Opposition, Church official in Goa slam "Hindu Nation" remark
Panaji: The Opposition Saturday collectively demanded the dismissal of two cabinet ministers in the BJP-led coalition government in Goa, while a Church official said both Co-operation Minister Deepak Dhavalikar and Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza, who referred to India as a "Hindu nation", have no place in the country. "We will be presenting a memorandum to the Goa governor demanding the dismissal of the two ministers over their comments. If that fails, we will also seek legal recourse to drop the two ministers, who have sworn to abide by the constitution," state Congress president Fernandes told a press conference at the party's state headquarters. Fernandes' comments came after the two Goan ministers made national headlines with their remarks on India as a Hindu nation. D'Souza on Friday had said, "India is a Hindu country. It is Hindustan. All Indians in Hindustan are Hindus, including I - I am a Christian Hindu." D'Souza is one of the seniormost minority members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa. Christians account for nearly 26 percent of the state's population. On Thursday Dhavalikar while speaking during a congratulatory motion in the state legislature had said India could well be on the path to becoming a Hindu nation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both comments had triggered an uproar at the national level as well as in the state's political and social circles, with the Congress legislature wing even staging a walkout in the assembly Friday against the remark. Reacting to the comments, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state vicepresident Trajano D'Mello accused D'Souza of committing "heresy" and demanded that the Goa Church seek an explanation from the deputy chief minister for calling himself a "Christian Hindu". "D'Souza has committed heresy by claiming he is a Christian-Hindu. The Church should demand an explanation from him and if he fails to explain this term, then he should be ex-communicated from the religion," Nationalist Congress Party leader Trajano D'Mello told a press conference at the party's state headquarters Saturday. D'Mello claimed that the deputy chief minister has been brainwashed by the BJP. "What he has said is nothing less than sacrilege and an insult to all (Contd.. on p. 4)

(Contd.. from p. 3) Christians," D'Mello said. Earlier, a Church official lashed out at the two ministers, saying those who refer to India as a "Hindu nation" had no place in the country. "... if a minister has made such statements, he has to be taken to task by the government. Because he is going against the constitution of the country," Fr. Maverick Fernandes said. "We have it very clearly mentioned in the preamble (of the Indian constitution) that we are a secular nation. Anybody dreaming of such desires should be taken to task because their place is not in this nation," he further said. Maverick Fernandes further said the remarks only go on to expose the "ignorance of the person" who made them and that the ministers were straying from the oath they had sworn to protect the constitution of the country.

Shiv Sena: Where Does One Draw The Line?
U
nhappy with the food, 11 Mem bers of Parliament (MPs) of the Shiv Shena party walked into the dining hall of Delhi’s Maharashtra Sadan, created chaos, and allegedly forced a Muslim supervisor to eat roti during Ramadan. This incident which shows Shiv Sena at its worst, has acquired an array of criticism. Shiv Sena, which is mostly active in Maharashtra, is popularly known across the country for its radical rightist stand with respect to social and political issues. Many a times, we have heard of the group taking tough stands on social issues and even engaging in moral policing across Maharashtra. They have been in the news for beating fellow Indians, damaging public property, and intimidating police officers. They have also gone as far as to beat up women. One cannot become judgemental just as yet, since more details about the incident are being awaited. However, two things need to be highlighted here: One is that this group of Shiv Sena men forced a Muslim man to break his fast

Even if one were to not consider the communal side of this story, to create a situation of disarray and behave like hooligans is something they must be held accountable for. Be it a government official or someone else, any act of arrogance in a public place should not be tolerated. Also, forcing someone to break his fast is not only disrespectful but is also a disgraceful act. To hurt the sentiments and religious beliefs of a person should be condemned by all. In a democratic country with the right to freedom of religion, every citizen should be guaranteed a life of safety, respect, and dignity. No matter which party they may belong to or position they may hold, MPs who carry out such insensitive acts should be subjected to disciplinary action from the state as well as the party. A member of parliament is a representative of the people and should set examples by his conduct. Lastly, politicians must be reminded that they are not above the law.
Catholic Church is "best" in protecting human rights in Nepal by Christopher Sharma
Thanks to Our Lady Of Perpetual Succor for the favours granted
during Ramadan, and the other is that they created chaos in a public place.
Kathmandu (AsiaNews) - The Catholic Church and Catholic organisations are the safest and most respectable groups in Nepal in the field of human rights, this according to activists and representatives of various religions who spoke to AsiaNews, responding to accusations - in other parts of the world of abuse by some priests. "In our country there are many cases of human rights violations, but none involves Catholics or their institutions," activist and National Human Rights Commission member Subodh Pyakurel told AsiaNews. "Indeed, ac-
cording to our data they are the most reliable for children and women." "We cannot speak for priests in other countries," said Biswanath Upadhya, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission and former president of the Supreme Court, "but those who work with us are a model for Nepali society." "We believe in the good seeds planted by Christians," said Nazrul Hussein, Muslim representative on the Interreligious Council of Nepal. "As minorities we work together and Catholics are the best in promoting the human rights of children and women."

