advocate, Bombay High Court), his son Mr. Jason Vas (Solicitor), the niece and nephew of Sr. Mary viz. Ms. Emmy Vas and Mr. Sunil D’Souza respectively. Also present were Mrs. Shanti D’Souza, Mrs. Lucy and Mr. Peter Gabriel with their respective families. Also present for the occasion were other Sisters of the Community of Sr. Mary, her Provincial Sr. Ivy and Superior Sr. Lincy. Mr. Pius Vas, the youngest brother of Sr. Mary spoke during the felicitation programme and expressed his gratitude to the Holy See and the Nuncio and heartfelt wishes to Sr. Mary. He recollected the humble beginnings of the family and beautifully expressed as to how the parish from where the family began viz. Holy Family Church has become a reality in the life of the Vas Family, all because of the good works and pious life led by their parents. The speech was so touching that it made the whole atmosphere in the library of the Nunciature very emotional. —Rons Bantwal

Let's Not Repeat The Galileo Fiasco

n the 16th and 17th centuries, advances in as tronomy came faster than people -- including Church leaders -- could understand the new ideas and adapt to them. That was among the reasons that Galileo was condemned by the Inquisition. Church leaders had not had (or taken) time to reconcile the newly discovered facts of science with traditional religious views. So, they did what we all do in such situations: they became more vehement in holding to BY FR WILLIAM GRIMM the old. It remains one of the more embarrassing events of Church history. It is a safe assumption that we will increasingly find ourselves saddled with outof-date scientific views and teachings based upon them as scientific progress accelerates and broadens. And it is an equally safe assumption that we will either ignore new discoveries and understandings in the sciences or try to make them fit old prejudices until we are forced to admit that demonstrated reality must take precedence over venerable intellectual presuppositions. For example, astronomers had added such planetary acrobatics as epicycles (basically loop-the-loops) to the ancient Greek idea of the universe in order to keep up with observed phenomena. But, the complications became so involved that when Copernicus presented a sun-centered picture that simplified it all, the Ptolemaic system was doomed. In fact, the system presented by Copernicus, in a work he withheld from publication until after his death in 1543 because he feared the sort of treatment Galileo eventually received, was less accurate than the traditional one, but it was clear that though adjustments were needed, it was closer to the observable facts. (The adjustment entailed abandoning the prejudice that planetary motion must be circular because the circle is a "perfect" form. Planetary orbits are actually ellipses, or squashed circles.) (Contd.. from p. 3) Eventually, of course, we came to accept that the Earth is not the unmoved center of the solar system, though it was only in 1992 that Pope John Paul II declared that Galileo was right in saying that the sun is the center of the solar system and that the Roman authorities who condemned him as being "suspect of heresy" were wrong. The Catholic Church has a better record when it comes to scientific theories of evolution. Perhaps in part because of embarrassment over the Galileo affair, Catholic teaching has been pretty much at ease with the ideas of Darwin and his successors and has taken time to see how traditional teachings might have to be adapted or understood in new ways. Instead of using biblical accounts to describe the how of creation, we use science to describe it and biblical wisdom to understand it. Today, where might we find leaders of the Church struggling to maintain disciplines, ideas and practices based on out-of-date scientific (including social scientific) ideas? Where might advances in the sciences be moving faster than our ability to evaluate, moderate, change, abandon or re-affirm old attitudes? Clearly, issues of reproductive biology and other life issues present contemporary examples. A frequent response has been to hold to the old. Sometimes that may be done as a stopgap while exploring options; at other times it is done as a way of forestalling reevaluation. However, as St Augustine pointed out as early as the fifth century, teachings that fail to take into account the most up-to-date scientific knowledge merely bring believers and faith itself into disrepute. Issues of birth control, fertility treatment, in vitro fertilization, sperm and egg donation, surrogate pregnancy and such are "hot button" issues that are often dealt with by recourse to concepts of natural law and philosophy that do not take into account modern knowledge and thus leave the Church open to opposition not because its

Or, we may find that what was thought to be sure and based upon reality has actually relied upon inaccurate data for its justification; justification that no longer makes sense and merely draws the Church, its teachings, teachers and believers into futile battles with reality.