Give Them Harsh Punishment
than he would normally charge in other hospitals. Surgeons are also known to demand “ under the table’ fees before agreeing to operate upon a patient. Sex-determination and abortion clinics are proliferating, where the birth of a male offspring is guaranteed at a price. The list is endless. So can we still look up to the medical profession as being humanitarian?
Men who rape women and children deserve the harshest punishment. They have no conscience and do not feel guilty after committing the crime. Strict laws like those prevailing in Arabian Gulf states should be introduced in India. Even juveniles should not be spared as they too are committing rapes.

Law Makers or Law Breakers? We condemn the despicable act of force feeding a Muslim Staffer of the Maharashtra Sadan Canteen by the Shiv Sena M.P's. Will the BJP government have the courage to act against such disgusting behaviour? It is terrible to contemplate how very few politicians are punished in India. In this case the law makers have become law breakers. What example are they setting? Criminal proceedings must be initiated against them. Earlier there was a hue and cry by the BJP that UPA dispensation was weak and indecisive. Is the BJP government coward not to act against such bullying of a common hardworking employee irrespective of which religion he belongs? If an ordinary citizen had to indulge in such behaviour he would have been arrested by now. Is there a different law for Members of Parliament? Our demand is very clear: "Enforce the rule of law" to all equally. Such MP's do not deserve to be our representatives. Shameful indeed is their behaviour and should be condemned with all the words at our command and they should be punished.
against doctors and their nexus with pharmaceutical companies, diagonistic centres, and pathological labs, it would be pertinent to question whether the medical profession can still be considered to be a noble one. The respect that doctors once commanded in earlier days is slowly dying out, as a large number have now turned mercenary and businesslike. with no qualms of conscience. Consultation charges vary from person to person as well as from hospital to hospital. In Mumbai for example, a consultant in a super -speciality hospital charges three times more

Development Index (GDI). India is ranked at 135 out of 187 countries among the ‘medium development’ nations like Egypt, South Africa, Mongolia, Phillipines and Indonesia. It is on the ‘ income measure’ that India fails dramatically. The annual income per person (measured in purchasing power parity terms) for India is $5,150, slightly more than our neighbours, but lowest among the BRICS countries, and less than half the global average of $13,723. The developed countries average is way ahead at $40,046. So what basically requires to be done is to increase the ‘wages’ of workers so that their standard of living goes up; otherwise another analogy may be made accountable: “For the ‘wages’ of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). —Dr Trevor Colaso, Bandra
'The Golden Fruit Kumquat' This refers to the write-up on issue of 30th June, 2014 of Vera Alvares on 'The Golden Fruit - Kumquat is quite interesting. But she has suspiciously guessed to be 'Darambe' grown in Coffee Estates of Western Ghats Chickmangalore and Coorg. In fact 'Darambe' fruit is from a full grown up tree, which has dark yellow colour which are almost round in shape. The leaves of the tree are long in shape which locals use to wrap lime paste used by betel-nut and leaves e3aters. In Tulu language it is called 'Dare-Puli'. The fruit has one or two seeds in the centre only. The outer cover of the fruit after deceeding are dried which is used for sour taste while cooking vegetables like 'Bindi-sol' or Solan. It is proved that if you eat this fruit in excess you may be prone to dysentry. I therefore have a strong feeling by looking at the picture of 'Kumquat' which is not 'Darambe' as it is shown seedless. Perhaps it may be 'Mavlinge' which grows on a thorny bushy plant of 2 to 3 ft. height. The leaves of this busy plant have just the
6
same aroma of leaves of lemon tree or any other leaves of citrus fruit plants. 'Mavlinge' is used for asking 'mavlingachi Doss' like Ginger-preserve which is quite relishing with a little bitter, sweet and sour taste - perhaps, I may also be wrong. —Francis Sequeira, Mangalore
Who Is A Hindu? An unnecessary hue and cry is being raised over the statement of Dy. Chief Minister Francis D’souza referring to India as Hindu nation and for calling himself a Christian Hindu. The question boils down to who is a Hindu? Although the term ‘Hindu’ in common parlance and usage is used to refer to an adherent of Hinduism, it has more geographical than religious connotations, as it was used by the Greeks, Persians, Arabs and Chinese in the early centuries to denote the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula, east of the river Indus (Indoos). Even though the adherents of Hinduism account for
Wedding Invitation, Christening, First Holy Communion, Mortuary Cards & Religious Goods
more than 82% of our population, it does not make India a Hindu nation, because we have a Constitution which is secular and we live in a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society. Just as Dy. CM Francis has called himself a Christian Hindu, there were several other Hindu reformers of the Indian Renaissance movement like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Keshab Chandra Sen and others who were also known as Hindu Christians, for whom Jesus Christ was the greatest teacher of religion and morals. Keshab Chandra Sen even talked about the Cosmic Christ hidden in the Vedas and Upanishads. He wanted the church In India to be genuinely Christian yet genuinely Hindu under the new dispensation. Today, the Inculturation movement in the church is also modelled on the lines of Vedanta, appropriating the signs and symbols of Hinduism in their rituals and liturgy. So why this fuss about one being a Christian Hindu? —A. F. Nazareth, Alto Porvorim

I
In Praise Of Priests
have a healthy respect for priests especially when I fall ill and fear I may require their final services. Besides ,we have too many in our immediate family – for our own good. Sometimes I think our family was more in need of salvation than other families, hence the number of ‘ soul savers ‘ in it ! It‘s very difficult being a priest in these times , when to all things clergic the vast majority of the world is allergic; when people respect no one and nothing ; and when there are so many more attractive and tempting, not to mention lucrative, calls one could more easily answer.Times have changed and the clergy with them because in this Jet Age , most people prefer to be high fliers. It takes all kinds to make a world and all kinds make the clergy .There are clerics who are pure dynamite, blasting their congregation from here to eternity. There are others who are dashing and handsome ,with a curl on the forehead ( a la Elvis ) ,curling your very heart with love – for God ! There are others like their patron saint John Marie Vianney not considered God‘s gift to Man by men,the ways of God being strange and those of men ,even stranger. Priests come –as we all do-in varied packages : good, average, indifferent. So when next you meet one who doesn‘t come up to expectations, you would do well to look within – you probably don‘t either. The Lord makes uncommon as well as ‘ common ‘ priests but more of the latter kind ,I think , because there are so many of us common folk in need of salvation. The Religious Life is a vocation quite unlike the Single or Married life. Today,it is also a profession, not only because a lot of priests are professionals having joined the priesthood after having served for many years in the corporate/secular world, but also because today‘s priest is more likely than not to be a trained professional who brings a professional touch to the ministry of saving souls. A priest is not
4 August 2014
a priest because he couldn‘t be anything else ; a priest is a priest AND everything else - all things to all men : teacher, preacher ,doctor, lawyer, media man, engineer, management consultant , marriage counsellor, clown ! A sense of humour is his saving grace. Some priests have it ,some members of the laity unfortunately, don‘t. A certain pastor preached a weighty but lively sermon which had the entire congregation in splits, except for one gentleman who didn‘t even smile. “ My good man “ said the priest to him, after the service ,” didn‘t you like my sermon – I noticed you didn‘t even smile .” “ Certainly not! “ replied the man ,seriously “ I belong to another parish .” One could say this particular man was a parochial fool ,whereas the preacher – in this case- was a fool for God ! Sometimes a priest may get frustrated because he feels he‘s chosen / lives a passive existence where he‘s responsible not so much for doing things as for getting things done.Raving in restlessness, his nature contravened , he perhaps feels he may have blundered in answering an imaginary call the mundane duties of which ,weary him,and he begins to yearn for the more exciting life of the secular world. In truth, he is very much a part of that world and all his talents are put to maximum use in his ministry. The role of a politician, soldier, a votary of glory, lover of renown, luster after power may beat under the curate‘s surplice but the true priest needs nothing to adorn him – neither ambition nor glory. At other times, a priest may be assailed by feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy to tackle the mission at hand. Who ,indeed, is worthy of God‘s call to take up any challenge in life ? We are made worthy and thereafter do the best we can within our limitations. After all ,it is the Rock of all Ages that the wise priest leans on and it will bear the weight of his human frailty ! A shepherd- pastor of his flock , is akin to the leader of a mountain climbing expedition. Life is the mountain being climbed by the congrega-

tion with the priest leading the way. Should he falter, lose direction or decide to give up half- way , consider the fate of the ones who follow. The priesthood , like the married state ,is undoubtedly difficult with its many challenges. Even so, when the going gets tough, married couples remember the solemn vows they made to each other before God , on their wedding day and resolve to keep their commitment . It should be no different for the clergy and it isn‘t , for the majority of them. Keeping one‘s vows, however, should not give one a martyred look nor make martyrs of one‘s congregation as happened with the minister of a certain parish who was a bore when he wasn‘t being a tyrant. He was consequently extremely unpopular .One Sunday morning he announced , what he considered would be sad news, from the pulpit : “ Brethren, the Lord Jesus is in need of my services elsewhere , and so I have been transferred to another parish .” Thereupon the congregation rose as one in the recessional hymn of thanksgiving , ‘ What A Friend We Have In Jesus ‘. Our priests are, in the main, unlike that one, friends of Jesus who have befriended us. The greatest and most difficult calling in life is, unarguably, that of the priesthood with its myriad demands and challenges , big and small. A priest lives for others , in accordance with his vocation, as few of us do. He lays the foundation on earth for our mansions in Heaven and is entrusted with the task of improving the quality of our lives, spiritual and temporal. He takes the vow of celibacy to enable him the better to serve one Master – and His people. Therefore, to be successful , a candidate “ can`t be a priest, until he firsts understands that he is a man” and would need to sublimate his instincts in the effective discharge of his vocation. So let us breathe a prayer for our priests on Clergy Day – Aug. 4 – and every other day, that following the example of their Master, the Good Shepherd, they may go through this world , ‘ changing water into wine ‘ !