But M A Khalid of the All-India Milli Council said the government should have announced it earlier, as it seems like a sop before the assembly elections. Many said the state government should not flinch from defending the decision in the apex court, if challenged. Minority affairs minister Arif Naseem Khan said, "This is not the first time Muslims have been given reservations in India. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had provided reservations to economically poor Muslims, and Muslims in Maharashtra too needed it."

Modi Meets Goa Archbishop, Hindu Leader Unhappy Panaji: Prime M i n i s t e r N a r e n d r a Modi’s meeting with Goa’s Archbishop this week is proof of his “minority appeasement”, a leader of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) said Thursday. Charudatta Pingale of HJS, which organised a seven-day (June 20-26) Hindu convention near the temple town of Ponda, 35 km from here, also accused the BJP government in Goa of appeasing minorities. “During his visit to Goa, Modi found time to meet the Archbishop but not the Shankaracharya of the region or any Hindu religious head. This is nothing but minority appeasement,” Pingale said. Modi met Archbishop Fr. Filipe Neri Ferrao at the Raj Bhavan here. The meeting came against the backdrop of a subtle pre-election campaign by the Goa Church against the BJP, especially Modi. The campaign has somewhat soured the newly formed bonhomie of the BJP with the Church in Goa, where more than 25 percent of the people are Catholic. Modi’s meeting with the Archbishop was crammed in between several functions organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the state government and the Indian Navy. IANS

Pope Francis: Communists ‘stole’ the flag of Christianity

Francis, whose criticisms of unbridled capitalism have caused many to brand him a Marxist, said in an interview published Sunday that communists “stole” Christian ideals. The 77-year-old pontiff was asked during his interview with local Il Messaggero newspaper about a blog in the Economist magazine by a journalist who said the Pope sounded a lot like a Leninist because he often criticized capitalism and called for reform of the global economic system. “I can only say that the communists have stolen our flag. The flag of the poor is Christian. Poverty is at the center of the Gospel,” said the Pope. He was referring to passages in the Bible which state the need to help the poor.

Pope Francis has often called for people to share their wealth with the poor. “Communists say that all this is communism. Sure, twenty centuries later. So when they speak, one can say to them: ‘but then you are Christian,'” he said laughing. The Pope also said that global politics is mired in corruption and bribery, adding that there is a deficiency in social work in society. In regards to religious doctrine, the Pope said that the gospel cannot be understood without understanding poverty, and to be poor before God means poverty of the spirit. Earlier this month, Pope Francis said that wealth from financial speculation and speculation on commodities was scandalous and compromised the poor’s access to food.

The Admission Criterion Ever since marks secured at qualifying examinations were made the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sole criterionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for admission to professional and higher education courses in the early 1990s, the pressure on students to obtain higher marks, by any means whatever, has increased enormously. As a result, students began choosing subjects and courses in which they were sure they could secure better marks. Since students started making a beeline for these disciplines, other disciplines began losing students and faced the grim prospect of having to close down. To ensure their own survival, they too began awarding higher marks to students to attract larger numbers. Today, even subjects in which students rarely secured first class or distinction marks in the past are now giving over 90% marks to quite ordinary candidates. Thus, while the number of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;geniusesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; securing over 90% marks in different subjects keeps rising year after year, we find that educational standards in our country keep falling even below those in many third world countries, as shown by reliable studies conducted by world bodies. This can also be verified by competent persons interviewing our exam toppers for job placements. The indiscriminate inflation of marks and percentages by Departments and Boards of education, ultimately leads to their cheapening and devaluation, leading to frustration for the truly bright students and a fall in standards of both teaching and learning. Higher marks and percentages give false impressions of academic success to students, parents and the public. There is no longer any incentive to study hard, to teach really well and to go beyond the routine syllabus. Rotelearning merely to secure better marks gets precedence in all courses, while creative thinking and originality get stifled. The only way to remedy the situation is to broaden the criteria for selection of students wishing to pursue

India Needs A “JP” Today!