National Consultation On Catholic Families
A
large number of Catholic fami lies in India are not even aware that Pope Francis has called a World Synod on the Family in Rome this October. This will be the first synod during Pope Francis’ papacy, and is indicative of his pastoral priorities. Earlier Popes took up theological issues like faith, the Eucharist etc. So this Synod should be refreshingly different. As a preparation, the Vatican had sent out a questionnaire (survey) of Catholic families to be conducted. Unfortunately, as reported by the Japanese bishops, the Survey was heavily Eurocentric, touching on “western” issues like live-in relationships and samesex marriages. In India the Survey did not get the attention it merited, and a “report” was dashed off to Rome. The issue came alive after a press report on which basis this writer contacted one of the papal advisors, Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai. Thereafter an international group of concerned Catholics, “Catholic Church Reform International”, contacted us to do our own research. The cat was out of the bag. Only 40 of the 120 Latin dioceses had responded to the Survey. In Mumbai there was not a single respondent to the published questionnaire! Those bishops, who did respond, hurriedly put together reports based on “in camera” discussions, in which the laity (the families) was largely sidelined. Some other bishops quite rightly observed that the methodology of the Survey was not user friendly. Some other bishops claimed that there was not enough time to translate the Questionnaire into local languages for dissemination. Be that as it may, one may safely conclude that whatever report(s) went from India did not reflect the genuine concerns of Indian Catholic families, as they were almost entirely ignored in the entire process. An added complication is the Vatican’s division of families according to Rites. So the Latin, Syro-Malabar and SyroMalankara Rites would have sent separate reports. Several attempts by one

BY CHHOTEBHAI
of our members, Dr James Kottoor, to obtain information from the SyroMalabar Rite (SMR) bishops in Kerala, were stonewalled. This World Family Synod is a papal initiative. Such a golden opportunity cannot be squandered. Hence a group of prominent lay leaders from across the country got together to conduct the Survey based on the Vatican Questionnaire, and to organise local level discussions; culminating in a National Consultation on Catholic Families to be held in Pune on 23rd/24th August. Among the organizers are – Virginia Saldanha (Mumbai), Dr James Kottoor (Ernakalum), Dr John Dayal (New Delhi), Raynah Braganza Passanha (Pune), Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh (Shillong), Diago Almeida and Alan Doulton of Pune, with this writer as the Co-ordinator. Bp Lawrence Pius of Dharampuri, the CCBI (LR) Chairperson of the Family Commission, has expressed full support for our efforts and will forward our findings to Rome. Bp Thomas Dabre of Pune has also extended his full cooperation and will celebrate the inaugural Mass. Based on initial responses, we have identified some major areas of concern that have been categorized under: - 1. Pastoral 2. Sociological 3. Psychological and 4. Physiological heads:
1. PASTORAL: Though a major concern of the Pope, it is reflected in the reports sent by German and Japanese bishops’ conferences. The same goes for the reports from some Indian dioceses that we have obtained. It is a travesty that what
should have been a top priority is actually very low down on the church’s agenda. Catechesis and faith formation stop after Confirmation classes.. Most people attend Marriage Preparation Courses just to obtain the necessary “certificate”. Marriage enrichment, guidance and counseling are negligible. There are no respite centres for victims of marital discord or domestic violence. A problem peculiar to SMR Catholics, especially those resident outside Kerala, is the practice of Church Dowry, where they are expected to donate a large sum to the local church, including arrears of subscription, even if they have been resident outside Kerala for generations. The SMR bishops are refusing to recognize the “free state” (status liber) certificates issued by Latin Rite parishes, insisting that they will only take cognizance of their own certificates, which obviously come at a price. SMR Catholics in Mumbai and Delhi, in particular, are incensed by such coercive tactics.
2. SOCIOLOGICAL: Bucking the trend, the girls in our community are better qualified, better employed, and often emotionally more stable, than the boys. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable marriage partners within the community. This has resulted in a high rate of inter-faith marriages. In Mumbai this is pegged at 25%. The Japanese bishops report that it is 75%. This is a serious issue that needs redress. Other sociological/ demographic issues are those of urban migration and resultant anonymity, domestic violence, (Contd.. on p. 10)
9
Dying With Dignity
(Contd.. from p. 9) dowry, single parenthood, “shotgun” arranged marriages, care for aged and infirm parents, and the extravaganza associated with the “big fat Indian wedding”.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL: There is the growing danger of becoming impersonal by replacing virtual relationships on Facebook etc for real face-to-face relationships, resulting in non-communication, which is the greatest threat to marriage and family life. There is also the lack of conjugal privacy, so necessary for a matrimonial bond to develop.
4. PHYSIOLOGICAL: There are issues connected with planning the size of one’s family, infertility, in-vitro fertilization, surrogacy etc; and the contentious issue of a woman who incurs an abortion being automatically ex-communicated. The National Consultation on Catholic Families hopes to address these issues and seek solutions. Participants from all over the country are expected. Those interested in participating may contact me by email at: noronha.kp@gmail.com, or by phone at 09415130822. he Apex court has called for a debate on euthanasia and has sought the views of all states legislatures within eight weeks . Christianity does not permit euthanasia in any form. Other religions too are not in favour of it. Fasting to death as in Jainism is a form of penance highly recommended in their religion and not to be confused with euthanasia . But even from a practical stand-point, euthanasia if legalised will prove to be a disaster in our country. The concept of 'dying with dignity' is gaining momentum in the west where the majority of the people live with dignity. In our country one-third of the people live below the poverty line--- without dignity. 'Active euthanasia' or mercy killing is legal in a few countries like Belgium and Netherlands which are very small in population, making it is easy to monitor individual cases. (Mumbai is larger than Belgium and Netherlands in population). So far as active euthanasia is concerned it is tantmount to murder as it involves injecting a substance to snuff out life .In our 1.2 billion strong nation, the majority being poor, euthanasia will be a complete disaster --no less than genocide . Whatever the safeguards people will find ways of bumping off the old , disabled and the unwanted. 'Passive euthanasia' (which implies pulling off the life-support of irrevers-

ibly vegetative patients ) became legal in 2011in the wake of the Aruna Shanbag case. It is pertinent to observe that before life-support was in place, people would live and die, naturally. Nowadays doctors and hospitals put patients on life support randomly to prolong life and revenue. The masses here have no use for life support. If they survive, it is not on life-support but on love-support. And that is the way it should be .( My 94-year old mother is in an irreversibly vegetative state for many years. She has survived only on the love-support of her daughter and their family). Moreover, do we have sufficient number of ventilators to take care of the masses, or is 'dying with dignity' only for the rich? Nobody has the right to take life. The only exception being terminally ill patients suffering excruciating pain. In such cases, administration of painkillers in increasingly larger doses, commensurate with the increase in pain, is humane and a must, even if this treatment ultimately results in eternal sleep. The following anecdote illustrates the point: A visitor was being taken around an hospice in UK. The kind sister beckoned to a room in which severe painafflicted cancer patients were sleeping soundly. She explained: "Tomorrow morning they will all get up very refreshed and ready to face another day. All of them but one. He will sleep on peacefully...forever".

into the crevices of the ginger. The skin will come off with a gentle scrape. Avoiding over-spilling milk when boiling: Before pouring milk into a pot for boiling rub butter along the top edge and inside lip of the pot. When the milk foams up, it will stop over spilling when it hits the butter. Removing the garlic skins: Wash the garlic buds before peeling the skin. The skin of the garlic will come off easily and quickly.
To avoid sticky rice: Wash the rice a few times until the water runs clear. Remove all the water until no water remains. Let it sit for 20 minutes. This will remove all the starch and help the rice to remain separate. Also adding a few drops of lemon juice to the rice while cooking, you will find that the grains of rice will tend to remain separate. For crispier puris: Add a teaspoon of semolina / rava (suji) and 1 teaspoon of rice flour to the wheat flour while kneading. Quick tomato paste cubes: Spoon tomato paste into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight. Transfer into plastic bags and freeze. Frozen cubes can be dropped right into curries. Remedy for salty curry: Wash a potato. Cut into two. Place the two halves of the raw potato in the curry and it will absorb the extra salt. How to cut an onion without crying? One can adopt any of these methods to cut onion without crying - peel and cut onions under running water. Chop onions near a gas flame. Or refrigerating onions before chopping. Use kitchen scissors: One must use kitchen scissors to chop coriander leaves, mint leaves and chillies to avoid any kind of a mess. One can stock this for the purpose of garnishing. Tips for making dosa: To ensure that the griddle (tawa) is hot enough before spreading dosa, sprinkle a little water over it. If it sizzles immediately, then the griddle is hot enough. Wipe with a clean rag or half a raw onion and proceed. Tip for making soft chappati dough: While making paneer from milk, don`t throw away the paneer water. This nutritious water can be used for making soft dough for chapatis or can be used to cook dals. Peeling a whole garlic: To peel garlic, place your knife flat on the garlic clove and whack with your other hand. The covering will burst open and the clove can be easily removed. Peeling or scraping ginger: Peeling or scraping ginger with the back of spoon is an easy way to peel ginger. Scrape the ginger with the inside of a spoon, getting the edge of the spoon
All general tips: To keep sweet corn yellow in colour, add one teaspoon of lemon juice to the cooking water just about a minute before removing from heat. Never salt the water you cook corn in. It will only toughen the corn. The best way to thaw fish is in milk. The milk draws out the frozen taste and gives the fish a fresh flavour. Keep lemons in hot water for twenty