idnight of June 25th / 26th 1975 surely ranks as one of the darkest chapters of any democracy, the world over. The state of emergency declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi not only suspended civil liberties of the ordinary citizen but censored free speech and suspended elections in the country for an indefinite period. There were several factors that led to the imposition of emergency; among them: growing dissent all over, a paralysing railway strike, court judgments declaring Indira’s election as null and void and very particularly mass mobilization of the people in Delhi and elsewhere protesting against an insensitive Government. A good part of the credit for the latter has to be given to one man Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) who on June 25th 1975 brought Delhi to a halt demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and calling for a total revolution (‘sampoorna kraanti’) while insisting that the military and the police disobey any unconstitutional and immoral orders given by the Government. In India the middle class, which is the backbone of the economy, is taxed at source (TDS) every month in all honesty. Unfortunately they are virtually forgotten by the government after retirement. BY FR. CEDRIC PRAKASH SJ In 1972, as a student of St. Xavier’s College (SXC), Mumbai I had the privilege of being one of the group of students to invite JP to SXC. This was a little before he went centre-stage. JP challenged our young and open minds, he insisted that the youth of India should show undaunted courage and unflinching commitment on national issues. He had already begun a movement in Bihar in which he called for social transformation, but in a non-violent way. Later on, in 1974, together with VM Tarkunde, he founded ‘Citizens for Democracy’ and in 1976, he founded the ‘People’s Union for Civil Liberties’ (PUCL). The main objective of both these organizations was to defend civil liberties. On June 5th, 1974, JP challenged a massive crowd at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna saying that “after 27 years of freedom, people of the country are wracked by hunger, rising prices, corruption…oppressed by every kind of injustice. We want a total revolution, nothing less than that”. Today, 39 years after that ‘infamous’ emergency, we once again seem to live in those ‘dark times’ that JP lived in; any form of dissent, all forms of free speech are meticulously quelled sometimes blatantly but mostly in subtle

ways. Recently in Kerala, a group of college students were arrested because they had the courage not to agree with the status quo. A secret IB report on civil society organizations was carefully ‘leaked’ from the PM’s Office lambasting NGOs and individuals who critiqued mega-projects; strangely enough, among the NGOs mentioned is the PUCL which was founded by JP. Muzzling voices of dissent seems to be the prime objective of the report. Prices have risen as never before and the burden of the common man is expected to increase manifold times in the not-too-distant-future. At the same time, the corporate sector seems to be on a roll, when even the mandatory environment clearances are officially allowed to be by-passed. About the media, the less said the better: the very media that was screaming hoarse on issues that plagued the country a few months ago has now hidden itself in a cloud of silence on matters which are much worse. The obvious onesidedness on some issues by some of the electronic media does not fool a perceptive citizen. Efforts are made in all quarters to tactfully sweep the sins and wrongs of the past, under the carpet. Should one rake them up, one will have to pay consequences. …and there is much more! While I join you in your vociferous shout against the Emergency promulgated by Ms. Indira Gandhi, I am surprised at the way you were patronizing the anti-Emergency movement in favor of RSS/ABVP/Jan Sangh and failed to look at the sacrifices made by other Leftist and Socialist organizations. Moreover, you went on to subvert facts and wrote that ‘the Left either supported the emergency or only put up a soft opposition against it’. I write this open letter with a belief that when you read this, you will retract your baseless statements and in turn accept the double standards of RSS/ABVP/ Jan Sangh. I hereby place my arguments and facts before you. Your article sends across a feeling that the trio of RSS/ABVP/Jan Sangh were the saviors of democracy and the rest of the organizations were throttling the same. That was cognitive dissonance at its best, Mr. Jaitley, for I can’t assume that you never knew the fact that Balasaheb Deora, the third Sarsanghchalak of the RSS, after having had spent some time in jail, wrote to Ms. Gandhi hailing her and her 20 point programme. He also wrote to her requesting her to remove the ban on RSS. I hereby quote, with documented proof from letters exchanged between Mr. Deoras and Ms. Gandhi. Balasaheb Deoras’ missives to Indira Gandhi during the Emergency stated: “I have heard the speech you delivered on August 15, 1975, from the Red Fort, Delhi on AIR. The speech was balanced and befitting to the occasion

and has prompted me to write this letter to you,” he wrote on August 22, 1975. He concluded: “I beseech you to rescind the ban imposed upon the RSS.” He wrote on July 15, 1975: “The Sangh has done nothing against the government or society even remotely. There is no place for such things in the