Christians And The Indian Freedom Movement
W
e, Christians have been ac cused of not participating in the freedom struggle for India’s independence by some organizations ever since independence in 1947. It is alleged that Christians supported the British because they belong to same faith. The NCERT text books for class IX students on Social sciences titled “Contemporary India (2002) labels Muslims & Christians as non- patriots. The aim is to create a new generations of Indians, indoctrinated to a certain ideology so as to create an atmosphere of hatred & insecurity between different communities which have been peacefully co-existed for centuries. The hatred, riots and attacks on minorities /institutions we witness today are born of this ideology. The accusations that Christians did not participate in the freedom movement are very serious and we have to understand it in a right perspective. One thing was certain that several of the Christians who participated in the struggle were having Indian/local names which were difficult to distinguish between Christian & other faiths. The well known Church historian, George Thomas writes that Mr. Barhmabandhab Upadhyaya, a HinduCatholic sadhu & theologian, editor of “Sandhya played a leading role in the Swadeshi movement. Thevarthundiyil Titus, T M Vargese, A J John, Joachim Alva, Violet Alva, Anne Mascarenhas and Akkamma Cherian were the famous Christian names. There was Mr. Madhu Sudan Das a well known Christian leader from Orissa and Kali Charan Bannerjee from Bengal. In the Congess session of 1889 out of ten women del-

egates, three were Christians: Pandita Ramabhai, Mrs. Triumbuck and Mrs Nikambe. George Thomas further notes that, the Christian community has played a very significant role in the Independent movement. Many others who participated in the Freedom struggle by joining one or other movement. Compared to the population of Hindus and Muslims, the miniscule Christian community was far ahead in playing a constructive role in the struggle for independence. Kaka Joseph Baptista from Mumbai founded the All India Trade union Congress (1920) to bring the working classes together to build a mass movement in order to fight the British. As a practicing barrister at the Bombay high Court he fought the sedition cases of Lokmanya Tilak and Veer Savarkar successfully. They have also provided back up support when some leaders were arrested viz. Jesudasan Cornelius having degrees from Ohio,

Boston, Harvard and Colombia universities was then teaching philosophy at Lucknow university was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and took up editorship of “Young India when Gandhiji was imprisoned. He too was sent to prison along with Gandhiji 2-3 times during the Quit India movement and a prominent figure in the Congress and later selected by Govt. of India to lead a delegation to London. K T Paul was selected to participate in the Round Table conference in England. Paul Ramaswamy who took part in salt satyagraha was imprisoned for 6 months in Thiruchi, Mr Venkal Chakkarai has participated in the Civil disobedience movement. Nirad Biswas who later become Bishop of Assam joined the National movement of satyagraha. Mr M.V. Kamath a regular columnist to the RSS weekly, Organiser named people like Cyprian Alvares, Joachim Alva, Marcel D’Souza as prominent Christian freedom fighters from the South. George Joseph another prominent figure was one of three members of the Home rule deputation sent to England to present the Indian case. He was the first batch of Indian barristers who sacrificed their comforts to engage themselves in the National movement was the editor of “South Indian mail. He was arrested in 1921 during the non co-operation movement and arrested for sedition in 1922. Jawaharlal Nehru in his autobiography said about George Joseph that “he did not pop up his tail between the hind legs but if he sowed the wind he was equally ready to reap the whirlwind. Among the leading Christian women leaders who took part in the freedom struggle were Mrs. George Joseph, Mrs Gracy Aaron, Mrs. Margaret Pavamani, Miss Mary Thomas, Miss Matilda Kalten and Mrs Violet Alva. Printing technology was introduced into Kerala by Christian missionaries in the 16 th century. Rajya samacharam, Paschima taraka, Satyananda kahalam, Nazrani Deepika, Malayala Manorama (1890), Paschimodayam were also edited and published by either Christians or by missionaries inspired people to