The Sangh is engaged only in social and cultural activities.” Deoras wrote to Indira Gandhi again on July 16, praising her foreign policy and renewing his plea on the ban. Both letters were ignored. At a time when the entire country was up against Mrs. Gandhi for imposing the Emergency because of the Allahabad High Court setting aside her election, Balasaheb Deoras in a letter from the Yerwada central jail dated 10.11.1975 said, “Let me congratulate you as five judges of the Supreme Court have declared the validity of your election”. This was at a time when the entire country was protesting against the manner in which Indira Gandhi manipulated the law and amended the Constitution to legitimize her election. In another letter from jail to Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Balasaheb Deoras writes, “…this is my prayer to you that you kindly try to remove the wrong notion of the Prime Minister about the Sangh, and as a result of which the RSS volunteers will be set free, the ban on the Sangh will be lifted and such condition will prevail as to enable the volunteers of the Sangh to participate in the planned programme of action relating to country’s progress and prosperity under the leadership of the Prime Minister.” This was an obvious refer-

ence to the notorious 20-point programme of Mrs. Gandhi during the Emergency. While the democratic masses of India were decrying this, the RSS was willing to accept Mrs. Gandhi’s leadership! Aren’t these double standards, honorable Finance Minister? Mr. Jaitley, should I believe you when you tell me that you, as an elected President of Delhi University Students Union back then, are oblivious of these facts when you were making the above statements? Or, did you actually know the facts and tried to subvert them to use them to your advantage? While politicians like Sharad Yadav of JDU and MA Baby of the CPI (M) graciously accept that this was a joint struggle of the Leftists, Socialists and the Jan Sangh alike, you were not even willing to give the credit due to people just because they had a different political lens, despite they spending the same amount of time in jail, some even more. Don’t you remember that your counterpart from JNU, DP Tripathi, a Socialist then and an NCP leader now, fought alongside with you as part of the anti-Emergency movement? Don’t you also remember that comrades from JNU were spearheading the protests in Delhi courting arrests and completely ruining their careers just like you? Could you regain your consciousness and remember that hundreds of them were arrested, amongst people like DP Tripathi, Sitaram Yechury and Prabir Purkayastha? Are you trying to belittle their sacrifices and protests just because you are in power? Only the politically naïve or illiterate would cast such aspersion against the Left and the CPI(M) in particular. Thousands of its workers all over the country were arrested, many of them spending the full period of emergency under the draconian Maintenance of Internal Se(Contd.. on p. 10)

Even the CPI, which took a pro-Emergency stand revised its stand soon enough in its Bhatinda conference calling for protests against the emergency, recognizing its mistake. Mr. Jaitley, it’s a pity that you chose to ignore this fact to take away all the credit. Mr. Jaitley, are we looking at an Emergency situation with the advent of Modi? You must have heard the famous slogan, ‘Indira is India and India is Indira’ during the time of Emergency. Was the slogan given by Modi, ‘Vote for BJP, vote for Modi’ not in similar tune which the previous statement meant? Why don’t you dare go beyond the regular rhetoric of slogan mongering and communally loaded and polarized speeches which the people are bored, and ask such tough questions? During the emergency, Ms. Gandhi had muzzled the Freedom of Expression of the Media and press. What is your Govt. doing now? Why is it arresting those who are criticizing Modi on social media? Why were students who are running a magazine in Kerala arrested for showing Modi in a list of negative figures along with Hitler? Ms. Gandhi had prevented the appointment of/removed independent minded judges in the Supreme Court during the Emergency and would have them replaced by Congress nincompoops. What is your Govt. doing now? I guess you know what I am talking about. Yes, you are right Mr. Jaitley, I am talking about Gopal Subramaniam, who was vilified for not tiptoeing with your politi-