(Contd.. from p. 16) join the struggle through their writings and speeches.. Christians never fought for a separate state whereas some Hindu leaders demanded Hindu Rashtra and Muslims a Muslim state viz. Pakistan. Organizations like The Hindu Mahasabha & RSS did not engage themselves in the Congress-led freedom movement because of their ideological differences. Gandhiji had to pay the heavy price with his life in the hands of Nathuram Godse. The true story for Indian struggle for Independence is a complex one with people participating as one “community of Indians” by shedding their religious identities & differences for the well being of the whole society. Today, half a century later, the very same society has been divided into cast & religious lines and shows the signs of further divide by every passing day which the present day politicians are busy with by pumping hatred against certain communities with their communally charged speeches. People are killed in the name of ideology, institutions are attacked, icons are humiliated, those who criticize have been labeled as traitors and asked to go to Pakistan. In fact the Father of Indian constitution Dr Ambedkar foresaw & believed in plurality of Indian society where every one can co-exist peacefully, but today caste & religion politics has taken an upper hand. If we are really concerned about the happenings around, then we must join hands with likeminded people for a harmonious & safe India.. (compiled from various sources)

If You Are Advised For A ‘Bypass Surgery’ Here is an alternative option:
'Chelation Therapy' [We are giving an information that is received in our mail box -Ed.]
Currently, only a few doctors in India specialise in this field
Recently, one person was admitted to a nursing home at Chinchwad, Pune due to severe chest pain. He had an earlier attack in 2013 and was under treatment. The doctors now suggested Angiography.
One of them is DR. DINKAR KADAM (Pune)
Upon undergoing Angiography at multi speciality Hospital Doctors diagnosed multiple blockages for which Angioplasty was ruled out and instead, suggested 'Bypass Surgery'. That evening, he was brought home as doctor suggested his heart being very weak, bypass could be performed only after 10 - 15 days. Meanwhile, after discussing the matter with relatives and close friends, fresh information came from a family friend. A new treatment known as-"Chelation Therapy" has been introduced into the Indian medical theatre. With this therapy, a patient who has to undergo by-pass need not do so. Instead, the patient is given about 25 bottles of blood in which certain medicament are injected. The blood cleans the system and removes all blockages from the heart and the arteries. The number of bottles given may increase depending upon the age-factor and health of the patient. Cost per bottle may be around Rs.1,500/- Treatment takes about a month.
He has a list of patients who had to undergo by-pass from Ruby, Birla and other major hospitals; but, instead after undergoing the new treatment, they are absolutely fine and are leading a normal life. Make Your Marriage More Important Than Money W
hen couples struggle financially, we also see an increase in domestic arguments, breakups, and chaos. It’s difficult to show love toward your partner if you are worried about paying your cell phone bill, car payment and house note. However, research in this area is finding that materialistic people have unhappier marriages than couples who don’t care much about possessions.
all measures than marriages where neither spouse was materialistic. It had nothing to do with gender of the spouse; the non-materialistic couples were 10% — 15% better off in the categories studied (marital satisfaction, marriage stability, and lower levels of conflict). The study couldn’t test how materialism erodes a marriage, but Dr. Carroll and his team have a couple of theories: Materialism causes spouses to make bad financial decisions such as spending beyond their means, which puts them in debt and stresses the marriage.

Putting Your Marriage Over Money Issues
This holds true across all levels of income, according to Jason Carroll, who is a Professor of Family Life at Brigham Young University. Dr. Carroll goes on to say that if you are materialistic, you will have a happier marriage if you find someone who isn’t. Two like-minded materialistic people suffered the least satisfying of marriages.
N
o matter how hard you work, if you communicate with your spouse each day, letting them know something as simple as, “I am thinking about you,” you will be nurturing your relationship. Balance is everything. At times that is difficult and unattainable. When you know in advance that work will be consuming a lot of your time, tell your partner in advance so they can mentally prepare. Take them to dinner or spend extra time with them prior to the week or month that you need to focus on work. Remind them by saying something such as, “I am glad we have this time together, because next week (or next month) is going to be very demanding at work.” This tells your partner they are more important
The more you value money, the more troubles you suffer at home, because work usually comes first, and after work is done, people have left you and moved on. Your intimate relationships many times no longer exist. The research was done through the RELATE Institute, which is a respected national research non-profit organization. In this case, they studied 1,734 married couples and collected online questionnaires from them. Across the

to you than money. Have a family day. One day a week is sacred to families. Shut all communication off on that day. Program that day into your Blackberry, iPhone or whatever device you have so you won’t schedule business. Husbands, wives, and children all like nice things, but they love you. Their love is a gift, not something you will get paid for. No amount of money or nice things you can ever acquire will replace this love. As a family, it’s nice to have a charity to which you give every year. Let the kids be part of planning which charity means the most to them. Teaching your children early to value life rather than material is very important.