cal line and JT Utpat, who was transferred after he opened a case against your Squadron Leader Amit Shah. Ms. Gandhi, with the advent of Emergency projected herself as the supreme leader and wrestled a lot of constitutional powers. She had projected herself as the only good thing that could happen to India and exactly after 39 years, is Mr. Modi not doing the same? Mr. Jaitley, don’t you know that history, or for that matter the path of the society, was never determined by a single person but a culmination of deeds and acts (good and bad) of a lot of people? Would things have changed in history if a single person had not acted the way they did? Ms. Gandhi cracked on criticism and sacked non-pliant constitutional authorities. She centralized all the authority in the PMO. What is your boss doing now by asking the Governors and members of NCW and NDMA appointed by Congress to resign? Isn’t your Govt. taking a similar path with many important portfolios being kept with Mr. Modi himself and the cabinet filled by open Modi bhakts who have chanted his name all throughout the election campaign? Why are critics and dissenters in your party like LK Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi silenced? Why are many important decisions like hiking railway fares and an ordinance on Polavaram dam taken bypassing the parliament? Ms. Gandhi would have silenced op-

The people are fooled and are made to believe that they are living in a ‘democratic and free India’ when the case is diametrically opposite. They will neither protest, as they did in 1975 because they are in an illusion that this is a ‘democratic and free India.’ They probably don’t know that they will be arrested for speaking their mind out on Social Media. With all these questions in mind, I could see your article as nothing but a hypocritical collection of words just to make your point driven, irrespective of the concern for truth and ideology.

reaking bread’ together as a family, clan or community is a great tradition kept alive all along the Konkan coast especially in homes where the older generation is part of the household! A feast, a wedding or even farewell to a loved one calls for a collective family meal prepared by loving hands. In Konkan, the vast green granary of paddy, wheat makes an occasional appearance in modern times mostly for health reasons, edging out the rice bread. Otherwise, ‘Bread’ that accompanies the rich poultry or fish curries comes in the form of dosas, sanna, pan- pole, appam, bakri, mutlin, idi-appam, Kottige, shamige or rice roti depending on the kind of preparation it has to escort to the table. Variation in the condiments of the finely-ground masala determines the character of a curry and calls for a certain kind of dipping experience, narrowing the choice among breads. This gave rise to an array of rice breads, some leavened with toddy, some with yeast, some with Urud dal, some with coconut juice and some with just a dose of love! However, what is intriguing is that the rice roti brought to the tables in the Malabar Coast by the Mopla community is similar to the rice bhakri eaten at every meal by the inhabitants of Vasai, Dongri-Uttan and numerous other East Indian gaothans in and around Mumbai Dongri-Uttan to the North of Mumbai is the stronghold of East Indians who happen to be the original inhabitants of the seven islands of Bombay. Tending the livestock and fisheries, they also owned huge tracts of land on which paddy, coconuts, mangoes and tamarind grew abundantly. Once known as Koli, Kunbhi, Bhandari, Agri etc. they were self-sufficient and lived off the fat of the land. Vindyal or vindalu, their classic dish was abused and mutilated on the cookery show by the Michelin Star chef, showing utter disregard for this great cuisine. Once I also remember watch-

ing a Westerner cooking an adapted version of ‘fugias’ on a TVshow. Whatever the nomenclature, they will all be fake copies of the original masterpiece. Mopla community on the other hand originated when the Arab dhows descended on the spice-rich Malabar coast for trade and subsequently some Indo-Arab unions took place. Even marriage of the two cuisine took place, to yield a delightful and rich cuisine – but amidst the celebratory unions the humble bhakri was not forgotten! It resides happily side by side with the parota and other delicacies prepared with meat and nuts. So we go into the background of bhakri. In one of his episodes, the Michelin Star chef was seen tasting and praising the rice roti in the home of Mopla Muslims in Malabar. Though the recipe was twisted and given an Italian colour later on the show, the similarity of these rotis made by two different communities living a thousand miles apart, in Kochi and Vasai, is so amazing! The basic recipe goes thus- Stir some rice flour into boiling salted water and cook it into a heap, knead and shape rotis with your palms and bake on the tava- accompaniment to any dish of vegetable or meat. Sumptuous and tasty- Rustic fare of the earthy people! Rice roti, rice bhakri takes the form of neer-dosa in the homes on Canara coast. The indomitable pan-pole or Neer-dosa, so popular in Mumbai Udupi

seafood restaurants, is a Jack-of-alltrades. It’s charm lies in the soft texture and its ability to lend itself totally to the taste of the curry it accompanies. Unlike the bhakri, it is created by panfrying the crepes using raw rice flour diluted with plenty of water. Kudos to man’s ingenuity that transforms the same rice batter into crispy, brittle ‘Rotti’ to be eaten as ‘Kori-rotti’ and also into soft, wet neer-dosa to be eaten with any curry you fancy! Sadly the neer dosa, fails to come up to the expectations of these famous chefs, never known to walk on the lesser travelled paths- It’s their loss! There are other versions of pancakes made with refined wheat flour, eggs, milk etc. Since variety is the spice of life, they come in handy to break the monotony of rice breads. But refined flour is not exactly preferred by people who count calories or avoid rich ingredients. The difficulty in getting that thin fried-to perfection neer dosa can tilt the scales in favour of the crepes! Maybe for this very reason neer dosa has steadily climbed to the top of the list of culinary wonders to become a classic by itself. It is so versatile that it can also be a dessert or a signature dish to mark the passage of time. Do not be fooled by its appearance, it may appear to be a listless, droopy, wet non-entity but as my friend Shaku, would say, “ Daane daane pe likha he khanewale ka naam!” So, let us wait and watch…till the master chefs discover the dosa with water!

Let go and let God

Is it because we are so different, That other cannot understand us? Or is it because we ourselves fail, To understand our own selves first! We carry within us loads of baggage, Of the garbage of hurts, guilt and lost love: That makes us uneasy and miserable, For trying too hard, to right failures of the past. We need to step aside from these situations, To examine our within through Introspection, Not to find faults or pull ourselves down; But to grow in wisdom, so that we may turn-around. It requires an attitude of detachment, To prevent us from getting too judgmental: To focus on healing our inner person, With compassion, courage and self-love. As each layer of despair we acknowledge, We unlock the flow of God’s divine assistance. That blesses us with grace and inner healing, To grow wiser, not older: unfolding life in childlike wonder. It is when we realize that life is imperfection, That success and failure are never apart. That life is about being spontaneous and curious, Of accepting our limitations, as stepping stones of love! For lord says, ‘ASK, BELIEVE and Receive’. But first it takes a commitment, to both us and others forgive: To then put into action, the Attitude of Gratitude:

The domicile of origin, a somewhat inexact imitation of the Roman origo, is that assigned to each individual by his place of nativity unless he be accidentally born outside of the place where his father dwells; practically it is the paternal domicile for legitimate and the maternal domicile for illegitimate children. Again, in reference to the spiritual life, domicile of nativity is the place where adults and abandoned children are baptized.â&#x20AC;&#x201D; The domicile of residence or acquired domicile is that of one's own choice, the place where one establishes a residence for an indefinite period. It is acquired by the fact of material residence joined to the intention of their remaining as long as one has no reason for settling elsewhere; this intention being manifested either by an express declaration or by circumstances. Once acquired, domicile subsists, despite more or less prolonged absences, until one leaves it with the intention of not returning.â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Finally, necessary or legal domicile is that imposed by law; for prisoners or exiles it is their prison or place of banishment; for a wife it is the domicile of the husband which she retains even after becoming a widow; for children under age it is that of the parents who have authority over them; for wards it is that of their guardians; lastly, for whoever exercises a perpetual charge, e.g. a bishop, canon, or parish priest, etc., it is the place where he discharges his functions. Quasi-domicile is of one kind only, namely of residence and choice and cannot be acquired in any other way. It is acquired and lost on the same conditions as domicile itself and is deduced mainly from such reasons as justify a sojourn of at least six months, e.g. the pursuit of studies, or even for an indefinite period, as in the case of domestics. This being so, quasi-resi-