Inspiration!
Control Your Habit Of Worrying The line between healthy worrying and being obsessed by the negative worry is so thin that sometimes we fail to mark the difference. Train your brain to differentiate between the two. Worrying is hard to overcome because in a strange way, it actually makes a lot of sense to your mind. First, you imagine risks...and sometimes you are right. The first step to worrying less is to list what we worry about and if we make Recipe:
ONION PAKARAS
Ingredients: 5 large onions, finely sliced 1 teaspoon red chilli powder 1 teaspoon sugar Salt to taste Juice of 1 lemon A few sprigs of coriander leaves, finely chopped 1 cup gram flour (besan) 3 cups vegetable oil Method: 1. In a mixing bowl, combine sliced onions with chilli powder, sugar, salt, lemon juice and coriander leaves and mix well. Keep aside for 10 to 15 minutes to allow onions to sweat. 2. Mix gram flour (besan) into the onions. 3. Heat oil in a kadhai over medium flame. 4. Divide onion mixture into limesized pieces and carefully drop in the hot oil. Deep fry till they are golden and crisp. Remove and drain on absorbent paper. 5. Serve hot with mint chutney. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili
4 August 2014
this list every morning we can begin to delete things we are unable to control. Understand your concerns: “Worrying is a form of self-torture and has the power to make us suffer.” And it is a fact that worrying unnecessarily will tire us physically and emotionally. Chronic worrying needs to be restrained by constant attitude changes. Only by training one’s thoughts in a positive direction can anybody stop worrying incessantly. Here are some suggestions to help you worry less: • Identify and list your worries on a daily basis. Keep a ‘My Worry Diary’. • Try to find the reason why any one issue worries you. • See if you can do anything to stop that worry by doing something. • Don’t feel guilty about worrying. It is a natural phenomenon to worry if it is under control and does not begin to dictate your life. • Allow yourself a limited timeslot to worry rather than worry about everything all the time. • Point out to yourself the experience of your life that makes you worry about any particular aspect. • Learn to differentiate between useless worrying and creative worry that can be beneficial. • If you are unable to cope with your worrying, consult a qualified practitioner who will guide you to worry less and enjoy life more. • Only a professional can help you identify if your worrying nature comes from a deeper sense of insecurity and a feeling that anything going wrong around you reflects on you.
BANK ACCOUNT
I
magine there is a bank, which cred its your account each morning with Rs 86,400, carries over no balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every pence, of course! Well, everyone has such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the records of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." Therefore, there is never not enough time or too much time. Time management is decided by us alone and nobody else. It is never the case of us not having enough time to do things, but the case of whether we want to do it. "A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble."
Dial 1064, lodge graft plaint The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) has launched a toll free number that can be used to lodge corruption complaints in the state. “We have started a new number — 1064 — that can be used to report corruption cases from across the state,” said Pravin Dixit, director general of police, ACB. The bureau has reported a spurt of cases this year across the state. —Agnelo Rodrigues, Wadala E.

t now appears that Uttar Pradesh has become the of ficial homeland to communal violence in India. Saharanpur, on Saturday erupted with a brutal riot and has already led to the death of three people. The violence has further left several injured with more than 50 shops burnt down. A curfew has been imposed in the district and an order for “shoot at sight” has also been issued. The violence broke out over a huge piece of land that is adjacent to a Gurudwara (Sikh temple) which is being taken
Saharanpur Riot:
Yet Another Religious Violence care of by the Sikh Community for several years now. The land has been under dispute for the past few years when the Muslim community started claiming its ownership. According to Daljeet Singh Kochar, an advocate in the Saharanpur Civil Court, a petition was filed in the court 10 years ago, stating that the Gurudwara must not use the land, as a mosque had been built in that area. However, the land was given to the Gurudwara users by the District Court on May 2013, according to a report by The Hindu. The Sikh community started construction on the land without the permission of Saharanpur Development Authority (SDA). Following which, an enraged mob constituting nearly 700 people started throwing stones at the Gurudwara. Later the construction was stopped by SDA and police arrested the ones involved in violence.

Ratanpriya Sharma The violence supposedly was preplanned, according to the Sikh community. They also claimed that a large number of Muslims were called from Muzaffarnagar and Moradabad to participate in the violence. More than a dozen people have been arrested for promoting violence in the region. What makes the situation overwhelmingly horrific is that the violence is being waged in the name of God. However, religion is not the only cause of the riot, though it may seem so at the surface. While reviewing the entire situation on a deeper level and questioning the very purpose of the massacre, one may realize that a number of factors have interplayed simultaneously. As a result, the violence has broken out as a communal one. The Saharanpur violence is a clear
case of the blurring of wits and wisdom and rivalry of communities; and the worsening of the violence is a result of the respective community’s pride. At the end, the violence, losing its core purpose as when it began, could spiral into a matter of pride with both sides unwilling to surrender. Not even a year has gone by to one of the worst violence in Uttar Pradesh which out broke in Muzaffarnagar that killed 62 people, injured 93 and left more than 50,000 people displaced. This was then followed by curfew and dislocation of the army in the district. The growing number of riots, and crimes like rape, indicate towards the failure of Akhilesh Yadav’s government to maintain a harmonious environment in the state. Has the government not learnt anything from the past? It is high time that Mr Akhilesh Yadav woke up from his political slumber!