Who Is A Parishioner? dents are regarded as subjects of the local authority just as are permanent residents, being therefore parishioners bound by local laws and possessing the same rights as residents, with this difference, that, if they so choose, they may go and use their rights in their own domicile. They can, therefore, apply to the local parish priest, as to their own parish priest, not only for those sacraments administered to everyone who presents himself, e.g. Holy Eucharist and penance, but also for the baptism of their children, for first Communion, paschal Communion, Viaticum, and extreme unction. Their nuptials may also be solemnized in his presence and, except when they have chosen to be buried elsewhere; their funerals should take place from the parish church of their quasi-domicile. Finally, the quasi-domicile permits of their legitimate citation before a judge competent for the locality. On the other hand those who have neither a domicile nor a quasi-domicile in a parish, who are only there as transients (peregrini), are not counted as parishioners; the parish priest is not their pastor and they should respect the pastoral rights of their own parish priest at least in so far as possible. The restrictions of former times, it is true, have been greatly lessened and at present no one would dream of obtaining parochial rights for annual confession, paschal Communion or the Viaticum. Generally speaking, transients (peregrini) are not subjects of the local ecclesiastical authority; they are not held to the observance of local laws except inasmuch as these affect public order, nor do they become subjects of the local judicial authority. The retired Bishop said Most always thought that the words parishioner and congregant meant the same thing and could be used interchangeably within the context of someone who attends a place of worship. Are there any differences in meaning between these two words or appropriate usage for each? Parishioner and congregant refer to members of a particular local faith community. The requirements for membership, of course, vary considerably, but for the most part, simply attending services at a church does not make one a parishioner or congregant of that church any more than visiting a country makes one a citizen of it. Parishioner is older by a good measure. A parish is an ecclesiastical territory, a section of an Episcopal see (e.g. a diocese or archdiocese). Traditionally, any inhabitant of that territory (domicile) would have been expected to attend services at the local parish church, and all would have been parishioners. The Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox churches remain organized in this manner, but the term "parish" is used even by some denominational bodies without Episcopal administration, so making the members parishioners. Congregant is broader, in that it refers to the regular members of any local congregation. That local congregation may be a parish, but it might also be a local church or meeting house of a tradition that does not use the term parish, such as the Baptists or Mormonsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; or for that matter, Muslims or Jews.

Paying Tribute To Martyrs For Christ

ere is the evidence that dis unity and division can be over come, as Christian missionaries of other denominations have sacrificed their lives as martyrs for the Faith. In all this the Church is true to the command of Jesus to be one. Saint John Paul II in his encyclical Ut unum sint, on Christian unity (para 1),said: “ These brothers and sisters of ours, united in the selfless offering of their lives for the Kingdom of God, are the most powerful proof that every factor of division can be transcended and overcome in the total gift of self for the sake of the Gospel.”

If I live in that territory (domicile) and attend that church, I am a parishioner of that church, and also a congregant if I live outside that territory, but still attend that church; I am one of its congregants, but not one of its parishioners. We all know the perils of insisting and maintaining ones status quo and of accepting non parishioners in all Parish activities which may also include membership to the PPC – the brain child of the Parish Priest - albeit the explanation of the Cannon Law and the difference between a parishioner and non parishioner by the retired Bishop. The parishioners were amused to note the Parish Priest insistence on his “my way or the highway” attitude but - NONE THE LESS - Thanks to this new initiative of the Parish Priest, not just the parishioners but the whole of the Bombay Archdiocese has been invited to participate in all activities in his Parish. It’s an invitation that’s hard not to accept for all the non parishioners least because the person extended it – the Parish Priest has a way of not interacting with his parishioners and enjoying it.

Do Not To Start Mass With 'Good Morning' - Cardinal

Manila: Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle asked priests to do away with their habit of greeting their parishioners “good morning” during Mass, saying the expression “the Lord be with you” is already sufficient. “With all due respect, my brother-priests, I do not see the need for saying ‘good morning’ and similar greetings when God’s real presence in the Holy Eucharist alone suffices,” he said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website. “Is not the expression ‘The Lord be with you’ more than enough?” added Tagle. His Eminence said this during his Corpus Christi Mass at the Santa Cruz Church (Our Lady of the Pillar Parish Church) in Manila, Sunday. Tagle said priests seem to give more emphasis on “good morning” than on the all-important “The Lord be with you.”
